Addendum to: written script
« on: November 06, 2010, 10:07:36 PM »
While I was on 2ch, some anon tipped me off about this quote from 東方求聞史紀 (Perfect Memento in Strict Sense):

魔導書に書かれた文字は、神代ひらがなとも原初日本文字とも言われ、人間が使う文字では無い。

Translation: "The magic books are written in a script not used by humans, but in jindai moji, or another Japanese script without Chinese influence."

I surprised that I had overlooked such an important fact. That literally means that ZUN felt that Gensokyo uses a script other than Japanese Kana.

Or at least their books anyway.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of varieties of jindai moji, many of which seems to have been stolen from Korean and others made up by Japanese nationalists.

http://miko.org/~uraki/kuon/furu/text/sindaimonji/moritune/moritune_list.htm (looks really familiar)

The above one seems to be the script used in the seals.

The scripts claiming to be jindai moji are a strange mix of syllabaries and abugidas, most of which are put together like Korean script(Hangul).
Anyway, I think this would be useful when people draw the paper talismans.

The above script has resembles a piece of evidence I had long ago (when you combine it, as the script is written):

So, that's what I found. But then again, this isn't going to help you much if you don't know Japanese at all. Whatever. Back to 2ch I go.

Before you start bashing me about using information from an anon, I also found the quote in the Touhou Wiki.

The anon used a hard copy of PMSS, it seems. I can't find him for more info, though.

Even though ZUN said this, it doesn't really mean it's an actual language commonly used in Gensokyo. What's used in ancient magic books and what's spoken are two entirely different things. Yes, it does make more sense that said "random scribbles" could be jindai moji. It still doesn't mean that any written scribble is going to be jindai moji. You can continue to believe that everyone knows what they're talking about at any given time and continue to research it, but I'll just sit back and not care about the whole thing :P

It is at the very least interesting that you made that correlation. If it proves to be useful then cool.

I always thought those "magic books" were from Europe or something.

Hmm. I had a better response at 2ch...

Maybe it's because you guys can't use this script?

Maybe I was too unclear on what I was doing and too direct on the mechanics.

Note: most of this reply was moved to another thread, as I felt it deserved it's own. Please read it.
