Seeing as I recently (like, a month ago) gained the title of Artist+++++ I figured it'd be a good idea to start my own thread (although I have serious doubts on the quality of my own artwork) despite half of my stuff being really old or only half finished. That being said, I feel it is a good idea due to the large amount I actually have.

Constuctive critisism would be infinitely appreciated.

So let's start shall we? First of all, dragons (I love 'em). A full size version of one I posted into the miscellaneous art thread a while back and a pencil sketch that I refined a little in photoshop.

With regards to manga style art, I actually have more, but can never be bothered to finish it, or it looks awful. So I guess this'll have to do for now (again, seen in another thread, please don't hurt me)

Now about the last two works, I can see you are not accustomed to the style yet. Right now, the way the head is attached to the rest of the body is awkward.

I would recommend taking a step back and fix up the neck - jaw joint and the left jaw line. Shift her head right in the first Yuuka piece and the other way around in the second piece.

Also, when in doubt, flip the line art horizontally. For some profound reason I do no know why, mistakes show up quite clearly when you do it and I think it is very useful.

ps. Never doubt the quality of your work. As long as you are interested and persistent, improvements will be around the corner.

With regards to the Yuukas, I must say thanks for pointing that out to me too. I could see something was off but never actually noticed it was that. I suppose the difference in artwork quality comes from a combination of having drawn dragons since I was 6 and just generally sucking at human proportions :V

Just to clarify, I'm drawing the head too pressed back on the neck? And is the solution for me to move or turn the head to the left/right?

I was trying to say the connection between the jawline and the neckline gave off the impression of her head attached little too FORWARD from the neck. This seems to be a prevalent problem in people

who are not accustomed to draw in manga style. Sadly, as an old-fashioned person, I cannot give you tips in working with digital media. However, I would still say SHIFT her head(ONLY) left by 1mm ~ 2mm.

Yeah, I really want to do more in this style but it's totally different to how I normally draw, so it's pretty difficult. Satori is actually my favourite Touhou, which for some reason means I have incredible difficulty drawing her. :V

I know I'm better at dragons and monsters etc, actually I've been drawing them for several years longer than manga style (hence why they are more detailed/generally better). Also yeah I suck at neck/shoulders lol although I haven't posted any drawings with those in that I've done recently (most of the stuff I dumped is old work) I've been trying to concentrate on them as much as possible. (KIND OF SHY SO I TEND TO POST A COUPLE OF MONTHS AFTER I DRAW IT). Honestly I'm not sure why I have so much trouble with them kek, I think (hope) I got better recently though.

I'd like to draw more dragons (comfort zone) but because I'm trying to catch up with animu I've been drawing less of them recently, guess I'll have to treat myself lel

Uh one more thing when you say 'You also seem to work way better without any consistent line-art as your usage of that seems rather lacking in most sketches.' what do you mean? Lineart is something with a finished/cleaned work that comes after a sketch right?

You're probably right, I didn't really find another word to say what I mean.
What I was implying is pretty much just that your lines are messy in a generally unpleasant way, while the sketches that are based on colour compositions work really well and show what you can pull off. I know what I am saying is really confusing, my english vocabulary is rather unrefined, but I hope my point came across. To give you examples, the sketches like Sekibanki and the legless Dragon/Wyvern are really cool, while the sketches done without colours and with lines instead (so the vast majority of the Touhou-characters) don't came out so well.

But yeah, catching up is important. Just don't forget to further work on your roots.

Thanks for the clarification, I guess this is why people don't post sketches lel. I don't let myself use an eraser in the sketch stage otherwise i spend hours fussing over it so the ones I posted are literally just like my doodles, without cleanup or lineart. Maybe in future I should refrain from posting them unless I clean them or something.

I drew preliminary sketches for both sekibanki and the dragon then painted over using them as guidelines, that's their normal purpose so I don't usually bother cleaning them up.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate crit and I'll take note regarding posting unclean stuff.

Yep, the joke was that the neck review happened to happen right after a picture of Sekibanki.
Then again, I'm that one person who drools over Merrys with extraordinarily thin necks (http://shirofox.tumblr.com/), so I don't think I'll make any actually useful feedback there.
