Title: MAGFest more like BESTFEST - February 18-21, 2016
Post by: triangles on November 29, 2015, 10:37:55 PM
It's that time of year again to START THE HYPE TRAIN CHOO CHOO (http://magfest.org/)
(unless you're like me and have been super hype for a while)

Main reason I'm starting the topic now is I have a registration group for my orchestra going and we miiiiight be a person or two short of meeting the minimum for me to add to the group by tomorrow evening for the $10 prereg discount (so $50).  If anyone still needs a badge please let me know!

Either way who else am I gonna see this year?  I'll be once again parked in the hallway having a :toot: with my sister and a sax/guitar player at random times (including drunk o'clock of course) but also going to be looking to do at least one small ensemble/chamber music set in the Jamspace with some of my orchestra members.  And one other thing that's really really cool but still pending but it'll hopefully pan out that I can tell you all to get your butts to  :V

I haven't actually registered yet, so if you need my registration to help you out, you've got it. Hit me up on IRC for any info you may need once I get home from rehearsal (8:30 PM-ish)

Fresh reminder that any outsiders who are looking for a room should let me know if they need somewhere to stay for the weekend. Triangles alerted me to the room block opening only a few hours after the hotel started making reservations available and we had reserved a total of 6 rooms shortly after that.

The bands and guests are starting to filter in! Time to scope them out and see how many concerts you'll go to this year!

Always going, always probably being an awkward mess trying to talk to any MotKers I run into there.

It begins a day after my birthday so it's extra special this time!

TWO AND A HALF WEEKS TO GO
HYPE INTENSIFYING

The band list is shaping up quite nicely, once the schedule comes out it'll be time to hammer out how disgustingly jampacked my weekend will become.

Also now that it's announced I can finally shamelessly self-promote A Thing I Am Doing - the pit orchestra for the Super Smash Opera (http://magfest.webhook.org/event/super-smash-opera/)!
it'd be super cool if we actually had the music at this point though because I'm faaaaaar from a professional :toot:-cian
I believe it's going to be Friday afternoon, and you all better get your butts over there to see it.

Got 8 more duets this year and 2-3 more trios for hallway jams oh bb I still gotta learn all that music too aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

:toot: :toot: :toot: tootician. Friday it is.

At this point I will be most hype for
everyone getting into their rooms armed with plenty of room keys and settling in after all the payments have been submitted.

Super Soul Bros. and Bit Brigade are making a return! Get your earplugs ready!

Earplugs or not, Edible you better not be patient zero for MAGlaria again and get me sick :(

:toot: :toot: :toot: tootician. Friday it is.
Friday 1pm actually!  We're having dress rehearsal 8-10am before the prior panels start so no drunk o'clock shenanigans Thursday for us.
Every day that we don't get the music
that we were supposed to get the first week of January
another little part of my heart turns to sheer panic over my rapidly decreasing faith in my ability to play this stuff which could be chock full of what I lovingly dub "flute shit" for all I know ooof.

Well whatever they decided to accept someone who wrote on the application under professional experience "I know what most of the buttons on a clarinet do" that's the risk they take if I don't get music well in advance :colbert:

I wish i could go, yet school, age, location, budget and many more stop me. Such music. Much instruments. Wow.
And the Inti Creates sound crew is going to be there too right ? Gunvolt and Megaman Zero and ZX series. I'm glad i got to know about this from GDQs (Games Done Quick).

Preliminary schedule is up! (http://schedule.magfest.org/)
And I'm going to cry because one of my top priority concerts is at the same time as the thing I'm performing at which ~still no music~  >:( well hopefully things will get changed magfest gods pls

There's a lot of cool stuff going down on Friday. Also the panels I would like to see perfectly match up with the 5/6 concerts I want to go to.

It has already been postulated that heavily investing in the Smash Opera may be difficult, stressful, and time consuming based on what little I know of what it is, the effort required to successfully participate and contribute, and how mandatory your attendance may be. Weigh your options wisely.

I dunno. You already got your toots going on elsewhere and my admittedly vague understanding is that this Smash bunch should've had it's act together a month ago. It may not be worth it to go nuts over this.

Clearly I should have followed this advice and dumped like 4 of 6 hotel rooms on some other chumps but what do I know?

Keiji Inafune, designer/producer of pretty much the entire Mega Man series, will also be a guest. They pulled this outta nowhere! I had to beg my kid brother to check and see if we've still got a dusty old copy of 2 sitting in a shoebox in a closet back home.

In terms of time I have to prepare at least. This year we're being all pro biscuits and proper with our music with binders and a listing people can request from.  Here's a sneak peek at some of our new tunes, but I still gotta perfect the bulk of it.

(except the smash opera stuff at this point I'm just going to phone it in on the principle of the thing)  at least Super Soul Bros got moved to Friday 3pm so I can still see them I'd have totally noped out of smash opera after the whole mess it's been if it was a conflict as originally scheduled let me tell you.

Title: Re: MAGFest more like BESTFEST - February 18-21, 2016
Post by: triangles on February 14, 2016, 09:51:35 PM
Oh the opera singers are gonna be fine and there's enough professional musicians and a piano backing to carry. The music's also not terribly hard minus a few bullshit pieces (looking at you, Modern Major General) so I can technically play most of it but I would feel waaaaay better performing it had we gotten the music in early January as promised  instead of three days ago.

I still recommend going if you didn't catch it last year they have some amazing singers,  but it's disappointing that the orchestral backing is going to be at a lower quality than it really could have been.  The organizers bit off more than they could chew.  Again there are a number of professional musicians but there's gotta be a decent number of people like me who aren't ;_;

Our duets and trios on the other hand are gonna be pretty sweet got pretty much all of them from last year and another ten new ones to bust out.

As for gatherings ??? Smash opera is at 1pm tomorrow and at 3pm is Soul Bros which is not to  be missed. There wasn't much on my must do list tonight,  I'll be at one of the designated jam spots later tonight with my sister and our sax buddy which I'll let you all know when /where we go or I can text people .  Maybe this afternoon too?

Ouch.  Somehow I am not surprised though; autographs and events featuring the autographer often run into conflict, dont they?

Hopefully he enjoyed himself and comes back again though as you said.

Meanwhile I left the gaming areas uh...earlier than I realized and find myself in the concert hall like ten minutes early.  Whoooops.  Oh well, should be ok. Any fellow meidos who find me, feel free to say hi I suppose?  *shrug*

I wish I had more stamina and wasn't zonked zzzz ded by 10 last night. I think the concerts and programming was on a whole stronger last year but I had oodles of fun.  I do unfortunately have to take my clarinet to the shop tomorrow to get some pads replaced but made it through the bulk of things smoothly.

I was quite saddened by no Protomen and especially by no Megas, bit it was good anyway as usual.

Definitely got my mileage out of last night though, capping it off with watching a friend of mine beat Metroid: Zero Mission at like 4:30am then going to sleep about an hour later whoooops...only to get up at 9 to get ready for the flight back to the wilderness. WORTH IT.

Before that I also watched some Initial D playing and that was cool,  i think one of ours was playing but Im not sure.

There were a number of 2hu and 2hu accessories on The D this weekend, including a surprise guest appearance by Pixel's father.

My contribution to the Metroid Marathon was the first 90 minutes or so of Other M, in which I was able to get to the research facility at the end of the first romp through Sector 1 whilst getting every obtainable item along the way. I HELPED \o/

That's ok, it'll be back next year!  For a lot of you, time to get ready for Anime Boston.  For me, more like "time to prepare for Otakon" because AB is nooot viable this year due to trying to save up to get out of PA and back to NJ this summer or so but anyway.

AB is sadly a no-go for me, work picks up for me and we're extra busy over Easter anyway. Otakon might happen, it depends on how my funding is going because I'm moving out in May.

For those of you who missed it, I have a recording of us playing Pokemon Center theme (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbul7ibrZaKhAjTftPPmWvw)!  It's a bit of a comedy of errors as the violinist was sightreading and... well, you'll see.  But I wanted to get something uploaded so I can start advertising.  We were aiming to do this after last MAGFest but perfect was the enemy of good enough and now we're just going to :yolo: and record with a cellphone.

I recommend subscribing since we'll have actual stuff that was rehearsed quite a bit, in addition to some longer pieces that we didn't get to play at the con before the MAGPOLICE shut us down for "multiple noise complaints" which those of you who saw us or even watch the video can tell was a load of crap.
