probably my lack of skill at the game but that's not so bothering

at one time I was upset about fanbase but then again if I don't like it I don't approve it as part of that character (ex: aya being a slut) so I don't pay attention at all.

Yuri well....depend on how aggessive it gets D:

A few months ago, most of the fanbase ruined almost Touhou for me, I really couldn't stand the idiots >.>

But now I just simply ignore them, don't read their horrible fanfics, or don't read their horrible horrible RP posts (you can't believe how terrible some of those RP posts are (in other sites, haven't read any here)). So hopefully, nothing can ruin Touhou for me now.

I like Touhou, why would I let something ruin it for me? If my like of Touhou could be ruined by something, then it just means I didn't like it all that well. There's always going to be part of the fanbase that seems like they're dedicated to ruining it for everyone else, but who cares about them, right? Let them suffer in their own pot of misery, I'm having fun with the world of Gensokyo and the people that populate it. :3

"Ruin" Wouldn't be right word for me to use...
Not in the sense of making me 'hate' it, but it did make me question the quality of the whole thing in general.
- *Almost everything already listed* (Bar the Yuri part, I think a little mutual love here and there makes it interesting, not "ALRIGHT! INCIDENT'S OVER!!! LET'S FUCK!!!")
- Yukkuris; Sorry, I just don't think I can get used to them... And their voices... Stuff of nightmares D:
- Faceless anon rape, all of it. Yeah, that can be put in the "Ruin" secton
- Various memes e.g. Tenshi and Koishi, And Iku apparently only being good for doing that stupid pose, Remilia's pathetic "Uuu~" identity
- The fact that being a guy obsessed with Touhou makes said guy homosexual. What is this I don't even...
- Weeaboos...

I never understood how the fanbase and fan works could "ruin" something. I can stand quite a lot of stupidity and rather appreciate the good stuff than let the bad get on me. If the fans are too unbearable (like I did with the Final Fantasy fanbase, which is... completely awful to put it in a nice way) then I just turn my back on the fanbase, but that wouldn't harm my enjoyment of the actual work in question.

Koishi being obssessed with penises.

MA'AM I'LL LET YOU KNOW THAT-

...

...I'll have to agree with you. I rather like her to be known as the happy-go-lucky, mind-raping, random girl of hilarity, not a dick-loving loli :(

Other than that...nothing else really. Especially the fact on how many people accept touhou in general on the internet (for the most part). Yeah sure...memes may get annoying, but it's nice to know that it's popular enough that it can generate so many memes for a single game series :V

There are several things that annoy me but nothing that has almost made me stop playing the games.
I like a lot of the fanbase but some of it is just infuriating to see:
Suppatenko
Koishi's obsession as mentioned above
Weight gain pictures get an honourable mention. I can't really explain why they annoy me, they just do.

I love reading fanfiction though, as long as it's not horribly written.

Also it saddens me that no one who I know in real life actually plays the games. I have a couple of friends who introduced me to Touhou but they've never played anything to do with it so I can't really talk to them properly about it >>

Well, he was an ex-fan, as you say. And you know, a paranoid schizophrenic. I mean it's not like Charles Manson ruined the White Album for me.

Anyway, on topic: I just realized that I think Chen is one of my least favorite characters in Gensokyo in large part because of the shrieking of her name in fandom. Or maybe because that shriek just encapsulates everything I already disliked about her, I can't tell. But as I never liked her in the first place, I guess it doesn't really count.

The only thing that (slightly) depresses me is my skill at the games. Despite playing them for a very long time, I'm pretty bad at them. I've learned to accept that, though. As for fanmade content, I can tolerate anything, and actually enjoy most of it. I'm pretty impartial to most pairings, so I don't mind anything in that regard. And the way other Touho fans behave is probably the last thing I care about.

Oh yes, there is one thing: Touhou internet memes. Although they have no effect on my liking for Touhou in general, I simply cannot stand them.

Well, as much as I like yuri, I certainly don't forget that.

Actually, considering that the characters are mostly... not the most sympathetic bunch (more directly, they are mostly horrible people and the characters that aren't suffer under the horrible ones), even friendship seems quite much for many of them. Reimu strikes me as someone who merely tolerates other people/youkai instead of genuinely liking them. And even then only because she is rather apathetic towards others and doesn't really holds grudges.

Really, I can't help but see genuinely affection between the characters as fanwankery in general, even when it appears in official mangas (it's questionable how much control ZUN takes over them anyway). Romantic feelings more, of course, but also friendship. However, that goes for other way too. Nobody really seems to hate each other.

Crack Pairings:
I can deal with the yuri, but crack pairings are annoying. If you're going to do yuri, at least try to make the pairing make sense. Please and thank you. Very few things annoy me more than a cheesy crack pairing.

Guro/BDSM
OH I REMEBER THIS. I remember how much I hate this. I hate it with a passion. The ONLY characters I don't mind doing the latter of those two is Yuuka/Tenshi, mainly because it makes sense. (See crack pairing beef above)

Memes:
Some memes I don't mind, especially when they are done well. The problem is they are rarely if ever done well. So yeah, you can understand my general dislike of memes.

Koishis 'obsession'
No, don't feel like going into detail. So I won't. Because I probably don't need to. I like my Koishi as a happy-go-lucky serial mind rapist. Thank you and good night errybody.

The problem isn't the yuri, though. The problem is, most people don't know how to write erotica of any sort. If you go to sites like Literotica (which is, it should go without saying, NSFW) - supposedly the cream of the crop in erotic fiction - you will still find a lot of stories where the plot is used as an afterthought, to prop up a clumsy, protracted sex scene that amounts to "Character X put Body Part Y in Character Z" over and over, culminating in some rushed ending. Good erotica cares about the basic principles of good fiction first and foremost: that the writer make us care about the characters, that the story compels us to keep reading, that we are left feeling time was well spent. The sex scenes in good erotica put more attention to the thoughts and feelings, both emotional and physical, of the characters involved than it does to what their bodies are doing.

Touhou yuri is no exception. Much of it is very, very bad. But there is some good Touhou erotica (I gave it a shot once). Some of the vehemently anti-yuri folks seem to be so because they love their characters so much that they don't want to see them in sexual situations. And I can understand that, and all, I just think that when people say they dislike yuri, most of the time it's not because it's yuri; it's because much erotica out there is, simply, badly written.

It's funny that a lot of what people have said have almost ruined Touhou for them are things they don't even have to subject themselves to.

The great part about Touhou is that the characters and world are so loosely defined that there is absolutely no problem with having your own, individual outlook and perspective on them. You don't even have to so much as touch the fanbase to do this. To each their own. I, for one, do enjoy the occasional yuri pairing and doujinshi; but that's my private business and my private tastes, and really doesn't have anything to do with who I consider the characters to really be. Seems like there's just a lot of "the porn ruins it for me", but seriously, rule 34, internet, deal with it. Toughen up. I don't particularly appreciate anon penises everywhere in my art of nekkid Touhous, but I have enough sense to just pass over it and ignore it.

Also, there's always Safebooru. Give it a shot. It could change your world!

For the record, this isn't my position on the matter, as I'm perfectly fine with seeing the characters in sexual situations
Spoiler:
and I admit to seeking them out at times
. I dislike Touhou yuri (which I am using in this sense to refer to any romantic pairing between the Touhou cast, sexual or otherwise) for the reason I stated earlier: it seems to completely disregard what I consider to be the more likely possibilities of strong friendship, or devotion, or hell, even outright hatred sometimes. It reminds me of the middle-school concept of "if you sit next to this person, you have a crush on them" that I absolutely loathe, and the reasons for most pairings are about as sturdy as that.

Someone once told me to look at the dialogue between Marisa and Alice in Imperishable Night to prove to me that they were in love. I read it, and the first thing I realized was that I have conversations like that with my best friend IRL all the time. So either I'm suddenly homosexual, which I know I'm not, or this person was completely mistaken. Similarly, people have told me that I must be crazy to think that Sakuya doesn't want to get in Remilia's bloomers or Utsuho and Rin for Satori in a similar manner, because there's no way anyone could be so devoted to someone without loving them.

It annoys me to no end as the huge range of possible relationships are ignored in favor of the cliche yuri option. Relationships are often complicated, and there are many different kinds and degrees of love; the love of best friends, the love of a pet and a master, the love of a mother and daughter, or combinations of those. To see the potential complexity in Touhou be devolved into generic romance on the basis of what I feel are shallow reasons or outright lack of observation and examination is something I feel strongly opposed to.

Still, even then, as I stated in another topic, this isn't going to ruin Touhou for me at all. I have my Gensokyo, you have yours, everyone's happy. It's just a part of the fandom that irks me, but we all have something about it that does that. Someone probably hates my mindset on the matter, and they're entitled to that opinion.

Yeah, like I said: bad writing. Generic anything in writing sucks. I fully appreciate this. Unfortunately, let's face it - fan fictions writers are usually untrained, and so they fall back on writing templates. So whether it's combat, comedy, adventure, or erotica, it's going to read flat and clich?d.

Regarding the yuri, I love girls kissing each other and have less than zero problem with that (by all means go ahead), but I do dislike the notion that that romantic love has to be the only facet of their personalities we see. It leads to all kinds of nasty implications: the idea that these aren't competent young women making it on their own in a magical realm with interests and talents beyond the bed, that their entire personalities can be pared down to "she has the hots for this other girl". I don't like reducing complex characters to only a few traits on basic principle, even more so when those traits tend to be projections on the part of fans.

And so I don't repost my entire short essay on why we as fans should remember that there are other forms of love beyond just sexual desire, I'll just link it instead. (Bottom of the post.)

You see i think the worst part of the touhou series is that some fan just says every other bullet hell game is EASY and a RIPOFF from touhou, i think to become touhou fan you need to respect other bullet hell series too.. because what importance is the gameplay, unfortunately some fans just like the fact that touhou is the ONLY great bullet hell series.. and dislike and disparage any other bullet hell series, which is kinda wore me down, since i become a touhou fan because of another game that is a bullet hell series and the game itself which is posted on newgrounds, kong, etc. usualy the one that is made by the touhou "fan" always keep saying,"this game is a ripoff, it doesnt have many bullet which make this game easy as fuck, the gameplay is sloppy, " I honestly hate that
