The 2nd Chinese Touhou Popularity Contest
« on: October 11, 2013, 11:15:39 AM »
Many Japanese Touhou fans have gotten really interested in this contest so even they are anticipating its results with bated breath. I suppose that makes it qualify as newsworthy on some level.

The 1st Chinese Touhou Popularity Contest was held in 2012, with actual voting taking place from July 24 to July 30, receiving over 6000 votes.

For the 2nd contest, the voting time was from October 1 to 7, 2013. Due to various circumstances, there are over 7000 participants, but only less than 6000 of them actually cast their vote. However, this time the statistics breakdown is even more in-depth than the last time.

The highest DDC character being Raiko, on place 38.

It's somewhat depressing, but oh well.

I'm now adding info on the 2nd contest to help you read it. I've also updated the character cheat sheet, so all eligible characters are included, even the evil dragon from FS.

The most enjoyable part about this contest is the really detailed statistics.

This is only peripherally related, but how do Chinese fans know how to pronounce the Japanese names? They seem to be written with the same characters. Excuse me if this is horribly ignorant: I don't know much about the Chinese language.

It's a good question.

Almost all names in Sinosphere languages - Chinese variants, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc - can be written using Chinese characters. When speaking Chinese, these names will normally be spoken entirely using sounds of these Chinese characters, regardless of their original pronunciations, so Yakumo Yukari and Toyosatomimi no Miko (even though both names consist entirely of "native Japanese" words) become "Bayun Zi" and "Fengcong'er Shenzi". As far as I know, in modern days the non-Chinese languages do that to Chinese to some degree, but don't do it to each other. This creates some interesting issues.

Because in any one language, a Chinese character can have more than one pronunciations and vice versa, when encountering a Sinospheric name written only phonetically, such as a Chinese name written in English or a Japanese name in katakana, a Chinese translator has to guess what the characters are, and can sometimes be forced to assign characters arbitrarily. This inevitably leads to many funny situations, such as when a translator fails to recognize a famous Chinese historical figure, or when the official Chinese translation of a manga character's name is proven wrong when the mangaka releases the canonical kanji writing.

In the case of Touhou, the kanji for Nitori, Koishi, Hatate, Wakasagihime, etc had to be guessed.

This resulted in three common variant names for Nitori: 二鳥 似鳥 荷取. There were two for Hatate: 極 and 羽立. It is recently decided that neither are correct, and the correct one is 果, following the tengu pattern of putting their names in the titles of their newspapers. This is used in the 2nd contest, in hope of spreading the correct writing.

Another thing. For Japanese, because the kanji writing is essentially only one half of a name (often the half that carries more meaning), with its pronunciation being the other half, a Chinese transliteration and a phonetic transliteration will each retain only half the information. Suppose there are one Chinese and one American, neither knowing any Japanese. For any given Japanese name written in their own languages, the Chinese will only know what it approximately means, and the American will only know what it approximately sounds. Unfortunately, the American gets the short end of the deal.

Actually, that's exactly why the cheat sheet above was first made: it was for Chinese Touhou fans in America, so they can communicate with American fans.

Being Taiwanese, I can confirm that Chinese and Japanese pronunciations are not the same, even if they occasionally use the same characters (Simplified/Traditional Chinese and kanji).  The only times when they sound the same is when the Chinese name uses a transliteration of the Japanese name.

UPDATE: Should be complete! Sorry, unlike Rika's machines, "Five Magic Stones" are generally not considered a character in the Chinese fandom.

Well, then, immediately this contest is moot to my interest now. The Five Magic Stones inadvertently got me a ticket to obtain ZUN's autograph; they should be given the decency to be considered a character~! /half-joking  :V

Hakurei Reimu is quite strong among chinese fans as well.

As far as I've poked my head in on these popularity contests, Reimu always wins--no matter who is voting. (I have my opinion on why this might be, but I'll keep my mouth shut.) What I just do because of this fact is look at all of the characters listed directly below her for the answers I really want to see. :derp:

Probably, though that isn't always the standard reason. We've seen plenty of example where the main character is not even popular at all. (Bleach, lolichigo).
