Title: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2012 enters its final stretch!
Post by: Alfred F. Jones on October 09, 2012, 05:26:43 AM

Last year's thread (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,10980.0.html)

I have decided that Akyu should be the patron of the NaNoWriMo threads.

Currently, 23 days left 'till the start of November. (Again, as last year and the year before that, if you want to post your story in PSL, just put [NaNoWriMo] in the subject for ease of organizing.) That seems like a lot, but it's a short amount of time for brainstorming and figuring out what ideas to write, and to write outlines and plot notes.

50k words in 30 days? Sign me up for a slice of that suffering pie. And I don't even have an idea yet!
Who else is in for another go-around this year?

Going to go for the 3rd win in a row.

On top of my thesis.

I think I've got this, yeah. I think so.

Here me (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/trancehime)

This year I plan to do something a little less (more?) serious, unfortunately as much as I wanted to stray away from fantasy/sci-fi influenced elements, SAO has decided to punt my head and give me some additional ideas to try and integrate into this year's novel.

I tried last year but then my computer died a sad death. I still have the little I did write though since we save the hard drive.

I figure I'll try again this year, and I already kind of have an idea. A 20 page paper for a class needs to be done for late November too though so.../sigh/

With my nightmare of a job about to end, I'm suddenly gonna need something to do when not trudging through the snow looking for new employment opportunities. So, after skipping last year, I will be returning to the front lines. I even have  a good idea of what I want to write. No, it won't be a sick and twisted gore-fest this time.

Oh, crap.  I have an idea.  An idea that is shaping up to be suspiciously similar to a Dresden book.  (Detective noir with a side of magic.)

This is not necessarily a bad thing.  (Though I once again curse my lack of originality :( )

Had an idea.  Then realised a few days ago that it was really stupid and discarded it.  So now I have no idea.

...I am still going to do this, though.  This year will be the one, I just know it!

On the note of NaNo-stories in PSL, for those that haven't seen it before: It's common practice to include [NaNo]/[NaNoWriMo]/[NNWM] or something like that with your story title when making a thread in PSL. It makes things a bit more convenient for the readers and easier for us Librarians when updating the Fanworks-Listing.  :)

That said, good luck to all of you participating this year, may the words be with you.  :3

1243 words. Not bad for only a half-hour's worth of writing. At least now I have the setting down so I should be able to write more tomorrow.

For some reason, I get the feeling I'm going to get one-upped. I was busy the whole day, so I only managed about 4887 words in 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Wow guys you make me wonder why I even try. I still don't even have what should be a day's worth of words.

This is probably not going to happen.

I might just do the thing where I skip to when my story gets interesting and fill in the middle later, because I really have no clue how to get to what I want to write.

Okay, so I didn't manage to get anything written on Day 2; and therefore, was sort of stuck for a bit...

Even though I'm not up to date on the average word count, I certainly feel very pleased with myself after going from 2,700 yesterday, to 5,100 today.
Had I been writing in the morning, I may have got more down. But I'm pretty happy with this.

So.  I have had an epiphany.

...November is a horrible month for this to be held! >.< Added to that the fact that my initial writer's block lead to sickness and, well... Part of me's wondering if I shouldn't just put this on hold, try again during a more convenient month and just upload whatever I do for that month for next year's NaNoWriMo.  Hurm...

Not given up completely just yet, just... It's something I'm considering right now.

...November is a horrible month for this to be held!
Yeah.  The only month that is as bad would be December.  And even then it's arguable.

On that note, I'd just like to offer my encouragement to all the people running NaNo.  I know I could never pull it off, but I wish you all luck.  And if the word counter starts distracting you from the ideas in your mind, hit it with a crowbar and keep running.  There's a lot of stories I hope don't die just because they'll finish in January instead of by the 30th.  And who knows.  Writing comes in bursts.

Quote from: John Steinbeck
Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the 400 pages and write just one page for each day, it helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.

I'm going to be completely honest with myself and admit that I won't be able to make 50k. I just don't have as much leisure time to write as I did the past two Novembers. I'm still going to stick with the story, but the wild race to 50k is already over for me.

Post by: AnonymousPondScum on November 20, 2012, 05:49:18 AM
Likewise. I had an idea for what I wanted to do, but as it turns out it was only that---an idea. Not nearly enough of a full fit for 50,000 words. Not without severe time spent diligently taking a scalpel and glue gun to things, anyway.

That much said, all hail the victorious dead.

This idea could safely carry me past 50k words in a single month, that I don't doubt. But I just don't have the time anymore. It's a major blow to my pride to have to own up to reality, but, well, that's where matters stand.

Post by: Bias Bus on November 20, 2012, 05:04:01 PM
Yeah, I knew from the get go that doing this was NOT gonna work out, mostly with how little I got done starting out. Real-talk; the idea itself could have carried me well into the 50k mark since the story itself was rather expansive but, we all know how good I am with keeping up with expansive stories! It's kinda shitty know that I wasn't able to get as far as I did that other year (I think I struck like 20 or 30k that year) but, at least I'm still gonna keep writing this like I did my other idea. It'd a waste to simply let it drop off the face of the planet just because I didn't finish a NaNo (again).

i've only got 20k words left, but with one week remaining, even that looks far-off... I really have to blame my thesis and my metric ton of other work, but those take priority, naturally.

i'm really disappointed. i hope i can make it...

It's doable, you just have to have the time. And if you don't, then you should be realistic and accept that. I mean, it's possible to break out in a writing frenzy and throw out 20k words a day, but is it likely? Either way, do what works for you and your schedule best.

All of this.

I mean, I could keep going right now but, with the pace I have and the speed I go, there's just no way I can get anywhere near 20k words a day, even if it's a miracle of some sort. But, like I said, the best I can give is continuing to write it even though NaNo's over. At least then I have the pace I'm most comfortable with and can fix things.

So yeah.

Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2012 enters its final stretch!
Post by: Athrel on December 02, 2012, 04:25:02 AM
I managed to make it but I have some disappointments about what I wrote while looking back on it. For one thing, while I did manage to get to the 50k goal in time I didn't finish my novel. This was partially due to the fact that I usually stopped when I reached a little over the daily word count goal for each day and I do intend to finish it but I will probably work at a much slower rate without the time limit. In addition to that when I was looking over some parts of my novel I found that a lot of it, while not necessarily written poorly was a little boring to read, but I can't find many parts that I would like to cut out. I think that over all either the premise for my novel wasn't very good or that I'll have to do some heavy editing to make it more interesting. Either way, I'm at least happy that I was able to finish the word count goal.
