Fans of the dolls?
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:33:07 AM »
I'm curious...

Are any one of you here fans of Shanghai, Hourai or Goliath Doll?

I'm a fan of the first two.
There's nothing inscribed on the dog tag...

Seriously though, I'm a little confused by what the point of this thread is.

Seems the subject of this thread is to see how many people are fans of Shanghai, Hourai, or the Goliath Doll. They're mainly just dolls that Alice use.

But in the fandom, they have been given some expansion outside of thier usual character that make them more like characters. So yeah pretty much a shout out to the little guys we would otherwise simply ignore.

Would Medicine count too?

I always thought "Hanged Hourai Doll" was really cool and kind of dark. Like an immortal doomed to hang forever.

I never cared much about them. But I usually confuse Shanghai with Hourai. It's hard for me to tell who is who if both of them are on the same pic.

Sweetness and love~ ♥

Medicine is sitting in a corner crying at being forgotten.

Also Yumeko's title is the 'Doll' of Misery.

And what about Holland, London, ect?

I don't even remember who put the above in my sig. [Wasn't me] Nor do I understand why I keep it here anymore.
Those two facts sum me up pretty well.

In some sense, they are 'fan-made' characters.
I don't think there was any case of Alice calling a specific doll 'Shanghai Doll'.
If ZUN called Alice's familiar in th08 something like 'Dutch Doll', we probably would be getting 'Dutch Doll' and 'Russian Doll'.

And it's actually Yumeko's theme song.

Not exactly a big fan of Marisa A's shot type in Subterranean Animism. Personally I like Medicine's character more than Alice's puppets. Maybe it's because Medicine is a being of sentience with personality whereas Alice's puppets are nothing more than just tricky combat devices...

I think its hard to compare Medicine with Alice's dolls.
@Abraham Lincoln, you say like Medicine more because shes actually sentient but would you really know that Alice's dolls aren't sentient? Alice supposedly controls them to be as lifelike as possible, so if you were charmed by their personality would it really be any less valuable then being charmed by Medicine.

I know that Alice's dolls are supposed to be tools.

I guess I am after reading omoito but I don't really have much to say about them. Naturally I'd have at least some love for them (being one who loves Alice so much) but I did love her dolls before truly developing a love for Alice so you could say I've liked them since omoito. It all does seem to stem from that one doujin though so I'm not sure if you could quite say I love the dolls or if I just love the characters in the doujin.

In the games they just seem lime extentions of Alice - which I guess they are. Alice herself wants to change that though. Maybe they should be given more screen time.

I like both Shanghai and Hourai, because they're cute.

And the Doujins.
