Is it bad I'm more excited for the Octo Expansion DLC than Smash 4 Switch itself? I mean, don't get me wrong, this is a pretty impressive reveal, but I'm not much of a Smash player.

That said, I'm predicting that Smash will have an emphasis on a tag mechanic, perhaps like Pokemon Trainer meets Marvel vs. Capcom. I'm not sure if that'd work well, but given Nintendo's current MO is to innovate the crap out of their franchises now, it wouldn't surprise me.

Then again I'd be perfectly fine with it just being a port of Smash 4. That game is huge and I'm sure Wii U/3DS owners would appreciate having a Switch version. Just add in a story mode with less crappy level design and we're good. :V

I'm wondering if Sakurai still has his hands on the project after so many comments on how he is done with Super Smash Bros.

I for one cherish this announcement. I spent countless hours on the original and Melee and while I didn't really play Brawl and the WiiU/3DS iteration due to my lack of owning a Wii and WiiU, I was looking forward for a Switch version. The question if we get a new SMB wasn't really a question because SMB is a gold mine and one of the flagship titles of Nintendo. Not releasing a new Super Smash Bros. on their new hot selling console would be like throwing money out of the window.

This chaotic series is very funny to play and is worth to continue.

I got my Switch all of yesterday, just before the Nintendo Direct.

Even though I've only briefly touched on the series since the original, these games have always been a blast to pick up and party with. The core notion of the series just works so well and the games are consistently fun regardless of skill level. Definitely something to look forward to.

Is Ness still good? Can I still beat my 11 year old brother with Ness? He plays as Samus.

I'm really not sure why of all the newcomers coming with the base game
No Piranah Plant dosn't count it's pre-order/DLC
they decided to keep the most obvious and easy to guess newcomer for last.

Belmont or even K.Rool being last would have been so much more hype than

I know Sakurai implied they'd already decided the DLC, but announceing this so early on dosen't look the best. [Content being held back ect]. I mean, this wouldn't be coming until after Plant.

Also it seems REALLY strange that a Switch-Exclusive has a PS4-exclusive rep. Unless suddenly P5 is getting ported to Switch.

That said if this is actually happening... I am hype.

Edit: Looked up the source ect of where this was aired. It's happening.

Also from what I can tell Sakurai has previously said he's a massive Persona fan. So... what else is Sakurai a massive fan of that's not already in Smash? We might be able to discern other DLC's; especially as they appear to be coming in packs. In before he's a secret Touhou fanboy and we get Reimu or Marisa in Smash

So; something I'm seeing a lot of discussion over is the Final Smash.

A lot of people are saying 'obviously All-Out Attack' but the catch is the trailer specifically says Joker went alone so a lot of potential for that is gone IMO.

Which makes the obvious path somewhat spoiler for people who haven't played P5; in Sataniel. Especially if he's strictly using Arsene in Smash.

The third option IMO is a bit more abstract and is basically Joker changing the enemy's heart by stealing their treasure. Maybe he throws a calling card to trigger it and if it hits that fires the cinematic. This is actually my personal favorite, especially if they put in the work to give every character a different 'treasure' to be stolen.

I have high hopes for SSBU to do what P4A did and have Arsene turn into
Satanael
for Joker's FS. Though
Sinful Shot
, visually, would seem too close to Link's Ancient Arrow FS if that was the case; If it isn't, then Megidolaon or Riot Gun would probably also make sense (since those are his skills in P5).

Having so few characters unlocked at the beginning is annoying. It means everyone gets really excited when we unlock someone because there's finally a new character to play with (which results in everyone piling on Ice Climbers for quad-Ice Climbers action) but I wish there were still a lot more to start with. Specifically Wario. Why can't I just play as fuckin Wario?

This game feels fantastic, I'm glad because 4 felt weirdly floaty and delayed.
Out of the characters we unlocked, I really liked K Rool, Inkling, and Isabelle.
K Rool seems really good, he even has that grounding down throw thing that seems like an auto kill at higher percents.
Inkling is the best idea ever, love playing her. Wish you could refill ink at anytime though.
Isabelle seems like she would be really annoying to play against, with her trap, fishing pole, and ranged aerials.
Really fun, looking forward to unlocking everyone.

I've been focusing so far on farming the Spirit Board as much as possible, which hasn't left a lot of time to check out the new characters (the only one I've gotten around to was Incineroar, who was reasonably fun and amusing but nothing world-stopping). That being said, blowing through Spirit Board challenges with Roy and Little Mac has been insanely satisfying, and I've laugh many a true laugh at some of the creative and hilarious ways Nintendo has come up with to represent the Spirits with the existing playables and other mechanics.

If I'm salty about anything, it's that my game's RNG left the Palutena unlock for dead last.

Speaking of, Japan did as Japan does (https://kotaku.com/japanese-smash-bros-players-show-palutena-doesnt-get-u-1830977919). (Mildly NSFW)

I ended up using Assist Killer and
Made Of Metal since I didn't get First-Strike Advantage until quite a bit later. It did eventually work, but it took almost 30 tries even after that.

The win wasn't even satisfying, it just felt like the inevitable result of brute force attempts and not like, a good strategy or good play on my part. Calling that battle three stars is a joke, none of the four star battles I've seen so far even come close to being that bad...

I like Wario too.

I've played a bit of Corrin and kinda like him/her but that opinion could change.

Bayonetta got nerfed from Smash4; I know that for sure. But she was the Queen of the game [Even #2, Cloud, generally being ranked quite a bit under her] That's probobly why she feels bad, they decided now she's not Pay2Win [Also Cloud] to nerf her hard to bring her back in line and potentially buff her after.

And yes; with the state of Bayo/Cloud in Ultimate v Smash4 I'm pretty confident in saying their balance state and the fact they were left in that state was intentional P2W. [Smash 4 was pretty notorious for basically boiling down to Cloud v Bayo]

I really don't like Lucario, Mario, Ness and Lucas. Mario has 2 very situational specials, and the rest of his kit is... well... not outstanding. Lucario feels clunky and I hate Ness/Lucas' recovery.

Well, Cloud and Bayo were both nerfed. Cloud's nerfs were minuscule outside of removing aerial FT's solo kill power, so that's one thing, but they nerfed Bayo pretty solidly and her results fell for a while until picking back up later only after patches stopped coming. S4 patches stopped because dev for Ultimate started, so basically they abandoned ship too soon after releasing Bayo and didn't stick around long enough to see how the character would settle. I really think if patches kept coming they likely would have been nerfed more but they shifted focus entirely to Ultimate, unfortunately resulting in a pretty stale and sour meta by the end of S4.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. (2018) announced
Post by: commandercool on January 07, 2019, 03:01:35 PM
This is an argument that I always hate but can't help but feel like I have to make in this case: If you're going to put Bayonetta in your game you're kind of obligated to make her kick ass. I'm not saying she should be intentionally better than all the other characters or imbalanced, but she should be good and feel good to use. Bayonetta is not an underdog and making her one feels wrong.

That said I didn't play any of Smash 4 so I never had to deal with her being overpowered, but over-nerfing isn't ever a fun or good solution.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. (2018) announced
Post by: Drake on January 07, 2019, 11:45:15 PM
Every character should be kick-ass, which is why this game already feels so good to play for the majority of people. Compared to Smash 4's early days they're off to a very good start in terms of balance and making characters feel useful.
Title: Re: Super Smash Bros. (2018) announced
Post by: commandercool on January 08, 2019, 12:44:56 AM
Yeah, there are a bunch of characters I don't like playing as (enough that I stopped setting my character to random after a certain point because there are so many I don't want to see) but it's pretty clear that most if them are good, they just feel weird to control.

Bayonetta doesn't really feel like Bayonetta to me, but as someone who's been playing a ton of Bayonetta 2 lately I think a lot of that might just come down to her lack of different weapons. I know you can only cram so much stuff in a Smash Bros character since they're relatively simple, but no whip is unfortunate. And it feels like a big missed opportunity to not give her a Chain Chomp.

Edit: How do I consistently do Wario's "high ten" move where he puts both hands over his head? I can only do it about one out of ten tries, the rest of them keep coming out as up smashes or jump attacks. I'm probably overlooking something obvious but I can't figure it out and that move seems important.

They're called tilt attacks; as the name suggests you do them by tilting the stick in a direction and hitting attack, as opposed to smash attacks where you "smash" the stick and attack. With default controls uptilts are definitely harder to do than other tilts because you can also tap up to jump.

Ways to change your controls to make it easier to do include
1) Turning off tap jump so you aren't jumping when you press up (many people do this)
2) Changing your c-stick to do tilts instead of smash attacks (most people also do this)
3) Changing your stick sensitivity to Low which makes the stick input more lenient for tilts and more strict for smashes

3) Changing your stick sensitivity to Low which makes the stick input more lenient for tilts and more strict for smashes

Ooooh gotcha! I did not know that was a mechanic. Messing around with it in training I found the easiest way to do it was to buffer the up input, but obviously there's a lot of downside to doing it that way. I'll consider changing the controls, although I might just confuse myself doing it that way. Low sensitivity might work since I often use the right stick for smashes.

Tap jump is one of those convenient features I can't bring myself to use since going back to melee if I get used to it would be a bitch. If they ever remake it, I hope they include it.

Speaking of up tilts, I'm really happy they finally made Ganon's up tilt not take like 10 seconds to do. Also they gave him a sword, so happy.

Weirdly I have little~no trouble doing Tilts; it's Smashes I have trouble performing.

Well; Ganon's a different incarnation than before. I'll admit I'm not a Zelda expert, so I can't recall *which* Ganon it is now.

Just like Link is BotW Link now.

To be fair to this point; apparently Sakurai has said if any character besides Kirby could have survived Galeem at the start, it was Bayonetta and Palutena. Kirby only survived because he warp stared out of reality.

Kirby was the survivor because he's a simple character and Sakurai.

Likewise this is why Palutena and Bayonetta are among the last characters unlocked in Spirit Mode and even seem to be the villian's final resorts [As well as the fact Bayo/Palutena are basically opposites]

I'd rather something over-nerfed and brought back up than being broken to the point of making the game unfun.

Man, Ganondorf is the most fun. His rework is perfect.

How heavy is Rob? He's slow, but he feels like he dies incredibly early. Like Pichu early. I kept dying at like 50% with him earlier. Maybe there were weird circumstances and I'm just wrong, but I assumed he was super heavy and now I'm wondering if he's just slow and also light.

I got all the characters bar 1 after Palutenia randomly SD'ed.

I've lost to Cloud like 5 times I can't even kill him at 180%.

Finally beat World of Light. The last boss is pretty fun. And just difficult enough to offer challenge without being too frustrating, at least for my skill level. Still gotta go back and collect some spirits I skipped though.

Joker's out todaaaay! He looks super cool and interesting and his stage looks amazing. So much fan service.

His final smash is All Out Attack, and he still slits his opponents' throats at the end but instead of a geyser of blood they spray sparkles everywhere. Oh Nintendo. :D

From what little I know of competitive Smash; Joker's been performing really; really well already.

I really hope this isn't Bayonetta/Cloud all over again with a [paid] DLC character happening to be OP... 3 in a row might just start really looking like P2W.
