Title: [Art] Nobu's sketches and art-ey stuff
Post by: Nobu on November 28, 2014, 01:54:38 AM
Moved my b-day thread to AAA from LJ to kick off my first art thread! I've always wanted to have my own art thread around here but was never serious enough about getting better until now. Thanks all for your requests and for giving me the push to do so, birthday well-wishers! Feel free to make more requests or just keep up with the stuff I produce.

-------------

I'll spend exactly 5 minutes on whatever the request, and hopefully the result will at least provide mild amusement to you. Drawings will be in pencil or pen, and photographed with my phone since I don't have a scanner. I've mostly practiced with and prefer drawing females, but it's up to you what you request.

I always liked the idea of giving to others on your birthday rather than receiving gifts.. it's the whole idea of 'being thankful for the people around you for your birthday'. Also that I like giving gifts.

Alternatively, (or in addition to), i'll answer any one question. I guess Q&A is all the rage these days.

Happy birthday, Nobu~!

Hm...For a drawing, how about...  Your own design for someone based on Sagittarius?

Also a question, since you said they could be additions:  What's your fondest memory here on MotK?

Wow, 5 minutes is not a long time at all. I reserve the right to go over sometimes.

[attach=1]

Fondest memory, eh? Hm... that's tough. I'll just list a few fond memories that come to mind:

- Becoming a shrine janitor. I never thought i'd be so happy getting a job so blue-collar.
- The contest where me and a couple others cooked recipes submitted by forum members and judged them. I remember baking some kind of European dessert in Japan using ingredients I brought from the US.
- The day Slaves drew me as a Touhou (http://i.imgur.com/ldxCMvO.jpg) and the wave of interest in Ijiyatsu before it eventually puttered out.
- The ID contest where I successfully wooed An-chan (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,2834.0.html) in 2009
- That Aoshi has given me birthday art for the past three years in a row, despite me being far less active than I used to be ;_; I'm so grateful, it was my only friend gift for at least a couple of those years. I want to return the grace tenfold.

You were in Japan?  How'd you like it there, if more questions are allowed?  Anyway, that sort of reminds me of Swedish Fish(the candy).  The ones in the US are:  Made in Canada, distributed by the US, and are based off a candy originating from, you guessed it, Sweden.

Ah, I think I joined after the Ijiyatsu craze.  Oh well, as long as the memories of it are good that's what matters, right?
...wait, so THAT'S where that design came from!

Oh man, I remember reading those in the archive section!  Some of those(yours for sure) were absolute gold.

Hope your birthday is/goes well for you!

Happy birthday to you, and may you have many more besides!

Let me see......if you don't mind doing the sketch, what would MotK look like as a person? (Or has that been done before?  :derp:)

I loved it, and want to go again sometime in the next year or so. I only spent ten days there though, a lot of it in the boonies.

My plan was to accept requests until the end of the weekend even though my birthday is the 28th, so keep em coming~ ^^

I'll resume the requests tomorrow starting with the Yukarin one!

Could you draw me a picture of Alice if that's OK?
And for a question: how did you start or learn how to draw?

[attach=1]

I started like how most do I suppose, doodling up through middle school and getting into anime, then trying to doodle anime. I've been on and off sketching for over 14 years with the most minimal of improvement due to me getting discouraged and going long stretches without drawing. As of last month I decided to buckle down and get serious, and now i've been drawing on a daily basis and feeling like i'm actually building towards improvement. Lately I've been digging through the A3 forum here and scouring the internet for tips, reference and advice and repeatedly drawing what I want to get good at the most.

Happy brryythday!
Since Alice was taken, can you draw a Koishi?

[attach=2]

What do you typically do on your birthday?

[attach=3]

I never have a set thing I do .. I usually try to spend it with at least once close friend though. Sometimes my birthday falls on Thanksgiving.

Happy birthday, nice to know that you're doing better.

Let's see... Miku as a Magical Girl? :3

Thank you! It's been a rocky couple of years, but it's been fun.

I was doodling while putting off going to bed last night and accidentally did one more out of order. I will do more when I get off work in a few hours.

Happiest of birthdays to you; hope the weekend goes smoothly~ XD

I have a request... draw yourself in a fighting pose~ :3 {Or your OC; whichever is best I suppose.}

Or both~

[attach=1]

Well here's 'both' xP She was going to have a deckbrush but it looked better without. This is probably what Nobu's fighting game neutral stance would look like.

And it should; i'm picking up a friend of mine and hanging out with him all weekend~

Ahhh that Alice is so cute! I'm gonna borrow that and maybe color it and possibly make it into a avatar. Thank you very much nobu!

Ahhh really? ;.; Thank you! If you were thinking of going that far maybe I could touch it up a little bit.. Girls are preparing~

Happy birthday. For the request, please draw whatever you'd think a 2hu based on Ryukishi07 would look like. If it helps, her ability would probably be something along the lines of conjuring illusions that aren't "false," so to speak (trying to find a happy medium between Higurashi and Umineko here).

Happy birthday, Nobu!  Thanks for goin out of your way to take requests like this, that's really cool of you.  As for me, I'd like to see a story all about how, Seija's life got flipped, turned upside down.  (Tl;dr: Seija in the throne from the Fresh Prince intro.  I have my reasons.  Bonus points for something ridiculous happening in the background.)

My question to you is fairly generic, but it had to be asked at some point: which 2hu game is best 2hu game, and what draws you to it?

Ore, Twintails Ni Narimasu has loli genderswap which is something i've always dreamed of in an anime ;_; Also twintails, which I like about 85% as much as thighhighs (which is saying a lot)

And wow she's pretty  :o I'm gonna work on her later once my drawing cooldowns are back up.

I couldn't think of anything really good to draw in the background for 'ridiculous' so I put Cirno warming up at a bonfire.

Argh I'm so bad at choosing a 'best' of something... but I'll have to say Touhou 10. It's one of the first Touhou games I played (and I fondly remember playing through without having known what the bosses looked like in advance, and bursting out in laughter when Kanako appeared with her ridiculous poof hair). Also, it's the game Suwako-sama was introduced in.

Happy birthday, man

Haven't seen a Kogasa yet, so I'll request that.

Haha I expended much of my *effort* on the Kogasa one so I mainly just played around with chibis. Have a few Tamas!

I know I already answered your question, but I spend much of my time catching up on old series rather than keep up with what's current. I just let myself stumble on whatever catches my eye on a whim. I have a pretty good ability to gauge what I like before checking a series out, so I have a lot of series that i'm intimidated to start because I know it'll light the fanatic in me! I always have my hands full.

Happy birthday Nobu~! We've never chatted before, but you seem to be a really lovable person ^^

As for your question, I've thought about it a while and I think I'll have to go with "There is no optimal number". The fun about fiction is that what is 'optimal' varies from person to person!

Oooh, um.. Wish me luck, I've only colored a handful of times my entire life and was gonna wait until after I get a tablet to make a serious attempt, but I guess now's a good a time as ever to mess around with it.  :ohdear:

I'll have to look into picking up some colored pencils or something today...

Oh my bad, you had mentioned before about coloring the Alice picture so I assumed you could before. No need to go that far, just making the picture is fine for now.

Here's some random excerpts from my sketchbook from the past week. I've been keeping to a daily regimen for over a month now, most i've drawn regularly in my whole life. Gotta keep it up.

Simple and cute!

Only the 3rd link works for me, it says "sorry, the requested page does not exist."
Also, apparently people hate photobucket, I would recommend puush or something else.

I love it! I love how colorful Alice is, she's so fun to color. (Sorry been drinking and at a company christmas party so I doubt I'll make sense.) How high you do the hair? Did you draw it all then add the headband or all at once? Seeing your sketchbook with all those eyes is... Something, can't find the words. Inspiring? I'll figure it out later lol. Thank again for the picture, I'm gonna start working on making it an avatar.

The sketches here definitely exhibit more of a silly flair and impression, especially this recent Alice. This is not an approach I am familiar with. :V

I do like seeing that you're practicing forms in sketchbook. It would also be good to see these in different perspectives as well.

Hm...perhaps for learning experience you can begin adding simple shading to these? :D

I don't remember! I think I drew an oval for the head, drew in the bangs and side framing hair, then gradually worked to the back.

I have been practicing shadings, but mainly on the eyes! I shade as a substitute for color for now, but once I get a better grasp of the other fundamentals I'll learn how to shade clothes and the like. And learning more about shading will follow naturally as I learn to color.

Someone else thought they were bunny ears :V It was a rush sketch and I mainly just blocked out where the horns would be, but didn't flesh them out much.

Oh! Thank you so much! Yes, this will be really useful at some point.

Right now i'm trying to focus study on one or two things at a time each day, and building up from there. Treating subjects as sort of an 'unlock system'. Before I do this I'd want to work more on at least expression, lower torso, and hands. Oh, and clothing, but that isn't as necessary to this meme per se..

If you are training seriously it might be good to read these six pages on facial construction before going on to expressions and so on. Understand form then stylise it.

Thank you for this! I am torn between not being very interested in too realistic faces but understanding that the fundamentals are important. And balancing what I want to draw versus what would be the most efficient to draw given my desire to get better quickly. I will try out this method soon.

Lately I've been focusing a lot on daily ellipses, lines, and figures. Figuring out what is the best method for me to lay down the basic framework, understanding basic muscle and bone groupings and the like, doing focused study on on particular feature at a time. I want to expand into clothing and shading soon though.

You don't necessarily have to strictly adhere to realism in studying and I don't either. You can stylise in practicing, but it's important that you understand what those guidelines are trying to show and be able to draw form than just symbols.

Without the ability to draw form, any hope of being able to color properly is lost.

I drew a little Suwako last night. Got a set of three good ink pens last night and was eager to play around with them. I like being able to ink a sketch then erase the pencil so I can analyze things with clean lines.

I have started learning how to shade, starting with the 'ball + shadow' and slowly expanding. Also paying more attention to clothes and their folds, and drilling anatomy.

@notapirate: thank you for the reference! I will definitely use this as I am drawn to improve my head technique. Right now I am prioritizing body over head.

The past few days has been entirely studying (http://i.imgur.com/aG5tJBE.jpg) and practicing  (http://i.imgur.com/0lJcB8L.jpg)face/head structure. I feel really satisfied tonight, like I got over some kind of mini-hump.

Comparison of a birthday sketch (1 month ago) and now (http://i.imgur.com/Hfxck6t.jpg)

I'm happier about the head/upper torso which is what i've been sweating over lately. The hips area gives me a headache from an angle which is the body area i'll probably focus on next. I can block out the general area of the feet well but I need to fill in details more. and I realize now that the legs are way short.

This, plus i'm ordering aordered a Huion H610 Pro tablet with Christmas money and get to try that out. ^___^ So much to study, so little time.

That's some pretty cute stuff! It's admirable how hard you work; keep it up ^^ And if you're taking requests... how about an Alice, looking serene in a forest?

Thanks~! I'll be getting to requests soonish. I feel like I need to do a bunch more grinding of certain things beforehand.

When I was experimenting with skin colors I thought the dark skin looked really good on her. Also, I love characters with dark skin. If I can bring more anime-styled darker girls into the world I would be pleased.

(and yes, I'm half-Filipino and tan.) so in one interpretation, this could actually be me cosplaying Nue.

Filling an entire sketchbook within 2 months? Whoa, that shows some intense dedication and a very aggressive pace! (by contrast it took me about 14 months to fill my previous ~60 page letter-size sketchbook, even when using it for writing....)
There are definitely signs of improvement in these comparisons -  not only in terms of aesthetics and form, but I particularly notice that the newer drawing express slightly more dynamism (mostly via postures and expressions). That's definitely progressing nicely.

I might be taking a cautious angle here (that, and 4am logic is speaking on my behalf :colonveeplusalpha:), but I would definitely encourage finding a moderate pace to continue improvements - doing too much at once can easily lead to burnout as well as a growing gap between perceived and actual skill (which tends to result in frustration and all the related stuff). Of course, cram sessions on specific topics are definitely handy in their own right, but for the most part slow and steady methods are far more preferable.

THank you, that's good to hear. ^^ I tried improving the dynamism in the second image with a nice through line and a more fluid snake pattern. I've been studying Nsio's tutorials (http://nsio.deviantart.com/gallery/45894768/Tutorials) lately.

I totally understand this sentiment (and thank you for worrying about me!), but all things considered I think I've been managing so far pretty well. I've been interested in animation for over 20 years, and drawing for that long too. But I never drew anywhere close to a consistent schedule and I would get discouraged really quickly. Draw like two little things and then be done with drawing for months on end. Once I buckled down to a 'draw every day' schedule two months ago and focused on improvement, I've been a lot happier in life AND cashing in on the shift to a regular schedule.

Really, i've just been keeping to these tenants and letting the rest filter in naturally:
1. Draw every day.
2. Keep a large swipe file.
3. Keep moving.
4. Finish what you start.

There used to be a small minimum of 2 small sketchbook pages a day relatively filled, as sketchy or as focused as I want. But I never have an issue of running into the minimum anymore and just drawing *something* is crucial. I completely changed how I save images (now by aesthetic and personal appeal, and more 'things I admire and want to emulate' now). 'Keep moving' is just so I don't get burned out, and so I get out of my comfort bubble. And I find that finishing things is definitely the better goal than 'making sure its perfect' for now.

No lie, drawing is my #1 past time now. I only work 15 hours a week and don't go to school, so that means I can pretty much work as if i'm a full time independent student. And thanks to 7 years of undergrad and 2 years of grad school, I'm pretty good at doing the student thing by now.

Day 3 - Favorite Troll - Karkat (warning, minor amounts of blood ((nosebleed))) (http://i.imgur.com/5k220Iv.png)

Been trying out a lot of new things. Cel shading, shading in general, complicated hand positions, etc etc. Trying to have fun with it and push myself too.

Your hand practicing looks pretty convincing and impressive. I like hands.

This isn't really advice, because I have none to give, but there may be something to try. When going for a digital 'painty' effect, instead of thinking of drawing with strokes, try 'shaping' shapes (ie: blocking shapes/colors) instead. For example, smear some color in the general area you want it in and use the eraser or other colors to shape it. Did you know that, in a general sense, you can draw more accurate representations of something by erasing off bits of a blob of color than you can by drawing lines? Naturally, this would likely not be the case with professionals. But may be interesting to try. Contours is kinda what this helps with, as doing inner details is hard with this. Random musings.

This week has been a lull due to mercury retrograde a weird funk I can't explain, and my only pet dying in my arms a couple of days ago. So i've been hovering just above my 'minimum quota' of drawing per day for the most part. And mostly just lots and lots of faces.

I was pretty happy about this face though. (http://i.imgur.com/wnJ4WNS.jpg) I thank Suwako-sama for the inspiration.

Thank you! I think i've heard of that before but i'll definitely try it out sometime. I found that it's generally easier to make a shaded in oval and then erase the inside versus just drawing it normally.

Well it's approaching my birthday again, and one year since I started kicking my drawing study into overdrive. There was a lull from early spring to late summer, but I've thoroughly gotten back into the swing of things. I'm trying to finish filling my third sketchbook by then.

Here are some Undertale MC I drew recently, my rough for Touhou 20th anniversary picture, a Suika, some chibis, and a page I did while practicing faces--->spontaneous Aladdin-->inking just now.

Too much adorableness!

Also glad to see you back about, though that might just be more me being unobservant so...

/me shrugs

Thank you

Nah you're right, I have the bad tendency to disappear off for months at a time and then come back out of nowhere. No wonder why I associate with Koishi?

Super cute stuff, especially the chibis; I think the eyes really work for me!
