To me part of what makes the current Super Metroid Any% races so exciting is that understanding that the race can end at any time, especially with this new route (the old route is still around for people who aren't in the 50:00 range and is safer). It's the penultimate game and arguably the biggest game of every GDQ. Also the runners can allow saves if they so choose but they agreed not to (and to also not get any safety energy tanks). If they say "no" then you can argue that they can go with "who got farther faster" as a tiebreaker.
Also official new SGDQ record was reached right before the Smithy fight, meaning we get SM64 race. It's hard to believe watching SGDQ for the first time in 2013 that we'd get to the point where we'd increase the donation total by around 5x in 3 years (it was ~$250k that year).
