Title: New official manga announced, "Forbidden Scrollery"
Post by: cuc on September 25, 2012, 09:12:47 AM
ZUN has just announced on Twitter a new official manga serialization.

Here's a blog post that has embedded ZUN's tweets about the manga, including a photo of the magazine page saying the serialization will begin next month.
http://blog.livedoor.jp/noegasukida/archives/17920028.html

The new manga will be serialized in the Comptiq Ace monthly magazine. ZUN said he can't drink together with the mangaka, meaning the mangaka is younger than 20.

The name can only be partially seen from the photo: 東方鈴XX ~ Forbidden xxx.

(鈴 means "bell".)

EDIT:
We should know about the full name of the manga in a few days.

New album, and now a new manga series? This is awesome. I love that ZUN doesn't feel obliged to bang out game after game, but will also take the time to indulge in other creative endeavors. Good on him. Looking forward to reading this!

Same here. Although, I must add that I'm glad that having an ambiguous "normal" job and being married hasn't slowed ZUN down~! :3

Anyway, as for the upcoming manga itself, I'm keeping an open mind with this one (as with just about all of the items that ZUN pumps out)...

I'm not really going to speculate much yet myself, since a title such as "Forbidden Scrollery" is too vague, I think, and can be taken in many different directions; the artwork is very old-fashioned and interesting, but still very vague, too, and just goes with the title while not really adding much detail~

That one-eyed creature looks  a bit out-of-place for the series...

Anyway, it's nice to know that the blog teased the possibility of there being a new character!

It's most likely this would involve a new character since (I think) each series has at least a new character.

If I were to guess what this'll be about I'd guess magic, the witches and so forth since im getting "Magic Library" vibes from the picture, either that or im hoping it's to do with the Occult Club.

Has this Mangaka done anything prior to this or is this her first work?

Perhaps it's some sort of traditional youkai? We've seen some of them in SoPM after all.

Has this Mangaka done anything prior to this or is this her first work?

Searched far and wide for the name but couldn't find anything. Do most mangakas have much on their resume before the age of 20?

As for the picture, I'm interested by the gramophone, since Akyu happens to own one as well, but I guess anyone could have just found it too.

Don't care about the manga itself, but I hope that if there's a new character, ZUN will put her in his next game. Can't fight the lunarians, can't fight Kasen, and I'm sick of it. <_<

Yes, one that you can fight in a danmaku game. With new characters revealed outside of books, I'm worried that they might not show up in one, which is really all I'm interested in. <_<

ZING!

A newly introduced character that seems to be making her appearance rather known (especially in written works).

But yeah I'm personally hyped for the new book as well, because I'm curious what ZUN has in store for us in terms of what the story will be about.

There's been speculations as of this point that this may focus on Patchouli, the Earth Palace, or Akyuu so far. But of course this is too early to be guessing...

What I am very curious about though is what made ZUN decide to pick up this unknown girl who is too young to drink, to draw up a manga work for him?  Where did he find her? What made him decide to do this? It seems ZUN's been picking a lot of unknown artist lately and making them rise to notability with his written works.

For some reason, I actually like that ZUN has some characters that only appear in written works. He does this with only a handful of girls, and keeps churning out new girls for new games. I like that a few of them will be literary-only. Makes for me a more varied Gensokyan experience.

Yeah. Having characters unique to the print works gives them something different to identify with, and I appreciate that not every character ZUN introduces is a fighter - having a more peaceful perspective on Gensokyo shows off a side of it that you don't normally see in the main games when you're thick in the action. As long as they're fun, interesting characters, I don't mind if they only show up in the one story.

(That said: it's also pretty cool when ZUN ties both the Windows and written works together (a la Great Fairy Wars), but I can understand why that doesn't happen very often.)

On-topic: I'm really interested in seeing what ZUN has planned with this series. The manga he's published so far each had their own kind of flavour -  the Three Fairies stories were an episodic comedy, SSiB had Tactical Espionage Action?,  WaHH is a slice-of-life building up to a greater mystery - and the title and promo-art leave me with the impression that he's aiming for something more horror-ish this time.

This just dawned on me, but if you look carefully at all the creatures in that one image, the smoke they're emerging from seems to be coming off that book on the lower left.
Now, given the title of 'Forbidden Scrollery', and this new theory of mine, it seems to imply that the possible new character might well have the ability to bring art to life.

Title: Re: New official manga announced, "Forbidden Scrollery"

Who knows? But the images seem to imply that ability at least.
Or perhaps it's a book-related power, such as making a book's content's real. Which would imply that book is a Youkai Compendium, or perhaps a transcription of the Hyakki Yako.

He's really cranking these things out, it seems. Though I haven't read any of the manga myself, it's interesting to see that ZUN is putting so much into the characters outside of the games. I think the fame of the series pretty much lets him take it wherever he wants, which is probably something he dreamed of being able to do before Touhou was so popular.

The name Forbidden Scrollery makes me think of Byakuren, for obvious reasons. Perhaps it will somehow involve her, or even be about her. Like, her past with her brother or what she had done in Makai along with her ventures including the Myouren Crew. Maybe Shinki will appear!?!?! Doubtful.

I do have a slight belief Byakuren will somehow be involved. I don't think it will have anything else to do with what I said, but it's a possibility Byakuren is at least involved. Like others have said, a new character will be introduced, likely as the main character. Whatever the case, I'm looking forward to it! Comes out around the same time as the Dark Souls DLC. That will be a FANTASTIC week~

And yeah, I thought of Byakuren too, but then again, it seems silly to assume that just because the title sounds like scroll. It's ZUN we're talking about here, he's unpredictable anyway >_> He mastered the art of drunken-material-making.

本居小鈴 Motoori Kosuzu,

Title:

Ability:
Deciphering books

Daughter of the human village book renter 鈴奈庵 Suzunaon. Friend of Akyuu.

Kosuzu means "little bell". Motoori is obviously a reference to the 18th century scholar Motoori Norinaga.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motoori_Norinaga

The symbol for Suzunaon is a tulip (suzuna in Japanese, meaning "bell vegetable").

<Jana> I decided to follow Ruro's example and will keep these details as spoilers for now, since we haven't had a chance to read the manga yet~

Didn't quite work as planned but the important bits aren't legible!

A rickshaw has been spotted, further confirming the size of human village as quite large.

New concepts: ancient tengu writing system, infernal flora

Apparently Reimu has known Kosuzu for a long time, and is very friendly towards her. Kosuzu is much younger, so she treats Reimu with respect.

(Don't think I have to spoiler the following, since it's not directly connected to the story.)

About the name Suzunaon 鈴奈庵:
Motoori Norinaga's house is called 鈴屋 "Suzu-no-ya" (House of Bells).

The 庵 in 鈴奈庵 comes from his  art-names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art-name) 瞬庵 and 春庵 (uncertain about pronunciations). The word 庵 refers to a scholar's residence.

EDIT:
As a 2chan post pointed out, we finally have a character whose parents we can be sure about.
Kosuzu is wearing an apron which has her name (and name of Suzunaon) on it, "you can feel her love towards her family".

I don't think Touhou would stop being misanthropic (that's part of the charm), but getting married would definitely mellow ZUN out. Which is good news for me.

EDIT2:
Marisa's title:
極めて普通のマジシャン Extremely Ordinary Magician

So from the bits we could gather on IRC just now the story is about
a magic book written by youkai that Marisa has an interest in. Said book is in Kosuzu's possession. Also Kosuzu's store is not just selling books, she also rents them out, and one of her customers is Akyuu as is seen at the start of the story.

New concepts: ancient tengu writing system, infernal flora

Apparently Reimu has known Kosuzu for a long time, and is very friendly towards her. Kosuzu is much younger, so she treats Reimu with respect.

This has gotten me interested. Veeeerrrrry interested. Hopefully Hatate gets involved She doesn't really seem to be anywhere... ever. Momiji's lack of appearances is understandable, hopefully she'll appear too, but Hatate really needs some love. And Aya is Aya, so I'll be happy to see her regardless. God, I love the tengu~ Not getting my hopes up though. I wish not to be disappointed.

I'm just as equally interested to see how exactly Reimu and Kosuzu will interact with each other. I for some reason foresee Kosuzu trying to help out and goofing up in the end. She just looks like that kind of character. Looks can of course be deceiving.

Tomorrow will be a great day! (if it's scanlated)

EDIT: Well, I doubt she's the type to goof around, now that I think about it ;^^

I wouldn't hold my breath. Official manga have a pretty bad history when it comes to getting scanslated promptly. Sangetsuei is still working on the last three chapters, and WAHH has fallen volumes behind. I suppose it's conceivable that there would be more interest in a first chapter, when everyone's still curious to see what the new character is like, but in general there's not much rush.

The Chinese fandom has already got the magazine, and will probably release a translation tomorrow. They say they are willing to share the raw with Western fans.

Now, who will do the English translation? Should I contact Gensokyo.org?

Don't be so doubtful, part of the problem mainly centers about the standards of some translation groups, like Volie and ViVid seeks good quality pages for transitions and editing. While there are more independent groups that will take anything just for the sake of making sure that the fans can get thier translations. Sangetsuei close to being done, but lack of staff cause it to reach a halt (upon the group who was doing). WaHH is only 4 chapters behind, and the group that's been doing that has been buying the books (the one's that are 5 chapters a book) which is why there's generally a delay (they like high quality pages and bonus material)
Personally I would be interested if we could somehow help out these groups in some way so that translations can speed up a bit so we don't get left in the dark for a long time.

Good to know, just to be on the safe side and to give you a heads up, there are rules against directing linking scanlations, (the translations can be talked about, but not linked) and such since they are taken to serious levels here. (Trust me, I watch plenty meet thier end not knowing this fact) So I'll try to discuss it with you else where.

It's exactly those standards that make them slow. I can certainly appreciate a desire for quality, but even then they're kind of slow. I mean, Volume 2 has been out since March or April or something and they still haven't finished it. I remember it clearly because I bought it on release and then waited for a while.

Edit: Also, as far as I know they aren't translating the bonus material. I mean, the bonus sketches and 4koma that are in the collected volumes. Or at least they're not releasing them in any obvious place (you'd expect the volume 1 bonus material at the end of chapter 5, for example).

It's nice that they're expanding on the human village with some actual named characters. Really, it's been around since the Windows series started and supposedly so important yet the only major named character from there so far was Akyu.

EDIT:
As a 2chan post pointed out, we finally have a character whose parents we can be sure about.

Marisa's been confirmed to have parents for a very very very long time, now. Unless you mean the relationship, tho IMHO it's somewhat obvious Marisa and her father have had a sort of falling out.

I'm pretty sure it was actually introduced in IN, when you fought Keine. If you look at the prologues for EoSD and PCB, they both talk about there being very few humans in Gensokyo and talk as if most human-youkai interaction occurs across the border. It wasn't until Keine decided to hide the human village that we got the idea that they had a sizable population center in Gensokyo.

Also, when was it considered important?

Yes, my emphasis was on the relationship. I spoke too soon on this issue, anyway.

So apparently a Japanese copy of the Necronomicon exists in Gensokyo.
It's written using kanji/hanzi/Chinese characters, but not in a language anyone understands.

Clarste is correct in terms of games. CoLA preceeded IN though, and by the time CoLA was written, there was definitely a sizeable human population in Gensokyo. Technically, "human villages" are indeed mentioned in ESoD and PCB's prologues. But both instances refer to human population outside of Gensokyo.

What's really important, is that you must understand that the Touhou universe didn't leap into the world fully grown with ESoD and Dolls of Pseudo Paradise in August, 2002. Quite the contrary, if you read ESoD documents and "Death of the Honest Men" carefully (admittedly hard to do given the state of their English translations), you'll see that the Touhou universe as we know it didn't exist back then. Gensokyo was just a hidden paradise of youkai, and Reimu kept watch on its border. She went to stop the scarlet mist, because if it spread to the outside, the humans would discover Gensokyo and destroy it. There was no such thing as super magical barrier. The core concept of Gensokyo is there, but the details are all missing.

A Gensokyo surrounded by a powerful border began to take shape with PCB. But the PCB Prologue Gensoukyou Fuudoki "Record of Land and Customs of Gensokyo", still described a Gensokyo very different from its current form. ZUN would eventually retcon the whole article by saying it has been greatly distorted by years of copying and intentional tampering.

The "Version 1.0" of Touhou universe, with all important features set in stone, was probably formed soon after PCB's release, and was revealed first through CoLA, then through IN, IaMP and Changeability of Strange Dream.

I'd call ESoD and "Death of the Honest Men" pre-Touhou universe, and PCB proto-Touhou universe.

Hey, I've written another stupid post on Forbidden Scrollery.

We don't really know where FS will be heading, so this can only serve as background knowledge at the moment.

It's easy to ask "where is the dividing line between Japanese culture and pan-East Asian culture". But the truth is, there isn't one. Japanese culture developed by taking in "outside" influences; without them, Japanese culture as we know it simply couldn't exist.

So what did Motoori Norinaga do? He was one of the scholars who sought to create an identity of Japan that's wholly unique, separate from outside Buddhist and Confucian influences. Like many cultural reformers in history, he tried to achieve his goal by claiming his innovations as a return to the roots. Shinto-Buddhist syncreticism was the prevailing religion of Japan, so he went back to a time before the syncreticism happened. From those early records, he developed a new theory of Shintoism, a lot of which, such as the concept of "four souls", are still often referenced today.

Motoori's work formed the basis to State Shintoism, the state religion and ideology of Imperial Japan. Mind you, Gensokyo was sealed during 1884-1885, the year in which all shrines were required to become state institutes, and Shinto priests required to become civil servants.

Motoori also invented the concept of mono-no-aware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_no_aware), said by later scholars to be the aesthetical value behind all Japanese art, as well as an essential component of the Japanese mind. One of his major works is Commentaries on the Kojiki, and you may remember that Kojiki was written by Hieda no Are, so Kosuzu and Akyuu knowing each other is quite the scholarly gag.

Needless to say, Motoori's "purely Japanese" Shintoism still displays lots of Confucian and Taoist influences.

Only if you don't consider the aspect of the fact that electric lamps may be functioning in the human village thanks to the power network that most likely had been established thanks to the Moriya Shrine, the kappa, and the Utusho creating a power soruce that I guess by now has reached the human village.

Still, they're probably a rare thing though, since most modern products like that don't make it to Gensokyo very easily. Though there's always the kappa. Just another example of Gensokyo slowly adopting some modern influences that would otherwise be kept away from it. And to think, the Moriya Shrine and most of youkai Mountain achieved this in 4 years.

As for what this thread is... It's BOTH! Mostly to discuss the manga in general though.

Pff, as if Reimu reads.

I don't think the attitude is faked. Her attitude throughout the chapter never changed, and it isn't like she hid anything from them. She is probably depending on Reimu for when something goes wrong though, I think she already knows she's going to start something. The book with butterflies coming out of it clearly is the hinting factor so far.

I view it as if she has a "sales smile" on whenever she's interacting with others. That doesn't necessarily mean she's hiding anything, but she's also faking her cheerfulness. You can see when she's reading the books that her true smile is a bit different.

Second, panel 3, I think this panel is supposed to show us Akyuu's reaction but I have no idea what her reaction is. Is she surprised? If so why? Also is she saying what's in the speech bubble? Third, panel 4, is my translation weird or is Akyuu growling. Mine says "GRR". Wha- Why? If she's surprised in panel 3 how is she now... angry to the point of growling?

By "page 1", you mean the first black & white page.

>Left margin
In Japanese manga magazines, the margins are always used for miscellaneous info. In this case, it has nothing to do with Touhou.

>Akyuu's reaction in Panel 3
Her surprise is... obvious?

>Panel 4
Akyuu is making a "Mmmm..." sound in the original Japanese. She's searching for words to say.

Maybe growling is a bit much, but the basic idea is that she's annoyed at Marisa for changing her tone. Marisa starts out by apologizing for bumping into her, but switches to "oh, it's just you" when she realizes who it is. No one likes being called "just you". The whole exchange implies that Marisa doesn't think she's worthy of respect. This is brought up again later in the chapter when Kosuzu does the same thing. The other translation put "Humph" there. The basic idea is that she's making an annoyed pouting sound.

That was a good chapter.  The art's really really cute.  I like Akyuu's medium-length hair and Reimu's cold weather boots.  Also I think this might be the first time we've seen Reimu without her hair loopies and ribbon in canon.  Has this happened before?

Did Marisa use Kisume's bucket to douse Reimu with water?  Reimu's face was pretty priceless there.

It looks like the smoke thing is currently possessing Reimu, like the kami did in Silent Sinner in Blue.  But Reimu didn't notice it, so maybe it's just hiding her in clothes.  I'd speculate that since she was so cold, she wanted to get warmed up, and having an anti-Cirno around/inside her seems like a good deal, right up until people think she's actually on fire, of course.

The three fairies were hiding (badly) behind some big leaves outside the shrine. They might just be conjuring the illusion of smoke to pull a prank. iirc there's not been anything but a visual of smoke, which would be completely realistic for Sunny Milk to pull off.

Kosuzu does make it sound like the smoke might actually be something, though. Of course... the fairies might have just been inspired by it and done their own little thing on the side. Heheh, troublesome buggers :3 Not impossible they were just watching on the sidelines with interest, though.

Also, I have no idea what all the japanese symbols around the smoke in some panels are supposed to mean D:

Incidentally, what would the sound of smoke be in English?

Merry Christmas! Even while you are busy for Christmas, and waiting for Comiket 83, don’t forget that we are getting both WaHH and FS this month, as spoilers for a new chapter of Forbidden Scrollery are already coming out.

To think about it a bit more seriously, the lamp is quite old-fashioned. If the human village’s electricity is brought in by Kanako, she would definitely try to also import modern technology. LED lamps are superior to light bulbs in every way, and even if, say, Gensokyo doesn’t yet have the capacity to produce LEDs, she would still import modern light bulbs rather than a 19th century model. Obsolete products drifting in is the natural order of Gensokyo, while Kanako's intention is to accelerate Gensokyo's technological progress.

It’s not very likely the electricity has anything to do with her work. Instead, I see it as ZUN staying true to what he said in one public talk a few years ago: Gensokyo has electricity.

Also, Akyu's had a working record player long before Subteranean Animism.

The thing about Akyuu is that she "seems to like FM synth music", which would not be possible to create in a pre-telecoms age, and even if somehow drifted in from the outside world, would not be possible to play without some steampunkish imagination.

Hey, it looks like Kosuzu might end up unleashing something that might actually be serious!  Although it'd be hilarious if it turned out to basically be a really ferocious acting Kogasa Tatara-ish youkai or so. :P

On page 15 Kosuzu has ears. Is that some kind of joke or is she a bake danuki in that interaction (because that would be really weird).

Also, Reimu wears two hats, consequences will never be the same.

animu gag

Man though Kosuzu either actually wants to summon this thing for a purpose or she's just really really dumb.

Or maybe she wants to summon the thing on purpose because she's dumb? :V

She's hissing like a cat. It's just to show what her reaction seems like to Reimu and Marisa. ...maybe I should have translated the sound effects in that panel.

Well, she did already say that even if she does summon something, Reimu can just take care of it. Which of course from a narrative perspective means that whatever she ends up ultimately  summoning will probably be way out of Reimu's league.

I figure she's just spoiled into extreme naivete by Gensokyo's current golden age, and possibly her own powers clouding her judgement or affecting her personality. Honestly, personality-wise, she seems more like a Touhou youkai than a human to me since she's so... capricious and not-serious. Sanae at least has the excuse of being from the outside world. I suppose to put it into perspective, Sanae's an anime fan who entered a world of anime while Kosuzu's an anime fan BORN into a world of anime. Assuming she's from the latest generation of Gensokyo after the spell card rules have been long established, I think Kosuzu's used to youkai who only play evil instead of actually are evil along with a shrine maiden that can just solve everything anyways, and thus it doesn't dawn on her that something seriously bad could happen.

I wonder what are the chances she will eventually get somebody killed.

I also wonder what are the chances this scenario happens and she cares not for that at all

Would be pretty fun to see a human antagonist for once, eh?

I say it's not unreasonable to expect a new human villager boss in HM: human village matters too much for the story to not employ their POVs, and since there's only one known human village danmaku fighter in Keine so far, at least another is needed, preferrably someone who opposes Keine's beliefs - the secret society from BAiJR, for instance.

The thing about Akyuu is that she "seems to like FM synth music", which would not be possible to create in a pre-telecoms age, and even if somehow drifted in from the outside world, would not be possible to play without some steampunkish imagination.
Or she could be listening to some special limited print run vinyl records of FM synth.

Perhaps somebody trying to establish an anarchy in the human village?  Would kind of sound like those silly villain archetypes "I WILL CONQUER THE ENTIRE VILLAGE" though hahaha.

But yeeah I suppose that we had plenty former-human-antagonists in the previous games.  And Yumemi.

To be precise, Miko's a saint, though she used to be human.

Anyway, we already have Yumemi as a human antagonist, unless you want one in the Windows series...

Thing about humans in Touhou is that if they get a special abillity or whatever else and it gets out of hand enough, they end up becoming youkai. Or mistakeable enough for one (see: Ichrin, Renko's commentary about Maribel, and various comments by people about Marisa and Sanae). Which is what I meant to imply with my comment about Kosuzu's power possibly causing her youkai-like personality.

Oh god, I would love if the story became a documentary chronicling Kosuzu's transformation into a youkai. I want Kosuzu to go through the rejection from her friends and family, changing eating habits, physical self-abuse, a Patchouli phase, and of course, concluding with her eating a human and having to fight her former idol, Reimu. Yup, this is going to be awesome.

FS has catapulted Mamizou up on my favorite Touhou character ranking. All you saw of her during 10D was a snarky old tanuki that was sort of just playing on the protag's naivety.

It's when she identifies with the biggest bibliophile in Gensokyo and ends up acting, and dressing like her to the point of pretending she has asthma.

Rather than respecting Patchouli, I'd expect her to see her as a rival. "You may have more books, but my books are better. Quality over quantity you pajama-wearing fool!" And then she sticks her tongue out cuz she's a kid.

Actually, it's very hard for me to imagine her having any respect for Patchouli whatsoever. She seems to look down on youkai as unimportant.

By this point in the story, being that she is turning into a youkai, she would have lost her own sense of identity, and so would be trying to cling on to any vestige of sensibility she could find. Inside, she still loves books but finds her old loves incompatible with the new life that's being thrust upon her. She sees Pathchouli as a role model, that even an unimportant creatures like a youkai can be a bibliophile.
