I decided to start my own thread, since it seems to be legio around here.
I realized I hadn't drawn Utshou before, so let's start with her! The burning raven of Hell! The Nuclear Nuisance! The vengeful fist of an angry god! The power of a thousand suns! She who put the "end" in "endboss"! She who put "Sweet mother of mercy!" in "OH GOD WHAT THE HELL"! She who was friends with a catgirl! The rumbling inferno of the deepest earth, and a pretty awesome girl all around. Cheers.
-
That control rod's lookin' pretty fucking sweet. Even has crosshairs on it, will she bother to aim now?
-
Thanks. Nah, she'll probably just keep throwing suns everywhere.
I finished my Parsee figurine!
I think it turned out pretty well, after all. It's only my second model. This was made with Super Sculpey(oven-baking clay), but I want to try out Magic Sculpt(two-part epoxy putty) as well.
Painted with Citadel and Vallejo paints.
-
Wow, how long did Parsee take you to make?
-
A couple of weeks, all in all. I didn't really count, but likely 20+ hours.
-
Did the clay dry out before baking?
-
No, it doesn't dry, but I baked her a little when the base body with underpants and head were done, to avoid messing it up later. So it's possible to bake it in layers to secure what's been done, but it's harder to fasten fresh clay on the baked surface later.
See the gallery I linked in the general art thread for more shots of the building process, or see my Deviantart gallery (http://ragathol.deviantart.com) for even more info.
Here's a face shot.
-
I love the sense of movement you put into Utsuho, her crazy face is awesome and, of course, your colours are great. Parsee is also cool, I'm loving your attention to detail (like her sock falling down) and the detail on the base is wonderful. :3
-
Dat Okuu.
I just love any drawing of Utsuho that displays that sort of emotion on her face and your style lends itself so well to that sort of face.
Yeah, that's all I've got to say, now to stare at it some more.
-
Thanks! Have some more, due to the previous lack of Utsuhos!
-
Her mouth seems oddly small in that one. Kind of expected it to be bigger from your previous picture.
And god damn I love how you did the stretching lines in her shirt around the bottom of her breasts. That's something that's always tripped me up. I also like how she's wearing her arm cannon on her right arm and not over it (since we can see her hand and all).
-
This is moeblob mode, mouths don't get larger than that!
Thanks, I wanted to use both her hands, so it's an external cannon glove this time.
-
That's moeblob mode? She looks ready to bite someone's face off... or at least nibble at their nose.
I'll agree with the cannon glove being a nice idea though.
-
It's as moeblob as I can get :(
-
Raga, your art is still awesome!
May I request a Suwako?
-
It's as moeblob as I can get :(
There there. *pat*
I think it's just the expression that makes me think that, her actual facial shape is noticably more "blobby" than usual but her teeth and eyebrows adds up into making her look threatening anyways.
-
She is an evil god, after all.
I should draw Suwako! Comin' up.
Happy Birthday, Yukari-sama!
Ran... do I really look this old..?!
-
I can just see her head twitching as she tries to turn it, like a malfunctioning robot. Along with a slow creaaaaaaaaaaaaaak as she turns her head 180 degrees.
-
Haha, nice one. Love how you draw the faces, they convey the whole situation perfectly without any need for words.
-
Thanks!
Here are some "notes" from various meetings and seminars I've attended lately.
-
Hahahaha yeah
Yoshika's fight is pretty much "here have a fucking pile of kunais"
-
What's Marisa saying in her word bubble?
-
Stuffman: An awful lot of knives overall in TD... Boss 5 has even taken Sakuya's knives!
Takakura: Just some notes from my co-operative building society's meeting(I'm the secretary)... "Commissioning letter from Ziffran Accounting for accounting services has arrived."
-
Two more sketches from today.
-
...
SATORI!
I love Satori. :3
Orin's pose is really cute as well.
-
Hmm. This might be a weird question, but: Rags, if you had to draw the Komeijis without clothing, where would you attach the cords of their Third Eyes to? Clothing is good at hiding the parts where the cords must enter the body, so you can never see that sort of thing.
-
...
SATORI!
I love Satori. :3
This man has the right idea.
Also for a moment I thought there was a skull in Orin's ribbon but it was probably just my mind playing tricks on me.
-

One is obviously attached to her hairband heart, which I guess is more of a permanent thing. The others should go into her neck or something.
Marohukuu: Yes, it's skulls.
-
But in Satori's ZUN art the cords are attached to the headband, their arms (there are hearts on their sleeves), one goes near her collar, and another goes near what is arguably her "private" area.
With Koishi she just has two cords attached to her shoes.
-
I think the real mystery here is how on earth they take off/put on their clothes whilst still keeping the cords and eye outside said clothes. Unless they just sort of phase through or have a shitload of zips and buttons, which would be most hilarious to see.
-
ZUN planning or following any reason? Why I never--
-
I imagine the Satoris having them wiggle out of the way, by detaching or retracting to the eyeball...
anyway, cool Parsee model there, fantastic work... seems to be hard work trying to find those materials. once I have some money to spare on new years I guess I will try to get a clay-doll maker to make a Touhou... they say it is about 50 dollars to make one, kinda cool on that.
(I still really like that old NSFW Hina you posted on pooshl many moons ago)
-
I really like that Parsee fire :o
very nice
-
Royal moonspeak: Thanks, Parsee was really fun to make. I'm thinking of doing Meiling later, she hasn't got a lot of frills either...
50 bux for something like that is really cheap, it takes a lot of time to make. Hell, even most mass-pressed garage kits are more expensive. So if you can get that, good for you.
I did a NSFW Hina? Hmm... can't remember that. I think I've only drawn Hina once or twice, and it wasn't very properly done. But well, if you say so, that's great!
Satorin: Thank you!

Some face sketches for my WIP story about Patchouli's life.
-
Some face sketches for my WIP story about Patchouli's life.
A new doujin from you, Rags? Sounds promising.
-
Yeah, I'll try have it done till the summer. I'm up to 37 pages now, and I'm still writing, so this one will be quite a bit heftier than usual. It's probably going to end up around 60 pages...
-
Ragathol, horry sheet
I've loved your work since the glory days of /azu/.
I don't often come into the art thread. But when I do, it's to refresh a Ragathol thread. Stay arteestic, my friends.
Edit: how much to have that sketch of China turned into full One Art Please and colored? Name your price.
-
A doujin about Patchouli's life? You have me hooked!
Those sketches already look promising. Young Patchy~
-
Meibatlingman: Thank you very much~
Usually I take $50 for a full color piece, but since most of the sketching is done already, I guess I could take 5 off. Drop me a PM if you're interested.
Sakana: It's quite text-heavy so it'll be a lot to read! And they haven't even met Sakuya yet... I just hope people will think it's interesting.
-
Think you could do something a la traditional Chinese-style artwork? Y'know, the whole minimalist thing? Featuring Meiling.
I'd love something subtle enough that it can be hung in our house. And I'm talking decently sized, like at least 24" across.
Think it's doable? I know your repertoire tends otherwise but I figured I'd ask.
-
Hmm, I dunno... I haven't done anything like that before. But it'd be interesting to try, I guess. But it'll be more expensive if you want something with a landscape and all that, in a technique that takes longer for me.
-
The comic is well underway, and I should be able to post some sample pages soon. It's pretty interesting to draw 19th century fashion and buildings, but those old mansions sure have a lot of lines.
But I can dress Patchy up in a lot of different dresses and hairdos, so it's worth it. Only 10 pages to go until I can start drawing Remilia regularly too, yay.
In other news, I've started work on a new sculpture. I thought of Meiling, but ended up with Reisen instead. This time I'm working with Magic Sculp, an epoxy clay that cures in 24 hours and it easy to work with and can be sanded and cut afterwards.
So far I'm just working with the lower body, but the legs are done soon so I can move on to the torso. I think it will turn out pretty nice! At least if I manage to do the hair and skirt, which will be the hardest parts.
-
Man, sculpting is not my thing. The most i ever do is play around with salt dough and paint it with acrylics. That already looks leagues above what I am capable of. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
-
It's an exciting experiment, but this material is even more versatile than the clay I used before, so I'm hoping for even better results. Legs/panties finalized, now working on the torso.
Some sketches of Sakuya for my comic, As you can see, I'm going with the "vampire hunter" like approach for her introduction. But I will keep it very open and rather vague, and she will never talk about her past once she's become the maid.
-
...Frog??
Sakuya with her braids back is interesting. I think it's kind of hard to place it as her though, the texture of her hair looks so much different.
-
The frog is unrelated. It should be obvious that it's her in the comic, so I think it's ok. As an assassin, you don't want hair and stuff hanging in your face, so I tucked it back.
First preview page from my coming comic about Patchouli Knowledge's life and back story (in my version)! It WILL be finished, printed and delivered by early June, else the gods may strike me down.
I'll post a few more samples eventually, as they are finished.
-
Just one page of a preview shouldn't intrigue me so much, and yet here we are.
-
I love the way you draw eyes especially Sakura's ones! Can't wait to see more of the comic itself.
-
Take my money.
-
Thank yous :3
Here's another page, the first view of a certain house.
-
I saw someone suggesting the hugging zombie in another thread, and it sounded like fun, so I nicked the idea.
She'll love you to death!
-
XD @ Yukari's solution
-
A fateful first meeting! Patricia used Magic Shield! It wasn't super effective!
I'll probably drop one or two preview pages more later.
-
FUCK. Remi knows Power Word: Kill!? With her +8 LA for being a vampire, she'd have to be at least level 25! (http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/6798/1093x.gif)
-
Remi is super-leveled, but being legally dead herself is cheating. Actually, it says KFZZZT, though, as she hits the magic shield. I guess I need to tweak that font, you're the second one who reads it as KILL.
-

She'll love you to death!
The "Free Hugs" is a nice touch. :3
Oh, and, do you mind if I use this for practicing my digital coloring?
-
Go ahead, just link back to me if you post it somewhere.
Edit:
The first version cover for the book! I'll do one or two more and see if I can come up with something more interesting. This was fun to paint, anyway, and good practice.
-
Nice odango-hat, Patchurry.
-
Some rough concept sketches for Flandre and Yukari.
-
Some rough thumbnails of additional cover layouts, and more progress on Reisen. I've started to file and build up her skirt to something more resembling a skirt.
-
Yay more sketches!
Goodness gracious, just how do you juggle all these projects, Rags?
-
The model is just something I can file on for 10 minutes every now and then, or spend an occasional hour on building more on.. so it's rather slow progress, but at least it's something.
A full comic page takes around 5 hours to draw and ink(which means 8-9 hours in ineffective work time), so after that I have time for other things.
Sketching on the second version cover now(first in the thumbnails), I'll post when there is some progress.
-
Some updates on Reisen. The rough work on the skirt is almost done, but still a lot of fine tuning to do. Torso got some additional details.
-
Some more sketches from a meeting.
Sorry for triple posting, but nobody's saying anything, so deal with it.
-
Nue with freckles? Intriguing.
Although it would take forever, I'd kind of like to see you draw every touhou eventually just to see what kinds of unusual personal touches you put on them. It's interesting to look at.
-
It would be fun. And take forever. My appreciation for Remilia has grown quite a bit during the work on this comic... she's always fun to draw, much more so than Patchouli...
Starting to get somewhere on the model! The skirt is done, except for a few final touchups, torso is pretty much done, the arms need some more work to fit to the body, and hands, and I'm working on the head. I did try to do a more anime-ish head, but it turned out this way... well, it's fine too. It's not finished, but the basis turned out alright, I think.
The final big challenge will be the hair. I have some ideas about how to do it, so I hope it turns out alright.
Also, another preview page from my comic. Here Remilia is telling Patchouli about an event from her and Flandre's past. They've been through a lot.
-
Awww, Flandre. :[
-
She hasn't got it easy.
Some more sketches for Yukari's dress for the comic. Now I've decided that she comes to the Scarlet Mansion in 1918, to propose the relocation to Gensokyo, so I adjusted her clothing to the fashion of the time. She's meant to look a little "unnatural"; not quite human, but more like someone or something in the guise of a human.
-
No..?
Have a full page, then. In which "Lady Violet" is explaining her standpoint.
-
Oh god that Yukari Yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssss!
-
Oh god that Yukari Yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssss!
-
Oh god that Yukari Yeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssss!

Glad you like it :3
Was drawing with some friends today, did a quick Parsee.
-
Well, alright, here goes one last last page. Actually the second to last in the comic, when the SDM has landed in Gensoukyou, and Patchouli goes out to see where they are. She is greeted by a native, but there are some language difficulties. I got help from a friend with the text, and here's the transcript and translation:
Ohayo~~
Shinirine? Gensoukyou ni youkoso! Atashi wa Shameimaru Aya. Tengukyoukaikaiin toshite koko no juumintachi ni kawatte kanngeisuruwa. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
Ara? Odokashichatta? Gomenne.
Ara, ikokujin? Ja, are wa muyou kana?
Ma, iiya, agechae!
-------------------
Good mooorning!
Newcomers? Welcome to Gensokyo! I'm Shameimaru Aya. As a member of the Tengu association, I'd like to extend our greetings. We hope for your mutual respect.
Ah, did I scare you? I'm sorry.
Oh, a foreigner? Then maybe this is no use..?
Well, I'll give it out anyway.
-
I love that Aya. Traditional Genso Reporter! :V
-
Thank you. Yes, it's only 1918 here, so she couldn't wear a modern shirt/skirt combo. There isn't any traditional art with female Tengu, as far as I can see, but a straight kimono would be too cumbersome for her, so I made something that looks pretty much like traditional (male) Tengu wear, but a bit more skirt-like. Her belt holds her notebook and a pen/brush, a bag for newspapers/various things, and a sake gourd, of course.
-
Finally I had the time to finish this! It's been sitting around for months, and I've been working on it to and fro'.
Tried out something new with the technique, which was very interesting and quite time consuming. But I might want to keep polishing this style.
-
Holy crap. That tree is just amazing~
-
Thank you~ It sure took some time.
Did a speedpaint of everone's favourite zombie to try out some new brushes in SAI. Pretty interesting. Around 40 minutes.
-
Yoshika looks so adorable and huggable without being moeblobby.
Also, dat ofuda.
-
All her blobbiness has rotted away. Thank you.
Here's the back cover illo for the book. I'm preparing the last stuff before the print now, so I'm done very soon... only 2 weeks too late.
-
Classy as fuck.
-
The "Free Hugs" is a nice touch. :3
I'm really late but I just noticed what it says when she's, erm... "hugging" Sanae. GLEE 'JUGS
-
Indeed! It's been a long time, and now I'm studying, so I don't have a lot of time for drawing, but I have some ideas I want to do.
Let's start with a Satori.
Talk to the eye, cuz the heart ain't listening any more!
-
late to the party but hello there!
where can i read your comic? :v flan looks so adorable!! and i love your style!
-
Thank you! You can read my comic if you buy it! Then you can read it at home or wherever you want. But right now it's a bit inconvenient, since I'm in Japan for 6 months... But maybe the shipping from here wouldn't be more than from Sweden anyway.
Also since I'm here, I can now post on 2chan, so I drew this on the oekaki board. I'm not really very fond of the Paint BBS version the Japanese seem to love, I prefer Shi Painter... But it's usable, even if the tools are a bit more inconvenient.
"I... won't... laugh!"
-
Saw this on your deviantart, made me lol quite hard. Nice work!
-
Thank you!
Pariya and Parsee, two extreme tsundere darlings!
If you don't know about Pariya, you need to go out and buy Kaoru Mori's "The Bride's Stories" right now. You need to do it in any case, because Mori is one of the best comic artists on this planet right now.
-
Oooh, I love their respective headwear.
-
That crazy old cat/fox lady again.
-
Looking wickedly cool there, Ms. Yakumo.
And fine lighting there!
-
Thank you!

Fuck, this is great. I really love middle eastern/oriental stuff.
-
Dat Yukari.
Just wondering, how much are you charging for your Patchy comic? I kind of really want to read it.
-
Thank yous.
Vyrien: It will be $10+shipping. I can send one if I have any left after Comiket(we'll see if I hand out/exchange any there).
And speaking of Comiket, it's this weekend, and since I won't be selling anything, at least I want to have something home-made with me. So I painted this t-shirt:
-
Man, this thread sure sinks fast. Sorry I'm not drawing more moeblobs, people.
Here comes another non-blobby one, the tiger that loves to screw you over.
Vyrien: I sent one out to another guy, and the postage is $12 from here (to America), so $22 in total.
-
Oooh! Shou!
Are you drawing these on an oekaki? Because they are really great.
Also, I live in the UK, so I imagine the postage will be a tad more expensive from Japan, if you can find out, that'd be great, I do want to buy one.
-
Thank you! Yeah, these last few were drawn on 2chan's oekaki board.
I'll see if I can find out anything about the cost.
-
Wow, non passive Shou! Such a rarity oq o
-
Man, this thread sure sinks fast. Sorry I'm not drawing more moeblobs, people.
Know what's more popular than moeblobs? Boobs. Now go forth and conquer.
I really like how your style lends itself to expressions quite nicely (love the super rage Satori). And your Yoshikas are pretty freaking awesome. ~w~
With your comic, did you draw the pages out and then scan them, or is it all done on the computer?
-
Pasu: Shou might be a kind and quiet soul, but to me, she's a raging beast(those damn lasers).
Red Frost: I'm afraid the booby toehos I draw will be a bit much for this forum. Maybe some normal cheesecake some time.
My style and expressions comes largely from southerners like Xavier Houssain (http://xa-xa-xa.deviantart.com) and Alessandro Barbucci (http://alessandrobarbucci.blogspot.com), mixed with all sorts of manga.
I usually draw all my comics on paper and scan, I like working on paper. But almost all my illustrations are pure digital.

Ahhh, okay. I've always wanted to learn more about the process of making comics/doujinshi, but I always figured it was more than typing "How to make doujinshi" in google. When I was younger I used to believe it was purely traditional up until the mass-printing, but I couldn't understand how they got the intricate patterns used for shading and coloring and such clean-looking lineart. Then I learned about technology and started to think that had something to do with it. :derp:
-
All-traditional is still very common in Japan, what with screentones and stuff. Digital is coming on strong nowadays, though, of course. Most illustrators probably work all digital, but I feel that traditional paper and ink still is what comic artists use most.
A request from /jp/, Reisen in an Evangelion-style plugsuit.
-
Some recent Battle Lolis.
I bought "Symposium of Post-Mysticism" yesterday, and it's very nice. I won't be able to read it in a million years, but thankfully the wiki provides a translation. It contains info about all the new characters since MoF, and some quite interesting dialogue between Marisa, Kanako, Byakuren and Toyosatomimi no Miko. I didn't think much of most of the TD characters before, but when reading Mononobe no Futo's entry, I sort of fell for her. Turns out she not only betrayed her ally and made her become a ghost, her hobbies(and spellcards) includes burning Buddhist temples and statues in the name of immortal Taoism. I like my girls batshit insane, thank you very much.
Yuk/Yuyu was drawn for "Spirit Day", some kind of gay bullying awareness day connected to the color purple. So why not have Miss Violet herself deliver some gay ol' spirit lovin'?
-
YES. Futo is the best Ten Desires. The lighting in that picture is fantastic by the way.
That Yu x Yu pic is a little too, uh, let's say "enjoyable" to be used for activism purposes, don't you think? :V
-
Diggin' that Aya. And I haven't played 10D to tell, is Futo's background a reference to the kind of danmaku she uses?
-

Digital inking just never has the same charm.
-
Thank yous~
Stuffman: It's pro-gay rights, so I think it's alright. Also, they're 1000+ years old and does not have to give any fucks. ...or maybe they will? uhuhuh
Hatate: Yes, her most intense cards are described as "Futo summons a temple and proceeds to burn it. Watch out for the falling embers!" So yeah. Gal is wack.
Kinoko: True dat.
-
I'm kinda sorta working on an oRin illustration book. I've applied for Winter Comiket, and if I get in(update: I got in! Time to work.), I'll do my best to make it a reality. If not... maybe some other time. This is the first finished illustration. I was inspired by the Arreat levels from Diablo 3 for this, and I wanted to try to paint something similar. It might not be perfect light-wise, but this is the best I can do now, and I'm still happy with how it looks. The main focus is supposed to be the environment.
-
Congrats on getting into winter comi! :3
-
Yay! Right, so I'll be at Winterket, second day, east hall 3 キ-18b! I managed to finish the book just yesterday, and it's been sent off to print now...
It's 11 pages of new illustrations of Orin(and friends) in full color.
Here are some examples + the lava cave picture above.
-
Rin, don't steal Yoshika's body! Seiga needs that!
More cute hell cats are always appreciated :)
-
Love the way you draw scenery, Ragathol O_O You have a dA? Oh, and what learning resources did you use to get that good?
-
Thank you! My devart is at http://ragathol.deviantart.com (http://ragathol.deviantart.com).
I've been drawing a lot of croquis, attended various comic artist schools, done a few comic books and generally been drawing almost every day the last ten years.
-
It was nice meeting you at Winter Comiket! I meant to go back and give you a copy of our second book, which was in full color and all, but I got so wrapped up in requests and running my own circle I completely forgot. I just finished reading the Patchouli comic you gave me and it was really good! There were a few things that seemed a little shoehorned into it but overall it was a pretty convincing back story. Nice touches with the different languages too, although I think the Japanese needed a little work. Still, I really like how you drew Remilia and Patchouli's slow transition over time was superb.
-
Thank you very much! Yeah, I'm not 100% satisfied with it myself, and I'm not really used to write more serious drama, so it's a little so-so at times. But it mostly works, I think.
I got the Japanese (quick) translation from a friend who works as a translator, but he's not a native, and I couldn't get it "touhouified", so it might be a bit off.
I had fun drawing slightly different outfits for Remilia for every scene, and the way Patchy's clothes, hat and hair slowly settles towards the current appearance. I had wanted to include Meiling as well, but it'd just be too long, and ending it when they came to Gensokyou seemed right too. Regrettably, the ending feels a bit cut off. I still need to plan my stories better beforehand, instead of just writing them on the go.
But I'm glad you liked it!
-
We had our first snow here in Tokyo today...
Also my first time drawing Letty, so it seemed proper.
-
Oh my, been a while! I haven't done a lot of illustrations since last time, but I made a new comic book and attended Reitaisai, so there's that...
Sadly I'll go back home just ten days before comiket, but it'll be nice to come home too. I still love Tokyo, but life in Japan is starting to wear me out a bit.
Oh, and I also met Nforza randomly at a small event the other day, so that was fun. Hello.
Even though no one really care much, have some pictures!
And here are the first 6 pages of the new comic, which features a lot of bullshit from Cirno and a lot of trolling from Aya: http://imgur.com/a/yBcAu (http://imgur.com/a/yBcAu)
-
dat style
-
wow.
-
"Jeepers! I'm a fairy!"
You write the best lines.
-
I have to say, I really enjoyed your new Cirno comic. The story was fun and the art was a lot more solid than the Scarlet Devil Legends one with Marisa in it.
-
Thank yous~
Inigo Montoya: Glad you like it! I think there are some good parts and some weak parts, but my stories are always a bit random. The art is certainly a few notches higher, though. It was fun to make, but rather exhausting.
-
Long time, no see, as usual. No more toehoes since last time, but I'll post a bunch of sketches from my own fantasy comic project. It's mostly just character designs so far, but I want to create a "touhou-like" world, with a lot of (cuteified) monsters running around etc.

No? Have a painted one, then. This is the little "Al", Hiyallala Yallayalla, an Armenian monster that can go invisible, thanks to its magic hat.
She has teeth of iron, nails of brass and one burning eye.

Oh right, I do have two Touhou pictures, the ones I made for the scroll that was handed to ZUN at some convention recently. I did Orin and Parsee.

Oh shit I didn't see that last update. Those character designs are rad as fuck. I really like the witch and the three-head girl. Do you have a blog or website or something where you regularly post updates? I'd like to follow development on that comic when you move forward with it.
That Orin is fantastic. I am really envious of your ability to use color and actually draw backgrounds :V
-
Thank you very much! I have deviantart, but I can't say I post all too regularly, sadly. http://ragathol.deviantart.com/ (http://ragathol.deviantart.com/)
I'm going to talk with some friends soon who might want to help me write it, so I hope I can get something going sooner or later.
Here's a WIP for another monster, the Greek "Aeternae", Nilli Pyroklaster. Her razor-sharp horns can pierce shields and armour.
I'm not really happy with this picture and composition though, so I'll probably remake it.

Your versatility is very impressive. You have all the tools: anatomy, environments, texture, color, detail, storytelling. What I respect most is how you have a wide range of character proportions and expressions, while still having each individual character look consistent with himself/herself from picture to picture. I wouldn't be surprised if you're the artist on this forum who has done the most number of comic pages.
I'm actually more impressed by your "Fantasy RPG World" designs than your Toho fan art, probably because of my stylistic preference when it comes to Toho. But all of your work is very good and shows a great deal of skill and effort. You're like a manga-influenced Tony DiTerlizzi.
-
Thank you very much! All included, I've probably done around 800 comic pages, which of course is a great way to learn what you have to learn. In a comic, you have to include all those parts, and I try to not back down from a challenge.
I didn't know about Tony DiTerlizzi before, but Google shows me some pretty dang neat pictures, so I'm delighted by that comparison.

Yukari being awake in the winter is pretty rare. Inspired by Futon's (http://utubuse.suppa.jp/frame.htm) work. I think his pictures are very beautiful, I love that darker side of Gensokyo.

Shit man. Backgrounds too stronk.
How long does it take you to draw a scene like that? Does it ever get easier? ;_;
-
That picture took almost exactly 4 hours in total. Things do get a lot faster with experience. 10 years ago, a single character illo often took 5-6 hours or more.
-
Looks cool, but is something wrong with her state of mind? She looks insane.
-
That's normal when the artist is Raga. :V
-
I was talking about the first picture on the thread.

That was three years ago. Quote it if you're talking about it.

Utsuho is quite insane, yes. She was force-fed a sun god and started making nukes in her basement. Could tip the cutest bird over the edge.

Heyo!
Reitaisai went well again, sold almost all I had (that is, 15-25 of each book) and it was great fun. Managed to get hold of most of what I wanted too, so that was a success. My books had been translated into Japanese this time around, so that was probably a good thing too. Those small tables are starting to get too packed for this, though, I'll have to think of another solution for next time, since I plan to make more books. Comparison of tables from Reitaisai(top) and the Swedish Comics Festival in Stockholm the weekend after:

Some examples from my new book for this year, Youkai Monochrome. It's just a small art book with 12 pages, since I didn't have time for anything else, but I quite like how it came out.

But for next time there'll be a new comic for sure, I already have the synopsis down and I'm writing the storyboard/script now. It'll be a continuation of Parsee's story in RGB, but with the heroine's continued adventures; that is, a retelling of SA in my style. I did some character sketches inspired by Nisekoi. I'm writing the pages with Satori now, and she's absolutely terrible (and therefore good fun). I'm trying to make her more like the mythical Satori, driving people mad.

Owo Is this the artist that made the nsfw SDM train picture? Haha! You're fucking awesome!
-
I could have made something to that extent, yes. Thank you.
What is everyone's opinion on Touhou ero, btw? Fuck yeah, or a disgrace to ZUN and the Emperor?
Got some new stuff going on. I'll try for Reitaisai next year again, so I need something new. This time it's my own version of the SA story, with everyone at once and somewhat different progression (or just "behind the scenes" of what we didn't see ingame?)
It's sort of a continuation from Parsee's story in RGB, so it's starting from stage 4.
Have a bunch of sample pages for now! Still writing and drawing, it's going to be long, probably around 60 pages.

Hey Raga, how do you usually go about writing and completing a script? Do you have any tips or advice for newbies?
-
Mea: Thanks!
Aoshi: It's pretty much the classical way - start by coming up with a basic idea, like what should happen in large and where should it go. Toss and turn ideas in your head and/or on paper for some time, until something solid starts materializing, and you know where to start. For this comic I had two ideas I wanted to do that just happened to play out in an SA context, so I decided to combine them and start building a story to support them both - and I concluded they would both fit in a personal retelling of the SA story.
When you have an idea, I usually just start drawing the dummy pages/storyboard with the panel layouts and dialogue directly. Some like to write the whole script dialogue in text only first, and then split it into pages and panels, but I usually just write as I go along. If I come up with something that should be further ahead in the story, I write it down as I envision it, sometimes with picture support, and then include it when the time comes. Others may have systems of post-its with various scenes and ideas that can be rearranged if needed, or other ways of organizing the story. I usually just keeps most of it in my head, and keep iterating it to see if it holds, or if I come up with something better.
The storyboards/dummy pages are small and simple arrangements of the page, the panel layout and their content, that can be easily changed or swapped before drawing the real page. Some people just start inking from their head, but I like to write out the script and the layout so that I can read it a few times and make sure that everything fits together, polish the dialogue and character/speech balloon positions etc.
Then it's time to put it all on the real, fancy paper and draw the proper lines and ink and all that. After that, I scan the pages and tone and text them in Photoshop, and it's done.
I don't know if my way is the best, but it works for me. I start working before the whole script/storyboard is finished because I'm impatient, and I'm generally just a few pages ahead in the script, but as long as I know where I'm heading, it usually works out. Without experience, you may find that it's better to have your whole story finished before you start getting serious with the drawings, though. It's much more bothersome to change or dump a finished page than a sloppy sketch.
Here's one storyboard page from a bit further ahead, with some changes in dialogue and text order made. It's very quick, just to get an overview. And with atrocious handwriting. Did that answer anything?

Yes, thanks! I'm not very good at scripting so I thought I should ask someone who's more experienced.
-
As someone who's also inexperienced yet interested in scripting/story telling via comic/manga format, your advise is quite helpful. Thanks!
It'd be interesting if we could arrange a casual 'write one sentence, pass it off' sort of deal. Except in a simple comic page format.

Are you referring to an exquisite corpse/comic jam?
It would be pretty fun to do, if we ever get some activity going around the Atelier again.

Well, possibly. I was thinking one whole page per person so that the 'thought' would at least be complete. A whole page could potentially prove to be too much for some, in which case an exquisite corpse-style may work better.
-
Glad I could help.
I participated in some of those things once, but you have to have an active community, or it'll die out fast. The old Megatokyo forums had some good ones back in the day.

Finished the script today! It'll be 66 pages.
Just one panel from a page. Leaving the Palace of the Earth Spirits, and going down to Hell for real.

Congrats on finishing! Now then, any chance the new book will be available for online ordering, or izzit a Reitaisai-exclusive for now?

Thanks! I'll print it in English as well, of course, so just drop me a mail if you want to buy it (after May).

Shit is getting real. Don't mess with the sun.
What is also real is that I'm accepted to both Reitaisai in Tokyo in May and Touhoucon in Anaheim, CA in September! That will be my first visit to the US, so I'm really excited. Hope to see someone there! (if anyone's actually reading this)

I'll just keep dumping stuff here, then.
The cover for the book, and some "page 2 girls" (already passed enemies). This was the first time I drew Kisume and Yamame, they weren't too bad.

I don't really know jack-shit about cartoon/comic-styles, but your stuff has a lot of character. I like how you shape some characters a little bit so they have something unique to your idea, like Okuus nose and disfigured arm or Yuugis hair.
