Title: The Grimoire of Marisa
Post by: Arcengal on August 07, 2009, 09:05:08 PM
So, it's apparently out, and I'm probably going to get it even though I can't read Japanese.

Anyone else got it and, if so, what were their opinions?

Edit: Lucarius has a translation project going here. (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=1551.0)

It's pretty cool. It's Marisa commenting on a bunch of notable spellcards she's seen throughout the series. I guess it also gives every character a symbol, which is nice.

Also the music tracks are good.

I take it you haven't heard of ZUN's new book he just released recently, which focuses on Marisa's perspective on charater's spellcards. (And rates them)

I wonder what symbol she gave for the Komeiji sisters (I probably saw it, but was totally oblivious that it came from the grimoire).

Looking at Touhou Wiki, it'll take a long while... Thankfully, I have quite the patience.

EDIT: What the hell. There were too many images on Photoshop and it crashed on me.

Hey! That's pretty nice of you to post it. ^^
And thanks for the list too.

I see ZUN couldn't decide wether Yuka is a lotus or a sunflower since there's no symbol for her.

kk awesome

Also, the book is a list of what Spell Cards Marisa finds interesting. I don't think there's really any other factors to it. Maybe the ones ZUN likes the best? Either way, Yuka doesn't really have any Spell Cards. People like Rumia and Mystia were only mentioned once, so it's not really whether he could get a symbol for them.
Title: Re: The Grimoire of Marisa

I guess this means Marisa is Jewish,
Chen drew her own symbol,
Mystia likes cock,
and Suwako has the best symbol out of everyone?
Title: Re: The Grimoire of Marisa
Post by: Drake on August 08, 2009, 07:22:09 AM
Actually the Chen symbol is a fairy tale reference or a constellation or something like that IIRC. I've seen something similar before.

God, Yuka is always getting gypped. First she is one of the few characters to not be in StB, then she's not in the SWR expansion, now she's not in here? If it weren't for the fact that people acknowledge her existence, you'd think she was still in PC-98.

There is no Mima either  :V (hohoho)

The Sanae symbol indeed sparked my curiousity. Aside from that, these would make awesome spellcircles in danmakufu aswell.

I am sure some symbols being left out has a meaning as it is Marisa we are talking about here. (Translation will reveal I guess)

Yes, because we all expecting Mima to be in a book about spell cards, Mima is very well known for her vast collection of spell cards.

This should be sticky.

And Marisa disappoints me. I was expecting an All-Seeing Eye for Satori.

Spoilers!!!!!! Mima is Marisa from the future
Her magic grew so powerful she learned how to travel through time + becomes youkai
Great disaster hits Gensokyo, brought about by selfish humans
Marisa travels back to train Marisa in hopes of making her stronger than herself
(This is why her age is unknown and hates humans)
(Also many of Marisa's spellcards are technically her own)
(Also PC98 says Marisa changes her hair color, why not to green)
Marisa antagonizes Reimu to train her and tries to take the Yin Yang orbs because they are the secret to victory
When Marisa can't theoretically live any longer training herself she tells PC98 Alice her secret
Alice seals her soul and gives it to Yuka to look after
Yuka gets red eyes etc
TH13 Marisa takes control of Yuka to test if Gensokyo is ready for the disaster
!!!!!!

Why a Catherine Wheel for Hina?

You know her spellcard "Broken Charm of Protection" or whatnot, her first endboss card? That's the pattern it makes before it breaks up.

If you hadn't noticed I linked it into the Mima=Yuka thing I did months ago.

The first part of it also sounds familiar to a plot I thought of at work a few months ago and considered writing eventually. Hm, maybe I'll get around to it one day.

jesus christ

Once the time loop is broken and the disaster averted Marisa stays as a Mima who doesn't hate humans and such
She continues to live on upholding the Hakurei barrier as a side-effect of the Yin-Yang orbs
Reimu dies and even though her children continue the Hakurei lineage, Marisa is given the task of keeping the Hakurei Barrier alive by Yukari, who slowly dies over the course of a long time
Once Yukari is dead, Marisa uses hax powers to manipulate Gensokyo into creating anew
Marisa dons purple and is now Yukari

stop it guys this is scaring me

The best part about ZUN's books are the prologue and epilogue (if those are the right words). Same with this one.

Interesting thing is, half the people who read that book really can't read the kanji in it. No one knows to read 役小角 as えんのおづぬ. That particular example has furiganas in the passage, but most others don't. Pretty severe Japanese.

I like Koishi's spellcards, because they have to do with mental philosophy.
For looks, I'd say Eirin's Tenmou Chimou Hochou no Hou(天網蜘網捕蝶の法).
お遊びで見せて貰ったスペルカード。
完全に自由を奪う。何処にいても自由が奪われてしまうとは恐ろしい。
実際は動けないだけで難しくはないが、これでお遊びだというから精神的に負けた気分になる。
あれぐらいマスタースパークが沢山出せればいいんだけどな。
Translation:
A spellcard she showed me for leisure.
It completely steals your freedom. To lose movement no matter where you are is quite frightening.
In actuality, it's just that you can't move, so it's not that hard. However, she says this is just for leisure, so it makes you feel like you lost.
If only I could shoot that many Master Sparks.

There are other willing people who will get this thing translated one day. I don't have to do it, do I? Besides, I'm not perfect at either language. Like I said before, I can't read half the names on this thing. (Though I researched the origins for all of these names, because I was bored.)

If everyone assumes that someone else will do it, nothing gets accomplished. I'm not saying you have to translate this, but it might be a good idea to at least contribute to a translation effort. For example, that research you did could be useful.

I usually regret contributing because I screw up. Sorry.

If there isn't a thread for a translation of this thing, I can make a thread that translates this little by little. Members can ask for certain characters and I could translate on a first-come first-serve basis, or I can just translate this in order whenever I want to.

If someone's already started a translation, whether it be here or a wiki, I won't bother.

Only problem with my doing this is that I'm not going to finish it. lol

Considering that neither of the previous books have been fully translated yet, along with other stuff, Lucarius, I doubt anyone's likely to complain about you getting a head start -- or any help you can give. (Even if your translation is imperfect, others will have an easier time fixing that up than doing their own from scratch, after all.) Don't feel too pressured, of course. ;D

They haven't? I can read the books in English. There's your translation lol. On second thought, I guess writing it out is much more tedious than to just read it, but it can't take that long, can it? I guess no one likes to finish what they start lol. I usually get bored of the process in the first week or so.
