Title: Similarities
Post by: Easy Mode on June 17, 2009, 08:38:28 AM
Now, this may seem like a YOU KNOW YOU'RE ADDICTED TO TOUHOU BLAH BLAH BLAH thing, but I think this needs its own thread.
Have you ever noticed something strangely familiar to Touhou? As in:
Oh hey, the beginning of the Lost Woods song sounds like Marisa's theme!
The whole Kaguya in Okami business
etc
For example, two days ago, I was on the train to SLC. The conductors little beeping noise sounded like the first three notes to Lunatic Princess. I felt the sudden urge every time to finish the song.

Yeah, I know. But it's still a similarity between the two games.

Hmm really? I should pay attention a bit more.

Or how about an arrange based on the Trooper and Flowering Night? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKcaK8kw2PI&fmt=18)

Remember me?

All too much. *has Kirby Super Star Ultra, hates Marx's giant beam attack*

Let's see if I can draw more comparisons between him and Touhou, for the fun of it . . .

Marx . . .
1st: Has wireframe wings punctuated by glittering sparkles,
2nd: Looks adorable (on the surface),
3rd: Has a giant laser beam technique (Hi, Marisa!)
4th: Has a technique where he drops seeds that quick-fire sprout into towering vines (Hi, Yuka, Kanako!)
5th: Has a technique where he unleashes a rapidfire stream of arrows (Hi, Touhou-in-general!)
6th: Moves WAY too much (Hi, bosses!)
7th: Has an EX-Form (Hi, Keine, Reimu, Marisa, etc., etc.!) . . . that scares the bejeezus out of you with the sharp jump in difficulty and can only be gotten to in the mode you unlock after beating everything else (HI EXTRA STAGE).

I got to Marx Soul only ONCE. I HATE him even more than Marx. But I'm determined to beat him, if only to say that I'd gotten to his Ear-Raep Scream of I'm-Dying by my own power. (Granted, I'm doing it the cheapest way possible, but eh, semantics.)

. . . She turned the forest around her home from Lost Woods to a virtual Tastes-Like-Diabetes Candyland-meets-Bubbly-Clouds? Geez.

Of course, the promise of world domination, on the other hand, sold me on the game (and reminded me a bit of Utsuho, in a way; "Supreme power? Possibly destroyed its previous owner from within? Could easily destroy the world? HECK, LET'S GO GET IT!"). I'll have to look about . . . ufufufu...

EDIT: Just remembered a nice little piece of similarity between Touhou and the Kirby series. Kabula/Kaboola, Now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohoXHpmwR_w#)* and then (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGFKHrYnvrk). Sure, neither of these players actually goes out of their way to avoid the thing, but it's still a shooter boss no matter which way you toss it, and on top of that I can't help but enjoy fighting her**. And then there's also this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-nLX3upQGA). Nova's stage in Milky Way Wishes. Yup, it's a shooter. Not only that, but this guy seems to actually graze the boss a couple times. Of course, it looks different in Super Star Ultra, but it's not that different when it gets down to it.

(* Go to 6:57 -- that's when the actual Kabula fight starts; otherwise, they're Let's-Playing the game and are going through Hard Mode Bubbly Clouds.)

(**Ships are all female, tell any sailor otherwise and he'll either look at you funny, politely correct you, or violently rehabilitate you.)

In Bunny Must Die, the main character can stop time and throw knives.  This may be an homage to Dio, rather than Sakuya, but also the final boss Chelsea, in one of her forms, shoots lots of danmaku at you.

Also, this one is almost certainly coincidental, since BMD came out before DS, but one of the bosses is named Septentrion Pleiades, Utsuho's final spellcard is called Septentrion.

First most obvious thing I noticed was that Septette sounds very similar to the first part of Beethove's Pathetique Sonata movement 3. Heck, it's even in the same key and the first 9 notes are exactly the same, including rhythm.

Some other themes that sound familiar but I can't pinpoint their origin:

Satori Maiden 3rd eye (though I also don't know the similarities of all those listed before)
Gensokyo Millenium History of the Moon (Main part after the Intro)
The Gensokyo the Gods Loved

and some others that I forgot...since now I'm so absorbed into Touhou music, it doens't sound similar to other things, it's that other things sound similar to them.

This one is much much clearer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNC1RuE7r70).

Has anyone else noticed that Satori is suspiciously similar to Prishe from Final Fantasy XI? Consider:

-Both of them are purple haired, mind-reading immortals.
-Prishe is eternally a child, while Satori is short and childish looking even for a Touhou character.
-Prishe is referred to as "the abhorrent one", while Satori was hated so much she was driven underground.
-Prishe cares about animals as much as people, since she can read their minds, while Satori is the same way but takes it even further by surrounding herself with pets.
-Prishe has a chunk of magical black rock stuck in her chest where her heart should be, while Satori has a heart outside of her body on her chest.

Them Purple broom riding witches in star ocean 3 that attack with arcane stars seem to remind me of someone out of pc-98.

I'm actually pretty sure this is deliberate.  If you're at the part in the game where you can fight in the arena, go fight the team "White Lily Battlefield" for a much more blatant reference.  Granted, the translators assed it up, but it's still very recognizable.

Either it was one of those crazy Deja Vu moments, or her theme is based of a song I`ve heard before and yet to find/remember it XD

Other than that...>_>; I can`t think of anything in particular at the moment

Although Hartmann`s youkai girl sounds like the style of Karl Amadeus Hartmann`s songs, which is interesting considering the song title; although we know where the name Hartmann was more likely to come from xD

Then it really does belong in the "You're Addicted to Touhou When..." thread. Yuka is a common name. Same goes with several other names in the Touhou universe. Or Multiverse, considering that Gensokyo isn't the only dimension.

Because, you see, stating that your classmate can be related to Touhou merely by her name is like this:

"I have a friend named Alice! Oh, and when she was a kid, she used to play with dolls! She's Soooo totally related to Alice Margatroid!"

Just noticed that Natsuhi's hair from Umineko has the same color scheme as Byakuren's.

...No it doesn't? Natsuhi's hair goes from brown to red, not purple to brown. They're not even the same shades of brown.

Now what I am about to relate may not have any connection exactly but it's interesting once you think on it:

Wynaut  and Rumia. Yes, Wynaut. The Pokemon. Wobbuffet's pre-evolution.

As all of you (or most of you) know, Rumia's catchphrase is "Sonano ka?" meaning "Is that so?" Wynaut's Japanese name is "Sanano".which roughly means "Really?", basically the same as Rumia's.

Mix it in with Wobbuffet's Japanese name, Sosanso (meaning "That's the way it is") and we have a full fledged conversation.

Rumia: Is that so?
Wobbuffet: That's the way it is.
Wynaut: Really?

Danbooru's down, so... (http://gelbooru.com/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=183957)

Couldn't get translations, but the text says what you think it does. (Still surprised they haven't made one with Wynaut in it yet. Or, well, surprised I haven't seen it.)

To the creators of Magikano: tank-building engineer ≠ time-stopping maid.

Just slowly hummed PCB's Stage 4 theme "The Capital City of Flowers in the Sky" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQAliyNOVUo) while washing dishes today.

I recognized another theme in the stage theme's beginning melody: Persona 3 Velvet Room BGM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOHB5AUygI) o_o (also Persona 4's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSuP-HFDU8I))

They sound so similar, at least in the beginning melody.

From Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Experiment 113 (Shoe). Ability: Can cause bad luck
if his horns are pointed down or good luck if his horns are pointed up
.

His first appearance was years before MoF. Given how popular L&S is in Japan, could this have influenced Hina's design? :/

Hello, there !
This is a video I have do with some similarities I have found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1N-wPYcP58

I am not really sure for all. For Okuu's theme, it was the begining of this arrange (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhKe-Z-NhBs) by Apocalyptica which made me think about, maybe, a same way to arrange this Edvard Grieg's classic...
For Reisen's theme, I know about this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQSDf-V0yDs), but this Bach's piece look like too...and it haven't the guitar sound before begin the melody, so...who have inspired who ? Or, maybe it's just coincidences...   :)

Mmm... I'm wondering if someone mentioned some similarities between this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmlXXPVxQ3Q#t=0m20s) and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Mmgb9KZ1nY#t=0m29s). At least I note some similarities in certain parts of both songs.

Well, there are my two cents by the moment.

See ya!

Isn't it supposed to actually be Yuki and Mai?

I might be overthinking this one, but:

Yuyuko ≈ King of Town much more so than Youmu ≈ Poopsmith, of course.

I apologize if this happens to be gravedigging, but I see no other replacement target, and I just HAVE to say, that,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GXU3t1dZWM Right here at 0:17

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12AHLzW4kks And at 0:39 in Satori's theme

Sound terribly, terribly similar. I thought I was listening to a rendition of Satori's theme in the first actually.

Once again, apologies if this wouldst be gravedigging.

Yep, it'd be digging up this thread's grave. Sorry.

You're welcome to make a new one if you'd like, though.
