So it appears that TD wasn't exactly sweeping the scene, if the results from question 7 are any indication, though being the newest game it would have to deal with the other games (the older ones in particular) already being so well established within the community. It's amazing how similar the rankings for some of the games are across all three categories, however - PCB is at 1st or 2nd, SA at 5th, TD at 7th, GFW at 11th or 12th, you get the idea.

Boy Kasen has a BIG position shift...the 3nd largest shift is by 9 position (Murasa down, Momiji up), 2nd is 12 (Nazrin down)...Kasen got shifted up by 36 position!

Seriously, what caused that? I don't think I've seen that kind of spike before (other than new characters at least)...

It's because her role in WaHH is actually interesting now (there were only four chapters released before last year's contest) and her fanworks have plentifully increased since then, as more people have gotten around to reading it. She's become as much of a key character with the Hakurei Shrine as Suika previously was, and has held more spotlight over a long period of time than most characters have ever had. It isn't all that surprising.

I don't think their manga is as gag-y as Inaba of Moon/Earth (which is damn funny and a lot better than many doujins), but you have a point...but I do love the 3 though...they're probably one of my most liked characters in Touhou...

I was expecting Yoshika to get into the forties, at least. I mean, she's in two stages, makes a great gag character, and has a somewhat interesting ability. Also the zombie.

The Inaba manga was cuter and funnier. It was also based off of popular characters, while the Fairies one was based off of originals.

The Three Fairies are mainly a literary device used to explore Gensokyo in an entertaining way without there being any need for an underlying plot or reason behind anything written (moreso than usual). It's largely an "Interesting-Thing-about-Gensokyo-of-the-Day!" sort of thing.

Lunatic clears are still really low but I suppose that the majority of the players who voted doesn't really play the games. That would be the only reasonable explanation for having over 3000 people unable to clear SA/UFO Easy. The results of question 7 shows that not only is UFO too low but its also below TD.

But that is obviously because TD is new and gets a few easy points that way. I hope. For the music portion, I'm pleased to see the appreciation that MoF gets. A lot better than the two right below it. I would've expected UFO to be a bit higher though but music taste and all that. Characters; Disapproved.

Music: How does Septette and UN Owen manage to maintain that popularity? I don't get it, doesn't people ever get tired of them? They aren't bad songs but come on!!

While Sanae being 11 fills me with happiness, I can't stop remembering she was second two years ago, a.k.a. the very best after Reimu. Can't get greedy, I guess :V.

Hurr... Reimu 1 standard, Youmu  8, Yuyuko  13, Patch  17, China  21, Byakuren 23, Suwako 24, Udonge 27, Kogasa 34, Miko 41. Were it not for 53 Chen and 67 Wriggle it would be perfect  :derp:. At least Futo's 19, lovely. SDM and their themes should be a bit lower, but this is the power of 1st windows game, I guess.

- Septette is a meh song and doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the Top 20, never mind perennially first place.
- U.N. Owen is a bit better as a song but still doesn't belong in the Top 20.
- I wouldn't have picked Cosmic Mind at #3 but it's a quality song and is far better than everything in its immediate vicinity, so I'm okay with this.
- Bloom Nobly Blah Blah Blah is a decent song and I can see why it'd be popular but it never got more than an appreciative nod from me. Would prefer to see it lower.
- Gensokyo Gods Loved gets the exact same assessment.
- Third Eye is a quality song that I enjoy a good deal but I will forever have a small distaste for it for overshadowing the vastly superior Heartfelt Fancy.
- Necrofantashit is not music and did not deserve the dignity of even appearing in this poll in the first place. Next.
- Nuclear Fusion I'm fine with. Ended up picking Heartfelt Fancy at 7 over it but it would have cracked my Top 10 had the field expanded slightly.
- Immortal Smoke is a quality song. Would not have picked it 9th, but no major grievances.
- Hartmann is exactly two iotas better than Necrofantashit. The fact that these two "songs" are perennially popular makes me lose more faith in the Touhou fanbase than anything else. The concepts of primaries and secondaries, yukkuris, YouTube and Twitter RP accounts, the tidal wave of memetics, people claiming Heian Alien is a U.N. Owen remix, and even the Mima fanbase are all tolerable in comparison to the idea that these two fetid piles of compost were ever brought to creation.
- Phantom Ensemble gets the same assessment as Immortal Smoke.
- Chinese Tea is a quality choice. EoSD's best song, and it's not even all that close.
- Native Faith is a quality choice. Always been a tossup between it and Fall of Fall for best MoF track.
- Broken Moon always makes me giggle for have a two-character name. Decent song, better than Septette and U.N. Owen, but not quite Top 20. Kinda like Bloom Nobly, I guess. Tends to get really nice remixes, though, I'll give it that.
- Desire Drive I'm okay with just because it's new and already placed this well. Liked it enough as a song regardless.
- Would not have put Last Remote this high, but it's a good song that deserves to be about 500 spots above Hartmann instead of 6 below it.
- Transient Human Being I have nothing against. Not a Top 20, but still a good song.
- I can't judge Magus Light because I suck so much at GFW that I haven't actually unlocked Extra yet.
- True Adminstrator was my personal favorite by a good margin coming out of XD so I'm glad it did this well.
- History of the Moon is bleh. Everything about Septette applies here, except it's not even as good as Septette.

This assessment is probably going to piss off a lot of people but they can all take solace in the fact that none of my seven picks appeared in the top 20, so clearly my taste in music is inferior to theirs.

Not really piss off. More like question. Sure, he has his own opinions but backs none of them. I wouldn't mind people bashing Septette for example if they explained actually why exactly it is bad/horrible for them. For example he says: "Native Faith is quality choice". My question -> Why? (Not why as is, OMGNATIVEFAITHSUCKS but 'why' as in why this song is quality. What makes it quality? The melody? The feeling?

Ranting about subjective things is fine if their rant is actually backed up with some personal arguments. Hence I hate to express opinions about which song is best/worse. Because comparing such things is just plain useless. Though he is right, often such rants will piss off people quickly. Which is sad amusement.

Comments :
- Characters with the higher % of 1st place votes tend to have the better ranking in the popularity contest with the strong exception of Rinnosuke, Cirno and possibly Meiling. They have the most dedicated fan base making most of their points, but not a lot of 2nd+ place vote meaning they are only attractive to a certain type of the touhou fans. I can see why it would be the case with Rinnosuke (the only real male character) and Cirno (baka ⑨ hype) but not with Meiling.
- On the opposite, some characters have an high popularity ranking compared to their low % of 1st place votes. That means they are liked by a lot of the touhou fans but not enough to be their favorite character. It's understandable for Futo, because 10D is a relatively new game. Depending on how Futo's character is developped by future doujin works she could reach the top 10 next year. I don't know how to comment for Kasen, it seems she lost a good part of her fan base from the previous year but she got far more 2nd+ place votes. If she doesn't secure a fan base for the next year she might go back to the depth of the popularity poll.

I think it's as some others have said. A lot of the fanbase doesn't even play the games, and some are probably just gonna play the games with their favorite characters in them and choose those as their favorite, without having much of a concept of what gamplay should be like.
And people who care about nothing but gameplay probably aren't aware of the poll in the first place.

I personally voted for IN because I liked the slave system. I'm not sure what you're constituting as gameplay, but that was the major factor for me- being able to directly manipulate the attacks sent at you.

What did I put after that? I think, PCB for the simple "Dodging and shooting"  design that makes SA and  EoSD good and a much better invincibility system than TD, and PoFV because it's just plain fun.

I didn't consider the fighters but I'd probably put Soku over PCB if I did.

Since the music section doesn't keep track of first-place votes, I need to be a bit cautious regarding my comments of song positions.

- I'm sure Helepolis has heard enough from us about Septette being first every year, so I won't add on to that. :V
- Nuclear Fusion is at least remaining steady. Nice to see that it still holds its own among the other final boss themes that top the list.
- I don't think I'll ever understand what people see in Phantom Ensemble. I mean, I don't hate it, but it just doesn't seem dynamic enough to be that close to the top ten.
- People think that highly of True Administrator, eh? I've mentioned before that this song sounded pretty underwhelming since the beginning for me, especially compared to most other Windows final boss themes. Obviously True Administrator isn't the highest on that list, but only like four other themes beat it out, whereas I would place it near the bottom (it's kind of a toss up between this and Great Fairy Wars for that spot).
- Well, at least Desire Drive ranked higher than True Administrator among the TD songs. But how is A Small Desire's Starry Sky among the lowest of those...

I'm not sure what to think about the lists being so similar to each other.

A sign that some of the games have very consistent quality overall? Although I would still put SA higher than 5th (naturally :V).
