>AH CRAP GET IT OFF GET IT OFF GET IT OFF!
> You flip the frickity frick out trying to shake the monkey or whatever it was that jumped on your back, but it's just giggling and ow there's an arm pressing into the bite wound! Harami, meanwhile, is watching with a bewildered expression.
>Judu-flip it over your shoulder!
> All right, enough's enough! You use a judu-flip!
> ... Unfortunately, neither are you that well trained as a fighter, nor does the Judu-style actually exist. Trying to throw the thing over your shoulder results in you overbalancing, and rolling head over heels. So, now you're on your back staring at the blue sky, you're pretty sore, you're pretty embarrassed, and the only good thing that seems to have came out of that is that your attacker is now underneath you. Who the heck jumped on you anyways?
> "Owowow... Sango-chan, you're heavy~"
> Oh. It's your mother.

> ...
> What.
> Well, "foster mother", more exactly. Suwako Moriya is some sort of entrepenuer who owns a couple of businesses off of the island, and spends a lot of time goofing around (pretty embarrassing for a woman in her thirties) whenever she's not on business trips. She also owns and lives at the Moriya Shrine and the property it sits on, though she doesn't do any ceremonies; that duty is left to the head priestess, Kanako Yasaka. She adopted you and another girl when you were too young to remember, and you spent nearly your entire childhood at the Moriya Shrine.
> Get off of Mom.
> You roll off Suwako (you haven't called her Mom for a year or two) and climb to your feet, Suwako following soon after. She is a tiny woman, barely taller than Harami, dressed in a purple skirt and a white button up top. Really, if it weren't for the fact that her face was beginning to show wrinkles around her eyes, you'd think she was a middle or high school student.
> "My, Sango-chan, that's no way to greet me after so long," she remarks as she picks up a wide brimmed straw hat off the ground and dusts it off. "You never come by anymore, so when I saw you coming up I just had to greet you!"

>"Well, I've been busy with school and stuff..."
> Suwako seems amused by this response. "Oh ho, so Sango-chan is finally cracking into those books? You're probably too busy playing in the water to do math or write papers for your professor, right?" She then arches an eyebrow at Harami, who have been watching you two in curiosity. "Oh? Now who is your friend here?"
> Harami blinks in surprise, but regains her composure quickly. "Oh, I'm Harami, a distant cousin of Sango's. She offered to take me in because my parents are... are splitting up..." Harami breaks out those impressive acting skills you saw from her last night: her lip is trembling, and you can see the start of tears. "A-and when she heard how mean my mother and father were, she told me to come straight here...!"
> Another eyebrow rises, and Suwako turns to look at you. "'Distant cousin', eh?"

>Wave a hand at Harami. "This is my mom. We have to tell her the truth."
>"She's actually a bum I picked up off the streets a couple days ago. See, there was this car that ran a red light, and she dived out and pushed me out of the way. And I felt really bad for her, so I snuck her into the dorm and got her cleaned up and stuff. Trying to pass her off as a student and give her a good place to sleep until she can get her life back together."

Trying to pass her off as a student and give her a good place to sleep until she can get her life back together."
> Harami is surprised. "Y-your mom?" She seems rather embarassed that she tried to pull that line on your own relative, and hangs her head.
> Not as embarassed as she is when you spin your own story about her being a homeless vagrant: her chin is tucked into her chest, and her hair is covering her face. Suwako is looking between you and her during your wild tale, her expression shifting from amusement to surprise, then to pity. When you finish, she exclaims, "Oh, you poor thing!" She then wraps the surprised Harami into a hug, pulling the princess's head into her chest: it looks uncomfortable, since Harami's nearly as tall as Suwako, so she's forced to lean forward, arms waving wildly. "A poor cute girl like you living on the streets? We can't have that! That's a good girl, Sango-chan, following my example! Though, you should've talked to me or Kanako, we would've done something to help! In fact..." Suwako taps her chin, ignorant to Harami's discomfort. "Yeah! We can get, ah, Harami-chan, was it?, set up in school! Then her rooming with you and your friends won't be an issue, and we can work on getting paperwork set up, I'm sure they won't mind us fostering another girl, though with all the network and phone problems we've been having..."
> It looks like Suwako's taking this pretty seriously, in her own way.

>"Well, uh, it'll only be for a couple weeks, at most."
> Suwako narrows her eyes at you. "You mean you're going to kick a poor orphan out on the streets when you're done with her? I raised you better than that, Sango-chan!"
> Harami coughs into Suwako's chest. "Ah... I'm not an orphan, and what she means is that I'm going home then. Um... I wasn't lying when I said my parents were divorcing, and I ran away from home and stowed away on a ship heading here. Then all of the weird stuff started happening, and Sango saved me..."
> Suwako blinks, and lets go of Harami, much to her relief. "Oh, so that's what's going on... Sango-chan, you shouldn't've lead me on like that!" She sounds a bit disappointed. "Still, it wouldn't be a bad idea for Harami-chan to go to school with you for the time being, if only so Miss Hong will stay off your back. And I can vouch for you two if anyone questions it!" she adds with a wink. "Or, you can come back to the shrine and stay there, if it's too crowded at your room. We'd be happy to have you back!"

> Suwako plops the straw hat on her head and stretches her arms. "Ah, not much~, just lazing around the place. Got back to the island a few days ago, so nothing should really come up for the next week or so, and I bet the phone problems'll be dealt with by then. Kanako's as cool as a cucumber as always, since she doesn't even bother with the internet anyways, but Sanae's already getting on edge, the silly girl," she giggles.

>Walk along.
>"Yeah, Okuu's pretty irked, too. Messed up some project she was working on."
> You start walking along the path, and Suwako skips along beside you, with Harami following more sedately. It's an interesting sight, seeing the older woman act childish and the child princess act like an adult.
> "Oh, Utsuho-chan? Hm... well, she's a smart girl, why don't you tell her to stop being a hikikomori and work on something, stop wasting time on the internet? No use in complaining when she could get hands-on on whatever project she has in mind." She gives you a flat stare. "And don't even think about getting 'hands-on' with her, you're too young to be thinking about that kind of thing."
> Harami blinks in confusion. "'Hands-on'?" Suwako grins and shakes a finger at her.
> "And you're definitely too young for that, Harami-chan."
>What do we know of Sanae?
> You've known Sanae your entire childhood, what with her being your "sister". To put it bluntly, the two of you loathe each other, and you have as far back as you recall. Sanae is treated as the school's idol: pretty, stylish, popular with everyone, top of the class, and everyone adores her. You yourself are kind of popular, but that's mostly because of your status as the school's champion swimmer: most other things, especially classwork, you're pretty far behind Sanae, and she lets you know it, constantly.
> Sanae is half of the reason why you moved into the school dorms in the first place: nowadays the two of you can't talk without her starting an argument or trying to show off to Suwako or Kanako about how much "better" she is than you.

>Sounds like someone who needs regular doses of mollusks in her bed~
>"You're so mean..."
> You've done it before in middle school: Sanae's retribution was so horrific that you can't remember anything from that specific week. That, and for some reason you keep associating mint gum with jellyfish.
> Suwako giggles. "I gotta keep you in check, Sango-chan: who knows what kind of a heart breaker you'll be for the girls if I don't!" Beside you, Harami's brows are furrowed, and she seems to be mumbling to herself in befuddlement.

> The three of you soon arrive at the top of the hill, where the trail connects to the stone path that leads from the town to the steps of the shrine. You can see the torii from here, freshly painted and standing tall.
> "Well, I'd invite Harami-chan to the shrine for a snack, but I don't think Kanako'd be very happy to know that you're playing hooky right now. So, how 'bout you two stop by for dinner, at least, maybe even stay until Harami-chan can go back home?" Suwako sounds pretty hopeful.

>Glance to Harami. "Think they'd be interested in dinner?"
> Harami glances back at you. "Ah... I don't know, they're your friends..." she replies distractedly.
> Suwako looks disappointed at the rejection, but brightens up when you say that you'll consider dinner. "I don't think we'll mind. Rin-chan and Utsuho-chan, right? They haven't been around in a long time either. I'm sure Kanako and Sanae won't mind eating with you four, either. Heh... what should we make... ah, I just remembered that I got some mahi-mahi from the harbor the other day; that should do nicely!"
> Harami's attention is immediately grabbed. "Eh? Mahi-mahi?!" You swear that her mouth is watering...

> Swim practice usually runs about two hours, two and a half if people are motivated, so you usually get out at around five-thirty to six in the afternoon. It shouldn't be a problem, really.
>"Yeah, that'll be fine! I'll be sure to drag them up there. And since I have Harami, I'll only have to put one of them in a headlock!"

> "A sister..." Harami has a far away expression for a little bit, before shaking it off. "Are you certain that your sister will want to fight against you? The Meduso nation likely won't recruit her, but there's a possibility the Anguili or the Lophii might take advantage of that. In fact... the Meduso may try to use your family against you, in other ways... Who exactly is in your family?"
