I'd like to help with the translation, but I've not worked on a game translation project before so I'm not totally sure how to go about it. Which files should I work on? And should I create new fields with the english or just overwrite the currently existing stuff? Lemme know how to do this and I'll start doing some stuff.

Completed quest.csv. Some notes/questions:
I wasn't really sure what to do with the \n linebreaks since there is often a different amount of text between the Japanese and the translation. I kept the same number of line breaks and tried to distribute them roughly evenly, but I have no idea how that will work out. Let me know so I can do it better in the future.
For quest reward items I used the names from Deranged's completed items.csv but there were two I couldn't find either in it or the original, オリ欠片 and アダ欠片. I had no idea what they were supposed to be so I just went with a straight transliteration (Ori Shard and Ada Shard), but they should probably be changed when someone figures out what they are.
A lot of the quests are silly references. I tried to keep them intact as much as I could but I may have missed some. I took out the untranslatable squid puns from the Ika Musume one, but if you really want me to add ika and geso to the end of every sentence I will.
Anyways look it over and give me some feedback so I can know how I'm doing.

Mystic could be a six-pointed-star on a purplish background. I'd use the one you're using for dark and make that one...well, darker.
EDIT: okay this applies both with your latest patch on poosh just now and with previous: in the Garden of the Sun, there's an enemy group comprised of two mantises, a sunflower, and a creepy gourd-thing. I'm dying to get back into this game now that skills are translated, but I'm having the same problem. 95 mode xp mode, admin mode, normal.. nothing, doesn't even look like it's loading anything at all.
As for applocale, I'm still trying to figure out how to do that shit with windows 7, not used to it quite yet. the virtual XP mode also seems to be harder to do than it should be. I hate learning new systems, blah.

Tried again. Patchy took out Tewi by herself with one last Agni Shine, everyone else died. Got Reisen to about half health, and then she went "lol, no" and used one of her moves that hits the whole party with berzerk.

Also, Tewi's first line has a bit of kanji in it at the end for me, and her second crashed my game.

The weapon property 物理ディフレクト means "physical deflection", not destruction.
Also, during the pre-battle dialog with Satori, I noticed that some dialogs were mistimed - when Satori reads the last three minds, the three whose minds are being read should have said their lines before everyone start surrounding Satori, but right now everyone just starts surrounding Satori right after she reads the three minds, and then the lines proceed per normal.
Also, the final ability in Marisa's Astronomy tree should grant +1 resistant to Mystic as well (in addition to Fire/Water/Earth/Elec). This mistake was on the wiki as well (I just corrected it). Similarly, the 2pt and 13pt abilities on Patchouli's first tree are supposed to be "normal danmaku damage +x%", not non-elemental damage.
The "AT" thing that's on the menu screen (and other character-related menu pages) means "experience til next level", which "AT" has no connection to. (I'm guessing it was phonetically translated from "ato")

I just found a serious error regarding abilities - all those ones that adds the mysterious "land effects" in descriptions? They're not land effects nor do they have anything to do with land. They're elemental strength (ie they increase the damage done via elemental weakness, and damage resisted via elemental resistance).
Affected abilties:
Reimu's 1pt, 7pt and 20pt abilities of her first tree
Marisa's 1pt, 7pt and 20pt abilities of her Astronomy tree
Sanae's 3pt ability of her Youkai Extermination tree
Patchouli's 10pt ability of her Spirit Magic tree
Nitori's commander ability, 1pt, 7pt and 16pt abilities of her Research tree (Nitori's ability descriptions are a mess anyways)
Byakuren's 3pt ability Air Scroll tree
Mokou's 3pt ability Phoenix tree
Cirno's 1pt ability Fairy Power tree
16pt ability of Sword tree
I just crashed the game 3 times now doing the same thing. In the sunflower dungeon, whenever I encounter an enemy that looks like a hanging fanged peanut from a leafy branch thing.. err.. or a pea, or something. anyway:I had the exact same issue with the same monster. Reinstalling fixed it, but this is now happening with another monster in my bestiary from Eientei, and reinstalling has not corrected it this time. No idea why. :(

That one. Whenever I select it, the game crashes, before it gets selected so.. I'm not pointing at the right enemy when the game crashed of course. Crashes in windoze 95 mode for me too (I don't seem to need to use 95 mode but I tried just in case).

Silly typo for monster encyclopedia. monster 3, if you goto hints, it says "a vicious horney" instead of hornet.
edit: Skills that say "separate" under target have the 'te' overlap with the delay text. Perhaps "single" would be better?

You have to be at the latest version to use the patch. If the problem is the second (something I experienced myself) you'll need to reinstall your game. You can preserver your save file, so no progress is lost.

I have a habit of running japanese games through Microsoft Applocale, since most of them require that I do. Running Sappheiros without it has improved stability - that is to say, it doesn't crash anymore, but it does take a bit more CPU power than it used to when going through the Growth menu.

The game always crashes for me upon meeting Iku right when the party says "oh? You're...". Getting rid of game.pak and replacing it with the original japanese file fixes the problem.

Sweet thanks for the fast update...Unfortunately I found another crashbug very shortly afterwards, and again, 95 doesn't work, and dumping the patch altogether does.Just checked it out on my end. Didn't get crashed at all after replaying the cutscene at least 10 times. Might be another case of a crash that only effects certain computer setups?
After solving the total BS switch puzzle between stages 13 and 14, when you go north and you come to a cutscene where tenshi is talking to herself on a chair, she says something like "when are they coming". After which, you hear a "ding" like you hear whenever someone is surprised or something, , and the game crashes. With Japanese game.pak, the "ding" is Tenshi opening her eyes and getting a startled emote thing suddenly, along with scary music. In English, you hear the ding, but no opening of the eyes and no startle expression, but it DOES get the scary music then it freezes.
Will upload a save file if needed just before the crash.

I think it just may be best to leave the Kanji. The in game land elements modifying moves use the kanji, consistency wise.If I was going to learn the Kanji, I'd pretty much need to have a piece of paper in front of me to tell me which was what. My handwriting is NOWHERE near neat enough to make this myself (My handwriting is really, really bad. I tend to cross out my name after writing it and write it again because it's entirely illegible. This is with simple english letters, kanji would be nightmarish :c)
No harm in people learning some Kanji. I would like to hear people's opinions on this though.

I know this isn't exactly a translation question, but any chance of a modified Satori chance to learn things? 1% chance to learn spells from bosses when you can only roll the learn chance once a battle is really, really, really dumb. At the least lemme know how to unpack, change, and repack the file myself? :) I would personally probably make all spells base 33% (assuming her learning skill is +200% as stated, and not 200% better), so that maxed learning skill would always learn spells.

Most of them are minor typo or consistency fixes, though there were a few images that apparently weren't identified as needing translation in the first sweep; I've since added them to the main file. The other text file imagetrans_changes denotes the files that were either not marked for translation in the original file TheNewGuy posted, or whose translations I have changed since.

Putting the game on Win95 compatibility should stop almost all of the crashes. My game still crashes from time to time, but it's very uncommon and not localized in dialouge (more like in screen changes, such as leaving a stage) and usually preceded by strange ingame slowdown that gives me more then enough time to enter the menu, therefore saving the game.
You might be one of those people (Like my friend) that just gets a crash every now and then at the end of a scene though, and I don't know what to do about that, if there's anything. You can skip talk scenes with one of the buttons, if that helps, but I understand it'd be really annoying to beat a boss and then crash.

The BGM for the Netherworld (Like Looking at the World after Death) appears to have the bottom of some the text from whatever is above it in the image appear at the top. Ditto for Garden of the Sun (Clear Weath Flower Garden, look above the right side of "Weath"), Former Hell of Blazing Fires (Underworld Psychological Hell), and Muenzeka (Born From Dust Return to Dust).
Speaking of Garden of the Sun, maybe "Weath" should be "Weather"? I don't think space is the constraint since smaller font sizes were used in longer titles.

@TheNewGuy - I have the untranslated 2.06 tables that I got from Choja some months back, and while working on my bestiary export I noticed a problem:

There's another few oddities (some monsters have missing mcid fields even though they look more or less compete otherwise), but since I didn't catch a formation with the ones I've tried I'm assuming that they aren't used.
I was more curious as to what the resists defaulted to when a match failed. For now I'm assuming row id 0, which is neutral to everything.
I've been working on getting the bestiary (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1565165/GoS/bestiary.html) dumped, which is how I stumbled across it (got a KeyError when looking it up since it doesn't exist). That and the treasure list in the event that the translated non-dialogue tables ever get posted (it'd be easy to just grab the English versions by loading the correct files) since I was reliant on the Japanese wiki/checklist.

And now that I think of it, I think the resists on one of Alice's Greaves were higher than it should have been. Specifically, Chain Greaves is listed on the JP wiki as having ○ resist against Stun, but is listed as having ◎ resists in the English table. I just updated the item table linked in my previous post.

Which isn't to say that there aren't any issues, it just seems odd that it is problematic. I mean, the game dump from the untranslated version is UTF-8, right? Does everything still work if you were to create a Game.pak from those untranslated tables?

Unavoidable crash after you rerecruit Mokou in the expansion! After the screen goes black, it crashes instead of going to the world map. Double-checked to make sure it wasn't just some random thing that doesn't always happen.'I don't know if I'm playing the expansion or not (it says ver 2.06 here, so I suppose I am), but I just recruited Mokou without any problem at all.
@TheNewGuy - Would you mind upping a clean (unedited) dump of the untranslated table that Akyu uses for her usual non-event dialogue (can I has new items?)?
I'm not sure if it's related to the crashes, but I noticed that some of the of the string-related code (specifically several uses of the function that would take Shift-JIS and convert it to UTF-16 (MultiByteToWideChar) expects some strings to be null terminated. I'm not sure if they would be preserved when dumping or packing (you'd have to ask Mauve about that one). At least a few uses of the inverse of that function (WideCharToMultiByte) excepts the same. They could also be used for non-table related things, but I haven't gotten around to poking at it with a debugger to confirm if the warning that you wrote too much happens on or shortly after one of those functions.
EDIT: And by the null terminators, I'm specifically wondering if the strings used for the dialogue (msg column) should be null terminated, not the individual rows of the file.
Also, a translated catl.csv would be nice because I think edu.csv uses it to determine an enemy's status resistance (per category, and per ailment). I believe m1-m20 specifies the resistance level (or none if omitted), and catl1-20 specifies a resistance or resistance category (instant death, or quick type).

In the formations menu it was translated as "Master of All"

My game is crashing during the dialog after I fight Remilia towards the beginning of the game. I was wondering if there is a known fix for this or not.

I just seem to have one problem. Every time I try to cast a spell the games crashes to the desktop. I tried fiddling with the graphics settings, but no dice. I think it might be trying to load Japanese and English text as mentioned earlier, for there is no problem when I cast spells with the unpatched Japanese version.
Anyone have a fix for this? Several people are playing with the patch, so I know I'm probably setting the game up wrong.
Put them in the same folder as the game. Run the patch, then when a file-select menu pops up, select the folder you have the game in and hit enter. The translation only works with the updated expansion.
Make sure that you had the original japanese .pak's in place when you were updating. If you try updating on the English ones it wont work.Blah, still crashes. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I saw any mention of Lingering Summer Heat in my original download.
Hello, this is something minor, but when you talk with Akyuu after unlocking all the recipes(pre-post game), this gets repeated:

The only other advice I can give you is skip that dialogue by pressing the skip button, whatever it is.I've gone through the dialogue a few times with the same result.
The way I encounter crashes is once after the dialogue completes, it crashes, then if I reload the game and replay it, that same dialogue won't crash.

Just remember: you have to change the language of non-Unicode programs (or something like that, I'll check my W7 machine later) to Japanese, not the language of your system. That's a somewhat common mistake some Windows 7 users do.

The level 3 shields, Archangel Shield, Archdemon Shield, Sodom Shield, Tartarus Shield, Cocytus Shield, and Gehenna Shield.
If they follow the pattern of their level 2 and level 1 incarnations, they should allow you to block Slash, Pierce, and Strike,

The pattern for Archangel shield should be, it cannot block the opposing element(Dark), has Star vs the element it is in(Light), and
can block everything else at penalty, in this case Triangle. The level 1 and 2 versions have solid Triangles, while the level 3 versions seem
to have a hollow Triangle.
With the exception of Mystic, since they have no real opposing element, Mystic versions cannot block Slash, Pierce, and Strike.

Monster #47 doesn't have a name in the encyclopedia. I have yet to determine whether it has one when you actually encounter it (I'll go back to stage 6 after I'm finished with 15).
Also, Pinaka should have Slayer: Spirits rather than Slayer: Ghosts.
(And I'm still waiting for the answer whether monster formation data are present in the csv files or not...)
Thanks for letting me know.region.csv contains collections of enemy formations. The mons01-mons15 columns references an enemy in monster.csv. The file as a whole is rather confusing, though.
As for monster formations, there is no convenient way of determining what makes up the formation.
The monster.csv file contains data for "mobs" which is just stored as digits, this may have to do with what monsters appear together.And only some of the enemy data is in that file. It also references other files for things like their skills as well as elemental and status resistances.

The reason behind using applocale was the original Japanese text, if I'm not mistaken. But with the font change, the only Japanese text left appears as images, which shouldn't require applocale.
Compatibility mode was used to synch WITH APPLOCALE. no applocale = no compatibility mode. The game ought to run fine if it's patched correctly. At least, it has for me, and for the 4-5 other people I've shared it with. *shiftyeyesquestionablemethodofacquisition*Last I checked the game will crash without compatibility mode even if you aren't using AppLocale (I have this problem with Windows default language setting on Japanese). Using compatibility mode (or if you're willing to tinker with ACT, the EmulateHeap fix) just means that the game never knows about the bad things it is doing and you'll still have those odd random crashes instead of the easily reproducible ones (just talk to an NPC).

Ok, so I got the game, updated it to 107 and 206, put the english patch in according to this site, http://www.craneanime.com/2011/09/thourpg.html, but my game keeps on crashing when I am fighting. Any advice? Or can someone create an expanded and updated version with the English patch for download since I am unsure on how to install the english patch and the cvs's. Everything else is fine, but when I am fighting the game just closes on me or if it does let me fight, then when I click on any move other than the first selection it crashes. Also, is it just me, or does the Growth command not work?

The graphical quality is a lot higher, yeah. Although I love GoS's detailed but slightly pixely style too. And DoD's attack animations in many cases seem to be a good bit less, well, how to explain... but that might change in the expansion release! It's still great, it's just more casual, which isn't a bad thing! I'm super looking forward to playing it.

Genius of Sappheiros sported an incredibly high difficulty that even scared me a little bit, and I've finished some incredibly difficult games myself. The main issue with Genius of Sappheiros' difficulty is a lot of it requires inane amounts of grinding in order to actuate the "deep strategy" required to beat some bosses. By the time you supersede that grinding stage, it is only then and there that the game becomes reasonably easy, whereas DoD's difficulty is a lot more balanced and requires more thought than it does grind (though grinding DOES help speed things up, it is in no way necessary). GoS is significantly more SaGa-like in difficulty while DoD adapts some of the more friendly SaGa aspects and throws out a bunch of the unfairness, though if there's still one thing that makes DoD brutal later on it's the absurdity of the random enemy stats - why the fuck are randoms in DoD endgame so freaking high-powered for no reason? The difficulty curve spikes are insane in that game. That is pretty much the only real gripe I can point out here (for me, personally, YMMV).

Nice to see a professional translator on board! I'm an amateur Japanese-to-English and Chinese-to-English translator myself (Chinese being my 1st language and Japanese my 3rd), and I've worked on some games, stories and mangoes. I actually did part of the initial work on Genius of Sappheiros before having to hop off due to university concerns (and I did some translation for MotK's Story of Eastern Wonderland ENG patch) and I think it's safe to say that all translators are welcome ;P

The only two big problem spots I had were Stage 18 and it's boss, which weren't really grinding related as much as some degree of luck and a large degree of figuring out what I was doing (Doing octopus lady without messing up my other parties was tricky, but I eventually figured a mostly safe strategy out), and then the final boss, which I had an extreme amount of fun figuring out a strategy for without grinding more then... less then 5 Yukkuri Kings total. I did want to get Youmu to 60 for her Moon Reflecting Paschal Satellite Slash or whatever it's called, and Mokou to 57~58 for her reraise-all, but that's about all I got from the yukkuri kings. And then once I had it figured out, all I needed was a little luck to get through the second phase through chances of doublecasts, magic crits, and Sanae's Last Word.

Satori stuffI actually find her pretty good with magic, but she absolutely needs a staff for that - her eyes just aren't that good for it. As soon as you're able to get 20 points in Learning and 13 in Third Eye, she should be on par with Marisa and Patchouli. She's also the only other reliable Dark magic user, since Patchy's too busy having bombs with long cooldowns, and Demon Shock is actually stronger than her basic elemental spells if I'm not mistaken. Bio (thank you Weekend!) seems to be pretty good for a cheap skill too.
Another thing, Reimu's growth ability says "healing spells cure permanent effects", but she only removes a few of them. Paralyze for example is removed by it, but charm, petrify, curse, and more aren't. What exactly does that ability heal?
Tentacle is pretty nice thoughUrh, the RNG is being an arse to me when I'm trying to learn Tentacle in Blazing Fires. Satori *just won't learn this* for some reason. Funny because I already have all the elemental Arrow spells at the same learning percentage, yet I got them almost immediately after Maxing out Satorin's learning%.

Mad Thunder is great since one of the strats for Terminator Mk.II involves using Satori's debuff, and Mad Thunder is one of the strongest things to hit it with; and, since you'll want lots of the Super Aja it gives... or even just the EXP/sidequest reset (it appears a lot...), I ended up doing that fight a lot. Especially considering you're talking about hitting 99s? That means you will see that battle a LOT.I agree we need that thread, however, Reimu's permanent healing ability is related to the translation. I still think it should say "heals SOME permanent effects" in the game instead of just healing permanents. I have no idea what it said in the original language, but it will usually cost a boss battle or two to be unable to recover your party from, let's say, petrify, when you expect that you can.

Not sure what might be the issue with some of those lines.
-Currently, the game isn't very clear on 结界 and 障壁, and call them all "barrier". For accessories this isn't much of a problem because all the magic damage-reducing barrier accessories say "magic damage reduced" instead, but it leads to some problems in character growths. Namely, Patchouli and Sanae's Magical Barrier are 障壁 (evasion) and Remilia's Magical Barrier is 结界 (damage reduction).Byakuren's armors have Magic Barrier too iirc, as does one of the formations.
hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster here. I've got a bit of a problem and i was hoping you guys might be able to help me out. See about a week ago i started getting spash screens while starting the game telling me to link my game up to my twitter, if i ignored this then i could play the game normally but the sound wouldn't work and the game would not save, this problem persisted even after i linked up to twitter and will not go away. If anybody has any information that could help me, i would greatly appreciate it.
Using japanese locale will fix that font issue.
Touhou Labyrinth had a similar issue, except it's incorrect font was just ugly, not somewhat unreadable.

As noted in the manual all quick effects are displayed with a '!' icon. The updated manual specifically lists all the condition groups and what falls under them.I was reading the old manual at the time, only worth noting that isn't explained in the game is that Sakuya is able to defend herself with shields while using 2-Handed weapons only if she doesn't attack or use skills, same for characters with staffs (and spears).

In any case, it's nice to see exactly what the four stunning types do.Daze is really weird, Alice's Little Legion won't be down if she is Dazed, but Parrars will be, and it doesn't reduce Evasion or Shield Evasion. Permanents like Paralysis make Little Legion go down, this is why she has weapons and armor with full immunity to both Stun/Paralysis (Alice can still deflect physical attacks while Paralyzed).

That message's just telling you that you need to insert your Windows XP CD for it to copy the files.
So... let me get this straight. For Variety effects, the formula is something like Lv*IND Effect? So, for Wind of Swords (as an example) with a 100 IND Sanae, it would be 125% of 15 (Level 1 IND 100 is 125% and the Level of Wind of Swords is 15) equals about +19 PATK? Uh... that makes it seem like attacking buffs plain out suck. What does the "level" value mean, because the way you worded it makes it seem like a flat value added to the original stat (in the case of stat buffs, at least), and buffs have a greater effect than that, I'm sure.Changed the description I understand "amount" seemed too ambigous. It is either percentage or a flat value like explained (Maid is mixed), Status Enhance is % based, so if Variety Status PATK +80% + Enhance 30%, then PATK +104%.

Of course I've been really terribly busy lately. Slightly on the upside patches for Summoners and DoD came out so some grief was spared there. Anyway, I can't guarantee a large increase in activity until we start getting to summer. Barring maybe a surprise translation dump. Terribly sorry, my pace drives me nuts too.
EDIT: By the way... can someone translate that Japanese title? All I get from ATLAS is "Eastern Fantasy Dream," and the characters 妖譚 are left untranslated.Touhou Genmu Youtan (とう ほうげんむようたん), it seems to be a pretty literal "Nightmare of Rebellion"

Folder does not contain Japanese text in the name. This is a particularly troublesome thing to troubleshoot because no changes were made to the game or its directory when it started this glitch. However I do not recall changing any computer settings making it difficult to figure out why this is happening.

The game needs to be untranslated (in Japanese) for the Update to be correctly applied, it uses a MD5 Check before patching files which fails otherwise blocking the update as intended.I downloaded the 3.01 patched version.You downloaded the patch from here?

I think playing in different locale can change the text's font and size. When I played in chinese locale, the text become much more smaller. Maybe you should try change your locale.
Just talk to Akyuu multiple times and you'll trigger all the recipes you missed.
