Of course, why the crazy buffoon didn't just take out his shotgun is beyond me.
Probably had Flaregun habits. Whenever I tote around my Flaregun for a while and forget that I swapped back to my shotty, I tend to neglect it in favor of juuuuust trying to torch my target. Not a good habit to get into.
Re: Medicking
Hell yeah it's fun. I've gotten a Blutsauger and Kritzkreig, along with a Vita-Saw now, and I gotta say - on Payload maps, where everyone is constantly pushing the front lines back and forth, that Kritzkrieg fills up
fast. I can count on getting at least two off in a single life if I'm near the front lines, or if I'm ducking back a ways and healing people as they retreat, I can come forward with probably four Kritz ubers. Heavies, Soldiers, and Demomen get my top priority, but one time on a whim, I attached myself to a Pyro.
We ended up pushing so hard the cart made it from the second checkpoint all the way up to right before the last one in our wake, we were torching everyone and causing so much chaos. All in all, our little rush only lasted about twenty seconds or so, but distracting the other team let the stragglers behind us pick them off as they turned around to chase us, and the Kritz'd Pyro burnt anyone who stood in his way in a damn hurry. Took out an in-progress Engy nest in a heartbeat, too. It was great.
I forget the map, but it's the one that starts out in the canyonade and then goes into the industrial park, where the last checkpoint is down in the bottom of a concrete basin, and the track veers off to the left before it dumps the bomb in.

In short, Medicking is fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun and if you do it right you can turn the game in a short amount of time.
