Oh my god.... can this really be true? I'm hoping it's not a hoax, but it seems pretty legit to me. In that case, I know where I'm going this September...
-
Somehow I figured it was going to be a matter of time, but I thought it would require more effort. Though I will point out last year when I interviewed Konstantin Koptev when he met up with ZUN (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,13698.0.html) back last year. He mentioned about the fact that he talked to ZUN about our fanbase and conventions and mentioned about AWA along with AB and Sakura-con, and ZUN himself mentioned he was actually interested in seeing what the US fan base was like. Though back then it was mostly him "considering the option" but now we know it's 100% confirmed now.
ZUN's coming to the US. My wish has been fulfilled. Now it time for us as the fans to find a way to make his visit here be a welcoming one and one that he will remember. I for one will definitely consider Atlanta as an option now for a planned con visit. (Assuming I get hired back once business picks up)
But yes, this to me is the best news I've been waiting for since becoming a fan of Touhou was to meet the man himself. I will be looking forward to it!
-
I don't live in US, so I have no opinion on this.
It's pretty hard to hoax an announcement.
-
Even though I'm not tin the US, this is a very big thing! I mean, after all these years, ZUN finally says 'hey, why not head to the US for once.'
Probably couldn't ask for more, I guess. So yeah, anyone who does end up going, make sure you make it the best con you can possibly meet at! And don't drink with the man, unless you want to make a fool of your... Wait, maybe that wasn't the best line to use as an example of going against ZUN in drinking contests. :V
But yeah, I look forward to hearing, and seeing pictures, about the whole thing. Guess I can always try and wave a small flag saying 'Come to the UK, please.' Doubt that'll happen... >>
-
Good job, Mint. I knew you lot could do it.
-
I don't think I'd be able to make this event, but all the same hearing ZUN is coming to the US is big news. I hope he enjoys his stay here.
-
I've got fun money enough to fly myself if triangles doesn't come with me
I'mma bring my China figure for him to sign
I'mma cosplay as the motherfucker
I'mma make a special homebrew for the occasion
Anyone know what kind of beer ZUN likes?

Anyone know what kind of beer ZUN likes?
Alcoholic
This is actually my hometown convention as well, having staffed a few times while I was in college. I would be incredibly jealous if it weren't for the fact that I've already met him, but I am starting to consider going back home for that week... But yeah, I hope it goes well for him and people don't act like total buffoons (MINT).
-
Anyone know what kind of beer ZUN likes?
Well from the interview I had with Konstantin, I did ask him about ZUN's favorite beer (since he did meet up with hin in Akihabara last year) and as it turns out he told me this....
He seems to consider Kirin Lager to be one of the smoother beers, and thus tends to prefer it, though he doesn't really have a favorite beer.
-
I'm going to get con drunk with a legend. Just you watch
-
Is there going to be a livestream of that interview/panel (if ever), or just a transcript?
i swear to god this wasn't here when i made that thread
-
Talk about an opportunity! Definitely going to make this a high priority for the year, and will make any effort to go. Should not be that hard considering Atlanta's not too far.
Better not forget this part:
I'm going to get con drunk with a legend. Just you watch
-
So who wants to get in on a pool for the number of people that will ask ZUN for his autograph but won't actually have an official piece of merchandise for him to sign? <_<
-
Good job, Mint. I knew you lot could do it.
We are a special breed, though I am not the one to thank. I'd brought up the subject many a time with the people behind it, but they pulled it off.
We will try to livestream the panel, but I have to see how the internet situation is at the hotel. Hopefully, it'll work out. If the NicoNico or Crunchyroll guys are there, maybe they can help us with that aspect of it as well.
As far as ZUN being in Atlanta, we have plans and ideas to make his stay legitimately welcome; we want him to feel less like an anime guest to an anime convention and more like a Japanese guest to America. Things will work out well.
Edit: I have an Akyu's Untouched Score with Mima on it. Gonna get that signed. Right where Mima is.
-
How'd things turn out with the Kogasa-san person when he went to...Anime Boston, was it? Perhaps some hints for setting up ZUN's visit well could be learned from their experience?
EDIT: On the subject of items to have signed, I've got my copy of PCB ready and waiting, because Youmu. (Also my first Touhou game I owned, so double the reasons!)
I wonder how long the line'll be altogether?
-
You're going to have ZUN symbolically remove Mima from Touhou canon by scribbling all over her face? I approve of this course of action.
-
Gonna have him sign my Reimu figure and sell it for ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
-
Gonna have him sign my Reimu figure and sell it for ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
I'm the one with the unopened ZUN art Reimu figure. I'm going for one hundred BILLION DOLLARS.
-
I should send one of you my copy of PoFV to sign, if for no other reason than it's the only game of his I have that won't run on my comp.
-

I'm gonna have him sign my wife in her China cosplay as well as the fig and then have sex with both
umadbros?
-
I kep asking myself, "What Atlanta?" until I remembered that interview thing from a while ago. It's far enough in advance that I should be able to scrounge up money, so I'll bring my copy of EoSD~
-
Already reserved a room. Gonna host the Official Touhou Room Parties.
-
Those ought to be fun.
As for signing goodies...I have 3 of his music CDs I bought at prior cons, those should work. Or whatever I grab between now and then.
-
Curiously, how often does Zun make trips over to cons in the US?
Also uh, anyone know how signings would work for this? For most places I've gone to, only 'official' materials are usually accepted to be signed by guests. Since Touhou's doujin with a boatload of 'unofficial' items, is there gonna be a hissyfit about that? Might be something to look into if you're going to risk bringing some expensive merchandise that might not be able to be signed? Iunno.
-

This will be his first visit Stateside, so it's a really big deal. He(if memory serves; someone correct me if I'm wrong) never really considered the thought of a Western fanbase, so til recently we weren't even on the radar.
-

We'll be talking with the staff quite a bit about this.
1) I want to absolutely ensure we do not have a debacle like last year where the Touhou panel was confined to a small room that filled up and shut out literally the same number of people, because GAIA ONLINE "NEEDED" OUR OLD ROOM.
2) Since doujin material is so big in the world of Touhou, we'll find out what can get signed and what can't. We will obviously shoot for "within the realm of reason" so ZUN isn't getting flooded with a bunch of H-doujinshi or stupid TOUHOU HIJACK LOL shirts. We will keep you posted.
-
It's also worth noting that most cons tend to limit the number of things you can ask a guest to sign. I'd suggest tempering expectations for getting entire music libraries signed.
I'm half tempted to ask him to sign my copy of Super Marisa World just for the humor factor. <_<

Better yet, RKS.
-
Is anyone aware of how fluent ZUN is with English? I'm wondering if he's going to run the panel and meet his fans by himself, or if he's going to have an interpreter beside him, like Mizuki did at Anime Boston. I need to know whether or not I have to bother my friend to give me a crash course in Japanese. :V

Not sure if it's quite the same, but when I met a voice actor at Anime Expo last year (Steve Blum to be precise), he signed literally anything fans put in front of him. And he was an official guest at the con too, so maybe...?

Learning Japanese to speak with a Japanese person is not a bad idea ever, so you might as well err on the side of "no interpreter", regardless of the final outcome.
-
I think when visiting a foreign country, it is always welcome whenever someone attempts to speak your mother tongue, however rudimentary their understanding of your language.

Well that's especially refreshing to hear. Just how far along are the planning stages anyway?
-

Man I wish I could go there so he can sign my laptop! *shot*
Joking aside, man I'm so jealous, I wish he'd come to Canada one day, more specifically Anime North. I'd actually get him to sign my legitimate touhou game copies I actually have around. Show him much support I have for him because goddamn. (also, I have a japanese friend so he'd help translate things back and forth from him and I if we could ever talk).
Any news if his wife will also be there? Just wondering.

Sooo...no where? :V :V

I have to find out with the actual con planners, but if the announcement has been made, then clearly things are quite underway. I really don't have much power in the grand scheme of things with this, but I do want to get involved and try to make this go as smoothly as possible, so I'll be staying in contact with whoever I can to get all the information we need.
-

True enough. This brings to mind one of Mizuki's comics on encountering another Japanese speaker at Anime Boston.
At the very least, my Japanese-speaking friend will likely tag along with me, so I could have her say a few things for me if I struggle to maintain a conversation.
Funny....I remember asking said friend a while back to teach me Japanese some time, in the off-chance that ZUN would come to the U.S. :derp:

It's probably a long shot, but could you try to see if you could have ZUN's panel NOT be on the Friday of the con? If my friend and I end up going, we'll likely be flying in on Friday, probably in the evening. But then again, ZUN might be able to stick around afterward and hang with the Touhou fans, sorta like Mizuki did.
-
Better yet, RKS.
But that's not as funny, becuase RKS is actually a well-designed game from top to bottom. :C
-
MJP YOU LUCKY FUCKER YOU'D BETTER TAKE PHOTOS FOR ME. >:C

Well, props to you to care enough to be in touch with these guys.
Hey, since he's going to be right next door to you anyway, why not bring down some Carolina BBQ?
-
"Kannushi-san, your work has been an inspiration and a joy to many people, myself included. Kindly accept this beer, unworthy as it and I may be. I humbly ask that you grant me the favor of using this permanent marker to sign my wife's right brea-"
/me is shot
Time to think up a beer recipe that's Touhou enough to stand out but not too different than the Japanese palate...
-
Hey, since he's going to be right next door to you anyway, why not bring down some Carolina BBQ?
Ooh, hadn't thought about that; I was planning in bringing some growlers from local breweries here in NC (NC BBQ is way better than SC BBQ btw)
-
Hmm... I've never been to a con before, but I do kind of want to meet ZUN. Maybe get him to sign my copy of SoPM. And I do have family in Atlanta.
Ah, who am I kidding, I'm probably gonna do nothing. Please ask intelligent questions on my behalf, con attendees.

I don't know who you are but if you get your local punkass down here to meet a living god I'll give you some beer.

=[ I really wish I could go to the US just for this, why do I have to live in Canada
-
You do know the US is, like, right below Canada, right >_>
I mean, it maybe not actually be in CANADA, but you best your ass I'm getting my Massachusetts self down there.
-
Why do I have to live all the way on the West coast. ;_;
-
Well, props to you to care enough to be in touch with these guys.
Hey, since he's going to be right next door to you anyway, why not bring down some Carolina BBQ?
I live right outside of Atlanta now, so...
-
...You'll be inundating him with Coke?
-
But surely you must know how to do Carolina BBQ. Or do you have to be in the state itself for it to work? (My dad's second wife believed this about biscuits; that her biscuits sucked because she was making them in Yankee Maryland and not Good Ol' Tennessee.)
-

It's all about the leylines, man.
Gotta get dat mana in da wheat.
-
On the west coast here as well, so there's no way I'd be able to make it. (especially considering it'd be taking place while I'm at my uni) For those who do end up making it, give us pics please, and a video would be even better. :3
-
I think that he could come to Brazil to drink Cacha?a (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cacha?a), it's very close of USA :o
-
This is absolutely mind blowing.
The language barrier is of concern though.
Also, I like how everyone's first idea of an offering is alcohol. That's gonna be one inebriated con :V
-
Is it my mistake, or did ZUN already mention thinking of going to AWA in passing with someone already? I think some westerner met up with ZUN somewhere and that was part of the conversation, but I sure can't find it.
Now to hope and pray I can get a day off or two despite AWA's proximity to Otakon...
-
I come to Japan and Zun goes to America?! Cruel fate.
He can get beer anywhere. If you really want to impress a Japanese person with food or drink, get them to your biggest, best, most badass steak shop! (and then supply the beers :D)
-

It was mentioned in the interview Totaku linked on the first page of this thread. :V

I wish I had the free time I once did for actually being involved in stuff.
-
Incidentally, those of you interested in going to the con, #conmeido *does* have arrangements. I would highly suggest coordinating with us because we already have a sort of sub block in the AWA block and need to fill it.
-
Ah cool, that makes this a bit easier.
-
You do know the US is, like, right below Canada, right >_>
I mean, it maybe not actually be in CANADA, but you best your ass I'm getting my Massachusetts self down there.
See, this wouldn't be as much a problem if it wasn't a 14 hour drive from here, including the fact that it's generally midterm period for us Uni students.
It was a bit of a pain getting to Otakon last year, dunno if I'm willing to go down again
-
I think when visiting a foreign country, it is always welcome whenever someone attempts to speak your mother tongue, however rudimentary their understanding of your language.
Me: "Nihao. Konnichi wa. Oppamadoka--"
Mizuki Hitoshi: "Hello. Nice to meet you."
-

We do have arrangements under a proposed sub-block. If you make reservations at the Sheraton Suites Gallaria Atlanta OR Embassy Suites Atlanta - Galleria, please state under that you either are part of the conmeido company or if unable to do that, please put that you're part of the conmeido group. If you do this, PLEASE PM me or check the IRC at #conmeido and message any op; this is important. I am working with the hotel to handle the influx of Touhou fans.
There may be a charter bus coming from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

Mint, we would like to coordinate with AWA a lot more closely. I do not believe if the staff knows what beast has been unleashed by doing this.
-
I am. beyond. jealous.
Pics and videos very much appreciated u_u
If everyone's gonna bring beer for ZUN, is he gonna finish everything or bring them all back to Japan I wonder
-
Microbrew sampling? Hell yes, that's a brilliant idea!
-
You do know the US is, like, right below Canada, right >_>
I mean, it maybe not actually be in CANADA, but you best your ass I'm getting my Massachusetts self down there.
Yeah, but I have school :(
-
For those who do end up making it, give us pics please, and a video would be even better. :3

God and grad school willing, if I'm there, I'm on it.
-
Mint, we would like to coordinate with AWA a lot more closely. I do not believe if the staff knows what beast has been unleashed by doing this.
I don't think anyone needs to be coordinating with the AWA staff until we figure out what they have in store. I will get in touch with the directors and see where everything stands with them, and we will provide help only in the event that they ask for it. ZUN's visit to an American con is not an event that belongs to the community at large, so I want everyone to treat it with a certain level of respect until we know where things are in the grand scheme. For now, just focus on your arrangements for attending the con, as we would love to have you. The main Southeast community will conduct communications with AWA and report to the rest of the world, as it were. We're not trying to take over this; we are trying to minimize the possibly of a Western Touhou Community zerg rush and prevent a potential clusterfuck.
All we ask for is patience. We'll keep you posted.
-

No, their BBQ is some ghastly mustard-base concoction with a different cut of the hog entirely. To make good Carolina BBQ you pretty much have to be an old man from this area.
Everyone needs to bring a few growlers from your local breweries for this con. Let's inundate him with great American beer an show that it's not all Budweiser swill.
-
I'm calling this now, ZUN is going to get enough beer as gifts that he won't be able to leave the country without paying thousands in customs or giving some back because even he won't be able to drink it all that weekend.
-

Aaaaaaa I don't know any around here, help me out fellow local :V

Good to hear. Had some fear that this could happen when I first heard the news.

Drunk Aya isn't talking community per se, he's talking east coast convention staffs, like Nekocon, Katsucon, etc.
-
I'm not too sure that I would go to this as there's a few cons and concerts I was trying to raise fund for already, and also (surprise surprise) I'm not really that big of a Touhou. If I somehow obtain enough extra cash, I'd head down with Jana though.
Anyway you guys should stop freaking out about things like it ever being possible for a guest at a con to not speak English and not have an interpreter. Cons provide that stuff people.
-
Now this in an interesting development. How big is AWA by the way that ZUN agreed (or seem to agree) on being a guest at this con/event? Quite interesting.
Imagine if we had teleportation to go to places, travel time? what is that.
-
Looks like everyone is changing their plans like mad to get to AWA from this part of the State as well... I thought about dropping Youma but scratch that I'm still going to keep them all (AUSA, Youma, etc.)
Pretty much decided on driving there. Screw the travel time :V
EDIT: As for my items to get signed... one and only one item: SoPM, hopefully on the page for Sanae.
-
I think driving is for me out of the question.
Unless my car is amphibious, it isn't going to happen. I think I'll send my regards from THE NETHERLANDS.
-
I'm just afraid that we'll screw this up and he'll leave with a bitter taste in his mouth, possibly disliking us.
-
I'm just afraid that we'll screw this up and he'll leave with a bitter taste in his mouth, possibly disliking us.
I doubt that. As long as the organisation is well done and the guests are treated like guests as any invited guest should be, don't see an issue.
-
please state under that you either are part of the conmeido company or if unable to do that, please put that you're part of the conmeido group.
I call chief information officer of Conmeido Company, our motto: "All the no-frills frills that America needs"
I kinda like the microbrew sampling idea. There's a couple of Jersey breweries that make great stuff. As much as I'd like to give the man some brew to take home, the logistical issues could be a burden on ZUN.
Why don't we book a meeting room in the con hotel for this little private shindig? Best-case, we have a nice big beer tasting with ZUN. Worst-case, we have a nice big beer tasting.
-
I just wanted to drink a lot of different beers. Does this "zun" guy like beer too?
There's something important to keep in mind here that most people seem to be forgetting: ZUN is an official guest of the con, not our personal guest. As such we're not going to have unrestricted access to him to do whatever we want.
-
I've actually been wondering about that, since I've heard differing stories about how different cons treat guests. I'm sure they'll want him to host a panel or two, as well as probably hold an autograph signing, but beyond that, what will AWA* really need him for? I know there are some cons where guests are allowed to just be con attendees when they're not on the con clock - is AWA like that?
*Obviously ZUN is going to want some time to himself as well - this is strictly about what AWA will be expecting of him.

Yeah, that's an important word that I left out. Thanks Kilga.

lol his picture on the awa website answers it all XD
I'm just afraid that we'll screw this up and he'll leave with a bitter taste in his mouth, possibly disliking us.
I second Hele's comment here. As long as AWA pulls it off nicely, he might feel like returning to another U.S. con.
@Hele: Since there's no underwater tunnel that connects the Netherlands to Georgia, I guess it's time for a boat cruise from Amsterdam to Atlanta XD
-
Yeah, that's an important word that I left out. Thanks Kilga.
It helped that I subconsciously inserted the word while reading and had to look again to notice that it was missing. I suspect I'm not the only one that did that, so it's no big deal.
-

He didn't have that problem when he visited Europe and I've heard it said that german beer is supposedly somehow special.
I've never heard anything of the kind about american beer.
-
I don't think I can bring Chicago beer with me if I take the plane, but I might be able to if I take the Amtrak...
-
I don't think I can bring Chicago beer with me if I take the plane, but I might be able to if I take the Amtrak...
I could do it for you: I plan to take the 12 hr trek from Chicago to Atlanta via car :V
EDIT: Oh crap I still haven't made a decision of what kind of beer to bring to AWA... suggestions?
-
I heard about this yesterday and entered instant jealousy mode. I'm so far away from Atlanta~
Oh well. I'll just look at lots of videos/pictures/news/etc on it, I guess~

Especially as this being his first visit. I get the significance of the event to the fans; the bridge gapped in the other direction. Access to his physical person isn't something I'd expect. The important thing here is, he'll get a better look at the WTC with his own eyes. I think that in itself is sufficient.

If AWA's like Otakon they won't even allow beer as a official guest gift :derp:

Remember how Mizuki Hitoshi depicts himself as a bottomless pit? Remember what happened when he saw Americans eat (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/1185645)? :V
Please don't break ZUN, guys. I want more games. :ohdear:

Don't worry, some of us are aware that there is more to this sort of thing than alcohol. <_<
-
I just see this as a really good opportunity to tie up loose ends in touhou knowledge... and I don't have to be there in order to find that out.

How many Mima questions will come up......

Oh snap, that's right. Time for all the questions about gaps in plots :derp:

I plan on drinking all of the beer myself. Basically I won't even remember seeing ZUN.

dunno. is there enough touhou fans in atlanta to make ZUN feel welcome? lol. I know that Touhou does not have too much of a big fanbase in the US, especially in some parts of the US.

firstly a bunch of people are probably going cross country to see this
secondly usa not having a touhou fanbase is a blatant lie.

I think 60+ touhous at Otakon dinner begs to differ. And that was maybe half of them. Yeah, it's not a lot, but that's just the touhou fans that *went to Otakon and cosplayed*.

I've seen plenty of Touhou fans at cons I've been to. A good chunk of them show up only for the photoshoots, without cosplaying--the silent bunch, if you will. But if they hear that ZUN himself will be making an appearance, they'll likely all flock to meet him in numbers that may surprise you. And as SasAmra-san said, many people will be coming from all over for this occasion. I myself will be flying there from my school here in Connecticut. :3 (at least I hope so)

At this point it would be pretty much a reiteration of what others have said but oh dear, brace yourself, because we're gonna have a huge crowd of touhou fans from all over the U.S. coming to Atlanta! Ohoho, let the pilgrimage begin! UK says 60+ at Otakon, now include the dozens and hundreds of other fans from other cons in the States (keep in mind I'm only talking about the people who actually cosplayed at these cons!) Let's not forget the "silent bunch" as AJS commented. They are that huge chunk of ice at the bottom of the iceberg, ya know.
Probably the head count at AWA will describe it all XD

There is a good deal to be said about the subject of attendance (among other things). I actually have several ideas for a write-up that I think may be appropriate for this unique situation in the interest of molding mass expectations to be more realistic. That will come later tonight or some time this weekend, though. In the meantime, have a few ballpark figure facts.
- AWA is a Top 10 Attendance con in North America, slotting in at #8 in the US in 2012. There will be a respectable turnout in general, I'm sure.
- While I don't know AWA panel numbers, the AnimeBoston and Otakon Touhou panels routinely get several hundred people.
- There are a non-trivial number of people that go to cons strictly for the programming (EDIBLE). I would bet that there will be at least a handful of people that will attend ZUN programming because he's an interesting thing to see rather than because they know anything about Touhou. Maybe they want to learn more about it.
- There will probably be a lack of out-of-state student-age attendees since the con is at the end of September.

Not only that, but ZUN is at the top of the page for the guests, and all of the other guests are either voice actor people who always end up at cons around the country, and anime industry guests. ZUN is the only real unique guest so far, and I'm sure the overall major hype surrounding ZUN is bound to get him even more attention from newcomers than you'd expect.

I hope someone has a copy of Changeability of Strange Dream handy so you can play his theme (Innocent Treasures) whenever he walks on stage for his panel or whatever.

Precisely what I was thinking. The occasion just screams for the need to play his theme. :V

One of the bigger Touhou shoots I've been to was the one at (https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/30643_10150186934195207_2160362_n.jpg) Fanime like (https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/30643_10150186938725207_3128346_n.jpg) 3 years ago (https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/30643_10150186943695207_2857629_n.jpg) (we were supposed to have the shoot inside but there were too many people, yeah these pics aren't the MOST indicative of it all). There were also 2 different Touhou panels there which both attracted a lot of people. Though I dunno how many Touhou fans there might be around the west coast now/if people that far away would make the trek for ZUN, especially given that it is a con right at the start of the school year for most people.
Anyway point is: there are quite a few Touhous in every region in the US.
-
...possibly of a Western Touhou Community zerg rush and prevent a potential clusterfuck.
This is a real concern, great that it's noted, and I can't wait to see what the actual turnout is.
Also, the man may like his beer, but what's he to do with all that beer? (I mean besides drink his liver to failure) :3c

ha
Terrible puns. I approve.
