Title: Where would you be without Touhou
Post by: Demonbman on February 08, 2010, 11:25:54 PM
I've pondered about this for a while and I figured "why not ask everyone else?" So if there was no such thing as Touhou, what do you think would have happened to you?

If there was no Touhou, I would probably be a straight A student because I wouldn't be up all night trying to capture that one card.

So if there was no such thing as Touhou, what do you think would have happened to you?

I would be spending nights upon nights coding random applications out of sheer boredom.  My i-pod would also be freakin' empty.

My wallet would be a bit healthier though.

I would have a lot less songs to listen to, I would concentrate more on my home work and get finished earlier, but I'd also be bored out of my mind on the internet and unable to think up funny stories.

Probably less immersed into internet/animu culture, and more into Nintendo like I used to be.

My grades would probably be better too >_>"

Surprisingly enough, I don't think I'll be that far off from what I am now.

Its just that I'd be much boarder then I am now (No "interesting" games to play, no eccentric music to listen to, hell not much stuff to watch on internet other than anime.) and I would be off trying to look for interesting anime and games.

I also think I will be a lot worse in drawing and programing then I am already, since Touhou was the reason I put some effort in to those stuff. (I even tried learning C++ since I wanted to make Yugi in MUGEN and practiced to draw sprites.  ...Only to stop a few thousand sprites short. OTL)

But yes this is an interesting question we must ask ourselves once in a while. :)

I probably wouldn't be into shmups. While Touhou wasn't how I rediscovered the genre, it's what kept me staying with it until I felt the need to branch out.

Other than that, it hasn't really changed me. I probably would have found another interest to soak up the time that Touhou/shmups have instead.

I'd be able to relate to more people and not have even other anime fans I know shun my interest  :V

But then without touhou I wouldnt have all this awesome music, and maybe the creative stage im in now and my interest in learning the piano (which I'm planning to meet music society wednesday to get an access card for the practice rooms) might not have happened.

Weird as it is, I feel the cult of Touhou has enriched me.

Short answer: COD MW2 and HD graphics!!!!!! Yeah, I'll probably be playing another round of mainstream games again.

Long answer:

- I'll never have got into shmups in the first place.
- Without knowing the forums, I still will be clueless about one man projects and doujin games.
- Also I will have never discovered other games like Osu! as well.
- There are a few more, but I'll leave it at that.
Title: Re: Where would you be without Touhou
Post by: shadowbringer on February 09, 2010, 03:50:03 AM
- I wouldn't have known IaMP, which was how I accidentally got into the fandom ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UySaJa0-5o8 , if you remember me saying how I was searching for the "Ode to the 2-hit Combo" video )
- I wouldn't have gotten to challenge myself after seeing Dracil's IN Extra replay, and have acquired (at least not through Touhou) taste for shmups, and realization that the genre's not poorly designed, being actually possible to 1cc. Also, Touhou made me want to look for other shmups for comparisons, and that led me to discover the joy of scoring mechanics. (ironically, I'm bad at scoring in most Touhou games)
- very likely I wouldn't have brought myself to participate in the 2009 STG Tournament held in the shmups.org forums, since I wouldn't have developed shmup abilities (abilities? More like some ability, and lots of re-runs), and would be too afraid of hurting my team, with a bad performance. It turned out that the tournament was VERY fun, and I look forward for the next one!
- I wouldn't have gotten to meet one of my favorite characters ever. (see my avatar :p)
- wouldn't have met some nice people and respectable players here, and in the imageboard (I've started using #shrinemaiden last..)
- wouldn't have stopped playing MMORPGs as a hobby (more like social compromise, due to War of Emperiums and item hunting for WoEs, etc..), at least through Touhou
- wouldn't have gotten to play/watch Phantasm Romance (!)
- wouldn't have gotten to know (at least not through Touhou) about doujinsoft, and the amount of fanworks that can come out of events such as Comiket (every, or most aspiring manga artists -- or con-goers -- have heard about fan magazines, but most wouldn't perhaps understand -- I believe I still don't -- how things are, there, for comparison)
- perhaps would've spent more time thinking of my original (non-Touhou) story, however Touhou has helped me with some inspiration :p
- not having known about the amount of existing doujinsoft (not exactly Touhou-related), I would believe that it would be too hard for someone to create a PC game (outside of some independent developer examples found not through Touhou fandom)
- wouldn't have gotten motivation to create an account on nicovideo and pixiv :p
- would perhaps have spent more time trying to draw better (nowadays I rarely practice drawing)
- would've missed a series that have lots of potential for fanworks, due to its oriental atmosphere and characters; I don't remember getting interested in japanese culture like this, if not through Touhou. Also, would've missed the fanworks themselves, such as videos (A Day in Hakurei Shrine, Bad Apple stop motion version, gameplay/match videos, etc.)

tl;dr: I would've missed lots of stuff, but sometimes would probably change my preferences through something else. Still, i'm glad to be here :D

Probably a bit less active on the internet now. Touhou's also inspired me on a good amount of works I tend to do, without it I would probably be lacking in those places.

But seriously, I'd pretty much be the same, only with less ideas and less time on the internet.

I would have zero inspiration to do anything at all, and I likely wouldn't have spent 200 dollars on any game series but Touhou. That's what I did though.  :-\

Without Touhou, I'd be music illiterate. ZUN's music is what pulled me into studying music.

Studying music is one of the best thing I've ever encountered. So, logically, Touhou is one of the best thing I've ever encountered.

Touhou also got me into back into shmups (Ikaruga pulled me in first, but it didn't last long), then into arcade games in general.

I'd be less calmer, unable to focus on things, and because of that I'd have been unable to pass my final exam thanks to the lack of focus, so my life would be trash. And I won't have any friends, and I'd have probably succumbed to that manic, self-loathing pessimist depressed person I was 3 years ago. My optimism and personality change isn't caused by Touhou, but I already lost my interest in that thing what caused it.

Probably obsessed with some other video game. I mean, I went through Sonic, Final Fantasy, Mega Man, Guilty Gear ... I'll be fixated on something else within another few years, most likely.

This seems rather realistic. I mean after all, off the clock people spend time with what they want to spend time with. For this reason, since everybody here pretty much made the choice to spend that time with a video game series to begin with, I don't see why anybody why anybody would think they'd spend time doing something else more productive instead. Would it really make any difference in the decision which game it was, so long as that game was fun?

Possibly but it's doubtful. The only way I really see one doing otherwise is if Touhou was just such a great game that it's more or less the only one they consider worth playing. I'm not sure if for many who that could be the case for if they'd even try it to begin with though, since they'd probably be predisposed to lump it under the "its a video game so it sucks like all the others" category. To me, the Touhou only ideology really does seem like more of an opinion that'd form in a diehard fan after the fact, as opposed to being their driving cause for picking the series for that reason, in which case Touhou must already be assumed.

As for me, most of the other sites I've joined seem to be Final Fantasy centric, so I'd probably be spending more time with that. I do have quite a taste for Mario though so maybe I'd have shifted more into that direction. The only thing I could say for certain is that there'd probably a much larger void in my hard drive than there is now, since I'd first found out about the series mostly due to the fan community's artistic abilities. The quality fanart ratio seems to be much worse for other series. Perhaps if Touhou didn't exist at all the great artists involved would've spent their time with another series or perhaps even working professionally on something original, which very well could've influenced what I'd be into instead at this very moment. Contrary to the prior paragraph above, I suppose this is a rather realistic way that one could be doing something entirely different. Although in the end for most cases the difference would still probably be quite minimal, as obsession for one series

Now where would I be without video games in general? Now that I find an interesting question, although it's also one that's probably best left to the heavens to decide. You see, they'd entered my life at such a decisive stage in my life, that I could theoretically be an entirely different type of person without their influence. Things would likely be a lot more boring though in any case, as I certainly feel like I require something to keep my mind from atrophying. With that thought, I'd like to say perhaps I'd be a bit more like Sherlock Holmes, although that'd be mighty presumptuous of me to assume. Perhaps I'd be more artistically inclined? As I've mentioned above, I got into Touhou due to the impressive the art the community generated after-all and I'd have had more time to develop that. Nah, I can't really keep a steady enough hand for that. Possibly authoring stuff, since I like to write posts on the internet quite a lot, although that's mostly due to the fact that so few of my live friends don't share so many of my video game and anime related interests. So, I dunno really.

my lifestyle of ultimate healthiness would probably fall off a few ranks, consider Touhou music is basically my life here and all.

I imagine my H materials folder would have a whole lot less pretty pictures (50 gbs and counting)

my life would have been a significant difference, without meeting as many online friends who share the same passion, and less raging, and most of all...

up till last year, when I decide to start drawing again because of my friends here, would have never happened.

how life would have been quite meaningless, if not mundane had not Touhou paved the way for the other things to fall in line.

It's kind of interesting now that I think about. Despite Touhou being one of my "phases", it seems that each phase in general kind of comes along at a semi-appropriate time in my life.

When I was getting into Pokemon, I was learning how to make web pages, so Pokemon encouraged me to learn HTML.

When I was getting into music games, I was starting to really discover new kinds of music, and that encouraged me more to learn new songs.

When I moved to Japan and started to study Japanese, Touhou is encouraging me to learn and apply it, not to mention a few other things too.

So while I'd probably find another thing to whet my translation skills on more than likely, it just happened to come along at the right time.

I would never have discovered MoTK, or found Stuffman's D&D group... I probably wouldn't be getting along with Ebon as I am now, if I even would still be talking with him...

I suppose I wouldn't be making attempts at my own game by myself. Before I saw Touhou and ZUN's work, I was under the impression the only way my ideas would take form would be to get into the industry and convince a company to create my game. Looking back, I doubt I would have been successful and stuck in a career I wouldn't have liked.

well..for starters...

I would be built like a tank, run 5 marathons, Have like 17 chicks all over me, More money than everyone on Wallstreet COMBINED and have walked on the moon...

ok so I can't blame all of that not happening on Touhou...but at the very least I wouldn't have crossplayed

^ I love this post.  :))

I was thinking about what I'd do at a convention earlier, and then I realised I dont wanna try crossplaying before I've done even a fairly normal looking cosplay (if such exists) then I realised I basicly hardly watch any anime anymore so yeah... not gonna happen lol.
