So yeah I've been playing NetHack a lot lately. I'm kind of hooked on it, despite sucking at it. However, a good friend of mine just ascended for the first time in the game, and I'm more driven to do better and stuff.

Anyway, for those who don't know, NetHack is a roguelike game where you explore dungeons, collect treasures, and die in hilarious, unexpected, and infuriating ways. You can download the game here.

So yeah, let's all play this and discuss strategies and stories here. Screenshots are welcome, as well! Perhaps we can have a scoreboard, if y'all wish :3

Oh, and WikiHack is your friend for learning how to play and such. :3

Go!

EDIT: alt.org has some great information too, as well as how to play on nethack.alt.org via Telnet. :3

Here's a handy beginner's guide, written by Arashi. :3

Also, MotK now has a NetHack and DCSS server! Simply telnet to henrietta.shrinemaiden.org, port 23, register, and start playing!
Once you're registered and have played, you can find your logs and replays here!

Oh, I love Nethack. :D The farthest I've ever gotten is a level or two into Gehennom with a Valkyrie. I haven't played the game in over a year though, and I keep telling myself to get back into it, but I haven't been able to come up with the motivation to get a good run going again.

Oh man this looks JUST LIKE D&D 1ed.

I might try this, but I fear for my social life.

Not only is Nethack in the repositories of my Linux distro, the graphics interface isn't that bad.

I played with the graphic interface for a long time, until my friend told me to start playing on nethack.alt.org, which is on Telnet, and therefore is the old-fashioned look. It takes some getting used to, but it ain't so bad once you do.

What I like most of all is all the commands are right there, to be clicked on, but are labeled with their keyboard commands, so you eventually learn that, too.

It's pretty tough, actually. I died of starvation at Level 4. Apparently eating things you kill isn't always a good idea. Oh well, live and learn!

Apparently my old NAO account no longer exists. Or something. But now I have a new one as Arashi.

Though I may do a fair bit of dicking around locally with graphics and explore mode first just go get my feet wet again.

By the way, for anyone who's got a DS and a flashcart for it (hey, they can be used for legit things too, like this! ^_~), there's a pretty decent homebrew DS port of NetHack too. Also it looks like there's an Android version, though I have no experience with it. Dungeon crawling on the go!

EDIT: Oh, and also you've got me lurking #nethack on freenode again. :derp:

Funnily enough, the Windows version seem to run better on Linux than the Linux version does.

Edit: Will I ever make it past dungeon level 4?

Potentially stupid question: Anyway to get that kinda interface on for non-Linux stuff? (Or any graphic interface, really.)

Yes. Download the Windows version, and run the nethackw.exe file. Under Map, select Use Tiles.

I find it confounding when you've built up a character in hp, level, weapons and armor, only to walk into a dungeon from which there is no exit. Yes, even after using 's' to look for secret doors.
