Title: E3 2017 dreams and reactions
Post by: dosboot on June 09, 2017, 01:00:26 AM
E3 is next week!  And some conferences are being streamed this Saturday and Sunday!   Crazy.

We should have a thread for E3 news and reactions.  How about we share some hopes/dreams in the meantime?

You can't have E3 without fun longshot pipedreams, and I will go all in on one this year: New Metroid.  For these things, you have to believe it is coming, and I'm feeling it for Metroid this year despite no evidence and some evidence to the contrary (e.g. we heard no mainline Metroid game was in development in 2015, when Federation Force interviews/reports were going on).

As for the "realistic" games that would be interesting to see: Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Evil Within 2, the new Star Wars IP, God of War, and Super Mario Odyssey.   I also know there are a number of studios such as Retro, From Soft and Mistwalker who are known to be working on new projects that I'd surely be excited to see.

~

Does anyone else agree that seeing trailers debut live on the big stage has the effect of creating hype that wouldn't be there?  Like, at a more sober time of the year I'd be fine letting a lot of these AAA trains coast by with far less attention.  Especially looking back at this past year, I know that I'm going to be playing on a tiny handful of "new" games, but I also know that if I hop on the E3 ride it will be a fun time.

Hopes and Dreams:
New Metroid that ignores the events of Other M.
Mario Oddyssey is to Mario as Breath of the Wild was to Zelda.
Dishonored 2 DLC (TBH it looks like Bethesda gave up on this franchise and I hope I'm wrong about this.)
Fallout: New New Orleans, or something.
TES 6, debuting a new Bethesda  engine that isn't shitty and buggy for once.
Beyond Good and Evil 2, but i highly doubt that game is actually still a thing, it's probably been canned for good.

I feel like Nintendo misses the mark with Metroid to their own detriment because of the concerns of marketing. I doubt I'm alone in this thought but I'll express my reasons here because I've had some rum.

Metroid is a sci-fi shooter and popular wisdom in marketing is to make it a multiplayer FPS competitive thing. This makes sense from that viewpoint but not much from Metroid's actual genre, which is lovecraftian horror except you shoot those horrors in the face. I feel like Prime 1 handled this best, the sense of solitude, the post apocalyptic and later timely logs of the Chozo on Samus's actions; it was a great narrative on the last warrior of the Chozo.

I also feel like Other M tried and failed to do this because it was simply the wrong point in the timeline. Like it absolutely makes sense to have Samus have PTSD triggered by Ridley suddenly showing up, but it is something that should be in her first few games, not later (I forget what sequence number Other M is.) Other M had other problems but I won't focus on them here. Also her having daddy issues is BS when for what we know she had loving Chozo guardians. I feel like the shift to human-centric things in Metroid is a big mistake.

I want a better writer for Metroid. Someone who can accurately write Samus as a woman out of place with humans, chozo, and metroids. Someone who can do so in a show-don't-tell manner with logs and scan data and a little bit of Samus's comments. I think if the proper focus on lonely hero was given to the series, Metroid could simultaneously be popular as a piece of art and a least common denominator "person struggling alone against great trials."  Surely the protagonist being the last beacon of justice in a universe gone mad is a good marketing ploy?

This year I continue to hold out hope for a Lunar 3.

I wonder what a lunar game would be like with better voice acting. I mean it wasn't awful like vay, but I definitely prefer modern voice acting in my rpgs.

I still have my sega cd though so I'm ready! =P

Other M is between Super and Fusion, which is the end of the overall timeline.

This is the first year in a long while that I'll actually be paying attention since I seem to have finally caught up to everything that I wanted to play. Wearing down my backlog over the course of uh... 27 years has helped and beating Breath of the Wild last night after almost exactly 100 hours of play has really hammered that home.

Haphazard predictions and stuff from a lazy person with clear biases:

Long shot stupid stuff:
Vagrant Story 2
Breath of Fire 6
Metroid anything
A pokemon remake despite there being a pokemon direct thing like 3 days ago.

  • From Software proves that they can't shake that they are the Dark Souls company. They either declare that their next game is an exclusive and are invaded by a zweihander spamming Havel mage or declare that it will be released on all console minus the Switch and will be invaded by a glitched Sacred Flame user on a dial-up connection. They are then counter-invaded by a blue spirit from the DS2 Faithful but the jankey covenant system and heavily nerfed magic they use means the blue spirit doesn't save the company spokesman on time.

Jokes aside, I hope they stick to what has been clearly working for them. Now that Dark Souls is Over?, I wonder if they're going to start fresh with a new game in the same genre, or just make Bloodborne 2 or something.

This year I continue to hold out hope for a Lunar 3.

To add: Lunar 3 made by people who had absolutely nothing to do with Dragon Song, since surely nobody else could screw it up so badly. Alternatively, another remake of Lunar 2 because seriously, why does only the first get to be cool and modern on the PSP.

What else, eh...a PS4 price cut? New Sony handheld? God forbid, an Ubisoft presentation that isn't pandering bullshit?

I do too. Even after 5 games I don't think there's a "perfect" or "definitive" version of what type of game the company makes. Each of them has a lot of strengths but a few flaws that taint the experience. The games are still great overall and I want From to continue their success. I just don't know if Miyazaki wants to do this forever and hope that whatever they do make features all the strengths they've taken from the Souls games and finishes it off with more polish.

As usual I'll stick around to see what the big three toss around this year while looking out for 3DS and PC releases.

New Sony handheld?
As much as I want to see that happen it seems that Sony isn't too keen on handhelds anymore after lackluster reception and sales of the Vita. It didn't reach the popularity of the PSP and paled in comparison to the 3DS despite its clear technological superiority over Nintendo's handheld.

Actually the Vita did pretty well in Japan and I think Europe? Just everywhere else it was pretty lackluster.

Boy, such nice lists and I've only got a few... two which are longshots/pipe dreams, probably.

Note that there is no sarcasm in this list, I'm completely freaking serious here:

Yup. :]

I think I have a few that aren't even likely enough to be longshots, they are merely "barely plausible fan fantasy":

From Software announces Lost Kingdoms 3.   Since the series was a Gamecube exclusive, the sequel probably would be for the Switch.  The new game would take the central idea of those games - that every monster is also an equipable weapon/ability card - and modernize it with an action RPG control scheme more in line with FromSoft's recent games.  Make it set in a dying/decaying world that only secretly turns out to be the world of Lost Kingdoms when you piece together the right lore items.

A Kirby game in the vein of Super Mario RPG, with timed hits and Square-Enix once again a co-developer.  Mix back in some of that SE weirdness they added so it isn't just like Paper Mario in tone.

A single player Quake game, but pitched as a proper sequel to Quake 1 and it's universe.  And where they go back to classic FPS movespeed and classic map design (disconnected levels, no checkpoints and less scripting).

Warcraft 4?  Maybe this one is just a regular longshot that could happen eventually.  I think you need to avoid adding another race, so it would stay at 4.  The Naga wouldn't replace any of the races, but maybe a couple Naga units can find their way into the new unit rosters for the other 4.  Same goes for the many other races in the Warcraft universe that aren't directly represented as one of the 4 main factions in WC3.  All campaigns would come in the base game.

EA briefly unveiled "Anthem", a new IP from Bioware (http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/06/10/e3-2017-bioware-reveals-new-project-anthem?abthid=593c578614efe0203600001e).  The trailer showed a Pacific Rim-esque setting?  Human mecha pilots, a giant wall keeping humanity safe from monsters such as a giant turtle.  Hard to say really what it is about, because it ended quickly with "full reveal at Microsoft conference".

What I want to see, even if it's highly unlikely:
-A Jazz Jackrabbit game with high-quality pixel art
-A Golden Sun game that's basically a remake of the first two games
-A new Metroid game that is actually Metroid and not a co-op shooter, and has a good story and world
-A new Star Fox game that has a more natural control scheme
-A new Gradius game that doesn't have Otomedius in the title

What I actually want to see:
-BethesDoom 2
-Platinum making another Transformers game
-Splatoon 2 and more games for the switch
-A good Xbone exclusive that I'm invested in
-A Ratchet and Clank 2016 sequel

...I think I have others I wanna see but I can't remember them atm. >3>

Something else that was pretty neat in EA's confrence: A Way Out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ApSmPvxz1o).  It's an "always splitscreen game", so you have to play co-op with either a couch partner or an online one.  The game is about escaping from a prison and then being on the run through the countryside.  It is being made by the team who made Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, with funding via EA's originals program.  Even though it's not really a game for me, it's an ambitious idea and I'm interested seeing where this idea goes.

Yeah, that was a pretty cool game they showed off. I never played the original Brothers game, so I may have to try it before doing this.

I also liked the Star Wars Battlefront 2 stuff, if it actually gets interesting I may pick it up.

speaking of golden sun, it just occurred to me that I find it really surprising that no other rpg games have really taken what golden sun did for their own games. I mean the whole mind read npcs thing. It really made the menial unimportant npc chatter in town so much more enjoyable and I wish more rpgs would implement it. Half the npcs in town if you have to. I'd rather have half as many interesting npcs than double uninteresting ones.

Yeah. The only other games I can think of that had similar aspects were Wild Arms 3 and Lufia 2 for the SNES. Even Persona 5 has a fair bit of jumping around and puzzle solving. I guess no one picked up on this puzzle solving gameplay because it drew out the dungeons too much? I dunno. I would love to see a game that brings these puzzles back, they help break up the dungeon crawling.

Kingdom Hearts 3 got a trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p51wHlWY1uM)!  The trailer uses the Japanese voice actors, but it shows off the game and you don't miss much.

Quoting gamespot (https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-kingdom-hearts-3-trailer-shows-combat-massive-/1100-6450733/)

But the most interesting part of this trailer is that it's not part of Sony or Microsoft's press conferences. Instead, Square Enix chose to run the spot during a Kingdom Hearts concert that took place on Saturday night. Since the next new bit of information isn't coming until D23, that means we likely won't see any more of the game at E3.

Microsoft had a very good conference, they almost exclusively just showed trailers and demos.  Scorpio is called "Xbox One X", which isn't a complete disaster for a name, and will cost $500.

They also announced at the end that they would be bringing original Xbox (!!) backward compatibility.  No specific list of games just yet though.  (Edit: other than Crimson Skies which was mentioned on stage)

In seriousness, what they showed off wasn't too bad. Not going to bite at that price tag, but it seems like they have a solid lineup and nothing awfully cringe-inducing happened. Anthem actually looks nice, as long as Bioware has learnt its lesson. Could have done with 75% less Minecraft tho.

At the very least, they created consistency with the name "Xbox One S".  It also establishes a naming upgrade path they can work with in the future, sort of like how graphics cards are named with silly numbers and letters at the end.  (I hope that won't be for a long time though.)

Assassin's Creed: Origins (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGn6gvXwGJE) was one of the more interesting titles for me in the Xbox press conference.  I haven't played AC at all, and this is the first one since the original where I've been this interested in doing so.  The combat also looked better than I expected, and I've been hearing people say it looks revamped compared to previous games although it'd be hard to say right now.

Anthem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_alSjWujdU) was also fully unveiled.  I dig the setting but wish it wasn't shaping up to be a Destiny-like.

Anyone here hyped for Cuphead?  It is finally coming out this fall, for real this year.  It seems like the kind of game that might be my speed but I'm not grabbed by the art style (scandalous!) or the glimpses we've periodically seen so I'm still waiting for a reason.

Yeah, I'm just being bitchy, Guilty Gear is fine. It's just always felt weird to me. I don't know if it's a little too slow or a little too heavy or something, but I can't ever quite manage to get it to click. And the character designs do lean toward "ass-ugly early-to-mid-00s overdesigned" for my taste, but I can certainly see why a lot of people like them.

Doom VFR (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYOasB6aI_A), a VR game based on Doom 2016, was revealed yesterday.  It appears to be a new side game (not a VR version of the 2016 campaign), and it is controled using teleportation and stationary shooting.

I've never been jazzed for VR (whether right now or down the road), but it does look kinda neat for a VR shooter.  The trailer makes the teleportation look more kinetic and dynamic.

What's the F stand for you might ask?  It is whichever "F" you care to use in "BFG". (https://segmentnext.com/2017/06/12/doom-vfr/)

Though I'm not really into any of their franchises, Ubisoft did really well this year. Compared to 2015's "pitch-a-meme" meme this was a complete 180 with nothing but game after game after game. Plus they all looked decently fun for those who might be interested in them. PC Gaming Show was a snoozefest as usual, but we all know the majority of PC games are shown at other E3 events (like Microsoft's) anyway :V

God forbid, an Ubisoft presentation that isn't pandering bullshit?

Fear me, for I am the oracle.

Seriously though, my discord friends were holding their breath through the whole Beyond Good and Evil 2 trailer. And the MarioXRabbids game looks like...not a trainwreck? Colour me surprised.

Mario X-Com looks surprisingly good. Surprised there's no Rayman game out, but eh. I dunno about AC: Origins but it might be pretty fun, we'll see.

And uh...Are we getting yet ANOTHER remaster of Shadow and the Colossus or is it an entirely new game?

Bethesda's conference was fucking pathetic.

I mean, the new Dishonored DLC looked cool, and Wolfenstein 2 is shaping up to be awesome, especially considering you can kill the KKK in it.

But, Paid Mods? Are you fucking kidding me Bethesda? Didn't you learn your lesson from the backlash last time?

And Jesus Christ give Skyrim a break already, it's 6 fucking years old now, no one cares about it anymore. Just give us a tease for TES 6 or something. Not the same old shit.

They should've just focused mainly on The Evil Within 2, Dishonored: DOTO, and Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. Save that other bullshit for the last 10 minutes or something. Not drag it out like they did here.

All in all, a pretty disappointing conference compared to the one Bethesda had last year...which was disappointing compared to their 2015 showing! I guess it's always a downward slope when Bethesdas concerned.

Also: Anthem. Seriously Bioware, you cut down on your resources for Mass Effect for THIS? A shameless Destiny clone? Lame.

I'm so hype for Metroid yessss.

My dream wish was that it would be announced with a full unveiling, but this early in the console's life I won't fault them for wanting to get the news out there now instead of next year.

It's also "Prime 4", not just "New Metroid".  I seriously hope this subtitle will turn out to be meaningless, or just less meaningful than before.  Metroid needs new storylines!  I don't want it to be so dang similar to the previous 3 Prime games.

Retro Studios wasn't mentioned yet as the developer.  I'm actually hype for the speculation that they aren't working on Prime 4 (see above).  Deploy Retro to bring us something else incredible!

Meanwhile I bought my Switch for Splatoon 2 and Nintendo is giving me plenty of other stuff to do with it so it isn't another Wii U situation where it ends up as a Splatoon machine and nothing else.

Incidentally and outside of the scope of this thread though I HATE how the Switch controller feels. I've had to dial back my recent Thumper obsession because the tiny little buttons are cutting into my right thumb...

Forza 7's got my interest, mainly due to releasing all content for PC unlike 6 (which would've had my money instantly if they brought the NASCAR Expansion to PC before I realized Gran Turismo 6 already let me put stock cars in places they do not belong). The Crew 2 looks actually happy and peppy and bright unlike its grimdark predecessor, and between that and Super Mario Odyssey wowing me, I'm very glad that vibrant, gleeful games are, like, a thing that's allowed again. We need more of those. Wolfenstein II looks completely fantastic, even if I'm a bit apprehensive still; not a pre-order, but an early buy if reviews are good. The Spider-Man game looks fantastic.

Essentially, as someone with no intentions of buying a console in the near future, this time around really just gave me a vibe that, well, I suppose is a good thing; each game had a very specific audience it was going for, and if you were in that, it was exciting. If you weren't, you just waited for the next thing. It kinda showed a divide of sorts, but on the other side of the coin, it gave everyone something to be thrilled about, or at minimum, intrigued by.

I'm a little surprised that Sonic Forces, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 / Dimensions / Worlds, and Gran Turismo Sport (I am very conflicted about GT's direction but that is a whole other story) got no mainline screen time, but it made it feel like extra special finds when it's like "oh, so there WAS a trailer for that!".
Title: Re: E3 2017 dreams and reactions

My fave racing game to date is still forza 3 (I never played 4+ yet, I heard 4 is really not worth getting if you already have 3, and I don't have an xbone so that's it).

So I would love to play it on my pc, but I'm going to assume it'll be like 6 where you can only play it using windows 10, which I'm not using. That said my rig is 6 years old, so when I try to upgrade next, I might find I need a complete overhaul, and then I'll likely get it.

Speaking of 6 though, my biggest gripe with 3 that I asked and was told 4 didn't fix were ghost car mechanics. I just love picking a car, practicing a race, saving the ghost car, and racing against that ghost car with a DIFFERENT car. but Forza didn't let you do that with a different car (or was it a different tier of car? I forget, you couldn't do it with any other car you wanted though). That was something I liked about Gran tourismo more at the time, you could nail a race with your old car, buy a fancy new one, and literally watch how much better your new one performs in comparison, makes the whole buy a new car experience a lot more fun and meaningful to me. Which is a shame because GT's problem was that they toss 20 cars a second at you for breathing.
Title: Re: E3 2017 dreams and reactions
Post by: Pywackett-Barchetta on June 14, 2017, 02:37:09 PM
I played 4 and wasn't really impressed; Horizon was a bit more up my alley, but having played way, way too many racing games, Forza 4 was just kind of unsatisfactorily floaty. And, actually, having played Gran Turismo 6, it felt like Forza was throwing cars at me more often than GT was (awarding new cars on each "level up" instead of each championship, meaning you could end up with three new rides before a series was even over), even when it was the express purpose of much of GT.

Gran Turismo's apparently throwing out the car collection in favor of e-sports and heavy simulation this time around. The sim-racing market already offers plenty of options, though. There are many, many great sim-racers, but nobody does Gran Turismo like Gran Turismo, and apparently even they won't, now. Their E3 trailer showing them scoffing at the old games and boasting about "burn[ing] it all down, start from scratch", combined with buying out the exclusive license to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb so no other series can use it, is making me very much less than happy with Polyphony Digital. It's a bold move, but also feeling like a really dumb one, because there are a lot of other similar simulation options that look better so far.

I dunno if the ghost cars got fixed later, actually! That sounds like something worth trying out sometime. Gran Turismo 6 did allow for it as far as I know, but I hadn't really mixed and matched performance tiers of car. And yeah, F7 seems to be on the way for Windows 10 specifically. I eagerly await a demo, at least, to see if the physics feel right, and to hear if the car/track roster is appealing. (At this point, games lose points from me for having Silverstone and the N?rburgring because I'm just tired of doing them.)

I'm very on board with Forza 7 PC.  As much as I adored the first four Gran Turismo games, the series has gone in a direction I can't really follow.  I still love you for fueling my obsession with cars, Yamauchi!

Friendly reminder that the West is getting both Yakuza Kiwami (the Yakuza 1 remake) and Yakuza 6.  If you're not familiar with the series, Kiwami (or Yakuza 0 which released earlier this year) is a great starting point, and comes out this summer - MSRP $30.

Also, Ys VIII comes out in September!  By all accounts this is one of the best games in the series, so keep an eye out.

Ys VIII...Isn't that Lacrimosa of Dana?  I thought that was out already.  Given my addiction to hating myself and Nightmare-ing it up in every Ys I've played so far I look forward to more reasons to tear my hair out as Adol(or whoever the protagonist ends up as if it's somehow different a la Origin) gets pasted to the floor.
Title: Re: E3 2017 dreams and reactions

Well, uh, Forza 7's pre-order editions have been announced (https://forzamotorsport.net/en-us/news/fm7_preorder), and that's enough to remind me why I don't actually buy those games anymore. The VIP/Car/Season Passes never actually include all of the game's content, forcing you to still pay up even more later on. FH3's Ultimate Edition didn't - and doesn't - even include the map expansions, leaving that game's final price tag at about $135. Now we're starting at $100 again, purely for in-game content, and it's only going to increase from there. So, uh... I'm gonna stick to old stuff with free mods, because I am cheap.

(To be fair, the first Forza Horizon's content added up to $110 and felt completely worth it, but you weren't at all pressured into it all at once, nor was the in-game advertising quite as intrusive as it is today.)

The first Project CARS was not a very enjoyable product, but I find myself unexpectedly very hopeful for its sequel this time around, I should also note. I highly doubt we'll end up with no racing games worth the money out of this plentiful batch, in any case.

Yes it is, but they were weird and they released it on vita only, not ps4. They want th e ps4 version to actually have more content, with much of it focusing on that dana lady than adol since I heard it's like 80/20 adol/dana. So the ps4 version is taking longer to develop.

That said I don't think the west has either the vita or ps4 version yet, and we'll be getting the ps4 and... a PC version IIRC soonish.

I think I'd blocked the price from my memory cuz seriously? You could build a half-decent PC for that price and have enough left over to buy better games :V Looking at what the $800 version contains, I still can't tell what's making up the bulk of the price. The figure better be 1/2 scale or something ridiculous if you're going to drop a month's rent on this kind of crap.

Shame, since Ubi was doing so well. Not as insulting as Bethesda, though.

A roundup of E3 trailers that I found interesting but which were for small sized games that weren't heavily featured:

Tunic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drZBxGFZglU) - appears to be an isometric Zelda-like with a cute fox character (check out his run cycle).  Combat involves rolling and lock-on.

Extinction (trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUfssJjtKB4), gameplay demo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBJw7I-CrXQ)).  3d action game where you fight against giant Orcs (colossus-sized).  A first glance at the game will probably remind people of Attack on Titan.  Character has a lot of vertical mobility, air dashing, auto wall climbing.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gI93jQUDuw).  2d action/brawler in a stylized, historical japanese setting with a fairly artistic look to it.  The combination makes me think of a Vanillaware game if it was done with 3d models.  Looks like it has some Harvest Moon in it as well.

Finally, one last thing: Luigi's special technique in Mario+Rabbids is "Steely Stare" (found by catching a glimpse of the stat screen during a demo).
