Title: random touhou Qs (may contain noob ones)
Post by: Momizi Inubashiri on May 31, 2009, 04:58:55 AM
i have played touhou for meny years now (1st started when the Imperishable Night was a demo)
anyways there are a few things i never gotten from the games and here is what i have to ask.

1) is Yukari the "ganon" of the touhou world? if not then who? if any
2) is the song (夜が降りてくる ~ Evening Star) Yukaris theme song or is it (Necrofantasia)
3) why did Yuyuko try to bloom a tree in Perfect Cherry Blossom?
4) whos theme song is the song (Demystify Feast)
5) when you "defeat" someone in a touhou game, what happends to them? *i know they dont die or get knocked out because they talk to you after you "defeat" them*
6) why does it seem like the song (永夜の報い ~ Imperishable Night) seems to be remixed into alot of other Touhou game after Imperishable Night's, mainmenu song? *lison to U.F.Os mainmenu and you will see what i mean*

thats all i can think of so far

thanks for answering

1) No, and no one.
2) Both, although I like to think of Evening Star as her theme since Necrofantasia is a remix of Ran's theme.
3) She wanted to see who sealed it.
4) No one's, it plays on the day before the feast in IaMP.
5) They're just defeated in a perfectly safe spellcard battle.
6) PCB's was like that too by the way, and they're all arranges of the Seihou Shuusou Gyoku extra stage theme. As for the question, no clue. :x It's a very fitting title theme though.

wow thankyou heres more that i thot of

7) why is Subterranean Animism and Shoot the Bullet ridiculously hard (even on easy)
8 ) why did Zun make the touhou games harder after Imperishable Night? (i like 5 live 5 continues (and wen you die you dont have to start the dam stage over DX))

1) No. It isn't even specified if Yukari created Gensokyo. It's more than likely she's essential for Gensokyo's continued existence, though.
2) Both of them are. Necrofantasia was her theme in PCB, and Evening Star in IaMP.
3) Again, it's up to fans to interpret it. Although, the tree, Saigyou Ayakashi, was an evil magician. Yuyuko was that magician before she died.
4) Nobody's. It plays with whoever you fight against before Yukari in IaMP's story mode.
5) Danmaku is nonlethal, although the game rules are a bit fuzzy. Once you run out of spell cards, you lose. It's essentially a forfeit, as most people in Gensokyo could battle so powerfully it would cause disaster. Spell cards were created for that exact reason.
6) The main menu theme is continuous throughout the series. It's just remade in every game.

7) It's ZUN.
8) It's ZUN.

Just in case you haven't seen it yet:  http://touhou.wikia.com/
This'll answer many of your questions.

Anyway...

1)  What's "ganon"?
2)  Necrofantasia.  [Edit:  In PCB]
3)  The tree, the Saigyou Ayakashi, is a youkai tree and doesn't bloom.  Yuyuko tried to make it bloom like the rest of her gardens.
4)  Yuyuko in IaMP
5)  Usually Reimu has a tea party with them.  No, no one actually dies in Touhou games.
6)  [Edit:  Nevermind]

[Edit:  Dang you guys respond fast!]

7 and 8) IN is probably the easiest standard-fare Touhou game, Zun probably felt he needed to make things distinctively harder for people.  And he definitely succeeded with SA.

7 & 8 : Increased beer consumption, and someone circling around the death fairy right before the boss in IN's extra stage

1. "Key-neh Kah-mee-shee-rah-sah-wah"
2. In Japanese, "Chee-roo-no"
3. It's French for Flanders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders), I think it goes sort've like "Flah-n-druh"
3. "Kee-ree-sah-meh"
4. "Oh-noh-zoo-kah"
5. (Water)Melon Cauli(flower)
6. "Pah-choo-lee"

10. "Sah-ee-gyoh-jee"

hes the last boss in about every zelda game.
Can you believe I've never played Zelda? =<

SHE A TREE O_O
No, her dead body had been used to seal the tree, which was trying to lure people to sleep beneath it and kill them.  In Japanese mythology, anything can become a "youkai", even inanimate objects.  See here (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Saigyou_Ayakashi) and here (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Youkai).

And yeah, she's actually a ghost in the Touhou games.

As for Gensokyo, it apparently is located withing the Yatsugatake Mountains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yatsugatake_Mountains).  Of course, even if you find the real-life Hakurei Jinja, you won't be able to enter Gensokyo.  See here (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Gensokyo).

I pretty much made all my pronunciations by the way I saw them spelled, which I am 100% positive that most of them are incorrect.

e.g

Cirno = Sir - no
Keine = Key - en (I refuse to pronounce that one in any other way actually)

and a bunch of others I cant think of right now
Title: Re: random touhou Qs (may contain noob ones)
Post by: Helepolis on May 31, 2009, 01:26:30 PM
I loled at Sir - no.

In the Touhou M-1 GP 3rd they pronounce Keine as: Kay - neh. Which comes close to wrathies post. Though each language has its own tones/sound for pronouncing letters. For example for a dutchy like me, Key is pronounced as 'Kii'. Chi-ru-no pronounced in dutch would be Girno.

>.< I think the turkish language would be far better. To make the japanese pronounciation correct Turkish people have to change the c to ?  <-- makes 'Ch' sound like in japanese (?irno).

3. weird tree rules state that what she did was the only way; stupid zun story is stupid
5. ever had a friendly fight with someone? that; also they may very well faint after you leave, who knows
6. ask manabu namiki
7. for one, shoot the bullet has no "easy mode"; they're hard because they needed to be
8. put your lives back to 3 and stop using continues

My interpretation of "what danmaku is," apart from being a magical martial art, is that creating little bullets of magical energy is really easy to do, and can be done no matter what kind of "magic" you use. I base this on the fact that literally everyone in the games can do it, regardless of how powerful they are (the first enemy in stage 1, versus Yukari) or what "type" of magic they use (Marisa uses "destructive magic", Sanae uses the power of the gods, Yumemi uses some sort of magical technology, etc). You can also create danmaku-"copies" of objects, too (Sakuya's knives, Reisen's bullets, Keine's knife-thingies). I made a more detailed analysis here (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=danmaku).

I totally agree. I think there's something about the state of matter in Gensokyo itself that makes this and flying possible.

Edgy how? (The fourth-wall-breaking bits which provide an in-character reason to call someone a "stage-4 midboss"?) I admit the primary purpose was to fit with my comic, but any better ideas would be appreciated ...

Ok my previous post was bullshit but if you look at it:

I guess danmaku also requires strong mental powers/strenght. As you know most spellcards are not just spreaded but have patterns. So martial arts would be indeed fitting as it focusses both physical and mental control.
Not to mention to control those familiars.

I'm sorry, but I must bring this back up

1) is Yukari the "ganon" of the touhou world? if not then who? if any

While, in theory, Yukari is the most powerful Youkai in Gensokyo, she isn't about to take control of some mystic power in posession of a boy and a princess.

However...

The similairities are startling!!!

Yeah, but look at Utsuho =/.

Anyways, I got a question,

Let's say Koishi randomly stumbles into one of those dream worlds from the PC-98 games, like Mugenkan, or Gengetu's/Mugetu's dream world that they created. Since Koishi has the power to manipulate the sub-consciousness, does this mean that she could either change the entire realm, or even destroy it in an instance?

Inbe4Koishihax..

anyways, each person's interpretation is different.

My theory mostly consists of it being an innate ability, drawn from the magicks/mana/faith in gensokyo itself. Being drawn from their own makeup as a youkai the generate bullets as self defense...

Question:

Answering these two.

Gensokyo was created as a haven for the Youkai to roam. That's what it was intended for. Thanks to Yukari, it's now separated from the rest of the world due to the fact that since the Youkai were terrorizing the surrounding regions, humans were exterminating the Youkai to prevent this.

Actually guys can use magic as well. It's just that you don't ever see them use it. Rinnosuke doesn't use it as well because he just doesn't have any fighting abilities whatsoever. Youki, Youmu's father, surely uses magic though being Yuyuko's previous gardener and guardian and all.

My question:

What would happen if I ate a miniature Suika? Would it taste like a watermelon covered in alcohol?
Are Flandre's wings made out of sugar?

No and no. They would most likely taste like people, and the wings would taste like glass =/.

Q: We all know girls use danmaku. Though are the knives Sakuya uses also danmaku? Or regular knife objects. And if so, where does she keeps all those knives.

Remember that when she runs out of knives, she simply stops time just to retrieve them again. She doesn't a godly amount =/. But I agree that some of them are located in the pouch under her skirt.

Q: How come the oversized ribbons some characters have (Mokou , Reimu) Always stay in perfect shape and straight without bending fall. What happened to gravity?

Q: How do the girls keep their cloths clean and colorful? What washingpowder they use?

Gensokyo. They defied the laws of gravity by flying themselves, so this isn't too surprising =/. But how they keep it up without forcing it whatsoever is probably due to some kind of spell casted on them. It's how Mokou keeps her pants from burning =/.

So in this case that's probably how they clean their clothing or keep them clean during battles without any damage on them whatsoever.

It gets lost in unknown space which Yukari controls. If the gap closes you cannot move anymore from your current location. So you can basicly be stuck in the air. Some gaps are connected so when you stick your hand in one it can appear trough the other.

Though always "mind the gap"

Well, let's see Category:Characters on the Touhou wiki!

Alice, Chiyuri, Elis, Ellen (might not count -- ZUN got her from another series), Elly, Flandre, Gengetu, Kana Anaberal, Kurumi, Lily, Luize, Luna Child, Lunasa, Maribel, Marisa, Medicine, Mugetu, Parsee, Ran, Rumia, Shizuha, Sunny Milk, Suwako, Toyohime, Yamame, Yumeko, Yumemi, Yuugi. That's 28, or 27 if you don't count Fluffy Ellen.

So I've been playing for what.. 3 weeks now? Anyway, I've played thru esod, pcb, and in. I've tried the phantasmogria of flower view or whatever its called... Interesting, but it should be considered a x.5 touhou game than a x.0 imo, so it doesn't really count for what I'm about to ask.

I've noticed some patterns in the touhou games, I'm wondering if they hold thru for the rest of the series (rest being later, not neccesarily before)... you know, kind of like how final fantasy games always have an engineer or mechanic named cid?

1: Are all the main enemies of each touhou game always of the same race? Seems like esod they are all vampires, in pcb they are all ghosts (half ghost counts noob), IN, they are all animal-women, etc. Ice fairies and such don't count, they have nothing to do with the dillema of the story. Sakuya doesn't count either. Remila said it herself in IN >=p.

2: does the stage 5 boss always break the mechanics of the game in some way? esod, timestop, pcb, slomo, IN..uhh.. stupid red eyes of make things go backwards or turn invisible or whatever. I still don't really understand it lol.

3: Is level 1 and 2 always easy, level 3 medium, and level4+ always "you better memorize at least some parts of this level or you WILL die/bomb"

4: does every touhou game have 1 and only 1 "death fairy" somewhere in the game?

5: does the extra boss always have at lest 1 attack that must be timed out?

thought I had more but that's all I can think of atm.

What do the Komeiji's like to eat?

My pe- *shot*

I'm guessing whatever they sell underground, although I assume that it's not too different from what the humans eat on the surface.

1. No. Pay attention to them. Only Remilia and Flandre are vampires in EoSD. Sakuya is human, Patchouli is a witch youkai, Meiling and Rumia are youkai, and Cirno is an Ice fairy.

In PCB, only Yuyuko, the Prismrivers, and Youmu are ghosts (Youmu is a half-ghost. Yes it is different). Yukari is one of the "main enemies" as well, and she's a youkai =/.

In IN, NOT EVERYONE IS ANIMAL-YOUKAI. Only Wriggle (bug), Mystia (Night-Sparrow), Keine (were-hakutaku), Tewi and Reisen (Rabbits) are animals youkai. Eirin and Kaguya and Lunarians. Mokou is immortal.

2. No. Although I didn't think of that. But Sanae isn't related in that way, nor is Orin (but is broken in terms of difficulty =/).

3. Uhh...isn't that how it's SUPPOSED to be?

4. I don't think every Touhou game has a death fairy in IN. MoF and SA doesn't have one, neither does PCB.

Or maybe I wasn't paying too much attention =/

5. Yes.

As I said, ice fairies don't count, and my definition of vampire is loose. I mean youkai that eats humans or consumes something human. Both rumia and patch talk about eating humans in the game don't they? Mind you the stage 3 boss is in league with remila isn't she? Forgot about her.

Yukari I didn't count cuz she's in the extra stage (same with ran). Chen is an exception I suppose but she has nothing to do with the cherry blossom thievery, so she's somewhat like the ice fairy situation.

As for IN, the extra stage boss doesn't count again. Eirin and Kaguya, well I don't think they look like bunny-people other than reisen. BUT. when you beat the game and such, they frequently refer to the whole group as bunnies or rabbits or something. So I was a bit confused.

PCB has a death fairy just before the prismriver boss. I don't remember where in IN, but I could have sworn there was one somewhere.

Oh yes I forgot about the death fairy in Stage 4. And yes, IN does have one in EX stage, right before Mokou.

Still I forgot if MoF and SA has one. I haven't played them too much.

MoF's Death Fairy is the one just before Kanako.

In SA, Every fairy is a death fairy I'm not sure it counts, but there's the two Particle-Wave Orbs before Utsuho's fight.

Pretty much what happens is, Stages 1 and 2 are easy, in Stage 3 things get interesting, and then you get to Stage 4 - the F*ck You Stage - where you finally meet the boss who reveals to you who's behind whatever incident you're investigating. The TV Tropes page on Touhou (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Touhou) is actually really helpful for covering a lot of the common themes and occurences in the games.

A youkai is a pretty well-defined thing in Japanese mythology (see here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y%C5%8Dkai)).  They don't have anything to do with vampires, for one who originate in eastern European mythology, and two only drink human blood.  Youkai can outright consume humans.

As for the species of "<profession> youkai", like Patchouli and Alice (and possibly soon-to-be Marisa and Reimu), they're normal humans whose powers have grown so much they've gone pretty much beyond being human.  This ties into the whole Youkai definition:  things that've lived long enough or gained enough power to become "something else, something more than they were".  But these youkai aren't ones who consume humans, probably since they are/were one themselves.  So they're different.

By the way, it was Meiling (standard youkai) that talked about eating the protagonist, not Patchouli (witch youkai).

SA has one. Stage 4. Right at the end.

Nope, the extra bosses in LLS, MS, and SoEW don't have time out attacks, but then again, no one plays PC-98!  ::)

Actually, according to Perfect Memento (http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Perfect_Memento:_Encyclopedia:_Sorcerer), there's a second type of Magician-youkai which starts out nonhuman, and become "full fledged" youkai by a slightly different process, and Patchouli was born that way whereas Alice was a human. (What Alice was doing in Makai is a question best left to Wild Mass Guessing.)

Ah that's right.  But I didn't think Patchy was born a youkai.

I actually stated in my post something like "esod and after". Not that pc-98 is not worth mentioning. Just generally habits evolve and develop over time. Again, with final fantasy, there were no chocobos to begin with, but later on there were. Just like there were no big strong quasi-mechanical enemies called ___weapon, but after 6 there were.

I just have one question: can someone make an IaMP tier list based on damage output?. I can't really tell, everyone's defense is way too high. >_>

http://iamp.mizuumi.net/index.php/Main_Page

It's most likely here. If not, well I don't play IaMP that much, so I can't really help there.

Also, that's not really a question, but more of a request.
