Could you relate any Touhou character to something that has happened in this "outer world"?
Say, natural disasters, particular events in your life and etc. We could relate those to a Touhou character's abilities, and come up with the idea that the Touhou chars had something to do with it!
For example
Okuu learned Solar Jam!Yup, Utsuho leveled up and learned a new move. She's way more dangerous now.
