Title: Post EVO Hype - Fighting Game General
Post by: Shimatora on September 04, 2013, 05:42:45 PM
Fighters of the Kaleidoscope 2 has been concluded! Here are the results!:

Melty Blood:

Divekick:

Sapz won SamSho which was actually Soku/Eternal Fighter Zero/E's Laf and very little SamSho.

Brackets:

Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code (Round Robin) (http://challonge.com/fotkmbaacc2)
Melty Blood Top 4 (Double Elim) (http://challonge.com/5n0efnho)
Divekick [PC] (http://challonge.com/fotkdivekick)
Samurai Shodown V Special (http://challonge.com/fotksamsho)

Well, I think it's been a long time coming for something like this, especially since I made the Touhou FTG thread. The channel I made for that thread has been expanding its games ever since then and I'd like to see if there's any other people here who have interest in playing with us! The channel can be found here (http://webchat.ppirc.net/?channels=sokumaidens) if anyone's interested in discussion and matchmaking for any FTG. The more the merrier!

If there's enough interest here, I might go the same way I did with the Touhou FTG thread and host some tournaments! As of now, the games we play outside of Touhou are:

and this list can only grow!

So, to start things off, what games do you all play? Who do you main? Which is the game you play the most?

Melty Blood: Probably the game I play the most right now. H-Vakiha for life. H-Roa when I feel like trying to troll people. :V Everyone loves a bit of SOKO DAROU.
KoF13: K', Kyo, Terry. Still pretty much a beginner at this one, but it's so good. Trying to learn it at the local arcade on Fridays, fun times.
SSF4: I don't really play much anymore, but Guy since he's obviously the coolest character in the game with those sneakers.

Persona 4 Arena. Possibly/probably the best fighting game of the last console generation, finally got time to play so I've been doing it a lot. Learning Naoto for some stupid reason, and Naoto is hilarious.

Blazblue. Very, very rusty, but played a few games in the last month or so. Lambda's my girl, kind of pissed she got semi-removed for the sequel.

Melty Blood. Not one of my favorites, but I do play it from time to time. Pretty much only local games with a specific couple of people. None of us really know what we're doing or have any interest in seriously learning, so we can get a lot of enjoyment out of selecting random characters and being confused.

Needs more Skullgirls, GGX2^AC+'s online version, and BB:CSE. :V

That being said I've been pretty out of shape with fighters for some time now - still can pull my own in GGX2^AC+ and some KOF, but that's about it. Skullgirls' and (soon) KOF XIII's PC ports should get me back to fighting condition, though it wasn't terribly remarkable to begin with. :V

Personally, I've been playing an awful lot of Melty Blood where I main F-Nanaya but play a whole host of other characters. (aka everyone.)

Needs more Skullgirls, GGX2^AC+'s online version, and BB:CSE. :V

I've been looking into the Guilty Gear series, played a bit of it at Heart of Gaming a few weeks back. Seems fun!

Playing seriously: Skullgirls, KoF 13

Playing casually: Melty Blood AACC, Melty Blood AC Ver. B., Guilty Geat XXRelaod (that is, when I get around to actually installing and playing it.)

My games of choice right now are definately KoF 13 and Skullgirls, along with MMAACC to a lesser extent; I fell off the fighting game wagon for a good while after last year's Final Round, as Melty seemed to just flat out drop off the Earth after that and Street Fighter IV was not holding my interest, but I'm back now. I've played fighters on and off throughout my life, but only learning to play one seriously with MMAACC in late 2011. As a result, I'm not the most skilled player and in dire need of practice.

This sums up my reaction to Akatsuki being in UNIB -and for that matter, UNIB in general- quite nicely. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2-pHvqq_BQ)

Anyone here liked Primal Rage? To the point of memorizing all the characters moves and being able to pull them all and the fatalities on both the arcade and snes versions? To the point of planning on buying the game cabinet one day?

No? Just me?

ok

Seriously, though, I miss games that had really monstrous characters to play as. Like Xenophage. Ah, that game was so horrible, but the aliens were so cool!
The only ones nowadays that have them are the Godzilla ones and War of the Monsters and the upcoming Colossal Kaiju Combat,, which are tons of fun, but I kinda wanted one with more, hm, classic gameplay.
There's always MUGEN, I guess.

At any rate, I'm currentely playing Skullgirls and TH 13;5. mostly. Only casually, as I have no interest in competitive playing of any kind.

Play the current versions of Persona 4: Arena, BlazBlue, and Guilty Gear, though I've been out of practice for a while (for fighters in general--waiting on the sequels/updates).

I also played the current Melty Blood, but never beyond theory fighter and CPU curbstomping since I had no opponents (thus I'm easy pickings). I wouldn't mind having matches in any of these games though.

Oh, and I do play KoF casually, but I mean casually. I'm probably better at Melty Blood even.

Melty Blood: F-Hime main, H-Sion submain
SSF4AE: Evil Ryu
Mahvel: Vergil, Wesker, Hawkeye
Blazblue: Platinum the Trinity
P4A: Elizabeth (just a little, I don't own the game but I did play it in one of my friends' house. )

Planning to main Vatista or Orie on UNIB because they so cool.

EDIT: Or Hilda.

Lacking pratice recently, but mostly because i'm unable to play some of them.
It's one of my fave genre by the way.,
So...
I had the fortune to play Blazblue, and Guilty Gear, and since then they're the ones that i appreciate most.
Other titles that i particularly like are KoF(Orochi saga and 2004) Tekken, Soul Calibur 3
Melty Blood and Fate:UC are other titles i had a great time with.
But right only Soku is the one i'm playing seriously.

Skullgirls: Solosquiggles
Melty: CNanaya/FAoko

Used to play a little Marvel with Dante/Amaterasu/Wright, and I stream monster like everything else so I'm decently knowledgeable. Skullgirls is really the first game I've had the balls to play seriously.

Eh, I'll post what characters I play in the games I have played

UMvC3: Wolvie/Frank West/Dante
SSFIV:AE 2012: Yun
Melty Blood AACC: C-Ciel
Divekick: No mains yet, but maybe sticking to either Kick or Wolverine Redacted.

I gotta get back into MBAACC. It's fun, but I only played with Suikama last year a bit when he showed me the game and all.

I pretty much dabble in every "anime" fighter (I dunno take that how you will) but haven't really ever gotten the guts to play anything seriously. I'd really like to start trying though I'm not sure how to go about it...

I don't have much on PC though so as much fun as it'd be to expand my base of people to play with it would only be with games that aren't on my list of stuff I want to be serious about. Might it be possible to do like a PSN of Xbox whatever it is called list or is that not a thing we do here?

It's optional. You can see them in the bottom right corner of a post if someone has it listed, though it'd be nice if more got listed! I'll start adding people on steam/PSN if people don't mind. I'll hold off on adding people on Skype until matches are actually set up.

Arcana Heart 3 Love Max confirmed for console port. (http://n4g.com/news/1355293/arcana-heart-3-love-max-confirmed-for-consoles)

Anyways, my mains games that I play the most (games that I regularly play in tournaments) are:
Blazblue - every character
Guilty Gear - Millia
Melty - Ryougi
Arcana Heart - Akane, Heart

Games that I play on the side:
Persona 4 Arena - Akihiko
IaMP - Marisa
Vanguard Princess - Saki

Games that I used to play but now hate dislike:
Mahvel
Skullgirls
Divekick

favorites:
Aquapazza: Touka (can play okay-ish with anyone save for Chizuru, Karulau and Arawn)
Arcana Heart 3: Fiona, Heart
IaMP: anyone except Yukari

others:
3s: Elena
Chaos Code: Bravo, Catherine (want to learn Cthylla and Celia Kai)
Garou MotW: Hotaru, Gato
GGXXAC+R: Kliff
KoF 2k2: Ralf/Clark/Ryo (alts: Leona, ura Chris)
MBAACC 1.07: C-Aoko
P4A: (dial-A) Chie
SFA2: almost anyone
Soku: Suika (alts: almost anyone; forgot the characters I tend to feel un-fluent with, save for Suwako)
ST: probably anyone except gief and T.Hawk because I use a keyboard and don't use 720's on it

going to get the japanese BBCP once it hits the PSN and try to learn Kokonoe, Terumi, Amane and Bullet (if her lock-on is anything like Arcana Heart's homing feature). Maybe (with enough spare money) I'll get Shin Koihime Musou, if I like the gameplay and system/character mechanics.

Honestly, there's only one fighting game I play sort of regularly nowadays. And it's...

Melty - Still my favourite fighting game due to its easy controls and because it's Type-Moon related. I'm pretty casual about it though, since even after a year I still haven't decided my main. When I played against dots-meido people like Amra, I picked H-Ries most of the time, though. She's a scrub-friendly rushdown character IMO.

My other favourites to use are H-Warc (some Rugal moves and Warc's ability to do ez combos), F-Ryougi (HELP I CAN'T STOP SCREWING UP MY 236A/B REKKA INTO 623A/B PARRY WHILE COMBOING), F-Nanaya (you should know why), and F-Miyako (loli elbow). I guess I'd like to be good at F-Kouma, but one does not simply become a dunkmaster in one night.

I really should try playing more real fighting games. Like something from SNK. I know I've played Garou: MotW before. But dear lord are real fighting games an effort to learn to play!

Anybody see that new gameplay trailer for Persona 4 Arena 2 (and is there a more elegant thing to call it yet?)? Yukari and Junpei both look awesome. And who is that new guy? Is he from Persona 2 or something? New character entirely? And did I correctly interpret that it's coming out in arcades before the end of the year? QUESTIONS?

For a game that was announced so recently it seems to be much further along than I was expecting. I've been playing a lot (for me, which means a couple of hours a week) of Arena, so I'm pretty excited about this.

Smash ball makes Mewtwo MEGA MEWTWO

I can see this happening now.

Edit: Mega-Mewtwo will be determined by which console version you get as well. 3DS gets X, and Wii U gets Y :V

Also watching the Sonic trailer again, his moveset seems to be exactly the same as in Brawl

which is to say he'll probably be low tier again :derp:

I felt like Cross and its patches helped (and the Meta world mechanics are interesting), but yeah, there's still plenty of derpy things in there ("D-did I just go through you?"). Still, as long as I can repeatedly sentence people to death with Dlanor, I can't say I'm too disappointed in it.

I use a Qanba Q4 that I love. It comes with a square gate out of the box which is kind of a mess, but swapping it for an octagonal one isn't difficult. It was relatively cheap and is compatible with 360, PS3, and PC, so I can use it for basically any modern game. It's my first stick and I haven't used too many others, but of the ones I do have experience with I like the weight and spacing of this one the best.

Edit: I should say though that I have a lot of trouble playing six button fighters with it. 95% of the games I play are four buttons, but on the occasion that I do play a Street Fighter 2 the layout is pretty awkward. So if you're a big Capcom fan it might not be for you. I know some people have no problem playing six button games on these, but I think it's really uncomfortable.

If you're lazy, a Mad Catz TE stick is a good buy. They're very mod-friendly, and you can replace the buttons without any soldering. If you're looking for something cheaper, there are some pretty good Hori sticks out there. Though the lower-price ones usually need  soldering if you want to replace some parts.

mine is a HRAP (Hori Real Arcade Pro) V3, it can come in a variety of themes (UMvC3, no-theme, AH3, AP, etc.), mine in particular is the one that's AH3 themed ( http://i53.tinypic.com/10mpjkx.jpg -- got this image from google, this isn't actually my photo but gives a good view of the stick ). it's not a dual controller, though, but it will run fine on PC as well (you can play Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code on the PC with it, unlike MadCatz TE's). This other video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i2yEK9zURQ) features the 360 version, which should be the same, except for the colored buttons and the frontal ear phone plug.

The buttons and stick are Sanwa (don't know what's the restrictor used -- square or octogonal); the weight of the stick is nice, for keeping the stick in place while playing. As shown in the video, the stick has a compartment for the usb cable (which also has a plastic cover); My complaint, though, is that the artwork isn't shielded, so it can wear off in places where the fingers touch more frequently.

Injustice Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition will be coming to PS4, PS Vita, and the PC on Nov. 12th in the US, Nov. 29th in Europe and elsewhere.
IGMU-UE is Injustice with all the DLC bundled with it.

The intel: https://www.injustice.com/en/news/injustice-gods-among-us-ultimate-edition-coming-november-12th

No word if the PC version is on Steam.  Also curious the WiiU logo is on the bottom, but no word on a version coming out for that console.

I took my arcade stick apart to clean it earlier and noticed that the faceplate art was weirdly discolored in a small part of the bottom edge. I didn't notice that until just now, so at this point I'm assuming I must've set it in something when I removed it or something. Anyway, I'm going to Photoshop up some new art for it while I need to have it reprinted anyway, and I'm trying to figure out how to turn a Touhou screencap into something I can stick on the front of my stick. In the process of re-downloading a free Photoshop trial now since I'm too cheap to pay for it, and assuming that just blowing it up that large will look terrible. This could be tricky/impossible, but I think it will be super cool if I can figure something out.

good luck, I wish I could help you but I lack the skills to mod arcade sticks :/

in other news, Aquapazza: Aquaplus Dream Match is going to be released in USA in November 19th, published by Atlus; they've recently uploaded a trailer (http://www.siliconera.com/2013/10/10/aquapazza-trailer-highlights-crossover-fighters-utawarerumono-characters/) (presumably one of them).

For those who don't know Aquapazza, it's a fighting game (duh :V) developed by Examu, featuring Aquaplus characters, which was originally developed for japanese arcades and later received a PS3 port for Japan; though it wasn't region locked, importing it was expensive back then (it will be released for somewhere around $30), and there *was* no expectancy for it to get a US localization, since the game features quite a lot of different series (Utawarerumono, Tears to Tiara, White Album, Comic Party, To Heart, Kizuato, Routes.. don't remember the rest). It was a surprise to me and other fans of the game, that it's actually (and finally) going to be available for the US region (more importantly, for a more affordable price).

What I did for the artwork on my sticks was I printed them at a FedEx office and lami-labeled them for pretty cheap. For the artwork itself, there are plenty of helpful templates out there like here (http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/137307/the-new-official-arcade-stick-art-thread-no-image-quoting) and here (http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/137307/the-new-official-arcade-stick-art-thread-no-image-quoting). Getting the artwork onto the stick is pretty simple, just slap it on there and trim it out with an exacto-knife or something similar.

That's exactly what I did the first time, and now there's even a Fedex twenty feet from my apartment. Just trying some stuff out for new art. Nothing involving Touhou screencaps really looks any good yet. The best I can figure right now is to take a bunch of Imperishable Night Extra spells and tile them together with Mokou's silhouette over them or something, but it ends up looking too busy. Maybe her silhouette and Kaguya's over one of the menu or credits backgrounds, but they're really too low-res to work with.

Does anyone use fight sticks here?  If so, which fight sticks would you recommend?

I have a Hori V3-SA, and a Qanba Q4REF. Both are equipped with the default Sanwa JLF with square gate, though the Qanba's uses an LS-32 and LS-55 spring to increase tightness; blasted things are way too loose and imprecise otherwise. My Qanba's recently been acting funny (Phantom inputs, response stopping completely, etc. Its to the point that only a computer restart puts it back to normal), so I'm switching back to the V3-SA.

Due to my Qanba possibly breaking down, and me recently finding out that Qanba/EightArcs have a somewhat high failure rate across the board (sticks dying completely after a year- usually mid-match, mid-tournament), I can't really recommend them unfortunately. I'm gonna grab an LS-32 for my Hori in the near future (modding to fit my needs of course). No opinion on Madcatz, but the Hori has served me well in Melty, Street Fighter and now KoF. The quick release wires and universal mounting plate make it much more pleasant to work with than the Qanba. Only complaints is thats its too light at 4.9 (iirc) pounds, and being the older model version (read: not the more recent KAI edition), the bottom plate is nothing but cold, heartless metal. Very bad if you're playing bare-legged at home. Nothing a few wooden blocks, some felt and some glue can't fix though.

here is a short blurb of a convo i had with someone on this.

09:18:18  tenryuu: vanguard princess got greenlit for steam? OK then.
09:18:38  Ranmilia: don't buy it
09:19:19  Ranmilia: the english version is super sketchy, DRM'd up and crippled
09:19:39  tenryuu: so the english version took a fighting game that was not very great to begin with, and somehow made it worse.
09:19:47  tenryuu: i can't say i'm entirely surprised by this

...also some sprites got censored. because the one thing you should do for a waifu fighter, is to censor revealing sprites. you so smart.

I played Brawl minus max today with my friend. It is so awesome
I was doing great with Bowser since they replaced his fire breath with the royal rampage. Bowser walks forward with super armour and then when he get close enough, Bowser grabs them and you get access to 4 new throw moves. In the air though, he does a spin like Zangief's Siberian blizzard from SF4. If he grabs the opponent, Bowser tosses them up and does a suplex. The move is called the Galactic Crusher.

Other then that, I have been adding a lot of touhou textures to Brawl. Soon, I will be able to have free-for-all matches in Brawl with touhou characters on a touhou stage. :V

Undizzy limit (effectively combo length until the enemy can green burst) has now been lowered pretty drastically in Skullgirls. Your combos are shorter. Will update with my new bnb for squigly.

how the hell do you do Big Band's Jojo super

Gotta taunt first.

Really? Did they change damage at all?

Not really. But combos are about 2/3 length now. All my bnbs are one chain shorter about, now, and the enders are abbreviated as well.

squigly bnbs:

cLK cMK sHK jc jMK jHP land jc jLK jMK jHK j236MK cLK cMK cHK j236MK jc jLP jMK jHK j236HK 236LK/MK 214MK (charge and release) throw
-generic combo with the jHP land link. You want to charge the silver chord immediately after Battle opera, and release upon the last hit of Opera. Takes some judgement.

cLK cMK sHP-HP seriacancel cLK cMK cHK jc jMK jHP land jc jLK jMK jHK j236MK cLK cMK cHK j236HK 214LK/MK 236MK (charge and release) throw
-same as above but omits one air chain in exchange for a seria cancel ground chain. Slightly more damage and meter gain.
-the above two combos can instead replace the throw ender for 214LK/LP, ie throw super, for more damage and better oki. Lead to Squigly's dive kick undizzy bait reset, which I linked somewhere.

cLK cMK sHK jc jMK jHP land jc jLK jMK jHK j236MK cLK cMK cHK j236MK jc jLP jMK jHK j236HK 214(anytwopunches)
-if you really need to burn meter. Follow up while they're in hit stun with jHP for the most obvious burst bait ever.

anywhere you see j236MK, replace with (j236LK throw 214LK/MK) for Squigly's standard dive kick reset. Can sorta be reacted to depending on whether or not the opponent is listening for the different hits sounds dive kick makes.
anywhere you see sHK, omit what follows and instead do (jc pause airthrow j236a follow up) for her air throw reset. Weaker than her dive kick reset but less expected.

dive kick reset combos following battle opera
charged 236MK cLK cMK sHP-HP seriacancel cLK cMK cHK
-with how slowly the undizzy drains, you will not have much combo length to work with. This is generally the most you can get.

charged 236MK cMK sHP-HP 236LP
-the one inch punch only combos if charged. Gives distance and time to charge stance of choice. A charged 236LK (arpeggio) gives even more time. If your opponents undizzy is still near full go for this.

charged 236MK throw
-Not the most damage but if you're really full on undizzy.

charged 236MK throwsuper
-When you really need more damage.

may update later.

Right now, I'm just sitting on a couch in my living room. I have Skullgirls on the T.V. and I have Blazblue:Continuum Shift Extend right next to me on my PSVita.
Unfortunately, I don't have Squiggly or Big Band but the console patch is supposed to be coming soon. In Skullgirls I am going to be practicing with the characters I don't really play.( Painwheel, Double, and Parasoul)
I actually am probably going to be on Blazblue online for most of the day, so if you want to fight against me, just send me an invite. Meanwhile, I will probably be in Training mode practicing my Iron Tager.

Pfft. Sad but true when it comes to a lot of users here.  I play Tekken non-competitively, usually using the Jacks, though I like to use the other robot/cyborg characters too.
I quite enjoy the huge amount, but comparatively simple input-wise, move lists that each character has in the Tekken series.
That being said, I also enjoy the gameplay, animation, and humor in Skullgirls, despite the fact the art style would generally keep me away.

Some games I want to see are UMvC3, Skullgirls, Injustice, and Soulcalibur V. I am up for anything though, just give me advance notice so I can practice.

Alright! I return with a few dates in mind. Either the last weekend of this month, so the 25th and 26th, or the first of February, the 1st and 2nd. Either works! Just let me know if anyone can't make it to either of those weekends or can only attend one day. I'd rather not cut participation if possible.

On the other hand, anyone got any ideas for a witty tournament name? Sapz and myself brainstormed a bit and only really came up with MotK's Fight Night. If anyone has any good ideas, let me know. :P

Sign-ups will be up within a weeks time.

Brackets are being made right this second. Before I post them, should I be aware of any connectivity issues with some games? Mainly looking at EU to US for games like Skullgirls, Marvel, etc. Let me know! If there is, I'll make an NA and EU bracket. If there's not enough to host either, we can just put them together if everyone can tolerate a bit of lag.

Also, unless there is huge demand for it I will only be hosting tournaments for the PC versions of the games. If there's enough people to justify it, I'll expand to Xbox360 too.

I'll be hosting anything people want me to, but obviously only the games with adequate players will be played. Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code and Skullgirls are almost definitely going to be played, I think. Can't speak for Shimatora directly but from his past tournaments it's probably safe to say no restrictions on character switching, best 2 out of 3 (except finals which may be 3 out of 5, probably not relevant if we're doing round robin), and we generally discuss things in #sokumaidens on PPIRC which is basically fighting game general at this point. Don't hold me to these, it's just guessing from past experiences. :V

Looking forward to momiji looping it up, as always.

Sapz got it 100% right! We meet in #sokumaidens on PPIRC an hour or so before tournament start at the latest to test connections, then from there get things started. For MBAACC, you need to be on Version 1.4 and have cccaster2.0d (http://www.mediafire.com/download/pxgd7eai89id2j7/cccaster.v2.0d.zip).

As for Skullgirls whatever is the most recent version on Steam will be the version we play. I don't think there is a caster for it yet, if it even needs one, so we'll just be using the built in netplay.

Any other questions, let me know either here, via PMs or on IRC. :D

EDIT: Updated the OP to reflect what I've said.

EDIT EDIT: This tournament is in no way restricted to MotK members! Feel free to advertise it in other communities or with friends, the more the merrier.

Okay! Times are finalised.

Sunday the 2nd of February:
14:00UTC - Melty Blood
19:00UTC - Skullgirls

Be sure to spread the word and let everyone know. Please turn up earlier than the times noted! If you turn up late, you might be removed from the tournament!

Sign-ups will be open until I start the tournament.

NOTE FOR SKULLGIRLS:

Seeing as I know none of the players or how to seed them, I will open up with a RR tournament and END with either a Double Elimination tournament, using the RR results for seeds. Should be fun!

Though I do want to ask: How many of you are going to pick up/have BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma? I tried to convince my friend to play Melty Blood again and failed, but he still plays BB. I'd love to have some groups when the game is out in NA.

I coulda totally maybe gotten a win against the Fortune dude, I've noticed he does nothing but blockstrings into rekka. But I panicked and started making stupid mistakes.
Title: Re: A Challenger Appears - Fighting Game General

Notes on everyone who played:
Fightest: Dropped Valentine for the tourney. Ran Filia/Double. Considering the usefulness of Silver Chord assist, which is little, the first match was effectively a mirror until Squigly came in. Not comfortable with that so I swapped Squigly to point, which was much more effective.

Stuffman: Dropped Double for the tourney. Ran solopara. Fightest noted this but Stuffman did a bit of autopilot neutral, with two Napalm Shots into jHP. Not much else to say.

tooEZ: Uuuugh, really laggy connection. Would just freeze up randomly, which is wonderful when it's Bella/Val. Took the first round convincingly but lost the second to really bad times to freeze; has a tendency to launch into air command grab and punishes techs reliably. Annoying. Forfeited the third match because fuck that connection.

G0nard: Solo Fortune. Simple enough. What solo fortune's want to do is get the head out as soon as possible. His blockstrings were really simple, just long. Solo fortune mixups are limited mostly to rekka high/low; punishing the rekka high with Daisy Pusher was fun. Squigly's air neutral game is strong vs solo Fortune if you keep the head in mind.

DuSouto: tooEZ's brother apparently, which meant a shared a connection. Fun times. But no Bella, so I'll stick with it. Fortune/Filia. He actually swapped out Filia from hairball to Updo assist because he was annoyed at my Squigly air game, apparently. Lost the second round to lag, or rather lost any chance of coming back in the second round to lag, but fuck it won the third one convincingly. Squigly's level 3 scares 90% of people into just holding downback, which is wonderful considering Squigly's throw game.

notes for self: My double is still weak and I need to work on her. I need to do other things with Filia in neutral besides IAD. Squigly performance was satisfactory. I need better oki. No chance to practice snapback combos either.

in case anyone wants to rib off my new squigly combo:
cLK cMK sHK jMK jHP land jLK jMK jHK j236MK cLK cMK sHK jLP jMK jHK j236HK > backdash cHP (ends in undizzy burst bait, silver chord after for ez punish)

cLK cMK sHP>HP seriacancel cLK cMK sHP>HP seriacancel cMP sHP>HP seriacancel sLP cHK jMK jHP land jLK jMK jHK j236HK (same result as above, more damage because seriacancels)

anytime you launch someone, you can substitute in a reset by waiting a few frames and grabbing them midair. Cancel into j236LK for combo pickup. Anytime you seriacancel you can instead pause for about three frames(??) and grab, but this is unsafe and shouldn't be spammed. Canceling any light normal into a seriacancel>grab is much tighter and can be done as fast as possible.

Thanks for hosting the tourney Shima! I'll try to have my stream stuff setup if we do this again. And seriously people, if you sign up, show up. Or at least tell us prior you're not attending so that we don't wait.

Me, probably. I'll have to buy a PS3 first, but I'll need it eventually for Persona 5 anyway, so I'll pick it up on release if I can budget it the new console before then. I guess if it comes down to it I can sell my 360 and its games at the last minute.

Not comfortable with that so I swapped Squigly to point, which was much more effective.

You're still a jerk.

I need to do other things with Filia in neutral besides IAD.

Filia might have clicked for me finally after a bunch of people gave me pointers, and she very, very desperately needs assists to open up the opponent. Going in with IAD is often recipe for a bad trade with anyone who outpokes Filia, and that's basically everyone.

Squig's spacing is just superior, and its much easier to charge seria with more people alive. My Squigly play is also mostly meter independent so there's no point not having Squigly on point.

Nice to see some BB players. Perhaps we could set up a tournament a few days after the NA release? I'll definitely want at least a day or two to brush up on the new Hakumen.

Still a fair bit away though. Damn waiting. Had I the extra cash, I might have picked up the original JP release, but what can you do.

I just had somebody who doesn't own a PS3 but intends to buy one later this year offer me the special edition copy he pre-ordered until he gets a console, so that makes the expense of buying the system a little lighter given that I won't need to get the game for a while. I've been trying to get back in practice, but it's hard to make the time. I managed like twenty minutes of play in the last two weeks. :derp:

I'm out for a while and missed the MBAACC tourney :(

anyways, besides MBAACC and IaMP/Soku, I'd like to join tournaments for

- Aquapazza: Aquaplus Dream Match (PS3)
- Arcana Heart 3 (PS3)
- Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R (PS3)
- BlazBlue ChronoPhantasma (PS3)

however, GG and especially AP don't seem to be netplayable across countries, unless you guys want to try anyways.

My blood has been so melty this last week. I played about 300 games against Rou with my H-Vakiha against his C-Kouma over the last... 5 days? It's about even, but it's really interesting how the mindgames continue to evolve and extra layers of yomi show up over time (as well as general improvements in play of course). It's a pretty interesting matchup aside from that, with H-Vakiha being an incredibly mobile mixup-heavy rushdown character made of glass and Kouma being a beefy grappler with excellent air normals and powerful combos. The amount of times I've been dunked mid-pressure...

[22:42] <Roukan> You're like
[22:42] <Roukan> That boss in every RPG
[22:42] <Roukan> Where you get halfway through the fight and they recover half their health

[22:29] <Tsapz> A part of me dies every time I get that shield and Kouma goes through the counter

We need another Melty tournament soon, last one was awesome fun.

I had a ton of homework and an exam tomorrow I haven't studied for free Sunday, so I gathered up my Xbox and all of my games, sold the whole lot, and bought a way higher-end PS3 than I intended because that was all that was available to me and I didn't feel like trying a bunch of places. I'll double dip this game like I did with Aquapazza, though physical copies tend to take around a month to be delivered to me, here in Brazil (due to either protectionist practices or bad infrastructure in processing imported goods) :(

need to see for myself if Fiona was nerfed or actually buffed.

Unfortunately this is a really bad time for me to be having a new video game. I'm waist-deep in a research project that's going to get worse before it gets better, so I don't plan on having much time to play.

Got a quick chance to try out Chronophantasma in the Eaton Center and now I'm realizing I'm in dire need of a PS3 to play this ohmygodIamsoHYPE. Noel seems to operate similarly enough to her CS2 format, or enough so for me to get some basic combos down, but I'm gonna need to actually play it on my own time -- once I get some of my own time; you know how college crunch time is -- in order to really get my hands around the new controls.

So I made a terrible mistake in buying a PS3 and Chronophantasma yesterday. Not because I resent the system or game or anything, hell no, the system works quite well in comparison to the Xbox 360 and the game is a blessing from ALL the deities this Earth has laid witness to. No, the mistake lies within purchasing these during college crunch time. I made the note of playing during my own time, and I forget how involved I get in games like these, so now I need to show some serious bloody self-control or I am going to screw myself over royally.

But yeah, Noel's controls feel nice from what I've gotten to practice. Once I get story mode done with and get a little closer to the end of the semester, I think I'll work on maining her, Kagura and Bullet. There wouldn't happen to be any good combo listings for CP as far as anyone's aware, would there?

Kind of surprised there's been no Mother discussed yet. It's almost worrying.

So uhh

In Skullgirls I did an MvC2 style infinite where I looped an assist to death for the kill

And the announcer or something started laughing like crazy... Has this happened to anyone else cause it kinda freaked me out o_o
Title: Re: A Challenger Appears - Fighting Game General
Post by: Amraphenson on April 17, 2014, 05:56:09 PM
When you happy birthday someone (which includes assist snapbacks) and KO off that the announcer does that.

I remember it was a Merry Christmas at first wasn't it?
Is that even possible in this game? There's no Team supers...

Also I 100% main Fukua now. Can't play the full version so I'm beta only :V

Okay so you don't even have to win off a happy birthday. You just have to kill an assist and the laugh will play :V
Title: Re: A Challenger Appears - Fighting Game General
Post by: Amraphenson on April 17, 2014, 11:10:09 PM
If you DHC with your other assist already out, maybe? I dunno if that works.
Title: Re: A Challenger Appears - Fighting Game General
Post by: Suikama on April 18, 2014, 12:54:12 AM
Actually it seems the laugh does NOT trigger on any happy birthdays. If you Happy Birthday and kill them both at the same time or the assist first the laugh does not trigger. It only seems to trigger in MvC2 infinite style happy birthday, where you kill (or snap? haven't tested) the point character first and then combo the assist to death not giving them a chance to ever switch out.
Title: Re: A Challenger Appears - Fighting Game General
Post by: Amraphenson on April 18, 2014, 01:20:35 AM
yeah the double snapback definitely triggers the laugh.
Title: Re: A Challenger Appears - Fighting Game General
Post by: Suikama on April 18, 2014, 02:07:17 AM
You also have to beat on the assist for a while for it to trigger

If you happy birthday and kill the point char first and the assist soon after it doesn't happen

So basically Mike Z literally made it JUST for the MvC2 infinite situation :V

Who Arcana Heart here? But my PS3 broke so fuck

I like FG's though I suck in them. And my PS3 is dead plus I don't have a stick so I'm already boned for most choices. Since I'm filling out my new gaming PC with games, I'm thinking of getting Skullgirls, though that game always succeeds in making me kick myself for not getting up and trying to actually make an FG like how Mike Z did it. Also I have no stick. Might become a keyboard warrior though.

Finally had a little time to play Blazblue some more. I'm learning Bullet and Kokonoe, and re-learning Nu since I keep trying to do things that don't work any more because muscle memory. Bring Lambda back as DLC please, I'll pay for that...

And I finally got my PS3 hooked up to my internet in a reliable way, so feel free to do whatever it is people do when they want to play against someone online on a PS3. Send me your PS3 name or whatever, hopefully I'll have a little time over the next few days to play.

Ah yes, interbutts. That was next on my to-do list. I still have to go down to the lobby floor of my apartment building to use the internet, so until I actually converse with my roommate on splitting the internet bill for access to it from my room, I'll occasionally use the lounge WiFi and test it out for the Blazing of the Blue.

In other news, Bullet still feels amazing and she is so my main. Working on Noel and Mu on the side.

You can jump the grab on reaction unless you're in something.
Big Band's charge punch+cancel and parry are there for a reason. And heavy charge+punch does like ~20% as an assist on characters of one power higher than you; seeing a 2v1 BB punch Parasoul for a very sizeable chunk of her HP is scary. 214HK also hits fullscreen.

Anti-air Daisy Pusher is really silly but everyone has some option they can do avoid it, unless you got baited out of said option earlier. Double Jump, air dash, Parasoul umbrella float, 'bella HP float...

OKAY I just got Terumi and I want to main him so bad for no good reason right now. He just feels like too much fun.

Also, despite the internet not letting me start up any lobby matches thus far, my PSN name is now on my forum profile. For those who caught this message before I actually edited my profile, it's PatorikkuDoiru. Yes, I know, amazingly awesome name, amirite? :V

I dunno, maybe we can network test and see if this connection really is trash, and if I'm really trash. We shall see.

EDIT: Ugh no this connection won't do exactly what it's supposed to do. I guess. I'll look into getting a more secure connection over the summer, and maybe use an actual Ethernet cable too, for good measure.

It's currently ?3.49 on the Steam sale at half price, but it obviously may get cheaper or more expensive throughout the sale. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/244730/?snr=1_5_9__205)

Not sure how netplay is for, say, EU to NA, will have to test it. In any case, could be fun!

If Atlus are sponsoring it I don't see why it wouldn't be streamed - most side tournaments are anyway. (unless it's finals day)
I can't find any stream announcements right now though, they'll probably be noticeable on the day.

Eh, All the deathstroke matches were really where it was at.

Pig of the Zod was pretty cool, bar that stupid Zod vs. Aquaman though.

Uhhh I'd say yes because it's pretty solid compared to the original UNiB which was riddles with infinites. Now it currently only has one infinite with Waldstein but other than that it looks really fun, though most characters are all about long range pokes and all (except Akatsuki which is why he's low tier :V)

I'd say yes get it, although it's being released in NA sometime in 2015.

I've been curious about something for a long time and maybe you fightan-savvy people can explain it to me. What is the purpose of guts defense in fighting games? i.e. in a lot of fighting games, as your health goes down, you take less damage. I was previously told that it's to reduce combo damage, but isn't that what proration is for? I don't see what it accomplishes, besides making it harder to judge whether an attack will kill or not.

I'll report again on characters after I'm done doing work at school and got a good feel for new characters.

Alright so Ken's a bit difficult to figure out, as I kind of expected. I might never play regular Ken, beeteedubs, because they kept his original voice actor and if you thought her voice didn't fit before NOW YOU KNOW FOR SURE IT DOESN'T WORK. Shadow Ken, on the other hand, I am totally on board for.

Yukari has a pretty nice feel to her, too. I actually love how her play style is set up. Probably maining her.

I don't know why, but both versions of Sho feel so good to play. I totally wanna main as him.

I haven't tried any of the other new characters yet, or many of the old ones, but I do know that Yosuke's move set has completely changed. I think his air game might've actually improved from the last game, but it might just be me.

Right, now I better go about actually learning combos and such so I can rock the socks off of local friends!

Back on the Soku train with Remi once again. More or less resigned to never playing any other characters seriously by this point, Remi just works for me movement-wise (which is probably my most important thing to consider when picking a character). Rocking chains and REMI PUNCH these days and have levelled up my game a bit - current deck is amazingly good in diamond dust.

I've been playing quite a bit of UNIEL recently. And let me tell, it's one of the most fun fighters I've ever played. I haven't had this much fun since Melty Blood and the initial release of Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Even though I joined the dead Linne army, she's really fun to play since I feel she fits my playstyle the most. Fast movement, in-your-face playstyle, decent pressure and mixups. Oh and a divekick, even though it's punishable on block, but it still feels so right.

Thing is, I haven't seen this "Linne army" at all. In fact, I see way more Merkava, Nanase, and for a time Akatsuki. I've only ever came across one or two Linne.

I didn't see that much Linne either here, I saw a lot of Gordeau though. Everyone can play Gordeau.

I tried Linne for a while, but I changed to Orie because I love her range and her 236A/B, and I just like her more in general. Both are really fast and enjoyable.

OK so this thread needs a bump because STREET FIGHTER 5 HOLY SHIT.

You can find a video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIdnJQZ_lkg) of Combofiend playing Mike Ross on the current demo build. There's a lot of interesting stuff in this video which I'll mention, but obviously I'll suggest you watch the video first.

- Seems like stage transitions may be on KO only? Honestly I am happy about this, I didn't like the idea of mid-round transitions. It really defeats the purpose of corner control if your reward for a corner combo is knocking your opponent back to neutral. But the potential to change stage size is also interesting - if you are a zoning character and you're losing the round, it may be good strategy to deliberately die in the corner so you get knocked through and next round you'll have more space to work with.
- I really like the meaty feel of the normals here. It looks like there's proper impact and damage, especially in counter hits. It just looks satisfying to watch, nevermind play.
- Not really getting how the activations work? They're from full bar obviously, but the conditions to get rid of it seem inconsistent? Chun loses her on knockdown in a late round after holding it for ages, but Ryu's wears off very quickly even without getting hit. Is it possible that there are multiple supers, SF3 style, and Chun's one allows her a much more useful activation? It'd also explain why their EX bars are different sizes.
- I enjoyed noodle-head Chun much more than I should have. I just thought something like that was an extremely nice touch. Hell the whole game looked extremely fluid and well-animated. If the actual game is anything like this I'm really looking forward to it!
- The news of Capcom Cup getting huge boosts from Sony also has me excited. Call me e-sports if you want but I like the idea that this game can get bigger and hopefully become a proper event. And come on, man, HALF A MILLION DOLLARS. WHO THE HELL DOESN'T WANT THAT.

oh and as a last note

he's finally back (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=mO99MFWDt0g#t=79)
Title: Re: Post EVO Blues - Fighting Game General | Tournament Results Up
Post by: Gpop on December 15, 2014, 01:56:58 AM
Besides the hype return of charlie, I've also noticed a few things

- The parry/Just Defend speculations doesn't seem to be true anymore, it looks like the "extended cut" video that made it seem like it are most likely just block animations/effects from blocking Ryu's really meaty medium and heavy attacks, nothing more.

- HOWEVER, I also noticed that sometimes Ryu and Chun-li gets chipped on some normals as well, you can tell when you hear a certain sound effect during the block.

- the guard crush also seems like a Ryu-only thing as well. I noticed that when Chun-li tried to block Ryu's hadouken while in the activation mode, she looks like she got "crushed" but Mike Ross didn't capitalize because he wouldn't have expected it either. Kinda disappointing really.

- Ramen hat confirmed top tier.

the ramen hat will revolutionize the disrespect metagame, especially if every stage has an equivalent

now not only can you get perfected, but you can get perfected with style

on the other hand you have the disrespect option select like yeah i may have lost but you still got ramen'd :V
You gotta put all that salt somwhere :V

Also, correction on the blocking thing, it seems that ALL NORMALS will also chip, but instead of chipping away health normally, it creates recoverable health, so if you get chipped by normals, your health can still recover that chipped health. Specials still chips normally, however.

Apparently Saya from Saya No Uta is playable (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-12-31/nitro-blasterz-gameplay-videos-preview-ein-mora-al-ruili-saya/.82777) in that Nitro+ game. Don't know how I feel about that (actually I do, and it's "strong reservations"). Also after seeing gameplay it occurs to me how weird it is that they picked the stealth-based Phantom who rarely directly fights anyone for the fighting game. Cal probably would have made more sense than Ein for the Phantom character. I assume she's an assist or something.

P4U instead of UNIEL is gonna make some people really angry though.

P4U instead of UNIEL is gonna make some people really angry though.
Honestly, despite UNIEL being a much better game imo, the problem is that the NA release still isn't out and we can't really say how popular it will be when it does. P4U was a much better choice because of its popularity (and I think it's even more popular than BB)

The UNIEL community more-or-less expected it. I'd say it's the BB community that'd be really angry though.

The UNIEL community more-or-less expected it.
Oh, I expected it too, but that is still sad for UNIEL people. I like P4U but I think UNIEL deserved more exposure, if only to get people interested before the game is out, but I guess nobody wanted to put that money on the table.

I'd say it's the BB community that'd be really angry though.
IIRC, I read somewhere that the reception of the game was really negative in Japan since the last update, and that Garireo quit playing the game. Don't quote me on that though.

But more importantly, on which version the game should have been played? BBCP2 has been out for a while in japanese arcardes, but we have yet to see a console version. And I'm not even talking about localization that will take like twenty years considering we are talking about Arc System Works (Europe? What's Europe?). Currently, BlazBlue community is divided in two with Japan on BBCP2 and everybody else on BBCP. That being said, I don't see how this game could have ended up at EVO this year.

Might as well say what I think about the whole game roster.

USF4. Freaking duh.

UMvC3. Not much surprise, the game is still fairly popular in USA, but I feel like its hype is fading. I think it's fun to watch though, but I don't see it being at EVO next year.

SSBU, double duh, it's recent and has a lot of players. I like the game, but I probably won't watch it. I find it boring to watch, but eh, that's cool for the players. Good luck to the commentators.
Of course Melee was going to be at the party too. Apex 2015 gathered more Melee players than for EVO2014, and Melee stayed more popular than even the all recent Smash 4 for this same event, so they probably want to break that record with EVO2015.

GGXrd, and triple duh. I don't play the game yet, but it looks fun, and a lot of people in my association play it. Originally, I wanted to wait for it to come to Europe but eh... ASW Europe are a bunch of assholes. I look forward to it.

As for KI and MKX... I dunno, I don't like those games so I don't know how they fare popularity-wise.

Tekken 7 is a surprise. Players won't have a lot of time to train since it comes out in February, but I guess Namco wanted that exposure.

RIP KoFXIII. o7

The big problem with UNIEL is that it's not even super popular in Japan either, according to my friend. The big three atm are, unsurprisingly, GGXrd, P4U, and BB, while DBFC is actually a close fourth. Heck, he said there's even more Melty Blood cabinets than UNIEL atm.

I think UNIB's initial reception killed off a lot of the community to give the game a chance even in UNIEL right now is a really good game. It's basically the same with how Hopeless Masquerade's initial reception basically pushed away a lot of possible players to give it a chance if the end result after multiple patches made the game actually decent.

SF is a given
Marvel is given
GG is a given
Two smash games, I don't like that. I like smash, but it shouldn't take 2 spots.
I don't play KI, so I can't comment on it.
MKX I can kind of understand, but it's still a big gamble because we have no idea whether or not the game will be competitively balanced enough (think SFxT).

P4U is the giant head-scratcher out of this entire list. BBCP2 hits JP consoles April, UNIEL hits NA consoles February, but P4U2 doesn't even have a release date announced yet for either region. I was hoping for BB to be on the list, and I would've been fine if UNIEL made it instead. But not P4U2, fuck that noise. Who the even plays P4U2 competitively? I know the game's pretty popular to play casually, but the number of competitive P4U2 players is laughably small. The game baaaaaaaaaaarely makes the cut for being a competitive FG, and that's being generous. Even UNIEL is a more competitive than P4U2, and that's a big fucking deal considering the fact that UNIEL has cross-up protection, meaty-throw protection, rising overhead protection, fuzzy protection, no combo variety, and no airtech oki.

yes i mad

I don't know too much about BB in general, but I did see the Top 8 last year. That Grand Finals, man. Hopefully we'll see something like that happen with the games this year.

Two Smash games in interesting. I get the feeling that EVO won't have both games' Top 8s on Sunday though. I just hope they give Smash 4 its chance to shine in its first year and put it on Sunday.

I'm actually really curious about UNIEL. From what I've seen of it thus far, it seems to be a pretty technical fighter, but a bit faster-paced than Blazblue. It seems to have a meter system like Melty Blood, too, and I did like how Melty Blood played. (aside from the kind of universal 5B>2B>2C>5C>j.B>j.C>jc>j.B>j.C>air throw combo just about every character could pull off, and those goddamn cats...) How would you guys describe it?

Way more footsie-based. And by footsies, I mean half to full screen footsies most of the time. It's also much more grounded than Melty Blood.

It's really fun in it's own way. And the best part is that it doesn't really overtake Melty Blood, rather it goes well with it. I still go back to Melty Blood for air-dashing crazy combo action and UNIEL for ground-based crazy combo action :V

I think UNIEL is slower than UNIEL. UNIEL's reverse-beat on normals makes blockstrings way longer than BB on average. Also, a large portion of UNIEL basically boils down to fullscreen footsies and frametraps during long blockstrings. Also, UNIEL has very few standing overheads, and they're all slow as shit, like 27f average. And you can't do instant overheads either since the game has instant OH protection. And cross-up protection. And wake-up throw protection. And air oki protection. The only thing UNIEL has that's faster is throw tech, 13f vs BB's 15f, but on the other hand UNIEL's hitstun/blockstun throw tech window is 29f vs BB's 27f.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate UNIEL. Hell, I even wish it was on EVO main stage. And even though UNIEL's a newer game, I'd still rather play Melty.
Title: Re: Post EVO Blues - Fighting Game General | Tournament Results Up
Post by: Gpop on February 25, 2015, 04:09:33 AM
Air Oki protection is to make up for the fact that when you tech in the air you're in free fall state and can't do anything on the way down like you can in Melty.

This is a work of art and I could not have asked for more in life.

EDIT (06/04) because double-posting is wrong and you know it: HOLY HELL I tried playing some online UNIEL in an unranked room and I cannot stop getting wrecked! The skill gap in this game is real, just as I kind of expected it to be. So in that regard, mind if I ask for some advice if anyone's used to a character like Chaos? I mean, I have the basic combo theory of his down, but playing a decent offensive or defensive game is where I really need a hand. That said, it may just be that I need that kind of help on a fundamental level instead.

That said, I did make an observation on how quick a lot of people are on picking up hit confirms, and I could never hope to be that quick on the reflexes, really...

EDIT again: Completely irrelevant to the rest of the post, but I must point out that the quality of anime fighters' soundtracks is truly magnificent.

Absolutely amazing just how intense, just how emotional these last few matches reached. I thought LF would be a tough act to follow, but GF sure as hell was up there. This time, we actually have seen everything, dubious or otherwise, but this will without a doubt be a top 8 to remember. I cannot blame James and Seth for getting emotional during the sendoff either.

It's just not possible to make big-name fighting games with sprites anymore, so I'm not surprised. Here's hoping it's economical enough to make a big roster, though :V

It is weird seeing the characters in 3D though. It feels like big redesign.

It's looking pretty good so far, and it's already close to a quarter funded despite not even being on IGG for a full day.

I'll try to get (if my wallet allows me) it along with NitroPlus Blasterz (and before that, Blade Arcus and Koihime Enbu on PS3, and AH3LM on Steam)

currently using Akira (with Dokuro-chan, thanks to kawaiikochans (http://kawaiikochan.tumblr.com/post/105452710501/i-cant-believe-my-kung-fu-guy-is-ten-years-ahead)) on vanilla version, will see if I like to play the new characters (quenser looks interesting, tatsuya looks fast with kirifuda and seems to have a lot of combo starters and some ambiguous left-right okizeme with his sister); don't know anything about the new red-haired girl (and I haven't read/watched any of the manga/anime from any of the game's characters, have only a little time available on weekends to try to explore that)

don't know if many will agree with what I'll say, but it seems to me that fighting games nowadays attempt to aim for freshness (looking and feeling different enough from what has been done before), so there will be different kinds of outdated games, for example, street fighter 2nd impact to 3rd strike, and 3rd strike to sfiv; the latter case features two distinct gameplays, and that distinctiveness may be a replay factor; in this sense, "fighting games don't have an expiry date". (I realize that a problem with fgs nowadays is that people come and go from them when they're released, as soon as another new fighting game appears, and thus the people that keep playing have less diversity of players, don't know what else to do besides keeping playing what you want and help the game get more attention; there's another problem, the mentality of "maining few games", and/or the overestimation of how much effort is needed to start learning a new game, something else that I would like to be changed but don't know how.)

Seeing Taiga as S tier makes me very happy, she's more than viable now! Though I have to wonder what are the best type of assists to use for her? I use Enju because I like her too and she's a great combo-extender, but dunno if that's actually enough to make her good.

The only drastic changes seem to be Taiga and Asuna getting higher. From videos I'm seeing, Taiga's normals got buffed like made so a lot of them hit farther than they seem (making it MUCH easier to confirm into the A > B > C magic chain). Her sled also got a great buff change that the EX sled will actually forces the opponent back to the ground (and you can even confirm into her Supers from it now as well).

I should clarify that by out of date in this case I mean there's a new revision out there, though not currently in console form. But, heck, it's AH3 so it's all good. The awareness of a more current revision does give me a slight bit of pause, that's all.

Maybe mentioning that my other favorite fighting game of the previous gen was Tatsunoko vs Capcom will help indicate that I'm not afraid of playing a game with a small but dedicated community?

I just wanted to say that THE BIG HOUSE 5 IS SOOOOOO CRAZYYYYYY.

Goddamn, EVO wasn't half as good as that. There's a Luigi in Top 8. Plup, Druggedfox and Axe got upset, Mang0 almost got sent to losers by Nintendude. Abate triggered a glitch 99% of the players there didn't see in 14 years of this game's life, sending S2J in Losers in the process. Scar and Toph going to Top 64.

And the Crews were huge. Sad Europe didn't win but it was a great showdown. Can't wait until Top 8 happens.

Hey, looks like some games are heading for Steam. (http://arcsystemworksu.com/arc-system-works-releasing-5-titles-on-steam-by-summer-2016/)
Namely, BBCPEX, GGXrd, UNIEL and... MBAACC.

So, while they won't get a penny from me for BB or GG considering they are one year old and the sequels are coming, I might get Melty Blood just in order to support it. I still wonder what kind of online they got though, it will be hard to beat the rollback system we already got.

It will most likely use MBAACC's default netcode. Maybe slightly improved to make up for more international netplay but only about as good as UNIEL's netcode probably.

I picked up Blazblue Chrono Phantasma Extend on sale earlier. I played Chrono Phantasma some even though they fucking took away Lambda, but I eventually quite because I couldn't deal with not having her and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax came out, which I strongly prefer mechanically to Blazblue. Nu was a barely-passable substitute in Chrono Phantasma, but she just wasn't the same. The angles of her attacks were all wrong and she didn't have the trapping potential that I relied on Lambda and her Sickle Storm for. When Chrono Phantasma Extend came out I heard she was back, but I was kind of sour on Arc System for taking her away in the first place, so I didn't want to pay full price. Saw it for a price I thought was fair today, so I guess I'm back in.

So Lambchop is back, but I didn't know how different she was. The answer is... Significantly. She feels so slow and cumbersome now. Her new drive, Sword Summoning Ex, is a lot different from Sword Summoning II and I haven't really figured it out yet. The combos involving it are gatlings on and they feel a lot different. I don't know. Some of her inputs are just reversed for no reason, Sickle Storm now always comes out reversed and you can't do a non-reversed version as far as I can tell, and there are certain things that used to jump cancel that don't seem to anymore, or if they do the timing is different. She has a new move, which is cool, but I don't know what it's for yet really. Crescent Blade hits much closer to her body which makes it feel a lot weaker, although it seems like it now rotates all the way around her body so presumably it hits below and behind her now in the rare event that that matters (not really a fair tradeoff). And again they fucked with the angles on her swords again. Most of them come out closer to her so you can't really do projectile juggles when your opponent unless they're like six inches from your face because 6D goes right over their head otherwise.

I'll play some actual games with her over the next few days, but I'm not really happy with this right now. I don't know how the tiers shook out so I don't know how good she's supposed to be. She probably has tools that I haven't figured out yet, and maybe her playstyle is different now, but original Lambda is burned into my brain so vividly that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get comfortable with something similar but so different. And that's one of the reasons I'll never be any good at fighting games, I guess. :V

A lot of characters in BB have had their some of their normals nerfed by making them not jump cancelable, and this applied to a lot of characters throughout the patches. This was an active attempt to nerf air movement and air-barrier, both of which were too strong. It was also why they decided to make almost every B and C normals air unblockable for everyone as well. As for Lambda's speed, I'd say it's nearly identical. Almost all of her normals still have the same frame data since CS1, 5D is still 15f, 5A is still 6f, 2B is still 9f, etc. As for mobility, I think she's better with the addition of 22D.

Lambda still plays the same as CS2/CSE. Her gameplan is still zoning+lockdown and hitconfirming into combo > 236B and/or 236C > swords. Her main strength is her ability to output consistent and reliable damage, as well as superb corner carry, off of any confirm with or without meter anywhere on the screen. Not to mention, her combos are pretty straightforward and simple. She's also given a good amount of tools to help her too. 236C does mad chip and is amazing oki. 22D is really fast and fatals. j2D floats so every combo easily goes into air swords. 6B has insane range. Backdash is amazing. 2B does everything. Superb anti-airs (multiple!). Sadly, she's considered average at best, solely because of 2 things: bad defense, and she's not Nu. That's it, but those weaknesses are enough to stop her from being a strong character.

Alright, spent some more time messing around with the game, got some more stuff figured out.

Turns out the whole "feels slower" thing is all up to the missing jump cancels. She feels slower because she can't transition from ground to air as easily. It really makes her feel slow, at least to me. Maybe I'll get used to it.

I've sort of figured out some of her missing/changed moves and options. Directional Sickle Storm and charged Spike Chaser are still sort of in the game, but they're not easily accessible. Sickle Storm is context dependent. It pushes away when enemies are far away and pulls in when they're close. Which is mostly fine, that's typically what you'd do with it, but not having the option is a tiny bit limiting. Spike Chaser can't be charged any more, but it automatically goes fullscreen in overdrive. This feels like a huge blow, since it means that now 4D is her only meterless fullscreen pressure option, and 4D kind of sucks.

The upside is that the new Sword Summoner special cancels into pretty much anything, which makes Sickle Storm a lot easier to just throw out. That's probably a huge buff actually, but I'm not used to it yet and it feels terrible every time I confirm into what used to be a solid combo, try to jump, and just drop the combo because I can't any more. Unlearning that is going to be hard.

Over the last few weeks I've been playing a lot, at least for me, of Blazblue. Usually I play an hour or two a week of a fighting game even when I'm actively into it, but I have like ten or twelve hours in BBCPEX in the last few days.

It didn't start off great. Everybody I played it with was like "What the fuck, why did they arbitrarily change so much stuff? I feel like I have to relearn my whole character but they've barely even changed", and I don't necessarily disagree. But we've been playing it more, getting used to it, and kind of warming up to it. It still feels pretty arbitrary, but it does feel a little more balanced maybe for all that trouble.

Playing Lambda still just makes me mad, especially after briefly playing with Nu. Her ramge sucks, the angles of all of her projectiles suck, and I can't reliably take advantage of anything new that she might have going for her. If I put a bunch of time into working on her I might be able to fix that, but I'm too frustrated to do that now. Instead I've been playing Tager and Platinum, and they seem mostly fine. Definitely very different than I remember, but I don't know if that's a Chrono Phantasma thing or an Extend thing.

EVO2016 line-up was announced while I was sleeping.

Street Fighter V
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Mortal Kombat X
Killer Instinct
Guilty Gear Xrd R
Pokken Tournament
Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
Tekken 7 FR

I think the only surprise here is Pokk?n instead of Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Oh, yeah, and -RELEVATOR- instead of -SIGN-, what's going on, Arcsys?

EVO appears to have evolved into a marketing gimmick instead of a fighting game tournament.  Oh well.

Also, I guess it's time to update the thread back to pre-EVO hype :V

Well considering Relevator is coming out in spring and the NA release coming just days after the JP version it makes sense.

Sorry, I'm still seeing this from my plebian EU perspective.

:(

I'm gonna be watching SFV, Melee, Smash 4 for sure, UMvC3 and GG if I am still alive, and I'm kinda curious about Pokk?n.

Are you getting Ignition? I got it too and I'm getting it shipped next week.

Also I'm hearing from some people that Nitro+ Blasterz is meh in the end from what they tried.

I got npb (and dfci and koihime enbu as well), and really liked the game

- nice movement options and speed
- like AquaPazza, the playstyles vary greatly (and -- once again, like AquaPazza, --personally I like a lot of said playstyles, to the point that if I stick to one character, I get into an urge to play the other characters as well)
- nice mechanics (vanishing guard, escape action, variable rush, infinite blast, guard cancel..)
- nice mix-up game (throws, short hops -- down+D --, vanishing guard..) with balanced combo damage from pressure-based combo starters (short hop, throw, lows)
- nice neutral game
- current meta favors short combos (due to heavy damage scaling, similar to AquaPazza, and dem hueg comboz giving the opponent a lot of meter)
- anyone can start playing the characters in a basic level (the inputs aren't difficult -- the hardest ones being 632146, or 236236 --, the game doesn't force you to do "optimal combos" -- unless when playing against an advanced opponent, in which case, the cause of defeat would likely not be on the "lack of practice for optimal combos")
- assists (like in AquaPazza) don't have to be combo-oriented

there's a recent system mechanic video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivGP_Y7ymrs

btw, the american version of NitroPlus Blasterz will come out on February 2nd, and the japanese version of Koihime Enbu is out already (released on January 28th)

edit: there's a homepage for the US version of NitroPlus Blasterz: http://www.nitroplusblasterz.com/

Just played npb for the first time. picked saya because waifu, and holy shit she is downright oppressive. All I did was A>B>C>bomb/super and teleport around and divedrill, and I went 5-0 against the guy who actually played the game.
Title: Re: Post EVO Hype - Fighting Game General

maybe he was trying to punish you (I don't know how to play against her either), when he actually couldn't, and/or overused the vanishing guard (trying to punish you too out of blockstrings, rather than using it to negate chip damage); I have a friend who random picked her and I would've made the mistakes above (the one regarding overusing vanishing guard and not knowing how to beat the next attack -- and focusing too much on throwing an attack after a vanishing guard, rather than an escape option, or even relying too much on vanishing guard too -- wasn't limited to playing against saya, though).

I have some ideas about how he could win, but haven't tested them yet:
- saving meter for variable rush (punish) when he sees a punishable long-range attack from saya
- using an assist that helps saya get defensive so he can get in and start the mix-ups
- patiently avoid being hit by her long-range normals (and air unblockable attacks such as 6A, 2C.. use vanishing guard while in the air to block these) and hit her defense and start pressuring her from there
- knock her down with a 6E guard cancel (costs one meter), approaching her while she's down should be safer after that (I think that, besides vanishing guard and variable rush, the only wakeup reversal option she has would be her lethal blaze, which costs 3 meters)
- knowing that assists can't be hit by the opponent, it could be a viable tactic to use vanishing guard on a blockstring (from saya, in that case) and cancel the vanishing guard into an assist (which could lead to the one summoning the assist to be hit afterwards, but then have the saya player be hit by the assist character and possibly even comboed after)

Downloaded Nitroplus Blasterz last night, but it took so long to update my Playstation and download the game that I didn't really have time to play it. I played a handful of rounds but I was so tired that all I really did was stumble around and mash A. The default button layout makes no sense to me and the game seems to use five buttons which I'm not thrilled about. Probably going to main Phantom but I didn't learn much about how she works.

BUT her side b does go quite low and goes into huge damage combos so that might work

Also her own gun special are like pseudo needles :V

Bought it myself.  I didn't quite have much difficulty getting used to the button layout.  But someone needs to tell them that "SNK Bosses" are beyond behind the times.  On default difficulty, I only lost 1 round until the final boss of "Story Mode" (it really should have been called "Arcade Mode").  Then the final boss promptly curb stomped me.  After trying about ten times I said to hell with it, quit, and then set difficulty to minimum.

I haven't played much more since my original post, but I have played some. The button layout thing isn't probably a general problem, it's probably just a me problem. I learned fighting games with four-button games and I've just never been able to wrap my head around where to put my fingers for anything else. I might be able to cheat around that limitation with creative button mapping if I sit down and figure it out, or maybe I just need to switch to a controller (from an arcade stick) for this game, but it's definitely a five-button game which really throws me personally for a loop.

And this may just be nobody knowing the mechanics yet, but I feel like this game is really, really slow-paced. The short combos are nice, but movement feels pretty slow too for most characters. That's not necessarily terrible or anything, but it's quite a shock after playing nothing but Blazblue recently.

I've beat her on my second attempt (on the japanese release, which was out on December 10th), saw what was killing me (the crystal pillars, occasional horizontal shots, occasional counterattacks, and learned about the unblockable lvl 3 black hole -- reminded me of King of Fighters '97's Orochi's Super Desperation Move's, and generally the way to dodge it was the same: to keep going back until it's over), and came with a plan that seems to increase my chances: to stay on the air (being on the air generally reduces combo potential, compared to being on the ground), to use assists (you can call assists while airborne) to score hits (and possibly convert them into combos) against the boss, and use long-range attacks while airborne (or occasionally punish the boss' recovery with invincible and/or fast attacks such as Variable Rushes and supers)

(for a little reference) this video shows that it's also possible to convert the boss' approach attempts into simple super combos, and to randomly punish her attempts to hit you from distance, while she's recovering from said attacks (although this video seemingly has lots of mistakes -- when you see the boss use her lvl 3, you don't go towards her.. lol -- and risky decisions that ended up working against the AI, such as the lethal blaze -- a.k.a. lvl 3 super -- at the end): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PEqQiOtWR8

this score attack video seems like a better reference (even though it's a different mode), showing that the boss doesn't use vanishing guard often and can be chip-damaged (and pressured, which gives you a bit of super meter if she blocks you correctly, at least): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmAgmOopC3M

I use my thumb for the D button, index/middle/ring finger on A/B/C (respectively), and either index+middle or ring finger on E; for A+D (A assist), I use both index+thumb, and for B+D (B assist) I use either index+thumb (rotating my wrist a little) or middle+thumb; for A+B+C (infinite blast), I use index+middle+ring, for B+C (throws) I use index+middle (moving my wrist to the side a little), and for C+E (variable rush) I use index+thumb (moving my wrist), then use index (or index+middle) on the buttons I want to press

about the game's speed, I think that it's one more case of the game itself not being slow, but being commonly played slower than it allows to; see this video for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC_djOnwbjY

That's how I put my hand too, although my stick has eight buttons. I have it wired like this:

XABC
DXXX

(The Xs are wired up, I just don't remember what they are because I never use them.)

I don't typically use shortcut buttons, if I want A+D or whatever I just press those buttons. I've tried mapping E all over the place, but wherever I put it I either reach for the wrong button when I need it or I get it right, but I don't put my hand back in the right place and fuck up all my other buttons. I could probably get around that with practice I guess, but it's pretty irritating.

As for the speed, fair enough. It seems a little zoney right now, but I think that's mostly just my choice of characters. And the rushdown characters do seem to have some strong tools, so I imagine it balances out. A lot of characters seem to have very slow ground speeds but command movement options which is a weird choice, but I guess it works.

(I only watched the first match of the linked video, but I don't know, it still seems pretty slow to me.)

I use the default arcade layout

A B C -
D - E -

and I don't get how the movement could be considered slow (unless you're somehow not using dashes or steps, depending on character -- pressing forward or backward twice; can be done on the air too), the video had a very nice character variety (needs to watch past the first match though.. lots of characters were used) and demonstrated the game's speed well too..

A SFV is out...

... and it's godawful unless you do nothing but play online multiplayer, and the server feels like cooperating.

And even single-player requires an online connection at all times.  No arcade ladder.  Challenges are not currently available.  "Story Mode" is piss easy.  Survival is the only significant mode available for single player.  It's missing modes and Capcom already has a season pass for sale.  It looks like an unfinished beta.

That's because it is... They released the game about a full month early with only the features they consider complete and thoroughly tested so people have more time to practice for the Capcom Pro Tour.

It's basically either they release the game early and release single-player content later for free so people can practice for Capcom Pro Tour and EVO, or release it later and fuck up their own schedules enough to be forced to use USF4 once again for the year (which will probably mean delaying SF5 for another year).

I'm mostly gonna be watching for Xrd, but I'll probably watch a bit of the new games to see if they hold my interest.

I just saw the Catherine finals. Man, that was epic. XD
Seriously, I had no idea it would be that intense. Giving a block to the opponent just to then pull it away so he fall to his doom and so on. XD

Uh, hello. New guy here.

I'm not too big of a fan of fighting games though I don't really suck at them, either. I've been looking for a Soku thread so that I could fight against someone of similar skill level. I'm guessing this is it, huh?

Also: which fighting games would you all recommend? The Steam Winter sales are coming in a month or so and I'm just waiting to get to waste my money for games I'm never going to touch!

Finally just cracked open my copy of Blazblue Central Fiction (too late to get my free DLC character download it seems, oops). Lambchop is sort of fixed! Yay!

So does anyone know how to use a legacy controller with Blazblue? Or any other PS4 game for that matter? It was recognizing my arcade stick but I could seem to get it to actually work.

IIRC, how my friend did it is he turned his PS4 controller down, and then plugged his PS3 stick in. I know it worked when we played yesterday, at least.

(Also, you could have gotten that DLC even without having the game, too bad.)

I like how many options she has now with her 236B follow ups, but I still somehow found myself jumping over to main Hibiki over her. I love his mixup game and his BnB is a breeze to pull off. It's just a shame I can't keep up with most players online and make good use of his kit. :V

I know that feel on not touching games I've dropped cash on, my dude :V

Soku discussion would normally be in the Help Me, Eirin! (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/board,6.0.html) subforum, but it doesn't look like there's any threads there. That said, I'm fairly certain most folk in this thread have Soku around.

I picked up Melty Blood on Steam earlier when it was on sale, but I've heard around that the Steam port has some issues? I'd need a confirm on that. Some other personal favourites (as up to date as I can keep with these) are UNIEL, (Under Night In-birth Exe:Late) Blazblue Central Fiction, Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator, and Skullgirls, but I think maybe 1 or 2 of those 4 is on Steam right now.

I'm not liking SF5 season 2 much. Many of the changes feel like they're making the game worse and most of them are pretty subtle. I was hoping for a bigger upgrade like the leap from Super Street Fighter 2 to Super Turbo. I think this game kinda needs one.

I can't believe this is actually a game. People have been joking about it for years. Although the presumed version was Blazblue, Persona, Guilty Gear, and Jojo. Still, the important ones are there.

Pretty much all of this.

I cannot believe everybody at Capcom looked at that character and said : "Yeah, hm, no problem, everybody will love this guy."

The Tetris player is at a slight disadvantage (https://clips.twitch.tv/AntediluvianBoxyTapirYouDontSay) ~ IGN

We SFV AE now bois. (http://shoryuken.com/2017/10/05/street-fighter-v-arcade-edition-spotted-on-amazon-scheduled-for-a-january-16th-2018-release/)

All the XKira and Amazon leaks are true; second V-Triggers for everyone, Arcade Ladder w/ various opponent routes (VF-like?) based on the previous games' characters (SF1/SF2/SFA/etc routes), "Extra Battle" where you must beat challenges on a monthly rotation to unlock costumes (incl. example VIEWTIFUL JOE costume for Rashid), amongst smaller things like an art gallery and UI updates,

SFV AE will be sold as it's own game (for $40/?30/?34), but all of the content will be packaged as a free update for current SFV owners.

Considering the previous events with the SFV development cycle, the hype levels may vary here. That, and it may be a consolation prize for those who weren't sold on MvCI.

e: changed a letter for anyone who wrongly believes it's already out.
