I first learned about it when I was directed to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nIah71lTpg) parody of overdrive. Upon learning it was A parody I watched the original. Which made even less sence to me. Months later I asked some people about any good games they would reccomend me and the only one they said that I hadn't played was Touhou.
-
A year or two ago I was bored and searched "hardest boss ever" on youtube. Well, I didn't find Touhou, I found Mushieme... err... "however you spell it"sama. But in the related videos were some japanese-user-uploaded videos of Touhou games. I had absolutely no idea what I was looking at, as the only time I'd seen a Shmup was Galaga at Pizza Hut, and the videos were all japanese and low quality. I just looked at the pretty patterns.
Then early this year, I noticed Slaves and Light(Who doesn't play Touhou anymore) talking about Touhou in the random section of a forum I used to go to, and recognized the name. So I decided I'd download it, I tried it out... and yeah. <3 Now I is hardcore fan. Other shmups seem so deadbeat~
-
I find there's an oddly accurate correlation between the number of people who came for the artistic style and stayed for the community, with the people who came from the PVs and stayed for the games.
After much thought I still haven't been able to figure out how I got here. I just phased in somehow.
-
Uhh, at least I know that I started being a fan in this April, yet I knew about Touhou for at least a year. I don't know what caused me to check out Touhou, but it was something Genderbent Haruhi and/or Vocaloid relation. Anyway, when I found out that Touhou is actually a Shmup, my favorite game genre, instead of the "The Greatest Fanwank what you must stay away from", I was already sold. And it just became better.
EDIT: After some thought... yeah Mushihime-sama video. That was the last kick.
-
Was visiting the vaguely-boyfriend-type-thing, he played some IN, I was like "Hmmmm, that looks fun," *tries* "Oh man, this is hard but it's so awesome."
And now I'm better than he is. ;D
-
A friend of mine who's obsessed with shmups and cute girls tried to get me into Perfect Cherry Blossom. He gave me no clear warning or explanation about precisely what "bullet hell" means. I forget whether I ran out of continues on Chen or shortly into stage 3. I uninstalled it and didn't look back.
Then ... well, I started to notice it here and there. Other people seemed interested. Then someone tried to get me into IN, which flopped a bit because I wasn't given any clear explanation of the time-system and how it related to Bad End, but then I came back to it. Then someone on a MUSH mistook my character's name ("Dizzy-chan") for what proved to be an IRC bot belonging to MaullarMaullar, and then I ended up in his channel. (Actually I forget which order those last two bits happened in exactly.)
And the rest, as they say (though not usually without some sort of qualifier like "as they say" -- it's almost never "the rest is history," but instead "the rest, as they say, is history" or something like that), is history.

I was looking through youtube for music, when I found a song with an awesome title. Fate of Sixty Years. Specifically, this remix. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5BH6N12diM) I listened through more Fate of Sixty Years remixes, before finding Riverside View. Then Septette, U.N. Owen, Phantom Ensemble, Master Spark... Before I knew it, I was addicted to Touhou remixes in general. It was a while before I played the games, but now I'm addicted to Touhou in general <3
-
I was playing Osu! and downloaded this (http://osu.ppy.sh/s/3367) beatmap one day. After playing it a few times, I started to wonder where Cirno was from, so I searched the video for any hints. I was eventually linked to Cirno's Perfect Math Class. After finding out where Cirno came from, I thought to myself, "Hey, this sounds familiar... Oh yeah! I saw some videos about this before!" then I ran off to find those videos and gradually, I started becoming more and more addicted.
The thing I find funny is that I subconsciously avoided Touhou for over a year. Marisa Stole the Precious Thing was one of the first things on my song list for Osu!, but I never looked into it. I also avoided all U.N. Owen remixes that I saw. Heck, I even saw some gameplay videos, but those weren't interesting at the time.

Oh my god I have to type this out again.
Ok I'll try to make this short.
Started with MUGEN.
Found Touhou characters.
Searched up IaMP.
Started with that.
Looked for sequels/prequels.
Found Dracil's IN extra stage video.
Awe'd by bullets.
Downloaded everything else.
Here I am.
-
again
puberty -> boner -> search for fap material -> deviantART -> 4chan -> /a/ -> Touhou

Kinda hard to explain... mostly started playing a year or so ago. Didn't really start joining any community until I could 1CC normal mode of any of the games (which turned into "any game that wasn't Imperishable Night" since apparently that one doesn't count >.>). Probably out of simple embarrassment over how bad I was (yeah, I know most people here make the exact same claim, but they could 1CC stuff period... I couldn't even 1CC easy mode at first).

This, almost to the letter. It was a run of IN extra. I finally started playing after I heard Necrofantasia for the first time.
-
I also watched 'The hardest game ever' video, that was the spark that lit my interest in curtain fire shooters. So a few months pass, once in a while I'd happen to see that video again, then 1 day I started browsing a bit and I came to some guy's IN extra stage clear. And I was watching it and then he reached mokou.... jezus christ.... that theme.... it's... it's..... GODLY!!111@2 *MUST DOWNLOAD NOW!!* So basically I started out with PCB and then went on to IN and my dream was to some day beat IN's extra stage. I have that now and even after 9000+ attempts that song is still awesome!

...I was McRolled
-
...I was McRolled
-
well like most people it started with Marisa Stole the Precious thing -> McRoll
but it was really this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8yWYGp89s8) that had this picture (http://safebooru.donmai.us/post/show/302425/flower-komeiji_koishi-reki_-pixiv-short_hair-silve) in the original video.
from that video i searched Hartmann's Youkai Girl, which lead me to SA, which lead to me researching the games. and then i somehow ended up here.
-
saw a vid of IN extra stage clear AGES ago, thought it was an arcade platform so at that point i wished i could play it but just gave up.
then last year, after lots of little dropped hints about this thing called touhou by an online friend of mine, i finally asked him WTF IS THIS TOUHOU OF WHICH YOU SPEAK OF? and he gave me a link and i was like HOW CAN I GET THIS GAME?
and here i am.
well i actually started off just playing eosd (after losing patience in HRtP lol). it took me quite a while to just full clear normal (with the last remaining life of the last credit, lol), moved on to all windows games, gradually watched more and more PVs early this year, and here i am browsing motk every day, getting a few normal 1ccs, playing and arranging themes for the guitar, cycling through touhou wallpapers everyday, etc, etc.
-
Unlike most, I heard the song behind Mcrolled, looked the name of the song up, found a flandre lunatic run, was awed.
Half a year or so later, some guy at a tourney had a SWR setup, I played it, loved it, looked stuff up, found epic music. Introduced it to my freinds, and suddenly, a touhou community popped up.
Up until recently, the only touhou game Ive played was SWR/Hisouten, but I have downloaded EoSD and PCB, and refuse to move on until Ive beaten them on normal or above.
-
About a year ago, I was listening to Vocaloid songs on youtube, and came across a Vocaloid dubbing over of what I now know to be the flash of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing. At first, I was like, "Who the hell are these characters? Something from an obscure anime I've never heard of? Some obscure video game that's never been released outside of Japan?" (DING!) By checking links to the video, I learned it was from a franchise called "Touhou," which I knew nothing about.
A short while after that, some people on a messageboard I was going to were talking about "Doujin" games, and someone mentioned Touhou. Someone else also said, "If you're new, try out Perfect Cherry Blossom."
I downloaded the demo of PCB and . . . was kinda underwhelmed. To be honest, I just never got into SHMUPs. But the music, my god, the music! That music stayed stuck to my head for a while.
A few months pass, and I was surfing tvtropes. I was bored and thought to myself, "Hey, you know that Japanese game series Touhou? I wonder if there's an entry for that." There was. And from tvtropes, I found a youtube link to The Cruel Sisters and the Suffering Maid by Innocent Key.
Nothing was ever the same after that.
-
Youtube sillyness -> Mushihimesama -> EoSD Extra -> PCB Demo get.
-
YouTube, Some random Naruto fanflash, then a Zelda fanflash, then a Haruhi AMV with Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, then PCB Demo.
Stopped for a few months, forgot it, saw the McRoll, heard U.N. Owen was Her, remembered Touhou, and voil?.
-
Don't remember too well, but then again I hate trying to remember things like this...it's always such a bother...
-Needed ideas for characters
-Found a Wiki entry on Touhou (read the entire thing)
-Found MoTK 1st
-Downloaded PC98 about a year ago
-Blah blah blah The End
I was more enthusiastic back then, but hey, it's what happens when you stay in something for a good while.
-
3 years ago: Etrian Odyssey
IOSYS does F.O.E.
Look up other IOSYS stuff
"Oh hey Touhou Project remix? Wonder what that is"
Two years pass
"...Okay, you know what? I need to fucking find this Touhou stuff. Hook me up"
"K download full pack here"
"Okay---IT'S BULLET HELL!? DEAR GOD YES."
-
A friend of mine showed me IN a long time ago. I played it for a minute (with Marisa/Alice), and I was like 'WTF is this shit? It's all dark and weird and way too hard.'
Then a few years later it's like 'What's this PCB stuff - OMYGAWD <3 HOW COULD I NOT LIKE TOUHOU GAMES?!?!?' and it's been like that ever since.
-
I played mushihimesama and wanted to find out more shmups for windows (i played mushihime on a ps2 emulator)
-
Rocketboom's "know your meme".
I was researching in order to understand the speech of some /b/tard kids who were, sadly, /b/tards in person as well as across the internet. And then bam, touhou.
-
So, there I was on this anime board, bored. I see a touhou topic with... I think it was a Wriggle quote in the title ("But I don't wanna get shot to pieces!") It piques my curiosity. I find my way to TouhouWiki. Am intimidated by the sheer scope of it. Forget about it for a few months. Then one day I randomly said, "Man, wtf is this Touhou thing?", Googled "What is touhou" (or some such), and the rest, as they say, is history.
-
I honestly don't remember exactly. I remember seeing it on /a/ of course, but soon after I came to Japan I started watching more videos on Nico, and I found a parody of the Marisa Stole(ry video with Taniguchi from The Melacholy of Haruhi Suzimiya, which led the watching the original flash. Then at some point I watched the Cirno's Perfect Math Class video and maybe a few others, including watching some playthrough videos on YouTube.
Finally, after Comiket last winter, I was with a friend in Akihabara who played the games and I told him I wanted to buy a Touhou game with Cirno in it and he told me to get PCB. So I did.
-
If I remember correctly for me it started with playing 'Help me, Eirin' in Osu on PC by chance. Liked it, then searched on Youtube and found pics of Eirin and the name Touhou. Liked the character design so I looked further.... and here I am now.
For a friend it went like this: Had to watch me play Touhou when he was doing university work again and again. Had to hear me talking about it. Had to see me buy UFO on our trip to Japan. Had to hear me talk more. Couldn't resist anymore. A few days ago he was playing EoSD 3 hours straight in the middle of the night 'cause he couldn't stop..... Just as flanned *evil grin*
-
Saw a weird sidescolling platofrmer/damaku hybrid game at some anime convention.
No contact for a while.
Accidently stumbled onto the Wikipedia artical for Touhou project, Thinking it was the game from the con.
Did some reaserch.
IOSYS, Remixex, memes, ect.
Actual gameplay vids.
Found out about Walfas.
Joined MoTK.
Played an actual Danmaku game for the first time.
OH GOD THE BUUULLLLEEEETTSSSSSSSS~~~ THEY HURT SO GOOOOOOODD~~
-
I found out about Mushihimesama, and started playing other shmups until I had the money to buy a Japanese PS2 and a copy of the game. Perfect Cherry Blossom was one of the games I played, and I was addicted from the first time I played it. Now it's my overall favorite series, while I happen to still like Mushihimesama a little bit more.
-
After bothering to research 'Touhou' on the internet, I found the Touhou Wiki. There, I browsed the characters and games for a while before finally stumbling upon Flandre Scarlet's page, and then-
I was McRolled
-
It started with a Lucky Star video my friend showed me. And then I was reading the comments and found out it was Night of Nights. Went to a Night of nights video and from there I started playing the games.
-
Paunch day 2009.
Had a Flowering Night remix with Captain Falcon vocals. The comments mentioned a possible source, something called "touhou." The next commenter said they didn't think so, but I searched for touhou anyway and found a vid of Mokou.
I knew right then and there I HAD to play that game.
-
2004. Was watching a superplay of DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou stage 3, and the unbelievable sight of it made me decide that I wanted to try shmups as a genre; that video made me want to challenge myself. It was good timing too, since RPGs (my prior favorite genre) were taking too much out of my time and I no longer had the patience for them. I had a hard time getting into shmups though, because of lack of availability and out of newness, ignorance of what is what and what is where. Later in the year, Imperishable Night came out and I noticed that it was getting a lot of attention on /t/. I ignored it for a bit, thinking that I wouldn't be able to run whatever it was on a non-Japanese PC, since I had never run a Japanese program before. However, its popularity persisted, and eventually, I found out that it was a shmup and gave in. Found out about MotK shortly after, too.
-
From a certain dude on YT which made videos of it.
One day I got bored, asked about it and there goes my free time :V

Before I knew what Touhou was, in 2003 or 2004, I saw a guy playing an STG, and all I remember is that the playable characters were kids instead of aircraft. I don't remember, but I think some of them were male, so it may not have been Touhou. Can anyone name some other vertical STGs starring people?
The only other one I know of now is Too Heat 2 and that came out later.
-

The Shikigami no Shiro series also has people, and I think ESP Ra.de. does too.

Thanks, I think it was ESP Ra.de. It was more of a traditional shooter, and Shikigami has portraits, which I don't remember seeing.
Except ESP Ra.de. wasn't for PC and he was playing on a laptop, so I dunno.

Wait, what? Mind telling me which magazine that might have been? I don't think I know one that would have a screenshot of such an exotic game...
On topic:
Searched for good midi music on www.vgmusic.com. in directories of consoles which I never heard of.
Found that an individual by the name of Justus Johnston had composed several very good midis.
Did a direct search for Justus Johnston via the page.
As it is a connected website, I found one violin arrangement done by him on OCRemix.
It was "Deep Mountain" from a game called Perfect Cherry Blossom.
Puzzled by the description "doujinshi shmup", I searched PCB on YouTube.
Found a phantasm video. Thought the game looked impossible but the music was awesome.
Comments directed me to a certain site that had the then brand-new Mountain of Faith demo for download.
So yeah.
Took me over a week to find out about the focus key, after which I could finally pass stage 2 easy. :V
-
I swear, they show that spellcard in every Touhou article to make it seem like the hardest game evar.
Tell me about it. Every time the games are brought up at other forums I attend, that picture is posted and the reaction everyone gives is "that game looks trippy".
Whenever that happens I have to step in and assure them that that attack is from the boss of the EX stage's EX stage, and that the rest of the game is actually quite reasonable by comparison.

I was browsing the TF2 forums
Someone makes a thread which linked a Heavy remix of Cirno's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C7bwTbOXP8)
Liked the music, searched the Heavyless version.
Found Cirno's Perfect Math Classroom(the PV not the forum)
Liked the characters in the video
Searched the Touhou wiki link in the Heavy remix video
Searched gameplay video
HOLY SHIT THE BOOLETS
Here I am
-
Wait, what? Mind telling me which magazine that might have been? I don't think I know one that would have a screenshot of such an exotic game...
I don't remember anymore what magazine, but I'm sure it was an article about 2D-shooters and the release of S?ldner Himmelsst?rmer.

I started with the music, and finding really awesome music labeled as "XZY's theme" kinda gets you curious.
Curiosity provided, I started looking for some videos. Mostly found stuff like IOSYS flash which added nothing but confusion.
The first time I saw Marisa stole the precious thing I mistook Alice for this "Marisa" person and therefor the whole thing made, like, absolutely no sense to me.
Reaching the state of knowing somewhat about the music and the fandom, my main question remaining was "What's the deal with the miko and the witch?", and I looked up the Touhou Wiki. Finally having some actual information to work with, and game titles to look for, I found me some gameplay videos of Lunatic runs. I quickly realized it's too late to back out now, got myself copies of the game and EoSD - IN normal 1cc's quickly followed.
Now, nearly all of my game playing time is dedicated to Touhou and it's music takes up most of my playlists.
-
I heard of it in passing here and there for a very long time before I really developed an interest in it. One thing was the FOE video, which I loved along with Etrian Odyssey itself, so I just had to find out what all the references were. Buuuuut I didn't particularly like Marisa Stole the Precious thing Help Me EIRINNNNNN was nice though, and whatever I saw of the characters etc. and the fandom didn't seem that interesting. ...In fact, I was kind of put off the more I heard about the Tohuou fandom, it has an "interesting" reputation. However, I did like the idea of bullet hell, from sort of a game design philosophy standpoint -- basically taking a game genre and exaggerating/rearranging bits until it comes out needing different skills, that's neat. Still, I knew I'd be terrible at it, especially since I've barely ever played shmups in general, so that wasn't quite enough to get me playing.
Oh yeah. Someone also once gave me an mp3 of Onigashima in the Fairyland. I loved it, but never found out anything else about it, possibly in part because it was labeled Ogre of Country Island. Ahhh, back in the day.
Eventually, though, a good friend of mine got into Touhou. ...And that friend sucks horribly at convincing anyone to do anything, so it still took like another half a year for them to get me to try it. I was bored. Just as I expected, I did horribly, though the games were still fun. Also just as expected, I wasn't interested in the characters or stories... at first. Part of it was that I had no clue what was going on, so I ended up going over the wiki just to try and understand it (Imperishable Night is kind of brain-melting at that stage) and bam, next thing I know I've devoured all the books and stories and manga and am moving on to fanworks and I'm head over heels in love.
That was pretty close to a year ago. It's been a fun ride. And I'm still awful at the games, but they're still fun, and so is the rest.
-
was in the middle of 2006.I tried to found cute images about Rozen Maiden, and found the Touhou imageboard. In that time, existed lots of threads about that and i was happy. But i saved another very beautiful CGs from a "something" who are called "Touhou" ...a week after or maybe two,my curiosity send me to the Touhou Wiki....ah! is a PC Game? Danmaku? (what is that?,i said) made for ONE PERSON? then, i downloaded the demos of EoSD,PCB and IN... I chosse that cute witch, (i like the witches)...and OH GOD HOW BEAUTIFUL PATTERNS AND MUSIC.Soon,i wanted all the music, the images, the games,all...More later, i wanted the official stories and doujins...and then,i discover the ilustrations of Genji Asai for CoLA.My fangirl goggles explodes then see the "moe" (glasses) and yaoi possiblities of one of the characters: Rinnosuke. (Genji Asai draw him a bit girly sometimes) that finally glue me into Touhou, before the "Marisa stole the precious thing" fenomenon.
And here i am.So bad in the games, but faithful XD
-
yaoi possiblities of Rinnosuke.
does not compute

I was watching one of LuizPrower's videos, and this song was suddenly inserted. The video said it was called "Cirno Baka", and out of boredom I wanted to hear the whole thing. So I found the source video, and saw a poorly drawn version of this blue ice fairy singing a song about how she was not stupid. It wasn't a very well sung song, but somehow it entranced me and I absolutely needed to find the anime this girl was from. A bit of research and a MoF demo download later, and I discovered that this was that series of WTF shooters I saw several months ago. I wasn't that good, but I kept playing to hear that wonderful music. A point towards a certain FORBIDDEN site around 10 days later, and I got the game Cirno was in, and had to continue on her after trying on normal modo. I was planning on deleting it since I hate pirating games, but...something made me keep onto it, thinking that maybe if I keep playing, I'll get somewhere in it.
And you all know how that went. :V
-
I heard about from a friend because my name resembles the word "Touhou"
no i will not tell you what it is
-
Haha, some of you guys have nice stories.
I'm having an incredibly hard time remembering mine too. I think I gradually came to recognize the characters long ago after seeing them in multiple places (I follow a lot of artists), and soon decided to try out PCB. For some reason I couldn't get the text working back then, so I really had no idea of the characters' personalities or what was going on (not that it's spelled out too clearly even with the text, haha!).
In the years since then I've only sorta dabbled in the games when I feel up for a challenge, and paid attention to the character designs. I'm a little embarrassed to say I know more about the character designs than their actual backgrounds and stories, but I'd like to change that!
-
This video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlZGXbCsQfk)
Googled Nitori and I came across Touhou wiki. I was really captivated by the character artwork and especially Utsuho's "CAUTION!! CAUTION!!" when she activates spell cards. When I got some of the demos, dodging all those bullets made me feel like God~
-
I saw people raving about it on the internet and just had to check it out.
-
It was a long time ago in internet years(in 2002), I was looking at some website that hosted indie games and small games and downloaded the demo of EoSD. At the time I wasn't exposed to anime culture so seeing little girls and fairies shooting tons of bullets at each other was weird. But I liked the action and finished the demo. I forgot about it until the PCB demo came out and I decided to find more about this touhou thing. I landed here back when there was a real website. I learned that EoSD and PCB were longer than 3 levels and that I was just playing the demos. Finding downloads of the full games was pretty hard back then. I really got addicted when IN came out, my first touhou game launch.
-
Found out about Walfas.
Joined MoTK.
Played an actual Danmaku game for the first time.
This particular progression makes me disappointed :|
-
Patchouli in Mugen led me to search "touhou patchouli" in YouTube, which led to me watching parts 4-6 of a lunatic 1cc of EoSD with MarisA. After that I 1cc'd EoSD normal with MarisA myself, and it all kind of went from there.
If you're wondering if there was a happy ending, yes, I did quit playing Mugen. :V
-
Right...the first contact I ever had with Touhou was from Mugen too (I never played, but for some reason I found entertainment in watching others play it). First I saw this character titled "drunken loli" (Suika), and later also saw a Patchouli. Before both of those though, in one video I heard this really amazing song used as BGM. The poster said it was called "Patchouli Nights", and while that was totally incorrect, I ended up discovering it eventually as The IaMP version of Voile ~ The Magic Library. It was the first Touhou song I ever heard, but it wasn't until over a year later that I actually discovered Touhou itself.
-
First contact with Touhou?
Youtube poops.

Sort of threw my boyfriend, when we met for the first time, his ringtone was Marisa Stole The Precious Thing, and we both liked IOSYS and that's how we became friends. And then when we got together (three weeks after we met) we looked into IOSYS a little more together and discovered about the games.
To clarify, before I met him, I only knew of IOSYS, not Touhou, I'd only just gotten into them.
-
Personally, I found out through a combination of the McRoll'd video (trying to find the source of the music), a couple pics of Wriggle Nightbug (trying to find who the character was) and finding Cirno's Perfect Math Class on youtube.
-
Well... A while back i was going through a bunch of Mario TAS's (ranging from Kaizo to 64) and somehow ran into Mario stole the precious thing.
Needless to say I looked for the original song which happened to be in the related videos, and right after which I saw Overdrive done by the same group so at this point I'm asking myself "Who the hell are these people." After a few minutes of looking around I quickly found out "Touhou." Not knowing what it was I wiki'd it finding out it was a game, go back to youtube find a gameplay video, and "omgwtfbbqmuffins" ensued... The rest is easy enough to figure out.
-
My friend talked about it to me.
Ironically, now I'm obsessed, and he didn't really like it at all. :V
-
I find it funny that a lot of people found touhou through youtube but youtube didn't exist yet when I discovered touhou. Youtube really was one of the major evolution of web 2.0. With this and wikipedia it's way easier to gather information.

Yeah, when I got into it, there was basically this site, and nothing else. All of the information on Touhou was either on the site itself or in the forums, and it wasn't much. If I remember right, it was just a full script translation for EoSD, a partial one for PCB, basic scoring instructions for the three Windows games, and a spellcard compendium on the forums. Touhou was so mysterious; I think that was part of the initial appeal for me.

Mm.. I might know which one you're talking about. Is it 霊夢の世界 -The world of Reimu- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KYVWzKy6CE)? This video actually got me interested in Sound Horizon. :D It's the only old Touhou video I know of that is set to one of this band's songs.
-
I learned about Touhou from a certain video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q16KpquGsIc) that involves a certain clown and a certain vampire's theme. :P
-
A couple or three years ago, I came across Marisa Stole the Precious Thing video. I looked it up and saw a video playthrough of IN (with an awesome arrange of Mokou's theme) I was like "okay not gunna even try". I think I looked at imageboards without knowing what or where they were and then fast forward to last year! I just met a new friend and she got into touhou (dunno when) and I was like "COOL" and yeah.
the end
-
Found a video of Earthbound with the hardcore remix of "UN Owen-?" in it. That led to me watching a Ronald McDonald video later and recognizing the song.
That later led to me showing a person who goes by "Kitsune" the video after which he told me he knows of the song from a game. He linked me to the Flandre battle which linked me to the Hitbox Patch with linked me to my first Touhou games (6 and 11)
-
This again?
Was looking up TWEWY stuff on youtube, came across this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmzm6PJDuTg&feature=related), said "what the hell is that awesome music", found Kefit's Flandre clear, grabbed games, and have been getting angrier every day for over a year now.
-
2007. I was away on an internship, and when MJP came to visit he'd be playing PoFV on his laptop. I got a kick out of the music, the fact that all of the <strike>playable</strike> EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE CHARACTERS is a lady and DEAD PARROT but decided there'd be no way I'd ever have enough ADD to even follow the game, no less play it.
This all went into hibernation until 2009, where I stumbled upon a picture in some message board that was cute, got me to look into what a Touhou was again.... and here we are now.
-
I remember one of the posters on another board talking about Touhou and capturing spell cards years ago, but at the time it didn't really interest me. I watched some Touhou related stuff on youtube [Precious Thing, McRoll, etc.] but still didn't think about it much.
Earlier this year, I really got into Vocaloid, and I ended up watching the Vocaloid version of Overdrive, which peaked my interest in the series.
Finally, around the beginning of June or so, I finally started playing the series, starting from EoSD. Now I play it on and off with no chance of hell of ever getting past hard mode.
Yeah, not a very exciting story.
On a completely unrelated note, I actually did one of my college presentations on Vocaloid. No, I don't have a life.
-
Around 2006 or 2007, I became obsessed with Cave Story, and had to play any and all Japanese doujin and indie games. So I posted a thread on 4chan asking what some good indie games were. Someone posted a link to PCB.
I loved the characters, and the way ZUN seems to pull compelling ones with imaginative back stories and designs out of his ass every single game (at least up until the most recent one).
I couldn't understand anything that was going on, because a translation patch hadn't been created yet, all I knew was that I loved youmu and yuyuko.
And it slowly built up from there
-
Like a lot of others it was through youtube. About a year and a half ago, someone sent me a video of Overdrive (he didn't know from what it was either) Thought it was kind of cool and searched for other IOSYS videos and reached Marisa Stole the Precious Thing. Being a yuri fangirl it made me very curious, googled a bit, found the games and fell in love :P
-
Referred by a user on another forum in a thread about bullet hell games. Started with Imperishable Night and now I've got most of them.
-
Hmm, let's see. Saw the "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing" video but wasn't interested (but I love it now, go figure). I noticed "There certainly are a lot of these 'touhou' hentai pictures on this site" but then came the yukkuri hentai and I was repulsed. Finally I ended up on a YouTube video of one of the many covers of "U. N. Owen Was Her?" I ended up seeing a video of a playthrough of EoSD extra stage, did some research, and decided to try that game. I eventually discovered the wiki, imported EoSD and IaMP, and here I am.
-
Saw Mario Stole the Precious Thing on YouTube, thought the music in the background was pretty catchy, but didn't think much of it after that.
Later on, I was in a chatroom for another forum I go to, and noticed the word "JAAAAAOOOOOOOOOO~" as the room description one night. I asked where it was from, and a friend linked me to the Patchy/Meiling M-1 clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksBz5tOf3IU), and then to a non-HD version of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLAQm2OcC-4) video.
And here I am now, almost two months later. :V
-
I was also McRoll'd :(... but surprisingly, I actually had the Suwako version of McRoll, then there was a link to the real song on that video, and it just went from there :).
-
TV Tropes. In exact order,
Crowning Music of Awesome > Video Game Section (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/CrowningMusic/VideoGames) > Touhou Page > U.N. Owen was Her? > Holy crap must play this > Surely I can do thi- > WHY AM I LOSING LIVES TO THE ICE FAIRY > ;.;
-
I logged on, I saw, I asked, I downloaded. Nothing special.
-
I remember seeing a video of Shoot the Bullet and wanting to play it. I downloaded the Imperishable Night. From then on (4 years ago) I've been playing Touhou with long hiatuses and then around a year ago finally downloading every single Touhou game.
Also, first time I've heard U.N. Owen: (link) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAlaS2_zZ3Y)
-
1. Randomly watched a few Japanese vids on YouTube.
2. Heard about it from a friend.
3. Watched the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVAs out of boredom.
4. Discovered Touhou Wiki.
5. Discovered that Sakuya is Dio Brando only in loli non-vampire maid form.
6. Read JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Parts 1-3.
7. Played Embodiment of Scarlet Devil for the first time.
And that is the story of my life.
-
I found out by trying to figure out what the powers and the characters to Megamari. I forgot if it was Cirno, Touhou, or Megamari that lead me here. It was one of those three.
-
s of it in a dream. it said.
;you shall go to youtube and write touhou; and i waked up and said WTF was that.
i checked it and whoah, that was some nice games.
i downloaded touhou 6 embodient of scarlet devil, and became in love with the games.
later i saw suwako in silver forests ;kero Destiny; and was sold.
[tso]I probated you for a week because of your awful posting, and then you come back and not only keep it up, you fully admit to piracy. Bye~[/tso]
-
I saw the video Nitori GET DOWN and I did a bit of a search on Nitori, got interested and later downloaded the games, loved them and that's where I am today.
[tso]Admitting to pirating the games is not a wise idea here. Please refrain from this point forward.[/tso]
-
I watched a Nico Nico Kumikyoku video with Marisa Stole the Precious Thing in it. So, yeah, it all started from there. :D
First post BTdubbs!
-
I thought that the BGM music for mcrolled was pretty cool, so I looked it up. I got no results somehow, so I clicked one of the related videos, flowering night. Needless to say I became addicted. I went to a fan forum for a game I don't play anymore, and saw they played touhou on. The rest as they say is history. (I asked what platform it was for :V)
-
Around Winter 2005, I followed a friend from our home channel into #shrinemaiden on Pyoko and played around with the Touhou IRC gashapon figurine collection game. From there I looked up the characters I was dispensing, and then discovered the games.
-
Once upon a time there was a facebook group page for Ar Tonelico
Back when the first one was the only one out. I became friends with the group creator(another college kid in Massachusetts) and we became friends via msn as well. One day i was playing Melty Blood Act Cadenza and i literally worshipped that game~ Then he comes up and asks me if I play touhou since we found out we play a lot of the same RPGs and fightin games.
Said no and then he showed me IaMP since MoF was the most recent game during the time. After putting it off for a long while i decided to ask him for the link and redownload the game and give the dam thing a try. I thought the chars was cute but the fighting system turned me off. I deleted it and went back to MB XD
Curiosity got the best of me since i was RANDOMLY running into fanart by it on occassion. So i grabbed it again and thought to try a different game (game 6) i was turned off by the fact it was a shooter. wasn't well versed in that genre. But i played Easy and after playin it, learning graze, patterns, etc. i thought it was cool. and kept it. then i tried IaMP again and thought to REALLY try learning it and i did.
Through blood and rage Remilia became my fave character almost entirely out of spite eventually (at first Reisen was my fave, then Mokou and then finally it became Remi and it stuck) and now i'm pretty adept at the games and found my way her. I even surpassed my friend who introduced me to touhou.
The End~
-
Simply talking with a friend what kinf of games weplay and she mentioned touhou so i got to youtube saw it and tried it out^_^
-
Actually not through the music and characters!
Yes, big shocker here. :P
I saw some guy on youtube LP PCB once, and the game looked fun and challenging, which is exactly what I look for in a game.
A week or so later I downloaded the demo, and from that point I was hooked.
I only found out later that there was this massive fanbase.
I never even heard of MC roll until after I had beaten EoSD Extra. :V
-
Strangely enough, I have no clue. I went from "What's Toehouz?" to "How am I supposed to live without my daily dose of danmaku?" without pretty much any transitional stage.
Seriously, I don't know. This is going to bug me now..
-
i l earned it form random advertising.
later the "holy Youtube LP's"
then a birthday present from a random freind i had. (touhou 7)
played it and said i MUST have the rest.
he sold his games to me for cheap price (1 - 5, and 6 - 12)
i was so happy, and now i do play TOUHOU everyday.
wow i feel like a freak.
-
Wait what?
Do you own physical copies of the PC-98 games?
-
Wait what?
Do you own physical copies of the PC-98 games?
yup, he has piracied them.. but ohh well i buyed piracy, founded it out too late.
he will not buy them back.
A week ago, when i snuck around for new realeases of touhou games. looked for any words of touhou 13.
found then from an other forum, out someone else had a similar problem, where they have buyed by an unknown person (i dont say names for safe pupose) on a selling site (not EBAY!), but then she resended the CD (because of piracy thingy). i think i will sell it to another one, so i can get it free from me.
-
Oh, I was about to say...
Real copies of the original PC-98 games run for more than 100,000 yen here.
-
Oh, I was about to say...
Real copies of the original PC-98 games run for more than 100,000 yen here.
hmm ok. i telled him what you said, and he said he got it from one of his au pair freinds (he was in England in 1 year as student) he don't know where it come from, but he says that it is not been pirated.
i hope it is true (shiver trough me if it was piracy)
hmm i know you, you are the one who buys form internet and sell it to other people.
mayby w will buy from you one day.
i live in denmarrk By the way.
-
My friend showed me the Bad Apple video, and I was like, "this is hot, where is this from?" He told me the characters are from Touhou, so I was like, "let's youtube this game." I saw how ridiculous it was, and wanted to try it. I got a demo, and was hooked. :)
-
Shamefully it was from this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qS1kqhhebw) that got me starting to look for more information on Touhou.
-
Slow transition... I remember seeing Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, but it never really incited me to search for Touhou... I think I came across it when I came across Dan Kim. I looked through all of his 4chan postings and I suddenly got really interested :D. Obviously it was the "go go Touhou Rangers"! That ultimately got me to googling "Touhou". The honk honk and green ranger were obviously integral as well ;)
-
Six years ago, the demos for EoSD and PCB were featured on a site called Gamehippo.com(dead now). I downloaded those and fell in love with the series for life.
-
U.N Owen remixes
Marisa stole the precious thing parodies
Google touhou
Download demo
And the rest was history awesome.
-
Gotcha, found this thread. Anyways...I had just played the demo of World of Goo on my Wii, so I went to search for the shareware game "Tower of Goo" on the web, because I had heard that World of Goo originated from it. On that same site where I found ToG was the demo of Perfect Cherry Blossom. I downloaded it and...(what do you call it, Avalanche Effect?) happened, and now I'm so totally hooked that anything that isn't Touhou is boring. Apparently there was no Youtubing involved.
-
Touhou was plastered on the internet. All over the place. Everywhere.
I eventually caved in to see what the appeal was.
I'm now "one of them", and happy to be there.
-
Someone I knew who was testing their web host put the flash movie marisa stole the precious thing on it . I watched it and thought it was about lesbian robots or something, but the tune was really really hooking, I listened to it a lot and I wondered "wtf is this from?"
Like, a month later, some of my other internet friends were talking about playing touhou and I finally looked it up and realized "oh hey this is what that flash was based off of!".
God I feel stupid having thought it was about lesbian robots.
It's clearly about lesbian everything.
/me is shot

Oki~
1. I was frequenting the imagesite Minitokyo at that time and were looking witch new pictures were uploaded everyday.
2. Saw someone uploading some REALLY cool looking pictures one day.
3. They included this one http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=31974 (http://safebooru.org/index.php?page=post&s=view&id=31974)
4. The Artist of the pictures was labeled as "Touhou". Saved them as that and didn't bother any more.
5. More pictures of the artist appeared and I really liked the characters, so I wanted to find out more about them.
6. Typed touhou into youtube -> found "strange dot pictures I didn't even bother to click at" (aka. the normal shooters)
7. Also found fighting game videos and, oh, there is the silver haired girl from my picture again.
8. Watched a battle of Someone VS Youmu on Youmus Day-Stage in IaMP.
9. Heard the Music, mind was blown, wanted more.
10. Searched for IaMPs OST, didn't find it thought, because I typed it with a small L instead of an capital i.
11. Somehow stumbled upon the touhou wiki -> later with informations from there I found an download of all OSTs from Th 1 - 9.5
12. Download took forever and a half, so I researched more, found out that the Shooters were the main games, tried some demos, finally listened to the music, found remixes, full games and in the end I was lost in a fantasy world to share with a lot of others.
...
13. Started to hate Youmu for being the worst opponent in every freaking game she appears is.
-
In 2007. I was on Desuchan, on the /alice/ board, of course, and I saw we have a new board called "Touhou". So I checked out and saw quite a bit of intiguing artwork and people talking about what an incredible game this is. This prompts me to Google, which brought me to the Mountain of Faith demo, which I went with solely because it was the most recent one. That hooked me from the start, and MoF still has a special place in my heart because of it.
It was only after playing Imperishable Night that I realized I had seen the IOSYS video 'Stops at the Affected Area and Immediately Dissolves' in 2006 on a wholly unrelated forum, where it had just been posted in one of those "Oh those whacky Japanese" threads.
-
I think I first discovered the existence of Touhou last year. It's kind of a long story regarding each step in the process, but I'll cut it short. I was following the WRYYYYYY thing over Youtube, when I found the "Touhou Parody #6" video - you know, where Sakuya and Meiling were the PC and Mac, and Sakuya performed the "Road Roller combo" to prove PC's superiority (which is the undeniable truth :V). I would go through a different process to get myself into the bullet hell games, but that parody video started it all.
-
A friend introduced me to PCB, I screwed around as Sakuya (least ugly of all 3 girls... man that artwork was terrible) but failed totally miserably. Had NO idea what was going on or how to play the game. I thought Borders of Life were me actually making spellcards of my own. I figured that bombing as soon as the enemy started their card (which I had no idea how that worked- where's the health bar?! Uwaa~) was the coolest shit ever.
Also, the music was turned off. It got boring really fast. I stopped playing.
Listened to Touhou music for about a month after that without really knowing what was up. Picked SWR and played with a friend. Things snowballed from there, back to the shooter games and onwards.
Good times.
-
My friend showed me the Bad Apple video, and I was like, "this is hot, where is this from?" He told me the characters are from Touhou, so I was like, "let's youtube this game." I saw how ridiculous it was, and wanted to try it. I got a demo, and was hooked. :)
:D
Me, too. I think I was watching filler Bleach and saw half of Bad Apple in the intro. Then I was like !!!
Well, I went onto Gaku Gaku and started reading doujins. I didn't start playing the game until recently.
IT LOOKED TOO HARD.
-
I found out about Touhou when I saw someone playing it during Tech club. He was playing Imperishable Night extra, and I kept thinking, "wow, why are there so many of that girl?" each time there was a spell card and a cut-in of Mokou. That day I Googled and eventually got Imperishable Night, completely clueless to the fact that it was part of an entire series called Touhou. At that time, though, I admittedly felt kind of stupid playing it, since all the characters were female. :ohdear:
I didn't get into Touhou until I met someone else by complete chance who was into the music of Touhou, and was going around showing everyone Necrofantasia and U.N. Owen was Her. Things picked up from there, and here I am now.
-
I posted for a while on Audiosurf's official forums when the game was first released (early 2008) and saw one of those nonsensical "look at the size of this torrent I'm downloading! LOL IT'S HUGE!!" threads. This particular torrent happened to be Touhou music. I'd heard of Touhou from any number of random places by that point, but this time I decided to finally see for myself what all the fuss was about. Discovered the games, bought PCB and IN, and that was that...
...no really, that was that, since shortly afterward, I got a new job, moved, and pretty much stopped caring about the games for a very long time. My base awareness level of the series remained high, though, mostly due to the music and all the zillions of arranges that were on Youtube. Earlier this year I decided I should try giving the games another shot, and I think this time ZUN really has won me over. <3 (This forum helps, too. I've lurked for ages on... uh, okay, that other site that I apparently can't type out... but never felt like I wanted to post there.)
-
Wonderful little Irish Canadian girl would always have silly stories about the fanon/canon stories made up for the Touhou characters, and she'd share them with me. At first I was like 'okay, whatever, *nodnodplzshutup.*'
Once I caught on that most of the fanon became ascended fanon, I was like 'hey now. This has that big a following, and the creators are that okay with their fandom to let them come up with the backstory? That's p. cool.' I started trying to keep track of the crazy-ass names (I'm looking at you, Keine Kamishirasawa and Aya Shameimaru) and the main characters, and the villians, who weren't really villians, because they actually became main characters later on, and OH MY GOD WHY IS IT SO CONFUSING BUT SO AWESOME I MUST DIVE DEEPER INTO THIS.
And so I did. The first thing that sucked me in was the canon/fanon relation and the open-endedness of Gensokyo, with all the diverse backstories taken from mythology (Hiya Kaguya, Mokou) and plain silliness (Humanoid tengu? Sure, why not. Have some Kappa, too), and then I moved on to listening to the music. Not too ashamed to say I've got a couple of remixes of U.N.Owen Was Her saved to my computer, but I've also got buckets of epic orchestral remixes of some of the 'deeper' songs (in the sense that you have to dig through more of Touhou to find them, e.g. Fate of Sixty Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGqlEL9WQW0&playnext_from=TL&videos=PNxZkDBs-KM)).
In my eyes, I became a Touhou fan shortly before the release of MoF, but I've never actually played any of the shooters beyond IN and PCB - both of which I have yet to successfully clear on normal difficulty. I'm more than competent on SWR/UNL, however, which I enjoy playing on a regular basis whenever I take my laptop anywhere without internet. I'd like to get some local friends to start playing it so I can duel 'em, or at the very least figure out how to patch up and connect online with anyone else. It's a low priority, though.
(Random tidbit - on World of Warcraft, I have a Holy spec Paladin. Her name is Yamaxanadu. When she dies, she doesn't make a corpse run, she makes a Corpse Voyage. BA-DUM, TISH)
-
U.N Owen
Marisa stole the precious thing
Google touhou
Download demo
And the rest was history awful... for the rest of the fandom.
<Tengukami> I guess this warning needs to be on every single page of this thread: pirating the games is frowned upon here, as you can tell by the warning sticky on this board, so bringing up that you have pirated the games should be avoided. Thanks.
-
McRolled...
But I didn't become interested in the series until I saw a fan art of 9 Touhou characters facing off against the 9 Straw Hat Pirates of One Piece.
This one:

Some lovely friend tricked me into playing Perfect Cherry Blossom saying it was the stepmania song pack he was suppose to zip for me~ Best day of my life(frustrating actually cause i thought i was too good for normal and hard).
-
A friend introduced me to PCB, I screwed around as Sakuya (least ugly of all 3 girls... man that artwork was terrible) but failed totally miserably. Why am I the only one who thinks the PCB art looks the best of all games? Reimu looked adorabubble~
-
Why am I the only one who thinks the PCB art looks the best of all games? Reimu looked adorabubble~
Eh, it's mostly Marisa.
She looked a bit...wide. >_>
-
I'm ashamed to say it, but I found it though...
ran ran ruu. yes :S
-
I found out about it from a maplestory fan redo of overdrive that was mixed into an MMV I dont even know if the video is still up, but that was maybe 1 year ago, then it came back to my attention from a friend of mine who forced me to play EoSD, I've been hooked ever since to all the touhou games.
-
Somehow I came across the usual Mushihimesama video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQZuidKexBQ), and then in the Related Videos thingy there was Dracil's IN Extra video. Then found SP's IN Extra video. And then I decided I must try this game. I was relatively new to shmups in general at the time, and I absolutely loved Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun (not that I was any good at them), but I was looking for something else to play.
And look at me now. :V
-
I'm ashamed to say it, but I found it though...
ran ran ruu. yes :S
Ran Ran Ruu was actually part of how I discovered Touhou. The others were Kero 9 Destiny MADs, pictures on Gelbooru/Danbooru, and reccomendations from a friend. Combine all those discoveries happening within a few days of each other with my ability to search the internet and you end up with my Touhou addiction.
-
Someone posted the Kumikyoku Automatic Mario video. I became interested in the actual songs in it, and sort of ignored the Touhou for a couple weeks. Then later someone posted Cirno's Perfect Math Class which pushed me into looking into Touhou. Yeah. Although my first contact with anything Touhou at all was ages ago when I saw that flash with Marisa playing the broomguitar, and I thought "wtf is this" and closed the window. What a shame.
-
I'm ashamed to say it, but I found it through...
ran ran ruu. yes :S
Don't know why everybody hates it so much. I thought it was pretty good. Or am I just some kinda screwed-up freak?
Anyway, I found out about it from the McRoll also.
-
I'm ashamed to say it, but I found it though...
ran ran ruu. yes :S
I feel your shame, I found touhou through "Megatokyo."
*sevencats run from the usual barrage of abuse*
I swear I don't read it any more!
*ahem*
Dom posted a link to the PofV demo, I think he was saying something about game titles and throwing darts at dictionaries. After giving that and the PCB demo a try, I realised where many of the characters in fanarts I had downloaded came from. A bit of research later led to me buying the games of paletweb, which followed on to a minor adventure getting the games into the country. Had to explain to customs several times what the games were.
I found the fansites soon after and a treasure trove of doujin goodness. I really never thought I could be a fanboy for anything.
-
A friend of mine never stopped talking about it for the longest time, constantly linking me to remixes of themes, so I eventually gave in and got IN.
-
I was online playing Runescape (shut up, it was fun at the time) And the radio played a song called "Becky LOL" from Melody and Mezzo. I looked that up on youtube and found a link for something called "You Should Drink cucumber Flavored Beer" I was like what the hell and clicked it and I was like "Wow thsi is awesome." Then I went on to such things as You should make us your B-R-I-D-E-S and the Feast Lasts Forever! as well as Cirno's Perfect Math Class. Then when I listened to Marisa Stole the Precious Thing I was like "Dude I gotta get this game" (that was how I spoke back then, this was two years ago) And then it wasn't until a year ago when I heard "The Maid and the Pocket Watch of Blood" EoSD is still my favorite game. Sakuya is still and will always be my #1 Fav.
haha wall of text
EDIT: Fixed ban qualified content sorry
-
Seriously, I really need this warning on every god damned page?
As piracy is grounds for banification 'round these here parts, DO NOT TALK ABOUT DOWNLOADING OR HAVING DOWNLOADED THE GAMES.
Thank you.
Edit: Sticky ammended.

Megamari.
-
Because I liked (and still like) Eternal Fighter Zero, I searched for other games made by Twilight Frontier and SWR catched my interest.
After playing it a bit, I searched for other Touhou games and, after watching them on youtube, I thought that they were impossible for me (never played shmups) but I gave them a try. Now Nue's defeat is only a matter of time.
