Title: MMORPG - Blade and Soul by NCSoft - Free to play
Post by: Helepolis on January 16, 2016, 05:27:12 PM
Heads up to the people who're looking for another major MMORPG. NCSoft has been known for Guild Wars and Lineage2 and now they are releasing Blade and Soul (which has been in closed beta for a while). The game logically has been long long released in Korea but now hits both NA and EU.

Their website: http://www.bladeandsoul.com/en/

If you buy the Founder's pack you can get a headset but since we're 2 days away from release, there is no real reason to buy it. The game is free to play but entails premium stuff or items like fashion or expanding warehouses. So far I haven't detected Pay2Win methods but I wouldn't be surprised if they would be in there. If I am not mistaking, you can play any region (people from EU can play with NA and other way around), but your character is region bound so keep in mind where you create it.

Went my self with 2 characters for now:  Destroyer (Nick: Helepolis) (currently maining) and 2nd Blade Master.

(I forgot which server I roamed, will add it here soon.)

NCSoft can make some nice looking fun games but boy do they tend to ruin them for the money.

What kind of gamble crates/ numbers grind/inventory restrictions exist with this one?

NCS won't be getting me as a customer any time soon, I have to say. Still salty over them killing City -- well more the way they went about it, but still.

Yea, I checked yesterday and there are p2w features like increased Exp and Gold gain from quests. Or crafting materials you can purchase.

p2wftw zzzz...

Increased exp and gold gain aren't deal breakers to be honest, but when you have cash shop only mats that lead to game breaking stuff and stats on costumes that you can only get in cash shop or ridiculous auction prices, that's when things get messy.

I don't know how BnS is going to be, but watch for that (and always be wary of founder packages).

I was interested first, but a lot of people told me that it's really PvP-oriented so.... I don't think I'll try it..

Pay-to-get-ahead-faster or pay-for-convenience aren't really the same as pay-to-win in my opinion. If there was something like a super-powerful weapon you could only get from a super dungeon you had to use RL money to buy passes for, or if paying raised your level cap or something, then I'd consider it pay to win. As long as everyone playing for free can realistically attain what people paying are getting, even if it takes a little longer, I've got no problems with it.

I typically find those games with boosts or premium user packs lend themselves to the oldskool Korean levels of grind.

To be fair, PVP doesn't care about Subscription, or anything you do in PVE in general.
Neither Equipment or your weapon does anything in PVP Arena, Every Class has the same stat / HP as everyone else of the same class.

All the mats you can get in the shop can be farmed with ease.
   - Some other items, of the shop, need to be crafted, this can take some time, since it is time based. (Instant repair hammers and resurrection charms)
EXP doesn't matter that much, its only like 20% form monsters, not much.
Gold is more important since you don't get gold from monsters or drops.
   - If you go into dungeons, you get money from item bets, since this game doesn't have a dice roll system, though. So if you can push other players up during loots and earn money this way.
Costumes don't have stats. Never have, never will.
Arena PVP, as I said, doesn't use items overall, so, in Mirror Maches, both have equal opportunity. NCsoft can also "balance" PVP this way more easy.
Crafting, with a subscription you gain more experience for each crafted item.
   - Subscription, how ever, doesn't reduce the time it takes to craft something.
-- Early Craftitems need 30 minutes to craft, high level items take 20 hours.

played Chinese version for a long while

got ruined by p2w shenanigans

glhf NCSoft!

Chinese Version was horrible in that case. You basically had to buy subscription to do anything for more than 2 hours of gameplay a day.
In the west, many people wouldn't have got the game, if the system was similar to china. EU and NA are very close to what was in Korea.

I typically find those games with boosts or premium user packs lend themselves to the oldskool Korean levels of grind.

I was able to max level within 1 1/2 days with the small bonus you get from Subscription.

Server: EU Windrest
Main: Hineko (Lyn Blade Master)
Second: Dorakyura (Destroyer or Force Master, maybe Warlock if they release it)

Been waiting for years, and God it's finally here.

Also, did the CBT, and even after 3-4 years I think, this game is still horribly optimized(not surprised, most KMMORPGs are), very CPU-intensive.

Also, I didn't know I needed to download a new patcher, since the CBT patcher doesn't work. Now I need to wait a couple of hours before I can play. (Edit: 'cause I'm dumb I didn't understand, lolplox).

I recommend to use the "optimized graphics" option in the graphics setting.(forgot the name, will post it later) You have to disable to graphic settings first.
It mainly disables shadows and some other stuff. Everything still look great, my FPS gone from 40ish to 60 (with limiter) and even during dungeons with heavy AOE, where everyone in teamspeak said their FPS went down <15fps, my FPS was smooth as fuck with 30-40fps.
I'm not using a super strong PC;
I have a i7 2600k and an ATI Radeon HD 5650 (already 4 years old and still running like a boss)

Another tip: Ctrl + F hides other players, as well as their Spell animations. This can reduce your CPU load as well, especially in the PVP area with many other players.

I'm using the new Skylake i7-6700k, and a GTX 970, and I'm still getting 20 fps drops, averaging around 40 as well. It's horrible in towns, and yea I did turn off view distance of far players.
I actually did expect this, since people on the dojoforums and reddit where complaining about optimization that even an R9 290X/390X or a GTX 980, was performing rather decent / poorly. Obviously very CPU-intensive, since everyone else with higher-end GPUs were getting nearly the same FPS counts.

You'd think a machine that can run Witcher 3 fairly well, can do well on a 3-4 yr old game would be maxable, even with higher mid-end rigs...then again, Crysis.

I read that the Korean client got some optimization tweaks that actually improved the game's performance, which I assume has not caught on the newly release NA ver., and I do hope it does soon.  :derp:

I can post you a screen shot of my FPS during pvp quests (as well as my graphics settings),  :o
I was joking in teamspeak, yesterday, that my crappy PC is running B&S better than most of the better PCs.
I heard that you can "cheat" by setting your graphics to Windowed Mode and then back to Fullscreen. Did do something on Korean 1.0 client, at the least.

Played it on day one.  Careful for server overload.  There's a lot of ppl queued to enter in the servers that are available right now, so expect a long wait time.

Also, there's a lot of Region Spammers out there wanting ur moneys.  I'd suggest filtering it out, maybe?

I'm glad that I'm not playing on NA - Mushin. Though EU - Windrest is the biggest server in EU, but it is not heavily overloaded like Mushin

NA here, anyone in Yehara? I'll be glad to create a new character on another server, since I just started recently anyways.
Seriously, we need that optimization patch. I get 70fps min - 120fps max on other areas and light battles, but heavy battles and post-processing are really taxing enough for me to drop down to 20 or less.

The only thing I learned about Tera while playing it was that the leveling and questing were dull as could be, and is what lead to me just dropping the game.

Well the battle system is kind of different in B&S. It's more action-paced than RPG'ish.

I've played some Tera, mainly Open World PVP and PVP "Training" in the Guild. Tera leveling was not the most fun thing to do though.

Tera, with their neat non-target systems, was quite refreshing compared to other targeting based mmos I played before.
When the first BnS promo videos were shown, with ingame footish, I still thought Tera was better, since BnS only uses a hybrid target system with some abilitys that hit enemys around or before you.

After playing BnS in Korean, however, I though different. BnS is way faster in combat. you actually have to react within 1/10 seconds to make a difference and movement speed in combat is not insanely reduce, like in Tera, so it feels just "right", while Tera felt wrong.
Tried Tera, after playing BnS Korea, and I didn't get warm with Tera again.

Can't say mucht about quests, if you played other MMOs you will see many quests similar to other games, but it didn't feel boring in BnS. I've maxed 3 Characters sofar (2 in Korea and one in EU now).

Having played a good bit of BnS yesterday (Blade Dancer), I can now say that:

I agree with this completely.  Tera had a fun combat system compared to its competitors at the time, but BnS takes the overall idea and elevates it.  In addition, traversal and questing are both great improvements over Tera.

The game's design is tight enough that I've soloed a number of early-game "group bosses" through careful play - they have a large hitpoint pool, but my character is more than agile enough to avoid getting hit - and there aren't any "auto-hits" like in your typical MMO either.  The whole game just feels fun.

How this game is horribly optimized...Very CPU-intensive. And I understand it's common in MMORPGs, but I just felt like it's a good idea to show people here what they're gonna expect, performance-wise.

Corsair LPX 16GB, 2x8GB; 2400MHz DDR4
Asus Strix GTX 970

And this game still runs below expected FPS. I hit around 70+ outside towns and dungeons, but averaging around 40 when I'm at towns, and around 20fps when in heavy battles. This is still a very fun game to not just play for the aesthetics and graphics.

HOWEVER, I will note that this is seemingly better than Guild Wars 2's optimization.

I admit, I'm having a lot more fun in this game than I thought I would; it feels like I'm playing my first MMO all over again. The genre's really evolved since my early WoW/City of Hero days. If anything it's a little jarring as I'm likely going to have to sit down and mess with the UI some one of these days. Enjoyed the tutorial though.

Can't really speak up about FPS issues since I'm used to playing on shitty computers and thus minor frame issues are the least of my concerns outside of certain genres (shmups especially).

I have shadows on, and postprocessing stuff + antialiasing, which is taxing in towns.

While in lowest settings, it does keep it above 60 fps during battle compared to highest settings around 20 minimal frame drops(avg around 30, max around 40+)...what I don't get is that when outside battle or in the fields, I get around the same fps as highest settings on, avg around 40, max around 70+.

Edit: Ugh, my 3rd server migration. Went to the newer server, Dochun, 'cause I hate queue times.

Level 35 Destroyer.

I am actually following the story line in this game. Really, and there is one reason for that:

SPOILERS 3X
When Namsoyoo betrayed everybody for her shitty pirate boyfriend, I started hating her. A lot.
And thus I started following the story.

I am digging the Sniper chick in Cinderlands. Yehara not. She is like a granny. . . But her other "sisters" are nice :V

LOL THE YES MEN OUTLAW CREW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMMUGqCzihw

Haven't played Tera or other mentioned ones. I come from Line age 2 mainly where it was heavy grind, PVP is pretty bland and that is about it. Quite surprised and delighted that BnS takes questing casually. You're progressing well in the game naturally if you complete all side-quests before leaving an area/town.

Did 5x duel for a quest. Won 4 (Spin2winftw). I can echo Dora about fast-action and 1/10th second counts. PvP is quite tense and getting your combos out is deciding the match.

So far loving it.

Not this game in particular, but whenever I hear somebody complain about bad English dubbing I always wonder how many games/anime/etc have bad Japanese/Korean voice acting that simply goes unnoticed because most western fans can't speak those languages and thus can't tell "bad" from "good".

That said I agree the VA in this game is pretty awful. Ironically it reminds me of Magna Carta in that regard.  :V

YJ, do all the side quests in each area while doing the main quest.

Muffin, ah that is great. I am curious about the original Korean voice + sub. Going to try it out tonight (after backing up the folder :V

About the VoiceActing, maybe it is because of me but some of the voices were pretty decent or fitting the character I was looking at. Not all of course.

The Warehouse keeper voices are frikken annoying though. Somewhere in Cinderlands there is this female Lyn who's VA sounds as if she is about to cry or in desperation telling me to rest assure as my items are safely stored. Another female human sounds bored out of her mind with a horrible monotone voice. And some cheesy comments they make: "Efficiency is my middle name". Really now?

No Warlock plox NCSoft NA?

I don't mind that they're waiting to implement the class until later, but it's really fuckin' stupid that warlock gear that no one can use still drops :V

Edit: Apparently the reason this game's translation is broken is because it's based off the Chinese version of the game.  Korean -> Chinese -> English... sigh.  Reminds me of old-school speedsubs.

There are actually some censoring involved as well. People with Founder Packs were complaining about it during the CBTs after a lengthy play.

Yesterday was a stream.

EXP curve for the Hongmoon Levels seems mediocre. Similar to Korean Client it seems.

You can access the new levels by just accepting a small quest.
With 5 levels you get 9 extra skillpoints. LVL1 = +1, LVL2 = +4, 3 = +1, 4 = +2, 5 = +1
Hongmoon skillupgrades need to be unlocked via skillbooks and quests. The upgrade require 3 skillpoints to activate.

BSH (the new group dungeon) will seem to have HP pools same as in Korean Client. I wonder about the damage the bosses do, though.
I guess it will be a cake in pieces (if you already did the dungeon before)

Usual MMORPGs:
Friend: Hey wanna play X-Game with us for a while?
Me: Nah, I'm grinding levels and farming items for crafting, weapons, and armors on Y-MMORPG for a few hours.

Blade and Soul:
Friend: Hey wanna play X-Game with us for a while?
Me: Can't, I'm farming this outfit that will not affect my gameplay, stats, or whatsoever other than for purely cosmetic reasons for a few days.

I remember my first few KR server plays. :V

Finished the first act yesterday finally. I knew
Namsoyoo would become a traitor because of her loading screen image in Blackram colors, but holy fucking shit was that chapter still intense. Fathers dying, the village basically burned to the ground. And how does she react? Like a complete and utter heartless bitch.

I'm rarely one who cares enough about an NPC or enemy to actually take pleasure in killing an enemy in a video game, but damn if she isn't on my hit list. Considering she has given no indication of being a fighter, I doubt the player will be given the chance to give her what's coming. That leave one of the big enemies to stab her in the back or maybe even Dochan (though I admit he doesn't strike me as the kind of person who'd kill his own adopted daughter, no matter how badly she may deserve it).

The storytelling in this game is actually pretty amazing all things considered. It's like I'm playing a high-quality single-player RPG rather than an MMO at times.

The first two-thirds of the game (as it's currently out) are really great from a storytelling perspective as far as MMOs are concerned.

I'm surprised you guys are liking the story so far. You probably won't if you played in the Asian regions with English translators(I played on a KR friend's account, 'cause I can't actually register being a non-Korean. I had him summarize the story), however I also think the English patches work(no clue, didn't bother).

Story for me is so-so, considering the censorship had the story dumbed-down quite a bit especially in the 3rd Act, like the
time travel
part, made some pretty obvious plotholes, and sort of removed some Asian aspects in the story. It actually just looked like it became a generic plot between Good vs Evil.

My most disappointment should stem from the fact that they just made most important characters, including yourself, think and act like idiots...most of the time.

If they retained some of the original stuff, this could've been a very intriguing single-player MMO. And that's saying something for me, since I usually don't give a damn about MMORPGs' stories.

I guess NA video game localizations is hard work. :derp:

Also, I tried crafting gems for the first time yesterday.  Wasted 50 silver before I actually got a successful transmute.

Somebody help me I can't stop playing this game it's sucking away my life.

My god this story is crazy good. I'm curious how much "censoring" actually affected this game in the first two acts because it's tearing me apart as-is in Act II. (I'm trying not to spoiler myself so I'll look back after I finish the main story if/when that happens).

Thoughts summarized:

Aw finally a nice couple.
Holy shit these cult guys are real bastards aren't they. Brainwashing. Kidnapping. Why would a player join their faction?
Ok outside of the guy I first met the Army seems to be full of shitheads too.
Wow ok the Army really is full of shitheads. Caring more about your stomach than kidnapped people really? I understand there's a war but still...
Oh god I think they are raising death flags for Baymu. I hope I'm wrong.
Oh god they just killed Baymu god fucking dammit. ;_;

Ok this General guy in the desert sounds like a real asshole. Is being a despicable human being a requirement for being a ranking Stratus officer or something?
Oh god this quest chain. Just when I started to really despise Lusung they do this...
OH GOD THIS QUEST CHAIN!
THEY JUST BEAT HER UNCONSCIOUS WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK OH MY GOD!
I hope I'm not actually attacking people and it's just a dream...
It's not just a dream...

I just hit mirage earlier today and had to take a break because I just couldn't take anymore of this.
Please devs I'm sorry for anything bad I thought about Dodom and Chengum I'll do anything to deal with their stupid antics over this. :(

Get them from the Market Place, especially the Shining Pentagon stones can get really expensive with many fails. (You need 5 Soulstones to role once, which is about 1g50s market value)

If you can craft Diamond Gems, don't waste your Pentagon fragments on the other Shiny Stones, craft the baggys and sell them. You can get ~5g each.
You could also open it and get a +25 Attackpower Diamond Gem, which sells for ~30g (or more) but the chance to get it is low.
Next patch will bring new Gem Crafting stuff. You will be able to craft Shiny Hexagon Gems, and the Diamond +35 Attackpower Gem will be worth several hundred gold. (Also costs ~5g+ to craft)

Tbh they should not have shown storyline characters in the loading screens before you actually got introduced with them at least once. It kind of feels major spoiler.

It's a nice detail that if you do the questline again on an alt, especially if you are a class that doesn't have him make it obvious that he's sick (Summoner does a good job at this) you notice things like his skin gets paler and the darkness around his eyes slowly grows more prominent with each meeting. It's something I completely overlooked my first character (Summoner) and thus that last meeting hit harder than it probably would've had I leveled, say, a Destroyer instead.

I have no problem with gamble crates so long as you have an alternative option to purchase the items within. Having a costume that you can only get via gambling reminds me too much of why I stopped playing gatcha games like Love Live. I'd prefer it to be more like a gambling bundle, where it costs no more than the worst-case scenario (with the percentages adjusted accordingly) but every item within can be purchased separately. It's not like the items in the crate aside from the costume are bad either from what I've heard, it'd still be worth it.

I know, when I saw his eyes getting darker, initially I was all "whoa you okay there, buddy?" though with my potato of a laptop, I'm surprised I noticed even that much.

speaking of Summoner and Hajoon, he did call me one, despite the fact I'm a tiny fox with a tiny sword.
Asking your friend to wear your clothes after you die is a little wierd, but whatever. There could have been stranger quest rewards.

I don't have that much of an issue with them, but locking content that's otherwise obtainable (on other servers) behind them is just bad manners.  Plus they tend to drive people away from this sort of game in droves.

With that said, I bought one box for fun (I had to buy some NC coins to pick up one dragon pouch) and
got the costume
so I can't complain too much this time around :V

Yesterday was a good day, Opened one of the gamble crates with Ncoins I still have left. Got the Outfit right away. Everyone hating on me now, even though the outfit looks shit on Female Lyn.

It is not worth buying this chest, whatever you do, don't do it!

Funny thing, people are trading ncoins for Ingame gold (and vice versa). Find someone to trade and you can get cashshop items for ingame gold. Currently it is like 1g 50s for 100 ncoins. So a normal cashshop outfit is only 15 gold (or 3 days worth of dailys lol)
The trading rates are currently quite low, might go up in the future. Though I think, it might stay on that value for some time. With upcoming changes and decay of market value for items, it gets harder and harder to earn lots of gold.

So I've just finished Act III and holy fuck.

We abandoned our Hongmoon teachings and basically embraced the dark side. Honestly, I would never expected anything like this in a MMORPG from all things.
Does this mean Mushin is after revenge too? Are there TWO evil sides to this whole plot? I need to sit down and process all of this.

So now it's time to wait for more content while making some dosh, I guess.

Well it seems Jinsoyun uses Jiwan's sword. And she was the one who saved the little Jinsoyun in the cutscene where they showed the battle of the past. There seems to be more behind the the reason of straying from the Hong Moon path. The question is whether Mushin and Jinsoyun are also battling for power. It could well be (major speculation) that Jinsoyun isn't as bad as we think she is. Remember when she killed Lusung? She called him a person who desires Mortal Greed when he tried to snatch Mushin's legacy.

Passed my certification exams yesterday and continued leveling. I was 44 at 70% or so. After doing the remaining quests, became level 45.

Also, while doing Vice Admiral Poharan I noticed this:

In the original versions of the game, your character's moral ambiguity, choosing between right or wrong in the main and side quests points a bit on how the story would follow, like if you should try to kill someone you shouldn't, or feel any remorse in killing, doing bad stuff and such. The NA version didn't make this too noticeable or how you would say it was dumbed-down a lot, but only on some characters saying "There's some dark aura in you", or "Revenge is not the option, yada yada...". It's just your stereotypical Hero archetype vs Evil doers for the most of the game. Making you, the player feel quite good about himself not doing anything bad(atleast what you think) until the end of Act 3.

Also, while doing Vice Admiral Poharan I noticed this:

The game would be censored hard, if they tried to release it with PEGI12. Which they didn't (thanksfully)

Also, on some (or many) dobok females cleary don't have a bra (or what ever) beneath their outfit.
People with boobs slider on max can poke your eyes out.

A Clan member told me, why they changed the race name of "Kun" to "Yun". Because "Kun" (spoken) was a very old but very insulting swearword in Britain. The more you know.
Regarding the translations, a lot of stuff was taken from Russian Fan Translations. Basically the game was translated from Korean --> Chinese --> Russian --> English.

Damn, that is sad. I've heard of a run of a Clan mate where some people bid the thing up to 56g (while the market price was 40g), so weird.
Also, someone bid 1,80g for 2 Moonwater Tears yesterday, Easy money, I guess :V

Upgrade some stuff yesterday, 20 Gold + 8 gold in upgrading, 120 soulstones,  12 Moonwater Transformationens stones and 50 poharan perfume gone to waste.
Next upgrade of the weapon requires another 7 Moonwater Transformation stones and 110 Soulstones. Let the farming begin
though I could actually do that, I lend 10 moonwater trans stones to friends that I gonna get back this evening, I should also reach 100 soulstones, but I guess I gonna sell it. I don't have enough weapons to maxout the True Siren Weapon, for now. Gonna need ~100 weapons and 15g to upgrade with them.

If, on Wednesday, you can buy Soulstones for Arena "beans", the prices for soulstones will drop for sure. So get your PVP skills ready. Get gold or go home.

Sounds like different economy for sure. On Wild Springs currently Moonwater Tear goes for 39-40s each. Moonwater Trans Stone for 5g.

Going to grind tonight Brightstone again. I saved up 18g but spend 7g for upgrading my weapon. Probably today I'll get 15g again and hopefully be able to outbid people. People aren't quite bright during dungeons. When the 2x Moonwater is auctioned, I usually get it for 30-40s. Then I sell them for 40s each :V

Same with Cinderland Trans Stones. Usual price is 12-14s. Some dumb people put them for 8s. Buy and re-sell.

Did go BSH4 yesterday, wow the twins are hard, their phase switching is so damn accurate, you really have to time attack in your team. I doubt that random teams can thing of doing this for a while.

Compared to that, POH4 with only 2 people was easier.

Also funny, that I got both the male Dobok from BSH24 final boss, as well as the female Dobok of the twins, and non can be equipped, because Female Lyn can't wear either.  :V

very long, quite hard bosses, you can't really skip enemys, unlike BSH
8th floor of Mushin Tower
you will fight Mushin himself in 3 hard stages
and a new ranged class will be available (for Jin and Lyn race), called Warlock.

So I'm playing B&S Taiwan again, cause tbh, I have slightly better ping there due to my location. Since they updated their English Patch more accurately thanks to the release of the NA ver., I decided to play TW again(for now) 'cause they have more content.

Apparently what I noticed is that the optimization tweaks which were in the CN and KR servers, is also in TW. The FPS difference is like night and day esp. during combat and heavy-intense background effects. I have a higher minimum of 30-35 and a higher maximum of 100-120 dependent on some locations, and an average of 60-70.

I haven't played NA ever since the new update, right after I capped at 45 with my Assassin. Will probably play again once they do some of the optimization as well.
