Recipe request: Help us compile a Touhou cookbook!
« on: January 28, 2013, 07:00:21 PM »
Hello friends, comrades, fellow-travelers, and all other kinds of forms of greeting for people I may or may not have ever interacted with!

I don't know about you all, but I love to cook.  Cooking is fun as hell and yields things you can eat.  To be honest, it's one of those life skills that is actually useful if you take the class in high school.

There's a whole world out there, and they've got their dishes.  My aim is to work with artists in the community (I've gotten a preliminary statement of interest from our own Leo (http://leomodesto.tumblr.com and http://askudonge.tumblr.com) and test-kitchen the recipes, tweak for simplicity, and make some magic happen.

I'm all for good causes so hopefully we can do profits to a worthwhile charity.

I'd aim to keep ingredients to what's available at standard groceries or at reasonable cost from Amazon - with encouragements to check out local Latin, Indian, and Chinese markets for the good stuff.

The sky's the limit (depending on start-up costs vs. print-on-demand) but I'd love to get an idea of recipes that people would like to see.  Of course, they'll have intros written up in-character!  To spur creativity, here's a couple of ideas that I thought would be doable:

Flamenco Iku Arroz con Pollo
Utsuhoro Wat - Yatagarasu/Ethiopian Spicy Chicken Stew
Rin's Romanian-Rub Skirt Steak
Culinary Herb Gardening 101 with Yuuka
Suika's Key Lime Rum Cake with a Side of Rum
Nue Noodle Lokshen Kugel
Mystia's Pan-Seared Lacquered Eel Salmon
Alice Lemon Meringuatroid Pie
Kawashiro Kucumber Tsukemono
Reisen's Asian Pear Preserves (literally, space jam - I'm looking at you Maullar)

So much of cooking is intimidating but it's time to spread the love and show how easy cooking can be!

Ideas?  Recipes?  I'd love to get things from other peeps.  Share something you'd like to see immortalized in the first (known) Touhou cookbook!

Well, there is this one pretty simple spread recipe that I learned from my aunt that I eat quite often when we've got the ingredients for.
But there's one problem, the main ingredient is cream cheese, and I can't think of a touhou that would fit.

Oh, it doesn't have to be ingredient specific.  Hell, I threw Iku as Arroz con Pollo because flamencoish = Spanish cuisine = arroz con pollo :V

What other things are in the spread?  What do you spread it on?  Who'd be a Touhou of breakfast?  Maybe we could put it for Sunny Milk and give Star Sapphire and Luna Child other breakfast recipes to go with it.  Go nuts!  Tangentialize, have fun!

Well, it's pretty simple, and I usually eat it with crackers. I usually have it as Dinner/A Snack though. It's quite filling really.
It's got Cream Cheese, Pineapple Chunks, Green Onions, and Dried Beef(the kind that Hormel puts in those jars, for those who live in the states.). Paprika's optional, but encouraged.

Dried beef?  Like jerky?  That actually sounds kinda tasty.

TBH I'm mulling over possible Touhous to own it and not quite sure yet - but it sounds too tasty.  Something party-snackish, social gatheringwise, something like that.  Open to input from others as well on this!

It's kinda like jerky, but not. It's also called Chipped Beef.
Since it's party-ish, and the cream cheese acts as a binding agent, maybe Suika or Yuugi? Or you could ascribe it to the Oni of the Ancient City in general.

Well, flipping through the menu....

Cirno's Snowballs - Flavored shaved iced wrapped around a strawberry-puree core

Fresh Country Bread with Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil, and Salt

Watermelon and Tomato Fillet skewers topped with a dressing of lemon zest, olive oil, vinegar, and fresh herbs

Not sure which characters the last two would go with, though.

For the watermelon tomato kebabs - I'm totally thinking Red the Nightless Kebab.  And fresh bread is totally a harvest-goddess thing, nicht?

Encirnoladas.  Make it happen.

Somehow they must be blue and white.  I'm thinking some kind of dessert or sweet enchilada with blueberries and sour cream... this merits concirnoration!

Someone mentioned rainbow ice pops but it's comic gold.  "Flan: you were expecting what else?"

Keep 'em coming!

I dunno, the ingredients for that bread make me think of Italy. And when you think of touhou in relation to Italy, you think of that famous fic, White Rose.
That bread recipe just feels Italian to me, I dunno why. I have a pretty good instinct for this thanks to watching cooking shows pretty often though.

Holy fucking Christ do you know how difficult it is to prepare pomegranate?!   :colonveeplusalpha:

No seriously... you gotta scoop the seeds out and those fuckers fly everywhere.  They also squirt out juice, which does NOT come out easily.  They squirt it out errywhere.

Actually, it's a Spanish tapas recipe.  Still a Mediterranean culture, though.

Sunny Milk's Cereal Milk - This can be done with any cereal and makes for a great base for ice cream and other desserts.  Soak your favorite cereal in milk for twenty minutes, pour off the milk (straining if necessary), and mix in brown sugar and salt to "season to taste".  For a deeper flavor, toast the cereal for 15 minutes prior to the soak.  Sunny recommends trying this with cornflakes first.

If I can find a recipe, I'll put up Luna Child's Spherified Coffee Beans...

EDIT: I'd be willing to find and test recipes.  I've collected quite a bit of research material for my food porn fic, some of which might be useful for this.

No way, pomegranates are the best fruit.
You're just doing it wrong. You're supposed to cut it in half, hold it over a bowl, then hit it with a mallet.

Is this trolling?  Am I being trolled?

I'll give it a shot but only if you agree to clean up my kitchen afterwards :V

It's not trolling.
Don't whack it with the mallet or anything, just tap it repeatedly so the seeds fall out.

This is a pretty interesting thread! I've been interested in cooking lately, so I'll try to see if I can find anything.

By the way pomegranates ARE best fruits.

Let's see...Why are the rest of these recipes having to do with Mystia? Did someone let Yuyuko near the book again?

Sorry. Had to make the obligatory "Yuyuko eats Mystia" joke.

I don't think Yuugi would appreciate that.
