Title: Star Wars- Any Fans?
Post by: CirnoFan on August 09, 2010, 10:05:13 PM
Michael, my little brother, says that Star Wars is more popular than any other type of media in the world, including Touhou. But this forum is full of Touhou fans. Are there any fans of Touhou and Star Wars at the same time?

I'm not a Star Wars fan, though.

Yes. Very yes. Not hardcore, but the only movies I'll ever stop to watch on TV without fail are Star Wars ones. Star Wars is definitely a favorite of mine.

Michael, my little brother, says that Star Wars is more popular than any other type of media in the world, including Touhou.
Science Time!  BV

First, as a technicality, Star Wars is not a type of media. It is a franchise spanning around a movie series that has been brought to pretty much any relevant medium. Thus we should compare different franchises to one another.

Second, the question is on what grounds popularity can be measured, evaluated and compared.

The most obvious idea would be to judge by the size of the fanbase. This would, however, bring up the eternal question of what constitutes an actual "fan".
If we set the bar low, then Star Wars would easily win out against touhou because it is generally a widely known movie series throughout the world, whereas touhou is well known only in Japan. However, in that case, there are many other well-known and popular franchises or artists who can rival Star Wars's. How about Star Trek? The Beatles? Disney? Harry Potter is on it's way there.
If we set the bar for "true" fandom high, then even with Starwars's expanded universe, the merchandise and all other ascpects, Touhou should not be too far behind, if at all, and several other franchises should be there as well. Star Trek says "hello" again, for example.
Middle ground is difficult.
If you want to include everybody who knows of the work and then quantify singular fans by degree of fan-hood, then I will tell you that this is futile on enough levels that I shouldn't have to explain it.

If we go by the size of works the franchise has produced, even with Star Wars's huge amount of merchandise, the Expanded Universe novels, the games et cetera, this all is not enough to overcome the ridiculous amounts of fanwork generated by the Touhou fandom.

:munch:
Oh, and on the topic of my own stance on Star Wars, yeah, the movies were entertaining. Even episode 1 and 2, because I hadn't seen the originals and was too young at that time to anticipate what was supposedly wrong with them. Then again, I don't regard the original trilogy as the huge masterworks many people claim them to be.

Oh yeah, and this thread may be better suited for the general off-topic forum, but don't take my word for this.

I was a huge fan of Star Wars when I was a kid.

Then the newer three movies came out, and my brother turned into a hyper-obsessive fanatic. I'm thoroughly sick of it now. :P

I will, however, watch the original trilogy anytime it's on, because it's nostalgic :3

Anything past that is pretty eh to me.

I'm kind of a fan in that manner that I like the six movies, played some games, and that's it. Also, while the 3 prequels were kinda good, I still say they were unnecessary.

DEUTSCHLAND TIME

Btw, I don't recall the new trilogy being the trainwreck all the old people claim it to be.
As a second generation fan I can't see both trilogies being that apart from each other, I see them as 6 movies, one story

I wanted a lightsaber as a child :(

I still want one, man. If I ever do become a teacher, whenever someone comes into my office, I will throw them one of those toy lightsabers (green or blue; the red ones are mine) and challenge them to a duel before I listen to them.

Oh and also

Star Wars being the most popular media franchise ever is quite possible, depending on the standards used. If one looks at gross revenue, for example, they'd certainly be way up there, while Touhou would not.
Title: Re: Star Wars- Any Fans?
Post by: nintendonut888 on August 09, 2010, 11:49:40 PM
Comparing Touhou to Star Wars is kind of silly, as Touhou is possibly the most popular independantly made franchise while Star Wars is so much more popular, being mainstream and all.

And yes, I do like Star Wars. I even think The Phantom Menace is an entertaining movie if taken at face value. I own a lightsaber toy and everything, but my sister never wants to fight me. :(

I've wanted a pair of them FX sabers for years, but that kind of stuff is bizarrely expensive and hard to find here.

There was just one dude selling a couple in the local Jedicon a couple of years ago, and he was asking R$500 each or something. I might import them one day, but that'll only happen when Japan and games stop stealing all my money

Massive Star Wars fan here. With my family, I once marathoned all six movies in one day.  Exhausting, but worth it.
And yes, I've got the original three nearly memorized.  Them, and Stackpole's books, are the best things to come from Star Wars.
Stackpole's books (actually the X-wing series in general) were one of the best things to come out of the Star Wars universe in general.

I think I like the Expanded Universe just as much as the movies.  The Star Wars EU is probably the biggest world building exercise wherein many characters, not just the ones seen in the movies may live.  Some of my favorite stories are the ones centered on the people not seen or only briefly seen in the movies.

I hear talk of fake lightsaber fights and now I wish I was a kid again.  And that doesn't happen very often. >.>

Oh man, I watched too much sci-fi when I was young (I blame/thank my parents).  Dr Who, Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Babylon 5 (although I don't remember much of that one, must rewatch it at some point), and of course Star Wars.  There was just... Something so awe inspiring in it that I can't quite pinpoint, but it was there.  Maybe it was the lightsaber fights, or the sheer menace of Darth Vader, or maybe I just liked the idea of a moon sized planet smashing space station. >.>

...Nah, it mostly came down to the fact that it was a fairytale IN SPAAAAAAAACE.  And, well, I've always been a sucker for fairytales.  And Star Wars was better than a regular fairytale due to all the laser swords and space battles and frigging Darth Vader.

...Oh man oh man, now I'm gonna have to watch those films again.  I blame all of you. >.<

I never got into starwars. Star trek though, <3... though voyager was disappointing, and enterprise is an utter disgrace.

Star wars Jedi outcast and Jedi academy are 2 very cool games, much better than force unleashed IMO.

...Nah, it mostly came down to the fact that it was a fairytale IN SPAAAAAAAACE.

Good call! I've heard Star Wars be described as Space Opera, but, with the EU and all the other shenanigans with the prequel trilogy and the Old Republic stuff, it feels more accurate to describe it as Space Fantasy. We have setting-prescribed Evil Cultists, Wizards, Themed Dungeons (what with every planet having exactly one ecosystem :V), Wandering Swordsmen etc. etc. etc.

It's certainly how I envisioned Star Wars when I ran my SAGA RPG, and it was a perfect fit.

Comparing Star Wars to Touhou is kind of absurd, since Star Wars is a gigantic world-spanning franchise that's been through every media imaginable, while Touhou is a series of indie games that's really only popular on the internet (and even then, mostly in Japan).

Also, claiming that people can't be fans of Touhou and Star Wars at the same time is kind of silly. That's like saying I can't be a fan of Pokemon and Silent Hill at the same time.

Of the members of this forum, many people don't even look into this off-topic forum.

Of the people who look into this off-topic forum, not everybody would be inclined to look at this thread; most people who are not interested in Star Wars would not even look at the thread. Meaning the sample is biased anyways.

I myself would not have looked at this thread hadn't it started out in CPMC.

I'm one of those weird people that actually liked one of the prequels (Episode 1), but that's probably because of my age at the time. Duel of the Fates was pretty awesome though.

Also I'm finishing Ruin right now, and can attest that Stackpole is a pretty good author, especially his ship-to-ship battles. Though the amount of times he ends chapters with someone saying "we must do x, or we're all doomed" is kinda funny. :V

I was and still am a major fan of Star Wars. There was one period in life where I'd watch one of the movies every single day of a week. No, seriously. I also love the games and comics and have an interested in the novels. In fact, I still go back and replay Rogue Squadron II every now and then. The only reason I don't have more Star Wars stuff in the house (namely, the freakin MOVIES) is from lack of room and cash, not to mention never having a reliable source for said goods.

Hopefully you're suggesting that by 'enjoy' you mean "People can come over my house and we can listen to the book together" and not "I will give you a bootleg copy". :x Because we have pretty strict anti-piracy rules over here, and depending on the copyright the rules would extend to audio books too.
