You know you're addicted to Touhou when... (volume 3)
« on: March 01, 2010, 09:35:49 PM »
You know you're addicted to Touhou when you fill up over two thousand posts with discussion about how you're addicted to Touhou.
Previous thread here.

As for me: In anthropology class, reading an old text on ethnography, I came across the phrase "native faith". I facepalmed.

Today I started reading the Agatha Christie novel "A Murder Is Announced".

The only reason I even know about the book is because I read that it's the source in a way for Alice and Letty's names.

I've gotten bold enough to watch M-1 videos during class while my teacher lectures about terminal angles.

The poor sap thinks I'm actually paying attention.

I'm guilty of this, too. Except instead of watching Youtube vids, I play the games. And instead of doing this in math (because I dropped it :V) I do it in history. Which I actually like. But learning about Baroque artwork isn't as much fun as grazewhoring Kaguya's Hourai Barrage.

Whilst lurking iScribble for a board I could draw in uncrowded, I found a picture that looked alarmingly like Yuka in a brown trenchcoat and gray t-shirt. Of course, that was my first thought, because I doubt it is actually Yuka...

Oh look, I got an image in my signature. Finally.

I read Raisin as "Reisen"

Don't know if that's a fail, though.

And today, while some guys were messing around with the speech feature of the Macs, some guy wrote "Kyle's Mom is a Big Fat Bitch" and made the computer read it. Then I went and replaced "Kyle" with "Ray-moo."

Two seconds later, I heard: "Who the hell's Raymoo?" and I smiled.

ray-moo is an undead zombie

although those who say it are being redundant

zombie is a type of undead

say she's a strangely well dressed example of a zombie

Recently my class had a discussion about a passage in the Bible that featured an angel with a flaming sword, who was tasked to guard the gate Eden.

Yeah, you can already guess who I was thinking of at that point.

Afterwards, my teacher said that there are no weapons in Heaven itself though. I then proclaimed a bit to loudly: "Tell that to the creators of Touhou Project and Disgaea..." (regarding Tenshi's weapon of choice that explicitly came from Heaven, and the angels from Disgaea that use every weapon known to man)

LOL, I put that in thinking that the computer wouldn't be able to pronounce "Reimu" correctly.
Probably come out as reee-muh or something.

I mispronounced Reimu's name as "rai-moo" for quite a while. And Cirno's as "ker-no." Of course, Cirno would probably misread her own name as "ker-no" anyways.

Also, Sanae as "suh-nay." And Keine as "Kee-een." And Mokou as "mo-koo," and Eirin as "eh-rin," and Reisen Udongein Inaba as "gunbunny" since there were too many vowels in a row.

I didn't know proper Japanese pronunciation at that point, so yeah. ><

Is there some guide for pronouncation? Since I pronounce Reimu the same way...
I however pronounce Cirno as 'Cher-no', Sanae as 'Sa-na-e~', Eirin as 'Eye-rin', Mokou as 'Mo-ko~' and Keine as 'Kein'. Also, I pronounce Byakuren as 'Bi-a-ku-ren'. Is that correct? Not sure on Koishi, Reisen and Youmu either. I pronounce those as 'Koy-shi', 'Righ-sen' (as in 'right' and 'high') and 'You-moo'.

The wikia has the pronunciations for a lot of the names, it should appear as a music note next to their name.

I pronounce everything incorrectly though. Still haven't figured out how to say "Gensokyo" right. Right now it's "Gen-soh-kee-oh."

Japanese is pronounced exactly same way every time.
あ - A (pronounced AH, as in "father")
い - I (pronounced EE, as in "leer")
う - U (pronounced OO, as in "cool")
え - E (pronounced EH, as in "kettle")
お - O (pronounced OH, as in "bore")

Every vowel is it's own syllable. So, for example, "Keine" would be "Keh-ee-neh."
"Eirin" would be "Eh-ee-rin."
"Reisen" would be "Reh-ee-sen"
"Youmu" would be "Yoh-oo-mu"
"Byakuren" would be "Byah-koo-ren" (note that "bya" is one syllable)

I also pronounce it that way. Funny thing is, for a very long time I had miss read 'Gensokyo' as 'Gensyoko', and thus pronounced it constantly as 'gen-si-o-ko'. A recheck made me realise my error....

It actually makes it a lot simpler since there are no specific rules about pronunciation, no silent letters, no exceptions to the rule. Everything is pronounced exactly the way it looks.

Don't worry. The correct pronunciations will stop sounding weird in no time.

I myself was made aware of my mispronouncing Reimu's name when someone flamed me for pronouncing it wrong, so I went to check everyone else's names and boy, was I pronouncing them wrong.

But that was before I learned kana, so now I can pronounce all of their names correctly.  :V

I honestly pronounced it Sur-no until a couple months ago O3O

Anyway, my friend was talking to me about this Chinese restaurant he ate at called "Chen's Noodle House" and I smiled. Also, I know the Hakkero has eight sides, but whenever I have an unsharpened hexagonal pencil, I can't help but draw Hakkero designs on it..

When:
I find people who pronounce the name wrongly but let it go since I've succeeded in dragging my friend in to playing Touhou and he has a very bad pronunciation.

Oh and

no silent letters, no exceptions to the rule.

Save the small tsu sound (っ).
...Well I guess that sound is more like a pause rather than a sound...
