Old thread here. (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,9940.0.html)
This is the newest iteration of the post your art thread is all. If you don't want to make a thread of your own and just want to show other people the stuff you've drawn or painted, then this is the thread for you!
Keep in mind that the maximum size for pictures is 640 x 480 pixels. If it's bigger, link to it or use a thumbnail. This is so we don't stretch the pages so people with smaller monitors or slower connections than you can load any given page of this thread; overlarge filesizes (which correlate to dimension size) are a thing we don't want slowing people down. Please and thank you.
-
Hasn't the site been doing the resizing on its own for a while now, though?
-
Only on the surface. The original image is still there, being enormous and laggy. This is generally only a problem with overlarge .png files, though. I guess I should clarify that this is more about filesize and not dimensions, thanks.
-
Reminder.
If you are posting images please limit your images to maximum 640x480px and 150k per image. If it is bigger than that then thumbnail and/or link to it.
Large-sized bitmaps may be heavy for RAM (lots of pixels) and CPU (extrapolation).
-
That rule exists for bandwidth purposes. I'm pretty sure any computer post-1999 can handle any not-ginormous image.
-
Check your machine: 24016x8016px, 80M PNG (https://greencubes.org/files//mapFlat_2013-07-02_19-04-07.png) map of a world on a Russian Minecraft-derivative server.
I Chome on my 4x2GHz 4Gb PC haven't shown it, if you're interested.
There's also smaller version, 12008x4008px 29M PNG (https://greencubes.org/files/mapFlat_2013-07-02_19-04-07_small.png)
-
80MB and 29MB PNGs
overlarge .png files
any not-ginormous image.
I think you're trying to make a point where there isn't one to make.

Thanks to those that played along btw. As much as the imageboard format is annoying to navigate around (not to mention it promoted certain behaviors), it was pretty good at short games like this where you don't want to make an entire thread for something so small and short-lasting

Oh god why, the thumbnail of Satori is so painful.
Also I did actually do an OC for xXparadoxXx's thread but unfortunately the forum reverted before I could post it. Viewable here (http://puu.sh/3GgUG.jpg).

I think it has little enough emotion as it is.

No, she looks bored, not emotionless.

Neck is broke. If your nose ends up matching the shoulder or exceeding, somethings wrong there.

This was a fail.
I wanted to make a new simple avatar using Marisa, but after drawing, I didn't realize that when I scale it down to 150 pixels, it's too small. I should've just draw in 150 pixels, instead of the traditional resizing scale.

technically it's not really a problem per se it's actually a good practice to do so ow o anatomy and perspective can be learnt over time but adding details isnt something people can easily do (like me uwu)

A cancelled draft for the (as of the time of writing) current Guilty Alice competition. (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43561671/alice_cookie_jar/truthdobutlie.png)
Was about to add film noir shading effects and monologue when I realised the image doesn't satisfy the mafia requirement.
I fiddled around in MS Paint and drew a Raymoo.
Looks pretty cute, but also fairly two-dimensional.

Simple and effective. Perhaps drawing in a smaller scale would've helped, indeed, or maybe thickening the outline layer.
hey maybe this isnt so bad-
Details look okay, but anatomy's got some issues - particularly the chest, her right wrist, the left hand, and left leg.
Similar issues with Cirno, alongside the red tint.
Maybe my problem is i try to add in as much detail as possible when i lack any skill at all without realizing it :/
Details can be learned, but I believe it requires studying the desired object meticulously. Personally I'd focus on getting down art fundamentals such as perspective, shading, and anatomy before tackling details.

As an engineering student, we design a lot of things, specifically my course in aviation-related. But instead of being traditional, like drawing on a large tech-paper, we use(learning) digital products like AutoCad.
I've used a lot of things like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Paint Tool Sai, and so on...but of course, it was my first time using AutoCad, so I decided to fiddle around a bit. I was gonna make an aircraft, or an engine, or something, but...
I made them a few weeks back. These were both made using a mouse(the reason why some are not proportionate. I haven't tried using my tablet for it yet), it took me hours, and damn...my hand hurt during those times(and decided not to finish Yukari). Atleast I learned some of the tools though. Then screenied to Paint('cause it's faster that way...)
Anyways, I'm not going to go through that ordeal again. I'm thinking of becoming serious about using this program now, making 3D planes and stuff...yea, for "college work", that's it. :V
Note: Don't use AutoCad if you're just gonna draw something...'cause it's not just for drawing.

Yet, something abount them seems a little wrong. :/

Think Remilia broke her neck there.
-
Neck's a bit too long, but definitely not broken.
-
I think it's not that her neck is broken, but that her head seems a bit too off to one side from the neck.
-
Hm, might be that as well
-
When you turn your head at an angle approaching 90 degrees, your neck will also turn along with to around 45 degrees.
The shading makes it look like the neck has not moved at all and that what makes it look like the head look off.

Then a work that could qualify for the current Guilty Alice (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43561671/alice_crates/aya_in_scoot_army.png), but I feel it's just too entrenched into the TF2 fandom to count. I find her right shoulder particularly dissettling. It appears as if it's a detachable Lego arm, and feels separate from the rest of the body.

I guess he doesn't walk to AAA, though. Probably we need to make him aware of your Aya through the Cafe or PM.
Now, when you went to anatomy, her tits seem to be too low, especially for a schoolgirl, since they usually have younger and tighter boobs, though we may also consider Sanae to be a smoker worse than Mokou.
:flowerpower:
On DFC, female nipples occupy nearly the same position as male ones. As letters go further to Z, volume under them increases, but the general attachment points remain on the same ribs. So, Sanae's tits here appear to be hanging a long way from its attachment position down almost to her belly.
*have never seen female boobs IRL (. .)\ may be horribly wrong*
-
[nsfw]http://puu.sh/4KKfe.jpg[/nsfw]
^Drew that recently. Feedback?
Her eyes are too low, and her mouth too high. It gives her a derpy look. Also, don't leave out the nose.
Her head should either be narrower or taller, and her neck is too long.
Her boobs are ginormous and saggy. Given how much of them is visible beneath her top, her nipples ought to be visible.
Her torso is slightly too short, and the shading on her stomach makes her look ripped. (I'm assuming you weren't going for the ripped look :V)
Her arms are a bit too long, her hands shouldn't be able to reach her knees.
Her right leg should be a bit longer, and her left foot should be foreshortened.
That's an extremely awkward way to hold a gohei. :V
-
Duly noted all the advice! I'll be asking a few questions, for clarity, if that's all right. Also, the exaggerated cute face was unintentional lol
@delfigamer:
By "younger and tighter", did you just mean less saggy? And by them being "too low", you mean that from the top they start too low on the torso?
As for the nipples, I just won't ever bother drawing them; just a personal choice :P
@Ballmer: It's the armpit muscle that it's missing right? Because thats the feeling I'm getting right after you mentioned the odd arm.
@Desu_Cake:
I think I get exactly what you meant about the sag, since even considering the physics making breasts sag more after going past a certain size I miscalculated and overdid it despite that. o_o Er, was that right?
As for the areas to work at a time, I'd like to work on the removing the lego-ness of the arm. Any advice regarding that, or should I just keep studying at posemaniacs?
-

Of course everyone has. If you haven't, shame on you people! Go watch it right now!
And all Touhou characters are pretty short I think (the ones that look like they are in their teens), except the older looking characters of course.~ :V
Anyways, I love the way you draw Hatateru.~ So crisp and clean~

Height difference is meant to play out the contrasts. Huge difference between a laid back, carefree binbou miko and a hardened badass :V
There's a way to the clean lines really, you just have to reline a perfected sketch, it's a little tedious but then again it's only tracing. A little effort goes a looooong way~
-
Hatateru: Awesomely clean! Your lines are a thing to aspire to.
I'd say that since all of it looks so wonderfully perspective-d -- it's very 3d even for purely line art -- the yin-yang orbs actually look a little flat by comparison. And this is my personal preference, but I have to go ahead and say it: people almost never stand with their feet turned in like that. I know anime does it all the time, and it looks cute, but it has always been a thing that knocks me out of the "immersion" of looking at a nice art piece, so to speak.

Welp. I'd say this thread is in a pretty sleepy state itself, so occasional art posts here are more like spontaneous life bursts opposed to the normal state which is just Hakugyokurou calm. :V

I did it.
I can't believe... I actually did it.

Welp. I'd say this thread is in a pretty sleepy state itself
People post when they want to I guess, and then in my case there are hardly any times where I finish drawing something (or have something worthwhile) to post.
Like for example; http://imgur.com/TLhzRat
Started on this a couple of months back and finished it a week or two ago. Then due to a combination of having lost interest and realising I couldn't really bring the picture justice if I coloured it, I just left it in a psuedoshaded state like that. I think I'll just stick to simpler designs which I can be sure of colouring to my tastes.
Also first actual draw post.
-
Well the thing is, most people who art frequently have their own art threads - we're kind of the anomalies in this sense :U

Mahou Shoujo Ran? She's cute.

Why you still don't have your own threads? :derp:
Also, what's the difference between ColonVee and ColonYou?
-
Also, what's the difference between ColonVee and ColonYou?
Not much. I've always imagined that colonVee seems a little more smilish than colonYou.
I tend to use :V when I'm being silly, and :U for self-deprecating jokes.

Something else I did. (http://tidalespeon.deviantart.com/art/Traditional-Linde-of-FE-409880202)
Self-feedback below. Feel free to add to, debunk, or reaffirm any of it.
The Fire Emblem design on the rug nearest Linde's feet looks off; the angle lines that make up the sides of it aren't well-aligned with the sides of the rug, unlike as it is on the other one.
(continued) Before you're sure you got the base linearts all done, take a break from the pic for a few days and then come back to it; that way, you can fix stuff like that before it gets too late.
The hair looks off; I know your thought process meant that the hair had to look like it was in the original concept art, but keep in mind that her hair is just a huge ponytail held up by a candy cane.
(continued) Those fancy strand-lines come after you finish the hair's outer shape, nor do you need to worry about just how much of the sides of the head the hair covers; it's not like all artists draw heads the same.
(continued) Just draw the hair like you normally would, and it'll look better than the mess you just made.
The back couch-cushion doesn't really look cushion-y; practice shading such cushions, and notice how it works so the next ver can have nicer-looking cushions. Get a bunch of cushion ref pics, since apparently that one sofa pic is too small for you to get much from it.
Boobs and armpits are placed too low.
Regardless, I'm rather proud of this one!

Something else I did. (http://tidalespeon.deviantart.com/art/Traditional-Linde-of-FE-409880202)
It look rather good
I suggest try not to focus on the detail so much
tho it's good that u realize the flaw u got
if u take a step back and look at the realtionship of the character and the background
she look a bit small for a coach (or the otherway around)
if it's mean to be like that then its k
but having the correct relationship between the thing u draw can rly give a better sense of depth
u can try to make a little tiny icon sketch on the other people to figure out the composition and proportion
then when u are done stuff it in to the actual surface and work on the detail
hope that helps
PS: nice drawing btw |OwO>

These days, I'm not sure what i should put on paper next...

I've been getting better, but I feel that I'm straying far from what I want cause of it :L
-
@Freeze-Ex: Thanks for the feedback and compliment! :) I'll be sure to keep in mind how big I draw the seats relative to what's sitting on them.
@MK_Ultimos47: Pretty good pic, though what was it that you wanted that you were straying away from?

An artstyle that was completely versatile and detail oriented, one that portrays heavy amounts of detail even in monochrome, something like the artworks in Symposium of Post Mysticism. I've been at it for five years, and unknowingly it evolved into something else completely :I

Looks nice, I like it. (I'm awful at giving compliments)
On another note: I had a sudden idea from reading through the GuiltyAlice thread and seeing one of the suggestions for the new theme:
Mima-Scout Cookies (http://imageshack.com/a/img842/5585/nijj.jpg)
Ok, so that character that so many want to return who is said to have been Marisa's teacher is called Bitcoin. I'm okay with that.

I think it's pretty obvious by now that I have an obsession with Cirno.
I drew this head shot at a restaurant on a napkin. I always draw
quick head-shots to thank waiters/waitresses! The image quality
is a little shoddy because I took it on my phone.
Also, it's blue because why not? :derp:
I do have one other image I wanted to share, but is it okay if it isn't related to Touhou related?
The more Touhou the merrier, but I wanted to make sure before I just went and posted it willy-nilly.

I'm fine with it, post ahead.

http://i44.tinypic.com/2z6uzb5.jpg (http://i44.tinypic.com/2z6uzb5.jpg) Shinku from Rozen Maiden! Note this is old art. O-O; I haven't drawn as much as I used to! But I've always liked this one, mistakes and such aside. Dat neck.
I love coloring! I find that using Gimp is especially helpful, but I've been dabbing into Paint Tool SAI lately.
It's nice to see a mix of handrawn and digital art here.

As for another part of the anatomy, her shoulders could use some widening; read somewhere that shoulders are typically about 1/3 the face width, though never more.

Yeah fuck real life. Always getting in the way. Shoulders seem fine to me, though I'm inclined to agree with Delfi about the cheek seeming flat. Not that it's necessarily wrong as it is. Stylistic choices, etc. Eyes seem fine to me but then I'm no expert.
So anyway I drew a hand again. http://i.imgur.com/ISyLzjb.jpg

now if you found better percussion samples or did something fancy with the percussion (like layering sine waves or something not rhythm-wise) it would sound top tier.
-
yeah originally i was messing with percussion samples but then i overtuned them and they started sounding weird so i gave up and just threw in the defaults
im trying to figure out how to make better sounding percussion that has more oomph but is also crisper sounding (like this (https://soundcloud.com/olemlanglie/cysmix-take-a-stand)) but so far just adding reverb and tweaking the equalizer isnt cutting it :V
-
Suikama you need good synths, this is good
-
Just layer a bunch of kicks and claps (or snares) together and then tweak the EQ for each of them. Two kicks ontop of each other and a kick layered onto a clap is pretty much what most people use for their drum patterns (you know that boom-kah thing).
And EQing should really be taking away pretty much all the highs and leaving only the 50-500 Hz range prominent. At least that's what I've been told, it's always easier to just slap on another sample and EQ so you only keep what you want than to force an existing sound into something else.
e: actually i could throw you some decent kicks i've found trawling the vast free sample database of the internet

Oh geez, I haven't posted in my art thread in over a year, so I'll just throw this (http://i.imgur.com/D3coGne.jpg) here.
The first three tiers of the Final Fantasy 6 final boss, drawn mainly from memory, Doing so changed the composition of the tower and the figures upon it a bit. Also, nowhere near as lovely or detailed as how Nomura made and the spiriters adapted it. BV

I feel that the boobs have different sizes, I tried to do a redline to try to show what I am thinking using the smallest breast as the reference size and them trying to fix the left breast's size. Also for me you could put more "curves" in her backs because she is a bit rotated, so you should be able to see her thighs curves.

Just a simple Sakuya head.

@Mk_Ultimos47: Those look good. I like the poses and the coloring, and Utsuho's arm cannon looks great. The faces seem to me to be a few pixels off in several places (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/cirno/littlewing/utsuho.jpg), but that might be more about my stylistic preference than your actual error.
@NanoSatellite: Regarding Nitori, it may be hard to rest your hand on your hip with your palm and fingers flat and your fingers pointing downward. I think you have to grip the hip (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/alara/nitori.jpg) in order to keep your hand from sliding downward. Your Alice is fine, although the color change makes it seem unfamiliar.
@d13 v0n t0t3n: That Chen looks fantastic. Love how you were able to get so much variety of tone and texture out of plain inking. One of her hands seems to be slightly smaller than the other, but that's a minor nitpick. I only wish I could do traditional inking as well as you.
@Luizsan: Excellent job. The foreshortened arm reaching toward the viewer has been tough to draw in my experience, but you nailed it. It really does look like she's throwing a ball of some kind.
@KrackoCloud: The Sakuya is well drawn. No errors that I can see. I usually oversimplify the nose and lips, but you've made them work well with the added detail.
Anyway, here's some new stuff:

Jk, great stuff, welcome aboard!

@Sixten
Thanks for the advice for the Nitori drawing. As for the Alice color changes it's mostly because it is similar to the palette I use in soku ( http://hisouten.koumakan.jp/images//4/41/Alicepalette.png the middle left one here ). I know it's not very recognizable but I felt like changing it up a little bit, and maybe someone will feel special knowing where the palette originated from. I'm still fairly novice at this, but practice might eventually make perfect.
EDIT:
Thoughts on this? I'm having trouble drawing chains and having them look nice while still being in the same style. Theme is more like Paper Mario.

So, I did this a while back for a friend, due to a request. Thanks to the feedback I got during its making, I managed to spot some errors on my own. Like how some parts (like the puddle) are out of perspective, how some were even lopsided, and so on.

Huh, a vector artist. To my knowledge, you'd be the first on this forum.
Personally, I think the outline is a bit too thick and emphasizes itself too much (which is to say that it distracts from Youmu herself), but looks pretty good as an icon or something of the sort.

ty for the feedback, though I've been straying away from using the lineart tool (SAI's name for vectors) on SAI and have been hand drawing the lines instead for practice so I can branch out. The main influence is Paper Mario, but I'm trying to keep that just an influence and develop my own style. I think my Nitori picture from earlier is the last time I used the lineart tool.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38776597/arting/nework8b.png is what I'm playing around with at the moment. I'm trying to keep a rather bold outline still, but not overdo it like on Youmu. I'm also practicing in trying to keep my strokes smooth since I'm finding it rather difficult. I'll post updates or edit this post if I feel like I've made any significant progress.
EDIT: Made some progress on my stream tonight https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38776597/arting/nework8b2.png

I've been experimenting with the stabilizer. I've found turning it off for quicker strokes has been helping, but I still fall back on it when I need to do much slower lines.
As for the Tenshi picture I am running into trouble drawing her right hand, and am postponing my completion of it for now.

Thanks! That's really encouraging to hear.
... This is also kind of strange, because I was intentionally trying to draw outside of my normal style. Does this mean I'm better suited to this one?

@janyhero: Your shading technique is magnificent and I like the high level of detail. I'm with Freeze on this: find some way to preserve your picture when it's done.
@Kracko: It's not dumb, it's good. The heavy black areas remind me of Yuji "Etrian Odyssey" Himukai's black and white stuff, which I admire.
And now for something different: I've been studying Irish folk guitar. Here's my cover of the 6/8 jig/waltz Fanny Power (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/cirno/littlewing/Fanny%20Power.mp3) by Turlough O'Carolan. More relevant to Toho, here's my cover of Orin's Be of Good Cheer (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/cirno/littlewing/Good%20cheer.mp3).
The playing is really sloppy and the recording equipment is the built-in MacBook microphone. But I felt that these recordings were good enough to share.

-
Feedback, please?
As a style, it seems pretty stable. Which means just practice in general. Posture is a bit ambiguous, I can't tell if he's standing or walking. Neck looks a bit wide. But leaving those aside, I'm mostly noticing the thing he has in his mouth. Ocarina? Balloon? Some kind of food? Without details, it looks flat and also ambiguous.
Also, sketching is simple and convenient to get ideas out, but it's good practice to apply line weights and shading while you're at it. Makes it looks that little bit more complete. It also helps you start to think three dimensionally.
-
Thanks for the feedback. Though, since you mentioned that sketches like the one I posted are simple, does that mean it's abnormal to take several hours to finish such a sketch? Because that's how it is for me each time I make a full sketch.
-
No it's very normal to take hours to draw sketches especially if you have no references. There was a post on Reddit about it the other day, even if you have a 'clear' picture of what you want to draw in your mind in actuality it is quite bare bones and time will be taken in order for you to decide how exactly those lines will be placed onto the paper.
Eventually you do get quicker, especially if you've drawn those folds for the billionth time and have rehashed a similar pose another billion times; things will just flow onto the page.
There's also of course the impulse to redraw lines and change your mind on how certain things will look.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38776597/arting/sketch3.png Just sketched this up, was thinking of doing a character sinking in the water type thing. Something like http://danbooru.donmai.us/data/sample/sample-a1e6c5350660e294de974361739b14b8.jpg
Character ideas are welcome, at the moment I'm just sketching a human body.
EDIT: This is actually really hard, drawing upside it challenging me, I almost want to draw her right side up.

My alternate art for Lotus Cobra (http://houseofsixten.com/stealth/alara/cobra_hd/page_000b.jpg) (Magic The Gathering)
When I posted my doujinshi in progress, "Use Your Illusion" over the last year or so, I received a bunch of feedback that I was unable to fully act on due to time constraints. My planned publication for next year isn't a Toho fan book, although it has a few Toho references. It's the Magic The Gathering fan book, "Lotus Cobra is Evil". I have tried to incorporate the feedback from last year into this year's book, namely: screen tones, hand lettering, and a greater range of character designs and expressions. I have also tried to pay greater attention to the dialogue to make it flow better and having different characters talk in different fashion. It's far from perfect, and I've had to cut down on the highly technical backgrounds that are a hallmark of my style. But overall I think it's more polished than before.
I've committed to posting two strips every Wednesday until February 2015. The first post was last week (http://www.houseofsixten.com/hcstaff/?p=3550), and there will be a new one tomorrow. I won't post weekly updates to this thread though.

So, I had a go at drawing trees (http://tidalespeon.deviantart.com/art/Poplar-Tree-Practice-470634607). Here are a (http://puu.sh/asaxl/40ef56b0b0.jpg) couple more I (http://puu.sh/asawM/f741aded50.jpg) drew earlier. During all this, I realized that drawing really is (as they say) a seeing skill. In my older attempts, I didn't notice things in my refs such as how you hardly see the branches on a non-winter poplar tree, how much of the tree the leaves take up, or the general shape of the leaf clumps. When I figured those parts out, I found i can even forgo the branches when drawing this particular type of tree when drawing them as if they're in summer : o
Though currently my work is a far cry from the source, I'll keep studying the refs so my future attempts look more like authentic poplar trees.

Current Youmu WIP. Any suggestions how I should color her?
-
Personally I think the hair looks rather not-Youmu-y. The way the hair is short (esp in the back) and has a round silhouette reminds me more of Satori. Youmu has straighter (and slightly longer) hair that hangs off her head. I wouldn't usually be picky about this, but casual attire means the base character has to look right for recognition. So stick with Youmu colors.

The request is for a specific outfit from a friend: http://www.amazon.de/Xcoser-Kleidung-Cosplay-Pullover-verschluss/dp/B00KFXKU70

Someone suggested that I make the bangs longer on the hairupdate2.png one (same length as hairupdate.png). Preferences on that?
Also thanks for the feedback!
-
My opinion is that Youmu should have bangs that end just above her eyes and otherwise uniform length all around, between chin and shoulder-length. Stylistic preferences vary, but character-wise, I think this description fits her appearance best. I'll be commenting on the 1st edit version.
Well, first ask yourself if you would want that haircut, with the uneven bangs. One does not cut hair into shapes; you part them or clump them together. Anime tends to be a bit forgiving on this, but your bangs are very uneven. Try to keep the length uniform, more or less. You don't have to avoid the eye area like the plague. Anime hair tends to look good even if it covers or is very close to the eyes. So you can either lengthen the right part or shorten the middle part, up to you. If you choose to cover a bit of the top of the eye, then you could make the hair transparent in that area, some people do that.
The 2nd one looks a bit more even, though still a tad unbalanced, it's up to you.

No, I'm rather free atm. I have no eye for folds and creases yet so I can't really say anything about the clothes. Her hair also looks a bit too lumpy near the top and under the headband. The headband probably isn't digging into her head, so just gently/tightly placing it on top of her hair should be fine. Her left hand looks like you cut off her fingers at the knuckles. Though I'm sure it is physically possible to position your hand in such a way that everything can be hidden from the camera behind the thumb, it comes off as slightly lazy. Not to mention it would be an unnatural way to hold your hand so tightly like that anyway.
Also, try to make Myon less like a long sock with a tennis ball in it

Oh, looks like I lost the first one to compare. Though I do remember that I had no associations with Satori when saw it, probably because I imagine Komeijis' hair to be rather curly.
The last picture seems good.
My opinion is that Youmu should have bangs that end just above her eyes.
Well, I, personally, don't think Youmu would let her hair grow over eyes, because, aside from everything else, she is also a warrior and probably wouldn't appreciate some bangs messing with her eyes in the middle of training with those cheating mikos and badass witches.
Though, "everyone has their own Gensokyo", so whatever.
About colors - I think shades of green and gray will do.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38776597/arting/youmurequest.png vs. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/38776597/arting/youmurequest-oldhair.png .
Also thanks everyone for the feedback, I feel the picture is improved now. However I do not know if it's good enough to consider inking and coloring, I think I'll sleep on it. I'll also redo her left hand fingers a bit as well.
-
Well, I, personally, don't think Youmu would let her hair grow over eyes
Not over, I meant more like eyebrow level.
Also, now that you put the old one next to the new one, I'll mention that the old bangs have a better looking flow to it, as opposed to the chunkiness of the new one. Try to get the hair to 'flow into clumps'. Starting the hair strands from higher up generally helps you see how the hair is moving along its path.
-
Woo, now I see the old hair was indeed too long! :V
Eyebrows are fine.
Now I think, does Youmu cut her hair herself, or lets somebody else to do it? Because there's a belief saying that cutting own hair will harm your luck in our culture. Can Youmu's haircut be actually Yuyu's creation?
-

Ver.5 seems better for me.
-
I think ver 5's bangs look better. (Keep in mind that flow doesn't mean drawing clumps and then splitting the ends though, necessarily)
I think the clump of hair on the right--the rightmost bang--is coming in at a really sharp and awkward angle. Try to match the angle with the one on the left, that one looks more natural. The back hair looks better, but now it's longer. See if you can keep the length like ver4, while making it look like ver5.
Alternatively, I'm curious to see what she'll look like if you make the side hairs (the ones in front of her ears) just the tiniest bit longer (just a hair shy of ver 4's length), and make the back hair match that length.

Bangs look much better. I can't tell if the back part looks more like Youmu or not though. I think it might, that was my first impression. I'm impartial to it. Try fill in some colors.

Going to redo the eyes, I need to spend more time on them. Rest of the inking went okay I think.

Woah she looks diseased. Skin is kind of purply. Also, when coloring transparent objects, a good tip is to keep the inside border along the edges opaque.

I'll mess with Myon and the opaque stuff last since I'm still just trying to get the base colors right. I'll look at adjusting her skin (still reworking her eyes), though I did sample her skin color directly from the official art here http://en.touhouwiki.net/images/2/2a/Th13Youmu.png . Maybe I shouldn't do that, or maybe it just looks off because I haven't done shading or tones yet.
-
I think there was a fun story when ZUN picked a horribly wrong skin color, so his art may be not the best of references. :V
-
Strong vivid colors work better with the anime style you seem to be going for. ZUN prefers muted shades. Sampling his colors as a starting point is fine but you should tweak them to fit your drawing style when necessary.

Here are a few of my better works from long before, when I still took requests:

Not really as active with drawing or colored works as I used to be, especially since my scanner started going on a fritz.
No less, I have something planned before I post anything new... :D

Well a friend is working on a RPG maker game and asked me to make a title for him. Figured I'd show it here and see what others think. The name is a bit typical but it's what he requested, and just wanted to show my digital arts skills and hope to improve.
Tried to go for a medieval and futuristic look to match his game. There are still some rough spots especially around the gems and the word Knight didn't turn out how I had pictured it but someday I'll be able to do better. 2 hours of sleep and working and doing signatures and this has taken up so much time, I'm ready for bed lol...

So I've been working on trying to make my own custom sprites for RPGM VXA and finally got around to getting Reimu done. I figured out I can set up a base that close to what I needed and edited the sprite from there, sadly I had to borrow the ribbon some something else which is why it may look out of place, just had to recolor it. Wasn't to sure what hair color I should have gone with, same for the eyes but I guess her hair and eye color depends on the game.

Any thoughts? Tips are always welcome too.
EDIT: Oh and this was made in Game Character Hub, I got mine from Steam for like $15.

I like how the circles brings the pic together. The lips look a bit flat for the feel though. When I'm looking at the eyes, they kind of looked like a weird open smile, maybe put some (hints of) ovals on the lip to give it curvature?

I think it's the anime-istic 'prettiness' that may be keeping you back. There's a bit of a certain 'crudeness' or 'harshness' to Jojo art that makes it distinct.

Seriously though, it's supposed to be a creepy smile, so I'm glad for that. I was worried it would look a little goofy. Now, the hat? Did not expect that. I kind of based her hat-design on tree frogs for aesthetic reasons, but I might look at the more bar-eyed species for a more instantly recognizable interpretation.

While I wait to get into a new free tutoring program, I've been drawing batches of mannequins using photo refs mostly for fun. I just finished one, with the mannequins in somewhat thick bodies. Here it is (warning: oppai):
[nsfw]http://puu.sh/dADBO/78ceea5a52.jpg[/nsfw]
My mistakes (as far as I can see them, anyway) are:
- That the bodies are somewhat inconsistent to each other; I was trying to make the figures the same but in different poses, yet didn't quite get that down.
- I forgot to draw ears on some of them.
- I also forgot how the armpits align with the torsos when an arm or two is raised.
- Though I went for a mildly-thick look (thinner side of the BBW spectrum), I might have not made the heads and torso area round enough to better get that across.
- The back on the middle-left one looks really off. Maybe its because the photo model's hair was too in the way for me to see how the head, neck, torso, and right arm connect...
- Speaking of inconsistencies, I also noticed quite a few inconsistencies in the photo refs I used, such as the shape of the torso, width of the torso, and the V-ish folds in the crotch area. Must be my still-very-flawed visual perception that led to much of the inconsistency.
- I might have drawn the fat folds and bumps wrong, and missed some spots where they should have been.
- Also the collarbones. Looking at refs again, I see that they should have been less pronounced.
- The butt on the middle-left one should have been thicker, and by extension also been shaped like it was resting on a surface rather than if the figure was standing up.
- Some of the hand palms are shaped wrong in relation to foreshortening, and the fingers with their lengths and joints.
I was told by a friend that the figures looked too segmented, especially the three on the bottom, but I don't see how that is. If anyone could clarify that for me, I'd appreciate it; might help with my perception when I do more of these.

I feel that you still need to work on expressions, RJ looks like Reisen doing a good cosplay :V
Also the MTG one has a nice concept, but i think your usual lines dont do the nature-ish part justice...
-
omg it's been like forever, wb
I was told by a friend that the figures looked too segmented, especially the three on the bottom, but I don't see how that is. If anyone could clarify that for me, I'd appreciate it; might help with my perception when I do more of these.
By 'segmented' your friend might mean that the figures seem too clearly divided into parts. As in like, head stacked on top of shoulders/breasts stacked on top of waist area stacked on top of hips/legs. The fat lines and huge breasts might be adding to that effect. Just a few comments, but I don't think that fatty necessarily means huge breasts, just potentially saggy. It may also be hiding parts that you may find hard to draw later. Don't seem to be too affected by gravity either. Head/neck area seems quite devoid of fat despite the rest of the body too. I'm not entirely sure what that line between the buttocks on the middle left is supposed to be.
If you're practicing to get down shapes from references photos, I guess fatty bodies would be good because of all the lumps and curves, but I'd imagine working inside-out would be easier without references in the future since fat clumps in certain places.
For an interesting challenge I just thought of, how about drawing different skeletal poses from reference? If you can acquire some, it may prove amusing and useful.

Ah...Vietnamese Touhou now has its own home-grown product
We'll be making a doujin game soon I heard, and i'd be the artist again.
GG
Wow congratz on that poster, looks amazing. I can also actually tell what month it is now /moonrunes
Good luck on that game, does your circle have like a site or something?
My first speedpaint video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhrgGy5nsWo
Any thoughts?
Quite liking the cat eyes. You have a strange fascination for the fifteenth. Definitely get the last bit sorted out at the end. If you want to continue playing the music, you can simply leave the finished piece onscreen until it ends, or just darken the screen. I'm assuming you're using WMM or something. Should show the finished piece for a bit longer too. Otherwise, not much to say other than that you seem to have an interesting semi-line, semi-painting sort of process going on there.

We recently acquired a coder or two, we already have storywriters... I was the only missing component since we all do stuffs free of charge so it's kinda hard to find an artist like that in our touhou community
We have yet to establish a circle though, nor do we have the intention to

That's actually the right thing to do with art threads: updating it is an exception, not a rule.
At least that's what I've seen here. :V

Welcome back! I see you're as generous as usual.

I quite like styles that have expressive faces. If you feel like making one, then go ahead. Make it special.
-
@Pasu: My characters are often criticized (correctly) for lacking expression, but I don't know about the "looks like Reisen" part. As always, I'll try to do better in the future.
@Lincoln: Good job on that Enterprise, but I already have a different fan artist's representation of Enterprise in my head. Also, it looks like I'm not the only one who takes freaking forever to get the eyes right. I always thought that if I drew every line right the first time, I would speed up my work by more than 4x.
@Savory: I've told you this already in our chat, but that Nazrin is awesome.
(Savory has shown me a number of his works in progress via chat, and he draws the parts of the figure as distorted cylinders before starting the lineart. That's why even if the coloring is flat, the end result seems to have weight and volume.)
@Dr. Yagokoro: Something seems off about the Flandre. Maybe it just needs a little more polish. But damn, that Alice looks great. You might be the person for me to emulate when learning about drawing expressions.
@kanyiffwest: Need to work on those hands. Ask a friend to take a picture of you in that pose and note what's different about the hands.
Anyway, new pieces:
Hypergenesis (MTG) (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/alara/genesis/genesis10_big.jpg)
Guess what day it is! (Kancolle) (http://www.houseofsixten.com/stealth/alara/nenohi.jpg)
I tried to make Nenohi more expressive, even straight-up tracing someone else's work in Panel 3 before reworking it into my style. It seems that my style might be part of the problem.
-

Yeah, that Flandre was kind of rushed and I didn't use a brush I was used to? So I see what you mean. I also think that personally the hands in it are quite off because whenever I draw hands it always looks like they have no bones in their fingers :'/. I am trying to improve on that though!
Also oh gosh I'm glad you like that Alice! I have used the Binary pen before but it's kind of fidgety to use and thank you for thinking my expressions are good enough to draw inspiration from? That really does mean a lot oh goodness .
In terms of art I have drawn a Tsubakura (https://31.media.tumblr.com/9440e6d18afa4ad9677c9af245980b7e/tumblr_nhs3wd9yXq1tfhqd6o2_400.jpg) and a Sukune (https://31.media.tumblr.com/52f0dbaef3527abea1d845a09db46900/tumblr_nhs3wd9yXq1tfhqd6o1_400.jpg) with a lineart brush I recently made that I'm quite fond of. The drawings on the other hand, I don't know how I feel about either.

Thanks for the feedback! Though, what did you mean by working inside-out? And skeletal poses (assuming you didn't literally mean skeletons doing poses)?
-
Thanks for the feedback! Though, what did you mean by working inside-out? And skeletal poses (assuming you didn't literally mean skeletons doing poses)?
Fat clumps in certain parts of the body, in differing amounts for different people. Unless we know how it's attached, the contours of the body may seem rather arbitrary. If you're going to be drawing fatty people in the future without reference, it may be easier to work from the 'initial' human shape (ie: skeleton and some muscles) and then start attaching bags of fat to that figure.
And yeah, I meant that literally. Since you seem to be having fun with your figure studies, I'm suggesting drawing different poses of a basic skeleton. Will probably be very helpful in embedding a solid sense of structure in you. Poses may also come easier.
-
So lately, I've been working on a painting (http://divinefrog.tumblr.com/post/107573907575/satori-and-koishi-in-each-others-clothes) featuring Satori and Koishi, and I think most of the touching up is finally done.
And here's a comic (http://divinefrog.tumblr.com/post/107652411595/i-have-nothing-against-seiga-but-having-so-many) inspired by Touhou/Fantasy Puppet Dance Performance, which is where most of my free time has been going lately. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite fangames.

I think I understand. I'll consider drawing those basic skeleton poses.

I love the coloring! The expressions are both good, and Koishi's hair is neat. Satori's outfit sort of loses its shape near the bottom, though, and we should probably be able to see a little of Koishi's back leg?

Pfff, from what I've seen of the game, this is certainly accurate. The backgrounds are a little sparse (in some cases absent), but I think it's really cute.

Well hey welcome!
They seem rather choppy. The danmakufu folk may find them useful as character sprites, but then some of them seem more like standing rather than flying poses. Orin's sprite you have there is the cutest, imo.

I got em' around 110ms for each frame, but I'm not sure why they're that choppy since they're set at about the same speed as ZUN's (unless I'm off). ??? They are flying, their legs are just referenced from Youmu and Sakuya's sprites respectively (Momiji might look more like she's standing, but that's because her sprite is referenced from Aya and Hatate's, where their legs don't move).

Maybe I exaggerated. Not choppy, but perhaps 'jaggy'. And the movements are really angular in an abrupt sort of way, especially Nue.

Just going to have to get sick enough at art to get picked up by people/companies who can worry about the programming side haha.

Hi guys, I'm new here.
I recently started experimenting with line weight on paper and got some interesting results. I think that the outfit is fairly Remilia like. I am working on a story about a scientific convention where Remilia joins in pretty much only as an excuse to cosplay. :D

I haven't really posted anything here in a while because I've been in kind of a funk in terms of my art recently.
Though here's a drawing of a character (http://40.media.tumblr.com/ff3cd5f3d22374a7a2d4061dd4fc4b77/tumblr_njxy1hFQ8y1tfhqd6o1_1280.jpg) that's part of a thing I'm procrastinating working on but it isn't that great because of said funk I'm in.

Reimu looks very good! Marisa is nice too, but looks a little stumped. Would need longer legs. Her arms are too large and long for that torso, too.

They're essentially recolours, but Moe giving Marisa a haircut caused some problems, namely her "stumpyness" and the fact that her head looks like it doesn't fit her body :V I had the same thought so I originally planned to make her dress a lot slimmer and shorter, but the idea was that Marisa is sitting on her broom and I figured it wouldn't make too much of a difference.
Thanks for noticing!

yesterday (?) i redrew a [shitty] old art piece i did back in 2013, i think. just for the record, that is not yukari or any other touhou character. in fact, i dont even know what or who she was. probably a forgotten oc or s/t.
tl;dr 2013 vs. 2015
it's not great, though. i still have a very long way to go.
edit: my apologies, i think the image was too big. have a puush link instead http://puu.sh/gt66K/d74545a791.jpg (http://puu.sh/gt66K/d74545a791.jpg) also yes ik her collar is shit but im too lazy to fix it :v

Hi I'm new here ^^ All this art is amazing and I love it, but uh...could someone direct me to where I would post musical compositions of my own?
-
Two variants:
1) Right here,
2) Create your own thread and post there.
The worst that could happen if you miss - your post will be just moved to where it should be, so go ahead and do it ;)
-
Okay ^^ I'll just post here then ^^.
I am a music Composer and Remasterer. So far I've been stuck in Touhou style music in my compositions. If you are an expert in touhou music, you'll find that I have borrwed the percussion from ZUN's own pieces, but only because I suck at doing my own percussion. I'm learning though.
I have Two Compositions and Two Remasters I am most proud of.

I wasn't planning to, but now that you mention it, I really do have to push myself more. I've been getting really lazy, and I don't think I've done an actual finished piece in a really long time.

Character dialogue arts (http://i.imgur.com/hlxmkmO.jpg) for the Toho fangame Ephemeral Unnatural Balance (http://porygonproductions.tumblr.com/tagged/devlog) (by ExPorygon).
I don't know why they chose me instead of someone who was better at drawing characters/expressions, but I'm glad to be part of the project.
-
I am highly concerned about their relative sizes. Are they seen from different distance? Otherwise, Tojiko being a whole head higher than Futo seems rather weird for me.
As for expressions, Tojiko's malice is a success. I can tell, I'm good at looking at malicious girls :imagineyunofacehere:
-
All the characters are to scale and viewed from the same distance. And yes, Futo is meant to be tiny, sort of like Yuzuna's Little Futo (http://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/1653468). In ExPorygon's game, the balance of power in Gensokyo is reversed. Futo becomes Tojiko's minion, Shizuha is the more powerful of the Aki sisters, and so on. Most important of all, Rin Satsuki is promoted from apocrypha to main character.

Note it's not a very good tutorial if you're just getting started because he just does a bunch of stuff without really explaining why or how.
However on the other hand because he doesn't waste any time explaining things it's quick and done in realtime so you can see exactly all the steps he takes to make it. Basically it's more of a 'watch me do this from start to finish' rather than a tutorial.

Worked in some Reimu fanart (http://puu.sh/i7ZQg/88f8a031ce.jpg) into my training regimen. Opinions?
Since I'm assuming you would appreciate the technical comments, I'll do just that.
First of all, does this picture look... right, to you? Maybe it's just my preconception of Reimu as being a young girl that having her look so big is jarring. What's immediate jarring to me is the shoulders, they seem very wide. If I cover the head with my hands, it doesn't look as bad, so maybe it is my bias. The 'standard idealized adult female' proportions suggests 2 head lengths for the width of the shoulders. Here you seem to have 2 heads + 1/3 or so. Try reducing it by that bit. The vertical proportions look good.
When people face the extreme right or left, the sternocleidomastoid muscle becomes very prominent (http://beautybible.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/BEAUTIFUL_NECK-630x338.jpg) (the one connecting the chest bone/collar bone to behind the ear). Not as exaggerated in some as in others, but it's something to keep in mind. Reimu seems to be craning her neck forward sideways. If you try it, you'll see that the neck can only bend (a lot) forwards, not in the direction you're facing. So keep the neck upright. Then try to tilt your head up while keep exactly a profile view. Very hard to do, isn't it? You would either need to twist your upper body, or tilt your head back to look up like that.
Both her hands look quite uncomfortable. Especially her right hand. Try gripping your hip like that--for me it slides right off. I have to keep it there by using my arm muscles instead of having it rest there.
So you have this nice S-curve, flowy sort of motion going on for her upper body. Until you hit the legs. They seem to hang there, losing the flowiness in the process. Also, try standing like that, with the legs pointed so awkwardly to the right like that. Uncomfortable isn't it? Also keep in mind when fixing the legs that both legs are not getting an even distribution of weight here. She's supporting her weight on her right leg. People like to prop up their hands on their hips on the side of the body/leg supporting the weight. Try to convey that.
The last thing I can mention is the disconnect between the anime face and the very realistic body proportions everywhere else. Since your goal is to draw from 'the basics', try avoiding simplifying just the one part before you know what to do with the rest of the body to have a whole, unified appearance. Try drawing the face less anime-y exaggerated. Maybe more comic-y. Or just simplified actual face-y. Because anime heads like to have bigger heads in proportion to the body.
Last last tidbit my friend noticed. Where are the sleeves attached? Right now the right sleeve looks like it's attached somewhere behind her, but all along the side of her shirt.
That's all I have to say. Goodluck
-
Thanks for the feedback :) Yeah, my pictures also never look right to me, especially when I cant put my finger on what's wrong. But that's why people generally ask for opinions and such, right? :p Though it sucks that posemanics doesnt have adolescent pose references. Just standard adult and child proportions :/
Didn't realize I drew the shoulders that wide. Looking at the ref I used (http://puu.sh/i9f0P/fb8e5f869d.png), I see I mispercieved the shoulder width (at last of her right shoulder; her left was obscured by the garment in motion). As for everything else, I think I more-or-less get it, since most of the problems with the figure itself are from me not understanding the reference well enough. If I made the eye
As for the sleeves, I meant to draw them connected to the top; instead of the more canonical Detached Sleeves look. The ref pic for reimu I had had them that way, so I decided to follow that rendition choice.
Might as well add my own self-critique I did earlier.
- The wind blowing on her right arm-thing should have made the apparent hole more oval-shapes, leaning towards the direction the wind was blowing.
- The hair needs more detailing.
-- Specifically, with strands behind the ones you see in the result, but darkened out so as to make it look as voluminous as it should.
- I'm not feeling too bad about this mistake, but the position of her left hand looks off.
-- Since I tried replicating that position in front of the mirror, that hand position is really impractical to begin with...unless my perception fooled me again.
- Her right foot is too wide, hence the relative lack of space between her feet (as opposed to how they were in the ref)
-- Toes on her left foot are a bit too short
-- Too many of the toes on her right foot are showing. I should zoom in more when adding the toes
-- Ankle of the right foot is too rounded, ankle of the left took up too much space on the foot
- Torso slightly too short.
- I dunno how to fix this, but I know the way I drew her top as pulled by the wind looks off.
-- Mostly in terms of how her breasts would look with one side of the top clinging to her right breast, but her left one being obscured as that side of the top is being blown by the wind.
The calf on her left leg is too angular
- Toe shapes slightly off, the toes on her right foot not leaning on ground like they should.
- Some of the folds on the skirt are a bit haphazard; I should have angled those folds so as to fit the direction that the fabric was flowing (as per the aforementioned wind-blowing).
-- At least the fold that came from pushing on her thigh looks okay.

I like the face, but on the left edge (our left), try raising the little indent to the eye level, and then round out the forehead a little more. The latter might make it more cuter. Not saying that it isn't already.

Lovely sketches! Wish I were more of a digital magician like people here, tablet-icians and all.
Hmm, Suika's neck. It helps that it's not as long and perfectly straight and parallel anymore. Makes it not look like a cylindrical tree trunk.
A problem may be that the torso, neck, and head appear too separated as distinct objects. The torso as a square, the neck as a cylinder (or rectangle) and the head as a head. Like stacking a daruma.
Back to the neck, an actual neck doesn't curve inward like that--in an hourglass-like shape. If anything, it's more or less straight, shoots straight down. What gives the neck/shoulder area the curve is the trapezius muscle. It resembles more of a hyperbolic curve (in non-muscular people), starting from an area just below the ears outwards towards the shoulders (this is in a front view). It's important to note that the trapezius muscle covers only the back side of the neck/shoulder area. A simple gross exaggeration to help imagine this would be to think of the neck as a cylinder shooting down to the collar bones, then drawing a concave triangle behind the neck starting from the top of the neck (I can't say 'just below the ears', because anime necks are really skinny) to the point on top of the shoulders just before it starts curving down.
-
Both that Reisen and Suika look nice to me, Keiti! Though the cleanliness of your linework does leave some to be desired.

Probably. A 'Post Your Music' thread would make this thread look like mountain dew on a pogostick.
Interesting choices to remix.
My immediate impression of the first one--which continued throughout--was that the texture was unpleasantly thin. You have multiple stuff going on but they're not really blending and working with each other. They're kinda all off in their own corner, leaving the middle-y area meatless. Thinness, or perhaps weirdly transparent. Not that transparency is a bad thing; transparency is a good thing, where everything in the mix is both discernible and contributing (together) to the overall experience. You have the former, but imo not the latter.
The second one didn't give me that impression. It could be just my taste, or because I'm tired, but the instruments seem really airy and, again, meatless.
-
-snip-
Hmm! i see. thanks for your comments. i guess having a thin texture is a recurrent problem in my songs, tbh. I always find it tricky to remake and remaster songs and i guess i may have an easier time composing my own. i have no idea why.
Edit: i forgot to mention that the songs were make for games. my version of evening star was supposed to sound playful and somewhat ominous, with during some parts, sounding beautiful. icemilk magic was supposed to sound powerful overall, but im listening to it again and i guess you're right - it does sound airy. maybe i should use less instruments in my music...

I'm listening to the evening star remix again to try find out what was bugging me about it. I'll tell you what I thought in certain places.
First, there's this weird dissonance in one of the lines panned left in the bass.
The first 2 chord are what struck me immediately upon first listen, and after having listened to it again I think I know why. By 'meatless', it's because you literally have this 2 octave range gap between the only two instruments that are playing at that time (which wouldn't be a problem if not for something in the next next sentence). So you have the crust but no filling. Also, because their sounds/timbres are so distinctive, they feel like independent melodic lines. Which means instead of having the lower instrument supporting the higher one, you have 2 melodic lines that have no lower harmonic support, which only adds to this 'air-y', meatless feeling.
At 0:03 when you start that 3 note descending line, it still feels too distinct for various reasons (probably same as above), still in the middle-y registers, and it's also panned slightly to the left which doesn't help if you want it to support the higher register melodic lines that are panned to the right. And I think that's another thing that's giving this a meatless feeling, there's a sonic-spatial gap in the middle because everything seems to be panned either to the left or to the right. The art of panning in digital mixing is apparently this high art that I don't really understand at all, but from an outsider's perspective, it seems to me that the main focus, the main melodic line and the bass are anchored right in the center while the decorative elements are panned off to the side. So until that flute-sounding instrument comes in at 0:23 there's nothing in the middle for me to focus on, so my ears wander. When the flute-thing does come in, there's finally this anchor that everything else is tied to, and we finally have this nice long support in the lower register bass (strings?), but it's still panned slightly to the left, making it seem like its own little thing.
I don't think having too many or too little instruments is something you're having trouble with. Instead, we seem to have dips but no chips. Salsa and sour cream but no beans. Or deciding on one of them to fill that role (ie: panned center). Then try getting the instruments to sound good together. They're probably all good independently, but they sound too distinctive when put together, fighting against each other to come into focus. What makes the 2nd one better than the 1st is that there's stuff panned center, I can focus on something, they support each other. But that pad is a bit too loud, drowning out everything else.
That's all I have to say for now, hope it helps.

Which one? The sonata, or the artwork itself? My sincere apologies, I am a little confused. :V

The body shape looks very good there, but I personally think her eyes should be higher up on her face and more aligned with it as well. Just my two cents.
On an unrelated note, I drew a Mokou (http://pre01.deviantart.net/4be9/th/pre/f/2015/210/6/1/i_tried_to_draw_mokou_by_flandre495-d939yj4.jpg). I'd like some feedback on this too. :'V
Thanks! Had a feeling that was an issue, though I couldnt figure out how to tilt down the hat to match that eye placement...anyone have any tips for that?
I'd give feedback on that Mokou, but I don't have anything to say other than that it looks good (and that the phoenix needs more detailing, but I know that's because its in the sketch phase).

I'll give you three guesses. Yes, three, because if you get the first two wrong I'm curious what the third one will be.
I wouldn't actually insult someone's work. Well I guess I just did to Beethoven, huh? I'm starting to force myself to listen to his stuff, and I'm beginning to see the light. No, I 'hate' that piece because I just had to play it last quarter--that specific movement--and it was terrible.
-
Speaking of Beethoven, I might be starting a new project. It's a doujinshi concept centred around moe anthropomorphizations of renowned classical composers, and is called Symphonia.
Here, have some sketches of character designs-

Any opinions? I'd like to hear them :)

They suffer from sameface.

They suffer from sameface.
Seeing as they're from different nationalities, it might be important.
But gaaaaaaaah omg the possibilities. Anything: doujinshi, webcomic, 4 koma, I will eat this alive. Good god I wish my listening history weren't so brief and limited (mostly only to 2-3 composers, I'm so ashamed).
Rachmaninoff and Beethoven seem really out of place though, especially the former. At least Beethoven was German.
Omg the possibilities. Chopin-tan would be so... I'm getting like Yutaka, lucky star, vibes.
If you ever do a boke tsukkomi routine in an extra with Rachmaninoff (who I think needs more of a scowl btw) and cuckoolander boke messiah-complex Scriabin-tan, my life will be complete.

Also, Tesla is generally associated with electric power, not nuclear power. I think you might have meant Einstein here.

I'm afraid Einstein would be even denser than Okuu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole)... when he's not Sakuya.
Though I somehow fail to remember a scientist any more appropriate than just Niels Bohr.

Ah! This image is so dark it reminded me of Black Mesa.
-
I'm having a hard time viewing that. At my default brightness setting (lowest) I see black. When I turn it all the way up, I can finally see some lines, though faint. Might want to adjust that. Remember, colour isn't your only tool to express dark tones, you also have contrast!

Really? I can see things rather clearly on my end. Could you be more specific about applying contrast?

How would I go about applying those tones? I've seen the idea of applying various tones, but no specifics on actually doing that. Btw, it shouldn't be a problem that I drew Tenshi black; people often draw fanart of characters with altered physical properties, yet that's not a big deal. : p I appreciate your intent, though.

The main problem you appear to be having when shading darker skinned characters is that you still shade them like lighter skinned characters. This is true of all objects, but it's pretty noticeable on skin if you stare at photos long enough: the way to make a light object look more 3D is to pay attention to the shadows. The way to make a dark object look more 3D is to pay more attention to the highlights. The increased contrast is what gives it the illusion of 3D.
So, let's take that to your drawings. From what I've seen of your drawings you seem to understand how to shade lighter skinned people. It's just rather than seeing it as how you shade lighter skinned people, you take it as how to shade people. So when you transfer the same technique over to your dark skinned characters, they look much flatter because there's just so much dark. So let's take another look at the reference Kinoko posted (http://i.imgur.com/0pJIJcm.png). How many of those shadows do you really see clearly? I'm betting you see the one on the right cheek (our left) and on the right side of the nose. But what about the ones on the chin? The brow bone? The cheeks? Those are all shadows still, you just don't see them as clearly because the base color of her skin is already quite dark. Let's take a look at the skin tone you seem to like to draw too (https://jasminplease.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/beautiful-skin.jpg). On this one the shadows are even more muted and the highlights even more obvious. So, the important thing to remember here is that with dark skinned people the highlights are more important than the shadows.
So how do you apply that to your own drawings? Look at some faces and see how the highlights and shadows work. It'll take you a little bit of time, but eventually you'll know where you should put the highlights on your dark skinned characters.

Thank you very much for the constructive advice, Kitten4u. Yep, it's JS. She's like the Disgust of the group, she loves to fuss over tiny details and does not react well to substandard work. At the end of the day, all this pedantry pays off, though. Frederick the Great can testify.

Been busy doing school work and attending to IRL things, leaving me not much time to do art (which upsets me a lot; gotta keep it up you know?).
To try to get back into the natural swing of things such as sprites, I've been working on some pokemon mystery dungeon sprites to get a better grasp of pixel art and how to simplify things. And I've been playing Super Mystery Dungeon a lot the past few days between classes :p

I can never get the shading down quite well, nor how to position eyes (can't figure out how the hell to do Espurr's eyes).

My random thoughts.
The skirt looks a little too uninteresting in my opinion, how it just kind of folds around her like a plastic bag.
Since you asked about shading, I can't tell where the light source is coming from. Most of the metallic bangles seem to indicate it's coming from the right somewhere, except that one one her left arm. It could be explained away as reflections from her white shirt, but there should still probably be some light from the right too. Also don't forget that the bangles have another plane on them. You shade the big flat side but seem to have missed the top/bottoms of them. The shading on her body on the other hand seems to imply that the light source is coming from above. Shading on her left arm makes it seem like it's concaving in on itself instead of, say, bulging outwards. Hair also seems to imply light source from right. Shadows on ground seem to imply light source from behind to the right. Where the left leg/thigh connects to the hips also looks weird though I can't give a solid say on it since I haven't gotten to that part of my studies yet.
You seem to be comfortable with full body poses though, so good for you.
-
Didn't think I'd ever be posting here since someone could knock over a can of paint and produce something better than I could but hey, I found a reason. Here's a 32x32 Youmu sprite I made for a game I'm trying to make:
Actual size is top left, the bigger one is 9x bigger I think. Since I've never done sprite art stuff in my life, does anyone have any comments/criticism about this? I know the hair ornament 4x4 black square could be better but anything else? Also anyone know any good tutorials for spriting in this size?
edit: also, disregard the lack of the sword sheaths

If you want to get some solid advice and perspective on pixel art, I would suggest checking out wayofthepixel.net
Here (http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?board=2.0) is their general pixel art board where most people post and get critiques and advice. Here (http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?board=11.0) you can find their archived threads where there was very noticeable activity and improvement on the part of the OP, very worth checking out. And then here (http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?topic=3467.0) is their thread on tools and various tutorials, also worth looking through.
Even if you don't make an account, just lurking around can prove very insightful.
I can try give you some critiques right now though. First of all, you're using way too many colors, all you need is a base, shadow, and highlight color, just 3. I think I'm seeing like 5 colors on that hair, that's way too much, especially for such a small sprite. All that detail is going to be lost. You're also missing an outline, I can hardly tell where Youmu's head ends and where the grey background of the forum begins. In order to make the sprite stand out in any context, do an outline. The black square hair ribbon also sticks out like a sore thumb because it's the only shape that's entirely solid and angular compared to everything else.
Here (http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299) is a really general, all-around tutorial that will greatly help you, on PixelJoint. Just ignore that section on sel-out, and don't bring it up on wayofthepixel since it's a bit of a controversial (and already more than dealt with) topic, with the general opinion there being that it's an erroneous, bad technique.
Color palettes always fascinated me when it came to pixel art. This (http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/picking-the-best-colors-for-your-sprite/) tutorial starts to explain some basic color picking choices. Specifically, the idea of 'color ramps' in particular were really fascinating. This (http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/resource-packs/resource-pack-discussion/1250931-how-do-color-palettes-work-exactly) thread has a few posts explaining it, as does this (http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10695) thread. From the not many I've seen pixel artists, I've become a big fan of syosa (http://syosa.deviantart.com/gallery/), and there's a small interview with him here (http://pixeljoint.com/2009/10/03/2938/Pixel_Artist_-_Syosa.htm) where he also talks a bit about color ramps and it's all really interesting and cool. Definitely check it out.
And finally, this (http://www.pixelfor.me/crc/F0000032) is a really cool interactive online tool on developing a color palette.
e: oh, and I thought this gif (http://syosa.deviantart.com/art/WIP-animation-180201585), also by syosa, was a really cool way to show his process when developing pixel animations. I think it's way further down the road, but it's really neat and may perhaps motivate you to continue working on your pixel art.

It does! But it wasn't intentional. The paper is just of good quality and fits the binder I bought. I would have bought blank paper if they had it though

ooh these are beautiful, I'd love to see more of these. I'm a little sad that the seiga pic doesn't have that pretty handwriting of her name shown that the byakuren one does on the upper left (I'd almost want to just see character names written along lol).

Thanks! I'll upload abit more often when I have the chance. I've got a comfortable pace at work recently so some afternoons are good for a bit of idle sketching when there is no work to be done. Is it better if I start a thread or can I just post in the general?

There's no rule about it, but the people that post more would probably prefer keeping their posts all in one thread for collections sake or so they don't accidentally hijack the general thread.

I like how you go from really nice form and more realistic to more 'kawaii' but flatter/less form.
I think I'm at that same weird place where I want to draw with more 3dness/form but can't seem to integrate it with my previous style/idea of 'cute'.
edit: I found a recent-ish one on my phone (https://imgur.com/GK9cEl6). Case in point, though it's one of my more favorite recent ones.
Also, not following guides lol now that I look at it again :V

I made this last year or so, but this time I had enough of the skirt looking like utter crap. I just had to fix it today, I couldn't stand looking at it anymore.

It was not fun to redo :( (3-4 hours to readjust everything so I don't have to redo the coloring and fix my jewel case with the new version)
But at least it doesn't bother me anymore.

That is a nice improvement.

I'm very sorry for bringing this up in here but I'm having trouble. I've tried numerous times to get back into art and I always freeze up when working on anything hand drawn. So figured I'd try to get some kind of practice in through coloring before I begin practicing again, got permission from an artist to practice using their line art (something I've been seeing more lately!) and got to the point where I personally feel satisfied with eyes but had to stop since adding shadows and whatnot is gonna be hard on a laptop mouse so need to get a tablet for better control.
So I'm scared to draw... I need to practice hand drawing but I'm my worst critic top the point i give up before I start, but it's still something I have passion for that I can't express (which I express in other ways like graphic art or logo designs). Is there any advice or similar experience others went through to overcome their own critical self? I do understand that I wont be able to make a masterpiece right off the bat and it takes time. Sorry for bothering you all and thank you very much for taking the time to read this!

Hey Colticide, it's okay. We all have had that problem sometimes.
If you have anything that's stalling you from going forward in terms of digital art, have you tried doodling on paper? In my experience it helps train my abilities to draw whilst having less limitations compared to using a computer mouse.
At the very least, doodle. Get your fears out of the way through paper and pencil, until all your doubts are minimal. Don't be afraid of anything wrong or incorrect, just draw anything you can think of in a way that you could.
Hope that helps. Sorry if I said anything wrong. Just be confident, don't doubt yourself into submission. You'll grow eventually.

The hardest part is getting started, that first step past the line of drawing and not drawing haha! I appreciate the advice, nothing wrong was said! The biggest issue is when one sees so many great artists and it hard to remember that they started out the same way (especially when you look at their early work!). I do have a drawing notebook that I would practice a bit but always felt I was going about it the wrong way, like I'm not drawing to develop my own style but copy a style.
Sorry if I'm being a bit stubborn on this, I don't mean to be I'm always willing to learn. It just takes a lot to really hammer down something you enjoy and want it to look right! Took me years of studying editing and YouTube algorithms to figure out where I want to go with my channel and even then I'm still figuring out where to go and how to do it haha! ^w^
But I appreciate it! Very much appreciate it!

I have this problem, its roots are usually in a lack of self perceived growth and a lack of motivation. The most effective way to keep going is to developing diligence and just keep working. Getting better most of the time isn't really fun, and like everyone else you're just going to have to deal with that. Take care not to develop an active hatred for doing it though. I usually balance study with fun personal pieces (which are also incredibly helpful in applying techniques).
In terms of self criticism, I have come dreadfully aware that my drawing ability is like a sine wave - meaning sometimes I am completely in control and understand my process, and other times I get incredibly frustrated with my inability to achieve results I either want to achieve, or have achieved before.
Short term remedies are to flip through your archive to acknowledge your improvements, or just get over it. Acknowledge that if you have achieved something you can achieve it again, albeit with some revision, or you can achieve your next short term goal with some carefully tailored study.
I recommend also that you actively train your patience. I've only recently recognised this as a problem, and you will probably realise it too later, but as you get better and try more complicated pieces, the amount of time you spend on a piece won't go down. The time you spend will grow and grow, and you will begin to definitely experience 'finish fatigue'. This kind of goes in hand with self criticism, but you will get doubts and mental fatigue when working on your piece. Thoughts like "This doesn't look good" or "I've spent 20 hours on this piece and I just want to restart and hopefully get a better composition and/or design next time". At this point, I usually have to just force myself to work through it, sometimes stopping early for the day, to achieve the maximum learning out of the piece before I resign it. If I want to someday achieve the final piece polish on the other end of this valley I am going to have to learn how to overcome this problem.
Finally some tips on starting pieces. I usually get most of my ideas throughout the day and just quickly scribble them on some paper so I can add them to my idea board later, or for studies just whenever I see something I really want to analyse during my trips through the internet. How about the times when you freeze up? As a digital artist, I dealt with 'white page syndrome' by starting my sketches on 20% grey instead of white, or adopting a silhouette strategy. If you are traditional, you probably can get some tanned paper, it's definitely less daunting. The next strategy is to ease yourself into the flow via gesture drawings - draw some line of actions or boxes to jump start some kind of pose/idea. The silhouette strategy also has this benefit. It is much much much much much much easier to draw off a base then off a blank slate. That's why most people choose to paint off photo plates too. Get good at converting preexisting shapes into an idea, and even if most of them your brain turns down, you'll eventually come across an idea you want to bring further.
These are, I think, most of the concepts that helped me to steadily progress. If you can overcome the battle with yourself, you can focus most of your energy into the technical skill battle, which is hard enough already. Don't take too long of hiatuses either. You can easily lose the psychological wall if you let your rhythm lapse for too long. Keep building that diligence.

Oh hey, it still moves!
Bio? I don't remember him drawing anything, is he someone new?
Ah, I remember him now.
Still can't remember him drawing anything though.
So I am now mildly curious.

This! Thank you so much! Its the exact words that really hit home to what I'm feeling! While it's been far too long since I drew on paper but I use what you had suggested with shapes to bring an idea to something rather than to stare at a blank screen. I used that same technique to make my Reimu sprite a few years ago.
Using sprite pieces to get as close as I can to see where I want to go with it is one of many ways I do graphic art. To a bit of a stretch I do the same with create a characters, (mostly in the one in soul calibur 5's~) hit random until I see something that catches my eye and over weeks make adjustments to them. Never really though about applying the same logic to paper... Thank you very very much! The right words were said!

Bio mentioned this as well, but the advice to not start with a blank canvas is a very good one. Aside from using differing paper tones, it can also help to doodle on the margins to help 'ease' yourself into the page. Some people find it helpful to do abstract or even random swirls and lines (loose flowing, wide scribbles, really) to help get over the initial hesitancy/block, I happen to be one of these. I think I had an example of this waaay long ago back in my thread... ah yah here (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,11839.msg870724.html#msg870724) it is.
While I haven't been practicing this lately, another good piece of advice I picked up was to promise yourself to commit to the least amount of effort everyday, which is simply picking up a pencil and drawing one line in your sketchbook. The point being, by the time you clear you schedule and mental activity to make room for the practice, you'll already be in the right place of mind to do some drawing no matter how small or little.
And the best way to keep on top of things is to get someone to keep you accountable for this. AAA's kinda dead, but posting in here's not a bad idea if you don't want to find someone irl to do it with.
Oh, but don't get discouraged if you do decide to start posting a lot here and start not getting much responses. It gets a little difficult to comment when the same user posts a lot of content in short intervals. If that happens, then requesting for a response on one specific thing will probably be better than asking for a blanket of critique. Pretty sure there's a couple people around that wouldn't mind receiving the occasional pm for short thoughts.
-
That's pretty cool actually! Really shows anything can be made from something! Yeah it is kinda dead but I might still post while. I have other places I can post for other responses or I can even as a few of my artist friends to give their thoughts *albeit I don't want to bother then with subpar stuff lol*
-
So I am now mildly curious.
hey i posted stuff before. long time ago maybe.
i don't really post stuff lately though, not even on pixiv.
-
That must have been really long ago, because I just searched "Alice's" through 68 pages of your messages and haven't found anything.
-
I'm not sure if anyone's said this yet, but another good thing to build up is the ability to just trash drawings. Like the other's said, it's good practice to just get some doodles down onto the canvas and just let loose for a while. However, it's important to keep in mind that doodles are whatever you make of it - small ideas, scribbles, warm ups ,etc.. Opening up a canvas with the intention of cranking out a finished piece just gets tiring after a while, not to mention it puts a ton of pressure on yourself to produce work acceptable by your standards. It's a lot easier to just start over fresh than trying to polish a turd. Plus, you can probably do that same drawing better and faster the second, third, fourth time around.
-
Seconded. From experience, I can say that the pressure and tiredness doesn't do anything good for your motivation (especially when you rarely make anything up to your standards). I've also found that a sort of detached attitude makes drawing much more enjoyable, taking away a lot of the sting that comes from things like a line coming out wrong, or finishing a drawing you wish was a lot better.
-
Very true, "Repetition breeds familiarity. Familiarity breeds confidence. Confidence breeds success." Thank you everyone!

I know this is 11 days late, but I suggest looking at photos of people wearing clothes or in real life and try to figure out what's going on with the forms and the light and make some drawings of those, then you can go back and make your art better. It will be better doing it the more boring way because then you can apply it to all your drawings/paintings than just this specific one.

Looks pretty awesome!

So i just (kinda) finish the drawing and another one with Hecatia, What do ya think :v

Thought I'd post my lil' sharkgirl here:
What do you think?
My very first thought was that her skirt is exactly wakasagihime's. Maybe there's some OC lore reason for it to be that way, but it certainly isn't a good idea to simply copy the design of another character without context, and even with context. Koishi and Satori are (twin?) sisters but even they have different --if similar-- designs. But I do like the texture effect you created on the shading for her skirt, it looks nice.
I like the overall effect you managed to create with her shirt, the shading on the red parts, it looks pretty convincing. Whether it looks correct or not I can't tell you since I'm not so big on drawing clothes and folds. The collar parts look flat compared to the red part of her shirt, especially the left collar (the one on the right side of the picture). They don't seem to rest on her form. Also they look a liiitle off center.

Thank you for the advice, i have also realized a really biggg mistake on the Hecatia's one: I mess up the plannet on Hecatia's head with her hair color, yet never really notice (Facepalm! :V), so I fix it. I also messed a lil' bit with the hue and the plannet to created the three version of her.

Well, she IS supposed to resemble Hime, but I guess I exaggerated a bit. Maybe I'll try to change it a bit, thank you.

It's been raining non-stop over my house, so i feel i need to draw something summer-like to improve my mood... So here's a Kogasa in a swimsuit!

I strongly suggest using references. For example, looking at your own hands to see how they look, or even making a photo of them.

Boxes are pretty good. So are cylinders, though from experience, starting with more angular shapes that you round off later creates much more visually interesting silhouettes.

Did some more revisions of some touhou ocs/fcs I made last year; stage 1 and 2 looked really terrible, so I had to redraw some if not the entire art. I've gotten a lot more confident with Photoshop and drawing with a mouse.
