Opinions on Defiant of Shrine Maiden?
« on: March 29, 2012, 02:55:11 AM »
I have seen topics on several game like Touhou Labyrinth and the Genius of Sapphiros (spelling?)
but almost nothing on the Defiant of Shrine Maiden trilogy.
I am wondering how the games are?
So, to any of those who have tried them, how are they?

For those who don't know what games I am talking about,
here are some links :

DoSM is incredibly unrefined, but it's pretty fun because it's not serious at all. I say unrefined because Hachikuma's coding is not what I'd call top-notch, and it's a poor attempt at trying to emulate Disgaea in terms of statistics (Labyrinth of Touhou does that better, much better). I'd say only play DoSM if you want to see all the things Touhou is cross-over with. I believe Cheetahmen make an appearance, for example. DoSM is, however, one of the very first Touhou RPGs to be developed, so let's not be too critical of it.

Not quite sure how it's in any way like Disgaea. Personally, I found the game fun, mainly because of its interesting battle system. Problem is, there's no English patch, which really makes it hard to play if you can't read Japanese. If you can, then yes, go for it. If not, you may get frustrated and quit like I did.

Statistics are my main concern here. HP values don't go past 10000 until the 2nd DoSM game, and statistics rarely go past 400~600+ late game since 2nd DoSM game and up.

Ok, thanks. ^^
Japanese is not a big issue for me. ^^
As for HPs not being over 10 000, it's not an issue either...
unless your opponent keep doing over 9 500 damage again and again. X D

My guess is that unlike other games like Touhou Labyrinth,
there is not as far as I know a translation patch.
Add on top of that the game is apparently a text heavy Japanese rpg
which lead to not that many people if not trying it
then not lasting long enough through the game.

Games that rely less on text to be played are more accessible.
You could probably easily play a Japanese kirby,
could probably make it through Super Robot Taisen if you try a lot
but would have more trouble with something like Romancing SaGa 2
Anyway, that's my  opinion on the matter.

Of course, if a translation patch would be made,
the situation could change quickly.
But doing those  is a lot of work. ^^;

I really want to try this game but the language barrier is too much. There WAS a translation effort  but i havent heard any news on its progress for like 2-3 years now so im pretty sure its abandoned now. But yeah, the battle system looked really technical and  good. I saw some forum discussion about the game on gensokyo.org and such, but everyone who were discussing it didnt know japanese and i think their opinions werent really fair because of that. Technical+language barrier = bad.

But yeah, i think it halted due to lack of interest with those people, and the game's age, its older than most people are touhou fans so many simply never heard of it.

Edit, btw i you can read japanese, you should also play fushigi no gensokyo. Its got several expansions, an a sequel coming out too iirc. Translation patches were attempted but it wasnt feasible due to technical difficulties. Im hoping 2 will have translation interest without the same issues.

Since there is apparently little info about this the game in English,
I have done a bit of searching and found Let's Play
for those who would like to see how the game is like.

The first two are about Defiant of Shrine Maiden.
Apparently, the game have two route. They both start the same way though.
First one is the Scarlet Devil Mansion route :
http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/7767042#+page=1
Second one is Eientei route :
http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/8405377

Then, in Counterattack of God Human Being,
the EX route was added as a separate mode :
http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/9086359#+page=2

And finally in One More Fight On Only One God!!!
the Slashbuster mode was added.
http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/10861305#+page=1

Once again, if you don't have an account,
use a redirector like this one :
http://www.mmcafe.com/nico.html
Alternatively, add the "sm" part of the video link you want to see to the following link :
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/
For example :
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/video/niconico/sm4113384

While the video titles are all in Japanese,
they are all numbered and put in order.
