Title: RaNGE Contest #18: Extra Love
Post by: ExPorygon on October 01, 2017, 12:00:57 AM
RaNGE 18 is here! To celebrate this contest series' coming of age, we have planned something a little...extra.

By extra we mean extra stages - this contest will cover any and all Extra bosses from main series Touhou games. This contest is designed to have a large pool of options to choose from so that people are bound to find something they enjoy. There aren't many restrictions beyond which character you can use, so have fun!

RULES
*All scripts must have a minimum of 6 patterns, with each nonspell or spell being one pattern.  To accommodate the fact that these are extra bosses, the maximum is 18 patterns. Please remember that quality beats quantity, though, and adding patterns for the sake of having more is discouraged.
* Multiple difficulties are allowed. Judges are not obligated to play all difficulties and will likely pick one that matches their skill level, so be sure each one is balanced!
* Midbosses and stages are optional. If a midboss is present it may have up to 3 patterns. Midbosses must be from the list below, but they don't need to "match" the boss they were assigned to in the official Touhou game.
* Valid Bosses are Rika, Mugetsu, Gengetsu, Alice Margatroid, Flandre Scarlet, Ran Yakumo, Yukari Yakumo, Fujiwara no Mokou, Suwako Moriya, Koishi Komeiji, Nue Houjuu, Mamizou Futatsuiwa, Raiko Horikawa, Hecatia Lapizlazuli and Okina Matara. Mugetsu and Gengetsu need not be together.
* Valid Midbosses are Mysterious Orb, Trump King, Patchouli Knowledge, Chen, Ran Yakumo, Keine Kamishirasawa, Kanako Yasaka, Sanae Kochiya, Kogasa Tatara, Nue Houjuu, Benben Tsukumo, Yatsuhashi Tsukumo, Doremy Sweet, Mai Teireida and Satono Nishida. Midbosses that appear together in the original game need not be together, and midbosses need not "match" the boss.
* If done in Danmakufu or otherwise, script errors or other bugs may lead to docked points or complete disqualification depending on the severity of the issue. Be sure to thoroughly playtest!

JUDGES
ExPorygon (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5069) & Trickysticks (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5010)

Scripts will be judged with the vast majority of the score attributed to the quality of danmaku. Visual effects and music are nice, but they are ultimately secondary to your entry's gameplay. Post your entries in the thread when they are ready to be submitted.

Actually, shouldn't Marisa count, being a Extra Boss in GFW?
Goes to yell at Tricky some more

Marisa is a protagonist first and extra boss second, at least that's what we thought when we decided not to include her. Plus GFW is a spinoff of sorts. We figured sticking to the list posted would be better for the contest.

It's alright to make a fight against both of them, they just don't need to be together if you'd rather just do one or the other.

I think I'll join this too. It'll be a nice chance to practice making a script with proper Touhouesque visuals. If its at all relevant, I'm planning to use Chen Midboss, Alice Boss.

While I don't think my script will run afoul of it either way, I do have a question about the definition of a "pattern".

...with each nonspell and spell being one pattern...
.
Does this mean that a pair of Non Spell>Spell Card is one pattern, or would they be considered two patterns?

Typically, each nonspell is a pattern, and each spell is a separate pattern. Given that the max number of patterns is 18, I believe that this holds true for this contest.

Each individual attack, be it a nonspell or a spell or some weird mix of the two, is a pattern. For example a typical extra boss has 8 nonspells and 10 spells or 18 patterns total.

Ah, alright. I take it this means that a brief spell/nonspell which isn't an attack wouldn't count as a pattern, then?

I'm not sure what you mean, are you referring to something like the "fake" Alice nonspell in PCB that ends on its own after a few seconds? If so, I don't really know what category that would fall under. I would probably not count it as a pattern for purposes of counting.

...with each nonspell and spell being one pattern...
Sorry for the confusion, I just modified the first post to fix that typo. It should read:

...with each nonspell or spell being one pattern...

That's two contests in a row where I've had a 'script' that I've been working on for months that would work perfectly with all of the rules... but I feel like rushing against the time limit is one of the best parts of these types of contests so I'm gonna start something new.

If we put a gimmick into our script like HSiFS's release system would the patterns be judged as though they were played without it, would they be judged based on how well it works with the gimmick, or is there an unspoken rule against gimmicks in these contests? Right now I'm just brainstorming ideas and a few of my ideas rely on gimmicks from the main games in order to be somewhat enjoyable or designed well, but I have no clue if I should actually use such a thing.
Title: Re: RaNGE Contest #18: Extra Love
Post by: Trickysticks on October 03, 2017, 10:49:07 PM
If it's something like Cirno's freezing gimmick or ISC's cheat items then it's fair to make using the gimmick mandatory and design the patterns with the gimmick in mind.
Using HSiFS's releases (or cherry borders or other things like that) and shooting literal walls you HAVE to release to get through is a bit iffier to me, but miiight be okay if done right.

It's really subjective but a gimmick done right is really cool. If you have ideas that rely on gimmicks and want to try it, give it a shot!

Are we allowed to have multiple bosses/midbosses from the list on screen?  Either each with their own health bar or with a shared healthbar
I was thinking of midboss Chen and Ran and boss Ran and Yukari

And playable character Seija

Yes. Try not to go overboard with this and have 9 different bosses with one lifebar each or something ridiculous like that though.

Alright, I'm joining in. Will be the first stage script I make, probably won't be very good, but a good learning motivator anyway.

Unfortunately with exams coming up I've lost all motivation to code, and I have some other danmakufu projects to attend to. I'll be looking forward to playing the entries.

Valid midbosses are any of the following:
Mysterious Orb, Trump King, Patchouli Knowledge, Chen, Ran Yakumo, Keine Kamishirasawa, Kanako Yasaka, Sanae Kochiya, Kogasa Tatara, Nue Houjuu, Benben Tsukumo, Yatsuhashi Tsukumo, Doremy Sweet, Mai Teireida and Satono Nishida

As a general note, I expect that you don't require 40 MB of sound effects in your general script folder and then 32 MB of sound effects for your player, so it would be good for people who want to play your script if you could remove all of the duplicate/unneeded sound effects in your entry. Half of your entry's file size is composed of sound effects.

I just updated my script with some minor visual implementations, DL link is still the same.

***EDIT***

Well fuck, I be damned. Forgot to uncomment the boss scene section in the plural script after some effect testing. Fixed now, new file will be up in a couple of minutes.

***EDIT 2***

New download is up.

I'll definitely be doing the same, so don't worry about making updates as long as they're before the deadline.

Hello everyone. I'm planning on doing a livestream of all the entries probably on Thursday, October November 2, or Saturday, October November 4th.

At that time, I will need to know what kind of video you would like from me. If you would like me to do a Let's Play video, I will record part of the stream for later upload. If you qualify for a DNHArt video and would like one, play through videos will be made most likely after the conclusion of judging. Please PM me if you want one of the above.

There is also a chance I will just record the entire stream as-is and upload that, but there is a much higher chance for desync/crappy quality/huge file size/other problems if I do that, so don't count on all of my runs being uploaded. Additionally, if I do an exceptionally bad job at playing your script or of your script experiences issues (e.g. crashes, music glitches, copious 0, 0 spawning, undefined and unexpected behavior, etc), I will not post the let's play to Youtube even if you requested it.

I will be downloading all the entries from my compilation list here:
https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=21068.msg1364806#msg1364806

I will stream to https://go.twitch.tv/sparenofiria : Time of the stream is to be determined, but it will likely be in the evening/night for me (Sometime between 4 PM and 8 PM EST).

Due to the issue mentioned, I'd recommend those who already downloaded my v1.01 script to download the updated v1.02 one, although all those with some basic Danmakufu knowledge could dig into the plural script and get rid of the issue.

I got my Entry Done! It's my first serious script and it's horribly rushed, but I hope you'll enjoy it! :] I put the focused more on Patterns than on Visuals so it'll look subpar.
Koishi is acting up again: https://www.dropbox.com/s/d428fiwuqng5j44/KoishiKomeji.zip?dl=0
Featuring Satori! Custom made by me. (It is recommended to play with the Satori player bundled in the script).

Dropped in pretty much just in time to see my entry being played, through sheer luck:

Thoughts/Responses:

-The "Fluffytail" applies to Chen, although I guess her tails are kind of sad next to Ran's.
-Noted about the backgrounds. They were conceived after the rest of the script was and I didn't notice how hard to see it made Chen's primarily red bullets.
-I'm using the ZUN Extended Shotsheet, which I thought was the most common one. I guess there's a more recent one that I just didn't turn up in my Bulletforge trawling?
-The second non-spell reminded me a lot more of Royal Flare and the tight dodges there are the big reason why Reimu was the recommended player.
-The green spell's pattern is indeed random x-slash->random x-slash->x-slash the player's location.
-Yeah, the purple spell probably transitions into the "circle around the boss" stage a bit too quickly. It should probably start at the 12:00 position, both for thematic reasons and to give the player more time to figure out what's going on.
-As for the health, I designed it with regard to the time it'd take if you stayed under the boss for the whole time. With several of the spells, its possible for them to take a fair bit longer if you get penned in a corner. The purple spell in particular could probably use less health though.
-Personally, I found the stages of the survival spell to be in ascending order of difficulty. I dodged the first stage by staying near the bottom and dodging the doll crosses horizontally while working through the rest of the bullets. I was very surprised to see you dodging along with the crosses and going to the top of the screen. Whereas with the third stage, I kept running into the bullet bombs the stalker dolls leave while running away from the lasers.
-I don't THINK that the final spell ever gives you a TRULY undodgeable barrage, if you're being proactive about misdirecting the lasers and make full use of the periodic widening of the bullet walls. As is, I could probably stand to mess with how it fires the big light bullets and make the bullet wall oscillate more slowly.
-Yeah, the last spell was more or less inspired by CTC-Reimu's. Except with dolls instead of dream-ghosts and Extra bosses instead of Final bosses.

I have the whole stream recorded with Chat to whoever needs it! But it's 21.6 GB, So beware!
It's also a torrent file so you'll need a Torrent Client. There is also a lot of unnecessary parts in the beginning so you can trim those down. The Torrent file is just 50 MB though.

Oh wow, this was a quality stream. 10.12/10, would watch again.

Thoughts/Responses:

-Geez, that Chen background was really a mistake. I'll have to see if I can tone it down, for the post-contest update.
-Chen dive-bombing you apparently makes Fall of Icarus really hard to capture blind, especially with how distracting the background is. Could use some warning lasers or something.
-My reasoning for Chen being the midboss was more or less that she's been corralled into the role of the Cheshire Cat through shenanigans[chenanigans?]
-The general red theme stems mostly from Alice in Wonderland's Red Queen and her court, although I would say that Remilia is the most like the Red Queen of the Touhou cast. hMMM, there's an idea...
-To whichever commenter wanted to know how I did the Royal Flareesque non-spell:
    Step 1: Create four dolls
Step 2: Have the dolls rotate in the opposite direction of the doll that spawns next to them
Step 3: Spawn bullets every so often at the doll's position[I THINK the final version was every 5 frames?]
Step 4: Tie the radius of the doll circle to an oscillating function so the dolls go out and then back in again
Its one of those things that came from me fiddling with really basic things that ended up looking really neat.
-If Marisa can do a Master Spark, so can Alice, clearly. Its not that hard, just make a really big laser.
-The knives just spawn without the need for a familiar. Judging by how people have been reacting, I should probably at least put a little familiar circle around them so you don't get blindsided the first time through.
-The clock is made of lasers. In the part where you go around the boss, its supposed to be like the clock ticking.
-While the survival spell is kinda inspired by Len'en, you named the wrong bosses. I was drawing more on Sese for the first phase and Tenkai for the second.
-Jeez, apparently there are more Devil's Recitation's out there then I thought there were.
-Its pretty nice that you took the time to beat the Last Spell individually, after you died to mokoudollsploding the first time.

Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6GpElovcd4
The most notable issue I've seen so far of my script is the lacking balance of the boss' HP, among some others, in multiple patterns:

-> 2nd Otherworld spell: with Python's Okina player in mind, I think I've set the DPS a tad too low, and even though Hecatia does follow the player, it would take players with lower damage output way too long to clear this spell.
-> 2nd Moon spell: same issue as above, since circling around Hecatia rips players without aimed shots the chance to damage her properly.
-> 2nd Earth spell: missing spell name .__.
-> Final spell: too high DPS, each phase could barely fully unfold itself and the next one is already about to start.

Granted, that's my second completed script ever, but still. Though it's really nice that I could examine the balance and execution of my script more precisely when watching someone else, especially somebody very skilled like Creepy, play it.

With that said, I'm also eagerly looking forward to what the next RaNGE or LoCAA contest will offer. Scripting for this contest has been really fun.

From what I've seen, I guess the biggest issue in my script was lack of warning for unconventional stuff... I guess I should take that in consideration for my next script more :V At least I can see I've improved from my last script from RaNGE 17.

Looking over some more streams:

-One thing everyone is unanimous about is that my backgrounds are terrible, especially the bright red Chen background. I was kind of expecting that, because I suck at graphics, but I didn't expect them to be as distracting as they were.
-Apparently I really needed to include my recommended player in the stage description[Or just make my own player and hardcode it in] because only two people have actually used the one I asked for. Ultima's Reimu and even the default Rumia actually seemed to do just as well, but the Artifact Marisa one somehow glitched out my score tracking mechanism.
-No one really likes the pseudo-Devil's Recitation and almost everyone misses out on most of the Last Spell. I probably should have just removed Demon Lord's Heir and made the Last Spell a proper spellcard.

Welp. If that isn't a sign of quality script balancing then I don't know what it is. /s

To be honest, the only truly unbalanced part was Spear the Eitgeist? There's one phase of that spell that I swear is just too fast to dodge and it almost always instakills you if you're playing blind. Leavateein isn't nearly as bad, although seeing it transition to screen-filling laser for the first time is another nigh-guaranteed death and requires counting slashes for the times after that. The rest of the script is pretty hard, but doable with enough practice, more or less on par with FDF Flandre level. Calvary Road in particular is really freaking cool[If still hard].

That said, the bomb on Blaimu works pretty weirdly. It clears basically no bullets and has very short invulnerability time. Notably, the last part means that the screen is still shaking by the time you become hittable again, which is lethal compared with its lack of bullet clearing. All its really good for is powering through Spear the Eitgeist or the screen-filling portion of Levaitieen, since it still hurt Flandre for some reason.

For people who have played my entry
I want to clear few misunderstandings about my entry
1. The player is originally from Junky, and it is already released at Bulletforge before I even begin making my entry. Thus, it's not a custom-player for my entry, it's all-you-can-get player.

2. The speed of the player in early testing was not edited, yes, it's the fast speed for all testing. However, due to the addition of "impossible" difficulty in later updates (Absurd), I try to make a last-minute edit for the speed. Whereas you can see, you start with edited speed, but if you death-bomb or something like that (I still don't know the cause), the speed is changed to the original version (the fast one). If you ask me, don't blame Junky who made the Player, just blame me who can't make proper edits to the player. (Also, I noticed that player is rendered over bullets during testing, I try to change it, but nothing works for it).

3. Yes, the add-rendering is excessive as always. I tried to test the 3 playable difficulties (Normal, Hard, Unreal), the fps stay around 55-60 when I test it. It is understandable tho for fps in higher difficulties, as more bullets are spawned, wherein Normal you should be able to run around 50-60 fps unless you have a serious technical difficulty. Although there are several complaints from the tester about fps in final spell, I try to minimise it as possible while still giving the appropriate difficulty, and that's the best I can do while still using add rendering.

4. As you might have noticed, AJS is mentioned before you play it. If you are wondering what I meant, try to look around at the scripts that AJS have made. Yes, all spells are based on them. I say this early just to avoid confusion about special credits to AJS. As I know that this will give me some deductions for the points.

+. At first, I make this script just for fun purpose, trying to combining AJS scripts into a whole new "Recollection", I already understand at this point that points might get deducted due to the unoriginality. Hence, I have decided that I will keep working it, despite the risks. It was fun though, combining multiple ideas into one new attack.

And, yes, I just noticed several unbalance of difficulties in the script from those Let's play videos.
Even though I would love to update the script, the judging is still in progress. Hence, I cannot make any changes for that, as it will cause confusion.
Yes, I know some people already made Let's Play video out of it, I just try to fix the major issues so anyone else who would like to play it can enjoy it.
Although this is unnecessary, an additional bonus content might be added to that update that can be played separately, it's the idea that I couldn't put it in the entry before the time.

That's all I can say,
thank your for playing and making Let's play video of my entry,
and I'm really sorry for these issues.

The reason I'm writing this?
I did not expect that the popularity of this contest is really high, there's like 6 times I watch someone play my entry and others (Pikno, Sparen, Python, Porygon, Ninja, Zorua).
In order to avoid the misunderstanding, I would to make a proper explanation and apology.
Also, no, I don't mind if the judges don't read this and just score whichever number they come up with based on their own experiences.

Can't wait for the results. Though I already know that I'm placing dead last. But I still want to know how others fared too!

Hi everyone. I know Tricky said we'd be done by the end of the weekend but my last weekend was quite a bit more busy than I had anticipated. Rest assured that I am making progress and just want to play all of the entries one more time before I submit my final judgement. I expect that we will have the results out within the week.

Thank you for your patience!

Dammit. I was so excited about the results and I thought this was it. It's okay Ozzy though.

We're extremely sorry for the delay but here are the results! This was a SUPER close contest. We decided that the score difference between Jimmy and Conarnar was too small to count, so they received a tie. We even spent the better part of last night trying to figure out if the difference between 1st and 2nd place was large enough (we decided that it was).

#1) Junky - Burning Phoenix
#2) Jimmy - Three Dimensions
#2) Conarnar - Extraordinary Subconscious
#3) DryTheMeowstic - Youkai Road
#4) Vigor/Necroheart - Recollection Violet
#5) Umbra - Overly Spicy Chicken Nugget
#6) WishMakers - Return to the Demon World
#7) iVAwalys - Flandre is Bored
#8) Genocraft - Disastrous Dream Duet
#9) Arcvasti - Fluffytail Wonderland
#10) Lollipop - Diabolic Wave
#11) Rawsome - Koishi

Congratulations to the winners!!!

I totally didn't steal this post format from Tres.

Worry not, you have taken the time you needed for making a fair judgment, and that's what truly matters  ;)

Anyways... well, I didn't actually expect to be placed that high from the get-go...

Sincere congratulations to Junky for winning this contest, and everyone else who has participated! It has been really fun this time.

Wonder what will come next?

Super congrats to the winners!  You all earned it.
Working on this project was super fun, and watching everyone including myself improve was even more so!
Can't wait until the next one!  :)

EDIT: Recognized my weak spot, pattern creativity.  Can fix!  I'm glad people had fun with my entry!  :3

Well, at least I'm not the worst. :V

I loved participating in this contest. Really got me back into Danmakufu. (although after I finished my entry I feel completely burnt out again...)
Congratulations to the winners, of course!

Well, that basically went as expected. The moral of this story is that I need to get good at graphic design. Interestingly, my script was the only one rated higher by Trickysticks then by Exporygon. I guess that just means they have different tolerance levels for terrible spellcard backgrounds.

I want to say that I actually thought your script had really cool ideas or maybe it's just cause Flandre is my favorite character. I actually thought the L?vateinn spell was particularly inventive. It's a great spin on the original, which I have gotten very tired of, and I rarely see other scripts take a crack at L?vateinn. Sadly, those spells are really hard to execute well. That and a lot of the rest of the script were rather unfair for a first time player, and that spear spell is just way too fast.

I guess the moral of the story is to keep at it, since you're definitely good at coming up with good ideas. That goes for a lot of people participating in this contest, actually. Also get more playtesters, if you can. I'll be looking forward to everyone's participation in the next contest.

Talking about the next contest, can you give an estimate for when it will be?

Give it a few months. It's unlikely there will be another contest this year, though if there is one it will be around New Years. More likely the next contest will be in February/March

We try to not do them too often to avoid contest fatigue. I wouldn't want to run another one until at least next February, personally.

I feel like it'd be a lot easier to challenge someone who's also itching for a reason to script something in particular, to something like a scripting duel of sorts. Just get a couple of judges, agree on a theme to script for, script length and restrictions, and you'd be set I think.

Just don't go overboard with those in case another contest rolls around.
