Okay, going to make a separate post for this, but it took a bit less time than I thought to put together a list of what remains. I'm not 100% sure this is everything, but this is everything that is unassociated with the global script file, since that is its own brand of hell with getting it to work with script parsing stuff that I'm going to take a break on to get everything else done.

So, in terms of gameplay/non-story stuff, we have three major .csv files left:

message_kou.csv is the highest priority of the three, as it contains bulletin board messages and other things that mostly serve tutorial or information purposes.
item.csv is mostly done, it already has item names and gameplay-related descriptions done, but there is a lot of flavor text untranslated for them, if anyone wants to do those.
monster.csv is similar to item.csv in that all that's left is the bestiary descriptions for the monsters, as well as the maps they appear on, etc.

I'm going to make some touch-ups to both item.csv and monster.csv before throwing them up, mostly to do the map titles for the monster entries and to fix some awkward translations with some of the accessories (stuff like "Amulet of Raiden" is going to get switched to "Raiden Amulet", etc.). I already made some quiet changes to it in the last patch I forgot to mention (I mistranslated Hakurouken as Shirosakuraken, Resurrection Butterfly as Anti-Soul Butterfly, and Fantasy Nature as Musou Tensei, so I fixed those), but there's still a few things. Plus if anyone sees any weird or awkward translations while playing that they think should be changed, just make a list and I'll go through and fix things. I will be honest, I used machine translation on a lot of stuff, although I made sure to go through and cross-check references and everything, so most of it should be accurate, just maybe awkwardly phrased .

In terms of images, I found everything left to edit and divided it into two groups: Stuff I can edit myself, and stuff that I don't have the skills to edit and will need someone who's better at that than I am to work on. That I'm attaching to this post. I'll put up the .csvs later after going through them myself to fix some stuff, and I'll also try to release a two-part patch tonight, containing any fixes to the .csvs I do, as well as trying to get all of the images left to translate actually translated and inserted.

EDIT: Okay, the .csv files have been gone through and tweaked a bit. Here are the .csvs that I mentioned, if anyone wants to work on flavor text and the message_kou.csv stuff. I'm going to make a build with this version of the files later tonight. In the meanwhile, I'm going to try to get all of the image files that I can edit on my own done and packed with tonight's build.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7EiMC40FKulNVRvZmdvSngzenc/view?usp=sharing

SECOND EDIT: Also on that note, further patches are going to be hosted on MEGA instead of Google Drive. My drive's uh... hitting its limit. I'll probably shift download links around and everything after I take care of the image stuff.

I'll do some search around this script parsing failure with the Global.srb file. Can you give me your strings.csv file, or give me the address of one of those strings, or just write the japanese version so that I can do a search in the srbscan.txt , please ?

With the srb files, it was too much work to just go do the whole script format at once, so I pretty much just decoded each instruction op as needed, until all the scripts I had need of were parsing correctly. IIRC the exe itself handled them as gigantic switch() statements so they were not too difficult to find (just scroll down with olly until you see a crapload of switches), but decoding each one took about 5-15 minutes so I didn't want to do more than needed.

IIRC all the GoS ops that were actually used in its script file were working when I last looked at it, but that doesn't include any of the ones that were not in use then or the ones that were added since.

They're tedious but not that big a deal to add.

Also: if you're using machine translation for skills and stuff, I recommend using Excite's translator over Google's, it's more literal but it tends to be more accurate in general as it's more specialized. Crosscheck with Rikaichan/Rikaikun and off you go.

Okay, I promised a build tonight, and I do have one containing all those changes to the csvs as well as some additional image edits, mostly with the party screen, formation stuff, and the Touhou shikigami. I'm going to do the rest of the shikigami names for the next build, because the image files for the remaining shikigami are huge and I've been Photoshopping for the last several hours (admittedly while watching a friend stream, but the editing would have taken quite a long time even with that in mind). Gotta take a break for the night. x.x;

So MotK being down for quite a bit and being busy with other stuff kind of slowed down the progress I wanted to make. I was hoping to finish up the rest of the image files for shikigami names, but I'm not even done with the first file, and both of the two files take a lot of time to do, so I'm just going to save it for tomorrow. One thing I do want to say however is that I found something out once more about the names of the major antagonists. Well, it's more like bringing back an old argument, but this time around I have some proof to back it up.

A few months back, I suggested that the term for the main antagonists, which most people have translated as the "Three Demon Pillars", to actually mean "Three Demon Goddesses", since "hashira", which can mean "pillar", is also the counter for gods and extremely important figures, like nobles, Buddha, etc. I was told that that's not really how counters work, since the number has to be directly preceding the counter in order for it to actually work, so I didn't really argue despite there being the possibility that it's just an example of irregular use. Flash forward to today, and I found the proof I was correct in the omake file for the game.

Quote
尚、三魔柱の「柱」は、
三魔柱の強さに対する敬意と称号であって、実際の神ではない。
そう、三魔柱は悪魔なのである。

This translates something along the lines of (using the romanization for "Three Demon Goddesses", Sanma Hashira instead of "Three Demon Goddesses", for bias reasons):

"On the subject of "hashira" in the Sanma Hashira,
It is a title meant to respect their strength, but they are not actually goddesses.
So, the Sanma Hashira are just demons."

So in the end, it is literally just irregular usage of a counter kanji in order to make a title while also implying that while they are being referred to as a mighty title, they aren't anything special themselves.

Along those lines, the translation of the main antagonist people (even myself) have been using is also somewhat erroneous. Everyone has been referring to her as Angra Mainyu, directly using the name of the actual Zoroastrian deity. However, "Angra Mainyu" is not usually katakanized as "アンラ=メーノーグ", which is the name that appears in the game. The omake again confirms that in reality, the name in English would be Angra Menog. This actually has some minor roots in Zoroastrianism itself. The word "mainyu" is a term that roughly means spirit. However, there is another form of the word, "menog", which means roughly the same thing, but is how the word is used in what I think is another language, or it was how it was spelt by another group of people. The same people who use "menog" are the same people who use the more familiar name for Angra Mainyu (in our modern culture, at least), Ahriman. So, long story short, Angra Menog is a sort of mix and match of different words meaning roughly the same thing, without directly saying that it is Angra Mainyu being referred to. When you think about it, that was similarly done in Genius of Sappheiros. The names of the Gorgon Sisters include the names of the original gorgons from Greek mythology, but they have a different name that is the main name used for them (Medusa becomes Lithos, Stheno becomes Anastasis, and Euryale becomes Biotopos).

tl:dr "Three Demon Pillars" should really be "Three Demon Goddesses", and "Angra Mainyu" should be "Angra Menog".

Very hype! Awesome to hear the images are getting rocked through. I'm probably going to start playing this after I get through more of Etrian Mystery Dungeon (likely sometime this weekend), I played the heck out of GoS (400+ hours over two playthroughs, all of the heck) so if I notice anything weird I'll bring it up. You did say you cross-referenced, though, so I don't expect to find much off!
<mauvecow> see this is how evil works in reality, it just wears you down with bureaucracy until you don't care anymore

One other thing is that I tried to add in the messages for the tutorial battles early on that say stuff like "oh the enemy is regening due to Dark land power" and everything, as well as the "The party was defeated" message. Except both cause a script parsing failure and will crash the game upon finishing a battle or coming to those messages (the log for globalscript.exe even says that the script failed to parse). I don't know why these particular lines are causing the script to fail to parse, but they are, so they are untranslated to avoid any messes with that. I don't know if it's a problem with the global script file, or what, but unless that can get fixed, those lines are going to have to remain untranslated.

Try to replace the line 874
Code: [Select]
ScriptParser parser(data + s_i->second.start, s_i->second.size);with :
Code: [Select]
ScriptParser parser(data + s_i->second.start, s_i->second.size - 4);It works with the strings you gave me, but if I misunderstood something, it may break everything with the other strings. If it does, I already have in mind another idea to fix it.

I ran it on all of the strings I have so far, and they work completely fine, both the ones that were working before and the ones that are working now. Thank you again for fixing things with this! I should be able to get more done with the Global.srb file at some point. I still want to get those image files done, and there's a few fixes I've been making to some translations in the item.csv and monster.csv, which are all going to be in the next build. I should be able to actually get that up tonight as long as I finish those files.

EDIT: On that note, opinion asking time! I've been staring at the options on the right side of the screen on the main menu, and they were part of the images files that I personally am unable to edit because I don't have the skills to clean them personally. Then I remembered that Marisa's Kirisame Magic Shop did an interesting thing where the menu options were in Japanese, but had English subtitles under them for... some reason, despite the fact the game was Japanese in general. You got me there on what Strawberry Bose was thinking, but I have experimented with doing the same for the option image file for DoD. Here's the results in-game.

Should we go for that as a temporarily solution until someone is able to make a proper cleaned version, or should we go with this period, or just not use it at all? Lemme know, I'll possibly throw it into the next build. Other than that, I have one more image file I can personally do myself, then the rest are pretty much beyond my skill unless I figure out how to clean some of them up (I have an idea as to how to do the header files for the character names on the equipment setup screen, but I'm not sure if it'll work out too much).

So I got the images done that I wanted to, finally, as well as all the changes and fixes I wanted to make to translations. The Global file also got a few more lines translated, including the ones that weren't working before, so all-in-all this is another general update of stuff. I also included the image translation from above, in case anyone wants to see how it looks in the game itself, but if it doesn't really work out, I can easily remove it in the next build of the patch.

Version 0.04 ahoy!

Also, just as a note, that's all of the image files I can personally do without it being kind of stupidly hard for me to edit. Well, actually, I might be able to do the title screen stuff, but other than that, that's pretty much it. I'm going to keep on with doing Global.srb stuff, but I've almost reached the limit of what I can do myself.

Having the subtitles on the menu is certainly better than going without, at the least. Looking forward to testing this myself within the next few days.

So on a hunch, I started going through some of the larger .srb files other than the global files. Turns out that's where the messages concerning getting the hookshot and other stuff are. That's great and wonderful. That also means there is a very good chance that the messages saying that a shikigami or master joined your party is ALSO in those files. And there's over 1000 of them to go through just to see if that's the case or not.

Safe to say right now I am not going through 1000+ files right now to try finding any more messages like that. I'm just going to at least, for the next version, put in the ones about like the hookshot and barrier release, etc, so that they're THERE, but other than that... ugh. I really don't know where to look for the messages like "xxx joined your party". I can try something with like... a text hooker to see if they reveal anything (sometimes they can show what file is being read to produce a line of text), but no promises.

EDIT: Turns out the stuff for character recruitment was in a csv file I thought was nearly useless and thus I never took a good look at it. However, it's EXACTLY what controls the text for when you recruit a shikigami or something in a cutscene. This is another big development in terms of finding important messages like that. This should be mostly all of what's left in terms of gameplay-related messages. Next version will be about getting as much of that translated as possible.

So, once more going through stuff on the Global script, and things are for the most part fine, but yet even with the fix to the .exe that brilion gave for it, there is another set of lines that's popped up out of all of the ones I've added that's caused another script parsing failure, which is interesting, because I threw in a lot more lines to edit (currently the amount of lines that needed a translation/edit is about 128 lines). The lines causing issues are:

Code: [Select]
Global_orig.srb: 12b91a: '%1% が仲間になった。'
Global_orig.srb: 12bac6: '%1% が仲間になった。'
Global_orig.srb: 12c064: '%1% が仲間になった。'

Dunno why. There's about seven or so separate party recruitment lines like this, but these three are the only ones causing problems. I'll give a log of the computer readout too:

So it's everything at the section at address 0x0012a388, which includes those three lines. Note, this is with that fix that brilion gave before. It's that specific section that's not working, and I don't know why. For now I'll do what I did before, and just remove those strings from the strings.csv before recompiling.

I guess in the meanwhile (sorry for the double post), I'll get today's build up now. I've inserted everything I've been able to find so far, which to be honest wasn't as much as I thought I was able to find. I've pretty much exhausted Global.srb in terms of things I can translate and insert into the game. The rest of the messages that haven't been translated I am almost positive are in one of two places: Either they are in message_kou.csv, which I have not made any changes to as of the moment because I prefer someone with better translation skills than I have to handle those, or they are in one of the 1000+ script files that I have yet to scratch the surface of. I was lucky to find what I was from the one file, specifically 03004.srb, but that again is a lucky find. There are still so many files that might yet have a message I've been unable to find, but until I actually sit down and look through those one at a time, I won't find anything else.

So here's where things stand in the meanwhile. Most of the images have been translated, and at this point the .zip containing images I didn't think I had the skills to do is slightly out of date, because I was able to edit at least a few of those, not to mention the party image I put in there does not need to be translated because I found a translated version of it in DennouNeko's work, so that solves that. Really, it's the options menu, the bestiary, and the character headers that remain in terms of images, at least from my understanding. In the version of the patch I'm about to link, I did the title screen stuff, so that's something new, at least, not to mention the menu options in regular gameplay I included in last night's patch.

In terms of messages, like I said, what remains are the stuff in message_kou.csv and whatever is hidden amongst the 1000+ .srb files. Any other remaining text would be either the bestiary descriptions of monsters, or flavor text for equipment. After that is purely story. There are two story-related things in the Global.srb, specifically the ending and the final boss text (Angra going "ahahahah it's been 342 years since I had a battle like this" and whatnot), but other than that, everything else is in the SCN files, which I've handed off to Synnae, who's told me in PM that he (she? Sorry, I could never remember if you were male or female. X_X) knows some friends who might be able to work on those. If anyone else wants to take a crack at those, be my guest, I'll send you the stuff in PM, just let me know.

Other than that, yeah. The patch is coming along very nicely, in my opinion, but unfortunately this is about the limit of what I can do alone. I need help from this point on, no doubt about it. I simply do not have the Japanese knowledge to translate the story files, or the flavor text. If I did, I wouldn't be asking for help with that. Neither do I have the skill in Photoshop to translate the remaining images. I'm no good at cleaning images or anything. I can obviously make any touchups to translations that need touching up, I'm always able to do that, but otherwise my role from here on out is just organization and putting the patch together when changes are made.

I'll be taking a break for the next couple days probably, I've got college stuff I have to worry about and everything, signing up for my second year classes, getting a major transfer, doing homework, fun stuff like that, not to mention I want to continue the run of the game I've been doing to make sure everything's working out with all these translations and file changes. I'll eventually get around to searching through the srb files to look for more stuff to edit, although none of these messages are, in my opinion, critical to understanding the game. Most of what's needed is already there.

With that said, version 0.05 away!

EDIT: I will announce something else that I do want to work on while there's not much else for me to do with the DoD patch until people can come on board. I've been thinking of what else to work on, and I know that someone wanted me to do something with Phantasmal Summoners, and that is a fair point, I should work on that at some point. There's something else I want to work on first, though, something that will be easier to do in my opinion since most of the translation work has been done for the gameplay aspects of it, and it should be easy to port most of that over. So here's a minor teaser of the next thing I'm going to be working on:

I don't really want to spent 2 months on reverse engineering the game to fix the script parser, so... let's try to ignore the byte raising an error.

Replace the lines 336 and 337 :
Code: [Select]
case 0x00:
break;
with :
Code: [Select]
case 0x00:
case 0xd1:
break;

Finally took the time to start testing this, been mostly working on college stuff and starting on my little side project thing I teased. The strings that weren't working before are working now, I just need to check if it crashes the game when I get to a party recruitment scene. If it does, then this fix won't work, and there's not much I can do. I'll be honest, the fastest way to reliably check this is to start a new game and rush to the first boss, which is like... a five-ten minute process that's sort of annoying, but there's not much else I can do.

But it does indeed work out as intended. I don't know what's up with that j, I think it's a font thing that I have absolutely no control over, but it is working as intended, so that takes care of the party recruitment stuff. Thanks once more brilion for helping, sorry for running into all these problems like this. I'll get a new patch version out, but since it's going to be really minor, I'm just going to make it an update to the game.pak, so you do need the prior patch for it. I'm also going to fix two skill titles, Blood Suck (which should be Blood Drain), and Full Moon Revenge (which should be Chaotic Flowerfall, since it is written the way it is written in Romancing SaGa 3, compared to GoS where it was literally written as Full Moon Revenge, and as much as I've been trying to be consistent with GoS, I also want to be accurate to the kanji, and if it's meant to be referencing the skill from Romancing SaGa 3, I'm going to change it to the translation of that skill name).

EDIT: So here's version 0.05a. As the name implies, you need to apply it over version 0.05, since it does not contain the image files in it, just the game.pak.

Validon98, thanks for all the hard work you've put towards the patch! I've already played through the game twice already; Once on Feast and the second time through Banquet. My friend who's playing through the game right now will probably really appreciate the patch.

If you ever need the files for Banquet, please PM me. I hope someday you'll complete this patch, and that Banquet can get cracked.

I'm 14 hours into the game (because I'm silly) and this is what I've got so far in terms of weirdness.

Weapon Breath -> Weapon Bless
Shikigami passive skill (example:chen) "Casting Speed When Physically Attacked +10%" is actually just an increase to the casting speed of your own physical attacks, I'm pretty sure.
Gramary Buster (blunt skill) doesn't seem like a correct translation, but I wouldn't know what it should be. Original txt: グラマリーバスター
Bone Crash (also blunt) should probably be Bone Crush.
Demon Bane (sword skill) should probably just be Demonbane?

And the hookshot obtain dialogue isn't translated. Also, passives that affect 6+ elements should have the element names abbreviated, or else it runs way out of the box. If it's only 4 elements or less, it should be fine as-is, unless you want to go for consistency.

Overall, going pretty great :D

@Weapon Bless: ...Oh wow I'm bad.
@Chen's passive (she's the only shikigami with that specific one): That... actually makes more sense given Chen's usual speediness otherwise.
@Gramary Buster: I... seriously don't know what it is either. I tried looking up other things, and that's the only thing that made remotely any sense. Gramary as a word is an old word referring to magic or occult practices, which sort of fits in line with it lowering POT as a skill, but I don't know, it's a weird translation.
@Bone Crush: Yeah, I need to fix that one.
@Demonbane: I suppose that makes some more sense.
@Hookshot dialogue: Okay, the hookshot dialogue... I thought the file I found inserted at least the "Hookshot was obtained." part. The message after getting it that says what it does is in message_kou.csv, which I haven't touched because while it has a lot of gameplay-related stuff, I'm not confident in my ability to translate it.
@Elements: I see what you mean about that. I'll see what I can do about that too, since there are quite a few passives that go over because of listing out all the elements. And I don't have a problem with shortening the names of the elements when it lists out a lot of them, it's not like people won't understand what they are.

I've also made a few minor changes here and there to some of the translations again, and I have to make a few more (I remembered some things like "Hammer of Heat" and "Rod of Wizard" are still in, which should be "Heat Hammer" and "Wizard Rod" to make things less awkward), so I'll be trying to work on that when I get the chance. I have to put together a creative portfolio for applying to transfer to a game design major, so that's going to be occupying some of my time today, but I'll try to get out a version 0.05b later.

I might also make a new thread for my side project, since I'm starting to make some amount of headway on that, in case people were interested.

Nice :3

I just got SHINZO and cast his skill Psychic Field, which increases physical resistance; the inbattle popup text instead said that it strengthens physical attacks (which it definitely didn't, they started doing almost no damage)

Oh... oh woooooow. I have no idea why I translated it that way. Well I have something in cond.csv to fix now! :'D

EDIT: ...And the actual description of the field effect I translated properly as "Increases Slash, Stab, and Strike resistance." I... okay so I am bad with consistency, jeez.

Armor Breath to go along with Weapon Breath, as I just got Sunflower Fairy who starts with it. That'll probably be all for now :V

...So I ended up finishing making all those changes much faster than I thought I would, so hey, why not? Version 0.05b's here. Like Version 0.05a, it is only the game.pak, so if you want images and everything, you need to download 0.05, then apply 0.05b on top of it.

Download is here!

Demon Blast skill:It says the Dark Land must be greater than neutral. However, neutral land is fine (I just cast it); perhaps it should say "The Dark land power must be Neutral or higher."

Also, when you're walking around in the first part of Stratum 3 and the wind blows you away when you try and walk the wrong direction, the popup message says "It didn't look like we could go here before.", which doesn't quite make sense. Maybe more like "It doesn't seem like we can go that way now."?

I quickly fixed both things, but I'm going to hold off on releasing a 0.05c until there's more mistakes to fix. Thank you for letting me know about this stuff though, Selera, it's much appreciated. :D
