MARIBEL HEARN QUEST: ACT II

>You are Maribel Hearn.

>You are a 19 years old university student majoring in psychology living in Kyoto, Japan. For a significant portion of your life you've caught glimpses of a land called Gensokyo in your dreams. Additionally, you were born with an ability to see boundaries, something that isn't normal for humans. You've kept these aspects about you secret for many years.

>Recently, these powers have been intensifying, and you've gained the ability to open and close tears in boundaries. Several days ago, you and your best friend, Renko Usami, entered Gensokyo using such a tear...

>Then things went downhill quickly. There were two shootings, and one of the victims was Reimu Hakurei, a shrine maiden you met within minutes of entering the realm. You found out, to your horror, that Renko was the assailant... You then met Yukari Yakumo, a youkai with powers similar to yours, who taught you basic danmaku, and assigned a cat youkai named Chen

>Later, after much searching, you found Renko again. You learned that she had been manipulated by an untrustworthy archangel known as Sariel. She had told Renko that her long lost sister, Sumireko was being held prisoner in Gensokyo, and that Reimu was the one keeping her imprisoned, which led to Reimu getting shot and put into critical condition. In actuality, Sariel merely wanted Reimu out of the way, so she could create a storm of pure chaos in order to draw out a real threat, another archangel by the name of Uriel. A plan that turned out entirely unnecessary, as Uriel did not respond to it.

>As you got roped into the angel's agenda, the three of you confronted Uriel head on, in the process, you found and released Sumireko. The confrontation ended with both angels heavily damaged, as Sariel sent you back to Gensokyo, where, after passing out from exhaustion, Yukari sent you home without Renko, and said you can return and stay in Gensokyo once your powers fully manifest. As she did so, she curiously dodged the question when you asked her if she could be your mother, a person you never knew that left your family soon after your birth...

>However, that's not the most upsetting thing that came from that experience. Over the course of your time in Gensokyo, you and Renko decided to turn your friendship into something more... intimate... Not only were you forced to leave the one you loved behind, but you also never got to say goodbye...

>You have spent nearly every free moment since then experimenting with your powers, hoping that they manifest faster than the few years Yukari said they would take. During this time, you discovered that danmaku doesn't work outside of Gensokyo, and you can't seem to practice the little skill you have in flying either. On the positive side, the tears you make seem much more stable now, and you can create larger ones without expending as much energy. You've also stopped having dreams about Gensokyo, which you've found concerning... Your concern for Renko's safety, which has been eating at you every day, is also becoming too much for you to bear...

>Therefore, you once again find yourself outside the boundary. It has now been three days since you left Gensokyo, and the only thing on your mind is Renko and her sister. You have to see if they're alright!

>What do you do?

>Where do we live in the outside world?
>You live in Kyoto, Japan. In a small house near your university.

>Yukari guaranteed their safety though...
>You remember Yukari promising to keep them safe, but you would still feel much better if you saw them for yourself.

>Attempt to dream about Gensokyo while still awake. Do we still have this ability?
>You concentrate, and see a flash of... something? You couldn't quite make it out... However, it was something, the last time you tried this since your visit to Gensokyo you got nothing. Perhaps it has to do with your proximity to the barrier...

>You walk up to the barrier until you're right next to it and concentrate.

>...

>You find yourself on a rugged road. The sensation feels like one of your dreams. You've done it!
>You don't know how much use this would be to you, though... You can't really interact with anyone in this state. You're still entirely unsure if anyone can even see you. Aside from the occasional predatory youkai that seems to notice your presence, despite not being there physically...

>Look around.
>You seem to be on the side of a mountain, you can already see a fair amount of locations from here.
>You spot the Human Village a long way from the foot of the mountain, and at the very edge of your vision you see the woods at the base of the hill that contains the Hakurei Shrine.
>You also see a peculiar yellow splotch, as well as another forest, with a small structure right outside of it.
>All these locations seem like they'd take forever to get to, though...

>The road continues to ascend, and seems to head for the summit. You think you're about 3/4s of the way up the mountain.

>A road... try to get to higher ground for a better view of our surroundings. Perhaps we can find a place we've been to before.
>You begin to ascend the road, looking for a better vantage point, eventually reaching a rock that protrudes from the mountain like a ledge. You still can't seem to see anything farther than the woods at the foot of the Hakurei Shrine steps.

>By the theory that this is a dream, we should be able to influence it greatly, right? So, try to imagine ourselves flying, like how we managed in that strange place Uriel was, rather than just in Gensokyo.

>Usually influencing a your dreams in such a manner doesn't work, but you decide to try it anyway.
>You try to imagine yourself flying, and you levitate off the ground, move a few feet, and actually manage to do so, albeit at a snails pace. However, the sensation feels less like it's an effect of a dream, and more like the sensation you got when you were "flying" for real during your previous visit...
>You still don't think you could get anywhere quickly at this pace, though... You can't seem to go any faster without losing your aerial balance either.

>You step back, and proceed to watch as a massive beam of light, like a thick laser, shoots out of the parasol. The fairies notice it too late and most of them are vaporized on impact. The one with the bouquet, who managed to dodge better than the rest falls to the ground with what looks like almost all of her right wings and some of her right leg missing.
>The woman opens the parasol once more and begins walking towards the spot where the fairy landed.
