The stream description mentioned "trailer(s) for new work(s)", which can mean several different things: trailers for new Play,Doujin! fan games, a new Twilight Frontier game, or a new game by ZUN.

Aqua Style have said they have some new Play,Doujin! titles that will soon be announced. However, they are after all calling ZUN the main star of the show, which may indicate the new title is ZUN's.

I think the bigger question is, how drunk will ZUN be by the 8 hour mark?

Poor guy only finished TH15 a few months ago, I doubt he's had time to churn out another one. Unless it's a new Sealing Club CD.

That's a handful of musical guests that had representatives at TouhouCon. I wonder if any of them will comment on it.

A little obligatory analysis.

Aqua Style has a Play,Doujin! game announcement stream (https://twitter.com/_AQUASTYLE/status/653758785740144641) scheduled at 2:00 PM, one hour before the party. So if nothing else, they will be able to repeat Aqua Style's announcement at the party. However, their guest list notably consists of only musicians and Tasofro, no one involved with Play,Doujin!. It's possible the announcement has nothing to do with the fan game developers.

For ZUN, we can just look at what he has been doing these days. In Sep 30's Nikenme Radio, he said (http://blog.livedoor.jp/tohomemory/archives/45565623.html) he will "fix Touhou Kanjuden's bugs tomorrow. The patch should come out by the evening." Afterwards:
Quote
Oct 1: (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/649402652384620544) I said I'll release the patch in yesterday's Nikenme Radio. But my son has caught a cold, and I must take care of him.

Oct 4: (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/650485412176105472) Ahhh, today is finally time for Reitaisai's circles to have an after party. Last wee we had an after party for ZUN Beer. There must be a spatio-temporal distortion.

Oct 5: (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/650854722941923328) Now, I haven't sat down before my PC in a long while.

Oct 5: (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/650931972395548672) Updated my blog. Did the ver1.00b patch. kourindou.exblog.jp/23743249/

Oct 5: (https://twitter.com/korindo/status/650932213089853440) Both the bugs and how to replicate them are summarized by the wikis. What a happy way to do debugging.

The guy hasn't touched his PC for nearly two months. If he had anything to announce, it must be made in the ten days since he made the LoLK patch. By comparison, there's a better chance the new game is a Tasofro fighter.

It could always just be a trailer for a Playism version of LoLK. A new Tasofro fighter would be surprising, although they could just be expanding ULiL.

Both of these are equally good. On one hand I can finally play LoLK, and on the other hand the ULiL roster might be expanded. You can't really go wrong with either!

Just to know, how long did it take for ZUN to make ISC, StB, DS, and FW? Is there a chance he releases something similar at C89 if he started working at it only some days ago?
Title: Re: Touhou Project 20th Anniversary Drinking Party livestream
Post by: TresserT on October 16, 2015, 11:09:18 PM
IIRC, ZUN spent only a month or two on ISC. So it's possible. Though there have been a ton of new touhou releases this year, between ULiL, LoLK, and the new manga, so I would be really surprised if he pumped out a new game so quickly. I'd guess it's probably a fan game.

Wish "new titles" could also mean "new artbooks".
I don't know, a new Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red would be great. Like, Aya just reappeared out of nowhere on Forbidden Scrollery.
And that usually means a lot.

I'd say it's possible he has something in mind for the Digital Game Expo next month, like how he had that Gold Rush version of ISC last year.

Apparently ZUN will play Lunatic LoLK at Reitaisai

Hojo-san showed off a picture of Clownpiece-san again, and Stormtrooper Reimu

Okonogi said some probably important things I didn't pay attention to

The Reitaisai crew mentioned TouhouCon and Reitaisai in Taiwan.
The 2015 Spring Reitaisai have the largest number of attendance, at 52000. Of which, 7000 answered their survey, showing a distribution of 49% in their 10s, and 39% in their 20s.

Their plans for the next year will be revealed at tomorrow's Autumn Reitaisai 2015.

And here comes Okonogi.

EDIT:
Okonogi: The version of Touhou timeline published in the magazine is full of typos, and the one they have on the stage has been corrected.

Okonogi: (Talking about the Bougetsushou period) Back at that time ZUN-san was still a hard worker.

Okonogi personally would like to do a second danmaku book like GoM, not necessarily narrated by Marisa.

EDIT2:
Akiyama Uni.

They mentioned the first meeting between ZUN and Tasofro, where Tasofro's members coming to approach ZUN at Comiket, when he was releasing PCB.

The composition of "Broken Moon" didn't take a long time.

U2: Beat Mario is not in ULiL.
Mario: Yeah, why is Beat Mario not in ULiL?
U2: So do I wonder.
Mario: Actually it was me. I felt so much pressure I couldn't write anything. I called Unabara-san, "Unabara-san, I'm sorry I haven't contacted you. I can't do it."
Unabara: It doesn't matter you can't do it. Just remember to keep in touch.

ZUN mimicks how shady Unabara appeared when he approached ZUN for the first time.

Followed by Sekken'ya.

Watcher survey: Have you been to Flowering Night?
1. I've been to it.  - 7.3%
2. I've heard of it. - 56.6%
3. I haven't heard of it. - 36.1%

It seems Flowering NightI was terminated for reasons that are difficult to discuss.

The manga writer Zekuu Tooru (who seems to be the show writer here?) replaces Beat Mario as the host.

Beat Mario says he first noticed ZUN, thinking "this guy will be popular", when he heard the Shuusou Gyoku (Seihou 1) soundtrack.

ZUN mentions something about writing a new song the day before his college's cultural festival, and adding it immediately into the game.

ZUN misnames "Bad Apple!" as "Big Apple".

ZUN gloats: "You seldom see a shooting game like that." Other: "Isn't this pretty commonplace?" Another: "It was uncommon back THEN."

JYUNYA enters. Time to play Mystery Gensokyo.

Mystery Gensokyo is followed by Gensou Sky Drift.

When playing the Bamboo Forest stage, ZUN says: "How do you even race in the Bamboo Forest? You will get lost."

It's not guaranteed, but somebody probably will archive this whole stream.

First match: ZUN's Reimu vs. the LPer Herunian's Mamizou. Herunian wins.

Second match: ZUN's Reimu vs. Beat Mario's Koishi. Mario wins.

Third match: A random match, Unabara draws Hijiri, ZUN draws Kokoro. Unabara would win, but ZUN cheated by quitting the game.

It's NicoNico Self-made Game Fest 2016, their online celebration of amateur game development. They are reminding you the next year they will still have a ZUN Award given by ZUN, and a Reitaisai Award for Touhou fan games. The 2016 fest will be open to paid games, not be limited to free games.

The third session begins with Ban showing the 20-litre beer barrel from the show's beginning, now empty.

Afterwards it's IOSYS. The fact that people used to hate IOSYS for attracting the flood of noobs is brought up.

Mario: Today there are many circles who cut their teeth on Touhou.
ZUN: This is my ideal state. People start with making Touhou doujin works, and later move on to their own doujin creations.

The show has ended. If you are wondering about the "trailers", they turn out to be a few short clips promoting the music circles' upcoming albums, shown during each circle's segment.

The show went surprisingly smoothly, despite Beat Mario hogging the screen throughout. As long as you know what to expect from him, the show would be an enjoyable watch.

Also, lots of new ZUN gifs.

Some other exchanges:

Mario: Do you want your son to make shmups?
ZUN: I want him to become a person without prejudice.
Mario: What if he becomes addicted to NicoNico videos?
ZUN: I'm not prejudiced.

Mario: You can do a collaboration with Type-Moon.
ZUN: Talk about something nobody needs.
[He used the internet slang 誰得, meaning "who is going to benefit from that?", in the sense that a product is something nobody wants, and neither the maker nor the consumers have anything to gain from its existence.]

Someone asks about making a Touhou anime.
ZUN: I don't have any particular reason to make one.

Good for Beat Mario, he couldn't stop talking about it throughout the event.

Ahh lovely stuff.

People sneer at IOSYS, but at the time they were getting noticed in the west (like 2007/2008, if I remember right?) they actually did some great songs that I still listen to today. There's a number of talented people in that circle, too. Yes, they were like the Noob Bat Signal for Touhou, but I guess that's only a bad thing if you want the fandom to be yet another humorless, elitist clique. IOSYS is fun, and like Touhou, I enjoy them without shame or irony.

Well, because (as Beat Mario told us during the party), Itou Life is a middle school classmate and long-time friend of his, and whenever Mario makes a public appearance, he seems unable to shut up about Itou.

Speaking of, Itou Life tweeted (https://twitter.com/itolife/status/655303031211233280) (thanks to a 4chan heads-up):

ZUN-san may not remember it, but we once had some chat during the after party of Flowering Night.

Like "all Touhou characters are children", "danmaku is erotic" is one of ZUN's often repeated mantras.

I disagree. Seiga might have more curves, but Shou really knows how to show them off. Letty's not half bad either.

Despite his lack of prose or verse skills, ZUN thinks like a classical poet, the kind of person who values wit greater than his life. He must inject every second sentence he utters or writes with a twist of language. He will use a rhetorical device when he could, and sometimes even when he shouldn't.

I wouldn't go as far as say that Itou and ZUN are friends, really, but given the prominence of both in the doujin world, it's entirely possible they crossed paths at some point.

But it was pretty cool to see him getting into the musically performances and stuff, although he seemed more comfortable during Sound Holic's than with Beatmario's. :V

Having seen the performance, it just looked like ZUN felt a bit embarrassed because of all the attention he was getting in the song (Beat Mario changed some of the lyrics to say 'Happy 20th Anniversary' and 'Jun'ya Oota!') and by the time SOUND HOLIC performed he had 8 hours worth of booze running through his system, which would stop anyone being shy, lol.

(Kinda sad this thread went from being a really interesting discussion on the stream to 'omg, someone mentioned sex! Porn! BOOBS!' C'mon guys.)

ZUN is bad at vidya: the stream
(who plays touhou with a pad though, seriously)

that time ZUN made people get on stage, in front of a crowd and a stream, and attempt to play the then-newly-released Double Spoiler with a pad. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCEh0yQIKzA)

I'll have to take your word for it. I imagine it would be a lot of fun, but I can't see myself playing better using an arcade stick instead of keys.

It's really a matter of comfort, instead of using your fingers to move, you use your wrist. Reaction time is the same since movement is natural, and buttons are even more sensible than on a keyboard. Directions are also way more precise than people think.

I don't think people would be that much troubled by it, considering most CAVE and Psikyo shmups in Japan are still played on arcade cabinets. Heck, even over here we still use our arcade cabinet to play shmups, it's so comfy.

Almost everyone in Japan plays games using controllers or arcade sticks... There's a reason why they're still stuck using an awkward default keyboard control scheme from the 80s which can't be changed at all in most games, even commercial ones, and when they use different defaults it's something completely random.

Shmups controls are good with arcade sticks

As a shmup player who has played both retro and newer shmups on arcade cabinets with a joystick configuration, I can honestly say that I do not enjoy using a joystick for shmups at all. First of all there is the wrist strain that I get from keeping my wrist in a certain position when playing shmups with a joystick for long periods of time (arcade freeplay!) which in turn effects my performance in the game. Anything that effects your performance in any game that *demands* precision control is not a good control scheme. I have to keep my wrist on a flat surface to rest it from being fatigued and with a joystick of particular height I always have to have it elevated from the surface and in turn, have the elevated hand disadvantage.

Second, with joysticks and even the twin sticks on a PS2 or similar controller, the lack of hard set sensitivity on really light presses of the stick might not register if you were light on the touch. Also keep in mind that when you tilt a joystick all the way in one direction, you are going to have to take a few extra milliseconds to move the stick in the other direction which on a keyboard layout of left, right,up,down or WASD you don't have that problem. This tiny flaw could be the difference between you barely missing that surprise bullet that came out of nowhere or just plain out getting hit by it and this is *detrimental* to being good at shmups. This also adds to getting the unique frill of almost dying but because of your skill and reflexes you survived.

Third and finally, Nearly 1 out of 4 shmup arcade machines that I play, retro or newer, always seem to have a broken or wonky/slightly off joystick control when I play them. I assume that when people play the games on them, they carelessly jerk the joystick around in the thick of the moment when they are distracted by the game and just end up breaking the joystick. I remember an occasion when I played 1944 on a retro cabinet and I had to play the damn game by pushing the joystick as hard as I could in all directions just to register your movement. So, joysticks are more prone to breaking when hard set buttons simply are less prone to that problem.

You know what I think is the ideal type of control to have in a shmup? A touch pad and a smooth tip electronic stylus pen like the Nintendo 3DS has. You have pinpoint accuracy and it takes less from your hand to move around the game and dodge. You move using a lower touch pad for input and stare at a larger monitor on top so that your pen/hand isn't in the way like you have with smart phone games. I believe that this configuration is optimal. A mouse for control is a close second, third would be the traditional keyboard control Touhou has and last would be a joystick.

Think about those things I brought up the next time you decide to use a joystick for anything, especially shmups.

The Danmaku was intense, like wet rain dripping on your mouth. Long, thick, hard, curvy lasers burst forth from the enemy and penetrated out heroines hitbox. It came deep inside our heroine and pierced through her in a forceful thrust. She had no time to have it graze and touch her against her smooth, delicate skin. This instance climaxed in a massive explosion that rocked the screen.

*pichoon*  ;)

I hope you realize that you're basically telling people not to buy an arcade stick because you never learned how to hold one properly and all of the places you went to had bad sticks. Changing directions on a good stick isn't a big deal unless you have very weak arms and there are people using the same stick since the late PSX/Saturn era. Good parts are very durable and aren't too hard replace.

Oh, lovely, bringing this silly debate into what is supposed to be about Touhou's 20th anniversiary and the stream of greatness.. On which controls are the superior sort to play Touhou with... WHO FUCKING CARES?!

Uh, I mean, it's still pretty surprising Touhou's been around for 20 years now. HRtP came out while I was still in middle school. It's pretty cray-cray. And it was all originally for a programming class project, too. Here's to another two decades of touhou... or maybe one... or a half.

The ZUN man might die but the legend and his legacy will always live on.

Seriously, if the ZUN son doesn't grow up to carry the torch then one of his close friends probably will...  and the half of Japan who makes Touhou Doujin works. I mean, there's freaking Touhou festivals. It's a phenomenon!

I didn't realize a whole debate was gonna kick off over it. I just wanted to steer the topic away from the whole ero angle.

It is pretty nuts. I mean a whole generation has passed in the intervening time. That's what I find assuring about his repeated pronouncements that he'd keep right on going even if the fandom was reduced to nothing. It's a personal passion for him, and it shows.

Not that it really matters which controls/device is superiour to play shmups, though there seems to be a major difference and opinion.

In the last interview I did notice ZUN using a gamepad at home when testing his latest Touhou production. That was the first time I've witnessed it and it really confused me.

I "grew up"  to use the keyboard for Touhou, mainly because I am not a shmup player. Arcades are non-existent in my country (lately) and I don't really have the urge to play one either. During my trip in Japan I played an old famicom or w/e it was in a Hostel. The game was called "Twin Bees" and you guess what: A gamepad was your control. Do-able I guess for such games? No idea.

Regarding joysticks > I can see their potential benefits for shmups, flight simulators, gundam simulators and such. Therefore the story of Halfgrand is recognizable. Though for me they also have their downside which is personal discomfort. For example a fighting game like Dead or Alive 5 I can manage decent on a PS gamepad. But when I was in the arcade I had to use a stick. I couldn't even perform 1 combo and got my ass kicked brutally for no reason. Well, there is a reason: "Not being used to joysticks".

One sets his mouse sensitivity in FPS to +100 and kicks ass. Another one sets it to -100 and kicks ass.

TL DR: Personal comfort > theories.

That said, did anybody see the part of the stream where ZUN uses a fucking shoulder cannon confetti launcher? Bad ass imo!

Make it happen, all you Danmakufu scripters who make ZUN boss battles.

Also, am I the only one to notice that when ZUN brings out the launcher and fires it, his shirt and his hat make him look camouflaged as hell. It played tricks on my eyes.

COMMANDO ZUN!

Also, ZUN needs to release a clothing brand, especially with that style of his... ZUN Wear!
