Title: Did your fave Touhou character change over time?
Post by: Ghaleon on April 22, 2010, 11:05:51 PM
As I've said before, my fave Touhou characters is a tiebreaker between Remi, Flan, and Patchy (SDM represent), however as I do more and more Touhou-related stuff, I find it easier to favor Remi. I THINK it's because Remi is, a pretty "main" character, while patchy isn't quite so much, and Flan is..Well, she's kind of a special case for many things, like a secret character in this game, or goof-off material for music, or whatever. She rarely gets the same kind of treatment as remi.

I mean my initial faves were based on danmaku, BGM, character graphic, in-game dialogue, clothing, etc. But I find patchy tends to be "just another character" in most fangames comapred to remi for example. I also find like 10 Remi music remixes for every 1 that patchy gets, and while Flan has almost as much as remi, they tend to suck. I see 5  remi pictures for every 1I see of Patchy or flan, etc.

So what I mean to ask is, did you notice your fave Touhou character change to something more common (not necessarily a more common favorite) as you knew the series for longer? Not that I'll say Remi is flat out my fave still, but I can't say that I don't find myself enjoying remi-related stuff more often than anybody else.

I think what has changed the most for me has been the reasons why I like different characters, based on new things I learn about them as I read the wiki. Initially, I have to say, I was smitten with Wriggle Nightbug. Pretty much because I liked the way she was drawn, and I liked her dialogue.

While Imperishable Night is at least one of my favorite games in the series, it was when I started clicking character pages on the wiki that I learned about Remilia's murky past, Yuyuko's heartbreaking past, and Kaguya's epic past. I'm finding my favorites to be characters I like because of what made them who they are. Aya's character strikes a real chord for me not so much for her past, though, as her personality (the actual one; not the fandom interprettation), the role she plays in Gensokyo as one of the more important historians of the early Windows series, and for being very Gensokyan herself - a blend of the ancient past and the modern day, where what's true and what's just a good story overlap.

EDIT: Realized I misinterpreted the topic. Heh.

Utsuho's always been at the top for me. Never been dethroned at any time either, even after learning more about other characters.

My first favorite character was Sakuya. At the beginning, I simply gravitated toward her shot types in the games that featured her as a playable character (and toward her fighting style in IaMP). This eventually manifested in a genuine interest in her character: her abilities and mysterious past (re: Erin's comment) were intriguing. This was back when there wasn't such a big translation effort as there is now.

Eventually as more ZUN literature came out, Sakuya ended up taking a back seat as I took an interest in Yukari. Her powers are interesting, but more importantly, Yukari made me notice ZUN attempting to create and expand a more cohesive Gensokyo mythology. Part of the reason why I like Touhou is ZUN's Gensokyo, so I suppose Yukari's connection to it just makes me attracted to her character.

Nowadays Yukari still remains one of my favorite two characters. The other is Yuka. I really have no good reason for liking Yuka. I just think she is great. And she has a parasol.

...Maybe I just like characters with parasols now.

My favorite started out as Sakuya. She still is one of my favorites, but I'm honestly really tentative about my favorites now.
Over time, I came to think Utsuho was the coolest character of all, with a great theme and epic powers. But I didn't like how she's so dimwitted, so she went down a bit in ranks.
I'd like to say Sakuya's back at the top, but Reisen's a top contender. I enjoy a lot more about her than just her ability - Her theme, appearance, personality. Sakuya's main cool point is her ability, although her character is good. But her fanon portrayal bothers me.

Funny how all three of them have red eyes (That is, if you count Utsuho's giant eye).

Before I discovered PC-98 I was in love with Flandre and Eirin. I loved Flandre just because I really enjoyed her danmaku, theme, and personality. I still personally believe she's not as insane as fanon always portrays her. I view here more as a little kid who hasn't really gotten to experience much of the world yet. She just hasn't learned what is acceptable versus what isn't.

I've always gravitated towards Eirin because I've just always loved archer type characters. She also has one of my absolute favorite themes from all of Touhou. I see her as a very wise individual, like the adviser of the Eintei people. I believe that she's very caring.

After I was enlightened to PC-98, I immediately fell in love with the entire cast of PoDD. In particular, Chiyuri Kitashirakawa. I've always been in love with the ocean so a sailor-themed character obviously took my attention right away. In my mind Chiyuri is care-free individual. She's very loyal to Yumemi, but she still likes to have fun while she's on the job. I imagine she has a great sense of humor.

I've add various Touhous to my "Touhous I actually give a shit about" club over time, but my all time favorite has remained the same.

And that's Shinki. This being due to MS being the first game I really cleared and Shinki giving me the best final boss fight I had for a first time Touhou fag. This coupled with my liking for things that dwell in demonic realms and demons in general and her design makes for a rooted fondness for the demon god. I honestly can't explain all the reasons as to why I love Shinki, but all I know is that I'm dedicated to her and that's all that matters.

I was a huge Yuyuko fan myself, that was because largely of UD's influence.

Alice> I started liking Patchouli first though > Yuyuko moar > Alice (for the longest time, the fall back Touhou) > recently I think I finally liked Aya more, partly because I LOVE Hatate, and Tengus got a soft spot on me now (Momiji has awesome H-art) > Alice again.

When I was first introduced to Touhou, it was through the Meiling/Patchouli M-1 sequence. My #1 character claimed her spot as soon as I saw her try to follow Meiling's lead. After actually getting into the games, Patchy only solidified that hold when I learned more about her character. Physically frail, likes books, introverted, and a magician...I am three of those things myself, and have an affinity for the fourth in most games I play.

Other characters have come pretty close to taking that spot recently -- namely, Kogasa, Parsee, and Mystia -- due to my tendency to gravitate towards people who don't have it all together, but Patchy's position as my favorite stands firm.

My favorite was, is, and will always be Hong Meiling.

My secondaries however have gone through a lot of changes. First it was Patchouli because she was a bookworm who stays inside all day...  just like me. Then, it was Renko because she had "obscure moe". After a while, I realized it wasn't going anywhere and she kinda fell off the ranks. Mystia came up if because Night Sparrow's Song, Jigglypuff, etc. Next, I realized that Marisa had been there the whole time during the duration of my being a fantard: Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, the character I always played in the shmups, MAlice, and other things, so I can assure in my head that she will stay a steady 2nd/3rd. Now, I'm obsessed with The Capital City of Flowers in the Sky and the midboss happens to be Lily White, so basically:
1. Hong Meilng forever
2. Patchouli -> Renko -> Mystia -> Marisa/Lily White
3. Marisa/Lily White
4. ↓ Patchouli
5. ↓ Renko

Before SA, my fave was Yuka.

After SA, my favourite became obvious.

Also, I began to dislike Eirin and ESPECIALLY Remi more and more as time goes on.

Well, nobody's exactly fallen out of my favourites list, but it has changed a little, I think.

The biggest change, I think... is Momiji.  I hardly noticed her at first; but as I started seeing more fanart of her and stuff... somehow she really grew on me (This may be because for some reason Momiji holds up to being genderswapped deliciously well).  She's definitely one of my top five now.

The EoSD cast dropped a bit out of favour overall for me; partially because so goddamn much fanwork focuses on them... but also because for a long time I refused to play anything past EoSD until I had 1CC'd it.  So for a while I didn't know anyone else... now I just don't care too much about most of them (Although Patchouli and Sakuya are still on the favoured side of things for me)

All links lead to Danbooru - thus, consider them to be NSFW, for their banner ads! The first link will be marked; the rest will not.

There's just something about the image of a pissed off woman commanding countless flying dolls hellbent on ripping you to shreds just for her to casually step over your emaciated body when she's done that had me attracted to canon!Alice.

NSFW for Danbooru banners

Something about that style - micro-managing a small cloud of magically-powered minions, and dolls and puppets no less - that just screams 'a little bit broken inside.' The full picture my avatar comes from...

Calm, cool, collected, and very dangerous.

In time, however, Shikieiki has taken over as top-place favorite. The concept behind an avatar of justice, a supreme judge of good and evil, and on top of that has killer legs and a bitchin' hairstyle, sign me up. Her hat is pretty win, too.

Fanon tsundere Alice can die in a fire. No way in a hell a mind sophisticated enough to individually control dozens upon dozens of dolls can't figure her way through a relationship, or whether or not she wants one.

Originally, Marisa was my favorite. Though I still find her amusing, she dropped off considerably as I got to know more and more characters, and now she's not even in my top twenty. Yukari on the other hand slowly creeped up as I learned more about her, eventually dethroning her. A few months later, I discovered the brilliant angel(ic demon) known as Genget(s)u. It took a while, but she jumped into my favorites, and now Yukari and Gengetu share my top spot. <3 That is my story.

Cirno --> Letty --> Advent Cirno --> Letty

This pretty much sums up my history of favorite characters.  I had this short obsession with Advent Cirno for a while and I got over it eventually.

Cirno is cool, but Letty is cooler.

Oh yeah, winter is my favorite season.   :V

my first impact was Marisa; i like magicians characters... a traditional witch in her broom flying in a magical world...and play that was amasing. Know the rest was fun; specially for the music. One day see some images with certain man with glasses; i have a fetish with that, was too win. The art for CoLA ended turning my fab character to Rinnosuke first. the long purple hair of Patchouli (and the nickname "Patche" almost "Pachi" who is my home nickname and a hiki-bookworm-fujoshi fan idea of her) turn her one of my faborites.
After that, my faboritism is very variable accord my mood state. And for my fujoshism: Sariel turn into my faborite because i can?t defeat it and the long lavander hair, but after thing in paired with Kourin now is one of my most loved ones; Youki was nothing to me but after see a pair of images and know some facts about samurais (and a dream about that pairing!), he found a place in my heart. (with Youmu, another faborite)
Actually they two (Rinnosuke,Marisa) are always the 2 first, following for all the rest of Gensokyo (because im like the moon, very variable)

For me, my favorites have changed as my personality changed, I always love those who I can relate to.

My first favorite was Patchy, but then Sanae dethroned her after the "Good Girl" meme, and after a very certain dream. It has something to do with my personality being changed from the bookworm to the "nice but eccentric, who wants to meet someone special".

Also, nowadays, the Fairies started to grew on me, especially Daichan. I want Sanae x Daiyosei!

Do I have to explain if my stance changed? Probably not. But perhaps there is a thing to be kept in mind.

First of all, I dislike vampire girls who are portrayed more like devil girls (you know the tail, wings and the cat tooth. I am not much into that "cute" and "moe" stuff. I actually dislike Remilia or any touhou girl being portrayed cute. Personally, I don't find anything cute about a youkai, vampire, spirit who eat, kill and harass humans. But yea, that is my personal opinion.

I never seen any fan images of Remilia when I got in touch with Touhou. Even more, I never played EoSD in my life. I did see her portrait of course in IN many times, and had to forcefully use her to unlock stuff. Her portraits already charmed me a bit and her dialogue as well. That bitchy, childish, egoistic face she had. Anyway, after I beaten IN on normal, I simply did a youtube search for other Touhou final bosses. When I saw that Remilia was actually the final boss I was surprised and after I listened to her theme song I was struck.

Ok so that is more like how she became my favourite, but why is she still my favourite? Lately due to many fan art and PMiSS reading, some girls started catching my attention. Interesting and amusing Touhou girls such as: Keine, Eiki, Suika, Chen, Youmu, Reimu etc. To be honest, most of them actually have bad-ass art and appearance. This is what I am weak against: Bad-ass appearance with full glory. The reason why I am neutral against characters like Suwako, Komeiji, Utsuho, and such is because they have not the same "feel" to me as Yugi, Suika etc would have. Heck, even Reisen has far more bad-ass pictures than the Komeijis. Utsuho is only portrayed bad-ass because of her powers. That is more like based on her power, instead of her personality. Same goes for Suwako, her hat is what attracts people. Aside from that nothing.

I have seen some bad-ass/awesome appearances of Eiki-sama, Suika, Ex-Keine or Yukari for example. They could easy become a favourite, but yet Remilia has that one special thing that makes her attractive, not to mention her soothing theme song. Maybe it is the charisma after all. Yea, it must be it. Or was it fate?

Oh my, I typed way too much again. Basically, it didn't change. And it won't for a long time probably.

When I first got into Touhou, my favorite character was Marisa. I thought she was cute, and I liked how she was only interested in becoming stronger, and I like her theme song, too. Nowadays, she's "only" my second-favorite character.

In due time, I learned more about Youmu. I just loved her visual design, her half-ghost background is unique, and she's way more badass than most of the other characters, despite looking like a little girl. And I like Mystical Oriental Dream ~ Ancient Temple a lot. She's still my favorite character. I've developed a few other runners-up for favorite, including Kaguya, Reimu, and Suika.

However, right now, I've become utterly fascinated with Yukari. She's responsible for so much stuff, it's almost like she's the real main character of the series. She's classy and mysterious, lazy yet powerful, and both of her themes are awesome.

Marisa > Reimu > Suwako > Youmu >Shikieiki > Sanae >Shikieiki > Suwako > Yuka > Sanae > Shikieiki > Suwako > Marisa > Akyu

My first Touhou game was MoF, and thanks, ZUN, your Aya raped me 300 times in a row. I kinda liked her dialogue and personality though. Then I played SWR, that's the time I put Aya the first in my list, she cool, strong and beautiful, in 99% of doujin she is a sick pervert so you can say that she is the perfect woman.
Then I lurked more and found Yuyuko pretty cute and charming, she gradually overtook the top.
After that, I think because of some I-don't-remember-the-name doujin I really admired Eirin, and Yuyuko had to withdraw.
Next, Yuuka single-handedly wiped out everyone in my list.
Last year, I didn't even know why, and how, but Yukari gapped the seat and sit on there for around 3 months.
Now my top fav is the battle between Yuuka and Yukari. Rumia is the second tho, she is just too cute.

It went like this

Marisa is love -> Alice is cool -> Marisa! -> Aya? -> Shikieiki -> No, marisa! -> How about Satori? -> Satori~<3 (long period of time) -> KOISHI! :* -> shikeiki -> none -> Favorite character isn't even from touhou. If there were one, it would be either Reimu or Yuyuko.

The reasons for it? Gensyoko dreams and rather inexplicable personal preference of physical appearances and perceived personalities. No long post.

I drew my top ten Touhou characters back in '08. Referencing that, my top three were, in descending order: Shikieiki, Meiling, Reisen. When I started to get into the PC-98 series, Yumemi quickly shot up to the top spot, fought with Shikieiki a bit, and eventually settled for second. And when UFO was released, Byakuren went up the ranks in a very short time as well.

Meanwhile, Meiling and Reisen have long since fallen off of the top twenty.

So yeah, I guess while my top character didn't change, everyone else did. /shrug

Ran -> Udonge -> the Earth Palace crew -> Nazrin

For the longest time, I had been aware of Touhou, but had ne real interest in it; Ran was the catalyst that caused me to begin investigating further. When I found that there really wasn't a whole lot to her character, my interest waned. She's probably just outside my top 10 currently.

Udonge captured my interest because I liked her personality. Also, Inaba 4koma's. Still in my top 5, only more recent favorites displaced her.

There seems to be a correlation between how much I like characters and how often they (or their stages) beat me up; I guess I shouldn't be surprised, then, given how long my SA 1cc was in coming, that I developed a fondness for Satori and co. This period was rather brief, as UFO came out shortly thereafter, which leads us to:

Nazrin. I can't say just why I like Naz, but I do. It wasn't immediately when I started playing UFO that Nazrin became my fave, but neither did it take all that long.

As for other characters that have moved up in my rankings significantly since I first met them:
-It took me a while to warm up to Eirin after getting to know Udonge. In turn, her mysterious connection with Sakuya eventually caused the latter to rise up through the ranks.
-Meiling, due mostly to that one flash. You know the one.
-I seem to be taking an interest in Patchy recently, but then I've always been fascinated with the Japanese elements. Additionally, the recent Rika's Garage contest reminded me of Koakuma's existence; we'll see where that goes.
-Shou. Association with Nazrin was probably a large factor here. Curvy lasers can go diaf.
-Suwako, now that I've actually played MoF extra.
-Most recently, Ichirin, due in no small part to a few 'Booru pics of her without her hood. Too bad she takes second seat to Unzan most o' the time.

Before MoF, Flandre and Mokou were my two top favorites. Then later MoF came out and Suwako jumped to the top spot. She's still my favorite, but not by a large margin to others that have joined the upper echelons: Yumemi, Nazrin, and Nue. Though I have a lot of people that hover pretty close to the top as well (which I started listing but stopped as the list got too large, derp.)

I drew my top ten Touhou characters back in '08. Referencing that, my top three were, in descending order: Shikieiki, Meiling, Reisen. I think the only chance any new characters have at getting the top spot is if Shiki Eika (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt76RwxTXKY) becomes canon somehow. :3

I believe my favourite curve went like this:

Sakuya -> Alice -> Reisen -> Remilia -> Alice -> Flandre -> Marisa -> Mokou -> Reimu -> Mokou -> Nue -> Shikieiki -> Byakuren -> Aya -> CURRENTLY Nue.

Note that this is just a rough chart. There's probably a lot more shifts between old favourites.

Y'know, I'd go on about who my original favourites were, and how they've changed over time, but... My top five had pretty much always been Wriggle, Yuka, Yumemi, Rin Satsuki and Meiling.  Either I'm boring or I just don't get the same feelings from newer characters that I do from them.

So make that another change.

Shou/Meiling/Marisa/Ran are all pretty top for me right now. They all tend to fluctuate. Except Meiling.

i don't really have a favorite. too many to choose.

i lean twords the touhous that just play around a lot. like Suika, Yuugi and Suwako. the only characters i don't like are the ones that i barely know anything about, namely the early-stage PC98 characters.

if i had to make a list, i guess either Suwako or the Komeiji sisters would be on top.

I'm in Slaves' boat. I like the playful happy-go-lucky characters, but ones with more depth underneath like Suwako. On the surface Suwako is an energetic playful girl, but underneath is a god that has seen over 2000 years of the world's history unfold, once ruled a kingdom, and is now currently living out the rest of her days with an acceptance of the fact that there's always an end to things. That's awesome. Also she's cute, zettai ryouiki, can pull off a number of different personality archetypes well, etc.

Seriously: I started out as a huge Keine fan. That later spread to Tewi/Reisen. Then to become Reimu for quite a long while. I don't have a number 1 spot for a Touhou character. I like them all. Well, almost all of them.

Well, my favorite is currently hina due to facial expressions like this (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/588102/) and this (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/421311/). If you can't tell, I used a silly criteria just so I could have a favorite touhou. :|

All the previous ones were based on either "I can relate to that" or "zomg in love".

Patchy is very cute, and she was somewhat like me in the old days. Now she is just like my imouto. Perfectly.

Sanae... well Sanae. I got to love her after a dream where I dreamed about her and I felt an emotion what I never felt before, and I was unable to feel that emotion again. I only know, it was a divine emotion, beyond all happiness. I identified that as "being in love". After that, she also quickly became more and more of my favorite, thanks to the new "awesome crazy otaku who wants to meet with special people, but still being nice and a good girl" personality of her, what matches my current personality.

For the Fairies, dunno, something about wings, flying, freedom, one with nature, childish purity.

My favorite character was and still is Reisen. I've always been drawn towards the sensible, straight-man types of characters, and she has a compelling backstory and neat abilities. Mokou and Keine are also fairly high on my list, since I started off with IN and got attached to them. I used to like Patchouli quite a lot as a fellow bibliophile, and she's fallen a bit but is still near the top.

After PoFV, I liked Aya because of her free-spirited personality, and Medicine after going through her story route and finding her mannerisms really cute. Yuugi and Parsee grew on me after being stuck on stages 1-3 of SA for a while, and Orin later during stage 5. Also, hardworking kasha moe~

No one really stood out to me in the PC-98 games until I got around to MS. Luize's character design looked cute, so I investigated the wiki and found out that she was just a tourist (then immediately felt bad for beating her up). I also like Kana Anaberal out of the PoDD characters, though I can't really say why.

After UFO, Byakuren and Kogasa immediately went up on my list, and it hasn't changed much since then. I would go on more about why I like those two, but I think I've used enough space already (ーー; )

As for my Favourite Character, I never really had one before SA, when Utsuho became it. That hasn't changed since, and the only real reason I like her is because Im a sucker to the whole Nuclear Power thing. Yeah, she's overrated and all that, but still.

I've always quite liked Shikieiki though. I just like her character design and backstory, so she's always remained my #2 favourite character.

Mine has pretty much always been the Gap trio. I eargasmed to Necrofantasia for a week upon looking up the strongest bosses in Touhou, which led me to download PCB and beat its Extra and Phantasm stages before I could even 1CC SA Normal (Phantasm is still easier than most of the games on Normal mode to me). Patchouli, Byakuren, and the Komeji sisters are also pretty awesome. I don't find too many of the PC-98 characters interesting, since they have no background information and such :|

Wriggle has consistently been my favorite for a while. She's irresistibly cute to me for some reason though I I have no idea why.
When she appeared in Imperishable Night I was all "OMG SHE'S ADORABLE I WANT TO HUG HER SO BADLY!!!!! " .

My second favorite has switched between Keine, Yuyuko, and recently Kogasa every so often though again I don't know why.

Although none of them replaces the best Kappa in Touhou in my fan heart I think there are a couple of standard reasons.
1. A new game comes out (or you just start playing another one) and you are introduced to another set of characters. For example I think I am becoming something of a Shou fan and since she didn't exist on my horizon until I played UFO It would make sense that she rose to take a place in my almost favorites.
2.Being a Touhou fan means looking over fan works and if a good one comes across you may start to understand and like a certain character better. I think the same thing is happening with me and Sanae since I am really digging a couple of remixes to her theme.
3.One's personality subtly changes and one girl's hook appeals better now.

The prominent reason why I'm part of the minority who adores PC-98 characters is because I like their designs. A lot. What can I say? I'm an artist. To me, outward appearance can easily be as much of a deciding factor on whether I'll like a character or not as their actual "character" - background, history, personality, what have you. A character's design plays a major part in first impression, and that's when you'll decide whether or not you're interested enough in this character that you would want to learn more about them, and as a result, like them more. I also find that "design" goes hand-in-hand with "character," meaning if I really like a character, I'll end up liking both of these aspects of that character, regardless of which one I started liking first. Of course, there are borderline cases. For example, I really do think that Sanae looks attractive, but I've never worked with the actual possibilities of her position as a character, and so, at this point, I'd consider her no more than eye candy (apologies to Sanae fans everywhere :ohdear:). But enough of that.

As far as Touhou goes, Marisa Kirisame was the first character that I can honestly say I've taken a liking to beyond just pretty pictures. Not only for how impressive her Master Spark is, but her overall attitude, occupation, and associated musical pieces. It didn't take me long, however, to start looking at the PC-98-era characters. Once I came across PoDD, a certain Yumemi Okazaki caught my attention. From there, she quickly overtook Marisa as my most favorite Touhou character (I'm not so sure how this happened myself, but I suspect part of it has to do with my soft spot for the PC-98 cast altogether). Almost  a whole year has passed, and this position hasn't changed ever since. Despite the fandom being considerably more generous to the former in terms of exposure to fanworks, she still remains on top, while Marisa is still strong on second.

In the end, I don't think I can explain in detail why I truly like certain characters and not others. I could always say "I like her because I really like her design," or "her theme sounds awesome," but I know there'll always be something more to it.

First has always been, and probably will always be Yuyuko.  Hell, I liked her before I had even heard of the series proper.  How that happened is a story for another time, but suffice it to say it involved a certain person on a certain NI board.  Once I actually started playing the games and learned her backstory, well, that just pushed me over the edge.  I still d'awwww at Yukari interactions, and let's not even get started about the music, k?  Suffice to say, <@(?;-D~~~~ = <3.
However, currently second is someone I disliked for a while due to all the bullcrap around her.  This would be Marisa.  Once I actually looked past all the bloody Reimari/Arimari/Marichu shipping, what I found was a character I surprisingly liked.  Here you have a Gensokyan with no superpowers, and through her determination and devotion to the art of nuking things with magic (and, of course, grabbing everyone's stuff) she manages to be one of the biggest badasses in the land.  Yet while that caught my eye with its awesome, what held my attention was her personality.  The everyday Marisa in the canon supplementals and such is just so...well, Marisa.  Of course, my exposure to her actual character may have been delayed due to using Rei-B in every game without playable Yuyuko, so I suppose it's partially due to my playstyle.
Another character I disliked but now makes my top ten is Youmu.  Of course some of the dislike before may have been kind of a personal grudge against her, but to be honest, she's absolutely perfect for the role she has.  I used to think of her as just "that 11yo-looking one who works for Hakugyokurou," but ever since seeing certain depictions, I now consider her the true YN of the series.  While some don't like that kind, I think it's damn cute, and especially fitting for Yuyu-sama's best servant.  And, of course, epic wrath is epic.  Now, if only she didn't pull a Cirno so often...
As for characters that I once thought were all that and have fallen out of favor, I can't really think of that many.  Possibly the Komeiji sisters or Rikako, but for them it's more of a case of others surpassing them than it is of them losing their spark.

Reimu, then Marisa (she's funnier), then Kanako, then Nitori, then Yuyuko, then Parsee, then Utusho, then Nazrin, then Kogasa, then Nue, then Kogasa again, then Reisen, then Eirin, then Nazrin again, then Nue again, then Kogasa again, then Murasa.

It stayed Murasa for a few weeks.

Then Suwako, Patchouli (It's a vitrolic thing), Remilia, Sakuya, Aya, Flandre, then Murasa.

Murasa still.

EDIT: Realized I misinterpreted the topic. Heh.

Yeah i misinterpreted the topic too before i started reading it haha

Well for me it was Reisen -> Mokou -> Remilia -> Suwako -> Remilia (and Flandre to a slightly lesser extent)

When I first got  into Touhou I played IaMP as my first touhou game eva.
I played Reimu and after getting somewhat okay at its gameplay system I got to Remilia. She kicked my ass. Each and every time. I developed that hatred for character bosses that kick your ass even i fyou don't hate the character itself.
Then I played game 6 and lo-and-behold that very same dam vampire was the actual final boss. At first i ws thinking "No wonder she kicked my ass in the fighter she's the final boss"
Remilia kicked my ass even harder in game 6.
Then I played game 8
I managed to get to Reisen and thought that her song was pure epic and it was my first fave touhou song. Her spells however ROYALLY fucked me over! I thought Remilia was just hard! I thought Reisen was near impossible! The bullets shifted in her spells and it became THE hardest thing I ever done. I liked Reisen though since her apperance was that of a bunnygirl in a bussiness suit and skirt. I thought it was funny. Plus those eyes that appear when she does her spells and shifted them I thought was just amazing Even though I found her near impossible to beat! I loved that bunny~

EXTRA was already unlocked so I somehow, after many many tries, finally get to Mokou. I thought she was just badass with her hands in her pockets all the time. She has that "Don't mess with me" attitude. Her song was mellow and calm but strong at the same time, she's immortal and a phoenix. Mokou was tied as my fave with Reisen. I couldn't pick one over the other.

I picked up IaMP again. This time as everyone, I concluded that Remilia was my best char in the game next to Sakuya. Ironic since she kicks my ass 2 ways in both EoSD and IaMP...dam vamp. Then I played her in IN and found her to be my best too with Reimu second.
She didn't beat Mokou or Reisen really until SWR came out. I didn't really like IaMP too much cause it was rather hard to get used to but SWR felt more normal to my idea of controls and gameplay so my strongest char became stronger there. Actually my best at first in SWR was Reimu and Sakuya but they weren't really favorites.

Then the Waifu threads happened and I had to pick Suwako. Shenanigens and roleplay happened and I had a change of heart on Suwako and started to like her as my fave char on par with Remilia. The guy who claimed Remilia gave her up for Medicine and I jumped on Remilia and well....either you know what happened or you don't *coughGpopcough*  ::)

Remilia ended up my fave in the long run and even now. Moreso because of how she plays in the games rather than personality. Granted I do take personality into account. Sure she's selfish, bratty and egotistical but meh a lot of touhou chars are selfish too. Tenshi is exactly like Remilia but lacks Charisma from what her profile says from ZUN's comment on her. I lol.

Underneath Remilia now is:
Flandre, Nue, Komeiji sisters, Minoriko, Yuyuko, Suwako.

This will be a typical response, I suppose... I'm not very effective in short responses, and I take sooo long to finish a detailed one, but I do prefer the latter to make things clear in one post.......................................... *snap* Eh, Anyway!

*In some parts, I have felt that I am only citing the obvious, but... I guess it goes without saying that, following every explanation I made to a character is a "which lead me to liking her more <3".

Yuyuko=Patchouli
Yuyuko: I think because she seems to have a tragic past and now living a carefree-ish life. The first YuyuMyon doujin by CHRONOLOG led me to biting to art cuteness >w<. She has Youmu beside her (to tease on)... and Yukari on the far side (a friend of her past self)... then all the frills in her yukata-like outfit... On the other hand, my YoungestSis likes Youmu the most, so makes YuyuMyon as our default Touhou pairing :3.
Patchouli: being anemic but can cast oh-so powerful spells while wearing long, loose, nighttime-like outfit... I just tend to like someone who has Knowledge as a last name... or in other words, who is simply knowledgeable in...stuff because of reading. Oddly, Patchy with glasses isn't as much favorably for me.
*This is when I was only reading doujin comics and seeing a few fan art... A little tiring about favs because though I do like them, and besides the feeling that I've written this a few times (or so I thought), I'm still in the process of finding the reason why I actually liked them >.<...
*snap* Anyway! Then there was the discovery of Touhou itself...

Reimu=Marisa
I simply can't skip these two heroines.
Reimu: .................................... because she's the heroine? Because of her trusty intuition? Perhaps, but... not quite... (couldn't determine, and it's not the homing Danmaku... no, definitely not that.)
Marisa: Witch fetish |D (not of the pervy stuff, but I just like witches in general), and seeing that she's a nice uke for Reimu, despite seme-ish traits. (or maybe they're both seme... *shakes head*)
*Fanart extends my liking to them (but not "them" only as a pairing, gee o_o;)
... Though when I saw the events & the battle after I defeated Yuyuko, she went top again for making me cry so emotionally ;_;... This is also the part that I accepted that Yuyuko and other charas that my twin friend who introduced me to Touhou liked were actually foes and final bosses in the game.

Rinnosuke=Renko=Luna Child (of the Three Mischievous Fairies) > Reimu > Marisa
This is when I started reading CoLA and SaBND. ZUN's Touhou literature packs a punch of knowledge and food for thought, and it's where I get to know several more canon personalities and stuff, I say.
Rinnosuke: probably influenced by my YoungestSis. He brings a very Gensokyo-ish perspective to the outside-world stuff, and he's the only male able to encounter the rest of the cast in a daily-life setting. I wonder if pairing him to Patchy is a nice idea...
Renko: Astronomy & Physics, a live GPS who is tardy, short black hair, her plain fluffy-skirt black-white uniform, an outside-worlder (in Gensokyo's perspective, that is), Mary's uke... Sana influence added later on.
Luna Child: ... "Waaaah, cute fluffy fairies! >w< I wonder whom I'll like the most among the three." So genuinely, I thought I had to like one of them, which turns out to be Luna Child (I'd like calling her Lunako sometimes, referencing to the Famitsu name of Persona 3 Portable's heroine). I thought she's a nice sidetrack to my usual/apparent "knowledgeable person" liking when I read that Luna was "not the brightest among the three." Her usual gloomy-like face among the two who is usually seen smiling, her fluffy nightgown-ish outfit... Second, the Three Mischievous Fairies as a whole, they linger around the nature of Gensokyo, experiencing the incidents somehow indirectly, and dealing with it in their own little natural ways as fairies.
Reimu getting over my Reimu=Marisa equation: Reading the official novel & comic, this is where I got to know more about Reimu's selfish-y but <something to counter that selfish side of her...caring?>-y personality. Marisa's as well, but I gave way to Reimu, shamefully because she's the main heroine in Touhou (for me).

Then there were the various points during the past year that lead me to the following characters:
Moriya Shrine Family, Kanako>Sanae>Suwako: the thought having two Goddesses as her "parents", influenced by Moriya Shrine Family doujins especially [Personal Color] ones. Just seeing the trio together calms me. Yey Shrinemaiden Sanae for a blue counterpart of Shrinemaiden Reimu! xD "2nd Player Miko", like Letty-sama recorded, minus two words.
Aya: influenced by my YoungestSis. That single "-desu" suffix she said in Touhou fan anime made YoungestSis' Aya hate turn 180?... not that I hated Aya before. That maple leaf she's holding (that somehow represents Fall season, or the fall of dried leaves), her flight with her black crow wings (though everone is able to fly, I found myself liking Aya soaring through the skies...at least in my imagination and a few arts & videos)... She also has Momiji as assistant or subordinate. Tengukami influence added later on.
Mokou Keine as a pair: I grew up on Mokou as I played IN's Extra... What does that have to do with Keine?......... Weird, fluffy |D *shakes head* The thought that she's protecting a human, even thought she knows Mokou is an eternal being. What I'd like to point out too is that, my liking level for Mokou & Keine, with Wriggle & Mystia, is veeery far from the rest of the Eientei cast.
Marisa attains a position higher than Reimu: ...probably because of the several Marisa doujins, discovering that Marisa appeared in the 2nd PC-98 Touhou as a boss (regardless if that was the same Marisa of Windows or not), or just my witch fetish at work, ... or maybe because she's actually human, despite being all magician-related or something... I'm not sure myself, but eh, it's Marisa だぜ(da ze)! (...no, it's not of the "da ze" either...)

Lastly, there's these recent and quick changes of my favorites... not necessarily on top of my fav list but has temporarily occupied the "favorite of the season" slot and has influenced me to raise her in my fav list, if such list exists in me anyway:
Re:Sanae: [GP-KIDS]' and [Personal Color]'s Sanae doujin, & several fanarts... Contrast to GP-KIDS' doujin, I find Sanae as Reimu's younger sister sometimes. Her looks consisting of the colors blue-white (miko outfit) and green (long hair)... Also, Solais influence.
Momiji: Momiji's part on the Bad Apple PV, [Happy Flame Time]'s Cold Wind but Warm Winter, [ciaociao]'s Momiji, the 8-bit SDM in the Early Afternoon video, & a few fanarts)
Sakuya=Remilia >Patchouli >the rest of SDM: my ElderSis Saki's losing inspiration in drawing females, so she asked me for Sakuya stuff (because Sakuya had so far the nearest candidate to having her favorite back-wavy or Nobu-like hairstyle).
*The quick change is mostly because of what I read (doujin comics) or see (fan art) as usual.

I do not hate anyone among the vast number of Touhou cast, by the way.

F... four hours~ @.@ *faints*

Well~
I think, that at first, when all I had was IN, I liked Youmu best. Mainly because of her devotion and ability to endure all of Yuyuko's ditziness, and that she flies around like a maniac and can actually kill things unfocused. But then I tried to beat the Extra stage because all the extra cards were already unlocked in spell practice... So I spent 146 tries just learning Fujiyama Volcano, and Mokou quickly rose to my favorite because of her... kickassness in every aspect. She was the most powerful person that I would be able to fight at the time, her theme was epic, but I was also inspired to do it because of this video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tACAYUgYcBs)

And then I fell in love with Yuyuko because of her backstory, her eyegasmic patterns, and the way that her theme will always match up with whatever pattern you're on unless you're grazewhoring... And, well, the moment I managed to find out everything about her and play through her stage, I almost had an emotional breakdown.

And then I watched this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=majdtmwRWfU&feature=related), And suddenly Yukari rose to my rank 2 spot.

Then UFO was released, and Murasa rose up because she was the highest boss I could get to. And the CAPTAIN MINAMITSU MOTHERFU - right.
When I finally got to Byakuren and read over the scripts, I thought, "Oh, wow, she seems like a really good person. And she has gradient hair. Maybe I can deal with continuing on stage 6 ten thousand times to beat her especially when her theme is pretty epic, too."

Byakuren also got bonus points for Cosmic Mind being the first Touhou song I could play on the piano.

So... Youmu > Mokou > Yuyuko > Murasa > Byakuren.

My favorite characters went from something like Alice -> Reisen -> Medicine -> Yuka -> Medicine -> Sanae -> Alice -> Ichirin

Alice I think I liked because of her name and her personality (canon Alice, not retarded fanon Alice). Then I discovered Reisen and she was pretty cool! I played PoFV and found Medicine and thought she was the coolest thing ever; I've always liked the "creepy toys" idea and a genocidal psycopathic poison doll is just amazing, I think. Yuka I thought was just badass, and I love her cool and collected personality (not a huge fan of the "she's really psycho underneath it all!" idea). Sanae was just cute and her theme is my favorite song in the series. And ICHIRIN <333 I loved from the moment I saw her in the UFO demo; I love her theme, her danmaku, her design, just everything about her is fantastic.

On the flipside, my most hated characters have always been Mystia, Tei, and Kaguya :V

To be honest, I only got into Touhou early this year so I'm fairly new. However my top 3 have stayed consistent for that time.

I got into it through the fanart so my small pool of inital memorable characters included Remilia, Flandre, Marisa, Sakuya, Patchy, Yukari and Komachi.

I liked both Remilia and Flandre but Komachi got me into looking at Touhou more seriously. Not that I was that impressed her, but she looked a hell of a lot like Ushiromiya Ange from Umineko so I was interested in finding out more. Her design grew on me from there on, and after reading her personality she has since stayed as my top favourite.

Yuuka has since been my second favourite, which is surprising because I liked her design, but I was originally put-off by her flower associations. I dismissed her as being a predictable character  :3 Later after reading her profile that changed of course. I also started liking her a whole lot more after realising she was one of the few returning characters from PC-98. I've always like characters that have a long history.

And Shikieiki is still my third. I probably started liking her because I just got use to seeing her with Komachi. But she has an amazing design and somehow she makes being a strict lecturer kinda cool  :V I'm not very keen on some of her fanon interpretations though (midget with bust envy issues ) The characters I'm listing here are based upon canon interpretation.

So my top three favourites haven't actually changed since I considered them as such. I didn't instantly like any of them though.

As for some of the other characters. I never liked Tenshi, Alice, Sakuya, Reimu or Yuyuko until I played more of the games; slowly they became some of my favourites. And because I couldn't afford to buy a lot of games, I started to play the PC-98 ones. Thus making some of those old characters in my top favourites (namely Kurumi, Kana, Elly). They don't get a whole lot of development, but maybe that’s why they can be rather likeable. Renko and Maribel joined the list after watching Kinema Kan's music videos, for once I keep changing whether I prefer Renko or Maribel more- currently Maribel (and possibly because of a certain topic on this forum haha ).

Recently Alice and Kogasa have ascended the list the most, but I don't think my top 3 will be changing any time soon. I'm pretty stubborn  :3

My favorites change over time, and I really don't have an exact list or anything like that but I can say that the first character I liked was Suwako. To this day I can't really remember why she was my favorite, maybe it's because I was introduced to Touhou via Kero 9 Destiny. Nowadays, though, I like all of the characters to a certain degree each, but here are a few that stay at the top of the list.

Momiji: She has stayed at the top of list and will probably stay there forever. I just really seem to like the "Loyal Servant" character. The fact that Double spoiler added more to her personality than the usual "moe puppy" fanon interpretation, made me like her as a character even more. (Plus she looks awesome when genderbent, most of time.)

Mystia: I seemed to enjoy that while Mystia came off as a weak little bird when she is first seen, she turns out to be a scheming chef who uses her powers mostly just for the purpose of getting money. I like to see when characters use their powers outside of danmaku, and I like to think that Mystia is one of the best examples of this.

Nitori: Once again, why I like this character, I can't exactly pinpoint. I think I must have a thing for mechanics or something along those lines.

Marisa > Cirno > Flandre > Reisen > Yukari > Aya > Eirin > Utsuho > Yuugi > Yuka > Eirin/Kaguya/Utsuho

Top three is probably Eirin, Kaguya and Utsuho, with Mokou as a close four, and Aya as 5.

I had the silliest reason for having an aversion to Momiji at first. Didn't really care for a character that was 95% fanmade, completely based off her sprite. Though I got over it eventually.

Ditto there.  Mystia is my favorite, at least for a while.  Aside from her being a scheming genius, her theme is friggin' awesome for a stage 2 boss.

I don't have a favorite touhou character anymore. Even with ZUN's official manga to flesh the cast out, I still find a good deal of them pretty boring. The only ones I even remotely like, I like because of a single well known trait (Such as SCIENCE!). And even then, I don't like them that much. Going back to fleshing out characters, the ones that havn't been fleshed out by ZUN are boring regardless. For those ones, it's like picking a favorite vocaloid without hearing how they sound. You're going off of looks and some sketchy personality info.

On a side note, I might throw Satori on the now empty fav-list if ZUN fleshes her character out a bit more, and the same goes for Koishi. With their unique circumstances, they could make for interesting characters.

I'm starting to lose interest in Reisen as a favorite character. I liked her for her awesome abilities and level-headedness, but now I'm starting to see her more as a... Stereotypical teenager girl.

In CilR, Toyohime tells us "Reisen was exceptionally talented... However, she was also somewhat cowardly and self-centered. Obviously, these were probably fatal traits for a soldier, but we couldn't correct them. As a result, she was fairly uncooperative, and before the time for battle came, she abandoned her duties and fled to Earth." This shows Reisen as someone cowardly and not very mentally prepared for obstacles.
In PoFV, she is largely involved in the plot because she needs to find Tewi. This possibly older-sister relationship just adds a touch of parallelism to the stereotypical teen.
Her SWR profile says "She can change her personality completely to match her circumstances. She is not really very kind..." This kind of change-to-the-circumstances personality could be paralleled with the concept of a teenager's desire to fit in or find the easy path, and her bitterness could be similar to the kind of cold front many might put up in front of their parents or people they dislike.

I know she still has that great sort of sane personality, especially in print works, but I find it increasingly hard to ignore these points. D;

Say, what about your little neighbor? Has her favorite Touhou character changed too or is Reisen still her imaginary friend?

Started at marisa and went to Alice for a long time afterwards. It went to Aya for a bit while I was playing StB, and right now I'd say my favorite right now is Marisa.

All three are my current top 3 however.

I told her than Reisen ran away from the moon, but I don't think she understands its importance. Anyway,  Reisen is undoubtedly gonna be her favorite for a long time.
Although I don't think she has an imaginary Reisen anymore.

The only favorite characters that change are the secondary ones. She switches between Suwako, Cirno, Iku, Aya, Sanae, and Tenshi.
She used to have an imaginary Suwako and Iku, but they went away long before her Reisen did.

My favourite characters haven't changed at all during my time as a fan of Touhou. On the protagonist side of things it has always been Marisa for me, while Shikieiki takes the cake for me in general. They both share powerful and flashy danmaku, cool appearances and dialogue, and they both boast some melodious themes. To broaden the horizons* somewhat I'll also include Amakasu B. Tenji (the guy in my signature) from the ZUN-related mini-game Uwabami Breakers in my list - his theme is the best there ever has been and ever will be. Srsly.  :derp:

*following the formula where (Touhou == ZUN's work || ZUN's work == Touhou) means that Uwabami Breakers is indeed Touhou as well, being a project which includes ZUN's work.

My favorites have changed from when I first became interested in Touhou, but they've been pretty stable for the past few months.  My current favorites are Suika, Okuu, and Parsee.  The Former Hell and everything else underground interest me in general, so I naturally became interested in everyone and everything there.  That's how Okuu and Parsee became my favorites.  I always kind of thought Suika was awesome.  I have specific reasons for liking them; it's not just because of their location (although that helps).

Generally, what I look for when searching for favorites are intriguing personalities and cool character designs (and, to a lesser extent, theme songs).  I actually had this nice big post types out explaining why my favorites were my favorites, but then it got lost and I was sad :<

Flandre at first for me, I mention it in a meme I've done on dA too. But anyway, Flandre managed to come joint second with Remilia, with Sakuya on top (Like every night. Ohoho) and Yukari and Yuyuko came third and fourth respectively. Cirno is fifth.

I can make a few dirty jokes outta my post, I should be shot down for even thinking about it.

Marisa quickly became my favorite character the first time I hit the X button and everything kind of exploded.  They were all like, "I'm shooting at you,"  And she was like, "Nuh-huh, Master Spark!"  And then they were like, "What is this ominous light that threatens to engulf us!"  And then Alice showed up.

From that first Master Spark until the end of Scarlet Weather Rhapsody Marisa was my favorite character.  Then Iku drilled my ass; literally, with her drill attack and Marisa's one where she back's into them hard.  Then she did her pose and it was awesome.  Coupled with her theme she and Marisa was duking it out for my favorite character.

Until I read Inaba of the Moon.  Tewi became my favorite character after that and she's stayed there so far.  Komachi has been inching her way up slowly though.  For a slacker she moved up the third place pretty quickly.  She may make it pass Marisa and Tewi to be my favorite.

I started off a Cirno fan because I saw IOSYS' video and went all "OMGKAWAIIDESULOLOLBAKABAKA" :3

Then I actually started playing the Touhou games more, getting familiar with all the characters. Then my favorite character switched to Eirin because her stage theme and boss theme are just amazing. And when I saw Hourai Elixir for the first time I was like "WHOAAAAA"

Gradually, my favorite Touhou character became Rumia. I really like her boss theme, her silly catchphrase, her signature pose, and for some reason, I like her simple design. The red ribbon is the best hair accessory in the Touhou universe :3
Too bad her stage theme is pretty much :V (except for that one good remix of it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98g4juWeWF8)).  Also, it makes me sad knowing that she'll probably never be in a future Touhou game :ohdear:

Rumia > Eirin > Cirno is my top three, and probably will be for a while.

My favorite character seems to change between three of the girls as it seems.

One day it's Yukari... the next it's Mokou... then it's Rumia. Then it reverts back to either Yukari or Mokou. 'Tis a bit odd I have to say.

Wow, it's been ages since I've posted anything, and during that time, my favourite has changed over time.

I remember the old post I, well, posted, with it being Flandre/Remilia, then Sakuya.

But now, Yukari is at the top, followed by Yuyuko, Byakuren and lastly Sakuya.

I'm not sure if I have a good reason, but Yukari had just seemed to climb her way to the top. I believe it's because she's blonde and oh-so immensely powerful. Maybe I'm attracted to powerful things... I also like how she is portrayed by the fans as a somewhat mature lady, she's beautiful, sexy, and has a mature feeling about her.

Yuyuko, I'm not too sure, she was pretty much tied in the same place as Yukari was at first, but she took second place.  I like her danmaku battles, the patterns, her theme, having her as a last boss fight is amazing.

For Byakuren, I loved they way fans portrayed her as a hot gothic loli girl. Or something. That, and I felt proud of myself to get to her stage on easy... Using a lot of continues to reach her... Probably the hardest Touhou boss I've fought. Oh wait, there's always Yukari in Phantasm Stage...

Can't forget Sakuya, though. I still find her awesome.
