Title: Touhou Fans IRL
Post by: チソウ タイゼン on March 29, 2012, 10:46:02 PM
It's quite a rare occurrence, yes, but it does happen, doesn't it?

During a discussion about renaming one of my friends, at an asian buffet:
Quote from: me and friends
>What's the name of that one... devil character? Scarlet something...

> Remilia. Her sister Flandre.

> Oh, right, Flandre. Her.

> Flandre.... I dunno, I don't think it suits me.

> Granted the rest of the final and extra bosses in Touhou sound quite Japanese.

Quote from: girl at different table
TOUHOUUU!

This has to be the first time in reality that I've encountered a fan of the series in real life :V
So what about you?

Conventions shouldn't count, but I guess I don't see why not?

I had a student once who was a bit of a Touhou fan because his brother was a fan as well and had attended the 2010 AnimeBoston Touhou panel. That was kind of neat, if a little weird because I know what his brother had seen me in.

I've only met Touhou fans IRL at Otakon 2009. It was nice. Met Kilga, triangles and MJP, however briefly.

Outside of that, no one here has heard of it, let alone played it. Shame, really, but that'll likely change this summer.

Usually people I know have been introduced to Touhou either directly by me or have sort of seen it elsewhere and have connected the dots through me. One person in my japanese class is a Touhou fan, but I don't usually initiate conversation explicitly about it.

WHAT THE **** MAN YOU'RE INSANE I CAN'T EVEN BEAT HER ON EASY

Only people who know about it not through me all think I'm god-like at the games.
90 FPS SA normal via bombspam probably didn't help that very much though.

In the gaming club at my school there's one other guy who's played IN. Also a girl who knows of the series but I'm not sure how interested she is. She says her favorite character is "Sakura" (meaning Sakuya).

I met people at a con but that's unavoidable.

I actually got into Touhou from the guys at school who are sort of the unofficial Game Club :V

They dropped it because of the whole game-overing to Easy Mode Cirno thing, but look where I am now!

Not that that means much :derp:

I know there are a lot of Touhou fans here in my country, but sadly only a (very) few/none around me.

I've been trying to introduce Touhou to my mates, but their reactions are somewhat around :

Well, it makes me a one-man-army :V
There are also a lot of conventions, some of them featuring Touhou, but my lack of budget always succeed in preventing me to attend any. In short, aside from me and my friend (who introduced me to Touhou back then), surely there is none within my environment and scope.

The only people I have Touhou conversations with are those that I introduced to Touhou.

However! A few friends - they aren't Touhou fans, but they like it sort of from what they know - have a surprising amount of peers who like Touhou.
Example: One friend mentioned Touhou, and some overhearers suddenly jumped into the conversation!
Another example: A friend was at a party when someone said, "I could be playing Touhou right now." That caused a chain reaction of "What?! You play Touhou too?!" Wish I could've been there, with that many Touhou fans!

High School, I was the one who introduced my friends into the series.

In Uni, when I was at Mac, I met a nice group of people who were aware (one that goes to the cons in Japan) so it was nice.

The first time I ever met Touhou fans IRL was at Kilgamayan's Touhou panel at Anime Boston last year.  (by the way, going to AB and the panel again this year :3).  Since then, I've gotten several of my friends into Touhou, so now I've got quite a few IRL Touhou fan friends now.

Met a guy at club who had played EoSD (1cc), SWR, and some of the fan games.  Thinking he was still new as he was a bit excitable and seemed to be talking about fanon.  Also, met some cool cats from here at an expo.

When I went to medical school I talked a bit with this Asian guy called "Tin" who was an almost prodigious genius at the whole ordeal; he rarely studied yet always aced the exams, regardless, he was quite a bit into anime and also liked Touhou.

At that point I was no Touhou fan, but I was a fan of anime, yet I didn't reveal that to him since it was one of my more embarassing hobbies... much to my regret to this day.

Regardless, due to him I now (probably wrongly) associate anyone who plays Touhou with having a superior intellect.  :V

I don't think I ever met anyone here who's a fan of touhou, let alone know what the heck it is. It'd be neat to find someone to share my thoughts with in real life, but I'm aware that I may never find that person any time soon (if at all) :V

First IRL Touhou fan I met was in my Japanese class at uni last year. I did a presentation on it one day as a cultural project, and afterwards we proceeded to talk a bit about the TH13 demo and how to get the grips of Youmu's playstyle. Alas we haven't talked or had contact since then.

Typically I'm the one to introduce Touhou to others. Most aren't really into the cast and gamestyle (a few have called it a Galaga clone), but when I switch over to the Touhou GTA mod, their response is considerably more supportive. :V

...expecting to meet quite a few more fans at AB next week :D

Haven't really met any fans of Touhou here (yet), but I did run into one person who at least knows what it is. We were working on a project for an art history class, and she randomly starts playing the third movement of Beethoven's Pathetique on the piano in the room. Naturally, I parsed this as Remilia's theme at first and said so out loud. Oops. :ohdear:

So that sparked a short conversation, in which she mentioned that some of her friends drew Touhou art sometimes, but she wasn't really into the series herself. Partial victory?
Title: Re: Touhou Fans IRL

The only Touhou fans I met were cosplayers at an anime con so it was only natural.  And some people who noticed that my doll was wearing a Reimu outfit (I got bored and crocheted it for her...then some people noticed her after I was checked out and it was too hot to put her in the car until I left).

I did try to get others into it myself with minimal success.  My ex was not very interested and got irritated when I talked about it at times and my one friend played a bit but didn't really get into it deeply.  Though I do have a penpal who got me into it but that's not face to face conversation/can play the multiplayer games without using the internet.

A friend and I stumbled onto Touhou at the same time ("Who stole the precious what now?  Huh.  Wait, these are games?!"), so I've always kind of known another Touhou fan.

And then at Anime Boston when Kilga started running the Touhou panels, I met people there who I'd then bump into online or at other cons.  Thus began the era of my Touhou network.

..."network" having the definition of the like five people who like my occasional Touhou related postings on Facebook.

Whenever I mention Touhou to peopel at my schoo, some of them go "Touhou? That sounds familiar...". It's probably because ~70% of my school is Asian. :V

People that are new to Touhou usually find it fun once I let them play it for the first time, but none of them are turning into fans anytime soon.

There was a friend of mine back in high school who happened to be a Touhou fan. I didn't know this until he randomly mentioned it to me and we got into a full conversation about it. He even has a picture of Eirin and Patchouli as his avatar on MSN.

And just recently, we got a new member at my college's Anime/Gaming Club. While chatting with him I said  that I've yet to meet someone who knows about Touhou. He did. Cue full conversation.

One time, in a Latin class I took a year ago, a girl who had already established herself as something of an anime and manga nerd or otaku or whatever, walked past my desk while humming U.N Owen Was Her very distinctly.

At this time, I actually hadn't played a Touhou game, I knew very well what it was and how cool the music was and had planned on playing it but just never got around to it.

I turn to her and say in a perplexed voice "U.N Owen Was Her?" and she responds with a shocked look and asks "How the hell do you know that?", flattering... :V

I respond by saying "I knew you'd be a Touhou fan" based purely on her track record.

She then proceeded to quiz me on the series in general, which I got a fair amount right and a fair amount wrong due to not having played any of the games at the time.

Later on in the week I decided to finally get around to playing Touhou, since it had all but slipped my mind until she hummed that song, the girl basically galvanized me into becoming the Touhou fan that I am today.

Touhou fans? Well, there's this Korean kid who plays it, but he's kinda noobish though. My mistress has some knowledge of Touhou when I mention Flandre. There was one more person who played a fangame of one but has no idea it's originally from Touhou. And my relatives (do they count?) plays it, but talks more about fanon stuff.

It's kinda sad to know only few people around me know what Touhou is...

I was singing Emotional Logic (an arrange of Mokou's theme) and these two girls that attend my school (who were sitting next to me during lunch at the time) immediatly reconized it & were excitedly telling me "THAT SONG'S A TOUHOU ARRANGE!"
Turns out they barely found out about Touhou around two weeks ago, they had no clue what to play the games on (one of them asked me if it were for the PS3, really), until I told them all about, and how the games are (they've only seen a few videos of the gameplay, hardly any though). You couldn't believe how many questions they've asked me, they seemed like they really wanted to get into it.
I can't wait to help them out with the games & what not.

The only people I met IRL that knew about Touhou before I even talked to them. All my other friends know about it because I've told them about it.

I envy all the schools you guys attend. At my university, no anime club exists. Everyone watches football and drinks beer like normal Americans.
I am humming various Touhou themes at every time of the day. People shoot confused looks at me, thinking I came from some other planet.
My roommate watches me play Touhou. He has a sadistic urge to see me die, and makes loud noises whenever incoming bullet fields get dense.
I once told a friend about the Touhou Project. I explained how all the characters are young girls. He accused me of being a lolicon.
I often read Touhou doujinshi. When he sees me reading, my roommate encourages me to read more hentai.

My school is ~70% Asian (Chinese, Korean, Indian, etc.), and they just found out what memes were. I really don't think you want to go to a school with people who are basically shouting "Y U NO" or "ME GUSTA!" all the time and thinking they're funny. I get enough of that from the Internet...

Anyway, that's getting off topic. Whenever I play Touhou in the school library or computer room, I get around 5 people asking me "What the hell are you playing?", as many of you have experienced, I'm sure. I've still yet to find another person in real life who is not me or a good friend that can beat Normal :derp:

Somehow, I doubt anyone would believe Tewi's age to be over a million years. She just looks like your typical rabbit-human girl.
Although curious enough, my friend did raise the concern of panty shots for girls flying upright through the air. He concluded I was a total lolicon pervert.

After I discussed the bullet hell aspect of the game, he asked the following question: "What are they, attacking dildos with a homing trajectory underneath your skirt?"
Looking at some of ZUN's danmaku, I can see how he may have a point.

Envy? I think that is slightly incorrect. Most of the time it is kind of dependant on the culture / society / community you live in.

For example, The standard gamer in The Netherlands hardly knows about Touhou. As it was quoted before: "What is this, this looks shit" is the first reaction you'll probably get. Dutch schools do have clubs, but in the form of social clubs and only on universities. Not like a special "gamer club" or "music club" (at least I haven't ran into them yet)  (They are also around the ages of 19~26, so those are your grown ups). I bet Turkey is even more different. I don't know if there are Turkish people living in Turkey people who know touhou. I'll have to google for it.

I'll tell you, in my last 7 years of studying, I've met 0 people IRL who had a high interest in anima/manga, let alone Touhou. You only run into those if you take Japanese classes or partake in those types of communities.

In pure theory, yes.

However, in my experience, the effect is similar to being the only person to possess a gun at the scene of a murder. Even though there is no proven correlation, people are immediately going to suspect you were the killer. Yet, take the same situation, except everyone at the scene of the crime possesses a firearm. Everyone is still a suspect, but since having a gun is the norm rather than the exception, the chance of each person being the killer appears to be lower.

My friend concluded the only reason someone would play a game filled with little girls would be to fulfill lustful desires toward little girls. Since no one else on my campus has even heard of Touhou, he figured the game's obscurity was due to how the premise can appeal to a specific demographic, which he envisioned to be male lolicons.

Even though I am not a lolicon, I can understand why he made the accusation. I am sure some Touhou fans came for the little girls (or became lolicons as they engaged with more Touhou material). After reading more than a few perverted Touhou doujinshi, I have no choice but to say he is right in some instances. On the other hand, most Touhou doujin I have encountered are appropriate for all ages, which gives me faith in the goodness of humanity.

I'll tell you, in my last 7 years of studying, I've met 0 people IRL who had a high interest in anima/manga, let alone Touhou. You only run into those if you take Japanese classes or partake in those types of communities.

In my anecdotal experience, I have met many people throughout middle and high school who would have called themselves anime and manga fans. I did participate in my high school's anime club, but for the most part, I found them by overhearing (eavesdropping) on their conversations. Although I can imagine the situation would be different outside of the United States, where anime and manga may not be as common an interest.

Since I found out about Touhou right before I graduated high school, I could not confirm the existence of any fans there. So far, I have only met six or seven people (out of 300) who told me they watch anime at my university, and none of them said they knew about Touhou. This is probably the case everywhere with most niche interests. The "envy" part of my last post comes from the assumption I am in the same culture as most other posters (American), and thus I am jealous of other American schools with larger anime/manga fanbases. I realize I may be making an unfounded conclusion here, so anyone outside of the US should correct me.

But yeah, I guess Japanese culture naturally diffuses to me, being Asian and all.

In pure theory, yes.

However, in my experience, the effect is similar to being the only person to possess a gun at the scene of a murder.

That's not at all comparable. Games have as much to do with being into little girls as reading a book has to do with insider trading.

All I'm saying is, the next time someone's all, "yr games has little girls wat r u a pedo hurrrr" you should respond with "All your games have big burly dudes in uniform running around. What are you, gay or something?"

If someone wanted to "fulfill his lustful desires" he wouldn't do it by playing a shmup with poorly drawn characters and no sexual content.

There's a lot of H/loli doujins simply because there's so many Touhou doujins in total. The actual ratio of erotica in the Touhou doujinsphere is actually much lower than most other fandoms, I think it's something like 10-20% at most.

Is there an actual statistic about that, or is that a number estimated on your personal experience?  :derp:

Lol.
C27 most likely is talking about an actual static.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but this got researched for a Touhou Panel a few years back.

Looks like the Touhou H-doujin community really needs to step their game up!

No. It should stay how it is. Not saying I hate H-doujin(I actually have multiple stacks of them), just leave it how it is since people will argue that "WTF?! Why chu have lolicon hentai?!" and such, while they watch porno stuff anyways.

Is it just me or do you guys make it seem like being a Lolicon is an issue? Kind of looks like accusations of being gay between people somewhere in their teens. If people desperately want to draw a connection between owner of Lolicon Doujinshi -> RL pedophile, I won't really feel inclined to give a damn, mainly because I hardly care about the opinions of people with prejudices or dumb opinions of people in general. My friends know into what kind of stuff I am, they didn't draw the connection because of Touhou but because I hardly hide that, never had issues. If people give you a hard time because of that, look for better friends.

Regarding the topic, I've never met people in my surroundings who knew Touhou before they saw me playing somewhere. After that, they didn't start liking it either, but I don't really mind since I'd rather keep it as my very own special hobby.

Well, my partner got me into Touhou in the first place, so he obviously plays the games. We  occasionally play PoFV against each other, and seeing how we're moving together this summer, we will probably play even more PoFV than before.

And I also have a couple of friends who play the games, and have varying skill levels. It's rather funny to discuss about gameplay stuff with them, and occasionally we even discuss about the fandom-side of things. But that's rather rare. Or, well, at least we listen to music and arranges a lot, and sometimes comment on it, so I guess you could say that it's fandom stuff.

There is also a rather large Touhou community in Finland, they arrange meetings a couple of times a year, and even have their own forums. However, the community in Finland mainly consists of teenager otaku girls, who are all into cosplay and fanstuff and never play the games. Also, most of them are lesbians, and they all date each other within this really wicked Beauty and the Bold-circle. There also are a couple of other fans to the Finnish community, and I like to talk with them if I go to the meetings. They're mostly adult men like me, and like hentaimanga and anime, and actually play the games, instead of just talking about how interesting personality Minoriko has. All I know is that Minoriko's final card is annoying.+-

I remember that reading about that. Ah, here's it: http://www.japanator.com/touhou-is-way-too-popular-on-the-doujinshi-scene-14537.phtml
On one hand 17% is very low, but that's just because of the ridiculous size. 787 Adult titles during 2009 makes you raise your eyebrows, but 5030 general works is jaw-dropping. All that drawings by hand... Although the majority of doujins are probably not illustrated in detail.
Regarding touhou being an all female cast and whatever, I'd say remember, touhou is a pretty niche anyways. Let's say the H element didn't exist. Touhou would still be some obscure (from a non-Japan standpoint) japanese bullet hell game, that has a ton of derivative music and what not. You can compare it to watching a great anime series and wanting to recommend it to someone. There are still requirements to be satisfied before you can naturally bring it up. Either the person is a good friend of yours, or if a conversation heads in that direction beforehand. In any case, the person generally has to be familiar with japanese anime/manga. Even after you bring it up, its hit or miss. One reason why I don't associate with the local anime club much, is that anime is very broad. Hard to find any discussion about any series which has finished. So the difficulty in finding people into touhou isn't entirely unmatched. A difference between touhou and anime is that it's not even medium people are familiar with. Feels like introducing someone to visual novels. Even past the close-minding "oh snap its from japan, there's a reason why its obscure", someone really doesn't know what at all to expect when they see or are introduced to touhou. At least that's what I've seen with the people I've shown touhou earnestly to. Usually a positive reaction amounts to a "Cool, alright, I'll check that out." consider friends, if they seem open-minded or receptive enough, I usually give it a try.

I and a friend was introduced to touhou by another friend (which I eagerly jumped on), and eventually found the person who had gotten that friend into it. 3 other people in total, with the majoirty of the talking done with one friend. I'm pretty happy to have that. Usually we share links to touhou videos, pictures, stories, or danbooru comics. This feels like the quintessential touhou connection, it's basically like: yes we know there often is long gaps between talking about touhou, but that's OK, links will always be welcome. Although on occasion we do go deeper into character personalities or fleshing out details of Gensokyo so it's more consistent. As for conventions, I've met and talked with two people at cons who distinctly play touhou, one of them was (the only vendor) selling doujins. There's been people here and there who have been aware of touhou. That's why I keep dropping signs, just in case some one does recognize touhou.

Overall, I've only saw one set of two persons who liked touhou before I introduced it to them. I was wearing a Touhou shirt, and they came up to me and hugged me. "Who's your favorite character?" It ended with us telling eachothers favorite playable characters, and that's the last time something like that's ever happened to me before. Well.. there was this one other time in which I went to a brief art class and I had a picture of Remilia that somebody asked if she was from the Touhou Project, but yeah. That was it. It was pretty lucky for me. Otherwise, i've seen no other Touhou fan before irl. So depressing, because I live near Philadelphia and the population for otakus and anime fans is humongous.

I was showing my friends my youtube channel because I can.

Anyway we passed by a Touhou video and on the way out to dinner one of them asked me "Was that Mountain of Faith" and I was like "Yar. You know about them?"

And then yes.

I imagine the experience was much like finding a lost relative after being separated for many years. Or being the last one of your species alive, then meeting someone else who is the same kind as you. Oppressed Touhotakus of the world, unite!

Here, I imagine everyone would give me disappointed glances. I have not seen a single person wearing an anime shirt at my university.

Heh, I'd think they were also thinking of the same thing that "Nobody else appear to like anime, let alone touhou, boohoo".

Here, there are some animaniacs, but that is even an acquired taste. As for fans of Touhou, haven't seen or heard anything.

When I told my friends (The ones that play Touhou) that I beat IN on Lunatic, they stared at me with their jaw hanging low.

Before that, they bragged constantly about beating a game on Easy. There are also a few elitists at my school whom I had shut up by showing them the replay of me beating a game on Lunatic.

It was fun to watch them stare at me.

In Choir, when we didn't have anything on schedule (Free day), I played the opening of Vessel of Stars ~ Casket of Star (Right hand) on the piano and I think five people stared at me approvingly.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I decided to annoy my Algebra I teacher with purposely messing up demonstration problems, using the logic "1 + 2 = 9" as a reference to Cirno I think on Cirno Day and the Touhou fans in the room decided to laugh like crazy while everyone else just gave us weird looks.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One day in Choir that we had nothing to do (This happens a lot because people behave badly and sectionals had to be removed), so I referred the teacher to Marasy's video of Native Faith on Piano, she played it (Projector, not on an actual piano. I mean a video), and I think nearly everyone that was watching had this look on their face. This... Befuddled look. I think one of the students was naming off Suwako's cards in the time of music that they remember seeing them appear.

Happy days :>

Naming spell cards while hearing certain parts of the song come up is pretty much when you are addicted to touhou (for another thread)... Sometimes, I do that to, the mickey mousing effect is very high.

Ran into a friend's friend who was a more serious addict of Touhou than I was. Sadly, other than that one instance, I've never seen Touhou fans outside of conventions...

Would be interesting if I ran into one by chance, though. Imagine yourself listening to your Touhou music with your iPod, loud in a subway or some place, and some passerby hears it and goes "omg is that Touhou music? I'M A BIG FAN!!"

I would love for that to happen.  I tend to go out with my video game/anime/j-pop player (yes, I have a separate MP3 player just for fandom stuff and another for songs I could hear on the radio back home) and hope someone gets curious enough and hears me bopping my head to something Touhou related.
