The demo for Hopeless Masquerade, the 13.5th Touhou game is, is finally released! There are three demo characters available, which are Reimu, Marisa, and Ichirin. I think the game is really fun, and has some very interesting mechanics. One thing I found interesting was the popularity meter, being that the game is all about the popularity of religions, and how the person with the highest percent of popularity wins if the timer run out. I can't wait to see who else gets in the game, and the fact that Shou and Byakuren are both not in the backround of the Palaquin ship stage when everyone else is makes me somewhat suspicious...

Since the above was written, we now know the following characters, in addition to Reimu, Marisa and Ichirin, are also playable:

Mamizou being the penultimate boss for the new character like Yukari was to Suika is pretty convincing. Her transformation/disguises gimmick is a nice lead-in to the new character's presumed use of masks as per a masquerade, so I think this is a very likely idea.
What's more
-Mamizou is the Extra boss for the game before, and Yukari is the Extra boss for the game before (well Phantasm but you know what I mean)
-It's been said she likes to hang around the Forest of Magic. A decent number of the last few missing characters could fit there as an audience, or at a generic forest (Alice, Rumia, Mystia, Hina, maybe Yuuka?)
-Would end up with 10 characters total, which would be the same as IaMP (plus 10 seems like a lot more "complete" than 9, us humans like our multiples of 5/double digits huh)

The Forest of Magic seems quite likely for Mamizou for reasons stated above and it could house quite a few of these characters. The remaining MoF crew and Iku/Tenshi/Kasen seem like they could spectate at the top of Youkai Mountain, but that doesn't make a lot of sense considering Kanako and friends are already somewhere else. If I'm not mistaken, the entrance to the underground is near the foot of the Youkai Mountain so that's a possible place for the MoF/SA characters + Kasen to watch. Another possibility is the SDM except not really. And then there's the moon.
Youkai Mountain seems the most likely place for the new character's stage (assuming she doesn't have a completely new location), so that might or might not be a hint what kind of character she might be.

It also could be that some of these chars are already in some of the shown stages, but were just off-camera (Rin nearly doesn't appear in the Koishi pic, for instance). I'd wager that either Momiji, Hatate or Hina can also be found in Nitori's stage.

So I have an idea about the relevance of the title Hopeless Masquerade. I've read through everyone's profile except Reimu and I've noticed people being accused of "decadence" in 4 of them, Marisa, Byakuren, Futo, and Miko. Byakuren's profile also reminded of Kanako's description of shrines in the outside world, people coming to places of worship for the wrong reasons. What I expect is that the title is referring to people only pretending to be religious. I'm not sure why it's Hopeless but I suspect it refers to something like, the current situation being hopeless, unless someone intervenes.
On a different note, can we get the translations into an organized place?

Keep in mind that it seems like characters can be used as an audience for multiple stages though. Prismriver Sisters were in both the Palanquin Ship and Miko's stage. The three fairies were at the Hakurei Shrine and Futo's stage. Maybe that just means those groups were moved from their demo locations, though.

I mean, most likely the original poster was already going "wow, this is legit" after Nitori's announcement. Did the poster immediately put it up on 4chan, or only release this info to the wild after Tasofro said it's the end of character reveal? I'm sorta interested about that.

Seems the poster first said they knew Nitori was coming in an earlier thread, and only mentioned Mamizou when Koishi was announced. Guess I must thank they for not spoiling the fun of the past few days.

Now this is interesting. Counting 1 and 1 together and the fact that most characters are revealed it can only mean one of two things:
1. He is talking about Mamizou
2. He is talking about the last boss
If it is the latter, that means the last boss will be a returning character! I still root for Shinki as goddess and ruler of Makai!

He mused on whether he should have made more of an effort hyping/teasing his leak. Good thing he didn't!

On twitter, he said he was the main animator on one character, and also worked on Futo. He was quite excited about the reveal of his character, until it dawned on him the reveal is not going to happen. He posted this, then deleted it:

Where I have no problem with Mamizou being int he game, I really hopse she doesn't steal a spot of potential new character
@Hinacle I've had an idea of her using spirits for majority of her attacks. At the beggining of the match, she only has few spirits to work with, but as she becomes more popular, she will call for more spirits, making her attacks stronger or have more range. Her Last Word would her trapping her opponent with her spirits and then unleashing a massive source of energy upon them.

@final boss: The final boss will most likely be playable. Like all final bosses of the previous Touhou fighting games, they have all been playable.
@Mamizou: She is most likely not the final boss.
@Shinto character: While Reimu is a Shinto shrine maiden, she was never shown to be working for Shinto, unlike the Moriyas.
Can Koishi even be contained like that? I mean, if it strikes her fancy she can simply disappear from everyone's sight for as long as she wants...
I don't think that's how her ability works... She isn't invisible or anything. She just has no presence.
For example, if you take Youmu, when she was trailing Sakuya, was talking about how she has no presence, because she is half ghost. However, Sakuya was still easily able to detect her, because Youmu is just terrible at hiding.
My guess now is the final boss is related to Shinto.

What the.....Koishi was a definite surprise. I take it she's been working with Kogasa...
Mamizou....probably to be expected. After all, Nue had to get her to do something after yanking her all the way across the barrier in 10D. Oh, and that means there might be some of those weird shikigami again. Wonder if Ran's going to make an appearance just so they can have a showdown.

Mamizou was implied, but obviously it's supposed to be a secret. "Returning" in this context means "not new to this game". Mamizou would be returning from TH13, Nitori is returning from TH10, etc. For reference, non-returning characters in previous fighting games include Suika, Iku, and Tenshi, who were all introduced in fighting games.

I've been reading the wiki and have yet to find a place in the HM article which states each character's special abilities. Am I missing it completely or they really isn't anywhere there explaining them? I've forgotten how Ichirin's is, and if Reimu's is just limited to her changing sides of the screen.

Ichirin charges up a super-mode from taking damage. Or dealing damage. One of those. It's not really that super though.
Reimu has a slightly larger spirit meter.

Each character's abilities are listed in their bios. Unfortunately , they haven't been keeping track on translating them that much.

Well, that explains it all for me, how Futo is so short-skirted, looking at his PixIv. I just realised that he also posted some "Hopeless Masquerade-styled" pixel art there, but I never bothered because he draws so many 18+ pictures. :V

Suprised to see ZUN/Tasofro letting someone who draws so much porn do some of the sprites, but I think he got a nice job done from the 3, 4 screens we have seen so far. Also, I wonder if he really meant Mamizou by this mysterious character... or was he the one responsible for the boss?

Before I knew she didn't know the God, I just assumed the God was the Dragon that helped make the Hakurei Barrier. Wouldn't that make sense? If the final boss turns out to be that dragon, but as a badass looking dragon girl, that would be awesome

I always though that Reimu's Shrine was sort of connecting point between Gensokyo and Human World. Like, there is one point in the Hakurei Barrier which can be opened and closed without removing the whole thing, and it is located in Hakurei Shrine on both sodes of the barrier. It doesn't serve any other purpose than that, other than make it easy to locate and the guardian of the gate to live there. There mgiht have been a god there before the Barrier was created, but its now gone.

Nah, there's still a god there. Byakuren mentions that she can feel that the god is angry (which she claims to be the reason that the shrine gets so few visitors), Rinnosuke says he knows the name of the god (although considering it's Rinnosuke...), and it can still give its blessing of youkai extermination through the yin-yang orb (which is its go-shintai, according to OSP chap. 17).
And yeah, the Shrine is a point connecting the two "worlds"; IIRC Reimu describes it as being like a wall separating two territories, at the same time belonging and not belonging to both places.

THAT'S IT. Sanae's in Gensokyo, got access to internet thanks to the Kappa, and is a member of this forum since a while. Now, upon hearing the news about HM, she got pretty excited. She thought of who she'd like to include in the game; She picked her favorites (Nitori was an obvious choice. *nods nods*), and remembered that time where Koishi and ReiRisa fought at the shrine and thought "Holy crap this fight was cool I need to be able to PLAY IT". Thus, she used her powers to create miracles to force her into the game!
And then! She was like "Pfff I'll also sabotage those other two loonies" and used her powers again to give Byakuren a silly hat (She's jealous of her gradient hair) and Miko a cape, because Sanae knows every vilians have capes. (But it backfired, making Miko awesome) Finally, after 6 days of miracle working, she took a day of rest.
I knew it. Now all that's left if finding Sanae on the forum. >_>

Aww no Alice, Flandre or Satori :< don't get me wrong nothing against Koishi but I just like Satori more. At least Satori, Aya and Sanae are background characters so they get some form of apperance, lack of Flandre is not really suprising, but possible lack of Alice is upsetting >.> I really wanted a new sprite of her, a new artwork and possibly (more of a stretch) a slightly new design upgrade for her.

figuring out antagonists for the TH games would require some large amounts of luck and knowledge on japanese culture, history, etc.. too much information to derive possibilities from, imho.
I'll disagree with you, though, in that I hope (pun not intended) that the gameplay is solid, fun and competition-friendly, beforehand.
My weird pattern figuring sense says that, as an after thought, HM "has" the "mission" of surpassing the low expectation caused by it being based on Astra Fighters, while DDC also "has" the "mission" of being more interesting, gameplay-wise, than TD. (like KoF XIII had to fight against the backlash its predecessor caused) /TD "bashing"
random thought of today (this one I had for a while, it's not related to or dependent on the release of new games): since it's a possibility (read well, *possibility*) that Mima can (as well as can not) be the shrine's ("evil") deity, it *can* actually make sense, as it's said (not in the touhou canon) that vengeful spirits's (onryo) anger can be placated by turning said spirits into deities. Though even Mima's PoDD profile (which, being PC-98, means little to the current Touhou canon) mentions that her evilness has fallen off from her due to having lived for a long time.
About her goal to become a deity.. one day I looked into a video of her translated ending in MS (and Yuka's), and they seem to be speaking of each other (in my interpretation), regarding how one wanted to be like the other (even though Yuka stalks Marisa, not Mima), and Mima used sheets to "take on a more ghostly appearance", according to herself.. when she failed her attempt to become a god; she doesn't even know, back then, how to become one.
By the way, I'll main Byakuren (if the game turns out to be good), and sub other people (wishfully thinking that Koishi is OP, so that I can pretend to be playing as DotS' Koishi)

What I meant by that was a connection to Japanese folklore. cuc and others have said some stuff back on the previous thread that I forget, but there were various theories about the character being a god or someone posing as a god (I forget which one, because I don't know all of the gods or goddesses). Of course we can't guess the name or anything, but we can guess possibly what the character could be.

Sorry for forgetting to report that. Also I should have made it clearer Chabo is not the main artist on Futo.

RE: culture knowledge: the key with her is her use of masks and dance-like pose. A kagura and noh theme is highly likely, and that in turn implies communicating with gods. Or she can always be a central Asian dancer.

I came across some coding in SA that went by unnoticed by the translators. I took it upon myself to translate it and found that it meant "Final Kisume"
Maybe Kisume was meant to have a bigger role than just forgettable stage 1 midboss. I think Zun intentionally dumbed down her power. I have proof of this too:
According to ZUN, her name is written in katakana to give it an old feel, and it's not written in kanji because "that would make her seem too strong".
I think Kisume being weak was Zun "trolling" and biding time until 13.5 where he could reveal Kisume in all glory!

Well, I believe that it is, what I have dubbed as "Kisume's Lovey-Dovey Heart Throbbing Core<3" Word of warning: You MUST say the "<3" There are many Kisume's Lovey-Dovey Heart Throbbing Cores out there in the world. I also came upon Kisume's profile within the coding of 13.5's demo
Kisume is Touhou 13.5's primary antagonist and final boss, an alien parasite which crash landed in the year 65,000,000 B.C. It was named "Kisume" by Yukari, a word she made up. Kisume came to Earth with the intention of draining its energy so that it could produce genetically enhanced spawn, which would then continue the cycle on other planets. Annoyed that unless Seiga is the last boss, Seiga isn't in the game. Seiga would have been perfect for a game like this, especially with Yoshika shenanigans [Or just Yoshika fighting instead]
Although Soga making it in pleases me. Like Ichirin is a flat and boring hitbox that has some redemption hope in this game [Although she remains a hitbox], Soga is getting some too from her 'Random midboss and final boss summon!'.

You know, on Ichirin, I was a bit angry that she was playable while Murasa and Shou were not, but thinking about it, she makes sense. She's a temple's nun (unlike Murasa) and knows how to fight (unlike Shou, and Nazrin's too cunning for direct confrontation). Hopefully, there will be more information on her role in the temple and her personality in general, since I liked her the least out of the whole UFO cast. (Star Platinum reference also helps :D)

I actually disliked Ichirin the most out of the Myouren bunch as well, but I think this game will make me like her as much as the others. She just got a level up in badass, y'know?

Ichirin's the wheel that guards and is guarded. Maybe she'll end up being like a more plucky less butt-monkey and bombastic Meiling or something (too bad her guard role feels kinda... inconsistent to me now since Kyouko had it in Ten Desires). Now that she'll presumably have her own storyline, we can hopefully at least see more of her personality. UFO barely gave any of it out at all, given that she didn't even have any dialogue in any endings and her dialogue with all the heroines was practically the exact same thing for all six paths and more about the UFO pieces than anything to do with her. She didn't even get a backstory in her profile like Shou, Nazrin, and Murasa did. It took until SoPM to give her one (though at least she finally got one).

This is hilariously true. I do recall Byakuren has different reactions to the character's presence and goals, but it doesn't change much across their two shottypes. Reimu was about her duty, Sanae was kind of a "I guess I gotta fight you lulz" (Byakuren: Srsly.) and I can't recall Marisa's.
Kogasa is probably the most developped character in the entire series, what's with the unending list of quirks ZUN gave out about her.

The Moriya folk appear in the stage backgrounds, so that's unlikely.
Nitori's a member of the kappas that dislike religion, and Koishi is a layperson at the Myouren Temple. Also, her profile said that pretty much joined in for the lulz, or something.
Either way, they both have some connection to religion.

I honestly will be dissapointed if one of Byakuren's spellcards doesn't allow her to use her specials without needing to chant them . I mean, Magician's Sultra Scroll has been stated to have an "auto-chanting" mode what allows her to use spells by just waving it around.

"Before the Gate" can simply mean she's in front of the gate, which would make sense since her job is sweeping there...
But regardless, she's a low-level youkai, and I don't think they'd put someone that they pratically just met to guard the place, specially since they have far more powerful people with them. I always thought of her as an "alarm system" instead of someone that's expected to repeal attacks; you can hear her fighting from miles away, and since she's located at the gate, any enemy would need to pass through her.

I can see a guard at a temple. Especially if it's one with some valuable stuff in it. Museums have guards, too, and they're not keeping visitors at bay. In Kyouko's case, I get more the feeling she's there to do chores, but sort of takes it upon herself to have guard duties.

You'd be right, but don't forget that Kyouko says that she brand spankin' new to the temple. I don't think it would be a very smart decision to leave something as valuable as the vault to a newbie like her.

She's a temple's nun (unlike Murasa) and knows how to fight (unlike Shou).
to think that Cirno (but not limited to) is "more fitting" for a fighting game or "a better fighter" than the war god's representative (*).. I call fraud detection warning on you, Shou :V (even Komachi wasn't supposed to be hitting people with her scythe, but she does anyways)
(*) this reminds me of a 4-koma where either Nue or Murasa (don't remember which) was defeated by Shou in under 30 moves in shogi, because of that
in other news, my guesses for today (anb I haven't even played the demo or re-read the characters' descriptions):
- Reimu = balanced type
- Marisa = rushdown/straightforward type
- Ichirin = heavy-hitter type (reminds me of Fiona, from Arcana Heart series, or Karulau, from AquaPazza; they've got range and damage, but not so good startup and recoveries)
- Byakuren = balanced type (by lack of other ideas), she would still be able to fight without preparing her moves, but would benefit from doing so (play normally or defensively, until you get the chance to prepare skills, then you have one more option for offense or defense, gradually shifting the momentum in your favor, a bit like Arcana Heart's Yoriko's pentagrams/triangle inputs which temporarily power up her moves)
- Futo = zoner or defensive type (getting stronger, status-wise as the match goes on, favoring players who can stay alive longer)
- Miko = either rushdown or balanced or speed-oriented type (I think the lack of defensive features on her would be nice as it forces the player to be able to do instant blocks, and thus making use of the game's system better than it would if she had also good defensive features)
- Nitori = gimmick type (reminds me of Faust, from Guilty Gear series)
- Koishi = zoner (setting up things on the screen for later activation) and/or long-range-type (like Clarice/Scharlachrot/Kamui, again, from Arcana Heart series, who, despite their long-range attacks, have good mobility, but aren't good with dealing with close-range pressure)
if there was to be a grappler type, it could be more probably Nitori or Ichirin. (besides Reimu's last word)
Byakuren could be a speed-type character (from her "super-human" spellcard), in case the game lacks one.
I'd like to see a stance character (could be Mamizou, if she really gets to be in the game), and a heavy zoning character (like Maori, in AH), hopefully Koishi (or someone else) fits this role well.

Not necessarily? Guards are often at gates. This is a thing. Her need to fight "intruders" when she's just attending chores shows, though, that this is not really her official capacity.

Saying Shou can't fight is a bit misleading. SoPM only says she can't fight with the spear, but she has an awesomely powerful laser artifact. Which relies on her "attract treasures" power to get ammo. She's less a brawler and more artillery, but that's still fighting. Although based on how they split up the religious fighting styles (Buddhism = close-range and Taoism = dense shots) I suppose it makes sense to leave her out of this. Lasers sound more Taoist than Buddhist in this context.

My understanding is that she only attacked you out of youkai instinct, completely ignoring her instructions as a student of the temple. Which seems to be a thing.
For what it's worth though, in HM Ichirin seems to have been explicitly asked to look over the temple while Byakuren is away.

"Nuclear landmine" is common otaku slang. Buying a bad anime/game/whatever cultural products, and realizing it sucks is "stepping on a landmine". Calling the most unexpectedly horrible games they bought "nuclear landmines" is the natural conclusion of this analogy.

I just disagree with the assertion that "acting like a guard" means attacking guests randomly. She's "acting like a youkai" which is a completely and totally different matter.
IE: I don't think Kyouko was acting like a guard, therefore I disagree with you entirely.

It's great to have that in mind, and maybe less obvious to those of us who aren't well versed in early Japanese history - he's not pulling all this stuff out of nowhere. In cuc's thread over on TARC of ZUN's twitterings, he gushed like a fanboy over an old master historian he got a chance to meet. It's something I really admire; ZUN's narrative ability to blend historical facts with his personal fictions to create such a vibrant, living world.

I hope they fixed whatever the hell is going on in the second demo of the game. Spell card names are all random gibberish and used to display properly and spell cards have a nice little 20fps lag in them.
None of that shit happened in the first demo. (spell names were displayed with japanese font and spell cards didn't lag at all)

First of all, unlikely to have anything to do with HM's real story, here's a cool painting of a samurai general (Tamuramaro) with 7 divine-gifted oni masks hovering around him.
About the new character, he thinks she's based on Hata no Kawakatsu, who according to legend:
- may have come from China, claimed to be a descendant of the First Emperor of Qin;
- brought kagura into Japan;
- was favored by Shoutoku, and made masks for Shoutoku;
- was ancestor to the masters of noh theatre, including the greatest noh artist, Zeami;
- when people began worshipping a new god (which is in fact just a type of small worm), he suppressed this new religion;
- according to Zeami's book, he became a sennin (hermit), and is an avatar of Bishamoten who helped Shoutoku (the current wikipedia entry wrote his title as a god wrong, it should be 大荒大明神);
- Toriyama Sekien, that artist who loved inventing new youkai (you should really be familiar with this name by now), drew this image of Kawakatsu's mask becoming a mask youkai;
- was believed by a 20th century crazy man to be from a lost tribe of Israel.
Also, his name is mentioned by Cirno in FW.

I managed to catch the last bit of the Reimu fight, and then everything from then on. I will say, I do enjoy seeing how this game turned out to be. Lack of an epic final spell for our mask girl is... a little disappointing, but everything else was perfect. All the arrangements sounded pleasant, and the battles looked smooth and very well done. Plus, Mamizou's Night Parade Spell... no one was expecting that, now were they?
Now to wait for the music to get loaded up onto Youtube and fanart to come flooding in...

I've done various orders from paletweb. Basically once you are done ordering a billing mail gets sent later on that you pay with. From my experience the payment seems to have to be done manually unless things have changed since I last ordered from them.
edit: To be more clear, the billing mail tells you how much you'll be needing to send to paletweb. I usually leave a note for my order number or something along that line. Not the most professional of ordering systems but I've yet to experience problems with paletweb.

Looking at the animation, it can only remind me of "Satori Komeiji's Mental Education" when you get one character to the present, and they are waiting for the other(s) to get there as well. Koishi, Orin, and Okuu all do something sorta like that.
Probably no real connection though, just the first thing to come to mind.
Edit: No wait. Considering the two games, and the character in question... that might be intentional.
Hint: Satori Komeiji's Mental Education was also done by Tasofro.

Are you 100% sure it patched correctly?
If you moved the files from their original install location, then the patch doesn't actually work - the message it throws is "Couldn't find files". It should say 1.01 up at the top if it worked.
Otherwise you're not the only one I know who's had this happen but hey
