Title: Ask a Staffer Ep. 12 - Edible.
Post by: Edible on May 04, 2011, 04:12:15 AM
Get your questions on.  I'll be here all week.

I ain't got no fancy gimmicks, sidekicks, theme shticks or mind tricks.  I only got answers.

Yes!

Edit: Technically, I work for a contracting agency who works for the government.  But that's true of most people in my field.

Probably not!

In seriousness, what branch/office/etc?

I'd rather not provide too many details here, but it's a major non-military branch of the US.

Quote
Why do you not approve?

High standards.

What's your opinion of public libraries?

Love 'em, but I use them less often now that I can just buy books whenever.

What's the most interesting book you've read recently?

Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings, probably.  I've been rereading The Illuminatus! Trilogy, but it's as convoluted as it ever was.

How did you find MotK?

I joined #shrinemaiden in early 2006.  I wasn't really active on the forums until after the first major wipe.

Quote
How did you become a member of staff?

Just been here a really long time.  Was opped in #sm when we moved to PPIRC, I think.  Then I inherited those rights and became a moderator in an earlier iteration of the forums, forgot to ask for them back in a subsequent wipe, and got them again in another wipe.  Or something.  I'm sure TSO remembers the details better than I do.

Quote
Just what DO you do?

On here?  I mostly just moderate and pay for the forum server.

If I am a Sanderson fan, who else would you recommend for me?

Sanderson's work was heavily influenced by Robert Jordan, IMO, but Sanderson has refined Jordan's tendency towards long-windedness.  On the other hand, I feel Jordan is a bit more varied as a writer.  I've followed the Wheel of Time series since the mid-nineties and it's very dear to my heart, so I try to get others to read it too.  That said, I know full well that Jordan's works are harder to get into.

What's your favourite book to reread every few months, if you have one?

Rurouni Kenshin. <_<;  Actual book-wise, whatever's on hand.  I'll regularly just stroll over to the bookshelf, grab something, and read a few chapters if I'm bored.  Most books have a few exceptionally memorable scenes that I just can't get enough of rereading.

What do you taste like?

Veal, probably.

I imagine Don't Worry Be Happy would fit here, but I'm more likely to listen to something that fits my current mood, rather than try to change it.  If that makes sense.

Quote

Firebenders do lightning, right? <_<

Have you actually had a Pon de Ring doughnut?

Yes indeed.  They sold them at the Mitsuwa I sometimes when to when I lived in Illinois.
I prefer other donuts.

Edit: I should say they sold what were probably cheap imitations.  I haven't had one from whatever Japanese donut place made 'em famous.

Did you read Mistborn?  (as I am currently reading it now and being a person who is not quickly interested by books, this one got me good for now)

How come your avatar has Sabre riding a lion and eating its balls?

You seem to be more of a stalker type on IRC rather than chatting one. Is this a part of your secret governmental spying tasks?

Your favourite Touhou girl... and why (I won't take "she is cute/nice/ze" for an answer).

And finally, an important serious question: Breast man or Ass man.

Is there any specific origin to your user name?

It's a nickname a good friend gave me when I was a wee tot, and I've been slingin' it on the internets for many moons.

Quote
I've been wondering for the longest time: Who's the person in your avatar?

King Arthur.

You can choose one superpower (reality warping excluded). What is it and why?

Teleportation, maybe.  Saves on gas.

Mister Donut seems to be most famous for them, but as you might be able to tell by the name, they are not Japanese.

Did you know that?

I did not!

Do you have any preference for alcoholic beverages?

I generally prefer simpler mixed drinks - rum & cokes, gin & tonics, etc.

Quote
Any specific drink?

Bawls. <3

Quote
Do you smoke?

Nah.

Quote
What genre of video games do you like?

I play more RPGs than anything else, but there are no genres I particularly dislike as long as the game's fun.

Quote
What about movies?

Heist flicks and murder mysteries are probably my favorite genre.

Did you read Mistborn?  (as I am currently reading it now and being a person who is not quickly interested by books, this one got me good for now)

When Robert Jordan passed away, his wife announced that fellow author and family friend Brandon Sanderson would finish the Wheel of Time series.  Having been a huge fan of WoT, I wanted to learn more about the man who would finish it, and someone recommended Mistborn to me.  I devoured the trilogy whole, loved it to death, and now Sanderson's easily one of my favorite authors.  And it has a sidestory coming out soon!

Quote
How come your avatar has Sabre riding a lion and eating its balls?

Because Japan.

Quote
You seem to be more of a stalker type on IRC rather than chatting one. Is this a part of your secret governmental spying tasks?

I'm just not very talkative on the internet. <_< I read chat logs way more than I contribute.

Quote
Your favourite Touhou girl... and why (I won't take "she is cute/nice/ze" for an answer).

Not sure if I have an overall favorite.  Maybe Keine, if I had to pick one?  I like that she's a schoolteacher, which appears to be somewhat unique in Gensokyo and gives her opportunities that the other girls probably wouldn't have, and she hangs out with Mokou (another favorite).  I also like Reimu (sarcastic world-weary money-grubbing miko with indisputable charisma), Suika (great design, hilarious alcoholic STRONGLOLIGIANT antics), and several others.

Quote
And finally, an important serious question: Breast man or Ass man.

Both. :|

What was the last major event to change your life for the better?

Bought a new car last year, that's probably the closest thing.

Quote
Name three people from history, living or dead, that you'd have dinner with and why.

Einstein would interest me greatly.  I'd love to talk with him about current events, the Internet, and the like.  Whether or not it's true I have this image of him in my head as a really great conversationalist.

Assuming language is no barrier, any notable scholar at the height of Roman civilization.  So much knowledge was lost from that time, and it'd be interesting to have a taste of what life really was like two thousand years ago.  (Blowing his mind with smartphones would be fun too.)

If I think of any more specific folks I'll let you know.  Maybe Thomas Jefferson.

Quote
Are you close with your family?

I wouldn't say I'm close, but I'm not really separated either.  I love and respect my family, but they have their own lives to lead - as do I.

Quote
Top five countries you'd want to visit next - go!

Male.

Quote
What do you think your biggest contribution to this forum was? In that same sense, What do you think is the biggest accomplishment of the forum overall?

I don't have a good answer for the first question.  For the second, I think being the largest English touhou forum is a great accomplishment in and of itself.

Quote
##Yuyuko Doll: Pesco?

It's too easy to build a case on pesco to waste a vig on him.

Quote
And finally, How much do you like your job?

Well enough!

What is your stance on killing birds?

SON OF A BITCH BIRDS MUST PAY

I eat way too much meat to be against the wholesale slaughter of any animal, unfortunately.

Quote
On that note, do you enjoy your mod/Admin job here?

I don't really consider it a job~

Quote
What is your favorite part of it, and the part you like the least?

Hard to answer this; as previously mentioned, it's not really a job for me.

You're the one that's supposed to be askin' the questions here! ;_;

What immediately came to mind was "problem" as in "potential violation of rules," but you probably already know that I usually use those more as reminders or guidelines than things set in stone.  I think if everything was cut-and-dry we wouldn't have such awesome discussions about some stuff!

Nah.  Sadly, there isn't a solution to world hunger.

I own a whole bunch of walking sticks.  I also, on rare occasions, find myself inexplicably drawn to NERF guns.  They're still fun. :(

Edit: I also have a set of miyanaga saki bedsheets that I received as a gag gift from a good friend in Japan.  They're too small for my bed, but I've had them on my wall for a brief period of time before taking them down to due them being utterly ridiculous.

What were some of your childhood hobbies? Have any of them carried over as an adult?

My parents refused to buy video games when I was a lad, so naturally I played far too many of them at friend's houses or whatever until I could buy my own.  <_<;  It kind of stuck.  I've been playing M:tG on and off since adolescence - mostly off nowadays, but that might count too.

Childhood hobbies that didn't really last - sports.  When I was very young I was everyone else's size, but as I grew older I didn't grow taller like everyone else, so my interest in physical activities began to wane quickly.  I was still 5' flat in 9th grade.

I was also a boy scout.

I'll still attack a climbing wall now and then, just no actual cliffs.  It's fun, it can be done at your own pace, and it's as much a mental activity as a physical one, thanks to route planning and whatnot.

Which of the above is best for getting rid of persistent weeds? Your choice!

Can I equip any of the RPGs or missile launchers with thermobarics?  I figure an incendiary explosive is the best way to clear out weeds. <_<

Keine is a supybot with added functionality.  I believe you can /msg [KEINE] commands for a list of things to do with her.  Replace [KEINE] with whatever her current nick is.  The command might be "commands" or "help commands" or something; I'd test but I'm not at home atm.

Story oriented games or action oriented games?

What's your favorite of both?

If you made a video game that parodied your life, what would the final boss battle be like?

Story oriented games or action oriented games?

I generally prefer story over gameplay, but I can live with either one.

Story: FF6.  Action: River City Ransom.  Both: MGS (the whole series, but 1 and 3 are my favorites)

A cross between Space Channel 5 and Gurren Lagann.

Nope! :D

If you were forced to eat one type of cuisine the rest of your life(nationality-wise), what would it be?

How important is the soundtrack to the amount of enjoyment you get from a game? Can you like a game despite shortcomings because of a good musical score?

On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, did you like Chrono Cross? :derp:

Where did you end up putting the Saber Lion plush?

You mentioned earlier that you like NERF guns. What's your favorite model?

Bluh.  American? <_<;

A good soundtrack makes a bad game playable, yes.  Does it make a horrible game playable (sup baten kaitos)?  Probably not.  Can always just listen to the soundtrack by itself.

Loved it.  Wasn't as good as I hoped it'd be, but I've played through it multiple times.  Obviously the soundtrack is the greatest in the 32-bit era of gaming.

It is across from my bed, snuggling with inusakuya in her box.

You mentioned earlier that you like NERF guns. What's your favorite model?

Nerf Crossbow is my favorite classic.  Of the recent models, I'm very fond of the Maverick (of course) and the Alpha Trooper.

I wish my soul was immune to the effects of entropy.

Boom!  Immortal and indestructible.

Your relationship with Pokemon?

I play it, if that's what you mean.

Sleeping habits?

Left to my own devices, I'll stay up very late at night and sleep past noon.  As I have a day job, I limit myself to more reasonable hours.

How well do you (think you) sing?

It's the closest thing to musical aptitude I have.  Reasonably well, I suppose.

Fish?

Absolutely.

What advice would you give to a (relatively) newcomer who wants to integrate himself into the community here?

If your house was on fire and you only had enough time to save one thing, what would it be?

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, how would you spend today?

What's the best snack food of all time?

Be chill, don't be a terrible person, know what's kosher and what ain't.

My roommates have made me swear to prioritize their cats over all else.

Spending all my money.

Triscuits.
