Christmas tree marisa first. Persuasion needle reimu since christmas tree marisa is no more.
Homing ulet reimu for when i dont know enemy spawn placement and stuff, until i memorize the major spawn areas of manor threats, then needle it is.

Needles-Reimu in almost every game for her good concentrated power (still acceptable in DDC I think, though she is clearly weaker) and small hitbox. The only exception is PCB, where MarisaA is my main, though she functions much like needles-Reimu in later titles anyway. Yeah, I prefer forward-focus types in Touhou.

PoDD - Mima (strong level 1, decent scoring potential, pretty good against AI without being op)
LLS - MarisaB (easiest to control where and what you're shooting)
MS - Mima (good speed, good power, a bit of a spread, too good)
EoSD - ReimuB (standard forward shot, strong, good bomb)
PCB - ReimuB (forward shot, good bombs, good cherry gain, strong, doesn't wreck your cherry as badly as other shots when you fuck up.  MarisaA is cool too I guess)
IN - Varies (Border/Ghost teams, Youmu, Marisa are all cool)
PoFV - Marisa (easy to use, I don't play PoFV much at all)
MoF - ReimuC (rewards getting close without being totally useless at a distance like some other spread shots)
SA - ReimuA (it's just good.  Also the other shots either feel awkward or suck)
UFO - SanaeB (good at basically everything.  Her bomb is a bit too much for the poor UFOs though.)
TD - Reimu (I prefer her speed over Marisa's, Sanae is garbage, Youmu too awkward)
DDC - ReimuA (stages are more interesting when you aren't pressing X)

That is generally my go to formula (First 1cc of UFO was with MarisaB and MoF hard with MariC :V)
Exceptions being IN where I usually pick Yuyu solo (does that count as one of those weird shottypes? She definitely doesn't lack power), TD where I will never pick Sanae because she upsets me and MS & PoFW cause there you can pick Yuuka.

Why Laser-types? I don't know. I guess it is because I'm so amused by the MaliceCannon. I don't even like MasterSpark as a bomb.

Reimu, preferably with needles. Simple and effective, shoots straight and deals damage, that's all I want. I'm too conservative for any fancy gimmicks.

My favorite shottypes tend to have a wide-range unfocused shot and either a homing or high-damage foward-focus focused shot. I prefer the foward-focus over the homing in most games [See: EoSD]. Hence why Sakuya shottypes are always so attractive to me, I play Sakuya shottypes in every game you can use them.

Exception is MoF and TD, I just do not get along with Marisa's laser shottypes.

I generally don't favor any character in the games besides Sakuya. And even then, in IN I play the Scarlet team almost always as Remi except for short bursts.
