Red Eclipse: A free FPS for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
« on: March 24, 2015, 02:18:00 AM »
Several years ago, a game called "Blood Frontier" was released for Linux. Due to creative differences between the owner and the fan community however, the project was terminated. The game was later forked by the lead developer into a new project called "Red Eclipse", which is described as a "Free, casual arena shooter" with "agile gameplay".

Red Eclipse is similar to Quake 3 Arena and other multiplayer FPS. It features several different weapons and numerous maps. Using the map editor, you can make your own maps if you want. Although the single player mode is lacking, the online multiplayer mode is excellent. There are numerous servers to play on, and there are always people online to play with. It is possible to create your own Red Eclipse server, and from several tests I've done, I've discovered that the hardware requirements are minimal and that R.E. servers do not seem to soak up much CPU power or RAM (unless there are a lot of people on your server, of course).

Since its creation, Red Eclipse has advanced to version 1.5, but most people seem to prefer version 1.4 for some reason (perhaps it is because version 1.5 was just released?). All versions of the game are based around Cube 2, which is an OpenGL-based game engine. The game runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux (an official Ubuntu version is available on the Ubuntu Software Center).

Personally I prefer this game to most other FPS' I've played. I find it similar to Quake 3 and Star Wars Battlefront in some ways, but there are a lot of unique aspects in R.E. that you don't really see elsewhere.

Red Eclipse is not very well-known in the gaming world. It is in need of more players. By posting this here on MoTK, I hope to have alerted a wider audience to this game's existence. This really is a game that deserves more attention than it is currently getting.

So, does anyone here other than me currently play this game?

BTW Feel free to discuss anything about Red Eclipse in this thread. I can answer any questions you may have about the game (If I know the answer, that is :D).
