I'm pretty sure this counts as something that's part of the Touhou fandom. A new card game is on the move, titled Garden of Souls. They have been ironing out how the game will work, and have prepared a Kickstarter to get things rolling.
In honour of that, Touhou is the set they'll be wanting to fling round to people. The project went up earlier today, which can be found with the following link : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/18592227/touhou-project-ft-gs-system (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/18592227/touhou-project-ft-gs-system)
The Touhou Project cards will be a Kickstarter only; probably to keep in line with the rules and such. Having followed their updates on Facebook, they have been doing their best to keep within the rules, and done a great deal of research. If successful, they'll be able to work on future projects with the system; which is always nice. And hey, we get some nice looking Touhou Cards to play with~
Thoughts and opinions on this?
-
I want the playmat, but goddamn i dont have a card nor the knowledge to paypal.
-
Dang, it hasn't even been a day and yet almost 1/3 of the goal is funded, definitely interested in this.
-
Looks very interesting as well... I'll look into this more.
-
The fastest that I could get my credit card ready is tomorrow and I am bloody scared that the 41 places left on the $50 tier will be gone by the time I get to it.
-
unfortunately there were only 5 left when I bought just now, and it was at 8 while I walked 5 feet to grab my credit card.. ;.;
Thanks for the heads-up Tamashii! I love card games but can't afford Magic atm... now it's just a matter of finding people to play this when it eventually comes around.
EDIT: and is it just me or does the demo video they have up sound like its narrated by a nature or train documentary enthusiast or what?
-
I was about to make a thread of this card game.
but you are too quick XD
very interesting indeed
just paid 60 bucks as a backer
rly looking forward to this
-
I suppose I could back this. It's only 66 US dollars and I've much more on other things.
Here's hoping it gets funded (and to the stretch goal)!
-
It will be really difficult to find any body who plays this game for a long while, or unless someone sets up a sim.
-
Very glad I posted this here now; awesome to see a good number of you interested in this~ XD
And as it stands, it's almost funded! 13k out of 15k done and dusted; with an update posted up as well, for those who haven't seen it yet. At this rate, it'll be funded before today is up; and that would sweet!
With me being in the UK, it would be pretty hard to play with anyone; though hey, I'll have something to showcase around the UK con scene with TCF's Touhou Panels. Bouncing on what Bio said, Tabletop Simulator exists for this very reason; inserting any card/board game into the software to play with other people. So hey, there's that; but not everyone wants that. But at least there's that option; which is better than nothing~
So yeah, can't wait to see more news. And Labuto need not worry about the $50 perk now that another one (without the name tag) has opened up. ^^
EDIT : Also, Yuuka confirmed to be in the game. I'm sold~ <3
-
How does this game fare compared to Rumbling Spell Orchestra?
-
Seems like the game-play video gonna be up today. We'll see by then, I guess. : x
-
Well, I guess this is the first kickstarter I'll be putting money behind, if only for collection purposes. [Odds of having someone to play with is low].
Also Kanjou there's gonna be at least one other guy in the UK with this thingymawhatzit. Maybe if we go to the same con at some point I can help you show it off.
With estimated deliver of December 2014, I guess I gotta put my home address. I'm not even sure how much 25 Canadian Dollars is in the old Sterling.
EDIT: ?13.49 at the current exchange rate. That's pretty cool.
Edit2: Oh wait I gotta change it to $30 for shipping I think. Whatever :P
-
AND BOO YEAH, FUNDED IN THE 2ND DAY! XD
And rapidly approaching 16k too.
They'll be releasing info on Stretch Goals tonight, for sure now. I mean, would make sense to with the funding goal reached. They'll likely upload that gameplay video too; so I'll certainly be keeping an eye on things.
But yeah, this is great news! Goes to show our fanbase never dies~ ;)
-
Aww, theres no Kaguya. But hey, Yuuka is there, so thats a plus for me.
-
The 2nd update is up; and gameplay has been discussed. At first, I thought it was going to be a bit complicated; but I think I'll be able to pick it up pretty quickly.
Also, they announced which characters will be appearing. And for the sake of those wanting to know how many from each game are in there, I'll list them in that order...
Main Characters - Reimu, Marisa.
EoSD - Cirno, Hong Meiling, Patchouli, Sakuya, Remilia, Flandre.
PCB - Alice, Youmu, Yuyuko, Yukari.
IaMP - Suika.
IN - Reisen, Mokou.
PoFV - Aya, YUUKA, Komachi.
MoF - Hina, Nitori, Sanae, Suwako.
SWR - Iku, Tenshi.
SA - Satori, Utsuho, Koishi.
UFO - Kogasa, Byakuren.
WaHH - Kasen.
I'm sure I saw Eirin at some point during the build up on Facebook; so I'm kind of confused there. Whether or not they'll include more of them at a later date is unknown; but it does seem a bit odd that certain characters were picked over others. No Kaguya to fight Mokou. No Miko to eye up Byakuren, or Kanako for that matter. No Ran to assist Yukari. And no love for stage 1 bosses; though I'm not surprised Cirno and Kogasa were included. Shout out to Kasen for being the only manga character in there. In terms of the stages (ignoring Reimu & Marisa's Stage 4 appearances, and Kasen) :
Stage 1 : 0.
Stage 2 : 3.
Stage 3 : 3.
Stage 4 : 3.
Stage 5 : 6. (Counting Komachi & Iku as penultimate bosses.)
Stage 6 : 7. (Counting Suika & Tenshi as final bosses; and Yuuka's LLS Final Boss.)
EX Stage : 4.
Phantasm : 1.
Also, almost hit 20k. Stretch Goals here we come~ XD
-
And 20k has been reached!
Are projects usually funded this quickly? I know a handful of games that got successfully Kickstarted, but I'm not familiar enough with the system or the site to really get a feel for how this scales up in the grand-scheme of things.
-
It really does vary. I've seen projects funded on the last day; where others have not just got funded quickly, but blown expectations out the water. (I vividly remember the Homestuck Game being one of those; Mega No.9 being another.)
For the GS System, it probably was helped by Touhou being a part of it. I'm not saying our fanbase is the sole reason behind this sudden success, but it likely contributed for sure. That's not taking anything away from those who aren't fans of Touhou; they know if this gets funded, more original stuff will be boosted throughout their time working on the System. And you never know, more specific one-off sets based on other titles more follow if demand grows. There are so many ways the group can take this~ ^^
-
Still, it's pretty impressive from an outsider's standpoint. I'm willing to bet that the project will get its outstretch goal before the week is done.
-
Someone has pointed (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/464054016138170368) the Kickstarter page to ZUN. He gave a reply that amounts to "Ooh. So what is that?"
As I recall, the devs of this game have been trying to contact ZUN since last year. Unfortunately, it seems their past communications have somehow failed to reach him.
They say they will cancel the project if they couldn't receive an approval before the end date. Perhaps we'll know the outcome of this in a few days... as long as there are people to actually facilitate effective translation.
-
Funnily enough, I was about to post the twitter thing here; seeing as how good some of you are with translations and feeds from ZUN. ^^
Was amusing seeing them scrambling on the comments section when ZUN tweeted it. They know how important it is hearing anything from him; and will likely be treating this pretty seriously.
They'll likely mention what's going on during their update later tonight. Hope it all goes well.
-
WaHH - Kasen.
Dammit, this must be a conspiracy to get me to buy this thing that I'll never play with anyone and be vaguely embarrassed to have in my home.
But do they really need explicit ZUN approval? The whole thing seems to fall squarely into the "doujin CG" category which was already allowed in ZUN's open license agreement. The fact that they won't be selling it through commercial distributors as mentioned in their FAQ section makes it pretty obvious to me that they were aiming for that.
Edit: Oh wait, they explicitly said so in their update.
-
I'd imagine that the issue in terms of the license agreement - if an objection is raised, and it may not be - would be in that it's taking money from outside the usual distribution channels, from an audience that the official Touhou games aren't yet available to. Kickstarter is (unless I've missed one) something that hasn't been utilised for Touhou fanworks, and ZUN might be wary of allowing a precedent for Touhou derivatives on a site where the language barrier will make it difficult for him to check up on what they're doing. Even if the developers have tried to follow the spirit of the guidelines as closely as they can, the next people to run a Touhou Kickstarter might not. Still, we'll see!
-
It's gonna depend a lot on how the Japanese view crowd funding. The point of doujin is that you're taking money out of your own pocket to make a ton of stuff with the goal of breaking even. Here the group are asking other people to pay them CAD$15,000 to make something (and I'm gonna be honest, I was pretty worried this was a scam at first because that's an absurd amount of money and the kickstarter didn't really list where it'd be going (when I checked)). That's a pretty big distinction right there. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the cost is justified, and I'm really glad the group want to respect ZUN's wishes no matter what happens, but launching a five-digit kickstarter before getting his permission was probably not the best idea.
(It does look cool though so I hope the talks go well!)
-
Is ZUN even aware of what kickstarter is? Outside a few big projects like Little Witch Academia 2, Mighty No. 9, and perhaps Project Phoenix, I'm willing to bet there's not a ton of knowledge about its existence in Japan. It would be interesting to see a county-by-country breakdown of donations for those particular projects to see where the money is primarily coming from.
-
He definitely knows what it is - he retweeted the Siter Skain kickstarter when it was running, there would have been a lot of talk about Mighty Number 9 at TGS and I have to assume that Nigoro's kickstarter experience came up in the Bitsummit roundtable. It's something that pretty much any independent game developer following current trends would be interested in, if only to see what other developers are doing with it.
-
Their 3rd update is finally up; and they are acknowledging a pretty hefty series of questions. It's worth noting that the group consists of 2 developers and an artist.
First of all, they'll be changing the word 'demon' to 'youkai' for all that it applies to. Not sure why they did demon in the first place; but thankfully, the change shouldn't be too hard to arrange.
They also mentioned the 1-player mode that they're working on for the upcoming Stretch Goal. Hope to hear more about that when we cross $25k.
Now I don't know if they've had a poke into this thread or not, but they ended the update with 'Which stage 1 boss do you want to see added first?' I did inform them of my thread over here; and I compiled a list about the games and stages for each character announced so far earlier. I'm beginning to wonder if that was a coincidence or not. Though it does please me to hear the possibility of more characters added~ XD
-
Canceled. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/18592227/touhou-project-ft-gs-system/posts)
ZUN doesn't like Kickstarter for doujin stuff.
-
"Nakama" :facepalm:
But that it is nice to know he's working on overseas licensing.
-
I'm glad this got shut down, pretty annoying to see someone just slap touhou on something and bring in wheelbarrows of cash before even producing anything.

Still, the demonstration that something like this can generate 24k in only three days should send the message that overseas licensing is something to take into serious consideration.
-
That's what worries me, I don't want people thinking they can use touhou as a way to get rich quick.
This game was very much a venture focused on profit. Twenty bucks is full price for a commercial card game; it's not in the spirit of doujin at all.

I can't really say much without looking at the costs going into making the cards, the playmats, etcetera but... Twenty bucks is actually really cheap for a stand-alone out of box card game (with 208 cards no less). I have in mind Dominion which is 35-40 bucks at least and only comes with cards, not even the other stuff.
I just feel like you'd be hard-pressed to see a similar product on sale for anything less than $20 bucks, doujin or no. I mean, how much would a Touhou playmat even sell for in Japan? I don't think it'd be cheaper than $10 bucks, that's for sure.
Mostly just playing devil's advocate here, as I fully support ZUN axeing the project. The more I think about it the more 'eh' I feel. That is certainly a lot of money put forward to make a simple card game, and it's not like they are required to list all their exact expenses either.
-
I don't know what kind of deals the GS System team had with artists, but their proposed budget was not outrageously high.
-

Playmats through doujin circles over here run from 2000-3000 yen, so roughly $30 max.
I think one of the reasons why it was so successful is because there hasn't been any sort of halfway-legit outlet for Touhou stuff outside of services like mine (and even then it'd all be in Japanese), so the market's starved. But given the unique circumstances, it's been very hard to fulfill that need.
-
sad to see this happen
but as Nobu said at least we get to see the how huge touhou fandom is
If a doujin card game marker said it's not then it's not |OwO>
been lurking on your post for a while keep up the work
Hope the overseas licensing goes well

Seeing the comments here on this sudden change does please me a fair bit. You all have valid points, and reasons behind them.
The fact that they've managed to communicate with ZUN is at least something they can take from this. After all, the project may have been stopped, but I don't see them just plain giving up on this. And if it turns out that ZUN didn't have a problem with the game, just the way it was being funded, then I can see this game in the future for sure.
As far as the get rich idea, I honestly don't think they had that part in mind. Sure, lots of people pledged, but as some of you have said, that's just our fanbase showing the excitement of playing a physical Touhou Card Game in English. Would they aim to make a profit on it? With the GS System featuring original content, maybe. With it being with something that is copyrighted for like Touhou, no; especially when they know about the rules ZUN laid down in the first place. Which is likely why ZUN frowned at the idea of his content being funded by people in something he had no control over.
However, it does bring more attention to overseas. That was likely to be part of their plan in the first place; whether it succeeded or not. It's quite hard to think if they truly were in the wrong or not. One could say they should have got word from ZUN before booting it up; but at the same time, they probably wanted to get something moving if they thought an answer was never going to come. So some patience would have been nice; but they would have kept asking themselves 'would he have ever got in touch if we didn't put it up to begin with?' Not sure on that answer, in all fairness.
But still, props to them for trying; and certainly getting a lot of people excited for it. Heck, they made sure to take on opinions and feedback where possible; and have been updating every night since it started. Even with this cancellation, I can't see this game going away for good. And price wise, it's about ?11 here in the UK from the $20 they were asking for. Certainly cheaper than most card game decks for sure; and more so when you think that this system wouldn't have booster packs to buy with it. So for me, the value is good.
So yeah, sad to see it go; but at the same, I understand completely why ZUN wanted it down. Thanks for chipping in everyone as well; and hope I don't start any arguments and what not. ^^
