Spirits appear if you exterminate fairies or bosses. The system for lives/bombs is strange, but easy to explain. For the first extra live or bomb, you need 8 spirits. After this, you need +2 (so 10 spirits) and for the next again +2 etc. Compared to previous Touhou games, you will have quite some trouble collecting them as they do not move around like in UFO, nor fall down like pieces of items. Also getting initial full lives and bombs is hard. Unless you 'abuse' your Trance Mode. The 'Trance' Meter is a small skull image located at the left bottom corner of your game. This meter will fill up if you collect grey spirits. There are two ways this meter can be used: 1) By death when you have at least 1 spirit. or 2) When full, hitting the C-button. Trance mode doubles the spirits appearing and also changes their appearance for flavour. (http://www.taihou.nl/th13/spiritstrance.png) rather cute looking spirits? Trance Mode is easy to notice as your screen turns flashy. Your girl's sprite becomes vague and hazy as well as the music changing it's style. The first thing you will notice is a giant timer on your screen, showing the remaining time in trance mode. If you entered this state by death, then you will go pichuun at the end of the timer and lose a life. If you entered it through the C-button, nothing will happen but be aware of your invincibility being gone. Facts about trance mode: > Invincible > Maximum fire power > Greater movement speed. (Particulary Marisa is extremely fast in this mode.) > Does not clear bullets on your screen. > Double the appearance of spirits when killing enemies. > For some girls, pulls the spirits to her. (Hakurei Reimu) > Timer cannot be extended, even if you collect grey spirits while being in this mode. The word 'Trance' probably is placed here because your girl crosses the boundary between life and death in a state of 'trance'. Whether you are dying or manually entering, it remains the same. | (http://i56.tinypic.com/140ztw2.png) trance meter, maximum of three spirits |

You should put info about the alternate endings somewhere... unless it's already there and I miseed it.I don't see any need for this.
Also, what is the difference between them? Different characters appearing or just different dialogue?
I don't spoil endings as they are considered something unique and valuable for most people. Even though I spoiled the girls, it doesn't mean I just take away people's hopes for playing for the endings. That would be plain sad. Therefore there is no use for mentioning the ending mechanisms as people should find that out themselves.Unless I read it wrong, I think he meant that "you should tell them that there ARE alternate endings unlocked by specific conditions" or something like that.
Repostanthe building is the Dream Palace Great Mausoleum
What is the tower-like thing in Stage 5's background ? Is it a reference to some actual building ?
Spirits appear if you exterminate fairies or bosses. 5 live or bomb pieces equals one full live/bomb.8 green pieces for a bomb.
8 green pieces for a bomb. It's goes up like this 8. 10, 12, 15 and I don't even know how many life points after that is but I think it's 18
8 purple pieces for a life, and it goes up with each life you collect.
It's goes up like this 8. 10, 12, 15 and I don't even know how many life points after that is but I think it's 18Confirming this, although I haven't gotten the 18 piece extend either.

*Keikaku means plannedwait... what problem did you have with reimu for extra?
Anyways, old replays seem to be death but that was to be expected. At least, I can finally play Reimu in Extra!
Hopefully I clicked on the right links, because I don't read moonspeak. I just went by instinct. :V
wait... what problem did you have with reimu for extra?
I didn't have that problem
wait... what problem did you have with reimu for extra?
I didn't have that problem
When you 1cced the game with Reimu on Normal Extra wouldn't unlock for her. Hard would have, but not Normal. Many seemed to have had that problem.what... I 1cc'd normal with Reimu and Extra was unlocked
what... I 1cc'd normal with Reimu and Extra was unlocked
On another note, I love how Mamizou doesn't even show how she has bomb immunity. Until now every extra boss after Evil Eye Sigma showed something that showed why bombs were ineffective, from shields to transformations to fazing out of existence. Here, it's just "no sale!"I'm pretty sure Mokou didn't do anything.
There's a version 1.00c already? I was wondering why he took down 1.00c before I got the chance.
Also, Helepolis: thanks for reminding me why I enjoy your game articles so much.It is always my pleasure to do so.
I never realized the trance mode spirits were that cute. The little details that ZUN adds
the building is the Dream Palace Great MausoleumI see. Thanks.
Inside of it is the stage 6 setting
Unless I read it wrong, I think he meant that "you should tell them that there ARE alternate endings unlocked by specific conditions" or something like that.Yes, that's what i meant. Not everyone reads and/or remembers the numbers of the endings.
Everyone wish that starting from ten desires, it will become a trilogy? I hope so since ZUN's final/extra boss isn't a youkai that manipulate desires, which kinda strange considering that the game title is Ten DESIRES, after this ten desires i hope zun continues the story, where the final/the extra boss is the what i said before, a desire youkai.
I don't think the Spirits are very hard to get to, personally. The annoying thing about UFO is having to chase the little buggers in a zig-zag across the screen, through a mine field of danmaku. In 10D, they're just sitting there - getting gradually smaller, sure, but you know where you need to go to get them, and can plot a path through a pattern to get them.Don't forget that the spirits have a much, much bigger "pickup range" than the UFOs did. The game itself is relatively lenient as it gives you more opportunities to safely collect the spirits, be it in between waves or being able to kill enemies before they can release any danmaku.
Miko already fits that qualification, since her true power is to "hear" people's desires.
I have to wonder if anyone has already made Super Mamizou Bros.Reitaisai SP or Winter Ket will probably have new Marisa world ? :V
I can't accept it, what i mean by desire power is that the demon can manipulate the desires of the youkai and humans, to grow it bigger, make them more powerful, turn them into simple being like those fairies which we always face only to fulfill their desires, or maybe turn the desire into nothingness, as if the human has no more goal or dream in their heart. Why exactly would you want that?
Don't forget that the spirits have a much, much bigger "pickup range" than the UFOs did.
Yes, totally. Of course, any pickup range would be bigger than UFO's, considering you need to physically bump the UFOs in order to get them. Ugh.Also, it might just be me, but I think the spirit pick-up range is increased from what it was in the demo. I've felt that it's been easier to collect spirits in the full game than it was in the demo.

I'm pretty sure Mokou didn't do anything.Screen turns blue, she fades out slightly.
Don't enemies drop more spirits on Hard+ anyways? I figured that equated to more Trance opportunities. Thus more lives and bombs on Hard than Normal.Yeah, that is why it's so possible to get so many lives (one... more... seriously what)
Is it just me or do replays desync after patching it to 1.00c?Old ones definitely do. Have you tried a replay made with 1.00c?
Old ones definitely do. Have you tried a replay made with 1.00c?
yeah, stage replays crashed my game =(I managed to watch one of Heartbeam's score runs (2.45 billion) and am in the middle of watching a Youmu Lunatic clear from Royalflare, both made with 1.00c.
yeah, stage replays crashed my game =(
What does the 100c patch change? I can only find a link to the patch on thwiki, not what it actually does.I think it fixes the bug where the game would crash after the extra boss's survival card.
The Fujiwara clan, which destroys the Souga clan, suffered a death of a man who was struck by a thunderbolt, which the Fujiwara clan considered to be caused by a curse in retaliation from the Souga clan. But we know someone from that clan, don't we? That dead man had a son named Fujiwara no Fuhito, who is usually considered as Mokou's father. In short, Mokou is the descendant of people who destroyed Tojiko's family, and Tojiko is related to the people who murdered Mokou's family. I'm really interested in how the doujin fandom might use this.
So I found an interesting comment on a picture of Tojiko on Danbooru that may link her to another character as well...

Also about the game, I love all the themes with the exception of Futo's and Kyoko's, they just feel a bit too meh. The stages have wonderful musics imo.
Hmm..Chen, Ran, and Kanako are all likely since they already had some sprites in 12.3. Obviously, Wriggle, Nitori, Mokou, and Kaguya are also just as likely.Mokouconfirmed for story mode of next fighting game?
Who is likely to be in the next fighting game anyway? Wriggle, Nitori, Kaguya, Mokou? (were supposed to be in 12.3 if I have heard correctly) TSMnoMiko, Tojiko, Futo, Byakuren, Mamizou? Nue, Kanako? Any others who have good reason to be in the next game? The god of Hakurei Shrine?Rin S., Sasha?

I can feel it in my bones. :V

I'm in love with Miko's battle, it's awesome music, fun spellcards and a awesome character make it the best battle in Touhou for me.
By the way that holy war thing is certainly become the third story of my fic :3
And those things in Miko's head are really Headphones or just something else? I just can't picture a legend like her using Headphones =P
Of course, Miko was not an ant.
Miko and the rest were opposed to staying under a temple that was a den of youkai,
and so decided they would build a dojo somewhere new and move there.
This was done in a world called Senkai, where in any crack,
there contained limitless amounts of space.
I'm surprised we haven't seen more music-player/contemporary Miko, now I think about that. :3

Oh yeah. HOMING BULLETS AND CURVY LASERS. AT THE SAME TIME. asdfgh
Hmm... I'm really starting to think ZUN's a freaking geniusHe probably did. Seriously, go spend some time trolling the Touhou wiki and read through all the trivia. Character and spellcard names, backstory, the items they may carry and even their freaking clothing (especially in Yukari's case (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Yukari_Yakumo)) has more to it than meets the eye.
Whether or not he planned the Fujiwara/Soga/Mononobe clan connections
All of the Yakumo family are named after colors. The light frequencies (energies) of the colors are proportional to their powers: Chen (orange) << Ran (indigo) < Yukari (violet). The energy of violet light is the highest in the visible spectrum, and violet light is the boundary between visible and invisible light. Red light (the symbolic color of Remilia Scarlet or Reimu Hakurei) is another boundary, but they are stronger than Chen. Fittingly, when Reimu and Yukari team up in Imperishable Night, they are called the "Boundary Team". In addition to maintaining the Hakurei Barrier, their colors form the two boundaries between visible and invisible light. In addition, the word "yukari" is uncommonly used to mean "border" or "edge", albeit with a different character.
Occasionally, double rainbows form after rainfall?there's the rainbow one usually sees (red on the top, and violet at the bottom), and another, larger, fainter one above it. The colors on the second rainbow are reversed?red on the bottom, and violet at the top. In other words, the outside edges of the rainbow are violet?or, put another way, violet forms the boundary between the sky and the rainbow. Thus, Yukari's given name strongly signifies the idea of boundaries.
I'm in love with Miko's battle, it's awesome music, fun spellcards and a awesome character make it the best battle in Touhou for me.Yeah, if the battle were a song, it would definitely be stuck in my head. The danmaku isn't the best, and the nonspells aren't all too impressive, yet somehow the danmaku, visuals, and song turn the fight into something really magnificent.
Is it ZUN's new thing to make the credits song a remix? If I recall, it's not entirely a "new thing". Thinking off the top of my head, I know that the credits songs for UFO and MoF were remixes of the final boss's themes. (Well MoF, it's not entirely a remix, but it uses that same motif from Suwa Foughten Field that's been used for the Game Over screens for the past several games)
Slightly disappointing.
Miko's non-cards reminded me again how shitty those little blue spinning dot bullets are against a dark background. It felt uninspired and reminded me of horrible SA patterns. I mean, if you use them once fine. But don't repeat the same pattern with just increased difficulty. If we look at Byakuren for example, we can clearly see each of her non-cards were different. Then again, same thing goes for Futo as well. Non-cards is repeat of previous. Same for Yoshika. I think only Kyoko and Seiga had different "style"
I don't know Donut. The first two noncards are exactly similar, just more on your screen. And all the bullets move in random directions. Unless you call micro-dodging a strategy, it is not considered a strategy. I know that Lunatic has those ring-formed shapes, which is probably why you mentioned strategy.
Is it ZUN's new thing to make the credits song a remix?this is what ZUN said about the Staff Roll theme
Slightly disappointing.
The staff roll theme.
This is a different version of Desire Drive.
The sense of speed has mostly been lost, but maybe it has a floating feeling now instead.
Lately I've been wondering if there's a real point to the staff roll.
He probably did.
I'm sick and tired of people who think one part of the Stage 4 boss's theme sounds like another song. (http://www.mediafire.com/?6qi4z3q1y3287cg)
I'm sick and tired of people who think one part of the Stage 4 boss's theme sounds like another song. (http://www.mediafire.com/?6qi4z3q1y3287cg)I still dont hear anything the same besides the ending. I don't get it how people can still say that one song sounds like another song.
I can't hear it either.Oh hey there Barbie Girl. You are in a Barbie World. Made of Plastic, so fantastic! :colonveeplusalpha:
(but the Stage 4 theme DOES seem to be a nice background to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asic_HdPHIQ) if slowed down.)
I wonder what is next, people going to compare Mamizou's theme to Flandre's ?They're going to complain how Zun's running out of ideas and just think everyone in the 10D cast is just a rehash oh wait, there are a couple of people who think that.
I wonder what is next, people going to compare Mamizou's theme to Flandre's ?
Erm.. Nue's third card is pretty much a "Then there will be none" copy. :VCranberry Trap is glaring at you. :V

Well, not really, but... (http://i51.tinypic.com/mic6ea.jpg)I'm tempted to add a picture of a certain Parsee card in there :P
The allegations of ZUN copying music from others or reusing his own are all rather silly. It's as if musical phrases can't be thought up by more than one person.
Well, not really, but... (http://i51.tinypic.com/mic6ea.jpg)Oh hey, that's my picture! :D
Perhaps the most glaring "copied" song is Septette for the Dead Princess, which bears striking similarities to "Beethoven Virus" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtKCNJmARF0). However, beyond that one musical phrase, the rest of Septette is totally different. Some people call this plagiarism on ZUN's part, but I think of it more as a tribute to Beethoven, with his own personal spin on it. (I highly doubt that that entire phrase was invented by coincidence)Yeah, clearly he ripped off that 2007/2008 song in his 2002 game :P
Yeah, clearly he ripped off that 2007/2008 song in his 2002 game :PAhh, my bad.
You could at least have linked to a proper version of the original sonata by Beethoven, where the similarity is still there at the very start, but it's not nearly big enough to talk about "plagiarism".
(Reminds me of that whole discussion a while back about that guy who was all "OMG ZUN STOLE MY OC DESIGN FOR MAMIZOU!!!" :V)About that one, someone linked a picture on IRC recently where characters from all Touhou works, including the printworks, were portrayed, and there was a tanuki amongst them, with a leaf on her head. I suppose that's simply a pretty common way to portray tanuki in human form or something?
Also is it me, or does Mamizou kind of feel like an wise adult or something. Her theme song and appearance kind of keeps giving this feeling for me.

Same thing like portraying Shrinemaiden with sleeves and ribbons?
Also is it me, or does Mamizou kind of feel like an wise adult or something. Her theme song and appearance kind of keeps giving this feeling for me.
It's not just you, she seems kinda like the Older Aunt/Big Sister to me.
Y'know, the sort that's been all over the world and brings home souvenirs from places like Africa, Siberia, and so on.
She just feels like that to me, dunno why though.
Either that, or the "Larger-than Life Fisherwoman", based on her references to the sea/ocean.
I find it hard to see Mamizou as the "trump card" of youkai, much less an equal rival to the kitsune. She just seems to lack... Grandioseness?
there was a tanuki amongst them, with a leaf on her head. I suppose that's simply a pretty common way to portray tanuki in human form or something?Well, you have some sources and stories with the tanuki putting a leaf on its head and chanting before transforming. This one is missing the leaf on its head, but you can see the leaf outside the puf of smoke.
So basically tanuki are ninjasWith giant balls :V
With giant balls :VNow you got me imagining Mamizou singing Great Balls of Fire.

Is it me or was Youmu designed to give you a really hard time with Yoshika's first card? Her slashes keep hitting the spirits on the sides, and her myons can't deal enough damage in a timely fashion :<
Since when did the spirits spawn at Yoshika's sides during her final spellcard? I could've sworn they spawned in a circle around her in the demo.
Is it just me or did Yoshika's last spellcard get a tweak after 1.00b or 1.00c patch? At least on normal, in the trial the blue spirits appeared in a ring around her; same with 1.00a. After the patches, they instead appear mostly to the her sides.
That Eternal Meek spellcard turns her into a disco ball and the spellcard before it basically shows the lights on the disco's floor when you rotate one of those disco balls. I think I know where ZUN designed her now...First Kanako with her rave lights, now Miko. :V Those headphones of hers certainly don't help either. inb4fanartwithKanakoandMikohostingarave.

Not sure why people keep calling Miko's 5th spellcard "like Eternal Meek" seeing as it's absolutely nothing like Eternal Meek.At first glance, it looks like it, but after facing it a few times, I realized that there is actually a pattern to it, whereas Eternal Meek is completely random.
At first glance, it looks like it, but after facing it a few times, I realized that there is actually a pattern to it, whereas Eternal Meek is completely random.Plus Guse Flash actually looks cool while Eternal Meek does not.
Paralel Ending is a ending that is just some funny text or some crazy ideas likeSanae convering to Taoism, you unlock them after beating Extra, to get them you need to end Miko's battle with 3 or more bombs.
I have two questions about the game
1.Is there any new Youmu memes due to Ten Desires?
2.Who is Marisa's new girlfriend? I think she picks up a new one every game she is in.
This is kinda random, but I don't know anywhere to put this.*glass shatters* I hear it. o-o
Lately as I've been listening to the stage 6 theme, I can't help but be reminded a certain unused song from LLS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtyoR0QIXNg
They don't even really sound that similar, but I feel like A Small Desire's Starry Sky has the same kind of energy as this final stage theme would have given LLS had it been used. I wonder if anyone else would think the same way...?

And when he does compose a song that's both completely new and very good, the results are astonishing. That's not to say, though, that just because he "lifts some older phrases" that some of his songs aren't still good. :D

I like how ZUN doesn't seem to know what the hell is going on.
I like the amount of beer bottles that were on the table went ZUN went back to sit down...This. That was the most beautiful thing of the whole video. :3

Lol, ZUN sucks at danmaku.I don't get that video. The guy doesn't move at all yet the comments are all about how awesome he must be for being able to dodge everything. Looks fake to me :ohdear:

Ahem. Interesting watch anyway. If people would stop showering the screen with their comments it would be better though. Like people loudly commenting on a movie in the cinema.
:trollface:I take this as a personal offense, good sir. :colbert:

marisa has the highest dps, minus youmuslash
If all you need to do is stream left to right to left again, over and over, yeah, I imagine the Kinect would be great for that. You are actually on to something. It would be excellent for Ten Desires.

PS does the Marisa focus/unfocus help her achieve higher DPS because of the magic missiles + lasers?
finally scanned, but obviously warning spoilers...look in my DA.Dat tail....... :o

So, the only way to get a decent number of lives/bombs is to Trance at the right points... and the only way to fill your Trance meter at a decent rate is to sit right under the bosses while they are trying to kill you.Actually, it's faster to fill the trance meter by chaining enemies.

Welp, time to start waiting for TH14.
Actually, it's faster to fill the trance meter by chaining enemies.
chainingYou're really not convincing me I should fail at playing this on Easy when I can go beat PCB Normal instead.
You basically don't have to do anything extraordinary to get as many resources as you need. You're not helping, either. If I was getting the resources I needed, I obviously wouldn't be complaining about the difficulty, now, would I?
When can we talk about the new characters outside of this topic?Whoops, forgot to update the news header.

Looketh to thy feet. Now back up. Wherefore art thou? Thou art here to witness the resurrection of the crown prince! Looketh to him. Now back to me. Who is he? He is the saint Shoutoko, able to listen to all ten of thy desires. Look again. The saint is now a young girl!

Also, spirit collection is pretty easy, actually. Make sure you shoot down all enemies in the stage. Only trance when the important fairies come.
Collect spirits after every spell card completion. The game will always give you enough time to get up and back. Only get close to the enemy when it's easy, because although it can really rack up your spirit meter, it's actually not that necessary.

Deathbombing is exactly exactly the same as it's always been. The only reason you think there's a difference is because when you fail, deathtrance pops up.
You can also death...trance (undeathtrance? lifetrance?), which has the exact same timing as a deathbomb, and you won't die at the end. You can tell when you've done it, because the little vwoom sound will be played a bit later than if you had died.

So, while starting up 10D today, something weird happened. The loading screen ended earlier than normal, and the title music started. However, instead of the spinning thing that turns into the title screen, a small, squished screen giving the game's title appeared in the right side of the screen for a few seconds before this happened. Thing is, this is the second time it happened (the first I thought was my imagination). Has this ever happened for anyone else?Hmm, can't say I've ever had that happen to me. Is that fullscreen, by chance? I'd actually love to see that myself. The only game I've had start up weird is MoF, where the textures are screwed up, and a crash comes a little after playing. I have a recording, but it's only a few seconds long due to that. :ohdear:

Mononobe no Taoism.mp3 (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4299736/MotK/Special/Mononobe%20no%20Taoism.mp3)I was totally caught off guard with the awesomeness of that voice clip. The choice for the background music was just perfect.
Erm, changing a bit the topic in hand...At least trying to perfect bosses the normal way is enough to put you in "auto-pilot" through the stage. :V
While I do like Spell Practice, I think it would be better a Boss Practice mode than a Spell Practice. God is it annoying to do the stage many times to perfect the boss x_x.
DO IT!!!
Wait really? What happens?
During her third nonspell, if you kill Yoshika she makes the knife stream she shoots -much- more dense than how it usually is.
During her third nonspell, if you kill Yoshika she makes the knife stream she shoots -much- more dense than how it usually is.What do you know, this is pretty fun.
i think if you keep killing yoshika, she'll eventually slowly go down, towards you making it harder. No, she constantly approaches you. Kill her, wait for Seiga to go down, shoot Seiga, misdirect, repeat is how you do it.
Eh, it's probably worth avoiding hitting her during Seiga's first spell, too. At least on Lunatic, I hear that when she revives there it can get real nasty.
Wait really? What happens?Super Seiga Knife Rain!
Super Seiga Knife Rain!
Well, for her third spell. Her first and second nonspells do nothing special when Yoshika dies, and Seiga doesn't even attempt to revive her.
Speaking of killing Yoshika, someone did a pacifist timeout of Seiga's second spell on lunatic. It becomes so difficult without killing Yoshika later on that the video happens to be a TAS run for 15 fps. I wonder if any of our Touhou lunatics would like to try it.
"Killing" Yoshika during Seiga's spells is so much fun simply because of how she looks when she falls over still looking all happy and waving her arms.Sounds about right. (http://askyoshika.tumblr.com/post/9136128552/how-does-it-feel-to-be-seigas-meat-shield)
It's like "I'm useful :D"
Sounds about right. (http://askyoshika.tumblr.com/post/9136128552/how-does-it-feel-to-be-seigas-meat-shield)And this happened before (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/977294) :3
You mind linking to that video? I can't find it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6AQZUFwyYs
I only timed the second card on hard without killing yoshika, but that's because I don't have the Lunatic version ready to try.Dayum :o
Oh yeah I know that Mamizou's final is supposed to rank up too but I haven't seen it.
Hmm, it's definitely possible seeing as I just got it down to 00.80 seconds. :V
You'll need some really good reflexes and misdirection skills to do this, although Seiga's random movement can sometimes screw you over.
Wasn't that just the normal final phase that kicks in at the end?
Oh yeah I know that Mamizou's final is supposed to rank up too but I haven't seen it.Actually I think it does.
Seiga does what Yoshikan't.
