This thread is to catch all the plot bunnies you may have bouncing around in your head. Even if you know it won't go anywhere, just write down the premise of your idea and post it here!
I should probably also clarify that this thread is primarily for just ideas you're not serious about writing, to differentiate it from the writing workshop (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,6591.0.html). That one is for "I'm having trouble writing this chapter, what do you think?" and this one is for "So I was taking a shower this morning and just came up with x."
Idea: Marisa is known to have piles upon piles of junk in her house. But in DS EX-5 (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Double_Spoiler/Spell_Cards/Stage_EX#Spell_Card_EX_-_5), Hatate says that her house is super empty. Either the Tengu have even more cluttered houses than Marisa (which is saying something) or Marisa went through and cleaned it. If the former, then I could see a comedy in which Aya forces Hatate to get out of her damn house so Momizi can clean it because it smells like something died in there. If the latter, then I'd like to see a fic dealing with all the interesting things Marisa came across as she cleaned house.

A list of story ideas I'd been kicking around:
1) By some stroke of luck (or someone's machinations), Reimu massive amount of money, enough to more than set her for life. What does she do with it? How does everyone else (especially Marisa and Kasen) react?
2) This one I got from a discussion on the IRC: It's winter, and Cirno and the rest of Team 9 are out testing out some ice skates they'd bought/stolen. However, the ice fairy isn't one for much gracefulness, so she keeps tripping and falling and eventually goes home sulking. How does she get out of her bad mood? Does she overcome her inability to ice skate?
3) Reisen feels quite lonely in Eitentei--she's having trouble connecting with the Lunarians, and she finds the Earth Rabbits too flighty to get along with. She can contact the moon, but she can still feel the physical distance between her and her fellow moon rabbits gnawing away at her. Noting this, Eirin subtly gets her student to try and make friends with some of Gensokyo's residents, but Reisen's innate distrust of Earth-dwellers gets in the way...

Reimu was in massive danger from being killed from an angry group of extremely experienced faires. Yuaki quickly takes her death and Reimu gets depressed that Yukari has died. A month later Yukari appears out of nowhere and claims that a 'fake Yukari' from a parallel universe took her death.

Some ideas of mine:
Miko discovers that Rinnosuke has the Kusanagi. This could go in any direction, but preferably includes Kourin trying to bluff his way out and failing horribly.
Sanae meets Kaguya and goes into fangirl mode, asking her inane questions and refusing to leave her alone. Kaguya tries to get rid of her with Impossible Requests, but Sanae's power is miracles so she accomplishes each one instantly. And then Kaguya treating her like a suitor causes her to level up into yandere mode. :V
"The power to eat sweets and not get fat" isn't the only power of the Yin-Yang Orbs that has a combat use. There is no mentioned limit on what kind of cat it can turn into (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Tiger_%28Chinese_astronomy%29), and producing the smell of something means it must also be producing small amounts of that something (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimatter).
While someone is visiting Reimu, Genji shows up and starts complaining about how Reimu should respect her elders, he taught her everything she knows, etc. He then starts telling stories about their early adventures, most of which go something like:Genji: "And her hair! Red, like the fires of hell! As Reimu turned to me for guidance, fear in h-"
Marisa: "Uh, gramps? I'm right here. And blonde."
Genji: "Not now, Chiyuri, I'll get to your part. Now where was I? Ah yes. Fires of hell!"
(this is my headcanon explanation for any PC-98/Windows discrepancies)

I have several ideas about crossover or fusion stories involving Touhou Project. I admit I want to apply rule circle nine to my favourite stories or films as much as possible (If it exist there's probably a Touhou version of it).
1. Touhou Project X Familiar of Zero in which Patchouli is summoned by Louise.
Basic premise: Louise summoned Patchouli into Halkeginia. Instead of the usual disorientation when someone who is summoned by Louise appeared in the middle of students Patchouli is fully aware of her surroundings and makes no attempt to hide the fact that she is a capable magician. She casts a translation spell on herself, erected a magic protection around her the moment Louise tried to cast the familiar binding spell and foiling Louise?s attempt to bind Patchouli to her. When she knows about commoners and nobles of this world, Patchouli do not hesitate to show them what magic she is capable of. Of course this makes Louise?s friend give her mixed evaluation of her magic abilities. In one hand she succeeds in summoning a powerful mage but in the other hand Louise cannot bind her to become her familiar.
Despite Louise?s apparent failure to make Patchouli a familiar, she wants to stay to study the magic of this realm which is based on a slightly different elemental system than what she usually uses. After Patchouli knows about Louise?s reputation she decided to tutor her because she knows that a failure cannot possibly open a portal to another world. Patchouli?s motivation to teach Louise is to study what kind of magic she's capable of and if her magic is connected to the mysterious void element. Additionally, Patchouli has studied the portal before she leaves to Halkeginia and has given Koakuma a communication device so that Patchouli can stay in touch with SDM and eventually open a portal by herself to receive supplies. When Louise begins to gather some friends, Patchouli agrees to teach them her brand of magic so Louise does not have the monopoly on advanced magic and knowledge. I would like to see the possible consequences of all of Louise?s friends getting advanced magic from Patchouli earlier in the story and how this will make a difference from the canon storyline. Maybe a bigger difference would result in Patchouli introducing a different magic system to the school than what was accepted by the church.
2. Kamen Rider Den-O influenced Touhou story (Kamen Rider Gens-O ?)
In which the role of Ryotaro Nogami is replaced by an ordinary human from the human village. This human is friendly with Reimu and her youkai friends. If the human is male he may have a crush on Reimu. Like Ryotaro, this human is capable of remaining conscious during possession and can eject the possessing youkai if she wants. The role of the Owner is replaced by Yukari, Naomi is replaced by Ran, and the Imagins (both protagonist and antagonist) are replaced by youkais (not limited from Gensokyo) although I want to see what happens if the four -taros are replaced with the four devas of the mountain. Alternatively, there is a suggestion on Danbooru that Suika replaces Momotaros, Murasa replaces Urataros, Yuugi replaces Kintaros, and Reisen replaces Ryuutaros. Then I guess Aya can replace Sieg.
Youkai and supernatural beings started to appear in the outside world and causing problems. Some of Gensokyo's youkai also disappeared. Yukari asked the human villager to solve this incident by returning the youkai into Gensokyo or if it is a new youkai, apprehend them and place them in the Gensou Liner (Yukari's train). To help in solving the incident Yukari give the human a special belt and a Suica train pass. By wearing the belt then swiping the pass in front of the belt and letting one or more of the trusted youkai to posses her the human can transform into Kamen Rider and use the powers of the youkai that possessed her. The cause of this incident is unknown and like previous incidents the ultimate goal is to find who or what is responsible and make it stop; if possible using Gensokyo way. I admit that I don't know all the important details of this story. Beside the perpetrator/cause, I am not sure I can give satisfactory justification behind why this time the five usual incident solvers cannot get involved , why Yukari needs a train to pass through her gap dimension and why the protagonist youkais need to possess a human instead of battling the antagonist youkais themselves.
My own ideas about these things are that most youkais that cause incidents in the outside world do not come from Gensokyo but from some other place/planes of existence/dimensions/reality. The missing youkai from Gensokyo has been captured and studied by the unknown perpetrator and even brainwashed to cause trouble to humans in the outside world. Since youkai alone can be controlled by the mysterious enemy, combining youkai and human abilities behind the protection of Kamen Rider armor and enhanced magitech significantly increased the chance to defeat these new enemies. In addition, the new youkais are not bound by spellcard rules so extra power and defense is a must. As to why the five incident solvers are not involved, I think that most if not all of them will repulse the idea of being possessed by youkai. Secondly, it may be better if they patrol Gensokyo, guarding against the enemy's attempt to recruit more Gensokyo youkai. Reimu is going to be needed to monitor Hakurei Barrier and Yukari is going to monitor any border breach from inside her gap dimension, using the train as a magitech observation platform and as containment for captured youkai to interrogate them. When Reimu knows about this arrangement, she demands to be on the Gensou Liner to be able to check up on her friends (the human as well as the youkais that Yukari recruits) so I think Reimu is replacing Hana's role. With this setup, it is possible for the Gensou Liner to stop not only in the outside world but also other alien places/times/planes of existence etc, that are dangerous to both human and youkai.
I don't know who can replace Yuuto, Deneb and the Zero Liner, Airi Nogami and the two frequent visitors to Milk Dipper cafe. Finally, I just want to mention that I do not like the usual motive used for many of the Touhou crossovers I have read: Yukari is bored and mess with boundaries between series to make things more entertaining for herself. So I hope if anyone is interested in turning this idea into a fanfic, they don't make it so it turns out that Yukari is the one behind it after all.

I think I know where this one came from. Don't remember exactly when it was, but I pitched an idea on the IRC that featured Cirno learning how to figure skate then creating spellcards based around figure skating techniques, all from finding a book on the topic. I even had a little intro typed up, but this isn't a project I plan on pursuing anytime soon.

I don't really have any serious ideas, but I do have some silly ones. I guess they can be serious if you wanted them to be...?
Yukari, Eirin, and the Moriya Shrine gods decide to be more direct in their manipulation. Everyone in Gensokyo is assigned a chess piece and a ridiculous game of 3-way chess starts. Chess piece rebellions may or may not happen.
Reimu decides that the spellcard rules will be replaced by rock-paper-scissors matches. Satori proceeds to take over Gensokyo.
Alice, Hina, and Medicine hold a "characters associated with dolls" meeting. Medicine repeatedly tries to assasinate Alice and assume leadership, but is constantly stopped by Hina emitting bad luck.
Rinnosuke attempts to be more successful in business by starting a stock market in Gensokyo. Even Tewi's luck cannot guarantee success.
In the winter, Cirno rolls a snowball down a snow-covered Youkai Mountain. Half of the mountains population is caught up in the resulting avalanche.

a government orginization is attempting to help the gods and youkai of gensokyo ragain some of their lost faith by sending in an advisore to help them orginize. only the advisore is slowly getting more and more pissed of at gensokyo residents because of their attitudes and the fact that he is slowly discovering that the loss of most of humanities belief in them was cause by either their own actions or inactions

this one is a touhou/persona crossover. do to the supernatural disappearing from the outside world humanity had become more inclosed and much more dishonest with itself causeing more and more shadows to appear which is causeing more and more humans to die. because gensokyos exsistance needs the disbelief of humans in the outside world to maintain it's border the death of the humans in the outside world has begain to put gensokyo in danger. in order to protect gensokyo yukari has started a project to send people in gensokyo out into the outside world to help the humans to come to terms with their true selves and awaken their personas. I was thinking of a multi anime video game crossover thing branching into several slice of life animes such as the lucky star, both nichijou animes, Tonari no Kaibutsu, acchi koochi, and any other sol animes i can think of. it focus mostly on the ideas of persona 4 but has less to do with Izanami-no-Mikoto
3. everyday touhou: world shaker addition
a series of stories telling the actions of all of gensokyos major players as they face their first incident that has ever put the entire planet of earth in danger.
4 the aki sister's shrine and priest
after being dropped into gensokyo a young boy meets the aki sisters. feeling bad for them he decideds to build them a shrine that rivals the hakurai or moriya shrine and begins to help them build faith in hopes of restoreing their pride as goddesses and to help them gain so much faith that they'll even surpase kanako.

Shaman King X Touhou
Maribel and Renko are exploring an abandoned shrine said to be haunted, and get separated. Renko calls out for Maribel, only to find she's been cornered by delinquents who've decided to move in, led by the infamous Wooden Broom Marisa ("Who told ya y'could call me Mari?"). Renko gets beaten up a little, and falls through rotted floorboards into an underground chamber. While there she hears a voice coming from a weird orb that asks if she wants to help her friend, or something like that (it sounds kind of impatient). Naturally she says yes. Renko shows up to save Maribel with a serious expression. Marisa laughs, but then she holds up the Yin-Yang Orb and shouts some phrase; a ghostly image of PC-98 Reimu flows out of the orb and overlays itself on Renko, causing her to take on the appearance of Windows Reimu. Much ownage ensues.
Most of the other characters form similar teams of a Windows "human" and a PC-98 "spirit" with similar powers (eg. Cirno gets ice powers from channeling Mai), though Youmu can get away with a Myon-Youki. Rinnosuke+Genji serve as mentor figures early on. Maribel doesn't get a partner, but turns out to have information-gathering powers that are frequently vital when Renko fights more powerful opponents.
Yukari is the main villain, who uses Ran-in-monster-form as her partner and has a strange interest in Maribel. Her goals are mysterious, but are eventually revealed to be "gain control of the Dragon God and use its power to create a world of fantasy". She succeeds, and the protagonists have to deal with the aftermath.
Later on, Marisa is possessed by Mima, who seeks vengeance on Reimu... but Reimu has no idea who she is. Turns out they're both softies deep down - Mima can't go through with killing someone, and the sword in Marisa's broom she kept threatening to use on people never existed.
Renko's first "upgrade" (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShonenUpgrade) is learning how to use spell cards - powers which rely on the combined powers of the spirit and medium, rather than the spirit itself.
Eventually Marisa shows up in a Big Damn Heroes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BigDamnHeroes) moment to save Renko from Yuuka, now channeling a reformed Mima through the Mini-Hakkero (which turns her hair from red to blonde). Turns out that despite her low spirit power Marisa is a genius at magic spells, and she's been cramming like crazy since her last appearance.
The group is briefly joined by the young dowser Nazrin, but she is so impressed by Shou that she ends up switching sides to Myouren Temple, who want to take the fight to Yukari directly. (I had this idea before Ten Desires can you tell)
Alice is the Faust equivalent, while Remilia stands in for Boris Tepes.

I was about to use TARC for this, but I'm only listing the story. *shrug*
Gensokyo: Total War: Suika plots to overthrow Yukari's self-established position as master of Gensokyo. Things happen, and everyone gets caught in the ensuing wars.
- Underground Campaign: Suika and Yuugi rally the oni and their allies to march on the world above, but Satori, who is simply following the exile agreement, refuses, leading the Oni Alliance to attack the resulting Chireiden Triumvirate: satori, kasha, and hell ravens. The latter manages to escape above before being utterly crushed under the weight of the oni and relay these events to Yukari.
- Gensokyo Campaign: When the oni break out of the underground, all of Gensokyo is thrown into chaos, and the Spell Card Rules get quickly abandoned in favor of wiping Suika off the face of Gensokyo. The youkai then break off into factions, all wanting to take over Gensokyo, destroy the oni, or both:
- Yakumo-Chireiden
- Koumakan
- Tengu-Moriya
- Houjuu
- Kitsune
- Nekomata
- Oni Alliance (oni, tsuchigumo, etc.)
- Tanuki
- Eientei-Usagi
- Human Village (includes Reimu, Marisa, Alice, Youmu, Myouren Temple, and Mokou)
- Kappa
- Shinreibyou
- Tsukumogami
Nue joins in for no apparent reason other than to wreck both sides into pieces. Eventually, this boils down to three powers: Yakumo, Oni, and Houjuu. I haven't exactly decided how it will end, though.
- Seasons' Campaign: Yuuka, the Aki sisters, and Letty decide once and for all, in Total War style, who the strongest one among them is. Cue fairies, immortality, and a Realm Divide which sics Yukari onto the dominant season. There is no Summer because it is the most boring of the four.

2. The Prismriver sisters actually came from one poltergeist.

Kana Anaberal. She lost in PoDD and went back to the mansion, where Layla, yes Layla Prismriver then divided her into three personalities.
3. The relationship between PC-98 Yuuka and Elly.
I want to make a bit of Yuri story based from this. :V Haha!

Do to the sudden outbreak of the magic manjus called yukkuri in the outside world humans have started beleaveing in magic which is causeing the hakurai border to become weaker and is leading to more and more humans crossing the border. it's pretty much one of those you've got to be kidding me things, like finding out that thje supreme itellegence of the universe is a chicken or that all the different races of humans are just a bunch of different alien races thrown together on one planet.

here's the basic story. alex mercer succeded in tearning every human into beings like himself. After one of the cooking teams latest venture into the outside world they return with a single human they thought they would eat only for the human to beat the crap out of them and than eat the in response. After that cetain people in gensokyo notice a sudden drop in human food supply(remilia, yukari, rumia, ect.) and report the sudden death of the cook teams to the hakurai shrine. after some investigating it is found out, that not only are outside humans impossiable to feed on now but their is also a outside world human stealing and eating youkai body parts to get their powers.
3. baka to touhou: perverted camara duo
what is kota from baka to test was dropped in gensokyo, what if he met aya, what if they formed an unholy aliance of pervertion.

It's time for the yearly Chireiden Grand Prix, where the underground's fastest racers zoom around an underground track for the entertainment of everyone in the Ancient City. Rin "Hell's Traffic Accident" Kaenbyou defends her title against the new hotshot on the block, Reiuzi Utsuho, and her drag racer, the explosive and shockingly fast Yatagarasu. Who will win?

Leaving all her childish dreams behind, she sets forth for a new dream which was a normal fun filled high school life. But her delusions came after her in the strangest way, her explosive imaginary best friend was now a non-explosive but equally rowdy girl sitting behind her, the stoic puppeteer who frequently visited her shrine was now an up tight foreigner and class representative, and the celestial who shook Gensokyo was now just a typical troublemaker/delinquent. She finds many more in the entire school. They shared the same names and the same appearance but none of the experience! Was her make believe world actually real or it was one big coincidence?! As Reimu struggles to keep her delusions from exploding while putting up with her new friends' antics, she slowly finds herself in a bigger dilemma, she was falling in love with the most unlikely individual! Youth, hope, illusion and memories collide in this Touhou x Chu2 yuri fanfic!

However, every time she dons her trusty mask, strange things happen to the residents of Gensokyo: the fairies are suddenly dressed in black turtleneck sweaters and ski-masks, Sanae starts overdosing on makeup while pretending she's a clown, Suika keeps trying to hug Reimu to death, and also seems intent on injecting herself with sake and calling it 'Venom'. Meanwhile, Momiji is flinging her shield around like a frisbee, Alice is shooting adhesive puppetry wires, and Iku is falling from the sky screaming about Asgard as Tenshi realizes she's adopted.
These incidents only occur when Reimu has the mask on, oddly enough, and though they feel real enough when she's resolving them, when Reimu returns to being a normal, boring shrine maiden, it's as though the incidents have never occurred. For example: Vigilante-Reimu punches Sanae in the face; later on, normal-Reimu talks to her and Sanae's not even bruised.
A strange sort of Marvel/DC/Touhou thing, I suppose.

The Neighbourhood Hell Association is downsizing and streamlining the hells of the world. (About time! It's been on the to-do list for, like, the last 7,000 years.) Chireiden, as a former hell, now has to share space with Duat, the Egyptian underworld, which doesn't need a whole lot of space but couldn't be fit into any of the more thematically related Hells. Everyone worries about the mythological mishmash and its possible implications, until Satori makes Ammut her new pet, and befriends all the animals of their mythology.

In a quiet city somewhere, Reimu had spent her elementary and middle school days pretending to be the Hakurei miko, an all powerful protector of the peace in the fantasy land of Gensokyo, which led to an isolation she had never really cared about. She was now in high school and the craving for human contact and relationship has finally caught up with her. Leaving all her childish dreams behind, she sets forth for a new dream which was a normal fun filled high school life. But her delusions came after her in the strangest way, her explosive imaginary best friend was now a non-explosive but equally rowdy girl sitting behind her, the stoic puppeteer who frequently visited her shrine was now an up tight foreigner and class representative, and the celestial who shook Gensokyo was now just a typical troublemaker/delinquent. She finds many more in the entire school. They shared the same names and the same appearance but none of the experience! Was her make believe world actually real or it was one big coincidence?! As Reimu struggles to keep her delusions from exploding while putting up with her new friends' antics, she slowly finds herself in a bigger dilemma, she was falling in love with the most unlikely individual! Youth, hope, illusion and memories collide in this Touhou x Chu2 yuri fanfic!

Yes, Tenshi is Loki. She has the funky hat, the personality issues, and isn't considered a fully-higher being, unlike Iku, who... probably has the status, due to being a messenger of dragons. I think it keys in quite nicely, if I do say so myself.

It is fun to think about, but I don't think I'd be able to write it. This is the sort of thing that would stretch on for chapters and chapters and chapters... I'm not dedicated enough to write epics.
But I can keep throwing ideas out there. Eiki Shiki: Two-Face. Kanako: Nick Fury. Nitori: Iron Man. Utsuho: the Hulk. Yuuka: Poison Ivy.

A serious story which moves the Ten Desires cast to a contemporary setting, replacing the shikaisen ritual with a sex-change operation. Byakuren is Miko's conservative mother, who freaks out and interrupts Miko's girlification, accidentally sending her into a coma (Dr. Kaku and her nurse take most of the fall, and end up becoming fugitives). Years later, her friends are there to greet her as she wakes up. Oh, and Futo must be given an irrational fixation with miniskirts. :V
(based on the interpretation that Miko adopting a "more modern appearance" as a shikaisen included changing her gender)

When Nazrin disappears, Byakuren and Shou and the rest of the Myouren Temple crew decide to go rescue her from those dangerous satori before she ends up as Rin's snack!

Some high-ranking PC-98 character finally gets fed up with being in the shadows, and rallies all PC-98 characters to face off against the Windows ones. However, they find that Gensokyo has become an American 1950's idealistic society sitcom world where different characters are in family-like relationships, and all water has been replaced by liquid desserts. Cirno is the small, annoying child of one of the families. Will the ancestors of Windows be able to fix this?

I have several ideas for a Touhou x Highlander story for awhile now:
1. Mokou met and befriended a Highlander immortal who tried to show her the positive side of immortality, help her find another purpose than revenge, and take her travelling around the earth, meeting new people, cultures, and even fair folks/ supernatural beings.
2. an immortal met several of the Touhou characters long before the formation of Great Hakurei Barrier and met with them again in the present day Gensokyo. An instance of the previous meeting is that immortal, who have the ability to copy the power of youkai and other supernatural beings*, worked in the SDM and bring up Remilia and Flandre to maturity in both character and powers.
In the present day, that immortal also befriend Marisa and Reimu and acted as a go between and PR for the Hakurei Shrine to the human village. This ensures that Reimu's donation box is filled and that the villagers know about Reimu's real exploits.
*that power was hinted at in the first Highlander movie in which Ramirez told Connor to feel the heartbeat of a stag, causing Connor to gain the speed and stamina of the stag.
4. An immortal in Gensokyo who is interested to learn from the various youkai communities exchanges tales, life stories and general conversation with the sages of each community.
5. Somehow the immortals got news of the existence of Gensokyo, the Hourai Elixir, and the person rumored to be able to make it. Excited by the prospect of absolute immortality they gathered in Gensokyo and play The Game there while trying to have an elixir made for them. How does Reimu and the others solve this incident of beheadings and small scale fire/ lightning storms?
Or The Gathering was caused by Suika who, for whatever reason, used her power to gather the immortals in Gensokyo.
Another idea is a Strike Witches x Touhou in which a Neuroi Hive appeared above Gensokyo without the witches. Since Gensokyo's policy is to accept everything and everyone, using powers to completely destroy/remove the Neuroi is out of the question. Reimu and friends need to find a way to stop the Neuroi from taking over Gensokyo, understand and communicate with them and finally befriend them, just like with the perpetrators of past incidents.

On the subject of Moon Capital, Kaguya and Usagi Tsukino meet and discuss the history and relationship between their kingdoms. The idea of Sailor Soldiers meeting Touhou is nothing new I admit. Others have come up with it.
@ Tengukami: Thanks for your encouragement. I'm glad to meet a person who also think that Touhou X Highlander is a sensible crossover idea. However I don't intend to flesh these premises into full stories, for now anyway. Maybe sometime in the future.

So, I'm a little new to the whole fanfict thing... and I was thinking, perhaps I could try a story that's sorta Touhou, yet at the same time, not really Touhou. Basically, the premise I have in mind is a pocket dimension, similar to Gensokyo... only those there are attending high school, so a High School AU of sorts. The main star is one Satori Komeiji, as she struggles to survive coping with Freshmen year in a school filled with the supernatural. She will make friends, enemies, and uncover a dark and sinister plot within Youkai High, the institution built to help youkai learn more about the human world and try to adapt, for the inevitable day the barrier collapses and this realm and the human world become one. Many Touhou characters will be there, with some OC's as well (Obligatory warning of OC's). The personalitites will be as close to canon as I can get, to avoid some of the more common fanon personalities...
So... wondering if idea sounds any good, or if sounds like a horrible idea...

Depends a lot on how you write it. I've written stranger AUs, and a lot of OCs. Your big challenge when you write like that though is to make sure that the feel of Touhou flows through it. It does seem like a tough choice for an early fic. Your early fics are the ones you usually end up regretting later... ^^;

1 - Make sure you're writing your characters, not 'avoiding fanon.' Writing against something always leads to bad characterization. You should make sure you're writing to character instead. Focus on your character being real.
2 - The first rule of OCs is don't use an OC if a normal character would suffice. First rule of Touhou OCs is don't make a custom romantic interest just because you have an urge to ship. Both lead to bad writing.

Seconding this. Preserving the "Touhou feel" is fairly important for any Touhou fic, though what ultimately constitutes "Touhou feel" is up to you. It's not necessary to disregard fanon, either--while some people may dislike certain common portrayals of certain characters, on the other hand a lot of them are popular for a reason. Unless you really want to explore completely original portrayals, you don't have to "avoid common personalities" to write a good Touhou fic...and as Iced has already advised, making "writing against fanon" your primary goal as a writer is not advisable.

Things like teaching magic or arcane research or simply transmuting a new structure using only dirt or grass a building materials. Anything where she's actually using magic and not just being The Heart. Any guidance on how to make a story along these lines?

It's not that I'd mind seeing an arcane/alchemist Byakurein fic. Juat saying that her magic specialazation is magic that boosts her physical abilities. She dabbled in dark arts in order to find a way to achieve immortality, so you could use that concept and write an origin story. Or you could go OOC with her and make her similar to Marisa, Alice or Patchouli.

Well, perhaps you could start by trying to answer the question: why is Byakuren trying to use magic?
Remember that Byakuren originally researched body-enhancement magic in order to prolong her life. She doesn't do that as much nowadays (IIRC), since she's more focused on her temple and her clerical duties. So why's she going back to magic? What's the trigger? Perhaps the answer to that question could get you started.

While I wouldn't be as cut and dry as Fonzi is, you probably do want to put some thought into Byakuren's style of magic. Remember she's an eastern witch, not a western one, and she's over a thousand years old. Her powers will be more shamanistic with ritual elements then the nice clean alchemy and spells of modern magical thought. Though writing of course has always been considered to have massive power. Finally she probably used vulgar magic more in her past. Now she seems to be using Buddhist spells and her innate enhancements more.
The main issue in the writing will of course be "what is Byakuren doing with her power?"

(Sorry for the delay in replying; besides the site maintenance, I needed to give the second half of my reply some thought.
Well, perhaps you could start by trying to answer the question: why is Byakuren trying to use magic?
I've thought of that in terms of what motivates her: 1) Peace between humans and youkai, 2) Mahayana Buddhism, and 3) the latest incident.
Combining 1 and 2 (peace and Mahayana) she could teach humans how to be magicians (there has to be some who aren't as intolerant as Akyuu) so that not only would they be less fearful of, and therefore less hostile towards, youkai (the magicians in the Forest of Magic seem to be doing just fine, so the thinking goes) but they'd also be liberated from many physical concerns. If she decides to share immortality she'd likely get in enough trouble to base a story off of?
Going with 3, reacting, would be done manly to show off what she can do with her magic rather than how society reacts to it. This kind of story requires me thinking up a situation (anything from "hair cur by prankster" to "Yuuka AND Ex-Rumia AND a shoggoth are running amok, again") and figuring out how she'd use magic to solve it.
You probably do want to put some thought into Byakuren's style of magic.
I've been giving this thought for weeks, to the point of actually researching Buddhism (not just on the web but through The Teaching Company courses). What caught my mind the most is how the metaphysics emphasize interconnected causations. The analogy I use is cell biology; each cell both is and isn't individual, and all are interconnected as part of a greater whole.
Which leads me to wondering how her "evil" magic is different from her Mikkyo. All I know is that she learned the how-to of immortality from studying youkai.

Maybe something simple like Marisa becoming her apprentice in magic awakens some nostalgia.
Or all the other magicians disappear mysteriously and only a magician can solve an oncoming incident, forcing her out of retirement.
Or Yumemi comes to research her brand of magic.
Or Rikako manages to drain all ambient magic, rendering external use of magic useless, leaving it up to Byakuren whose brand of magic is self-enhancement magic to help everyone. Queue epic fist fights.

Sorry for the necropost, but I dreamt two nights ago and thought of a Touhou x Rune Factory (specifically, Tides of Destiny) crossover fic. The basic plot goes like this:
Sanae Kochiya was minding her own business when a mysterious light enveloped her and knocked her unconscious. When she wakes up, she finds herself in another, unfamiliar world-- and without a body! Idea: A story where the central schtick involves a prominent (and otherwise immortal) member of the Touhou cast coming down with a terrible disease.
Problem: I can't think of a way to implement it where the drama can't be summarily cut off at the pass by timely strategic deployment of an Eirin.

Hmm, let's see...
Mokou: Kaguya withholds Eirin's aid to troll Mokou (it's not like Mokou will come to permanent harm anyway)
Yukari: Her dislike of Lunarians causes her to refuse Eirin out of stubborn pride.
Tenshi: No one likes her enough to help her out.
Yuyuko: Since Yuyuko's a ghost, her "illness" is something beyond even the Genius of the Moon.
Kaguya: Orders Eirin to stand down because she finds the experience of getting sick to be novel.
Remilia: Stubborn pride again.

Or you could just go pre-IN so Eirin is still on the moon.
Hell, you could reach all the way back to the PC-98 era, or even earlier, though that sort of narrows your choices down to Mokou, Mokou, or...Mokou.
Since we're not sure how long she's been in Gensokyo as opposed to Kaguya and co. it's safe to the pyro got there first. You can't befriend a loner overnight, after all, so Keine must have known her for quite some time.
But that's just me ^_^;

Why not just set it between PCB and IN? That way, you have your character, and Eirin isn't even in Gensokyo yet so she obviously can't do anything.
Or you could just set it in PC-98 time, and have her in Makai instead.

If nobody's able to contact Eientei, then no one will be able to make deliveries anyway.
Besides, if you can't think of a way to explain why they aren't going to Eirin, then don't even bother explaining it. I'm okay with suspending my disbelief if it makes for a good story.

Gensyoko is in Japan, right?
So, Gensyoko is Japan's little sister.
After Gensyoko was sealed away by the youkai living on her lands in 1885, she has been living in Gensyoko since.
It's essentially a "Slice of Life" kind of idea, with Gensyoko interacting with the Touhou characters.

Alright, time to throw my cards on the table and bring one up that I have in the works but haven't posted anywhere. I actually wrote up a description of it earlier for myself, and here is "The reaper of Gensokyo"
The Reaper of Gensokyo-
"After a Celestial vaporizes the current reaper shingami of Gensokyo and makes the shingami no longer able to do its duties, The Afterlife decides a replacement must be called in to reap the lost souls of Gensokyo. And thus, the boy Liam Alibus is tasked as that replacement. A young trainee Shingami with only 14 years as a mortal and rest in shingami training is thrusted into Komachi and Shikieiki?s care and sent to reap Gensokyo?s lost and unwilling souls.

To quote, "A male Touhou OC, heaven help me". The story originally came to mind when I thought about how there's reaper shingami and ferrymen shingami, it seems Komachi is Genskoyo's ferryman, and Eiki's Gensokyo's judge, so I thought to myself "Shouldn't there be a reaper of gensokyo" and the story started to come up in my head.
Liam isn't all too powerful, and well, reminds me of Kourin's role in Touhou. Somewhat important, but not enough to appear in the games. He'll start at the bottom, and eventually (past this story) reach stage 4 tier.
Liam's role is to be a audience surrogate, to ease and introduce people to the crazy world of Gensokyo and it's residents, and introduce people to my version of gensokyo.
The viewpoint of the story does jump around from character to character (for example, chapter 1's viewpoint is Eiki, 2's is Liam, 3's is Komachi, 4's is Wiggle) in a bit of a round robin, but the focus will usually be on Liam's story of him adjusting and getting use to Gensokyo and being a shingami (as well as wondering if he's cut out for the shingami cloth)
Storywise, this would take place a few years before the first game even begins, and while the story is Liam's coming of age story, it's also a epilouge to what happened to the previous generation of incident solvers (or mostly, why they aren't active anymore), as well as foreshadow things for all the later stories I want to tell in this fan-verse.

Kaguya decides to add yet another rare artifact to her collection, The Holy Grail. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to currently exist. Eirin has a discovered a way to remake it though. All they need to do is a little ritual involving 6 other magicians and 7 summons....
