People on IRC managed to convince me to wait on getting this, but it does look interesting. I'll probably get it once the hype goes down a bit.
I really wish people would stop with the "stuff happens in a graveyard, so Mima is coming back!" crap, but I guess there's no harm in hypothesizing.
I'm going to try to keep myself from spoiling myself past the two new characters thus far, but if people decide to bring them into fanfiction or RPs or whatever, I guess there's nothing I can do.

Since a lot of people are going to be following along here, and not everyone appreciates the final boss' identity (or the entire game beyond stage 3, really) being spoiled before they encounter it.

The cover was posted while I was asleep, so this was definitely a pleasant surprise to wake up to. :3
My first impression was one of the Prismriver, sensible or not. Of course, after thinking about it a little, I came to the obvious conclusion: it's actually the Five Magic Stones disguised as one of the Prismriver sisters!
Or maybe it's, you know, some new character as per usual. :D

Since the final version of Shinreibyou was sent in, it's been an outrageous dance of moving and other such personal matters. But, one way or another, the end result has arrived.
It's a, hm... a calm CD jacket, yes. This is one of the ones that will be sold tomorrow, so my regards.
Touhou Shinreibyou costs 1000 yen, so, please make sure you have a 1000-yen bill prepared.
Oh, boy... I'm guessing the physical labor involved in packing will probably leave me collapsed before things even start, but here's to tomorrow anyway.

Also, just in case people aren't seeing it, the background of the jacket sort of obscures what looks like either another oni-esque horn or another part of a bow. I know, I thought it was a wizardly hat at first too, which would have totally made it either Mima or Layla Prismriver.

My first thought was Layla, as that which she is holding could easily be part of some instrument, too.

Marisa being the Extra Boss in Great Fairy Wars was kind of a spoiler. But I don't see why mentioning the name of a new character is spoiler material.

There isn't much to spoil, but I'd really like to enter stages and see new characters for the first time inside of the game, not on screenshots or other places. That means no Pixiv or anything until next month, already got signatures and avatars blocked here, so may god have mercy on the fool who randomly throws screenshots or pictures into achievement threads or anywhere else you wouldn't expect them.

Just because there is not much to spoil doesn't mean that the little to spoil that there is should be allowed to spoil. For instance, the Yuyuko battle is much more awesome for the first time if you don't know of the battle's grand finale. :derp:
Then again, I am probably going to do it like the previous years and try to avoid everything until I have unlocked extra and reached the boss by myself. After that, I don't think there will be anything that could be spoiled anymore.

I play Touhou as a puzzle shooter, not as a scorerunner or for some achievement-oriented play.
I want to see the patterns for myself, decipher their natures, then find the best way to go about handling them. The satisfaction that results is immense.
As such, I would really hate it if the patterns were to be spoiled.

The spoiler issue will be handled by having 2 threads, 1 for general discussion (this one) and 2 for actual info (article thread with spoilers)
But we'll have to see how to exactly fit that. For now, nothing is known yet and so we can just either speculate on the cover picture or discuss random things.

The first three stages required little to no memorization. If that trend carries over to the full game then I don't think there is anything to worry about. It shall be nice for extra though. Suwako and Koishi has some trial n' error stuff that would be nice to have an opportunity to memorize effectively.

Looking at the cover art, I think it's either a yama or an oni. She seems to be holding a yama stick and a judgment scale. There also seems to be a sword hung around her hips. I think some yama have horns. It could also be the third oni deva, wielding a couple of weapons. Or it's an instrument, like a big violin. Layla perhaps?
I have a feeling this would be the extra boss instead of final boss. A yama trying to put a stop to these necromantic shenanigans but arriving a bit too late. Or it's the phantasm boss. There could still be a chance for Mimerz or Layla to pop up.
I'm still hoping that the final boss is a revived Qin Shi Huang, the first Chinese emperor, with his terracotta army as stage enemies. Would explain why Yoshika, a jiang shi of all things, appeared in this game. Likely Qin Shi Huang will be turned into a loli ghost, but it'd be really cool if ZUN made him male. Even cooler if instead of a pretty boy it's a freaky undead skeleton or lich. It'd certainly be something different.

I think that the spell practice is there so you can enjoy the spellcards without the Trance.

After game2011 pointed out something on the silhouette, I took another look. At the time, I was on my phone, and tilting it, I could see something like a scythe the character was holding.
Could this possibly mean we'll get a reaper that can actually reap?

It could be Kyouko, since that "wavy scythe"-thing is actually part of the cover. It's wayyy to big to be a weapon... (unless ZUN is now going to give all his new touhous ridiculously large weapons. Memes ahoy!)
Oh, and will there be Last Words? I kinda just realized that there weren't any Last Spells in the demo, unlike IN.

To be honest, I don't really think the Final/Extra boss is going to be Kyouko (unless it's a Moriya Shrine Myoren Temple conspiracy) but for the meantime Rika, Alice, and Kogasa say hi.

Actually, there is something visible that could be a horn, and depending on perspective it would even be in the correct position. The cloths wouldn't match at all, though, not even counting the whole no-lower-body thing. Then again, Yuka and Alice both looked way different in their reappearances. Then again then again, there is no reason to assume ZUN is going to bring any characters back except for wishful thinking. :P

Okay then. I'd like to know which patterns in Stage 4, 5 and 6 require memorization? In IN that is. The only one springing to mind is Hourai Jewel. If he makes another one of those however, I'll book passage on a plane to Japan and knock his bloody head off. :V

Naw, Suika is just ZUN's drinking mate, along with Yuugi.
Also, Mima will appear as stage 6's boss, but will be pile drived by the final and extra stage(Not Phantasm) final bosses, effectively wiping her from existance. The actual final boss will then appear.

On another note, is anyone else sensing from this that the final boss described in the prologue actually sounds...evil? That's a very rare thing in Touhou, and I can't help but wonder who it is now and what their goal is...guess we'll find out soon enough though.

The playthrough for this boss is really simple. He has pretty high HP, and you'll take a lot of damage trying to fight him head on. The trick is to go in strong, back off and recoup, and then keep coming back. Also helps to eat some mozzarella sticks.

I would love for it if ZUN took some pointers from western indie studios and offer download versions for purchase, but it's understandable that he just keeps with a few burned copies on discs distributed in a few venues only. Even if he doesn't do that it would be really nice for him to arrange deals with others to burn and sell the discs, especially in the market outside Japan...I will attribute his not doing either to artistic vs. monetary intent (understandable) and smug Japanese island syndrome </nationalism>.

Apparently the number of picies you need for lives increases after each life. First 8, then 10, then 15 and so on.
Yes. That was the case with the demo too except higher numbers. I'm interested in seeing how many lives I can get out of the entire game. Probably somewhere around MoF/EoSD level. Which would be a good thing for those looking for a challenge in their 1cc's outside of scoring and performing well.

Funny thing, I saw someone capture the overdrive of that spellcard without even moving. Though apparently you have to be lucky for that to work.

For TH14 it may be necessary to hand out bans for rage over supposed Mima red herrings during the first week or so after release unless ZUN himself mentions her return in the lead-up. The outbursts really spoil discussion.

After messing around some more, I unlocked Kyouko's overdrive (http://imgur.com/XiADp). It seems you have to capture every single variant of the card, from easy to lunatic, to access it. Once I unlocked it, any character was able to play it.

It seems to be spell practice only. If it's accessible through Lunatic play by playing well, well I'm not good enough to do it :P

The Nico Livestreamer seemed to crash right when the survival card ended too (it was close to 0 seconds from what I remember). He was in death trance at the time so I thought that's what contributed to the fatal error rather than the card's timer ending.

Anyone feel that the stage 6 boss' final spell is the easiest of the series? I captured it on my first try on Hard, and I almost never do the same for any of the other stage 6 bosses even though I know what's coming. I did have a few close calls though. As a sidenote, the stage 5 midboss first spell card scares the shit out of me.

After looking through all the synopsese, I kind of realize something: Ten Desire is
Undefined Fantastic Object meets Imperishable Night
. Think about it: four playable characters (not teams, but close enough), Miko has the makings to be a rival to Byakuren in the same way Mokou is to Kaguya, it involves unsealing a powerful Touhou from the underworld, it uses the collect-the-thing life/bomb system, and it's got Nue.
I can't wait until all the Miko vs. Byakuren
comics come flooding out. (Or Mamizou vs. Ran
for that matter.)

Well, UFO crashed when you hit 1 billion points. There is probably going to be a patch that makes the extra stage work. I haven't gotten that far in the extra stage, only to the third last card on one try.

Okay... Now I have played this a little bit. This game is much easier than previous games...
When I die in this game, it is because I were careless - not because the pattern was hard.
I also liked the fact that every single boss seemed to have their very own gimmick
(like exploding curvy laser and fainting Yoshika... "Triple" boss battle was nice aswell
).
I also noticed that the game freezes in spellpractice when I try to select spellcards
that I haven't unlocked (doesn't always happen)...

Looks fun. I'm really digging the Stage 6 theme as well as Miko's boss theme. Hell, I'm really starting to like this cast the more I read about them. Especially Miko and Seiga.
I love how Seiga uses Yoshika as her regenerating shield in her boss fight. I laugh so damn hard every time I see it.
Perhaps Touhou 14 will have a battle between Byakuren and Miko. The story of this game (even the Extra stage) certainly seems like it's leading up to it.

From what I'm being shown in the videos, it shapes up pretty well. And Stage 6 looks as if it has been designed for a Stage 1 theme, to some oddness. It feels like playing backwards.

-Difficulty is toned down a lot. I am a normal mode player and only had 2 deaths up to and including stage 5 (and they were on the stage, not on the boss). But then 6th boss comes in and kicks my ass royally (that 2nd card, wtf!!!). I guess with more practice this game might be even easier than IN (at least on normal).
-I can't read japaneze, this is what I think the new loli's are. Stage 4 boss = a necromancer, since she revives yoshika when she is down + she uses her as her pet. Stage 5 = ghosts. Stage 6 = Kyoko's boss/mother/superior, so also one of those echo things.
-Music isn't so great as the previous games :(

However, I didn't die until I got to the double battle with Yoshi and NyanNyan. I really loved the music during that fight. Though the thunder ghost caught me by surprised and killed me. Damned zig-zaggy arrows.
Though is it me or is the last stage pretty easy up to the final boss?

Could be pretty glitchy. As stated above, extra crashes (for me too), and sometimes my screen had resolution problems. Nothing a patch and aware community can't fix.

Another one here. I have way too many derpy deaths from trying to stay near the stage one and two boss for spirit. Later on I continue doing stupid things and always forget to bomb, leading to needing a continue at stage 5, and sometimes stage 4.

Again, as has been brought up by a few people, Extra crashes for them.

I... I never liked 10D's Stage 3 theme... I unno, too calm/peppy/whatnot for me, I guess. But Stage 4's theme just totally made up for that. And the Boss theme is even more fyes.

But it was coming from Yuyuko, the great ghost princess of the netherworld, master of all things incorporeal (okay, maybe that's a bit much). So people assumed she was talking about Mima.

Got Cheat Engine in no time thanks to Mefidex's explanation of Spirit World mechanics I knew exactly what to look for... in other words, I'm now playing Ten Desires without Spirit World (And thus no computer crashing on leaving). It's a bit of a handicap but not much of one - my first time passing stage 3 I went straight to the final card of the game.
Also the stage 5 boss is so much fun. Actually all of them are. This game is just awesome now if only I can beat it properly (I should stop going for some of the later life shards, they're a little too risky)
And oh my god stage 6's theme. I love it so much.

It ended up being about as fun as I expected, I guess. The only annoying thing is how it incentives taking more risks - since I'm quite a bit unskilled, it often results in me being way too reckless, flying around everywhere trying to get points and ghosts, and crashing into everything.
Also, for whatever weird reason, I've been feeling this game is too short. No idea why, since there isn't much different from the other games.
Hoping a BGM pack gets uploaded soon/the Music Room Interface gets updated soon so I can listen to those delicious trance mixes without dying.

Are you using a fixed aspect ratio (The black bars at the side)? I always stuck to windowed mode due to the sideways stretching until I found out how to get the black bars. With them it looks pretty okay at fullscreen

Retail version allows you to continue like 10times.. and since you dont start at the beginnign of the stage, its really easy for anyone to get all spellcards in their spellcard practice.
By holy, i did all the lunatic version of the spellcards that have overdrive, this really feels like the game is much easier, even on lunatic. Doing the lunatic version of the overdrive spellcards didnt unlock overdrive though.. and extra still isnt unlocking for me ;/

Sorry for posting something not related to TD, but since I have this issue myself, I'd like to help.
If your videocard is an Intel and you have a 16:10 monitor, there's a chance fixed aspect ratio won't work, even if activated. Maybe they solved this in the recent upgrades, but if you already have the latest version that your computer allows and it doesn't work... tough luck.
There should be the option for "Aspect Ratio" on the graphic properties of your videocard. If yours an Intel, this is the window:

And at least on XP, just right-clicking on the desktop allows you to choose if you want Stretching or Aspect Ratio.
If you your video card's a Nvidia, there shouldn't be any problems and you just need to activate this:

Stage 4 theme is gonna stick to me so hard.
Background being similar to the first stage of SA, and reminding me of MS's Dimension of Reverie? Fyes. And what's her face being the boss and using Yoshika will be lulzy, as pointed out by numerous people.

Stage 4, Stage 5, and Stage 6, but ESPECIALLY Stage 6, they all have wonderful music, and so do the bosses. Arrangers are going to have so much fun producing music, as will I listening to it! I can't wait! ^.^

@Mew: That's a hard question to answer since getting more spirits leads to trance mode, which then leads to doubling any resources you pick up. Just find the style that works best for you.

The Extra Boss battle is the funnest battle I've ever had in any touhou game ever - the music and fun spells just break my belive that there could be any evil in this world.

in there? Because I am. It's only for a few seconds, but I can hear it! If I could say how long into the theme it is, I'd say roughly 1 minute and 30 seconds in.
Censoring music in case people like picking it out themselves. ^^

- no Last Words.. maybe Overdrives replace them? (must check. Still, IN had 17 LWs..)
- music and characters are okay (not bad), but patterns weren't impressive.. (stages look a bit more interesting, well-paced than most other games, though)
- scoring doesn't seem to give many elements to consider (just play as flawlessly as you can, use bombs as resources for getting trances, trances for raising point value, etc), just making a mistake doesn't seem to be overly punitive (restart-inducing) like in MoF. What I mean, is that the scoring here (though not perfect-play inducing) doesn't feel intuitive (at least it doesn't emphasize grazing as much, maybe). There doesn't seem to be many opportunities for raising the Trance meter as fast as in other games, too (Crimzon Clover and DOJ come to mind; for some reason, Crimzon Clover's showers of stars in Simple Mode or Break Meter did convince me that scoring through raising the meter was a worthy risk :D).

Is it just me, or does the danmaku in this game look rather visually dull? There's no particularly vibrant colors or patterns or anything until significantly late in the game. Most of the bullets are just kind of there.
Given that the danmaku visuals are one of my favorite parts of the games themselves, I find this rather disappointing. It might just be a matter of personal taste in danmaku patterns, though.

Played with it a bit (read: once). It didn't blow me away as hard as GFW, the danmaku also seems to be a step back from GFW (
Extra's non-spells, that's quite some intricate pattern there
). It's not bad, though, I'm definitely enjoying it as much as 10/11/12.
Music-wise, I think S1, S2, S5 and S6
are not as strong as UFO's; the rest is very nice.

Just 1cc'd it on Easy with Reimu.
Funny that I had so much trouble with Yoshika and Seiga (a tad), but Futo and Miko I managed to flawlessly defeat with no lives lost. Did I mention I LOVED Seiga/Yoshika's battle theme? Futo's theme I also like because it has an old Japanese feel to it. I should attempt Normal again (even though I probably won't be able to beat the tanooki even if I manage to 1cc it on that difficulty).
And some people mentioned the game being a bit short. I felt that way too. Not sure why. I was more than a bit surprised when I got to the final stage seemingly quickly.

Mamizou <-> Nue (Foreign youkai, able to change forms)
Leaves Murasa out of the equation, but otherwise works fine. I know it's probably not going to happen, but Byakuren vs. Miko would make an interesting Touhou 14.

The spirit world tracks seems to be less... different from the original tracks. I noticed that when I play stage 1-3, I can literally memorize where I should Trance just by recalling how the music is supposed to go. Stage 4-6... not so much (though it may be because I haven't actually tried to memorize much yet)

I have the same bug with replays I had in the demo. When I start one it wants me to play the game instead of actually showing the replay.
Which sucks, since I had dodged the first wave of the extra boss' first card by going in circles in the middle (luck beyond FUCK)
edit: This is so weird, I moved the replay files from appdata/roaming/shanghai alice to my installation folder and now it works :s

Well Momizou does come from outside the border. From an island called Sado in fact (according to the manual).
With people going in as they please (Kanako even brought a whole lake with her...) the border is getting isn't really seperating much anymore. A game in the outside world doesn't seem too unlikely. It would be interesting to see how ZUN depicts the outside world.

If I remember right, a chapter in Oriental and Sacred Palace says that Gensokyo used to be full of water. In that particular chapter, there was a clam youkai creating illusions. Funny enough, that mirage showed the same large building that appears during the final battle.

Just as with the demo, I'm getting pretty good impressions from the game so far. So what if lower difficulties are supposedly easier? I don't play them. Lunatic is still as challenging as ever, meaning I'll actually have a reason to come out this break I've been taking. So far everything I've faced is actually a "fair" challenge, unlike, say, how Shou was. :V Quite a few attacks still trip me up, but I'm having fun learning them, so it's all good.
I'll need time to get more acquainted with the new music and characters, though I'm already digging the Stage 4 theme. I feel like Miko's
theme is surprisingly underwhelming though. It's a shame, since I think her design is pretty badass otherwise.
And a massive "fuck you" to all those bugs. Seriously ZUN, how in the world did you miss some of these... Not to mention that quite a few bugs still remain from the trial version. Do you need to start hiring outside help to fix them on time or something?

Zun doesn't have a company working for him, he probably has as many testers as you have fingers on one hand, or less. Plus testing stuff on non-Japanese machines (applocale or not) is probably not exactly high priority.
Sure bugs suck, but with the amount of game breaking bugs existing in full blown multi-million commercial games out there, complain about Zun's? really? Ok, even complaining is fine, but to actually act like he's being lazy or something for not having them dealt with is another.

Youmu's a bit overpowered, some of the music I don't find quite as listenable "by itself" as in previous games (But they fit the stages/bosses in play very well), and it is a little on the lack-of-resources side (That just might be me and my lack of Spirit World though)
Also Goddamn, while extra stage is short and easy for once, the actual boss fight is driving me nuts. I can barely capture the first card nevermind handle anything else. And this is coming from someone who beat Ran and Suwako on first attempt...

Since she died her power upgraded from listening to 10 people to listening to the people's 10 desires. By listening to them she can see trough people at Satori level. If they have all the desires at least. Apparently Youmu is missing 2 since she's half dead.

Well, the translation that we were given specifically said Youmu had 8 desires, and didn't have the two desires associated with living/dying. This made Miko think she was a hermit or something like that I think, and also made her say Youmu was "incomplete".

The music isn't that great this time around. The only songs I find memorable are
Old Yuanshen (S4 Boss), The Dream Palace Great Mausoleum (S5 Theme), Shoutoku Legend ~ True Administrator (S6 Boss),
and Futatsuiwa From Sado (Ex Boss)
but the rest are pretty bland.
Same goes for the danmaku.
Either the spellcards are a color-less, random clusterfuck or just a very simple and thin layer of organized bullets. I am dissapointed...
The characters are pretty meh, but I'll guess I'll get used to them. (King Altador girl
is already my new favorite Touhou. Sorry Kogasa!) :P

Being Ten Desires' first day I'm not surprised some can't 1cc it! Easy or not, sometimes you just need to have the patterns in your mind.
I myself am happy I've pulled a hard 1cc in my first try. Afterwards I wasn't able to do it again, not even on normal....
And extra is pretty fun! I still haven't beat it though.

Yep, noticed it after I did a lol unlock run with Reimu and getting owned by weird gimmicks from stage 6 going in blind.
Also, you don't have to complete a stage in order to unlock stage practice at all. I believe you can Game Over on it, and you can practice.

Right, can anyone explain to me what exactly these 10 desires are? Other than the two Youmu doesn't have, what are the others? And what religion is this based on?
To be honest my main problem with this game were the patterns. They just didn't stand out that much. We don't see nice bullet displays like Mountain of Faith and Wind God Hidden in Tree Leaves. The final bosses' first and sixth cards look rather bad to be honest, unlike the spells they seem based after. The other problem would be the music. While it is pretty good overall, I don't feel any tracks standing out. It's like you like some songs when you here them but you don't go "Damn, this is freaking awesome". Kinda like UFO, but I liked some UFO tracks very much after a while. Maybe I just have to listen to it more, but I still find the music in this game weaker.
EDIT: Mamizou's is awesome. Hadn't unlocked extra myself so I didn't know

1cc 'good' endings are Reimu = 01, Marisa =03, and so forth, and continue 'bad' ending is Reimu 09, Marisa 10, and so forth. Some requirement I would imagine in order to unlock ending 02, 04, and etc.

Swirls of AA bullets are totally original and colorful, right. I've seen plenty better Danmakufu scripts posted here.

spell are the most well-thought Stage 6 cards
in any Touhou game ever. Such complex and innovative patterns.
The only redeeming point is that this game doesn't use repeating bullet behavior (i.e. the 2nd wave is slightly different than the first, and so on).
It's not as bad as it sounds, I'm still having fun with the game but I can't shake the feeling of playing against reused patterns and really, REALLY simple Danmakufu spell cards anyone can whip up in 5 minutes.

Extra stage is actually mostly boring because you can kill most of the enemies before anything happens. Otherwise, leaving the enemies alone makes for some fun times.
As for the ten desires, it simply doesn't matter what the desires are. In both buddhism and taoism, a goal is to relieve yourself of all desire. Whether or not all human desire can be summed up in ten fundamental desires is irrelevant. I'm actually really starting to like the theme here, if only because Miko talks about desire and detachment, yet her life has ironically been filled with her own desire and all of her downfalls have been due to those desires. And such.

After playing through the last stage myself, it appears that the background isn't watery like I originally thought when I first saw it on the stream.
The only water-related theme that I can find is Futo's boat. If Reimu's conversation with Mamizou means anything, then maybe the next game will be water-themed.
Not that I'm desperate to have water-themed Touhou game, mind you...

On the Stage 6 Spellcard 7, the position of the boss is near the center, but in Spell Practice she is close to the top of the screen.
The card would actually be much harder with her in the center yes? Because there would be less space to run about.

It seems to me that some comments here are unnecessarily harsh to the game, when the game impressed me a lot.
I mean, not every spellcard in the game has to have sophisticated programming behind it to make it great, right? Spellcard is more about the theme and pattern afterall.
Also, just because a spell is made just out of bullets with simple motion doesn't mean it's easy to make. There's loads of parameters that one can change to have the spell behave so differently that it takes a whole different approach to capture it. Then there's the difficulty in balancing the difficulty of the spell.
Gimmicks are plentiful throughout the game so I don't see how the spells are not memorable. Stage 5's spells were pretty, midboss's spell was so cool.
Then, ZUN has made thousands of spellcards probably throughout these years, so it's seems pretty unfair to pick whatever spell has similarity with old ones and call it unoriginal, when it's just similar concepts with different presentation. (and I think presentation is very important too, Stage 5 boss's rain spell would be quite bland if it didn't have the whole boat riding theme wouldn't it?
)
It's quite impossible to expect ZUN to come up with like 50 new danmaku concepts for a game every year.
It's like calling Nue a Flan copycat when they are totally different characters with vast difference in personality and background.
I really liked the details that were put into the spellcards where Yoshika has to be revived in stage 4, like being inserted life or something with Seiga's curve stream thingy in the first spellcard, Seiga floating on top of Yoshika as Yoshika floats upward in the 2nd card, etc)
Music-wise, I don't really like the style of the boss themes ZUN had, it's more boss-like, but makes it less awesome to listen outside of the game. :P The stage themes are really amazing, I can't stop listening to stage 4 theme's intro. XD

Thoughts:
This game requires the most memorization to date - whereas in other games you needed to memorize where enemies came in to kill them before they shot, but you could deal with not doing so, this game requires you to memorize where enemies spawn to get trance to get resources, which you cannot get away with ignoring.
Lives are still hard to get, though the lowering was a nice touch.
CURVY LASERS
Music's a lot more ambient, especially the final boss. Will need to listen more to form concrete opinions. Only new track I've heard that I didn't like up front was the S5 boss.

Like S5 boss, the rain spell. Just following whatsherface across the screen on normal pretty much completely dodges it. It's possible to clear it without even looking at the bullets...
Easiest S5 boss ever, even with the bullshit zigzags.

That's one of my favorite cards, for exactly that reason.
Trying to time it out on hard is a bitch to do though. I was expecting bullets that size to have similar hitboxes to the white ones from SA (Danmaku Paranoia etc.), but they use the whole thing instead.
I think Miko's second-last and last cards should probably have been switched. The second-last one's a fair bit harder.
After playing for a while, I'm fine with the difficulty in this game. It's hard enought to be challenging (at least, for someone like me) while still being fun. Unlike UFO.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter if you use the bomb Sakuya is making you use since she's giving you an extra one anyways. Just don't use two bombs and you'll be fine, for both EoSD and TD.

(sp?) lasers like a derp. I also like her music, the way the fight plays (ilu for this battle ZUN, seriously) and her legs.
I'm not particularly sure why, but I also find myself having lots of fun with stage 5 as well.
Music wise, stage themes are awesome, boss themes I will not be able to remember to save my life. I'll talk about patterns when I've had more practice with the stage 5 and 6 bosses.

As much as I love Youmu's slashes, I seem to have the greatest success with Sanae, followed by Reimu.
I just hope I don't have a repeat of UFO, where Sanae's dialogue makes me dislike her again. Someone posted a translated dialogue a few pages back, so I can check that out later. In the meantime, I just try to keep in mind that she's still young and with something to prove.

You simply have to kill the bomb-dropping fairies before them fast enough. You shouldn't need to use Trance or bombs to do it, provided you have enough Power.

I think they only appear if you've defeated the preceding enemies in a certain amount of time.

Note that if you save your trance and you manage to kill them all, you can quickly trance and eat up all the spirits for double value, then you still keep about 4 seconds of trance from being interrupted by dialogue.

there's 5 fairies that drops life/bomb points before Kyouko Midboss
and there's 7 Fairies that drops life/bomb points before Kyouko Boss
You have to kill the fairies fast so I suggest using Trance to kill the last set of fairies since You probably won't have enough spirits to fill up again if you killed the first 5 fairies with trance

That Zun plagiarism claim is absolutely ridiculous. The only thing similar is the tail, the leaf, and the brown hair. In the case of the first two, that's what a tanuki is generally depicted to have. It's like saying that Chen was a ripoff of Coku because she has cat ears and twin tails. Also tanukis are brown, so brown hair is a given, and the hair style must be purely coincidental.

I don't like this trio.
Seiga deceives her family (by faking her own death) in order to train to become a hermit; and while she does become one, she reached her goal on malicious terms, and Heaven doesn't accept her. Miko goes through her life pursuing immortality because she doesn't like that humans are fated to die. So, Seiga finds her and she takes up taoism, in which one of the fundamentals is that you get rid of the fear of death and desire for life, or rather, not going towards the goal of immortality. She tries to cheat and ruins her body while achieving superhuman powers. Futo, who belongs to a family of powerful shintoists, practiced taoism in secret and later met up with Miko. The three of them (well, Seiga only suggested the plan, she already was a hermit) plot to have Japan ruled by buddhism to keep Japan passive so that they alone can achieve immortality, and Futo manipulates a powerful political faction to become followers of buddhism. So now a religious war starts, the emperor dies of an illness and suddenly woahshit it's the shintoists' faults. Buddhism rules the country and tons of people die, all because these three want to become something of gods. Miko, having ruined her body, doesn't think she can wait long enough to become immortal, so she cheats again by becoming a shikaisen. But first, because she's a pussy, she tells Futo to die with her. Futo goes "oh ok I can be immortal too" and they get ready to fall asleep. Miko fakes it so she can watch Futo to make sure that she won't actually die if she falls asleep, awesome friend, and then she goes ahead. Then the buddhists build a fucking temple on her grave because they're pretty sure she was a manipulative bitch. I don't like this trio.
Seiga deceives her family (by faking her own death) in order to train to become a hermit; and while she does become one, she reached her goal on malicious terms, and Heaven doesn't accept her. Miko goes through her life pursuing immortality because she doesn't like that humans are fated to die. So, Seiga finds her and she takes up taoism, in which one of the fundamentals is that you get rid of the fear of death and desire for life, or rather, not going towards the goal of immortality. She tries to cheat and ruins her body while achieving superhuman powers. Futo, who belongs to a family of powerful shintoists, practiced taoism in secret and later met up with Miko. The three of them (well, Seiga only suggested the plan, she already was a hermit) plot to have Japan ruled by buddhism to keep Japan passive so that they alone can achieve immortality, and Futo manipulates a powerful political faction to become followers of buddhism. So now a religious war starts, the emperor dies of an illness and suddenly woahshit it's the shintoists' faults. Buddhism rules the country and tons of people die, all because these three want to become something of gods. Miko, having ruined her body, doesn't think she can wait long enough to become immortal, so she cheats again by becoming a shikaisen. But first, because she's a pussy, she tells Futo to die with her. Futo goes "oh ok I can be immortal too" and they get ready to fall asleep. Miko fakes it so she can watch Futo to make sure that she won't actually die if she falls asleep, awesome friend, and then she goes ahead. Then the buddhists build a fucking temple on her grave because they're pretty sure she was a manipulative bitch. So yeah the religious factions in Gensokyo are getting interesting. Two shinto, one buddhist, and now one taoist. I would think Miko's faction isn't particularly threatening, since several heroines suggest Futo wasn't hard to beat. Meanwhile, Byakuren's faction just keeps getting bigger, she got two new members without even appearing in this game. Having Miko get them all riled up could get very messy!

Actually, I'm more concerned about Suwako myself. If you've read the wiki on the new characters, there's a Moriya member who gets offed over political thanks to Soga. That's if Suwako's family name is related to this Moriya clan.

She served Miko together with Futo, but she was denied resurrection as a human due to her previous connections with Futo. It would be more convenient for Futo to deal with her as a spirit.
The Soga and the Mononobe had fought long and hard over Buddhism, but Futo and Tojiko's relationship is still in good terms, and took on a give-and-take nature.
Now, they both hate Buddhism.

IIRC, in one of Sanae's good endings, Either Kanako or Suwako note that people are happy with Byakuren's temple but says she doesn't trust Byakuren's temple and that they'll have to keep an eye on it.

Wow, but I wish I could read the endings to this game. Most of the time you can infer the endings for the most part (just assume that it's a happy ending) but this time I really wonder what the heck happened at the end of all this. Even the extra story prologue doesn't really indicate what the final resolution was, although it does confirm that Byakuren already knew about them, which is why she had the temple built there in the first place
. Course, Futo and company figured that Byakuren already knew, too, which is why they called her the dark lord, lol

I realized that, if Trance'd at the right moment, you'll get a bunch of bombs. On a near perfect run in Normal, I got 5 lives and ohgodsomany bombs. That means, in order to successfully Ten Desires, one must learn how to not waste bombs. Use bombs wisely, my friends. BV

Presumably Nue told her about Reimu and what Reimu's job entails. Her dialogue with Reimu and Sanae indicates she was very aware of the Hakurei Shrine Maiden before they arrived. However, she had yet to SEE this Hakurei Shrine Maiden, as she mistakes Sanae to be the Hakurei Shrine maiden in her dialogue with Sanai.
Basically, Nue etc told her about Reimu, but she still hadn't seen or met Reimu in person yet (hence mistaking Sanai for Reimu)
...that doesn't explain how she knew how to transform into Reimu while fighting Sanae, though. Hmm.

Seiga's & Futo's spellcards
were the most fun I had in the game; captured them on my first try. What caught me by surprise was stage 5 midboss' zigzag arrows
and Miko's double gold ring thingys which I think it was her second spellcard
...
I also noticed that the dagger-type danmaku has a smaller hitbox than the older ones and the Boss icon thing that's usually at the bottom of the screen's gone
. Idk whether the latter is a bug or a feature.

Naw it's there. It's a faint red dot that's blurred around the edge... blends in very easily with the whatever design that's around the game screen.

Just save Trance for when said bomb/life-fragment fairies appear. You may need to run through Stage Practice so you remember where they all are, but you can get quite a few extra bombs this way. Using up bombs during bosses also means you can get an extra Trance or two to capitalize on the bomb/life drops after Spellcards.
I remember I just barely reached the fifth Extend (18 fragments) before the end of my Lunatic run. You kinda have to work for it, but TD gives almost as many lives as EoSD and MoF. ZUN himself recognized that this game still gives fewer lives overall though. :V

It's interesting to see that
the plot of the Touhou games is starting to evolve from simply "someone starts incident, Reimu and co. beat her up, everyone becomes friends and has tea." If we have a HOLY WAR on our hands, it'll probably be fleshed out in more detail in Touhou 14. That, or the plot will be resolved in a decimal game (Touhou 13.5?), so that ZUN can use a new plot for the next shmup.
If that's the case, another fighter would be nice. I wanna see Yoshika vs. Yuyuko, Miko vs. Byakuren, and Mamizou vs. Ran. :]

. The first time if you count Su-san's PMiSS appearance. (Why is her name never mentioned anywhere on my Google's internet if Danbooru wiki claims that it's her commonly used, even almost canonical name? What do we call her if not that? Medicine's doll? Medicine's original form?) Weird, in ZUN's earlier works there were more girls with them than without them. Maybe a spanish speaking fan made a fan game where all of his OCs (don't steal!) had short hair?

This is a universal glitch among us. ZUN will no doubt patch the game at some point, but until then there's a workaround. For whatever reason, if you are bombing while the spell card ends, the game won't crash. So, try and keep at least a bomb in reserve until the last three seconds of the spell card, and let it loose. That should solve your problem.

Just tried bombing with about half a second left on the clock. Still crashed.
New hypothesis: I have to bomb AND clear out a bunch of those shapes/figures by the end.

I'm confused about the continue system. Because on my first run I lost my final life in stage 6 (normal) and I swear to god I was only given 3 retry attemps.
While playing on lunatic the other day gave me 10 (!!!!) continues.

The hardest difficulty, Lunatic, is ready for the credit count (continue count) to be increased, so you should probably trying continuing as much as you need to clear it first. That will make things show up in Practice and Spell Practice, and it would be faster to practice there. Definitely.

Did anybody mention that you can death-trance?
Not sure if anyone did, but I'll back it up. You can activate Trances within the death-bomb window and not lose a life. Also not sure if this applies to anyone else, but back in the demo I used to refer to Trances as a result of dying as "death-Trance", so there's potentially confusion there. I've taken to calling the latter "suicide-Trances" (even if your death isn't willing :V) to differentiate it.

the game turned out to be quite fun, even if it did feel easier. the music grew on me fast, sounds refreshing with some hints of older tracks ever now and then. plot-wise
im guessing this game would be the second installment in the UFO trilogy (?) with the next game centred on the ultimate showdown between byakuren and miko?

I didn't really like Mamizou
's design from the get-go, and still think it's one of the goofiest ZUN's ever done, but considering the personality of the rest of the new characters she's easily my favorite of the new lot. >.> (of course, Yoshika is still queen among everyone in 10D, no questions asked)

When I heard she was a Tanuki, I thought she would change into whatever character you were playing as, and not just Reimu. The spell card name is still funny, anyway.

Whoa, what? That's...actually pretty harsh when you think about what that requirement asks from you. But I am interested~ Very interested~
On another note, I love how Mamizou
doesn't even show how she has bomb immunity. Until now every extra boss after Evil Eye Sigma showed something that showed why bombs were ineffective, from shields to transformations to fazing out of existence. Here, it's just "no sale!"

That's just what the blog said, and I'm not willing to test what the exact requirements are since I've already played through enough times just to see each ending once. But having a ton of bombs at the end has been working for me so far, so I'm pretty confident that part's right.

Nah. It unlocks a second loop, but only if you cleared with only one death and less than two bombs as well.

Looking on ZUNs twitter, he seems to be working hard on some of the bugs right this moment, so they are surely going to be fixed soon.
