Title: AnimeBoston 2012: Fantastic times with Mizuki Hitoshi-san!
Post by: Kilgamayan on January 22, 2012, 03:19:29 AM
Update 3/11/12: We've hit our goal! thank you all so much!

AnimeBoston 2012, in addition to being the generally awesome con it always is, is going to be super special for Touhou fans! In addition to what will assuredly be an even bigger turnout than last year's already impressive Touhou showing, we should be seeing not one, but two potential Touhou guests!

The first is the person referenced in the thread topic. A few months ago, several of us in #conmeido got together, formulated the idea for bringing a Touhou guest to America, dredging up the courage to be willing to sponsor said guest should we not be able to get a con to sponsor them for us, and after a quick e-mail exchange with our first choice, we already had someone willing to visit. Having kept this contained to #conmeido until today, it is with great pleasure I announce that Hitoshi Mizuki, mangaka and main character of Hang in There, Kogasa-san!, has agreed to come to America and attend a convention! Our group generally agreed on AnimeBoston after other potential opportunities fell through, and so we begin the proper planning of getting him a plane ticket and a room.

Now, this stuff is obviously not cheap, and does not include whatever else he'll need while here (con badge, at the very least). Given this, we are currently planning to raise $2500 in order to safely get him over here with a comfortable cushion should something go amiss. We will try to cover as much of that as we can, but that's a fair sum of money, so we turn to you, other AnimeBoston attendees. If you would like to help us out, we will gladly take whatever you are willing and able to donate (osaise~n~). See the next post for the proper information; Gandalph will be covering the plane ticket, so all PayPal donations should be funneled to him. (I'll be covering the room and may nick a tiny bit of comp off of his collective depending on how much we can raise.) Make sure to send any donation as a Gift, since this is, after all, a gift to Hitoshi (also to ensure you avoid PayPal fees).

Our second potential guest at least won't require our direct assistance. After being informed that Mizuki-san was very likely to be at AnimeBoston, LeoModesto, operator of and artist for the Ask Udonge tumblr account, has become very interested in attending as well! While this is not a thing set in stone, AnimeBoston is one of the four conventions on his recent list of places he'd like to go, and assuming Mizuki-san shows, I suspect he'll choose AB. (He was rather excited on Steam and IRC, at least!) Unfortunately, this isn't going to work out this year, due to questionable interview practices by the US consulate in Brazil. We hope to have Leo next year, though!

Thank you for reading! The braying and neighing of AnimeBarnyard animals follows.

Hey there youse gaiz!

I'll keep updated totals of the current collection here. Please send moneys to g4nd41ph@gmail.com to pledge. If you want me to post your name, then please put it in the payment note. Otherwise, I'll put you down as an anonymous donor. PLEASE REMEMBER TO MARK THE PAYMENT AS A GIFT, FIRST BECAUSE IT IS, AND SECOND BECAUSE PAYPAL DOESN'T CHARGE FEES FOR GIFT TRANSACTIONS. ALSO, PAY WITH A BANK ACCOUNT INSTEAD OF A CREDIT CARD IF YOU CAN, BECAUSE THAT AVOIDS CREDIT CARD FEES.

So yeah, help us help you. Sending Mizuki Hitoshi to the US is not cheap, but with a community effort, it can be done with a minimum impact to our wallets and offer maximum impact directly to the fun and the awesome.

CURRENT TOTAL: $5000
REMAINING TO GOAL: -$2500

████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

As the first donor, I'll put down Kilgamayan, who's covering the cost of the hotel at $600.
I got $50 from Zakenna this morning, 1/23. Thank You!
I got $25 from labeth this morning, 1/23. Thank You!
I got $250 from Reddyne this evening, 1/23. Thank You!
I got $250 from -K- this evening, 1/23. Thank You!
I got $50 from Sophilia this evening, 1/26. Thank You!
I got $100 from Murein this morning, 1/29. Thank You!
I got $100 from Genichiro this evening, 2/15. Thank You!
I got $650 from anonymous this morning, 2/16. Thank You!

I got $31.41 from UncertainKitten this evening, 2/19. Thank You! But why the weird amount?
I got another $25 from Murein this evening, 2/19. Thank You!
I just got $2500 from Nat Tea/Choja. We are currently discussing what we are going to do with this extra money. Stay posted here for more information.

Notice how the ENTIRE BAR IS GREEN?! AWWWW YEAH CHECK THAT OUT! HITOSHI IS ON HIS WAY! WE ARE $%#* AWESOME!

Should I? I hesitated making this more important than any of the previous con threads because it's basically only applicable to those attending, even with the extra stuff involved. I've actually already gotten a pledge (to be fulfilled later) from someone that, as far as I know, isn't even going, which makes me feel kinda bad. :C

I guess I'll do it if a staff member that isn't going to AB approves it, but I don't think I'm in a proper position to make that kind of judgment.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate you guys?
Because I'm damn right jealous right now of anyone who is going because:
A) I'm in England! ><
B) I LOVE Hitoshi & Hang in there Kogasa-san!
C) I LOVE Ask Udonge!

I'll donate for you guys at the very least. Just know that I'm going to be all paru-paru for, like, EVER!!!

And this is why you should have always ask MotK's true 1% when this stuff happens. Anyway I hearts Hitoshi so sure why not. I could probably pump out 1.8k if I get my sister to Paypal it over, but may I ask when the deadline is? I have other important things that my money has to go to, too.

And that 1.8k will come out from my anime con allowance that I have been saving for november.  ;_;

Wow. Well. Um.

To be honest, I'd kinda rather you spend that much money on yourself so you can get here and enjoy the convention with everyone else.

But if you really can't come, then we certainly won't turn the offer down.

Enjoy the con without me. I would be deathly excited if I could go, but, parents. Anyway, don't get your hopes that high up. Best case scenario is I pay at least 1k, but at worse im going to have to ship Dormio 100$ to pay pal over.

Empathsizing this because I have made many people excited but then my plans crash and burn and they rage even though I tried.

Well you'll never know. Perhaps some people will change their minds and attend because such things probably happen once in a life time (unless you decide to visit Ket/Reitaisai yourself sometime). Either way it is always news-worthy to see such things being planned and executed. Even if the idea would be scrapped, it still remains nice.

As far as I know, there are currently no plans to bring Sanaewife over. Only Hitoshi has been invited so far and we are budgeting under the assumption of bringing one person.

If we happen to raise the necessary funding, then we will probably invite her over as well. Either her or Marisafriend.

Um...that would defeat the purpose given they're looking for a specific Japanese guest with relevance to the Touhou community. I'm...not sure I even understand why you think this would be an option.

Update on AB shenangans!

- It does indeed appear that Leo will be unable to attend, due to *ahem* questionable interview methods employed by the US consulate during the visa application process. My sympathies go out to Leo, as well as everyone that was looking forward to meeting him.

- In brighter news, the Hitoshi Mizuki train keeps rolling along. His plane ticket has been officially purchased! All that needs to happen now is for AnimeBoston to actually come.

- The Touhou panel has been approved, because Lou is a bro that has always done good by us. We are tentatively scheduled for Friday, 6:30 PM in Panels 202. The panel will run for its standard AnimeBoston 2 hours, though it's obviously going to be run a bit differently this year, given who will be attending.

I know Katsucon is around the corner for a few of you, but Gandalph still whatever donations he can get! Whatever can be spared, we will be very grateful to have it!

Okay, money issues have hit me stupidly; so donating stuff to the cause is going to be a little hard...
However, I have my own way around this.

Since I can't actually be there, I'm going to do the one thing I've sort of been getting a reputation for...
I'm going to send a parcel!

If anyone who is going to the con would be willing to give me their address, (obviously PM it) then I'll send a small parcel to you with items inside for the one and only Hitoshi... With possibly an item for SanaeWife too; because I aim to please everyone! XD

So yeah, if anyone would be nice enough to that, I'd be very happy; since it's pretty much the only thing I can do sitting here in England. ><

Hello,

This email is to let you know that your panel titled:

Slammine Boston: The Charles Barkley Experience

has been denied for Anime Boston 2012 due to being off-topic. Sorry. :(

This issue of where to draw the line on the type of content we allow
into Anime Boston is a grey area. Despite this, we want to stay as
focused on one area of culture as much as we can.  Specifically, based
on our mission statement, we?re focusing on Japanese Animation, the
Japanese language, and areas that it has influenced -- so long as they
can be tied back into those core focus areas.

We already have a number of crossover events to allow Anime fans to
enjoy other activities that fall outside of strictly Anime and
Japanese culture.  For example our informal dances, video game room,
live gaming track, and blood drive. While these events are not
strictly focused on Japanese animation and culture, we ask them to try
to tie in with the convention whenever possible.

Just for some information for you -- in 2011 we received requests for
roughly 209 hours of panel programming from the Anime Boston
community.  Of those 209 hours, only 54 hours were waitlisted or
denied. This shows that we accept the majority of panel requests
(about 80%) that are submitted.  Of those that we waitlist or deny,
you?ll find that there is a mix of panels that follow our mission
statement versus those that do not. If we find that more and more
panels are being submitted outside of our mission statement, we may
choose to broaden our definition to some degree.

If you would like to get a better idea as to how our panels are
selected, please refer to the following thread on the Anime Boston
forums: http://forums.animeboston.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13865

If we were to allow panels popular in our sub-culture that fall
outside of Anime and Japanese culture, we feel that our message
wouldn't be as strong, and we wouldn't have as strong and focused a
community.  Many of Anime Boston's programming staff, myself included,
also have a love of interests outside of Anime that a lot of us seem
to have in common. However, upon our inception as an organization back
in 2002, the founders of Anime Boston came to consensus that we
wouldn't allow our convention to get diluted and unfocused, and
decided to limit the scope of the content.  The current executive
staff of Anime Boston, and many of our rank-and-file staff have
continued to support this position.

Thank you for understanding.

Allright, Mizuki Hitoshi says that he'll be bringing a few doujins along with him to buy and get autographed and stuff, but not too many. He also regrets having to leave Sanaewife at home and hopes there's enough money that she can come next time too.

Believe me, we regret leaving her at home too. But it would've required an extra $1700 (minimum) that we just weren't getting.

Hopefully we will have that much available next year.

Wow, the Touhou panel is going to have Hitoshi Mizuki? Sounds like a must-visit to me!

Despite how much I want to go, I still have some planning to do since I have a job now so I need to do that that so I don't get fired (that'd be terrible!!). My mother already agreed to let me go as long as I think of the job first before the convention, so if the job says no, I'm out.

Anyways, you guys seem like you have the panel handled fairly well. Have fun!

Well terrible news, my University sponsored trip has been canceled so I guess I can't go.

Ah well, I never got a chance to make a Medicine cosplay anyway.

This is awesome!!!!
I have always been a fan of Hitoshi Mizuki comic
I will definitely leave my AA space for seeing the Touhou panel!!!
a question though,
what are you gonna do with the money? cuz 2500 is a lot lol

That's been discussed loosely. We have two ideas and wish to discuss them with the donor before we make a decision.

Purchase meat. Lots of meat for Hitoshi.

AFAIK, that is the money for the hotel and his plane ticket you know. It will vaporize within seconds.

Edit:  Ninja'd by Kilgapai.

Believe me, we regret leaving her at home too. But it would've required an extra $1700 (minimum) that we just weren't getting.

Uh... you guys said that the amount total in donations on the other page as $5000, right? So you could use some of those extra donations to bring Sanaewife with. (y'know, if those two options you are discussing with Choja with don't work out.)

well too bad kilgamayan you're still keeping the donation

trusting friends over a bank to hold money that's pretty high on the scale of stupid right there choja

what idiot takes back donations that's like saying "oh no i did something with good intentions i better take that back!!"[

Okay, I was able to actually find a way to get to Boston and find a place to stay, so I will actually be coming next week! Unfortunately, I couldn't get a Medicine Cosplay ready in time, and if I'm going to be doing my Jin Kisaragi Cosplay I'll need to get my hair cut/re-dyed this weekend. If I can't get that done, I'll probably be wearing  my rabbit-eared fleece hat from ComicCon and ahdunnuh, I'll just be looking for you all and probably awkwardly asking every Touhou cosplayer if they're on this site. :V

I really do hope you guys have a lot of fun! And enjoy the company of Hitoshi for as long as you can~ XD
Again, thanks to Gandalph for allowing me to send a package over; it certainly made my day when you told me you received it. Now to wait for the reaction of Kogasa-san; hehe~

The Perfect Art Class was great - watched it via livestream though I would've liked to meet ya all in person for that (tried to via IRC though).

Props to Maullar as always for great illustrations (and lots of QBs), UK for being the willing model
and bondage test subject
, as well as to Hitoshi for stopping by and saying hi during the stream!

I think our multiple groups and individual/duo travelers could use better coordination, though. Perhaps for stuff after the Touhou panel I guess ^^;;

EDIT: By chance, did any of you wear a Rumia (or what seems like her) cosplay during pre-registration? Passed by one today after getting my AB badge - should've stopped and asked in retrospect :V

I know I haven't said anything, but I do want to say congratulations to you guys for managing to rake in the money needed to bring Mizuki Hitoshi over to the US to attend Anime Boston.

I'm personally watching this thread to see how everything plays out since I'm personally wonder how Hitoshi himself will see his trip to the US. And how it'll be represented in the comics.

My personal prediction for Hitoshi's AB comics: Key members of the MotK crew will likely be personified at the Taoist crew of 10D. The rally and desire to bring donations to get him here, the aquarium, the bondage, and that's only the beginning. It simply reeks of Taoist conspriacy!

(to be honest, though, it could go in many directions it's too early to tell or even perdict, but will be amusing non the less)

Also, seeing him bow down to Suwako was just perfect; manga scenes based on real-life moments becoming reality again. XD

And because I keep hammering my own head... has he received my gift? I mean... I just want to know if he has it yet.
Thanks guys; and by the looks of it, you're really enjoying yourselves. Hitoshi looks happy; so that's what counts! ^^

Tamashii Kanjou, what was your gift again?

In the white package was...

A small blue plush.
A big penguin plush.
A red slip with something inside.
A card.

I think that should do. Ring any bells? ^^

Tamashii Kanjou: Gift-giving is going to be a Sunday thing, near as I can tell.

Vic: He's been a fucking champ this whole weekend, including soloing the interpretation for the panel. I want to cover his dinner at Eagle's Deli, if nothing else.

Helecopter: He'll be heading home with two penguin plushies, since the Thursday crew picked one up for him at the aquarium.

Currently at Eagle's Deli. Genichiro ordered the main challenge and finished the 5 pounds of burger with 2 pounds of cheese and bacon topping before surrendering to the 5 pounds of fries.

Mizuki-san Tweeted a picture of the fries. The reactions were almost instant.

That particular challenge is $59.99. I believe you get $100 for finishing it in an hour. No one's done it yet. No one ever will, most likely.

There is nothing special on tap for tomorrow.

Vic: I didn't, but I didn't pay attention to anything anyone else ate.

I didn't even finish my meal. I wasn't very hungry.

Suikama: Not at all. I doubt even professional eaters could take it down. Keep in mind that it's twelve fucking pounds of food. Forget the hour limit on the money, good luck downing all of it in one visit at all.

Unrelated to Mizuki-san stuff: Cops are swarming all over the place. There was a riotish thing at the rave, which has since been shut down, and the police are ziptie-cuff-arresting absolutely anyone they can get their hands on.

Our main group is safe in our rooms, but friends of friends are currently unaccounted for. Here's hoping they come back safely.

EDIT: Scratch that, I just realized that E-Mouse is also unaccounted for. He's been missing for a while, before this all started, but it's still quite worrying. (Not that him missing before wasn't generically worrying.)

EDIT 2: Scratch THAT, E-Mouse is accounted for.

EDIT 3: Friends of friends are now accounted for. We're gonna wait a while to see when they can go back to their room.

*Crashing in*
I just had a sunday morning idea; What about introducing Kogasa-chan (if he's still there) to the Touhou things that we made ourselves.
Such as fanart, ZUN remixes, and even Dan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-7Xe-nQehA)ma (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iivVoqUO3_0)ku (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAJaJj362MM)fu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6VREiFzZ3c) games.
It'd be nice to hear what the Japanese think of our own Touhou projects. And it can be great comic bait too.

It was awesome when... everything really haha. Love the drawing Hitoshi drew for me on the back of my badge thing. And the burger adventure. And the panel and photoshoots.

I can't wait for next year's.

Phew, what a blast this convention was! I felt so sore-thumb showing up with no cosplay Friday and my half-missing Jin cosplay Saturday but the whole thing was amazing.  On Friday and Saturday I hung around with Nue and Rinnousuke, and finished Sunday off hanging around the MotK staff. Su-San is just the absolute nicest person to be around, and the rest of the staff was wonderful as well. I walked away with a Reimu plushie, Aya key chain, posters, doujins, and a very nice Reimu Nendoroid, got Hitoshi's autograph (twice actually, do to my clumsiness.), and had the surreal experience of watching Hitoshi play MoF one seat over from playing PoFV myself. The entire weekend was an incredible experience and I wholly suggest that everyone give AB a chance when you can.

Oh and a 5 foot halogen tube fell less than a foot past me, so, aside from that near-death or at least near-serious-injury experience, the convention was absolutely amazing.

Drugs, Yukari, Moriya shrine, templates, etc.

On an unrelated note,  man I really want to make a costume like right now for some reason. Or even two, because I really want to make a Medicine, but the Nue et al. are planning a SDM group, so Meiling is also on the table.

lolwut. May have been stored up there for some reason and fell off. Still doesn't make any sense :V
Even if you were lucky, that would have still freaked me out.

Last thing I need right now is Yukari trying to drop like stop signs on my head.

Still had fun sparring with Medicine, though  ;)

Same here, haha. Possibly a Nitori mixed with a few elements from Engie, so it works in both PAX and AB. :V

Probably will be uploading my pics (mostly from the Saturday photo op and restaurant) on Tuesday.

Though I did finally manage to get my brother to see you again after the panel, so that's a plus, lol.

It just occurred to me that I asked *you* about the SAT.

Sorry about that. :derp:

Definitely was :D

In the meantime....
Not surprisingly, there was a noticeable absence of any Touhou in PAX. I took a quick attempt to fix that at the Fangamer booth:

(http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc379/apr0396/ab_2012/th_IMG_0381.jpg) (http://s1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc379/apr0396/ab_2012/?action=view&current=IMG_0381.jpg)

'What about Touhou?' is what it says, roughly. The last character is incorrect (should be 은, not 는), but I didn't notice the mistake until later :derp:.

Hooo man, that was an awesome weekend; I'd do that again in a heartbeat.  Wellp, as requested, I tried to take as much video as I could.  Unfortunately, my laptop's display went bonkers between me shutting it down on Wednesday night and trying to boot it up on Thursday (a fact made twice as painful as it was supposed to be the panel laptop, yerghimble).  Unfortunately this means that it's taking a little bit longer to pull all my vids off the SDHC cards my camera takes and get them onto external HDD to upload, but I'm beginning the uploads soon.  Stay tuned as usual!

I heard this was a pretty cool event.

But really, it was a real good time. An amazing time, as every AB tends to be. Whenever I get around to it, I'll throw some pictures up. Nothing too interesting, but a little bit of redundancy never hurt anyone. A bit of a shame that Hendane's AB stock got eclipsed by the Sakuracon stock, but I suppose my wallet is thankful. In the game room, I only really had the time to sit down at the Touhou tables and play a little bit of PoDD. (the allure of jubeat and IIDX is far too strong for my weak will, please forgive me!) As expected, hanging out in the karaoke room and going out to eat with Mizuki-san was awesome.

A+++++ would buy from again

NOTE: Okay seriously, mobile Photobucket sucks. Can't zoom in on these pics, and the "View Full Website" link just takes you to their main page. aaaargh

Oh fine, I'll wax mushy too.

I won't say y'all are my family or anything like that--after all, I would not be comfortable with you guys possessing my baby pictures--but AB is probably the one thing I look most forward to every year. A necessary oasis from the straight-laced world of law school, where everything you want to say is vetted and second-guessed and sanitized in your mind before you even say it. I love my friends in my normal life, don't get me wrong, but around you guys, every part of my life--from the law, to the bondage, to the slamming--can just hang loose.

Miss you guys already. Currently reevaluating the costs and benefits of flying out for some future con.

The panel was good fun and getting the chance to have Hitoshi there was awesome. Also kind of new to MotK, so I'll try to post more frequently here. Since it hasn't really been brought up all that much yet, I'd like to cover something in particular. In the end, we were bringing someone who we didn't know firsthand to the US for some 4 days' worth of fun and excitement with which he wasn't entirely familiar. Still, Mizuki-san proved to be friendly, sociable, polite, patient, understanding, open-minded, amicable, appreciative, generous, good humored, a good sport, and is indeed quite experienced with the about the whole anime/manga/video game scene to boot. We really couldn't ask anything more from a guest. It allowed the entire weekend to go off without a hitch. He's also well-spoken and articulate, which allowed our dogged translator to easily turn over any information. It also allowed anyone with knowledge of the language to pick up on the conversation.

Story time ahead filled with notable events and such will be for later when I have more writing time. Ugh. I miss the people already, too.

Edit: My work inbox contains more than 300 messages. Back to reality!

Was pretty damn tired but that's about it. Didn't help that I slept only 4 1/2 hours overnight to catch my plane, though I added 3 hours to that on-board and upon arrival.

Better eat up on fruit, vegetables, and vitamins to offset this easily.

I wonder if I can bribe Benny into snagging the Touhou panel at next year's ACen. I would feel a lot less bad about inviting guests to the con then, with someone from MotK behind the wheel.

It probably wouldn't be very realistic to expect this kind of thing to happen again, but I can dream. ;-;

Whew, back home after a train ride that took entirely too long. If I had to choose between catching the sickness or spending almost 24 hours for all my train rides, I'd definitely go with the latter. I don't know what it is that I do, but my immune system seems to just not care about anything.

I really should have taken more photos of us eating or sitting around the karaoke room. Lord knows there was a lot of both of those. (On that note, the karaoke room was a bit of a mess. Occasional equipment failures, excessive setup time, and a strange insistence on using YouTube over slow phone internet for some songs even if the singer had it on their own device)

Now waiting watching warmly for the story arc that will unfold at the hands of Mizuki-san.

UncertainKitten wins the Best Mizuki-san Autograph Award, hands down.

Went to work straight after landing in the airport from Anime Boston so I was sort of dead and stuff after work. Got a cold the next day but that's nothing out of the ordinary.

Also remind me never to drink any alcohol ever again, I think I have a tolerance of zero or something. Maybe wine won't hurt as bad but that's not a convention kind of drink.

I have developed something in the way of a post-nasal drip, but there's no accompanying symptoms, which doesn't tell me much based on what the others have had. It really is tough to contain a disease in such an environment and any effort the sicklings went through to contain the con endemic are appreciated since some people seem to have made it through. It might reach a point where it's easier to count the number of people who didn't develop some sort of sickness, though.
also i feel bad because we were going to visit the artists' alley and then we didn't. or i didn't, unfortunately.
Whoah, you missed out, and I'm not one to throw such wording about. There were a number of booths with great and creative bits of artwork in there, including several booths selling Touhou-related stuff. I got a few real nice things, plus I found out later that one of the people in the AA was the artist for the Touhou wallscrolls in the DD. Two of those will be going up on my wall shortly in addition to other things. Go ahead and give it a look the next con you go to.

you got shit-faced from the brandy? it probably would have taken the entire bottle that Mauller brought to get me as drunk as the rum I had did.

to illustrate how terrible my resistance to alcohol is, it was just ONE shot that made me wonky. i'm the greatest.

I remember us going to the Artists' Alley on Sunday to see them closed (opens at 10, we were there like 8:45 or something?) then after the photoshoot when we had free time i just went to dealers' hall to purchase Tanto Cuore and then sat around in the hotel room

Man, I bet all the Japanese are reading our posts here and thinking "How did Hitoshi survive with all these crazy people!? They're all so weird!!" but that is me being awkward.

My symapthies to all who got sick in some capacity. Especially since I shared a bed for three nights with someone that came to the con sick, I didn't eat a whole lot, spent the entire weekend high-fiving strangers on the escalators, and have come into work on less than 6 hours of sleep both days this week and I'm still going strong. <_<;

Zakenna: Choja got shitfaced Thursday night.
I just lost my voice mostly. Mom calls me every day at noon and today I had to ignore it and text her "yeah mom I can't talk can you text this time?"  :X

I'll be okay though! Drinking lots of warm tea.

... I miss everyone. :<

Ah yes right here the introduction speech of Mizukisan starts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRIeuQ504FU&feature=bf_next&list=PL3970F5FB9B084518&lf=plpp_video#t=8m39sl), and after that the Q&A.

Maybe the people there can point out the other most interesting parts because I was seeking for this part in particular.

Edit: Forgot to add in my previous post, had 1 minor complaint about the Q&A, due to the quality of the sound it would've been nice to hear the question being repeated through the microphone, because half of the time it was impossible to hear what was being asked. But oh well.

Which Chinese Tea arrange is the one playing before the start of the panel?

Also whoever decided to do the "9... is the number of Ran's tails!" thing is a good person.
I think you guys spent a bit too much time explaining the storylines of the official print works. Personally, for a panel with (surprisingly, this year) a bunch of new people, you should have expanded a bit more on the derivative works. Despite me absolutely loving them, you have to admit that explaining them to new people is even more boring than explaining the silly stories in the games themselves.

Yup. I picked it because it's a solid arrange and suits the mood for "panelists are preparing".
Also whoever decided to do the "9... is the number of Ran's tails!" thing is a good person.
Kilga put that in for the Otakon panel last year. Considering it's memetic implications (and this time my attire), it fits pretty well.

Point taken. We've got things into a nice framework, but not a science yet, and as such parts of the panel are too short or too long and it's difficult to nail down the amount of time that should be spent on several talking points. It's also difficult to balance things considering there are some people that have been involved with Touhou for 5+ years and have come to every panel, and then there are the people who have no clue as to what we're talking about. For now the excuse I have is that hitting every last high note of a series with as much material to it as Touhou in the most precise time frame necessary to properly cover it is not so easy.

Edit: As an addendum, I'd also like to say that I'm still just not used to being in front of an audience despite how many times I've done this. I'm better than I used to be, but I still have a long way to go before I can talk as easily as I can on-on-one, and as such have a hard time conveying what I want to say and doing so in my typical jocund fashion.

The Kanako Itou concert and panel was what I originally came for. Mizuki-san's guest appearance was a surprise when I heard about it. The photo shoot was a ball too.

Definitely good game to who I believe was Red(?) and anyone else playing with the PSP controller in the game room Saturday night.

Okay folks, sorry about the lack of updates recently; work has been hectic to say the least and my time at home was mostly spent eating and complain about conplague.  Anyway, by now, we have the tour of boston/aquarium, our entry to the hotel, the very beginning of the friday photoshoot (I derped here and skipped a folder of upload, that's going up next), and, as a special treat, video of Mizuki-san drawing the 500th strip!  Finally (at least for the moment), the panel is up, and in said panel, a Q&A session with Mizuki Hitoshi!  Anyway, enjoy, and more to come!

EDIT: Okay, friday photoshoot added and reorganized.  Link is http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3970F5FB9B084518 for those that missed it earlier.

I confess my unrepentant stupidity for not having thought of Sola, our translator, as being a perfect fit for a character who echoes others. I was trying to remember if she had made it in the comic for some time now though.

Edit: 1000 views in half an hour?! Honestly, I had no idea.

Hyper? Coffee? I had gotten up 3.5 hours earlier at about 4 am and didn't really have much in the way of breakfast in me at the time. I was ready to crash by midnight that night.

AAAAAAND FINALLY DONE.  I can not believe how long that took to go through and label everything (just in time too, as Hang in there Kogasa-san is starting the Boston section of the arc).  For those of you that haven't looked yet, Anime Boston 2012, freshly labeled and described can be found at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3970F5FB9B084518

Edit: 1000 views in half an hour?! Honestly, I had no idea.

Yeah, you're telling me.

D-d-d-double edit: We all met him as a group of four, so he seems to be introducing us one at a time. This means that it's either Murein's or my head on the chopping block tomorrow.

Hooo boy, now I'm getting nervous.

Mizuki confirmed this in his comment on his pixiv page:

Quote
There were four people who came to meet me, but if I depicted them all, then the joke would get diffused and it'd become hard to draw, so I figured I'd condense them down to two for a bit. Sorry (to a certain image board (^^;) ).

So sorry to hear that but I guess Mizuki has his reasons so condense it to 2 people.

Yeesh, you greet the guy at the airport, lead him all around Boston during a VERY full day, give him a hotel room, bid him good morning every morning, share several meals with him, play a round of Hisoutensoku with him, give him a spot in your tails, and bid him farewell by quoting a character that hurls himself from the top of his palace at the center of the city he created to avoid dying at the hands of his rival as his big exit and you're summarily forgotten.

Sounds like an allegory of how relationships in my life have gone. (?・ω・`)  (?・ω・`)  (?・ω・`)

I suppose I should have considered this possibility sooner, what with a decent number of people getting worked up over the idea of possibly appearing.

Obviously, it would be nice if we all got to show up at least once, but I imagine that's not going to happen. To any given person that never appears, though, just remember that you made out a hell of a lot better than everyone that couldn't even attend the convention.

Truly, the crowd was so large that it'll be a wonder if he remembers everyone, let alone include us in the strip in some fashion. Also, if he takes up 25 characters for one arc, how much is that going to limit him for other people he introduces?

"We've a full day before the con! Whatcha wanna do?"
"Breakfast."
This is the droid we're looking for.
Not much, he reuses characters on a fairly regular basis
Sure, but they're primarily one-shot characters. They can pop up again with a different occupation when necessary. If he decides to use a handful of characters and they pop up several times, their identities will be set and will clash if he wants to reuse them for a fitting situation. I'd rather he avoided backing himself into a corner if it comes down to creativity clashing with other things.

Congratulations on your ret-con, Murein!

Since it's been mentioned in danbooru, here's a list of ideas I have for possible invites next year.

Warukagi (SK-II, seems like a cool guy)
Chado (would love it but seems really high profile)
Tani Takishi (that yukkuri guy; seems to know Mizuki a bit)
TEDDY-PLAZA (though he's been to NYC before, so I'm not sure if that's a consideration)
Wi-Z GARAGE (good luck finding contact info)
Haniwa (of Miko Miko Suika fame maybe?)

I'll keep it there. Intentionally didn't add artists turned manga-ka like One Night Stand and Aki Eda. There's always ZUN, but I don't see that happening until at least the 5th invite.

Warukagi - The good news is this: Heleopolis has good connections with Warugaki and he's currently over in Japan hanging out with him on his one month long vacation. He probably has the highest shot of all the people.
Chado - DO WANT BADLY!!! IT would be worth it to find a way to contact him and haul him over here.
TEDDY-PLAZA - Ok so he's been to the states before might be tough to bring him over, but it never hurts to
Wi-Z GARAGE - Best bet is to contant Hele before he goes to Reitaisai, he might find a way to meet him.
Haniwa - Again, another want.

Don't forget the less known but growing in popular Aya Azama of WaHH fame.

But regarding ZUN, he might be a very hard one to pull in. Considering his stances on things (especially with westerners [though that's probably on a business scale]). I know it's worth a shot, like we said, we need to establish some bonds with other well known artist first. It might be the only way ZUN might reconsider.

Also I would nominate Gensoukoumuten as another candidate since he was well known for that more modern Touhou series that involved a postman adventures through Gensokyo delivering mail and being friendly with everyone. Very heart warming stuff.

Anyways, Today's episode: Kogasa and friends checks into the hotel and decide where to go sightseeing.

Forgot the post office guy. If part of the panel was talking about his view of Gensokyo, I'd be for it. If it was just to have him as an accessory like what seemed to happen with Mizuki, it's not in his best interest.

As for Aya Azuma, , she(?) is a mangaka as far as WaHH is concerned. It'd feel like we're taking work time away or something. That's just my two cents though.

I would second the idea if it's possibly getting a hold of someone from a music circle or fangame developer. But another artist would do just as well.

Dunkin' Donuts, which was founded some 60 years ago in Quincy MA and now operates in Canton MA, is absolutely huge out in the eastern half of the state, including Boston. Simply touring around my town has unearthed six of them, and searching further has revealed several more. And this is in a single TOWN and not some big city. You can literally start at one, then drive by a street that has one before taking a left at another one just to arrive at a fourth down that street.

If any of you come down South and encounter a Shipley's (http://www.shipleydonuts.ws/), I would say it's better than Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts combined.

It's like biting into a freshly-baked, fluffy, yeast bread, in donut form.

He did eventually get dinner about the same time as I was ready to actually be sociable and do things. The recounting is slightly out of order, as I ended up having dinner with Mizuki-san and Solamarle because we both (myself and Mizuki) needed to get our badges as well, and *after* that I ended up tied up for art. But yeah, he missed the ~*~main~*~ dinner shenanigans.

The combination bathtub/showers I came across in Japan were so absurdly tall that I find it strange that he didn't realize to tuck the curtain behind the wall.  Then again, maybe because the wall of the tub is so tall that you can leave the curtain on the outside of the tub and the water still won't splash out.

ahh awesome, you were pretty cool. I pretty much only saw you at the photo shoot though. it's a shame what happened to your mirror, If you plan on bringing back Kanako you should look into  mirrored acrylic (http://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/cut_to_size_plastic/acrylic_sheets_mirror_clear/521) it's pretty easy to cut out if you have a rotary tool and much lighter than an actual mirror so hot glue will hold it up. Even if you drop it, it won't shatter like a real mirror. For your purposes you can probably just buy their sample size which is 1/8''x 4'' x 4''

A bit of context for this strip:

The person that Hitoshi is talking to in the 4koma was the "really excited Japanese lady" we met at Anime Boston and Hitoshi drew her appearance spot-on. I assume that she was visiting Anime Boston for some event or something because when she happened upon the first Touhou photoshoot, she was so overjoyed to take pictures of the cosplayers.

She also politely entered the Touhou panel room while we were setting up. None of us apparently knew enough Japanese to ask her to wait outside with everyone else, so she stayed around until the panel started.

Also, her enthusiasm scared me.

The staff kept insisting on downloading all the songs via YT even if singers had their songs with them, and after several blue screens they rebooted the system entirely after every single song was done, resulting in a lot of waiting time and an opportunity for me to play Mushi Futari on my phone whilst doing so :V.

I think the thing that makes me tingle on the inside is that the way I styled my wig got drawn accordingly rather than how Kanako is normally drawn in the strip. Blame my love of crossovers and desire to make my Kanako hair resemble Haman Karn's...

Same; as I said in the danbo comments, I'm amazed he remembered my collar being open, the fingerless gloves, and the web belt pouches I had on, but he drew it all (even the trigger discipline!)  And in the same vein, he drew my hairstyle different than the hotel Tokikos; sans the super long side bangs since I wasn't sure the best way to do those.  Dude's got an eye for detail.

That's a Wal-Mart Hannaford can of corn, so it was probably brought with him, yeah he must have bought it in Mass. There isn't a Hannaford within walking distance of the Hynes, though. Maybe he picked it up on the way to/from GandalphHouse.

All I know is it's something Purvis and E-Nazrin did together. Don't know much about it, but ask them, they can tell you more about their strange little tradition. XP

So I guess this also concludes the story at hand? (Unless I'm mistaken...)

Still this was a very fun story Mizuki put together in remeberance of our hard work to bring him here.

Let us hope next year will bring us more doujin artists into the AB Touhou convention....

Should I keep this going till he takes the plane back home or what?

You know, I promised I go on, but I did promise I would cover it up till he reutned to Japan, I think he has now.... So I'll just stop here.... since my code of honor has been accomplished.

From here on out, all  I can say is we all had a fun ride watching Mizuki's antics and all the mess that came with it. You all did a spectacular job by bringing him here and I'm certain you will become legends to some for doing this.

I look forward to see how next year plays out.

As mentioned earlier, I'll probably bump this thread once more when Kogasa gives Sanae the penguins (which I'm certain will happen) but otherwise it's time to wrap it up since I can tell now that from here Mizuki's going back to doing stories of Kogasa's typical (but funny) life in Japan.

I'm pretty certain you all will be checking his comics daily since they are very well recognized. And since we made such a wonderful impression I'm certain we will have many laughs as his adventures continue.
