Danmakufu Contest #4
Laser Light Show
The contest is now closed
See the results here. (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=5038.msg269466#msg269466)
Hey guys! Time for another contest! As the name implies it involves lasers. The main rule is you can only use lasers. This means no normal bullets.
Guidelines:
- Up to 3 attacks can be submitted.
- You may use a stage for backgrounds, but only that. No stage enemies.
- Both straight and curvy lasers may be used.
- It is possible to make a laser that looks and behaves like a bullet. However, doing so is going against the point of this contest so doing so will result in disqualification. Basically when I play the script, I better not see small stubby lasers that could be mistaken as bullets.
- Script will be judged mainly on how fun and creative the danmaku is, but also a little on how the overall script looks and feels. Focus more on the danmaku though, that's worth more points.
- Multiple difficulties are allowed.
- Ripped graphics and sound are also allowed. No one really cares on this side of the world anyway.
- The latest version of the script will be considered your entry. If you submit an entry and then later want to correct a mistake or add effects, as long as the newer version is submitted before the deadline, it will be taken as your entry instead of the older one.
- And here's a big one: If I download your script and it errors out on me due to missing shot replace files, absolute file paths, or similar things, you will be disqualified during the judging period. If you submit before the deadline and I or someone else happens to notice before the contest closes, you can correct the mistake and resubmit it before the deadline and the script be judged like normal. I highly advise you to look at this tutorial (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=4752.0) to avoid being disqualified for this rule.
I will be doing the judging. Contest closes on February 21nd, 2010 at 23:59:59 GMT. Any script not submitted by that timestamp according to this forum's clock will be disqualified. Please include your name somewhere in your script's description or title to help in organization and judging. In the spirit of the last two contests, I will also say that I may possibly submit an entry but will not judge it, but not submit one anyway.
Good luck to all the entrants.
Edit: The deadline has been extended for a week. The new deadline is February 28nd, 2010 at 23:59:59 GMT. Good luck on your entries.
-
YAAAAAAAAY IM IN! BEAM SPAM!
Is there a limit to time in any of the attacks?
-
mega shou remakes :| most of these entries are gonna kill me if I try them... :ohdear:
I'm gonna try to submit an entry for this one...(completely not shou-related... meaning... probably no/not that many curvy lasers) expect something from me not too soon though (hope I'll do better this time)
-
If somebody tries to imitate Shou they have already lost.
-
If somebody tries to imitate Shou they have already lost.
Lemme guess. Because you're going to do it?
-
I'm gonna try to make something, but chances are it'll turn out like last contest: I make something that really isn't fit for posting. >_>
-
Stickied and wishing all the contestants good luck. I won't be joining this either. I basically don't have the will or time to currently work on dnh. I prefer to have that little spare time spend on Iji or Dcs
-
Lemme guess. Because you're going to do it?
Hahahahahano.
-
GRAAARGH Why must thin lasers have such an abysmal collision detection?!
...also, I'm obviously in if I can find myself enough time to flesh out a whole script...
-
If somebody tries to imitate Shou they have already lost.
If CreateLaserC didn't obliterate my framerate I would have done this just because of your post. Done it and lost anyways.
-
Now that I finally have time, I can actually put forward a legit entry for once :V
-
Pure laser .....
If I got an idea, I'll join too.
-
Am I allowed to use bullets with no hit detection or graphics? because i need them in many patterns to create subordinate lasers :(
on a side note:
Obj_Create(OBJ_SINUATE_LASER);
ObjSinuateLaser_SetWidth(obj,15);
ObjSinuateLaser_SetLength(obj,75);
commands for curvy object lasers, they behave as bullets for most part. aside from the curvyness
these functions are undocumented as far as i know

I'm gonna only be playing the script, not looking through them. As long as I don't SEE any bullets (as in, they are invisible and don't kill the player), you'll be fine.
-
Are enemys inside the spellcard, being spawned by the boss allowed to shoot lasers?

Yes you can have familiars. The familiars are also bound by the "only lasers" rule. Also, I hope you don't plan on abusing the hitbox of the familiar to kill the player.

i do not.

What if I make lasers that look like bu--
.....Never mind.
Shouln't lasers look shiny? Regular bullets should shine like that (except maybe for 03's.)
-
Your rules on lasers that act like bullets are unclear. Do you mean that you can't have lasers that act like bullets period, or none that act, and look like them?
-
If a laser can plausibly be mistaken as a bullet in any way, you are disqualified. Do not try your luck.

like for example take a bullet whice,s size is 16x16 and make the laser have the size 32x32?

I asked more or less out of paranoia. I'm using lots of lasers as really long bullets in essence. (150x7 dosn't sound too confusible with a bullet)
EDIT: I am dissapoint. I just realised the rules forbid Nue-stule laser-bullets. :<
-
I have a laser that's 250x250 px. That shouldn't possibly be mistaken as a bullet. :yukkuri:

Instead it'd be mistaken for a angry Nuke-tan shooting disqualification rays.

That's fine.

That's kinda iffy. Try thinking from the perspective of a non-Danmakufu scripter. Something like what you described may just look like a giant pixellated bullet to them instead of a laser.
-
Not that I'm entering or anything, but what about a laser that bends into a circle and flies at the player?
-
That would be one amazingly programmed laser. Considering how curvy lasers behave in Danmakufu, the only way to do that would be a bendy effect object with invisible bullets positioned along it.
-
I just had an idea that sounds good on paper
no pun intended
but will probably flop in practice. Let's see if I can make it work for this -- or finish it, for that matter.
EDIT: ...Nope, don't see how it would work. Back to the drawing board.
-
Sad to say, but not entering. Been banned from everything electronical due to feeding the dog an hour late. Don't expect me back on for at least two-three weeks. Risking my neck enough as is.
-
Sure, why not? I'll give this one a go.
http://www.mediafire.com/?zn2nmwnyyde (http://www.mediafire.com/?zn2nmwnyyde)
I don't think it's particularly exceptional, but... eh. I'll bring up the rear, at least. I could barely come up with anything decent that involved only lasers and that I could wrap my mind around actually getting to work properly.
-

You can ask about it in the Q&A thread, or get on irc (http://webchat.ppirc.net/?channels=danmakufu) if you want. Sometimes the answer gets overlooked, and needs a second mind to think about it. Don't worry about it being copied or anything, we're not not like that here. Well, I'm not.
-
Wish I could participate, but I don't know anything about programming.
Oh well, I can at least look forward to playing these. Already played the first one. That first spellcard was the best one in it. Did a perfect pacifist on the entire script as well.
-
Of all the times to hit on a huge flood of ideas, why NOW do I have too much else to do?
I might enter, but only if I can get all this other stuff done.
-
Oh....
32 days left, too quite.
Just got some idea, but may be I can't make it in time - final exam and too many work to clear before 21 Feb'. I'll try my best.
-
Since victory by default is kind of boring, I think I'll increase the number of entries by 1. :V
My entry. (http://www.mediafire.com/?ljywtjijzgt)
Contains version for normal and lunatic difficulty.
Some of the lasers are kind of bullet-like, but given how they are used I hope they fit still within the boundaries of the contest. Also, if the last card causes slow down, then I am sorry. It runs fine on my PC, but I think it may prove problematic...

A minor thing, but it still says Lunatic on the side on Normal Mode :V

My entry, put together just for fun.

entry

3 spells total
I used marx for the sprite again. :V
-
Oh, no. I can't finish my entry in time. Ah, well.
-
Here, I'll list the cards by name here, so you can anticipate.
Time Stream "Relativity of Light" [done]
Arcane Art "Color Spray" [done, may be a framerate-killer]
"Future of War" [multi-phase survival with supershort phases]
-
There's less than a day left! Hurry up if you plan to submit something!
It's official; I'm not putting in an entry. But I'll have something that fits the contest's rules, no doubt.
So... you're not entering the contest but you're making something that fits the rules. Am I supposed to judge it or not? :/
-
If I get it in before the deadline, go ahead. I'd been contemplating how to get the scripts to work in my head, so that's why I got those first two done so quickly.
You might have to excuse a lack of polish; I had to write a paper and a lab report recently, and I have a test in a couple of days.
-
Hey I'm not even done my first spell :V
-
Why do I only notice this thread now with 22 hours to go, Haven't been to bed yet, 5 hour jitsu meeting tomorrow and with good laser ideas I had recently on paper that will take far far too long to work out how to code?!?
ah well. Think I'll just download some of the entires and have a play instead :D
-
And now I have finished one spellcard :V
Well at least I have something to submit if time runs out
-
Hmm. Shall I give a time extension? The contest is sorely lacking in entries compared to the other ones anyway.
-
It would certainly be nice...
-
After discussing it
for like thirty seconds on IRC, I've decided to extend the deadline due to the difficulty of the subject matter. Because most people can only work their Danmakufu stuff on weekends, the extension will be a week long.
The new deadline is February 28nd, 2010 at 23:59:59 GMT. Good luck on your entries.

Extend!!

Woo hoo! o/
-
Wow I only finished one Spellcard yet.
And it wasn?t even anything special.
-CHECKPOINT-
Thanks for the time extend.
-
Dayyyymn, there go my chances at a decent placing. :V
But yeah, one week was quite little time for a contest with such extraordinary limitations.
I might revise my scripts, improve some cards ore replace them altogether, but I don't know if I'll have the time...
-
YES! Now I'll have more ti-- *goes to steal a card from Suneo*

That's good. I'm thinking about remaking my scripts.

ITT Blargel showing his soft side !
So an week extension huh. I wonder if this will make people refine their work more or finish it. Good luck!
-
Started something today, But doesn't hardly hold a card to some of the work here lol.
Either way pleased I got the maths in it working, if I can be bothered before the end of the deadline, I'll make some nice graphics for it, elsewise I'll package it with some existing ones I made for a my own game lol.
Think I'll try and think up a few extra cards to go with it as well, one alone isnt good enough when you see people with three in there entries :o
-
Well, I got everything done. Except, I could use some sort of background. Maybe something that flashes different colors at regular intervals...
Also, I think I'm willing to make a contest frame for this, as soon as I can figure out how to actually replace it.
-

It's easy. Just put a file named "STG_Frame" in the "img" folder in the root of the danmakufu folder

I figured two weekends might be enough, but considering how many people were saying stuff like "I'll submit but I only have..." or "If there were more time, I could..." I was dead wrong.
ITT Blargel showing his soft side !
Obviously I have a soft side! I mean a bagel is soft right? Even if I'm toasted I still become tsundere: hard shell with a soft inside. :V
And for those who are scratching your heads at that comment just now: Blargel -> Large bagel.

I hereby present the (un?)official frame for this contest!

In case you can't tell, the two pink lasers are supposed to be the L in Laser
And my entry:
...is several posts below this.
Images over 400x400 must be thumbnailed or linked. ~Matsuri
I don't recall being informed of this change, but I'll keep it in mind.
-
You may want to alter it somehow. I just tried and the script didn't work.
-
Mine? Hm, it's a self-contained folder... wait. Do you have the Shot Replace-v4 script? You'll need that. It should be installed in "\lib"

This is not self-contained.

Man, what's the point of the /lib folder anyways?
All it does is cause unnecessary headache
-
This is not self-contained.
...Then I'll rectify that real quick...
...with a Correcting Edit! HA! (http://www.mediafire.com/?d1diyyyz5ny)
-
Man, what's the point of the /lib folder anyways?
All it does is cause unnecessary headache
It's only a headache because we're unorganized about it. People who release things that require stuff from the /lib folder really should be telling us which files should be in there and giving a download link to all the stuff that is needed for his script to work. It really is more convenient to everyone else if you just package everything together though, even if it does cause more repeated code between scripts.
Also, AweStriker:
If I download your script and it errors out on me due to missing shot replace files, absolute file paths, or similar things, you will be disqualified during the judging period.
That implied that I expect the scripts to run regardless of where I extract it, even if it's in a brand new th_dnh folder with no lib.
-
IMO: Lib folder should die, it shouldn't ever exist. The only three folders that are legal to be created in your DNH folder should be: 'se' 'img' and maybe 'manual' if you want to add Html based manual.
Aside from that, anything that has to do with scripts do not belong there.

How would someone that submitted 3 spellcards be "graded" as opposed to submitting just one? Is the scoring going to be done on an attack-by-attack basis, or on the person's entry as a whole? In other words, is having one really good spellcard worth more than having 3 kinda good ones?
-
OH NO! I FORGOT TO WORK ON MINE!
*goes work on mine.*
I hope I get this thing finished... *sweat sweat* :ohdear:
EDIT: I STILL can't figure out how to use Sinuate lasers and object arrays and all that stuff.
But... Well, this is my entry. CreateLaser01 only. Graze graze graze. *hopes to at least get last place* *hopehopehope*
EDIT: Never mind. I'm going to get disqualified because I didn't even put any effort in this entry.
-
From my perspective, quality is generally preferred over quantity. The only thing is that with three cards you have a variety of opportunities to impress the judge instead of just one.
-
What if we have three high quality cards :smug:
I hope I have time to finish my last spell/fine tune some stuff :x
-

Basically what Drake said. Quality over quantity is preferred (quality AND quantity would be even better :V), but when it comes down to it, all the judging is really gonna be done with my gut feeling. If there is a submission that is just one awesome spellcard and a submission that is three slightly worse spellcards, then the three will probably win. If, however, the three-card submission is two okay cards and one pretty cool card, the one awesome spellcard will probably win.

Kisume is not that fat V:<

here's my entry:

Even though this is my first post on the forum I've been around for a while, mostly reading tutorials and stuff to learn how to use danmakufu.
as for the script, I happened to run across something while experimenting with CreateLaserA the day before the contest was announced, so out of pure luck I had most of my entry ready before the contest even started. :D
-
Of course Kisume isn't that fat.
*hits myself in the head with a metal bucket*

I feel compelled to ask whether this will have a video series

It's again... (http://www.mediafire.com/?mlzbtnidnmh)
Only SA normal difficulty.
No C here. It ate too much process for my brain. I'll keep study more and more ouch.

I feel compelled to ask whether this will have a video series
Not likely unless someone is willing to do the recording

It's pretty challenging to make playable laser-only cards.
I'm almost done with my entry, don't expect anything too fancy :V
-
So Blargel...
I'd still like to know whether my entry is fine the way it is or not, because two of the attacks feature lasers one may consider too bullet-esque. If you told me now, I would be able to still whip out another spellcard or two to replace the card(s) in question, but tomorrow I may not have enough time to get them done before the deadline...
:o

I seriously haven't downloaded anything in this thread yet and my internet is being terrible. A general guideline I guess would be that the laser is 3 times longer than it is wide or more. You can PM me a screenshot or something if you want because I'm not going to be downloading anything until judging day.

Okaay, I'll attach screens of the two cards to this post. Note that the lasers in the second one don't move, they just appear and fade away again.

EDIT: And more time, but Blargel isn't going to extend the deadline to FOREVER.

First card ever made, and for this contest. Hope its ok.

This is Iddyea, a fairy who lives in my subconscious (seriously). She talks to me in dreams and gives me small suggestions even if I'm awake. She said that she was sad because nobody believed that she was real since there was no proof, but I'm either too nice or too insane, so I do. So I started working on this contest, but I didn't know who to make the boss. When I went to bed that night, I had a dream about these patterns - so I made them.
It comes with two scripts with four difficulties each. Subconscious "Labyrinth of the Mind" is my main entry, while Dream "Multichromatic Trance" is more of an extra (though I still want it graded of course). Lunatic might be a tad much (I don't play on that difficulty yet, so it's hard to balance for it), so I suggest starting on Hard or lower. And as one more note, both patterns are semi-random, but they're always possible - you might occasionally get a really hard section, but that's part of the fun.

Holy freak. I sense relationships between Iddeia イッヂェア Iddyea and Mitori/Koishi.
EDIT: Also, I see some hint of Iku in the picture. I must be losing my mind.
EDIT: And some Kasane Teto! Holy freak.

Oh my god, Azure.
This script is BEAUTIFUL in both animation and danmaku.
You have serious skills, man.

Haven't played the script, but I have to mention that usually your fairy designs kind of creep me out, but this one is fairly cool.

Holy crap at that fractal. I was pleased with the maths in my spellcard and then I see this?!? :(
Are we allowed to include any music in the submission? Got a nice satori one I downloaded that works well. I Tried to mix my own track then found out im missing a driver I need write the mp3 (and I cant do any downloading for the rest of the month) :/ ah well.
Either way got a submission pretty much ready, just dunno whether to package it with the track or not.
I'll give everyone elses a shot when the month starts (and comp ends). looking forward to azure's mad sounding one and the fractalicous one.

As much as I want to say no music (because of my horrendous internet), that wouldn't be very nice because sometimes music improves the mood of the script a lot. Just try to keep the file size reasonable.

Well, Azure, I played your script, and it's awesomely good and fun to do
The only problem I saw, was exactly the player's view during it; everything is too bright
I use ReimuA (Homming Shots) for most scripts I play, and I gotta say it was pretty blinding, especially with her big ammulets
I think that the greenish BG kindda makes it worse..
Well, apart from this, it's great! I loved the way the SC's tittle apears <3
-
Use a character that doesn't use so many add-blended overlapping shots. ReimuA makes everything hard to see in every script; it's not a problem with mine specifically (though it might make it slightly worse).
Thanks for the comments on it, everyone. It's good to know my little dream fairy is getting some attention!
-
Go Azure, and go Iddyea! I hope you do well! :D
-
...define "reasonable"
My download speed is around 40KB/s. Don't make me wait more than half an hour.
-
ReimuA makes everything hard to see in every script; it's not a problem with mine specifically (though it might make it slightly worse).
This is effect is worsened by one of the main problems posed by the contest's limitation:
Every single thing that tries to kill the player must be a laser. Turning a regular bullet into a laser forces the render type of the graphic to change to ADD. Everything glows, so overlapping patterns become increasingly hard to read. ReimuA turns this general problem up to overkill, not just in Azure's script.
If you really want to have a homing shot type, you could use my Suika player. [/shameless advertising] :V
-

Fair point, If I had the driver I needed to cut down the music (and more than 5mb of my months internet left that I could download it, lol) Then I'd have cut the music file down and then added it.
But since I haven't, And therefore can't, adding an 8mb 5 min long file for the sake of 60 seconds of play doesn't seem justified. I can understand your situation with limited net, im in it :V
Recall sign - Shattered memories
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YPUG20VU
Theres my upload, roughly 874kb, got custom SFX and grafics. Graphics are shameless cut from one of my other projects as I didn't have time to make a new character or BG. Ah well, they seem to work alright. Except the cut in. Dunno why it glitches.
Come on new month, I wanna download some peoples scripts!

I don't think there's any way I'll get my second card figured out before the deadline, so I'll just submit my entry now. (http://www.mediafire.com/?mcwt3zqgji3)
Containment "Starburst Laser" is my entry; I didn't get far enough along with the other one's testing to finish it. My thanks to Legend_Bird in #danmakufu for helping with the sinuate laser.
-
My entry~ It's Merlin's turn to have some fun~ Merlin's Play Time (http://www.mediafire.com/?uyikyjnzjmz) No curvy lasers for Merlin thought, I couldn't come up with any.
EDIT:Fixed entry~
-
afasd 5 hours left workworkwork
-
With this message I give up, even If I wouldn?t have to go to school tommorow, I wouldn?t be able to finish this in the next few hours (I forgot if it ends here, where I live, at 23:00 or 01:00).
-
I'd just submit what you can. Better to have an imcomplete submission than none at all.

Finally! After a whole week and two weekends of code wrestling I'm finally done this thing.
Get ready for the GenieGoose! (http://www.mediafire.com/?qrzeyi3wnzg)

6 hours late to announce that the contest is now closed. I will be spending the next few hours just downloading the damn entries. You can expect the results in maybe two or three days.
EDIT: For some inexplicable reason, I cannot download the following files from MediaFire:
-Kayorei- Laser Light Show Entry.rar
Contest #4 Laser Light Show (Bark).rar
GlowingLightOrb 2.zip
Merlin Lazer Challenge.RAR
Suikamahaha.rar
MediaFire just times out before even starting the download. I have everyone else's entries and will start with those while waiting for either MediaFire to stop being stupid, or a mirror of the files.
EDIT: Nevermind, got someone on IRC to mirror it for me (thanks ChaoStar).

I lied. Done judging. First, my reactions, impressions, and general criticism of everyone's entries.
Bark
The first attack has very nice design. The way the lasers spawn makes cool patterns and overall its difficulty doesn't feel cheap. The second attack felt kind of claustrophobic. Spaces seemed a bit small but I got used to it later. It got kind of boring then since you just find a small space every time. The final attack is pretty boring til the 3rd part. Then it feels extremely cheap. Superspeed lasers are generally a bad idea and the curvy lasers that were going in and out give no particular warning that they will actually go back in, causing me to run into them multiple times at the edge of the screen. Not a bad entry overall, but not exceptional either.
AweStrikerNova
Despite warnings from me and other people, you still didn't package the shot replace script with your script. It errored on me from a missing shot replace script so you are disqualified.
Hoppefrosk
What in the world am I fighting? Your first attack has a nice effect with the red lasers, but it's ridiculously cheap how the blue lasers just trap you while it spawns on top of you. If you didn't spawn every laser based off the player's position but only first one and then the rest are based off the first laser's position, that would've helped. Second attack was pretty boring until the lasers came in from the top. But it was still pretty easy. Your last attack on the other hand is ridiculously hard, mostly because of how all the other lasers cover the warning laser that two lasers are about to spawn right on top of me. When the whole screen gets covered in that design, my framerate drops ridiculously too. On the plus side, that design is interesting and I wonder how you made it. I'll need to look at your script in the near future.
Azure
Holy shit. Custom cut-ins, custom fonts, custom sprites, custom sound effects, custom background... pretty much as customized as you can get! All your effects are super cool and eyegasmic and I actually spent a good minute with invincibility on just watching your spellcard background.
Labryrinth of the Mind is really fun to play despite the simiplicity of the idea. However, the randomness at the end does throw some pretty unfair things at your if you're unlucky. (I swear random number generators hate me.) Multichromatic Trance however is rather plain danmaku-wise. It just feels like random spam, although it is rather pretty random spam because of your custom everything. One thing to nitpick about is the fact that I use MarisaA and your boss running around all over the screen doesn't exactly make it easy to hit it.
Kayorei
The first thing that I noticed after the custom sprite was that the lasers weren't very pretty looking. Lasers generally look better if you just use the default Danmakufu ones or a sprite sheet specifically made for additive blending. Anyways, moving on to the danmaku. First attack is a neat idea and pretty well executed. However, the 4 lasers that spawn on the boss that rotate seem kinda random and out of place. The second attack caught me off guard. About 5 times. Another nice idea, but it feels more full of cheap shots. At one point, the big laser the boss shot at me blocked off my escape route while one of the yellow lasers fell on me. The third attack is a super cheap shot. The glow effect gives the illusion that you can't go past them without getting killed. Then you realize this isn't true when the lasers rotate into you. When I tried again, I was cheap shotted by the sudden extending of the lasers.
Iryan
Haha, Walfas cutins. I've gotta say that the first attack doesn't really look like it belongs with the other two attacks. It's pretty plain and rather boring compared to the rest of the entry. Your second attack is just plain awesome though. I liked how it got increasingly hectic as more and more lasers lingered around. The final attack is a fractal. A freaking fractal. I always thought that doing a fractal with danmaku would be pretty cool but I took the time to think about how to make one, and here you are turning it into dodgeable danmaku at the same time. The double fractal was ridiculous at the end and my brain just sorta froze up when I realized two were spawning at once. And then the lasers grew around me while I was stationary and I didn't die lololol.
Demonbman
Okay first off, that background is terrible for a laser only contest. Lasers being additively blended, the brighter the background is, the harder it is to see the laser. Second, the difficulty of the whole script isn't on the scale of Easy, Normal, Hard, or Lunatic. It's not Extra or Phantasm. It's pretty much just cheapshot bullshit. The first attack pretty much proves my point as I died and bombed a ridiculously number of times just to get through it. The second attack doesn't seem to have any visible way to get past the giant rotating lasers and meanwhile merlin shoots godspeed lasers randomly about. You probably should've thought things through a bit more.
GBZero
A pretty short entry and pretty simple one too. All I had to do was move right and left over and over. Meanwhile the boss goes back and forth all over the place, making it impossible for my straight shooting MarisaA to get a good shot at him. Not too much to say here.
Nimble
Holy crap that's hard. But your stuff is always hard as hell for me so I don't know why I was expecting anything less than that. The first attack's lasers that spawn lasers completely caught me off guard and I immediately died. However the idea was pretty good, though probably done in a different way before. It felt familiar somehow. The second attack is actually something I can play. Another pretty good idea and executed nicely. The final attack is just all sorts of bullshit. I don't even know where to start except to ask if you can actually capture that attack yourself. Overall a good entry if not extremely difficult.
rdj522
I chuckled a little at the "Didn't quite turn out the way I wanted to..." in the description of the cards. Then I got an error stating that "null is not defined (line 10)" on Pong Laser, causing you to be disqualified. Starburst Laser is relatively easy if you just stream sideways a bit too. Hmmm, I wonder how the spellcards looked in your mind because these two aren't very exceptional.
Shockman
Hmmm, I'm not sure what I'm fighting for this entry either. Anyways, the danmaku has some pretty neat concepts, but because of the additive blending of lasers, some things were hard to see and just killed me. The first attack's purple lasers, for example, just covered up the raining red lasers, making it extremely hard to see if a red laser was about to hit me or not. The second attack is extremely simple, however. All you need to do is stream slowly left and right while making a gap to go between every so often. The laser attack's sudden change in pace surprised me, but I managed to stay alive for a while. I noticed it was pretty hard to see where the lines were sometimes and I died once or twice because of that. Not a bad entry.
Stuffman
Hahaha, joined the contest a bit too late? Looks like you only had time for the danmaku design, and no time for balance or extra touches. The first attack is pretty fun with all it's stuff flying everywhere, but it felt like something was missing. Not sure what though. The second attack scared me to death for the wave. I wasn't sure what to do and ran to the corner where the other giant lasers spawned. This second attack seemed kind of unfair too since the giant lasers pushed you down into the spawn location of the smaller ones. It got a little too close for comfort and gave me no time to react to small lasers. Or maybe my reaction time just sucks. For the third attack, the way the lasers spawn is a super cool effect, but when the danmaku starts reaching my player, I'm pretty much just cursing at the tiny spaces and dying multiple times. This probably could've been a great entry if you had more time.
Suikama
40MB? Why do you always have ridiculous file sizes for your entries?
*Judge is playing. Please wait warmly*
...What the hell just happened? Musically timed lasers... Well let's just comment on the danmaku design and ignore everything else. :V
You have a lot of generic danmaku being thrown around. Aimed lasers, laser crisscrosses, randomized spawn locations, etc. Pretty much everything is just generic except that it is timed to the music. Not perfectly because my computer never runs Danmakufu at a perfect 60 fps, but I got the idea anyway. If the images didn't make me question your mental state during its creation, I might have considered this a decent entry. But instead if just disturbs me.
Torpedo
First of all, make your zip files contain a folder with everything in it. For a few seconds, I was wondering who named their project folder Graphic and sfx. Second, shooting stuff at the player when the cut in is still on the screen is probably a bad idea. The graphics look nice and the sprite is nicely animated. The background fits the character too obviously. However, the danmaku is boring. It is extremely simple to beat just by running away as fast as you can. There isn't much to say for this attack except that it has pretty nice graphics.
MewKyuu
Oh hey an animated sprite. Your first attack is pure streaming which is pretty boring. Your second one is ALMOST pure streaming. The purple lasers tend to spawn way too close to me sometimes and make it impossible to read where the gaps are. The third attack is utter bullshit with its giant lasers. Unless you played it before, you have no idea where the giant lasers will spawn. Even when you do remember where to move, the giant lasers cover the smaller ones and makes it way too hard to see where to dodge.

Hmmm, the danmaku is pretty generic. It also feels like that the main body of the attack can be replaced with bullets instead of lasers and it would feel almost exactly the same. The lasers near the end really don't have any point either since most people won't be moving around wildly. Not really your best work.
And now the rankings!
First Place: Iryan
Except for the first attack, the other two attacks are both mathematically impressive from a scripting point of view and fun to play from a player's point of view.
Second Place: Azure
Most graphically impressive entry, but graphics are really icing on the cake. Iryan has two fun spellcards in his entry while this one has one.
Third Place: Nimble
Despite being extremely difficult, the script had very unique ideas. At least it isn't as hard as your Dead Simple entry anyway. :V
Now let's go make that full game in a week contest! :V
-
Yea! Let's make 7 stages (ex included) within a week. !!!!!! Maybe not.
Oh congratulations winners and ranked 2nd / 3rd. I'll leave the thread stickied for 48 hours or so so people can brag and such :V
-
Congratulations to Iryan, Azure and Nimble for their winning entries, and a "better luck next time" to all other participants.
I use MarisaA
Fuck yes Marisa, boo Reimu
Now let's go make that full game in a week contest! :V
Do not know if want. Player contest would be ballin'.
I'll have to play all these scripts, only downloaded a few so far. They sound awesome. Props to Blargel for being a beast and hosting his own contest and judging so fast!
-
Oh man, I can't wait to get home so I can play all of these. Congrats to the contestants, and especially the winners! \o/
-
I figured as much; Pong Laser wasn't even finished and I have no clue why I left it in the folder. Danmakufu just isn't for me, I guess.
Congrats to everyone who participated!
-
Well, i knew that my entry wasn't good. I don't really like working with lasers anyway, and even less with lasers only.
-

GAHHHH...wait.
I figured out the problem. That "person on IRC" (not naming names...)... gave you the non-shot-replace-included version. If you had gotten MF to work properly, that wouldn't have been a problem.
So technically, it's not entirely my fault...
In the future (since Mediafire appears to be bugging up occasionally) so this doesn't happen again, how do I attach files to posts?
-
There was an absolute filepath issue anyway.
It didn't work until I put the replace in the main danmakafu folder.

Speaking of which Naut, I made this contest 'cause you were bugging me about wanting to join a contest. Where the hell is your entry? I mean...
It's not like I hosted this entire contest just for you! I was just doing this because you were so annoying! I wasn't looking forward to playing your entry or anything! ...Baka! *runs off*

I linked the "person on IRC" directly to your mediafire link that you posted latest. It was not his fault. Either you reuploaded the same one by accident or you still messed up somehow. Anyway, to attach a file to a post, you can click on the "Additional Options..." button while posting and some more things will pop up, including a field to attach files.

Actually, I totally expected Azure to win. :V
Congratulations to him (or her? I don't know) and Nimble, and thanks to everyone for making scripts. It was definitely fun to play through them all. :D
Also props to Blargel for highspeed judging skills!

Well, I was judging mainly by danmaku design. If her second spellcard were as creative and fun as the maze one, she would've won hands down. And of course I'm not a Yama with the ability to judge danmaku quality at a glance and was kicked out of Higan for having too useless of a skill so I spend most of my time just looking and critiquing other people's Danmakufu scripts. Definitely not.
-
Well, I said the first one was my main entry and the second was just for fun. Can't argue with second place, though, considering I did this in less than a week. All the effects (cutins, bullet graphics, text, etc) are taken from my main project, not made specifically for this - I overdo effects, but not that much, heh.
Good to know mine was the prettiest, at least. I guess that counts for something, right?
-
There was an absolute filepath issue anyway.
It didn't work until I put the replace in the main danmakafu folder.
Oh, I must have forgot to have done it for one or two of the cards. Did you try running them individually?

Because we know who he is, Blargel even thanked him specifically in an earlier post. :V
-
If the images didn't make me question your mental state during its creation, I might have considered this a decent entry. But instead if just disturbs me.
hurr :ohdear:
Next contest should be making a script with Musuu no Danmaku :V
-
Today, I actually played my entry through! (Along with everyone else's.)
I just wanna say, about the spellcard in my entry, there's a "safespot" like thing where you can just graze the fat lasers, and just tap left/right to avoid the yellow lasers.
EDIT: SUNEO!
EDTI: You forgot to say my entry sucked. :(
-
There's something about tsundere programmers that's just so hnnngh :<
Remember Azure, danmaku is all about beauty and elegance! Of course it counts for something!
-
I'll play some tonight If I've got time, Glad to hear my graphics were enjoyed lol.
Admitedly I know what you mean though, I was going left and right to dodge it most of the time but kept thinking "its more fun to try and graze inside the shatters" Maybe I should have figured a way to trap the player. I dunno, I was running out of time and didn't have anymore ideas lol.
-
(continuing my previous post, since I did that one in the five minutes between classes)
If her second spellcard were as creative and fun as the maze one, she would've won hands down.
So by logical extension, if the contest was just a single spellcard instead of a max of 3, I also would have won? Yay! And as for moving around too much and being hard to hit, the trick is to just ignore her and stay in the center. She spends most of the time centered in both scripts, so there's no need to follow her.
I would like to take this time to give thanks to everyone that helped me - especially Raibys who helped with the graphics and gave me support the whole time, Iddyea who lives in my head and came up with the danmaku in the first place, Manaphy who is cute and squishy and blue, and everyone in #danmakufu for helping me with everything I had problems with during the creation process.

Congratulation to Iryan, Azure and ..... =A=!
Gau...
I still can't capture Crisis Decision too. Sometime I get hit by red/green laser in the middle of the card. But most mistake done by yellow-aiming trap me.
Bigger cage much more better ouch*
I sware, if the next contest was danmaku pattern. I'll make it be acceptable in difficulty oTL~
-
you're welcome blargel-sama. Anyway, as the idea was floating around, player character contest? :V :V :V
-
The first thing that I noticed after the custom sprite was that the lasers weren't very pretty looking. Lasers generally look better if you just use the default Danmakufu ones or a sprite sheet specifically made for additive blending.
Huh, not sure what you mean there. The only things that I used that weren't default were the sprite and the cutin.
I would never have thought the second one was much of a cheap shot; in fact, I was sure it was the easiest one. I... was actually afraid the third one might have been a bit cheap, but I thought the trick to it was sort of obvious. All this tells me is that I need to get some proper playtesters.
Ah well. Wasn't expecting much of this. It was interesting, either way. Congrats to the winners.

I lied. Done judging. First, my reactions, impressions, and general criticism of everyone's entries.
You probably should've thought things through a bit more.
ahahaha yeash....
The way to get around the giant rotation lasers is to go through the base!
The background...well....:X I really didnt just want to use just the music sheet as a background, and I guess I thought that I've created and played the script so many times that I know what to do.
From now I I'll think in the way of the person whos played the script for the first time! That way no more Cheapshot Bullshit!

Damn, things are happening fast for this contest. Fast judging and then a little less than a day later we have videos.
-
...The odd coincidences these things can produce...
Iryan's "Wave Theory of Light" looks remarkably like my "Color Spray", right down to the cone... granted, mine doesn't have all that certain-death stuff outside said cone. And for some reason Wave Theory seems to have a bit more order to it...
And that last spellcard "Pythagoras Tree"... just... whoa.
-
Was kinda hoping Iryan's Octavarium card would actually sync to Dream Theater :V
24 minutes of fuck year
-
Videos, I enjoyed them. And I was quite under the impression from Iryan's Pythagoras tree. That was simply amazing.
-
Well, that looks amazing, but it's kind of boring to dodge, honestly. (But hey, one of my spellcards was like that, so who am I to judge?)
-
I think it should be enforced that in each contest Nimble should continue to make the last card borderline impossible, and that Naut should be forced to capture it each time.

Well you are already one of the better graphic/effect designers. We cannot all have all stats maxed out ( well you can but takes practise ).
I have the same thing, my math / pattern abilities are low while graphic and eye-candy things are high. We have to deal with it. orz.
Which is currently the problem I am having with my own game. I have so many ideas, but little knowledge on how to turn them into a spell card.

Most of Azure's stats seem quite high though. :V
I'd say I'm almost maxed out in the logic stat (which is closely related to the math stat but not quite the same). You tell me what behavior you want, and I can probably make it. On the other hand, my graphics/effects stat is damn close to 0.

Is there going to be a stat tier list? :V

That is what I believed to be one of the reasons my script wouldn't win: The tree looks good but is rather uninteresting gameplay-wise. I tried multiple ways of making the fractal spawn and fade away, and this one was the best option I could find. :V

Obviously by how much experience you have. Get more experience and you get a higher level! Of course, the later levels have such ridiculous exp requirements that it takes way too long to level up. I doubt anyone has made it to level 100 yet.

Suikama:

-
but how do we calculate how much experience we have/get?
Experience = ((Time spent learning new things in Danmakufu) * 25) + (Time spent using Danmakufu) .
Unfortunately, I don't have an experience chart so I can't tell you how much experience you need to level up. :V
-
If you really want to level up faster, you need to quest more. After you've reached mid-level, the experience you gather when completing a quest chain just flat outclasses anything you would accomplish through mere grinding.
PvP helps, too, but only if you actually play to win. And don't get me started on danmakufu raiding...
-
Can't you also join parties so that you could level up faster with other people? (and even fight other parties with your party...)
-
Once you get too high level, you run out of quests to do though and it kinda just gets boring. I don't really like the instances or raids either so I only do them every so often when I'm REALLY bored. I spend most of my time in the newbie areas helping people for no apparent reason or hanging around the main town and just chatting with people.
Also, good parties are kinda hard to get into. Either there's an established usual party that people don't want new people joining or else it'll just split the exp rewards too much, or you get a party that's just terrible and doesn't know what it's doing. I find it easier just to train on your own unless you really really need help with one of the quest objectives.
I sense a thread locking due to being wildly off topic now.

It will probably be unsticked in due time, and then whatever else we do with it doesn't matter V:<

Would Naut mind if I uploaded videos of the disqualified ones? Of course that Pong card had to be removed due to it not working. If he doesn't want those uploaded either by anyone, I'll respect that.

Some of these quests have a requirement called "creativity". How do I increase that stat?
Last stat joke. Creativity is a hidden stat that you can't see on your status screen. Although it is influenced by your Design stat and your level, it is actually randomized on a day by day basis. If your Creativity appears to be too low on one day for the quest, you can try again the next day.

Actually, don't: For some reason this causes everything to become invisible

Stuffman you little freak, your script didn't have the ex-Rumia graphic in its folder! I make different script folders for these contests, so I was stuck fighting invisi-Rumia. :V
-
The path leads to where EX Rumia is by default, you must have deleted it/renamed it/moved it.
You should always leave the default Rumia stuff in place so people can use her image if they don't want to include their own!
-
Which of course means your script was not self-contained.
Besides, it was agreed during the first contest that people using Ex-rumia should keep the relevant images inside their own script, much like shotsheets and such.
-
It didn't error, doesn't matter. Not like Stuffman's script was aesthetically pleasing anyway, regarding anything but danmaku.
-
Pft doesn't matter, I'm not a mod anymore so I don't need to set good examples :V

That logic is about the same as "I can go molest small children in public because I'm not the president anymore." :V

Non-self-contained scripts: On the same level as child molestation.
Welcome to Rika's Garage! o/

Damn straight.

Welcome to Rika's Garage! \o/
And seeing as there are many people here who post (or have posted) not-self-contained scripts (*cough* Survival contest *cough*), you can deduce about how many people in here should statistically be child molesters.
:o
Yeah, I know that this is flawed logic. I don't care[/i]

Nobu had flawed logic as well since I was actually comparing the logical flow of the statements: not moderators to presidents and scripts to possible child molestation.
-
Can I be in the small font club too
-
Kogasa is pretty cute
-
Aya stop staring at me like that...(didn't start to code again, leave me a break)

Stop talking in such small letters.....

My flawed logic is perfect and unquestionable >:|

Thanks, Iryan. Now if everyone will just start talking in big letters.

Okay this is Rika's Garage, not CPMC. Enough idiocy. Someone lock this thread.
