only PREMIER anime convention is this week. In fact, it starts in a bit less than two hours, if you pre-registered (which I did not, lol, though there's a five-dollars-off coupon in the Onion for a weekend pass at the door, making it $45 for a weekend pass), and three hours, if you did not.
And yes, it's true. I have gone off the deep end and cosplayed. (http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/8657/ayayayayaya.jpg) You will see me running around with my tengu camera this Friday afternoon, as well as Saturday.
I don't expect much of a response, but still: Is anyone else coming today? Like, at all? K4U, I want to hear your excuse. It better be good. >:<

What I expected: Gaggles of Narutards, hordes of Shinigami, etc.
What I got: The above, and I have spent the past hour and a half playing Shoot the Bullet in the DDR room with a bunch of other Touhou fans, and apparently there is a Sakuya and a Cirno running around here. And someone put Touhouvania Sakuya and Remi on the background on this computer.
And more people are coming tomorrow! Oh god yes this is actually really fun :* Solrack and co., you better start posting here now that I've seen you!

Mostly of Sailor Moon cosplayers, sad to say (and oh god they were selling the SM Infinity Artbook for $1000, as well as cels of Sakura Taisen, Sailor Moon, and Rurouni Kenshin. It's like they were trying to kill me). But the Cirno is apparently busy getting dressed and putting her wings on, so I think I'm gonna chill and play Fairy Wars for the first time before I leave. :3

Awesome! For us, I think we have to wait for Anime Expo 2011... I didn't go this year, but AX isn't big on Touhou. Last time I went was in 2009, but I don't think they had much Touhou, if any, during the time...

There is one Sakura cel I was looking at, but more important, they have Sakura Taisen dolls there. Sakura in her normal outfit, Sakura in Teito Hanagumi uniform, and Sumire in Teito Hanagumi uniform version 2. Needless to say, :* :* :* But I can't have them all so I have to choose one :(
Speaking of choosing one, I think I'm going to spring for the red thighhighs tomorrow. Just because.
Anyway, photos of the first day will be coming up shortly, now that I am home and relaxing~ K4U, damnit, where are youuuuuuuuu :< Seriously, at this point, I'm not gonna accept anything short of "my house near Boulder caught on fire" as an excuse.

Oh man, I love that Punisher. Not only do I love the way it came out, but the design is spot on to boot. I think he used a bit of sponge for the edges, which works pretty well but is also excellent for con protection. He can bang it around and prop himself up on it without worrying about damaging the Punisher itself.
Now just wear a red vest, cape, and dress, and call it a day. :*

Second day, and it's busy as hell! I was found in the artists' section by this adorable young Sakuya with a tea set, and I had her mother take a photo of me and her. She told me of a Cirno (the Cirno from yesterday, but right now she's in the DDR tournament), a Yukari, a Brokou, and another Aya running around also snapping photos like mad. I found the Brokou, and he told me that there's a Reimu around as well. I am going to try my best and find them all~
Oh and apparently there are Touhou doujins in the vendor's section. I wanna see if I can get one. :3

I wouldn't be surprised if Hen Da Ne! had a booth at NDK, it's a large enough con in a large enough city to warrant their looking into it.

There's some here by Toshihira Arata (Inaba of the Moon/Earth artist), and I am pondering picking them up before I leave. :3

There were five minutes left 'til the Dealers' Room closed. I ran in like THE FASTEST IN GENSOKYO and I managed to pick up Love=Graze by Toshihira Arata. Gonna head home soon, since I'm done ruining people's runs in PoFV (as Aya, of course).

We do a good job of scanning doujins in this community, actually! Half the illustration books in the Touhou bin were pictures I'd already seen on Danbooru, and same went for the doujins.
Also, @ Kilga: I mentioned Hen Da Ne to the Touhou doujin dealer fellow, and he told me that they're actually banned from NDK, and cited yaoi fanboy antics and overt h-doujin advertising as the reasons.
Gosh there are so many stories I want to tell from here :D

IIRC, Hen Da Ne! is banned from a couple different cons, all for the same reason. If they separated out the yelling guy they'd probably be okay, but I think he's an owner/manager/etc., something.

I'm sorry for the delay in photos. In exchange for not working yesterday, I have to work today. And resizing all these photos takes a while; I walked away from the con with a raw 500-ish photos of the second day, and pared it down to a little less than 200 after cutting out all the duplicates. Those pictures are 5mb or so, with something like 3000x4000 pixels, and I resize them all to 640x(whatever) to post them here (with some exceptions that you will see later).
I am terribly sorry. I will make it up later tonight, I hope. orz
edit: While I'm at it, I need to ask: how do I scanned doujins ??? (Should probably ask Nietz or Ruka.)

NDK DAY TWO: THE REVENGE OF MAKA ALBARN
So it was Saturday, the big day. I got on my Aya gear, hopped on the city bus and Ayasmirked at all the weirded-out bystanders, went to the convention, and got to work taking photos right off.

Her mother showed me a photo of Sakuya and Cirno (the Cirno from the day before, this time in costume), and told me about this adorable 5-year-old cosplayer dressed as Tewi that I just had to see, as well as another Sakuya and an Aya running around taking photos at the speed of light. They mentioned that once you saw her, you wouldn't stop seeing her, and I made it a personal goal to take a photo of her before she took one of me.

That Anise cosplayer is actually one of my friends, and I was quite surprised at how well their cosplay turned out.
The other Aya was a long time friend of mine, as well as one of my (best friend/old roommate)'s girlfriend. SHe also dressed as a traditional mythological Tengu Friday and Sunday.
And that Totoro Cosplayer is my friend's little sister actually. My friend was the one leading her around most of the convention.

On a less (or more, technically) superficial note, this photo is a great example of one of my photography techniques. Have you noticed how my photos tend to draw on the ambient light of the area without using flash? This is because I hate flash with a passion, and adamantly refuse to use it ever, instead adjusting my exposure time and staying still as long as I need to to get a good photo.

This is why. As I took a photo of her, someone else also took a photo, and my camera caught their flash. See how much it washes out the colour of her clothing, and bleaches her hair? I really despise the effect of direct flash on a subject, so I make it a challenge for myself to avoid it entirely.

And now for the moment I was waiting for all day: another Touhou cosplay to give me full leave to do what I wanted to do with my photos.
When I first got into this community around two years ago, I noticed the incredibly shoddy quality of cosplay photos in the west. Not the cosplays themselves; those were very good. But the photographers didn't do them justice; they used flash or no lighting at all, and the photos were not very good at all. By comparison, the really good photos we get from the east of Japanese cosplayers are photoshopped, yes, and insanely good to start with-- great poses, specifically-picked-out venues to take photos in, and quality cosplays. But the Western Touhou community HAS the quality cosplays to match-- we just need good photographers to work with.
I made it my goal, then, to take good photos of a Touhou cosplayer. And this was my golden chance. I think that desire shows in the following photos.

I had heard that she was lightning fast with her camera, zooming in to take a photo and then zooming away, and the idea of turnabout appealed to me greatly.
So silently I advanced on her from behind, making no sound, my red sneakers creeping along. I adjusted my camera for the light, focused on the target, and held out the bait--
"HEY, AYA!"
She turned.

To the first: Certainly. All I ask is that you give me credit for them, and maybe a link to where you post them so I can watch the reactions. :3
To the second: cosplay Hatate As in any form of art: practice, practice, practice, even if you do have a lowly cell phone. I have seen some really good photos with those, much to my surprise, but that's because the photographers in question worked their asses off to get good with their cameraphones. Nothing really beats a regular (digital, these days) camera in terms of adjustability, but lots of practice with dynamic poses and different areas with different lighting will help you no matter what kind of camera you're using.
Oh, and depending on the kind of photography you want to do (nature, sports, cosplay, etc), check out other photographers' work, and see what works for them, then try it out. Models to emulate (and eventually outstrip) are quite valuable.

Quite a bit! But I was actively seeking out character cosplays over theme dressing, so I didn't take too many photos of them unless they stood out.
