Title: All new account registrations are currently closed (UPDATE: reopened)
Post by: helvetica on December 12, 2012, 09:15:39 AM
I have disabled new account registration for the time being, no ETA on when it will be reopened.

Sometime late last night someone with a dumb bot net decided registering a new account every 2 seconds was cute.  I currently have about 5000 accounts I need to purge.  Shockingly enough the server had no problems handling the load, and so far no spam posts have occurred.

Apologies for the inconveniences.  If you registered in the past 24 hours you're probably gonna lose your account.  Please register again after things are back to normal.

UPDATE:
Registrations are reenabled, all users with zero posts got purged.  Please reregister and apologies for any inconveniences.

Are you in a way flattered that spammers now consider MotK a lucrative audience for sales?

Oh don't tempt me, trust me I've considered going down the dark side and enabling ads but then I wake up and realize it was just a nightmare.

And here I thought we were breaking records when our monthly statistics for new members multiplied by 10.

Maybe put an email or something in the headline thing so real people can ask for new accounts to be created manually or something?

I agree on this one, although we could make it a bit stricter by having only a set number of registrations to be approved weekly. Just a suggestion though.

I will probably implement a policy where zero post accounts get regularly flushed.  I already delete zero post accounts that haven't been logged into for 30 days, and it looks like bot nets are going to continue to just register accounts in some lame attempt to crush us.

I would say a implementing CAPTCHA is in order.

EDIT: Looks like you guys already have one in place. Has Shrinemaiden always had one for registrations though?

CAPTCHAs don't really work anymore.  Even the best of CAPTCHAs is broken by paying someone a quarter an hour to solve CAPTCHAs.

We have a system in place to block spam messages, and no spam was actually posted, they just managed to get past the registration step.  We have a CAPTCHA along with a simple question and answer you have to answer to register, and it is asked every time you post or send a PM until you get 10 posts.  Also new threads from users with less than 3 posts are automatically put into an approval queue.

Someone finally took a look at the site and answered the question and hardcoded a bot to spam registrations.  This was mostly harmless, just annoying more than anything.  I changed the question and added a few more and so far nothing since.

Welp, apparently I thought 25 - 4 was 19 not 21.  Sorry for everyone trying to register or.

Just attach a bunch of the easy toohoo questions from #triviamaiden and randomly ask them lol

I mean before it was like "Sakuya is a ____" or whatever, why would you need to go to SKILL-TESTING QUESTION?

Is a small greeting delay something worth considering? I would imagine a bot registering would take a very short time to fill out the forms, except for maybe the captcha I guess. Eh.

New registrations should receive approval upon completion of a 10-question true-false quiz about Touhou.

Do you have the accounts' IP address? Have they all got the same one?

Not all, but many of them were from the same IP. Imagine my amusement checking the profile of one of them and seeing that there about 50 other gibberish account names under the same address.
